Rob Emerson: Helping People in The Present Look into Past Lives BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com

As a writer and storyteller, there's not a whole lot I haven't heard before. Vietnam veterans, check. Witches in Salem, tragic. Hypnotists and past life regressions, there's nothing new under the sun. We just haven't heard a story where all of these themes all converge. Enter Rob Emerson: Vietnam veteran, and Salem, Massachusetts native who specializes in hypnosis and past-life regressions in Hollywood. It's fair to say that Emerson's story is not so much the telling of a person unknown to us, but how the revealing of experiences in an unknown time and place can facilitate breakthroughs in the present. “I actually had an ancestor that was tried for witchcraft, but I don’t think she was burned at the stake” laughed Emerson, Hollywood hypnotist “My sister found out when she was researching our ancestry.” I wondered if he can use his expertise of hypnosis for past life regression to find out, but according to Emerson, that’s just not how it works. "Using past life regressions allows one to access the deepest levels of their subconscious to help overcome obstacles including severe pain and debilitating fears," explains Emerson. “Most people start in hypnosis with the physical,” said Emerson, “like to stop smoking or overeating. I start from the spiritual side, try to find out what may have happened in a past life that causes them to smoke or eat, and heal that so that they can progress in this life." Like most interesting tales, Rob's started back in the late ‘70s, when he first became interested in, indeed even aware of, hypnosis, past life regressions and how they could be used as tools for present-day life. A Vietnam veteran, wounded in battle and on a government pension, the affable Emerson purchased and refitted a 59-passenger school bus to live out of while touring rock festivals around the country. After a few years, he realized "that the people around me were getting younger and younger, meaning I was getting too old for this!” So he returned to Salem, sold the school bus and started a successful leather splitting and perforating business. One evening, in a local watering hole, Emerson ran into an old friend who had also been traveling the country seeking to find himself. 6

February 2018

In his wanderings, the friend had met a man named Ross Peterson, a disciple of psychic Edgar Cayce. Peterson, like his mentor, was said to have the ability to channel spirits. “Me, being me,” recalled Emerson, “I didn’t believe in any of this past life stuff. But the next day, I thought, I should be fair and at least listen to what he had to say and give him a chance. So I called him up and said, ‘OK, show me.' And he regressed me into a previous life. “Well, it blew my mind,” he continued. “I’m always interested in what’s next. And the mind is a new area to explore. We are never trained to deal with it. We learn math, we learn science, but we are never taught to ‘know thyself.’" In that regression, he recalled very clear and specific things. He saw himself in ancient New Guinea (where he’s never been in this life) heavily armed and in a sailing ship, and then on a dirt road, feeling more powerful than ever before, with a knowledge of complete domination greater than ever, even in his days in the military. He then saw a woman, and he felt pain for her, the pain of loss, which, upon his return to the present, he felt weigh upon himself heavily for a good three days. “That was what convinced me,” he said. “It hit me in the heart. And once you feel that, no one can take it away from you.” So his friend showed him how to regress people -- “it’s easy,” he said -- and he started going out and telling people about his experience and offering to do it for others. “I started to do it for people. It’s really very simple,” he said. “I can do hundreds of people at a time!” Soon, Emerson began expanding his craft, take classes and seminars in hypnosis, regressions and more. “I introduced people to their spiritual guides and showed them how to get there on their own so they wouldn’t need me. I showed them how they could talk to people who had passed away by taking themselves into a deep meditation and going inside their subconscious minds. Because our subconscious knows everything, our conscious minds know nothing. Without the knowledge of our subconscious, we’re riding on flat tires.” In his studies, he also learned how to help people by analyzing their dreams and how to heal by laying hands, and has had amazing successes with that as well. He is quick to explain that he does not want to force his beliefs on anyone. He believes in what he does and he knows he’s

helped many people. “What do I know?” He asked. “ Sometimes it works. I don’t know how. I don’t have the answers. I just know how to ask the questions. The subconscious mind knows what’s going on, and the more in touch you are with that, the better off you will be. It touches their hearts. It’s real.“ The process of hypnosis itself is simple. A recent subject explained, “He had me lie on a couch in a semi-darkened room and counted backward from 50 to zero. He asked me to imagine I was walking down a spiral staircase. Then he asked me to imagine walking even further down on another staircase and guided me as I imagined I was on a boat in a river and then arriving on the other side. This put me in a very relaxed state.” After that, he said, he had visions of a rural atmosphere, feelings of being in ancient times and in a military setting. That’s as far as he got. He’d never lived in the country and had never been in the military. He looks forward to his next foray into his past. Once the subject is in a very relaxed or hypnotic state, Emerson begins to perform his “magic,” although he says it’s not magic at all, some of his success tales tell a different story. He tells me about a man with a fear of sirens, who he regressed into a life where he died in a fire. And a woman in her 80s who had always had difficulty breathing when she saw spiders. In her regression, she saw a life where she had been imprisoned in a dungeon. As a result of the regression, her breathing improved. He said he helped cure a man of a lifelong stuttering problem in 10 minutes and has helped countless people

overcome bad habits like smoking and overeating. “At this point, I started looking at it from a more physical side, like how could I take this which was helping people spiritually and help people physically?” he mused. “So I started using this deep meditative state because I could help people stop smoking and lose weight,” Is this a gift? Or can anyone do these things? “I think anyone could do it. The gift you must have is the desire to help other people,” he believes. “The subconscious mind is in charge. It knows what it’s doing. It draws you to things. And so you grow." “People come to me with issues they are feeling today. It’s not just about knowing who you were in a previous life. Everything is about cause and effect. The fears and problems you are having today are rooted in the past, something you forgot. Once you see that, and you realize through today’s adult eyes, what it was and where it came from, there’s usually no reason to be afraid today. It can go away.” Flash forward to the present Emerson, like many of us, packed up and sold his business and headed south to the warmer climes and easier lifestyle of South Florida. After years of practicing his craft for free, he's in the process of setting up shop as a board certified hypnotist at the American Legion Hollywood Post 92 on Dixie in Hollywood. A soon-to-be new member of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (his wife, Cynthia, works in Member Relations at the Chamber), he will continue to work with all veterans free of charge. “If I can help anyone, especially vets with PTSD, I’m happy to do it, because again, I don’t have the answers, but I know the questions. The answers lie within the mind of the person I’m working with." “The possibility of what this can do covers such a large area,” continued the hypnotist. “Basically, people are running around depending on their conscious mind to make their decisions and it’s the reason so many people end up not where they want to be. So you have to find out why, why are you thinking this way? To help people have a better understanding of themselves, that’s the whole thing. And the more you have a better understanding of yourself, the happier you’re going to be.” Rob Emerson can be reached by email at RobertEmerson1@yahoo.com or by phone at 978-697-3990. Leadership Hollywood: Leading Our City Into the Future

BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com

If you live in Hollywood, you have probably heard of the Leadership Hollywood program, and maybe even know of someone who’s been in it. And chances are, if you do know someone, you noticed that, after the nine months that they were in the program, something was a little different about them. What, you may have wondered, is this Leadership Hollywood? This season, I have the honor and the privilege to be a member of Leadership Hollywood Class XLII, that is, the 42nd group taking part in this world-class, ninemonth voluntary program which promises to change our city, our thinking and really, our lives. Here, I would like to share with you not only the nuts and bolts of the series but something about the people who give their time and energy to the community service to make it happen, and the projects we’re working on right now that make Hollywood the wonderful city that it is. Each year, the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce coordinates Leadership Hollywood, an interactive program where participants can view our community up close, work together and achieve a unique knowledge of resources and services available in Hollywood, Broward County and the State of Florida. Many local elected officials, business owners, non-profit leaders, educators, and city employees are Leadership Hollywood graduates. According to Marie Suarez, Chief Operating Officer of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and a graduate of

Leadership 26, Leadership Hollywood is similar to- although not officially related to other Leadership programs held throughout the county, the state and across the country. “Leadership Hollywood consists of nine unique program days, each providing an interactive forum through interface and communication with the current leaders in our community,” she explained. “All activities include maximum class member involvement, participation, and role-playing. Class members experience the process that guides them to better comprehend the challenges facing our community. “And,” she added proudly, “Hollywood is, in fact, one of the state’s longest-running leadership programs, with 42 consecutive classes.” Our nine-month commitment started out with an Orientation/Kick Off/Team Building day when we meet and get to know the rest of the team with whom we’ll soon become “best friends”, quickly followed by a Leadership Skills day where we learn more about ourselves, how we operate and, maybe more importantly, the “blind spots” that hinder our effectiveness. Our group this year is comprised of 37 people from all walks of life and livelihoods — education, non-profit, media, beauty, business, banking, real estate, healthcare, tourism, coaching, food and beverage, law, government and more. We have a Broward County elected official and an (acting) chief of police. Our youngest classmate is a 16-year-old high school student and our oldest is a 70-year-old retired professor from NSU. And we’re all learning and growing with every class we attend. Each LH day opens our eyes to new in-

formation about how Hollywood works. It feels like we’ve experienced so much in this program already that it’s hard to believe that we’re only up to our third field day out of eight! So far, we’ve had our Health and Human Services day, where we visited a

hospital, a homeless shelter, a senior center and a major food distribution center for feeding the hungry right in our area, fol-

Wow, I have always respected our first responders, but now, I am truly in awe of how they put their lives on the line for us every day. By the time you read this, we will have experienced our day on Education, Art & Culture. The rest of the curriculum features days focusing on Environmental Issues, Criminal Justice & Broward County Government, Media, City Government & Business Development and Tourism and, at the end, a Graduation celebration. All of our classes and activities require all of us to take part. No sitting out shyly allowed here! As class members, we really get to experience things that make us understand how our neighbors live and sometimes struggle with in their everyday lives. THE PEOPLE IN LEADERSHIP HOLLYWOOD “Leadership Hollywood changed my life, my beliefs about myself and the way I see my community,” said Shannon Stough, president of Benchmark Contracting and this year’s program co-chair, along with Adam Geller of Geller Legal. “It changed the things that I thought about homeless people, police, the health industry, some things by 180 degrees. By seeing these things first hand, I learned that I can change the way I feel; and that by changing the way I feel, I can shift the things that I think need to be changed." “Leadership Hollywood has given me tools and made me a leader,” he continued. “More than that, though, it creates community leaders. Commissioners, Mayors, people in the community making changes. As the people, we’re in charge of our community. We have to be in charge.” Shannon is a graduate of Leadership Hollywood 35. He has been active as a chair and vice chair for the past seven years. Many graduates return to the program year after year as day chairs and program chairs. “I take the time every year; it’s so important to me. And not just to me. We’re changing Hollywood, the county, the state and the world. I would do the same anywhere because once you learn how it works, you know it. You can’t go back. I’ll never be the guy I was before.” As co-chairs, Shannon and Adam organize the days and make sure they go smoothly. “It’s so fulfilling,” he said of his time with the program. “ We create the opportunity and then Oh My God — It’s really really satisfying to see people POP! We watch and we say, 'Oh, THIS is how it works!” Leadership Hollywood has indeed been 8

an incubator for many who have risen to high positions in the city. Just a few of the more notable alumni of the program are Mayor Josh Levy, Commissioners Debra Case, Peter Hernandez, Dick Blattner, Kevin Biederman and Linda Sherwood, and far too many local business leaders to mention. TAKING IT TO THE STREETS One of the major components of Leadership Hollywood is the Community Project. Each year the group takes on four or five diverse activities designed to benefit some part of our city. “By working as a team on a Leadership Community Service project, participants get hands-on experience and make a difference for the Greater Hollywood community,” stated Beth A. Allen of the NSU Lifelong Learning Institute and vice chair of Community Service Projects. “The excitement of working together to create something allows for emerging leaders to grow and develop new skills.” The projects are big, dynamic and often created by the Leadership Team; sometimes they become Legacy projects which last beyond the current class. Always they make a lasting difference. “I was in “Leadership Hollywood 40;” recalled Brian Rademacher, the other Community Service Projects vice chair, who works for the city of Hollywood on the Economic Development Team. “My project was the Feeding South Florida Summer Hunger campaign. It was fun, but more than that, all the projects have a profound impact on the city, both socially, from the point of giving back, and also on the economic development of the city. They demonstrate what the city has to offer. And, it’s so great to see so many people from different walks of life putting in so much time, watching them embrace the projects and the value they’re adding to the community and mostly, seeing them when they have their ‘AHA moments’.” Brian’s team at work is charged with creating business development and retention for the city. “My passion, my motto, is Linking and Leverage,” he explained. “Everyone has so many talents and skills, and they know others with more talents and more skills. When we ask ‘What can we do together?’, that begins the implementation that brings transformation and change. Leadership Hollywood creates groups of leaders asking those questions. We see the synergy happening. It creates a spark for bringing about change.” THE PROJECTS SPARK HOLLYWOOD May 17 in the Arts Park at Young Circle

Coincidentally, SPARK is the name of one of the projects that Leadership Hollywood is working on this year. A creation of LH40, this Shark Tank-like program is an event that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship for local inventors, entrepreneurs and small businesses. The event will feature a “quick pitch” competition where entrepreneurs and start-up business vie for cash and in-kind prizes. Application deadline is April 17. LEADING THE WAY INTO THE FUTURE Everything we learn in this ninemonth journey increases our skills and gives us new tools to turn us into leaders in our community; help us contribute more to our organizations, our neighborhoods, our city as a whole — even our families and smaller groups. In the program, we meet and learn from people from across many sectors; public, private and not-for-profit, and from what we’ve heard from prior participants, we make lifelong friends. Even I, who think I’ve heard it all before, have already learned so much about my city and myself through this process, and we’re only up to the third full program day! This experience, it was promised, will benefit participants both personally and professionally, and be a life-changing experience. So far, Leadership Hollywood is delivering on its promise. Happy Valentine's Day to our amazing son Rafael & to our pawsome Lola & Kane. Love Mommy & Daddy.

As you advance toward your seventies you tend to look back more than forward. Your aches and pains remind you of the decades you have passed through and you wonder how much quality life remains. If you are fortunate, you receive an “adrenaline shot”, grand children. They bring you such joy and happiness that words are inadequate. You enjoy them for who they are but also for whom they are constant reminders of- your own children. This transport in time makes you feel younger and more energetic. 2018 State of the City And the winner is….Hollywood! Oh, Hollywood, it’s a helluva town — home values are up and crime is down. No matter how you felt about it personally, 2017 was a banner year for the great city of Hollywood. And every indication is that the trends are going to continue. So, let’s take a look at some highlights for the fiscal year 2017: PROPERTY VALUES Residential and commercial property values are way up. Citywide, we enjoyed a 15.6% year over year increase in taxable property value. We went from being a

$13.2 billion city to a $15.3 billion city, in one year; the greatest city value appreciation of all the cities in Broward County. The goal, said Mayor Josh Levy, is to get us to be an $18 billion city. Doing so will enable our city government to have a better capacity to fund continuing improvements to services, public spaces, and infrastructure. We are, he believes, well on our way. In 2017, Hollywood issued over 13,000 building permits, so many that the City’s old Building Department systems had a hard time keeping up. 2017’s building permits brought in improvements valued at $365 million, with the majority of permits

for smaller projects. This is important because it indicates that broad reinvestment is taking place in neighborhoods throughout the city, adding to the longevity of our housing stock and helping to sustain the residential tax base. JOBS, JOBS, JOBS! Hollywood’s primary employment drivers continue to be tourism, healthcare, and the service sector, and all grew in 2017, with unemployment at record lows – under 4%. In 2017, we added over 2,000 new jobs, in hospitality, construction, retail, healthcare, specialty manufacturing, the service industry, and other sectors. Most notable was the creation of over 1,000 new jobs at Chewy.com’s new customer service center at Hollywood Hills Plaza. We also saw the groundbreaking for Sintavia‘s new 52,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility at our Port 95 Commerce Park, creating 130 jobs. That’s in addition to Quantum Marine’s new 30,000 square foot facility at Port 95, and Fresenius Medical’s new Dialysis Center at 2700 Hollywood Blvd., which will create between 35 and 50 new jobs.

Business Tax Receipts indicate 2,304 new businesses registered in Hollywood in 2017, with a record total of 12,834 businesses now registered in our city. Driving through city commercial corridors such as Federal Highway, Dixie Highway and State Road 7, it’s clear that there is still so much more opportunity for new investment. In 2017, the city enacted new zoning to facilitate reinvestment in these corridors, and the City’s newly organized Department of Marketing, Communications, and Economic Development is working to attract additional investment to continue the City’s strong economic momentum. Lots of investments of all sizes are already in the pipeline from West Hollywood all the way to the beach, Levy added. KEEPING US SAFE: HOLLYWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT Hollywood realized an overall reduction in Part I Crime (murder and nonnegligent homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson) of 7% for 2017 compared to 2016. In particular, violent

Pets Rule at The Animal Medical Center and Bird Clinic of Hollywood BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com

It’s apparent to me who rules the roost when I enter the Animal Medical Center and Bird Clinic of Hollywood; There are three goodsized cats eyeing me intently -- one on the counter, one on the sofa, and one sniffing around my feet, daring me to go any further. But I am not deterred. I’ve come to meet Dr. Bob Schachner and his wife Bretta, who’ve owned this place for 19 years. And I must admit, I’m less interested in the dogs and cats, which are the majority of their business, and want to know more about the birds and other “exotic” animals that they treat. “The sign was on the door when we got here,” explained Bretta, a nurse by trade, who runs the business side of the medical center so the doctor can concentrate on getting the animals healthy, “so we never changed it. And we do get some...interesting patients.” Prior to purchasing the practice, Dr. Bob worked as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at UM, doing

transplant /diabetes research. Watching him work though, today on a more than usually sluggish tortoise, it’s clear that his love is working directly with the animals, exotic or not. “Dogs and cats are really about 85% of the pets that we see here,” noted Bretta. “Only about 15% are birds and others.” Among the others have been monkeys, possums, peacocks, chickens, ducks and goats. “Alligators too,” Dr. Bob added, “and marmosets, reptiles and miniature pigs.” As veterinarian on call for the Everglades Holiday Park, the Sawgrass

Recreation Park and in the past for a large cat sanctuary, they have often brought made house calls for larger animals and sometimes brought patients home overnight to monitor them. “Our kids were used to being around lions and tigers,” Bretta recalled. “One year our holiday card showed the family with lion cubs!” The Schachners, who met in college, have two children; their son Benjamin is at USF getting his masters of science in anatomy and applying to medical schools, and their daughter Rebekah is a junior at UCF and would like to pursue a graduate program in occupational therapy. They are proud that both have chosen to go into the health professions like their parents. Asked about some of his most interesting cases, Dr. Bob is hardpressed to say, as there have been, he said, so many. “We spayed and neutered

Thunder and Lightning, the miniature horses at the Calder Race Course,” he said. “I amputated a leg on a Key deer, and removed a tooth from a white tiger in Southwest Ranches. I once worked on a chinchilla. Around here, every day, you just never know what’s going to come through the door.” But the majority of the patients who come to see the doc are indeed, house pets, cats and dogs, and the love that Doctor Bob has for them is evident in the photos lining the walls of the office and in the care I see as he examines his latest patient. 19 years in the same location on US1 in Hollywood and lots of happy, long-term customers also tell the tale. Affordable, Weekly Gourmet Meal Delivery Service Launches in Hollywood; Portion of Proceeds Benefit Meals on Wheels BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com

Most charities run galas and fun runs to raise money to run their programs. But Meals on Wheels South Florida is sticking to its roots in its latest endeavor as it launches a partnership with Hollywood caterer Red Chair Catering. Complete Cuisine is a gourmet meal delivery service completely separate from the regular Meals on Wheels programs. A portion of Complete Cuisine’s proceeds directly benefits Meals on Wheels South Florida, which strives to end hunger across all ages with kindness, dignity, and compassion. Available in Broward and MiamiDade counties, for a variety of age demographics and dietary needs, the new service comes in at an affordable price point compared to similar meal delivery services currently in the market. Red Chair Catering is a family

owned and operated business based in Hollywood by chefs Joe Grenat and Jessica Rosales. In addition to designing the menu and cooking, Rosales handles sales and marketing while Grenat runs operations. Since 2014, they have been known for serving delicious food throughout the tri-county area, focusing on corporate catering and all types of celebratory events. “We’ve been able to work with other non-profit organizations in our community for the last four years, and we’re excited to partner with Meals on Wheels South Florida. This partnership will allow both of our organizations to serve a wider demographic of people looking for healthy, gourmet meal options delivered directly to their doors,” said Rosales. Red Chair was recently included on a short list of South Florida restaurants that had zero violations during an unannounced state inspection for the fourth quarter of 2017.

Expect Less Boredom at Boarding at Port Everglades for Cruise Passengers If you're one of the nearly 4 dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com million passengers expected to pass through Port Everglades this year, expect to be impressed. Exciting projects are in progress at this popular Port, most of which will allow for larger ships and improved services to passengers. Carnival recently completed an extensive, multi-million dollar redesign and upgrade of the port’s Cruise Terminal Two so guests can begin their personalized experience as soon as they enter the building. This retrofitted terminal is mostly used by the company’s Princess brand. New features include a movie theater and more comfortable boarding areas, enhancing guests’ experience as they prepare for boarding. In addition, Port Everglades has the first cruise terminal BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

in the world specially equipped for Carnival's new Ocean Medallion interactive wearable technology service. Over at terminal 25, renovation is underway, completely expanding the footprint of the building, adding a second-floor check-in and waiting area and improving the traffic circulation. The new state-of-the-art facility is expected to be ready at the end of 2018, in time for the arrival of Celebrity Cruises’ newest ship, the Celebrity Edge The Celebrity Edge, which will hold 2,918 passengers, is considered a "futuristic" ship. It is the first ship in Celebrity Cruises’ new class of ships in nearly a decade. The ms Nieuw Statendam is Holland America Line’s newest Pinnacle-class ship. This 2,650 passenger ship will begin sailing from Port Everglades in December 2018. There will also be four more cruise

ships operating out of Port Everglades in the summer of 2018, a time when cruise traffic has traditionally been slower, according to Ellen Kennedy, spokesperson for the Port. Improvements for Cargo Ships Meanwhile, work is continuing on the South Port Turning Notch Extension project, the largest project at the port. The entire project, projected to cost about $500 million, will lengthen the existing deepwater turnaround area for cargo ships from about 900 feet to 2,400 feet, allowing for five new cargo berths. Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes will also be added to serve the existing Southport container berths. The crane rails will be extended to the full length of the existing Turning Notch berth to utilize the existing cranes.Port Everglades is the number one seaport in Florida by revenue -- $161.7 mil-

lion -- and the number one container port in Florida, and number 10 in the nation by volume. It is the number one seaport in Florida for exports, with $11.7 billion in exports, and $10.4 billion in imports. It is the home port to the world’s largest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean’s 5,400 passenger Oasis-class ships. It holds the world’s record for the most cruise guests in a single day – 55,885 guests arrived and departed from Port Everglades on March 13, 2016. All of this is great news for Hollywood in terms of increased economic development for the city and surrounding area. Hotels, restaurants, and stores should see increased activity and income, ultimately leading to more job opportunities and business development for the city.

3 Reasons To Keep An Eye On Bitcoin – But Not Bet The Farm By Jason Labrum One moment the world is warned the bitcoin bubble is about to burst, and the next the popular cryptocurrency takes a gigantic leap in value. That volatility makes it difficult for investors – or at least some investors – to decide whether bitcoin will enjoy a bright future or whether it’s a financial version of Beanie Babies, a fad that will quickly fade. If you’re confused, don’t feel bad. Many financial professionals are still figuring out what to make of bitcoin themselves, says Jason Labrum, founder and president of Labrum Wealth Man-

agement (www.labrumwealth.com) and author of Financial Detox: How to Steer Clear of Toxic Advice, Achieve Financial Independence and Manage Your Wealth for Maximum Impact. “Unfortunately almost anything connected with the future of bitcoin is speculative right now,” Labrum says. “When you look at the sophistication level of the average person buying bitcoin, it’s scary. They just see an asset that at times has gone up a whole lot in value, so you get a herd mentality of people wanting to jump on the bandwagon.” Still, bitcoin is a fascinating development in the world of currency

and one worth watching – even if with a little skepticism, he says. Just a few factors to keep an eye on or be aware of include: • There’s potential for a regulatory crackdown. Bitcoin has already been hit by a crackdown from Chinese officials who have been severely restricting the use of cryptocurrencies. That may not happen in the United States, Labrum says, but countries around the world are going to deal with cryptocurrency in their own way and as they do, everyone could be affected. Regulation could help give cryptocurrency more legitimacy – or it could undermine what many people like most about it. • Bitcoins exist as software, not physical currency. Even though bitcoins are not illegal, they also are not legally recognized by governments as a currency. The currency also can be traded without being tracked, thus raising the potential for illicit activity, such as money laundering. • Cryptocurrency could represent a paradigm shift in our monetary

system. What seems odd now – a virtual system of money – might be routine in a decade or two. Part of the reason bitcoin has surged is speculation that perhaps one day digital money will become a legitimate global currency, replacing coin and paper as the new legal tender. “It will be interesting in 20 years to look back on the conversations we are having today about bitcoin,” Labrum says. “By then, cryptocurrency could be a normal part of everyone’s life, or it could be a once-trendy thing that everyone has forgotten about.” “So much about bitcoin and how it will play out is still unknown,” Labrum says. “If someone wanted to invest 2 or 3 percent of their portfolio in it just to get a small taste, that might be fine. But I don’t think anyone should be loading up 20 or 30 or 40 percent of their portfolio on this.” Jason Labrum is founder and president of Labrum Wealth Management (www.labrumwealth. com) and is author of the upcoming book Financial Detox: How to Steer Clear of Toxic Advice, Achieve Financial Independence and Manage Your Wealth for Maximum Impact.

Voting Restoration Amendment Qualifies for Nov. Ballot Floridians from all walks of life believe in second chances and, in November, can vote YES on 4 to make sure that Florida law does too. With the help of a committed grassroots effort, Floridians across the Sunshine State signed and submitted more than 1.1 million petitions and put the Second Chances Voting Restoration Amendment on the November ballot. Floridians from all walks of life believe in second chances and, in November, can vote YES on 4 to make sure that Florida law does too. “Through the hard work of Florida voters and unwavering dedication of a truly grassroots movement, we have reached a historic milestone and have officially placed the Second Chances Voting Restoration Amendment on the ballot,” said Desmond Meade, Chair of Floridians for a Fair Democracy and spokesperson for Second Chances Florida Campaign. “Voters took matters in their own hands to ensure that their fellow Floridians, family members, and friends who’ve made past mistakes, served their time and paid their debts to society are given a second chance and the opportunity to earn back their ability to vote.” Nearly 1.5 million people in Florida, who have served their time and paid their debts to society, are permanently excluded from voting. This amendment will make sure Floridians, who have paid their debts in full, are given the opportunity to have their voices heard. The amendment specifically excludes those individuals who have committed murder or a felony sexual offense. Ash Mason, Chairman of the Christian Coalition of Florida said, “People believe in forgiveness, redemption, restoration and, ultimately, second chances. It is why voters from all corners of the state and all walks of life – including religious groups and people working to build stronger communities – support the Voting Restoration Amendment. It’s simply the right thing to do.” Leon County Sheriff Walt Mc-

Neil, former Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections said, “Restoring a person’s ability to vote gives them an opportunity for redemption and a chance to be full members of their community. Studies by the Office of Offender Review show that people who earn the ability to vote

are less likely to commit crimes in the future. By helping people become responsible citizens, we create safer communities.” Florida has the most restrictive policies in the nation with respect to limiting the ability to vote for citizens who have paid their debts to

society. It is one of only four states with a lifetime ban on voting. Current law outlines a long and difficult process to restore an individual’s ability vote. To learn more about the Second Chances Campaign, visit www. SecondChancesFL.org.

Paragon Academy wins basketball championship with new MVP from Puerto Rico Like many schools in South Florida, Paragon Academy Middle School has had an influx of students from Puerto Rico after the Hurricane Maria devastated their homes. One of those students, Jose Hernandez scored 22 points in a division championship basketball game in January for the school, earning him the MVP title on the team. Paragon Academy Middle School is located at 502 North 28th Avenue Hollywood, FL 33020.

Hollywood Residents Coalesce to Create New Animal Rescue Team and Shelter A group of Hollywood dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com residents is in the beginning stages of creating an organization known as the Hollywood Animal Rescue Team (H.A.R.T.). According to Donna O’Keefe, a volunteer with the H.A.R.T., the goal of the new group is to save the many dogs that are picked up off the streets and prevent thousands of dogs from being euthanized. In addition, the organization hopes to build a shelter, possibly at Stan Goldman Memorial Park, which is located at 800 Knights Road in Park East and already includes the "Hollywood" dog park. It would provide shelter for dogs that are found on the streets for up to five days. After the five days, the dogs would be handed over to a no-kill shelter. Another possible location being considered is at the corner of I-95 and Hollywood Boulevard. "Animal abuse has been thrust to the forefront and has become a major topic and focus for those of us who wish to see a change in the BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

laws regarding animal cruelty and/or abuse," said Hollywood resident and H.A.R.T. volunteer Susan Hart. The organization hopes to raise $250,000 for its endeavors, and support is growing for the cause. According to O’Keefe, the manager of the Hollywood Walmart has offered to set aside 2018 grant money for H.A.R.T. The manager also said that in addition to the grant money, Walmart would be donating dog and cat food and litter to the organization. In addition, Waste Pro USA and other sponsors have promised to make contributions. Hollywood Commissioner Traci Callari is pleased that efforts are being made to develop this program. She said meetings have been conducted and many people are interested. “We have had an unbelievable turnout and we are having meetings about the shelter," said Callari. "I love this. It is all based on volunteers with a passion for animals.”

Feeding South Florida’s “Outrun Hunger 5k” Returns to Hollywood Broadwalk February 24th BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD

By John Hagensen

MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com

More than 500 people are expected at the Hollywood Beach Boardwalk on the morning of February 24th to “take steps to end hunger in South Florida” when they take off at the 8th Annual Feeding South Florida Outrun Hunger 5K, presented this year by JM Family Enterprises, Inc. Feeding South Florida, a member of the Feeding America® network of food banks and the leading domestic hunger-relief organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, invites runners at all levels to join the event. You can register here: fsfoutrunhunger5k. eventbrite.com, either as an individual or as part of a team. For every registration of the Outrun Hunger 5k event, $20, Feeding South Florida can provide 120 meals. By raising $50, you can help

provide 300 meals, and also receive an official Outrun Hunger 5k t-shirt. Feeding South Florida rescues 46 million pounds of food annually, serving 710,370 individuals in need of food assistance — 248,080 of whom are children and 120,000 are older adults. The proceeds will not only go towards ending hunger throughout South Florida, but will also help create awareness throughout the community and help your neighbors in need. The event will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 7:30 a.m – 9:30 a.m. It begins at Charnow Park, 1500 N Broadwalk, at Garfield Street.

Donate Old Furs by April 22 to Help Injured and Orphaned Animals Stay Cozy Buffalo Exchange Gives Fur Back to Wildlife through Annual Coats for Cubs Drive -- Bring Your Old Coats to Hollywood Boulevard Store by April 22 to Help Injured and Orphaned Animals Buffalo Exchange, a pioneer in buying and selling recycled fashion, has begun collecting furs for its annual Coats for Cubs drive. Until April 22, customers can donate real fur coats and trimmings at the Hollywood store or any of the 49 Buffalo Exchange locations across the country. All collected furs are then sent to wildlife rehabilitators, where they are re-purposed into bedding that nurtures recovering wild animals, providing more warmth and familiarity than other options like towels and sheets. “It really helps the animals to have something to snuggle into,” says Jody Raines of Illinois Valley Wildlife Rehab. “It appears to relax them and makes them easier to work with. Every baby heads right to the fur hiding place when I take them in.” 28

4 Ways To Boost Your Income In Retirement

According to Buffalo Exchange Vice President Rebecca Block, “Our Coats for Cubs drive is a unique way to give back to wildlife conservation. It helps injured and orphaned wildlife by keeping baby animals warm and minimizing human contact during the recovery process. It also gives our customers another way to recycle these kinds of items.” The program has seen great success since 2006, when Buffalo Exchange joined the Humane Society of the United States in its collection efforts. The family-owned resale chain, which is now the sole operator of the drive, has collected and distributed over 13,644 furs to wildlife rehabilitators nationwide. Last year alone, Buffalo Exchange collected 1,390 furs to give back to the animals. Visit CoatsForCubs.org to learn more and see photos of some of the animals who have benefited from donated furs. For information, call the Hollywood store at (954) 921-6589 or visit them at 1916 Hollywood Blvd.

Longer lives, fewer pensions and limited savings are a combination that has plenty of people worried when they look ahead to their retirement years. With nearly 60 percent of Americans saying that running out of money is their No. 1 concern, many of them are scrambling to figure out how they can make their money last the duration of a retirement that could drag on for 20 to 30 years or more. “Of course, one way is that you can take a part-time job after your retire, or you could just vow to spend less,” says John Hagensen, founder and managing director of Keystone Wealth Partners (www.Keystonewealthpartners.com) and author of Unleash Your Investments. “But those aren’t options a lot of people find very attractive.” In truth, there are no easy solutions, but Hagensen says there are steps you can take that can help boost your retirement bottom line. A few of those include: • Treat your nest egg with generosity. As you save for retirement, contribute generously to your retirement accounts. If you max out your contributions to your accounts, instead of just contributing the minimum, you’ll have significantly more stashed away when you reach retirement. That translates into more income. • Retire later than planned. “Obviously, if you can’t stand your job, this is not ideal,” Hagensen says. “But putting off retirement for a few more years is not a bad option if you enjoy your work. That gives you additional time to save more and fewer years in retirement in which you’ll need to draw off your savings.” • Maximize your Social Security benefits. When and how you decide to start drawing Social Security can make a significant difference in your benefits. “Various factors can come into play when making Social Security deci-

sions, such as how your income taxes might be affected,” Hagensen says. “It’s also worth noting that for every year you delay taking Social Security benefits, your yearly income increases by about 7 percent. If you delay past your full benefits age, which is 66 or 67 for most people, then your benefits actually grow by 8 percent a year, up until you reach age 70.” • Consider adding a fixed annuity in your retirement. “The key word here is ‘consider,’ “Hagensen says. Annuities are not right for everyone, and one of the reasons they often get a bad rap is that they are sold to people without any strategic plan or without any consideration about whether they are right for an individual’s situation. “Sometimes I see people who have 60 or 70 or 80 percent of their retirement portfolio in an annuity,” he says. “Annuities should be used as just a small percentage within your portfolio to create stability and a foundation.” Hagensen cautions that all the financial planning in the world doesn’t mean a lot if people don’t stick to the plan. “And unfortunately, the data show us that they rarely do,” he says. “Emotions kick in and they make decisions based on those emotions. But if you can be disciplined and follow through on what you know are the better decisions, then you have a great chance of increasing the amount of money you will have in retirement.” John Hagensen is the founder and managing director of Keystone Wealth Partners (www. Keystonewealthpartners.com). He also is author of Unleash Your Investments and hosts a weekly radio show, Myth Busting with Keystone Wealth Partners.

HEALTH

Hollywood Ophthalmologist Shares Six Tips to Prevent Macular Degeneration By: Alan Mendelsohn, MD, FACS Macular Degeneration is the most common cause of blindness in Americans older than 50. The disease reduces the quality of central vision, ranging from a mild loss to a devastating impairment in vision. That is the bad news. Here is the good news. As a Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Fellowship Trained Ophthalmologist with more than 30 years of experience, I can assure you we can detect macular degeneration, even at its beginning stages, before symptoms arise. The earlier the diagnosis is made, the earlier we can start treatment with the hope of preserving as much of your eyesight as possible. The macula is a small area in the center of the retina. Its function is to see details of objects in the very center of your vision like the pages of a book or newspaper you are currently reading. While focusing, the macula is of paramount importance to driving, using digital devices, reading, recognizing faces or colors, and seeing objects in fine detail. There are two forms of macular degeneration. Dry AMD is the most common and is occurs when the macular tissue gets thinner with age, slowly degrading your central vision. Wet AMD is much more serious than Dry AMD but far less common. Wet AMD is caused by the growth of

3. Take AREDS 2 Vitamin supplementations, such as Ocuvite 50+ or Preservision. They contain six key active ingredients, Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Zinc and Copper, in one pill. Alternatively, you can incorporate those six ingredients into your daily diet. 4. Increase consumption of alpha omega 3 fatty acids, including salmon, mackerel, herring, snapper as well as walnuts, hazelnuts, linseed and flaxseed oil.

abnormal blood vessels under your retina. If those blood vessels leak, they will damage the macula, which will quickly impair your central vision. There are many factors at play with the development and progression of macular degeneration. Smoking, UV light exposure, blue light emissions from digital devices, lack of dietary intake of key ingredients necessary for macular health, and genetics are all scientifically proven risk factors. Prevention is the key. We perform a comprehensive eye exam and OCT macular diagnostic test, to detect drusen, which can be a precursor to macular degeneration. If you are diagnosed with macular degeneration, the key is to have a trained medical professional to diligently monitor your eye health,

advising on treatment options if the need arises. Comprehensive eye exams and OCT diagnostic tests, at appropriate intervals, are of paramount importance to vigilantly safeguard macular health and quality of vision. We also believe there are things you can do to prevent or minimize macular degeneration: 1. Stop smoking immediately. Smoking provokes oxygen deficiency to your tissues and decreases the absorption and effectiveness of Vitamin E and other crucial elements. 2. Wear sunglasses with UV400 blocker and polarization on both lens surfaces.

5. Purchase ophthalmic lenses with “blue blocker” which minimizes transmission of Blue Light from digital devices including computers, tablets, smartphones, fluorescent lights and sun exposure. 6. Schedule a comprehensive eye examination, including appropriate diagnostic testing, with an eye physician. These appointment can be a sight-saver. Have you been diagnosed with macular degeneration? You have options. Please contact Eye Surgeons and Consultants of Hollywood, Fla at 954- 894-1500 to set up your appointment or visit www.myeyesurgeons.com for more information.

City Leaders Push for General Obligation Bond Hollywood City Staff are bedvolz@hollywoodgazette.com ginning the effort to promote the idea of a general obligation bond to city residents. They are also trying to see how much interest there might be for such a bond, which would mean additional taxes for homeowners. Raelin Storey and other staff members have been going to neighborhood organization meetings to talk with residents and see what they might be willing to vote for. There are three options being BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

discussed for the bond. A very large bond could pay for a new police station, a new city hall and various improvements to streets, parks, and lighting. A mid-level bond would also pay for infrastructure improvements as would a lower cost bond. During meetings, residents have said they want to see big improvements at the Orangebrook Golf and Country Club. Some would like to see a world-class golf course that would be suitable for tournaments as well as a golf course for more casual golfers. But all these projects come at

a price. Preliminary estimates for a new city hall would be about $35 million and a new police station would cost about $49 million. LED lighting around the city installed would cost about $7 million. Various neighborhood improvements would cost about $6 million and sidewalk expansion would be about $8 million. Street resurfacing would cost about $6 million. New fire equipment would cost about $5 million. “Right now we are gauging the interest of residents to see what they might want and what they would

vote for. We may find out there are some things people won’t vote for,” said Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the city government. Even though some residents might not be eager to pay for a new police station and city hall, both buildings are considered old and outdated. There is a need for other infrastructure improvements throughout Hollywood as well. Community meetings and workshops will continue to be held to give residents a chance to voice their opinions and concerns.

HOLLYWOOD STARS

The Hollywood Couple that Works, Parents, Studies and Plays Together… Stays Together Hollywood residents Chinara and Teth Milligan are an inspiration for cynics everywhere. Their story flies in the face of those who think doing everything together is a recipe for marital disaster. At Broward College, Chinara Milligan is the executive assistant and admission coordinator at the Honors College -- she manages everything related to admissions and graduation. Her husband Teth Milligan works in facilities where he’s responsible for inventory, planning and maintenance tasks. Working for the same employer is just the tip of the iceberg for their shared experiences. This year, Chinara and Teth both graduated with their BAS degrees in Supervision and Management. They began their educational journey together in 2010 by earning their associate degrees. Now, they plan to pursue master’s degrees together as well. A typical day for the Milligans starts at 5 am and ends at midnight as they work, study, and parent their two children. The Milligans say the pushed each other to achieve so much and couldn’t have done it without each other. Their eldest son currently is at FSU and is so proud of his parents; of course, he came home to watch them graduate. "My husband Teth and I have been in love for almost 15 years and have been married since 2006," said Chinara. "We met and became friends in middle school but fell in love years later. We have both been employed at Broward College since 2007. Our Broward College family has been super sup-
