Quality water is ‘on tap’ in Hollywood
by BRETT DALY | Editor brett@hollywoodgazette.com
If you’re a Hollywood resident who is still purchasing bottled water, you may be pleased to know that Hollywood water is the same, if not better quality - straight from the tap. The City of Hollywood has received a lot of recognition for the quality of its water and it has even garnered the attention of Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola Bottling Co., which has a processing plant located on Pembroke Road, uses Hollywood’s water for its Dasani label. Water Treatment Plant Manager Taylor Calhoun said it’s proof of the high quality of Hollywood’s water. “We feel that we are a leader in our industry by providing abundant, highquality, safe water to all our customers through the application of emerging technologies and efficient use of all resources,” he said. “Our surrounding communities are using or changing to a similar process that we have been the leader in for the last 15 years.” The Hollywood Water Treatment Plant has a staff of 29 employees and is supported by other divisions such as Regulatory Compliance, Engineering, Electrical/Instrumentation, Distribution, Finance and the Waste Water Plant. It is a ground water treatment plant that uses two separate aquifers: the Biscayne (fresh water) and the Floridan (brackish water). In addition, the plant uses three treatment methods to soften the water: reverse osmosis (brackish), nanofiltration and conventional lime softening (fresh). All three processes are blended at the plant before distribution. “[Residents] are being provided with the highest level of water quality by utilizing the most efficient processes,” Calhoun said. Hollywood treats more than 6 billion gallons of drinking water each year, on average, according to the City’s website. To ensure its quality, the City monitors its water according to federal and state regulations, but Calhoun said they strive to surpass those regulations. Each day, the City performs more than 70 tests to check water quality and performs an additional 160 tests each month on drinking water samples taken throughout the City, according to Hollywood’s annual Water Quality Report. It tests the levels of inorganic contaminants like fluoride, nitrate and sodium – which can be naturally occurring or result from storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, or oil and gas production – and for lead and copper. According to the Water Quality Report for 2010, the City has not surpassed the Maximum
“More than 25% of bottled water comes from a municipal water supply, the same place that tap water comes from.” - United States Enviromental Protection Agency Contaminant Level or MCL allowed for drinking water in any of the tests recorded. For its efforts, Hollywood has won the United States Environmental Protection Agency 2006 Consumer Confidence Report Excellence Award, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection 2007 Plant Operation of Excellence Award, the Region 6 of the Florida Section American Water Works Association 2008 Best Tasting Drinking Water Contest, and the Florida Water and Pollution Control Operators Association 2010 Utility of the Year. In addition to providing consumers with high-quality water, the City makes a concerted effort to promote water conservation. It also promotes opting for tap water rather than bottled water. “We are providing our product 24/7 delivered to your tap at a fraction of the cost,” Calhoun said, pointing out the conservation of energy associated with tap water in comparison to the bottled water. Unlike tap water, bottled water requires additional treatment process energy, bottle manufacturing, transportation energy and disposal. “We feel our product is more energy and environmentally conservative.” In the future, the Water Treatment Plant will continue with its comprehensive water and wastewater master plans and focus on improvements and replacement of aging infrastructure.

Dear Hollywood Gazette: After reading your article “Free Parking Downtown,” I felt the need to reply. I wish I knew all the appropriate people to reply to, but I’m hoping you can let them know how I, and others I’ve chatted with, feel. I agree that it is annoying to pay to park downtown. Parking downtown is difficult and having to pay for it adds to the frustration. I visit several of the downtown restaurants as well as the park and often over pay to park to be sure that I am not ticketed. However, adding to the cost to park at the beach to recoup the revenue is NOT the answer. I spent $14 to take my kids to the beach over the holiday break. I found that a lot more invasive than the paying to park downtown. We live in Florida and the beach should be a cost affordable way to spend the day with
your friends and family. The parking money comes out of bike rentals, pizza, ice cream, etc. So what about those business owners? I do not own a business in either area, but I am a consumer. The prices at the beach just went up and we are pricing ourselves right out of the ability to enjoy our own resources! Soon, the beaches that we live near and pay taxes to enjoy will only be for those who are staying in a hotel or can afford to live there. - Heather Sabie Hollywood resident, district three Dear Hollywood Gazette: I used to go to Hollywood beach once or twice a week; now I hardly go since they removed a lot of the parking spaces and doubled the parking rate in addition to making you walk to a master meter instead of having a regular coin meter by your parking space. This really hurts the business on the beach. - Jeff Gillespie Dear Readers, I can relate to your frustration regarding beach rules and regulations. A new resident to the area, I was surprised to find out that dogs are
pretty much banned from the beach, with the exception of the restricted hours on the weekend at the small stretch of dog beach. I avoid parking on the beach whenever I can, opting instead to ride my electric bike. A family day at the beach can certainly become costly. However, according to Lorie Mertens-Black, director of Parking and Intergovernmental Affairs for the City of Hollywood, there has not been any recent rate increases to beach parking. Although a rate increase of 50 cents was proposed, perhaps to offset the recent decision to offer free downtown parking, no decision has been made. The commission may meet in a few months, said Mertens-Black, but nothing has been decided regarding the proposed rate increase. Perhaps now is the time to voice one’s opinion about the proposed increased rate to beach parking before it has been implemented. - Miriam Cronkhite Dear Hollywood Gazette: Having been involved in every casino campaign since 1978, plus being a political activist for casinos in between campaigns, I believe the new
casino bill that adds the last two games remaining (dice and roulette) to give us “full” casinos, will happen in two to three years as the bill is modified and remolded. At least the debate has begun via Senator Bogdanoff and Representative Fresen’s bill. The parimutuels and the Seminole Tribe must be included. We cannot break another Native American treaty (i.e. Compact). “Full” casinos will have us ready to compete against the new casinos of a free Cuba. Casinos are coming. It’s not a matter of “if.” It’s merely a matter of “when.” Thank You. - Stan Wertheimer Dear Hollywood Gazette: What happened to our code enforcement? Hollywood now is beginning to look like an inner city slum; everywhere you look there are violations galore. It would take a force of 20 people to clean up our city so it resembles the beautiful area I moved to in 1954. Vehicles park wherever they want, grass grows as tall as it can, trash is placed everywhere or dumped in vacant lots, the list goes on and on. Cont. on page 9

code enforcement efforts and raise the bar on property standards. The City of Hollywood has implemented programs, such as the “Great Neighborhoods Challenge,” to encourage neighborhood beautification and to reward communities for taking pride in their home and land. County and state assistance is also available. According to Broward County’s website, the “Single Family Housing Rehabilitation” program provides assistance to eligible homeowners for rehabilitation of substandard dwellings. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (hud.gov) offers advice on home improvement financing and repair. Citizens of Hollywood can easily report code violations at www. hollywoodgazette.com/2009/see-clickfix; notifications are sent to the proper individuals. Others can join the efforts by voting to get the problem fixed, as well as enforce change by sharing it on places like Facebook and Twitter. Videos and images can be included in the report and users can opt to be kept informed of the progress via e-mail. I assure you that you are not alone in your frustration. Dori Lynn Neuwirth, board member of the Superior Small Lodging State Association, refers to “the liberty grand site.” “The site remains
For fifty years the city maintained its lakes area so it was a pride in the community, now it is being abandoned by citizens that have lived here for decades, it just looks terrible. - Gary Kramer
Mr. Kramer, First, let me say that I am a new resident to Hollywood and truly enjoy living in this gorgeous city. Having lived in several metropolitan and beach areas, I am surprised that citizens of Hollywood need to be coerced into maintaining the beauty and value of their own property. I have been frustrated myself by the state of disrepair that I see daily. Some feel city procedures are outdated and in need of an update. Hollywood resident Len Erskine said, “There is no real code enforcement because of an antiquated enforcement procedures.” In this difficult financial time, many Hollywood homeowners are finding that aging homes are now in dire need of repair and maintenance. In Mayor Bober’s recent State of the City address, he noted a need to increase

in deplorable condition. It seems to me that there is a different standard for developers than for residents in this City. I can’t imagine that a private property owner with a single lot would be permitted to leave rusty rebar standing for years on end when there is not even an active construction permit for the property,” said Neuwirth. Residents and business owners need to be accountable for upkeep and appearance. Property owners should inspire renters and neighbors, instead of discouraging improvements by projecting a clear lack of pride in their community. Thanks for taking the time to share your concern about community pride. - Miriam Cronkhite
Dear Hollywood Gazette: I would like to thank the staff at the Hollywood Gazette for assisting with the third annual toy drive for Liberia Economic and Social Development that Anna Sergievskaya, my wife, and I organized. Thanks to the support of the Gazette, your wonderful readers and the staff at both the Hollywood Art and Culture Center (Joy, Charmine, Susan and Jeff to name names) and both offices of Sun Credit Union (Pat Mason, Lori Day, Christina and Fran), we were able
to collect over 900 toys and batteries for needy families. If you could have seen the look of joy and amazement on the parents’ faces when we dropped off the toys for their kids, you would understand why Anna and I take the time to do this. From all of us on the board of directors at LES Inc., I would like to thank you and your readers for making the holidays great for 100 needy families. Have a happy new year. Sincerely, Marty Jacobsen
Mr. Jacobsen, Thank you so much for your kind words. What an amazing cause and such a great reward to see the excitement in the eyes of children who will truly appreciate the gifts. We look forward to another year. - Miriam Cronkhite Managing Editor Hollywood Gazette miriam@hollywoodgazette.com E-mail your letters to the editor to Miriam@hollywoodgazette.com.

Hollywood selects new city manager
By Brett Daly Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark can finally relinquish her interim city manager status now that the Hollywood City Commission has found her replacement. Last month, the commission voted 5-2 to hire Douglas Hewett, the former assistant city manager in Fayetteville, N.C. He accepted the position Jan. 13 and will begin Feb. 27. Hewett will make $172,000 a year in addition to receiving 16.3 percent of his base salary into a retirement plan. The 40-year-old beat out five other applicants for the position, which SwansonRivenbark has temporarily filled since the City pressured Cameron Benson to resign in June. While Hewett has not held a city manager title before, commissioners feel confident he has what it takes to get Hollywood back on track. “I see a rising star in this Douglas Hewett,” said Commissioner Patty Asseff. “I think he’s coming in with fresh, new ideas. But he is also a person who seems to want to learn more. I can see him doing a great job here.” In his presentation before the city commission, Hewett said his 90-day action plan consisted of a four-phased approach: introductions and community orientations; identifying commission expectations; integration and team building; and development of an action agenda and establishment of a reporting process. Hewett proposed implementing “coffee chats” throughout the City to acquaint himself with residents, employees, media and unions. In addition, he would like to learn more about the business groups who have already “invested in the community” and would like to tour each of the commissioner’s districts to learn about their concerns. “I think it’s also important to work very closely with your CRA,” he said. “I think working together, the city manager and the CRA staff, [will be] very important to advance the City in the direction the commission has established.” Hewett also discussed initiating the development of an annual strategic planning process that would be tied to the budget and integrating himself into the City of Hollywood team, while also addressing any lingering issues from the past management transition. “I don’t have preconceived notions about how things should be done,” he said. As the assistant city manager in Fayetteville, Hewett oversaw several
departments including Environmental Services/Sanitation, Human Resources Development, Transit, Human Relations, Management Services, Special Projects, Legislative Affairs, Engineering and Infrastructure and Strategic Planning, according to the City of Hollywood’s website. In 2010, he was named the Assistant City Manager of the Year by the International City/County Management Association. “While Hollywood is a smaller city vis-à-vis population, the development that has occurred and opportunity for further growth is greater than Fayetteville’s,” Doug Hewett Hewett wrote in his application. “The potential for development interests me because those cities who are poised to act quickly and decisively once the recession ends will be the first to recover and rebound. My energy level and dedication will make me an asset in any organization.” Under the City of Hollywood’s Commission-Manager form of government, the city manager handles the day-to-day administration of the City and is one of only two positions the City Commission is responsible for hiring. “I’m also interested in the position because it will be a challenge,” he said. “Hollywood’s budget issues are still pressing, there are unresolved concerns about employee benefits and compensation and there is also a certain amount of healing that has to occur following the departure of the last city manager.” “In all of those areas I believe my open communication style, which engenders trust, will benefit the City greatly. Those issues can’t be fixed with technical expertise, but rather it will require someone adept at understanding adaptive problems.” City spokeswoman Raelin Storey said the City looks forward to his start date. “The City is very much looking forward to the arrival of Mr. Hewett,” she said. “There was a lot of enthusiasm for his presentation and his approach. There is an air of hopefulness.”

Downtown Hollywood Full Moon Drum Circle set for Feb. 7 by CARON CONWAY | Lead Correspondent
Monthly event unites all ages and abilities in a rhythmic celebration Hand drummers and percussionists of all ages and skill levels will gather together in Downtown Hollywood on Feb. 7 for the Full Moon Drum Circle, a monthly community event that has been growing in popularity since it was introduced at the ArtsPark at Young Circle last October. The guided drum circle, which is presented by Resurrection Drums from 7 to 9 p.m., is open to the public at no charge. The last full moon celebration in January attracted more than 150 drummers and spectators, according to Jeffrey Lee, owner of Hollywood-based Resurrection Drums and the event’s emcee. “People absolutely love it,” he said. “It’s a fun thing and the kids have a good time.” The main objective of a drum circle is to share rhythm among a united group of participants who express it in a collective voice. In a guided drum circle, a facilitator leads the group and maintains the focus on the rhythms. Facilitating the Full Moon Drum Circle are Evan Kline, a professional drummer and hand drum instructor, and Adrian Jones, a music teacher at Hollywood Academy of Arts & Science Charter School. Rhythms are a universal language, shared by people of all cultures throughout
history, and drumming has always been at the center of celebrations and rituals that include births, deaths, weddings, war and peace. The drum circle is “really about people getting back to their roots,” Lee said. “Drumming was one of the first actions man took to communicate. It’s the mother of all tongues.” But it wasn’t until about 10 years ago that hand drumming started attaining popularity among modern-day Americans, Lee added. “We realized that drumming is really cool, and it’s a great stress reliever,” he said. “And with the Full Moon Drum Circle, we’ve opened up drumming to anybody who can walk and talk and just show up with their drum.” The next Full Moon Drum Circle will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 7 in the ArtsPark at Young Circle located at Hollywood Boulevard and U.S. 1. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to bring a hand drum or percussion instrument and meet in the Palm Court area on the west side of the park. To learn more about the Full Moon Drum Circle, call Resurrection Drums at 954-926-0204. Other upcoming dates include March 8, April 6 and May 6. Downtown Hollywood’s visual arts appeal expands
Arts and entertainment district generating renewed interest among galleries, artists and art lovers By Caron Conway Downtown Hollywood is for art lovers. The ongoing effort to realize the historic district's full potential as a visual arts hub is gaining momentum with artists, local businesses and visitors alike through new art gallery offerings and weekly outdoor mural painting events designed to beautify and unite the
community through the arts. Two new galleries – D'Art Vine Gallery and Multiversal/smART Studios – now call Downtown Hollywood home, while a third – Comfort Zone Studio & Spa – recently relocated to a larger downtown site. In addition, the smART street art movement, which launched in midDecember, is drawing accomplished artists and art enthusiasts to the Downtown District every Tuesday evening, along with special events like the monthly ArtWalk. When Comfort Zone Studio & Spa co-owner Kevin Stawieray wanted to expand his business, he didn't have to look any further than the downtown neighborhood he first chose in 2004. "Hollywood is in the middle of Fort
Lauderdale and Miami, but it can be more laid back and it doesn't have to try as hard," said Stawieray, a graphic designer and painter who relocated Comfort Zone Studio & Spa from Harrison Street to 2001 Van Buren St. in December. Stawieray said Downtown Hollywood has served his business –which includes a full-service day spa and an art gallery featuring tranquilitytheme paintings and sculptures – very well through the years. "We didn't want to leave Hollywood. We really like the location," said Stawieray, one of the driving forces behind Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk. D'Art Vine Gallery owners Diana and Carlos Rodriguez recognized Downtown Hollywood's appeal as an art district in choosing the 2000 Harrison St. location
for their new business, which opened in mid-September and features the siblings' paintings and photography, as well as onsite custom framing. "We have always liked the downtown area of Hollywood, and it's a very special location for art, too," Carlos Rodriguez said. "We believe in the improvements that have taken place in the past few years and all the efforts of not only the City but the downtown business owners to make it more artistic and lively." Downtown Hollywood's evolution as an arts and entertainment district also is being propelled forward by the new smART street art movement, a nonprofit, volunteer collaboration between local businesspeople and South Florida artists Cont. on page 15

Diane and Irving Panciera Honored for 50 Years in Hollywood
Diane and Irving Panciera received the prestigious Hammerstein Award at Hollywood Historical Society’s Annual Meeting and Luncheon. The Hollywood Historical Society Annual Meeting and Luncheon was held Jan. 15 at Hollywood Beach Golf and Country Club, 1600 Johnson St. The event honored Diane
and Irving Panciera and Jean Disher. It is an annual event of the Hollywood Historical Society and is a fundraiser for historic preservation in the Greater City of Hollywood. Several members of The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, local government and city officials, as well as business owners from
the 1960s to 2012, attended the event. Panciera Properties, home of Landmark Funeral Home, has been serving the South Florida community since they established their location in 1962 in what was then known as Military Academy Circle – known today by residents as Hollywood’s Presidential
Circle. Family owned and operated for four generations, Panciera continues to thrive in its historic location as a premiere hub of community activities and special events in the South Florida area. Panciera Properties, home of Landmark Funeral Home, invites you to celebrate their 50th anniversary with them for an open house. The event is scheduled to take place at Landmark Funeral Home on March 8 at 5 p.m. Landmark Funeral Home is located at 4200 Hollywood Boulevard. For more information, call 954-989-8220.

"Our mission is to redevelop the community through the arts," said Williams, who envisions a downtown "city gallery" filled with wall and window art. LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Organic brewery opens on the Broadwalk by MIRIAM CRONKHITE | Managing Editor miriam@hollywoodgazette.com
With a patio overlooking the ocean and the Broadwalk, the Hollywood Organic Brewery and Restaurant is now serving freshly brewed beer on Hollywood beach. Equipped with a specialized brewing system, the quality is evident in the flavor. The brew masters automate each creation through an advanced computer system, testing the results personally. Co-owner Sergy Novov attributes the clean, smooth, full-bodied flavors to the style of brewing, as well as the organic ingredients. The brewing system allows for temperature control within every pipe, and it is not a filtration process like most U.S. breweries. The bar can serve four styles of tap beer at a time, but they rotate flavors. Jack, our knowledgeable server, described the assortment of tastings. The rice ale tastes clean and crisp. The pilsner is brewed in a “Stella-fashion,” with a clean finish. The wheat beer, a personal favorite, had a smooth finish and a “pineapple color,” Jack said. Hollywood Organic Brewery and Restaurant now has a full liquor license, which means they can serve Novov’s infusions of liquor and spices

in multiple flavors. Novov assures that quality food can be expected. Sausages are homemade and they have a smoker for beef, pork and chicken. They are currently open from noon until midnight daily. For more information visit their website at www. hollywoodorganicbrewery.com.

Last year Caroline Silver, age 64, decided to take control of her life. She decided that she would trade in hours of channel surfing for hours of fitness training to achieve the healthy lifestyle she knew she needed and deserved. Now at 65, Silver has received recognition for her weight-loss accomplishments by becoming the Client of the Year at Synergize, Home of CrossFit 954. Each year, the fitness center holds a Shape Up Hollywood contest that encourages residents to transform their lives by becoming both physically and emotionally healthy. Participants follow exercise regiments, develop healthy eating patterns and track their results throughout the duration of the contest. Ten participants were nominated for the Client of the Year, and after weeks of voting, Silver earned the title. When she enrolled in the Shape Up Hollywood contest in January 2011, Silver weighed 163.8 pounds and had a body fat of 45.8 percent. According to her testimonial for the contest, hearing those numbers gave her the wake-up call she needed to take action. “The part of it that really annoyed me though was the ‘real age’ number because everyone always tells me I don’t look my age,” Silver said, “and here was a machine showing me that I was six years older than my actual age. And then came the fitness assessment test. All I can say is that I could barely hobble around the parking lot to do my one long lap, or do the pushups, or do the burpees, and my performance in all the other assessment exercises was just as dismal.” But after 315 days and 138 workouts, Silver found herself in an entirely different situation. By Nov. 27, she lost 36.2 pounds, dropped down to 24 percent body fat, lowered her “real age” number to 56 and sank three dress sizes. In addition, she can now run six long laps, do burpees and pushups, and deadlift 75 pounds. For someone who said her weight had always fluctuated 30 to 40 pounds despite her best efforts to diet and exercise, she had finally found the key to success. “Synergize, Home of CrossFit 954 is a different kind of gym, where no one is prancing about in fashion workout clothes or flexing muscles to see who they can ‘pick up’ – egos are checked at the door,” she said. “Friendships are formed between

CrossFit members because we all share a common goal: to get fit and healthy through high-intensity exercise and healthy eating.” Silver said she has achieved a complete transformation. “Essentially, my body has changed but what is also important is how I’ve changed mentally, physically, psychologically and physiologically,” she said. “I am no longer depressed. In fact, I am happy and smiling most of the time (a new phenomenon for me) and walk with a spring in my step. I feel excited about life and have boundless energy.” Her results are the ultimate success for any trainer. “I am so thankful and privileged to be able to do what I do for a living,” said Synergize owner and fitness trainer Shondelle Solomon-Miles, who helped Silver achieve her weight-loss goals. “There is no better feeling than watching my clients totally transform their bodies, and often times, their lives, via the vehicle of health and fitness.” In addition to Client of the Year, Synergize also recognized a Coach’s Cont. on page 29
Cont. from page 28
Award, an honor that went to 37-year-old Cindia Diaz, who lost 42 pounds during the Shape Up Hollywood contest. Diaz credits the variety of workouts and the camaraderie at Synergize for her ability to drop two dress sizes. “Every one of us is in it together and we all help pull, push and cheer the other on,” she said. “The coaches are a huge part in making all this happen. We look to them as examples, as our leaders, as the ones to make it happen.” Diaz encourages anyone wanting to take control of their own lives to
participate in the contest. For her, the results speak for themselves. “Sometimes I’ll catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and have to do a double take,” she said. “Was that my arm with all that muscle definition? Or, I’ll grab an old pair of shorts to wear and find they are just too big and fall off without unbuttoning them. Then, I stare in amazement that I used to fit in them, snugly, at best.” For more information about Synergize, Home of CrossFit 954, visit www.hollywoodflpersonaltrainer.com.

Free oral cancer screenings offered in Hollywood from February to April In honor of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry’s Dr.Olga Kharevich will offer free oral cancer screenings on Feb. 16, March 15 and April 19. Approximately 37,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer every year in the U.S. It kills one person every hour of every day, and more than 100 new individuals will be diagnosed with it each day. The good news is that it can often be found early in its development through a simple, painless and quick screening. Who should get screened? Every adult. Oral cancer can often be caught early, even as a pre-cancer. With early detection, survival rates are high and the side effects from treatment are at their lowest. Like other screenings you engage in – such as cervical, skin, prostate, colon and breast examinations – oral cancer screenings are an effective means of finding cancer at its early, highly curable stages. Make them part of your annual health checkups. What are the risk factors? There are two distinct pathways by

which most people come to oral cancer. One is through the use of tobacco and alcohol, a long-term historic problem and cause, and the other is through exposure to the HPV16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16), a newly identified etiology, the same one responsible for the vast majority of cervical cancers in women. The quickest growing segment of the oral cancer population is young, healthy, non-smokers because of the connection to this virus.
