Hollywood Historical Society Pop-Up Museum Installation Set for Jan. 19

Hollywood Swears in Three Commissioners

BY ROBIN DRULARD “I don’t think any other South Florida city has as much old advertising material as Hollywood,” said Clive Taylor, self-styled Hollywood historian, collector of Hollywood memorabilia and frequent contributor to the Hollywood Gazette’s Hollywood History feature. “Joseph Young was a big believer in advertising, and he did a lot to promote the city in such high-end publications as the Literary Digest, the Wall Street Journal and the Saturday Evening Post.” Some of these ads will be displayed at the first-ever Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) PopUp Museum installation, Hollywood Then and Now, Shown In Ads and Postcards, set to debut at the ArtsPark on January 19, as part of the January Art Walk. Also included in the first exhibition will be ads from Young’s local magazine, the Hollywood Reporter, later-era ads from the now-defunct SunTattler, and a series of postcards and photos showing various Hollywood locations “then and now.” Most of the featured items come from Taylor’s personal collection and from the archives of the Historical Society. The team putting together the exhibition, spearheaded by Taylor and HHS president Karen Albertson, includes several members of the HHS and local artist/curator Alissa Alfonso, an expert in pop-ups, who will design the space.

Callari Children are encouraged to visit and learn more about the history of their city. Kids will also have the opportunity to create and mail their own Hollywood postcards! The exhibit will be set up in the center of the ArtsPark building lobby on moveable boards and will include a sitting/viewing area. It will be featured on the electronic marquee in Young Circle and on the city website and will run for approximately two months. After that time, it may be moved to another location or may be changed to another theme, depending on the public’s response. “Young was a big salesman,” noted Taylor. “He was really trying to develop the idea of Hollywood as a dream city, and he did a lot of advertising in only a short window of time.” For more information on the exhibit or the Hollywood Historical Society, contact http://www. hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org, 954 923 5590, hollywoodflhistory@att.net

The power of teamwork really showed up for me when I joined our amazing cover girls, the Broward Fierce Fighters, for their weekly Dragon Boating practice. Being part of a paddling team means keeping pace and paddling in unison with the other people in the boat -- lag behind and the others have to pick up your slack. And these gals could paddle! But not only are they a powerful team in the water, but they’re also a warm, supportive, inclusive group of breast cancer survivors which helps women build strength and confidence post-surgery. But more importantly, they exist to support other women who are going through what they went through. Now that’s teamwork. In this holiday issue, as always, we aim to bring you lots of good cheer. Meet the Hollywood Entrepreneurs Disrupting the South Florida Art Scene BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD

ways looking for people in sales, graphic design, and specialized data. We set up a showroom here also to meet big clients when they’re in town, but most of the business is done online or at trade shows.

COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com

With the number of women entrepreneurs on the rise, we wanted to highlight the founders of globally recognized contemporary art brand, Oliver Gal. You’ve likely seen their pieces hanging in celebrity homes or all over your Instagram feed, but not many people realize these two inspirational sisters are the mastermind behind this décor hub growing right here in Hollywood.

Last summer, a sign went up in the modern loft-like glass building right across from Hollywood City Hall, adding yet another new name to Hollywood’s burgeoning art scene — welcome to Hollywood, Oliver Gal Artist Co. But Oliver Gal is actually not a new company at all, in Hollywood or the art world. It’s a 14-year-old family business. Inspired by the South Florida art scene as well as their own personal travels, Oliver Gal is the brainchild of sisters artists Lola Sánchez-Maehle and Ana Sanchez Gal, who were both recognized recently in HFN’s Inspiring Women in Home list, along with Ana’s husband Assi Glikshtein Gal. Together they seized an opportunity to bring a small art house over to the U.S. from their native Spain and with a recommendation from Oprah Winfrey in 2004, they’ve enjoyed soaring sales and well-deserved success ever since. “We’ve actually been in Hollywood for close to 11 years,” explained Israeli-born Assi, showing a picture of the familiar AllPopArt.com store that used to sit on the corner of Dixie and Washington. “Yeah, that was us,” he affirmed. But the company was growing and in 2017, they moved all the different departments to the new, modern location. We sat down for a quick Q&A with Mr. Gal and his gals. Hollywood Gazette: This is a pretty unique company. Who are you and how did you get started? 10

December 2018

Oliver Gal founders, Ana Gal and Lola Sanchez

Ana: Oliver Gal is a company created with leading-edge spirit and an ambitious objective: to offer museum-quality original art for all, at a revolutionary price. We have an ever-changing collection that caters to all tastes and allows everyone to dress their walls and homes in images that they love and obsess about. Lola: It’s a real American Dream story. I answered the first call and told the caller that they were still sleeping! I was about 12. You might want to let Assi tell it. Assi: Friends of ours in Spain had just started a website for a personalized pop art business, and Ana had just graduated with a degree in web design, so she went to work for them. We had moved to the U.S. and we saw the opportunity so we decided to partner with them and bring the business to the U.S. too. We put in the time to translate the website and adjust the business more to the U.S. way of doing business and AllPopArt. com was born. We had been in business for about four months and had gotten about $400 in sales when that first phone call came in and Lola answered it. We had just gotten married, and Ana said, “After the honeymoon, it’s going to be time to find a job.” Then, in 2004, we were featured with our first brand, allPopart.com, as one of Oprah’s favorite ideas for Christmas! We went from $400 to $80,000 in sales, really really fast. This what gave us the push to create the company we have now. It gave us the spirit and the funding we needed, and we took off. HG: When was that? And have you always been here in Hollywood? Assi: We’ve actually had the business in Hollywood since about 14 years ago, just after we started the company, and we moved into our beautiful new space here just a little over a year ago, in June 2017. The new space holds our art department, graphic design, data entry, sales, billing and more. We also have a production facility in Pembroke Park. We employ almost 70 people altogether, split about evenly between the two offices, and we’re al-

HG: Talk to me a little about the growth of the firm. Assi: Well, after the Oprah thing one thing led to another; there were more magazines and TV shows and we were becoming really good at online marketing, and we were building our relationships with the websites and the companies we were working with, and they started saying, hey, you need to create something we can sell more of. Most of our work was one of a kind, and difficult to scale. Lola had started doing some personalized art for customers, and we had been thinking about what to do next, and now here was this opportunity to make our own art line. So we worked really, really hard on it, and we created our first collection, and it was a huge success. That was about six years ago. Lola: I was coming here every summer and they mentored me since I was a kid. I did just about every job there was to be done, except answer the phone — I would be on with the customers for too long! I studied graphic design. I learned it all. I’m now the Chief Creative Officer. HG: One of the most impressive things about your company is the wide range of products that you have — your retail customers range from Walmart to Nordstroms. How do you do it? Assi: The challenge has always been, and it continues to be, how to expand into the different price points, products and brands to service all our customers in this huge market and industry. How to expand and please everyone, and target all the different customers. I think the “secret sauce” contains a combination of creative and unique art, strong branding, high quality and value. Then the art sells itself. We continue to create different brands and private labels, lines and products for the different customers and markets to keep the designs new and unique for each. We’re always learning and growing. Lola: All of our designs are original, inhouse art. We create it and then we produce it on a large scale. We like to think of ourselves as the trend-setters in modern and pop art, curated collections.

Assi Glikshtein Gal and Ana Sanchez Gal, Co-Founders Lola SanchezMaehle, Chief Creative Officer

HG: Is there really an Oliver Gal or is he a conglomeration of all of you? Lola: You got us on that one. There is no real Oliver. Oliver is a conglomeration of us, a collective of our ideas. Assi: Oliver Gal is the umbrella collection, our main brand. We now have more than 10 brands. Plus we have expanded into not only wall art, but we have pillows, bedding and bath items, pins and purses, even neon home designs. And there will be more to come. HG: What are you most proud of? Assi: Our team. Lola: We would say our team. We have a great team in place. Ana: For me, Oliver Gal is our opportunity to make a difference in our community by providing leadership in a workplace-based in growth, creativity, and diversity. We love what we do and we foster a happy environment as much or even more than a lucrative one. I also could not be happier than to work with my husband and my sister, as well as the rest of our talented team. HG: That’s what I read about you. Even former employees have only great things to say about you. Anything else you have to say to the people of Hollywood? Assi: Thank you. We love it here. We live here and work here and we’re happy to be a part of this great city. Also, we have jobs available and we read all resumes. Renovated Terminal 25 Opens, Celebrity Edge Arrives at Port Everglades Port Everglades REPORTER celebrated the dtv@gate.net completion of the renovation of Terminal 25 and the arrival of the new cruise ship the Celebrity Edge. The Renovation of Terminal 25 cost about $120 million. It is the largest financial investment that Port Everglades has ever made in a cruise terminal. In the past, Port Everglades welcomed on average about 335,000 Celebrity guests each year. This represented about nine percent of overall passenger traffic. Now it is expected that Celebrity will bring about 500,000 travelers to Port Everglades, about 14 percent of the port’s projected passenger traffic. The original Terminal 25 was built in 1992 at a cost of about $3.2 million. The recent renovation involved replac-

Free Circulator Service to Replace Hollywood Trolley BY DAVID VOLZ REPORTER dtv@gate.net

Hollywood residents will soon be able to get around the downtown area in a golf cart-like vehicle or get to the beach from the downtown area in a hybrid van. The Hollywood Commission agreed to a contract with Free Ride for circulator services in the estimated amount of $885,360. Depending on the season, it will operate ten to twelve hours a day in the downtown and beach area. The new Hollywood Circulator service which is set to begin in January will offer 13 electric powered vehicles during the season when more people are in the downtown and beach areas. During the season from October to April there will be 13 electric vehicles, seven operating in the downtown area and six on Hollywood beach. During the offseason, from May through September, there will four electronic vehicles in the downtown and four on the beach. These vehicles will run about ten to twelve hours a day and seat up to five passengers. Vans will carry passengers from the downtown area to the beach and commut12

The renovated Terminal 25 will mean an estimated 280 direct local jobs. It will generate $7.4 million in state and local taxes. Electronic media-mesh for innovative messaging will wrap the terminal’s exterior juxtaposing the more than 18,000 square foot of outward facing glass. This media mesh signage is also inside the terminal. The new expedited arrival technology will make the check-in process seamless at Terminal 25. The terminal was designed to be adaptive and features modern pod-style mobile check-in desks. The Visual Voyage interactive artwork is a unique feature of Terminal 25. The light on this artwork travels along each of the 24 time zones of the global map. Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, president and CEO of Celebrity Cruises is pleased with the new ship and Terminal 25. “The

completion of her first-ever transatlantic crossing and arrival at T25 marks such a historic moment for Celebrity Cruises. This has been more than four years in the making. The collaboration and effort between teams across the world all come together in this incredible moment. I can think of no better place to be than with Captain Costas and the crew of Celebrity Edge knowing that we are sailing into the future, literally and figuratively with this beautiful ship.” Terminal 25 includes 157,800 total square feet with a passenger waiting area of 12,653 square feet. The berth length is 1,369 feet. There are six elevators and four escalators, 48 check-in stations, free Wi-Fi and public art. And there is secure, covered parking at the 1,732 space Midport Garage.

ers will hail the vehicles by using an app or simply flagging them down. There will also be areas where the vehicles will stop and pick up passengers. Once the program is launched it will be determined where the strongest demand is and what time of the day the demand is the highest. Adjustments will be made to meet the demand. The free service will begin in January and will replace the Hollywood Trolley. “This will be a quicker, more useful and modern service,” said Mayor Josh Levy. “It will help residents get around town.” Vice Mayor Debra Case said she believes the circulator service will be good for Hollywood but she is concerned that people who don’t use apps will be unable to benefit from it. She is looking forward to seeing if it will be successful.

Hollywood Beach Candy Cane Parade Set for Dec. 8

The 63rd Annual Candy Cane Parade is set to roll down the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk on Saturday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m. For more than six decades, the parade has served as the official kickoff to the holiday season in Hollywood. This year’s theme for the parade is "Celebrating Our Seas," which is certain to inspire many creative and colorful floats, marching bands and the other entries. In keeping with the “Celebrating Our Seas” theme, parade participants are being asked to hand out candy to parade goers, rather than throwing it from floats. This will help reduce waste on the Broadwalk and sandy beach. Parade attendees can look forward to candy canes and peppermint flavored salt water taffy. The parade begins at Missouri Street and will head south along the Broadwalk to Harrison Street. Parade emcees and compli-

mentary bleacher seating will be stationed at Charnow Park at Garfield Street and at the Hollywood Beach Theater at Johnson Street. Due to limited parking options on the barrier island, beginning at 5:00 p.m., parade goers are encouraged to park in one of the downtown parking garages and take the free patron shuttle to the beach. The downtown parking garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Shuttles will circulate non-stop throughout the evening with the last shuttle leaving the beach at 10:00 p.m. Downtown parking rates apply. The Candy Cane Parade is a signature Hollywood event that is great fun family all are sure to enjoy! For more information, please call 954.921.3404.

Broward Fierce Fighters: Bitten By The Dragon and Thriving! BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com

“Draw!” “Pull!” “Let it run!” Coach Andres Ibon barks commands like a drill sergeant. And the fifteen women holding the paddles, like any good team, follow his orders as they glide their dragon boat through the waters of the Intracoastal. “When we’re out on the water, they’re just athletes to me,” he says. But they’re not just athletes, and this isn’t just any team. These are the Broward Fierce Fighters, and they’re part of an international league of Dragon-Boating Breast Cancer Survivors who practice twice a week, all year round. These women, and occasionally men, undeterred by the diagnoses, choose to build strength and friendships while celebrating life. “It’s our mission, and it’s an important one,” said Mary Carrillo, captain and founder of the team. “When you go through cancer it takes a toll, emotionally and physically. We’ve been there and we’ve been through it. But we’re survivors and we have a lot of positive energy. A lot of positive vibes. And that’s what you need when we’re going through chemo and reconstruction.” “I was an athlete before, then I went through the whole song and dance, I was like, OK, now what?" continued Carrillo. "Because of dragon boating, it was like ‘yes, I’ve still got it!’” Dragon boat racing has ancient Chinese origins and its history has been traced back more than 2000 years. Deeply rooted in rich Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes strength, prosperity, and blessings. Dragon boating became associated with breast cancer survivors in 1996 when Dr. Don McKenzie, a sports medicine physician at the University of British Columbia, recruited 24 breast cancer patients to participate in research to prove that this sport could be beneficial to survivors, contrary to popular belief. From this experiment came the International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission (IBCPC), an organization which encourages and supports the development of recreational dragon boat paddling as a contribution to a healthy lifestyle for people diagnosed with breast cancer. 18

December 2018

Broward Fierce Fighters (BFF) Inc., founded in October 2016, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on breast health awareness and well-being of breast cancer survivors. It is a spinoff of the SOS (Save Our Sisters) team in Miami, now in its 12th year. Both teams are affiliated with the IBCPC which runs an international Dragon Boating competition for Breast Cancer Survivor (BCS) teams every four years. In July of this year, several BFF and SOS team members traveled to Florence, Italy, to compete. Aniela McGuinness and Veronica Stanfield were two of BFF’s earliest “recruits.” “There’s a term we use,” said McGuinness. “When you try dragon boating once and are totally smitten from the get-go, we call it ‘Bitten by the Dragon.’ Mary invited me to try it, and I was immediately bitten. “Yup,” Stanfield agreed. “Aniela and I were the first on the team, and we were bitten badly!” “Our main mission,” said McGuinness, “is to show people that, yeah, breast cancer sucks and it’s sad but it’s not the end. In this boat, we’re strong and we’re powerful. We don’t complain, we don’t feel bad for ourselves. We don’t wallow.” “It’s really great for the women physically, emotionally and mentally,” continued Stanfield. “The team aspect is so rewarding, but also being on the water– it’s so beautiful, but it’s not only that. It helps women. When I went through [cancer], I had wonderful support. And I want to be that for other women.” McGuinness recalled her first Dragon

Boating experience. “The first time I went on that boat, I looked at all the other women– they were all about 20 years older than me, so I’m thinking, ‘Hey, I’m in my thirties, I’m gonna kick some butt. And these women beat me down! They just knocked the crap out of me! They never quit paddling, and they’ve had all kinds of illnesses and treatments,” shared McGuinness. “I couldn’t use any of my excuses anymore: ‘I had cancer… I had surgery…’ And I normally would have! And that’s the great thing about that boat — once you’re in it you know you have no excuses, so you go: ‘I guess I better just shut up and paddle.’ All your excuses go out the window.” “And for me, well, I’m lazy. You’re stuck in that darn boat, and you can’t get back. You’ve got to finish. And you paddle in unison, so you can’t even paddle halfassed. ‘Cause if you slack off, the rest of the team has to carry you. So it’s amazing exercise, and I felt so strong, and it’s a great group of women. It’s a great feeling, it’s incredible. With them, I’m learning to love myself so much more.” “I’m very anti-team,” said team member Sharon Hatch. “A new group of besties was NOT what I was looking for. Aniela drafted me, and I joined this group to feel good and stay healthy. I was afraid that the people would be whiney — but that is NOT this group! This is a group of crazy, awesome women. The initials of the name of the group — BFF — are indicative of what I found here. This is the best group of women I know, and it’s amazing to be on the water, and when we’re out there,

everything else seems to fall away.” The Broward Fierce Fighters rent their boat from Synergy Outdoor Adventure Resources (SOAR), a 501c3 that supports US amateur athletes, especially in paddlesports. “We would love to own a boat one day,” said McGuinness, who admitted that the organization is still learning the ins and outs of fundraising. “We’re not the greatest at it, but we accept everyone who want to go in the boats and figure it out as we go along,” she said. “We get sponsors — including the Memorial Breast Cancer Center — plus we raise funds from random donations and membership fees, and we guilt our doctors, friends and families into supporting us. We never turn anyone away who wants to join the team.” Membership in BFF is open to breast cancer survivors, their families, friends, and supporters. Although family, friends and supporters cannot race with the team. Paddlers report increased fitness levels by being physically active and a sense of well being and empowerment, which are important elements to minimize recurrence. “And these people are honestly athletes. Strong, focused, kicking-butt athletes,” said McGuinness. “To be with these women, you see that, again, there are no excuses. Breast cancer runs the gamut, all ages, races, ethnicities, careers — one women in Miami is in her 80s! — so no matter what you have to say, the woman next to you says: Hey, shut up and paddle.” “The really nice thing,” she concluded, “is that when you’re out on the water, yes, you’re building strength, but it’s rhythmic paddling so you’re also able to zone out and let your problems disappear. It really helps women live again.” When she was first diagnosed, said Donna Vazquez, who joined the BFF in April, she went to a support group, and found it full of complaining, self-pitying, depressing people. Then she found BFF. “And after a day here with these people,” she said, “I feel great. The sky is a little bluer, and the sun shines a little brighter.” For more information on the Broward Fierce Fighters and the Dragon Boating program, or to make a donation or sponsor an athlete, visit www.browardfiercefighters. org or contact Aniela McGuinness at 954-643-9548.

All Together Now

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF COLLABORATION

United All Boats Rise BY JEFF JACOB

S

o, I’m sitting on a colorful blanket under a palm tree on Hollywood Beach. Having found a little shade in the heat of the day, I am content. Toes in the sand, I have a notebook and pencil with me. There is sand, breeze, and salt in the air. Heavenly. About an hour into my “allotted” two-hour window, (how much money I’d put in the meter), I noticed the sand around my blanket was moving. Little red ants were going about their business. At first, I was startled. I love all things outdoors, but some of the DNA in my family tree does not. However, I’m not them, and they’re not me, right? Trying to be calm about it, I use hands and feet to push piles of sand around me and move the ants (without harming them..mostly) away from the blanket. Surely, they would get the point if I kept digging these moats and building these…well, ant “defense” hills? Nope. These industrious critters kept on their merry mission. United and focused on the task at hand. They seemed to be working together towards a purpose of higher calling. One that largely involved moving around my blanket, though not on it. Mostly. Some

of them did make it onto the blanket as I held still and tried to focus on my book, the ocean, the breeze… is something crawling on my leg? Nope, nothing there, wait….nope nothing. Oh, there’s one. Crap. I was fascinated by their determination, their collaborative instincts. The way they worked together reminded me of an article I once read about a forest of trees all of whose roots were connected. They communicated with one another in an organic, almost mystical way. This red army was on their own little scavenger hunt for who knows what... food? Building materials? A Ms. Pac Man machine with a joystick that works well? Not sure what, but they had a mission, and somehow they were energetically connected. Did they ever quarrel? They must sometimes. Speaking of... I recently saw “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Queen, like all bands, had their fights. But they also did some amazing work through collaboration. Did you know that famous foot stomping, drum-banging part at the start of “We Will Rock You” was not Freddie’s invention? Rather, it stemmed from the genius of guitarist Brian May. At the start of a rehearsal that Freddie hadn’t

yet arrived at, May got tired of waiting and pitched his idea to the band of somehow involving the audience in part of this new song. Giving them their “own part.” Can you hear it? Stomp, stomp, clap…stomp, stomp, clap! If you’re reading this before Dec. 6, and are inspired to do something collaborative with the entire community, join us in our annual city-wide scavenger hunt. We’ll challenge you, have fun, get to know each other, shine a light on some local non-profits, and celebrate all the good that Hollywood has to offer! Here and everywhere, we are intrinsically interconnected. Amidst the daily grind, it’s easy to forget how nearly every action we take, or decision we make, has a domino effect on the ones around us. A butterfly effect if you will. Keep that in mind every day, every moment. At work and at home. Think about it. Stay present. Give, collaborate, lift up your neighbor, breathe, rinse, repeat and do it again. Dare to see through the eyes of the other, dare to truly listen, be a great friend, an inspirational teammate, a leader who makes a difference. United all boats rise. All together now, get to it.

Hollywood History

Private Property, Keep Out: The Phantom Property Owners of Hollywood's West Lake Park

H

by Clive Taylor

ollywood is fortunate to be the home of West Lake Park, which occupies a three-mile strip immediately west of the Intracoastal Waterway, and is home to the largest remaining mangrove ecosystem from Miami to West Palm Beach. This splendid park provides valuable natural resources and significant recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike. But few people know that within this county treasure there still exists a smattering of privately-owned residential lots, left over from the boom-time development era of the ‘20s when the entire area was platted all the way to the Dania cut-off canal. According to the Broward County Parks and Recreation website, evidence suggests that this land was used by Seminoles in the early 19th century. During the Prohibition era, the waterway to the east of the site was known as Whiskey Creek because it was used by bootleggers from the Bahamas and elsewhere as a route for smuggling liquor. In the '20s, during the city's development, many -- some say hundreds -- bought lots in the future Park, intending to build homes on the new land being created out of the swampland. The Lakes area of Hollywood at that time was also mostly swamp, just like West Lake Park. Both were under water at high tide east of 14th Avenue. As he built his planned city, Joseph Young had massive dredgers digging North and South Lakes, simultaneously filling the swamps to create buildable land. The party ended when the 1926 hurricane struck, followed by the Great Depression. Although some lots in the West Lake Park area were sold, most still belonged to Joseph Young. Young's subsequent bankruptcy transferred ownership of these lots to the Ohio Highway Construction Company, which formed Hollywood Inc. to continue development of the land they acquired from Young. Flash-forward to 1974, when a new round of development was initiated by Hollywood, Inc. That year, an award-winning journalist named Anne

Kolb became the first woman elected to the Broward County Commission. Kolb and the Commission, working alongside local chapters of such organizations as the Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, Anne Kolb and other groups such as the Friends of West Lake and the Environmental Coalition, worked hard to preserve the area and save the coastal mangrove wetland from development. Four years later, Broward County voters overwhelmingly approved by referendum the expenditure of $7.5 million to help acquire the tract. Commissioner Kolb and other public officials continued lobbying efforts for state money to assist in the purchase, and in 1980 the Florida State Cabinet agreed to appropriate funds. Kolb died in 1981, but the development of the proposed park continued, and in June 1982 West Lake Park opened. The West Lake story continued with the development of the park's Anne Kolb Nature Center, which opened in February 1996. But what of those individual lots that were purchased so long ago? Broward County had bought the most of the land from Hollywood Inc., but several of the lots continue to be held by the original owners or their heirs, and the park was built around them! Some of these lots have been handed down from generation to generation, with the owners continuing to pay property taxes to Broward County every year.

I tracked down one of these third-generation owners and asked why he doesn’t sell his lot to the county. He told me that his belief is that one day the pressure to develop this land will be too great, maybe not in his lifetime, he admitted, but he still believes that his descendants may profit. This owner told me that every year, he receives an offer from Broward County to buy his land -for below the appraised value -- and every year, he refuses. Park officials told me that they receive requests two or three times every year from lot owners wanting to access their properties. Once they establish legitimate ownership, they are granted access to areas not open to the public, so that they can visit their lots. Park manager Laurel Person told me that just recently, a lot owner showed up with GPS equipment to document exactly where his land is located. Another lot owner from up north comes every year and brings his kids to show them their place in Florida. I contacted the Land Acquisition Department of Broward County and was told that when the county purchased the land for the park, there were many unwilling sellers, holdouts from the boom-time dream sold to their relatives years ago. Some lots are still stuck in legal limbo, where deceased relatives and estates haven’t been transferred. Many descendants had no idea that Grandma and Grandpa even owned these lots, and clearing these titles cost more than the county is willing to pay for the lots. The county is now slowly accumulating lots from willing sellers and from tax

lien sales, when people get tired of paying for a dream that will probably never come true. Today, West Lake Park is a 1,500-acre park full of natural wonders and opportunities for locals and visitors alike to experience Florida's raw beauty. For Hollywood residents, it's a dream come true to have this stunning nature preserve in their own backyards. But only a few realize that, but for the grace of God, a hurricane and a stock market crash, this magnificent local treasure would probably not exist. The entrance to West Lake Park is at 1200 Sheridan St. For information, call 954-357-5161 or email WestLakePark@ Broward.org Clive Taylor is a self-styled historian, a board member at the HHS, a docent at the Ft. Beachside Montessori Art Club Teams Up with Humane Society to Encourage Adult Cat Adoptions Each week the art club at Beachside Montessori Village School in Hollywood, meets to create unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. The projects have an educational message and past projects have included: ceramics, bicycle wheel frames woven with marine debris, sculptures from materials such as Styrofoam and cardboard that would have been discarded at school, and currently they are working on creating peace signs that will include messages about why they are grateful for the environment and ocean. In November the kids, who range in age from third to eighth grade, learned how adult cats are often overlooked at animal shelters and have a harder time finding permanent loving homes. Photos of felines who have been at the Humane Society of Broward County for more than 30 days were printed out and given to each student. The students then painted miniature portraits (3x3) of the feline in need. The masterpieces are on display at the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road in the lobby. According to Cherie Wachter, VP of Marketing at the HSBC – “this is a very creative way to help bring awareness to the many cats that are waiting for forever homes. Hopefully the art club students are more aware of the need for cat adopters and if their family is looking to add a feline friend, they will consider adopting.” “Whether it be about the environment, helping others in need in our community or bringing awareness, the 52 students let their creativity shine each month” said Manon Boulanger Wiese, art club volunteer. The HSBC is conveniently located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95. Adoption hours are Monday – Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. For more information 954-989-3977.
