Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute
Treating the Nation’s Number-One Disease
by L. Kenneth Barnett Commissioner South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System
I
n February, our thoughts naturally turn to hearts. But while we’re celebrating our loved ones with valentines and expressions of affection, we also must remember that our hearts are the source of the country’s leading health challenge. More than 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year, a condition that affects all racial and ethnic groups — and people of all ages.
That’s why the teams at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Memorial Healthcare System and at the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital work hard every day to prevent, detect and treat cardiac disease in both children and adults — bringing new procedures, new improvements and new people to offer outstanding, evidence-based, TotalHeart care in South Florida. And 2014 brought some major milestones in cardiac care at Memorial. In September, Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute made Broward history with the county’s first adult heart transplant. A 51-year-old patient suffering from advanced endstage heart failure underwent six hours of surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital. After three weeks as an inpatient, she was successfully discharged home. Nine days after that first surgery, Memorial’s second adult patient underwent his heart transplant. Both patients are recovering today and enjoying what is truly, for them, a second chance at life. The adult transplants at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute have followed the tremendous success of the pediatric heart transplant program at the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Since the program began in 2010, 18 pediatric transplant surgeries have been performed, giving children with congenital heart disease something very special:
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Heart Institute cardiac team members (left to right): Frank Scholl, MD; Steven Bibevski, MD/PhD; Gerald Lavandosky, MD; Richard Perryman, MD; Edward L. Bove, MD; Kak-Chen Chan, MD; Larry A. Latson, MD; Maryanne Chrisant, MD; Ming-Lon Young, MD, MPH; and Lilliam Valdes-Cruz, MD
the chance to live normal, happy, active lives. The transplant program joins the Heart Institute’s other cardiac programs — cardiac surgery, diagnostic cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, high-risk perinatal treatment and interventional catheterization — which, together, offer the full menu of integrative cardiac services for even the tiniest of hearts. Patients and families at the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital now also can call upon the expertise of internationally renowned pediatric cardiac and thoracic surgeon Edward L. Bove, MD, who joined the cardiac team in April. Dr. Bove has served as professor of surgery at leading educational institutions across the country, and has consulted for numerous healthcare providers nationwide and around the world. He is working collaboratively with the institute’s team of cardiac specialists while continuing as cardiac surgeon at C.S. Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan Health System. Today, Memorial is building on 2014’s successes with the addition of more than 20 distinguished cardiologists, who have formed Memorial Division of Cardiac Services to provide an even wider array of cardiac services to adult patients. These employed physicians will continue Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute’s excellent performance in the prevention, detection and treatment of heart disease. I already know the virtues and talents of Memorial’s cardiovascular team as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District. But I’m also thankful to have experienced their skill as a patient. Last year, Dr. Michael Cortelli and his colleagues performed a double-valve replacement and a triple bypass after I suffered a staph infection of the heart. I’ve gone from about a 20 percent chance of recovery to a perfectly functioning heart. I was blessed to have such expertise so readily available to me — and I am grateful, heart and soul.

State Road A1A turn lane project at Sheridan St. on schedule for mid-April completion In order to improve the overall safety, functionality and traffic flow on Sheridan Street at the intersection of State Road A1A, the Florida Department of Transportation began work in the area on August 18, 2014. FDOT contractors completed the rehabilitation of the Intercostal Waterway bridge earlier this month. The bridge rehabilitation included applying a non-skid coating on the roadway surface to improve vehicle traction and safety. Crews also have installed the necessary signage, conducted asphalt milling and re-paving, applied striping and installed ADA compliant curbs, ramps and sidewalks. In late 2014 contractors stopped short of working on the intersection
of A1A and Sheridan Street after the discovery of utilities that were in conflict with two of the drill shafts locations. Crews have since cleared the utilities and work is scheduled this week to construct the two shafts. Upon completion of the shafts, the contractor will erect all mast arms and pull the signalization cables. Once completed, the contractor will have the new signal working by the end of February. The entire project is scheduled for completion by mid-April. For additional information on the A1A Turn Lane Project at Sheridan Street please call Jonathan Vogt, City of Hollywood Deputy Public Works Director at 954-921-3251.

This Valentine’s Day Celebrate the Love for Home
BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH
TEEN CORRESPONDENT
courtney.butterworth@aquinas-sta.org
As Valentine’s Day draws near this month, many people will be singing Nat King Cole’s famous song “L-O-V-E.” But as other people are trying to figure out who is looking at them in a way that deserves a “L”, let’s look at how Hollywood can be our one, and only, true love.
L is for…..Landmarks! Hollywood has many landmarks that we have come to know and love. One of our most iconic landmarks, Young Circle, was originally named Harding Circle by none other than Joseph Young himself, a man who loved Hollywood more than anyone else. He created a port in Hollywood so that people from many different areas could visit. Because of Joseph Young, Hollywood has become the city we adore. Today it is called the ArtsPark and is home to many activities that can fill up the calendar of every Hollywood resident. O is for…..Ocean! It is no secret that Hollywood is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida and in the opinion of many residents, the world! People from all over flock to walk along the approximately two and a half mile Broadwalk and gaze at our beautiful beach. 8
FEBRUARY 2015
Residents can often tell the visitors apart because they are not afraid to jump in the water in February when it may be too chilly for us! Also, March through October is turtle hatching season, so soon we will have yet another reason to love our beach! V is for…..Vendors! Downtown Hollywood is home to many different kinds of shops and restaurants, some of which are new and others that have been here for many, many years! There is something for everyone in the six blocks that are designated as the downtown area, from boutiques to art exhibits. Downtown Hollywood is the perfect place to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the people you love, in the city you love! E is for…..Everyone in it! The thing I love most about Hollywood is the wonderful people in it, so I asked Hollywood teenagers what they love most about Hollywood. Here are some of their answers: “ArtsPark at Young Circle and the area around it has so much life and creativity. The art classes, concerts, galleries, and restaurants for every taste make the Hollywood experience unique.” -Christine Berry, age 15 “I love the welcoming feeling of living in Hollywood. The love for our neighbors is relevant
anytime someone needs help. It’s an amazing thing that so many people can be bound together just because of where they live. [Hollywood is about] a message that proves that neighbors still are neighborly and that trust and love are most important.” -Willa Wood, age 15 “..without living in Hollywood, I never would have made such life-long memories and friendships. I am so thankful for all of the truly valuable relationships I have made in my hometown--Hollywood, FL!” -Antonia DeBianchi, age 16 “I love Hollywood because all the people are so nice to each other and everywhere you go, you are greeted left and right by people who love you. We are a family.” -Brandon Nathasingh, age 15 “My favorite thing about Hollywood is the comfort and familiarity I feel when in the city, from bike riding to the beach to going for walks in the neighborhood. Hollywood, the only place I have ever lived, gives me a sense of home. I know in the future when I look back on the past, the most prominent memory will be my time in Hollywood.” -Maria DeBianchi, age 16
Hollywood Park Elementary School develops gardens
SCHOOL NEWS
Students at Hollywood CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Park Elementary School are learning about plants and gardening by actually working on a garden project. Three gardens have been planted and about 75 students are working maintaining the gardens. There is butterfly garden that includes a wide variety of milkweed plants that help attract Monarch Butterflies And there is an edible garden that includes collards, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and garlic. There are marigolds that act as a natural protection against insects. The students will harvest the vegetables from this garden and prepared them to be used as food. There is also a herb garden. Raquel House, a first grade teacher wanted to give her students BY DAVID VOLZ
and hands-on gardening experience. “After completing book work on gardening went out and planted gardens,” said House. “We want students to know where food comes from. We received help from master gardeners.” Hollywood Park Elementary School received a $2,000 grant from the Broward Education Foundation to develop the garden. House hopes to plant another two gardens. Maria Diaz, a prekindergarten teacher at Hollywood Park said she wants students to learn about nutrition by harvest food from the edible garden. “We are producing organic vegetables and It important that children learn about the importance of proper nutrition.” Other teachers involved in the project include Eileen Santiago and Patricia Nix.

Broward County School Board partners with Broward College to advance mentoring program for minority males The Broward County School Board has partnered with Broward College to support and advance the Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (MTL) initiative by creating a mentoring program for minority males attending Deerfield Beach High School and Nova High School. This program combines peer and group mentoring to high school students and provides Broward College students, under the guidance of a faculty member, the opportunity to help high school students through the transition to college or the workforce. The partnership is made possible through $200,000 in state funding provided to the District by the Broward Legislative Delegation in support of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) Minority Male Mentoring initiative. The funds specifically support efforts to implement and enhance the District’s signature MTL program at Deerfield Beach High and Nova High. MTL is a peer-to-peer mentoring, student leadership and dropout prevention program that serves youth who are at-risk for not remaining in school and/ or graduating. Each school will have 200 minority male student participants in the program – 100 mentees matched with 100 mentors. The high school mentors in the MTL program are paired with a mentor of their own through the Broward College partnership. “This program is a direct link to
President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative aimed at helping young men and boys of color facing tough odds reach their full potential,” said Dr. Laurel Thompson, BCPS director of student services. “ When I go to the schools, I see dynamic energy, active engagement and rich learning happening on a daily basis.” "The mentoring program is a wonderful opportunity for Broward College student mentors to practice their mentoring and peer support skills,” said James Evans, Broward College North Campus dean of student affairs. “It’s equally beneficial for high school participants who are then provided with a comfortable, supportive environment to explore all of their challenges, both perceived and real, that they may face upon graduation.” Peer mentors receive training before they begin the program to learn mentoring skills, such as giving and receiving feedback, supervision, goal setting and career planning. Once completed, Broward College students are able to help the high school students develop goal setting and organizational skills, as well as look into career opportunities, including STEM career exploration.

Commissioner Traci Callari said she is concerned about the problem of blight in Hollywood. “One problem is that people don’t care,” she said before threatening to sic code enforcement on local residents who don’t meet her standards of caring. To be fair, many other commissioners and the Mayor also think you all need a visit from an official to discuss your “blight”.

HOLLYWOOD BEACH
Residents concerned about rising sea levels are taking proactive steps As the earth’s temperature CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com rises, so will the sea levels and the concerns of Hollywood residents who live along the beaches. A group of concerned Hollywood residents recently listened to a presentation of a research study called METROPOLE about some of the possible effects on rising sea level on the coastal areas. A major storm like Hurricane Wilma could cause a substantial loss of property along the beach. And this loss would be increased because of the rise of the sea level. Projections were made as far into the future as 2060. The study was based on all Broward County beaches. But it is difficult to say just how much property would be damaged or destroyed or how much money would be involved. Catherine Reynolds, a research associate at the University of South Florida said research is being conducted on the long-term effects on the rise of BY DAVID VOLZ

Reynolds said there are some basic things that can be done to protect property. These include building elevated buildings in case there is major flooding. Also, the installation of plants that can live on the beach could reduce the effects of flooding. And beach sand renourishment programs could help reduce flooding at the beach. METROPOLE is an integrated framework to analyze local decision making and adaptive capacity to largescale adaptive change. The study is led by the University of South Florida College of Marine Science and funded by the National Science Foundation. The project is engaging stakeholders in communities in Brazil, the United Kingdom and the United States to help understand perceptions about hazards and preferences of adaption options and funding sources in different communities.

MEMORIAL CANCER INSTITUTE PARTNERS WITH INTERNATIONALLY-RENOWNED CHEF MICHELLE BERNSTEIN TO BRING NEW FOOD OPTIONS TO CANCER PATIENTS Memorial Cancer Institute (MCI), a part of Memorial Healthcare System, is pleased to announce its new partnership with internationally renowned chef and South Florida native Michelle Bernstein, who will provide oncology patients with a variety of food alternatives to help ease their way through treatment. The partnership, made possible through funding from the Memorial Foundation’s Pink Angels, marks the first time the chef teams up with a medical facility. She chose the family of her hospital of birth for the endeavor. “I am honored to join forces with my Memorial family in this effort to help oncology patients who are undergoing chemotherapy feel better by experiencing different flavors of food,” said Chef Bernstein, who was born at Memorial Regional Hospital. “The fact that I am a Memorial child makes this all the more special to me, and I look forward to being personally involved in this project.” As part of the one-year agreement, Chef Bernstein will develop two signature recipes and a complete menu, created especially for MCI patients. She will personally train and provide assistance to the hospital’s kitchen staff on the implementation and execution of the recipes on the menu. Additionally, the chef will perform a cooking demonstration on behalf of MCI on World Cancer Day in February. The menu items will be available to patients receiving chemotherapy treatment at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “Patients who receive their chemo treatments often spend several hours here, and we provide snacks and food to them during this time,” said Maggie Wiegandt, vice president of oncology services, Memorial Cancer Institute. “What you choose to eat during treatment makes a big difference in terms of staying comfortable and feeling better. We are thrilled to have someone as widely respected as Chef Bernstein provide this unique service to offer our patients food options that will better agree with them.” About Memorial Foundation’s Pink Angels It’s a volunteer group of women who are dedicated to offering the community the latest in education and awareness on the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, and ensuring that the resources of Memorial Healthcare System are available. Do you suffer daily because of dry eyes?
D
ry eye syndrome is part of the natural aging process, and is a side effect of many medications, like antihistamines, antidepressants, and birth control pills to name a few. In fact, air conditioning can dry out your eyes. Also insufficient blinking, like when you’re staring at a computer screen or phone for extended periods of time. In addition, dry eyes are the most common complaint among long-term contact lens wearers. Recent research suggests that smoking, too, can increase your risk of dry eyes. Your eye doctor may diagnose dry eye syndrome if you suffer from persistant dryness, red eyes, scratchiness or a burning sensation. The entire issue is basically a chronic lack of moisture on the surface of the eye and can range from constant irritation to inflammation of the tissues of the eye. The actual medical term, keratitis sicca, means decreased quality or quantity of tears. Tears are made up of a few essential elements, including oils that prevent tear evaporation, produced by special glands in the eyelids called meibomian glands. Tears keep the eye moist, bathing it and clearing our debris. Tears also have certain enzymes that neutralize microorgan-

isms that grow on the eye and are absolutely essential for good eye health. While there are a few techniques to counter the effects of dry eye syndrome, one of the most promising, the use of Autologous Tears, is now being offered by the Hollywood Eye Institute. These tears are widely used in the management and treatment of difficult clinical conditions that do
not respond to other treatments. What are autologous tears? Very simply, they are eye drops made from a patient’s blood serum that improve symptoms of ocular surface disease and chronic dry eyes. Autologous serum eye drops are beneficial because they contain concentrations of vitamins and growth factors that are already in the body and important for
general eye health. “Ask us how we can help you improve your eye health and quality of life in general, and we’ll definitely have solutions for you.” says Dr. Shareen Greenbaum of the Hollywood Eye Institute. When it comes to the health of your eyes and vision, why wait? Look better, feel better, be better by coming into the Hollywood Eye Institute today. City Manager Minute
MUNICIPAL NEWS
“If you had one question, comment or concern for the new Hollywood City Manager, what would it be?” That was the post the Hollywood Gazette asked DR. WAZIR ISHMAEL its Facebook CITY MANAGER followers City of Hollywood to comment on back in December. As I read some of the feedback, I was pleased to see many comments focused on projects, issues or programs that are of major import here at City Hall. Some of you wanted to know about my priorities for the 1st year. One of my goals is to make sure we continue moving forward in a timely and efficient manner on the many projects we currently have underway, while taking steps to enhance efficiency, accountability and transparency across all city functions. There is a tremendous amount of work being done. The City and CRA are working on new zoning in downtown that will guide future growth and development. We’re investing in infrastructure like streets, sidewalks and underground utilities. Planning and/or construction are underway on major corridors, such as State Road 7 and Hollywood Boulevard, which will greatly enhance the appearance of these key commercial gateways over the next five years. We are investing in a new fire station in the western section of the City to make sure all our fire stations meet modern standards. We’re using impact fees paid by developers to fund park enhancements like the new Hollywood Dog Park that will be added as part of the upgrades now underway at Stan Goldman Park. We are ensuring the police officers who work to protect our safety have the training and equipment needed to do their jobs, and we’re investing in technology from cameras to license plate readers to give them state-of-the-art crime fighting tools. Our commissioners want the City’s neighborhoods to look better, so we’re increasing code enforcement with expanded hours and 7 day-a-week coverage by code officers, with more refinements to come. Some residents commented that we need to focus on the beach and downtown to attract tourists, while others suggested we stop focusing on the beach and pay more attention to western parts of the City. As City Manager, I want you to know I’m
focusing on the entire City. There are needed improvements city-wide. On Hollywood Beach and in downtown Hollywood, our Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is investing new tax revenue that’s been generated in those areas (and by state law can only be spent in those areas) to continue to underground utilities on the beach and enhance lighting in downtown. Due to improvements in the City’s financial condition and the benefit of grant funding, we’re now able to move forward with other needed projects including sidewalk construction, alleyway reconstruction, the new Fire Station 45 at 64th Avenue and roadway repaving. Hollywood Boulevard from City Hall to Dixie Highway will be re-imagined with new lighting, landscaping, seating and bike lanes through an $8.5 million grant from the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to make this roadway a “Complete Streets” model project. With development once again taking place throughout South Florida, it’s important for you to know, Hollywood is committed to the principles of smart growth and sustainability. We are fortunate to have more than 6 miles of coastline, 1,500 acres of natural mangrove preserves and abundant state, county and local parks within our City. Through the City Commission’s creation of the Green Team Advisory Committee and the dedication of committed staff, we are ensuring environmental protection and economic sustainability are part of Hollywood’s redevelopment equation. Meanwhile, the City continues to pursue green initiatives such as installing electric car charging stations in City-owned garages, adding electric cars to the city fleet, partnering with Broward B-Cycle and their Bike Sharing Program and applying innovative solutions that use nature to solve water management issues. Even smaller green projects, such as the rain garden that will be installed in Stan Goldman Memorial park, demonstrate Hollywood’s continued commitment to a cleaner environment and sustainability. Some of you asked about the condition of sidewalks or lack of sidewalks in certain areas. Research consistently shows neighborhoods with sidewalks have healthier residents and higher property values. Our Department of Public Works is pursuing grant funding to pay for additional sidewalks in areas that need and want them, and we’re participating in a $15 million mobility project by the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization to add sidewalks county-wide. Of course, sidewalks come with maintenance responsibility. As
years go by sidewalks crack and trees can uplift the pavement causing serious tripping hazards. Currently our Municipal Code of Ordinances holds property owners responsible for maintaining the sidewalks, swales and curbs adjacent to their property. To help off-set the costs of repairs, the City annually funds a 50/50 shared cost sidewalk replacement program to assist residential property owners with necessary sidewalk repairs. Upon request, the City will inspect the sidewalk and provide a firm construction cost estimate for consideration. A pavement management study was recently conducted by the City and presented before the City Commission. The study detailed conditions of all sidewalks, alleys and other hard surfaces within the City. The goal of the study was to gather information, so a resurfacing plan could be created and funds identified and appropriated by the City Commission. This plan includes how the City can get the “most mileage” (pardon the pun) out of the repaving that is already taking place as part of the Public Utilities water main replacement project in progress.
Meanwhile, we’re currently seeking bids for resurfacing work in other areas of need identified by the study. On the recreation side, Hollywood residents can be proud of the fact that there are 38 city parks in Hollywood, 11 community centers and 6 sports complexes. The majority of these facilities were upgraded or re-constructed with proceeds from the 2005 General Obligation Bond thanks to Hollywood residents who voted to see these facilities improved. Our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department strives to offer a wide array of offerings at these facilities. As a nationally accredited recreation department, they are continually challenged to show how they’re responsive to community concerns. I would encourage residents to check out the event listings published in the Hollywood Gazette, sign up for our City event information at www.hollywoodfl.org and read the City’s quarterly New Horizons magazine, there’s nearly always a recreational opportunity or event not far from home in Hollywood. Finally, I’m enjoying getting out into the community and meeting residents. I’ve already attended several neighborhood and civic association meetings and I’m continually impressed by the number of residents who are actively engaged in making Hollywood an even better place to live. We’ll certainly have challenges, but I’m feeling confident that 2015 will go down as a great year for Hollywood. . CUSTOM BLINDS, SHADES, SHUTTERS & DRAPES

Hollywood to restrict playground areas to children
Adults and teenagers will no CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com longer be permitted in Hollywood playgrounds unless accompanied by a child. Parents have expressed concerns about adults lurking around playgrounds where their children are playing. During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission passed an ordinance prohibiting adults and teenagers from being in a playground unless they are with a child no older than age 12. This restriction does not apply to City athletic fields. Hollywood Police Chief Frank Fernandez said this ordinance will protect the City’s children. Police officers will instruct adults and teenagers to leave playground areas if they see them hanging around. He said that police officers have been trained to deal with this matter and will used discretion when asking people to leave. Mayor Peter Bober said that some parents simply won’t take their children to the City’s parks if they are uncomfortable with the adults they see hanging around the parks and playgrounds. During the discussion phase, the question of whether elderly people could be permitted to be in the playground area

or whether younger teenagers could spend time there. Teenagers will be permitted in the play areas if they are caring for younger children. Hollywood Parks Director Chuck Ellis spoke during the meeting and said that it has been reported that teenagers have vandalized playground equipment and damaged the equipment by using it improperly. This ordinance addresses the safety of children in parks citywide, while maximizing the utilization of play areas and equipment available for children, for whom the equipment is specifically designed. There are currently thirty-eight play areas in Hollywood’s parks. Appropriate signs will be placed at the designated play areas reflecting the restrictions and how to report a violation. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts staff and Police Officers will monitor these areas for compliance and respond to complaints by any member of the public that observes what they believe to be a violation of the Code. A violator is subject to a fine of up to $500.00 and/or imprisonment for up to 60 days. The cost of producing and installing 94 signs at the forty (40) locations with designated play areas is $7,040.00.

LOVE-DAY LAUNCH SET FOR LIFESTYLE BRAND CATERING TO THOSE IN RECOVERY FROM ADDICTION Hollywood resident launches new venture Feb. 14 featuring spiritually stylish shirts & sobriety gifts At face value, Pink Clouds & Hula Hoops could easily be mistaken as the name of a little girls' clothing or toy store. Nothing could be further from the truth. Pink Clouds & Hula Hoops was created to fill a void in the market for a lifestyle retail brand catering to those in recovery (from addiction). Featuring spiritually stylish shirts and clever sobriety gifts/novelties speaking the language and reflecting principles of recovery, Pink Clouds & Hula Hoops will go live with its online boutique on February 14th - the Day of Love! On the very same day, in addition to its online shopping site, Pink Clouds & Hula Hoops will also celebrate a physical launch at the Rockers In Recovery Free Music Festival (www.
rockersinrecovery.org/events/rirmusic-festival/) at C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines. Founder & Creative Director Meredith A. Brown explains that Pink Clouds & Hula Hoops was inspired by do good, feel good brands such as Life is good. ® "It's not just merchandise; it's a movement to raise awareness that the hushed archaic stigma of being 'In Recovery' is passé; rather it is a proud & positive phenomenon about second chances & silver linings. "That is why our mantra is ROL! (Recover Out Loud)," said Brown, a Hollywood resident. "The real dream is to see this concept become mainstream!" Hollywood Commission recognizes the work of the Broward County Human Trafficking Coalition BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT
dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com
Human trafficking is a significant problem in Hollywood and Broward County. And the Broward Human Trafficking Coalition (BHTC) is working hard to raise awareness of the prevalence of this problem and put an end to it. Recently the BHTC made a presentation at a Hollywood Commission meeting on the work that it is doing. Mayor Peter Bober read a proclamation and declared January 11 Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Hollywood. “I have been involved for five years. My personal goal is to raise awareness of this epidemic among first responders and clinicians,” said Dr. Heidi Schaeffer, spokesperson for the BHTC. “Our mission is to raise awareness of this problem. We are grateful to the City of Hollywood for raising awareness of human trafficking.” Human Trafficking is extremely prevalent in Hollywood. Broward County is the number one county for human trafficking in Florida and Florida ranks third in the United States for human
trafficking. “We find that in general Florida attracts a lot of tourists and people who have the wealth to buy the commodity of their choice. And that commodity can come in the form of a young boy or girl,” said Schaeffer. “These offenders will repeat their crimes again and again. And the predators outweigh the number of officers who can track these crimes.” Schaeffer said it is important for government officials to raise awareness of this problem. “It takes a village to stop this epidemic including regular citizens who can report this activity,” she said. And human trafficking can take many forms. It may involve coercive labor situations. It may involve inappropriate sexual conduct over the Internet. The BHTC is working to establish outreach activities involving environments ranging from schools to truck stops. These are places where someone might observe the effects of human trafficking. The organization is also arranging community meetings where people can discuss the problem and how to be part of the solution. Schaeffer wants the community to get involved and to report suspicious activity. The hotline for the National Human Trafficking Resource Center is 888 3737 888.

During a hard time in his life, he was helped by the Jubilee Center. “Many people are facing difficulties and we try to help them,” he said.

She’s taking steps, even jumping on trampolines,” says Chris, Caressa’s dad. “As you see her triumph everyday, it’s a blessing.”
