Imagine Your New Life WEIGHT-LOSS SURGERY CAN HELP YOU LEAD THE LIFE YOU DESERVE Steve considers the day he had weight-loss surgery the day he was reborn. “I knew I needed to change my life—drastically. So I went to Dr. Brett Cohen’s free seminar at the Memorial Weight-Loss Surgery Program.”

Steve BEFORE & AFTER

Memorial Regional Hospital’s distinction as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence helped confirm his decision—since programs must meet high standards of quality, safety and surgical expertise to earn this seal. Steve’s sleeve gastrectomy was a minimally invasive, laparoscopic procedure. Combined with pre- and post-surgery counseling and support groups, it has helped him lose 270 pounds. He now enjoys a healthy, energetic lifestyle, and all the things he missed. You don’t have to do it alone. Memorial’s Weight-Loss Surgery Program helped Steve start a new life. You can, too. Learn more at a free seminar. Visit MHS.net/WeightLoss or call 954-265-5889.

“If you’ve tried and tried to lose weight with no success, weight-loss surgery can help you achieve long-term results. We can help you have the life you deserve.” – Brett Cohen, MD, FACS

City of Hollywood agrees to contract with Police officers

pet of the

By David Volz Correspondent

Kingsley

Kingsley was welcomed to our family when he just 2 ½ months old, he was only 4 lbs and the cutest little puppy ever. We were very lucky to get a loving, affectionate, smart and playful dog. He is always full of excitement and curiosity. He loves eating mommy and daddy’s shoes and socks but he is learning right from wrong and getting better every day. As his parents, we couldn’t be any happier with Kingsley.

The City of Hollywood offered its police officers pay increases over the next two years. Officers will receive a 13.7 percent increase, sergeants will see an 11.7 percent increase, and lieutenants will receive an 11.8 percent increase. The overall average increase for each officer is 13.35 percent. Individual circumstances may vary. The contract between the Police Benevolent Association, the union that

represents the City’s officers and the City was finalized during a commission meeting on July 17. The City of Hollywood had a very difficult financial situation that culminated in FY 2011. This resulted in pay cuts and benefit reductions for many city personnel including police officers. The City’s financial circumstances became so dire that it went into Financial Urgency. This allows a City to look at labor contracts and make adjustments. “Now the economy has improved and the City has undertaken a number of

measures to begin restoring benefits and salaries to personnel,” said Raelin Storey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. The City approved pay increases for the Fire Department during a Commission meeting on July 3. Firefighters are represented the International Association of Firefighters. The average pay increase for the City’s firefighters is 13.98 percent. The City of Hollywood has not reached an agreement with the American Federation and State, County and Municipal Employees.

AUGUST 2013

In the United States, more than one out of five children lives in a household with food insecurity, which means they do not always know where they will find their next meal. A critical component to a healthy life is nutrition. Liberia Economic & Social Development, Inc (LES) is a non profit community economic development organization located in the Liberia community of Hollywood. Although housing is the focus of the organization, the need for social service and food assistance has increased over the years. “We served 675 families in June, 712 in May and 684 in April at the food pantry,” recalls community activist Marty Jacobsen who has been a LES board member for the last three years and volunteer for over six years. “We service approximately 500 families a month. Each family can come up to twice a week. They receive bread, meat, rice beans and canned goods.” “Families from Dade and Broward Counties walk into our doors daily, LES realizes that right now, many of these residents are struggling with hunger,” explains Henry L. Graham, Executive Director of LES. “They are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals, or even days.” Within the past several years, LES has become the local agency to meet their food security needs.

Besides Hollywood residents, Dania Beach is the next highest number of families coming to receive services. Since January 2013, LES have received over 3,350 families to receive food. With financial and food contributions from the community and organizations like Memorial Healthcare, and J M Family Enterprise, Inc., LES is one of the only pantries in South Florida that is open more than one day a week. LES is currently in need of a large, freezer chest in addition to food and clothing to assist local residents. Located at 2334 Greene Street in Hollywood, Florida, the LES Food Pantry is open to clients Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. If you are interested in donating food or clothing to LES, or for more information, call (954) 924-3636 or visit their website at: www.lesinc. us.

FEATURE STORY

Local volunteers to shave their heads to support childhood cancer research St. Baldrick’s Foundation event to raise money for lifesaving research The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at Mickey Byrnes Irish Pub for the fifth year in a row on September 21st, where more than 100 people will shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to conquer childhood cancers. Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle

against this devastating disease. Besides the head shaving, a silent auction and a raffle will be a feature at the event. Some of the auction prizes this year include an autographed Dwyane Wade jersey, autographed Dan Marino limited edition lithograph, golf outings to some of South Florida’s exclusive golf courses and more. Raffle items include gift certificates to South Florida’s top restaurants, a new bicycle, and stays at local resorts just to name a few. At our 2012 event, 56 volunteers and shavees raised over $48,000. Every year the event honors a local child battling cancer. This year’s honoree is Lauren Bendesky. Lauren is a sixteen year-old girl who was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma in the summer of 2012. “I hope to use this experience to be a role model to other teenagers faced with this difficult journey,” said Lauren. “My main goal is not only to inspire children younger than me battling cancer and struggling to win but also adults much older than me not even facing cancer.” There is still time sign up to

participate as a shavee, volunteer, or to donate silent auction and raffle items. Contact Christopher Haggerty at (954) 536-9515 or email chrishags44@aol.com. For more information about this year’s at Mickey Byrne’s event or to make a donation, visit www.GetBaldAtMickeys. com ABOUT THE ST. BALDRICK’S FOUNDATION

Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $103 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials. SCHOOL NEWS

State releases 2012/13 elementary and middle school grades The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) recently released elementary and middle school grades for the 2012/13 school year. Consistent with school districts across the state, Broward County Public

Schools (BCPS) elementary and middle school grades have declined. Despite the decline in school grades caused by the numerous, inconsistent and nuanced changes by the state to the school grading system, student

performance data shows BCPS students performed slightly better or as well as last year. BCPS adopted a three-year strategic plan focused on ensuring all students are learning toward

Hollywood resident Ellen Condon honored by Broward Center for the Performing Arts

Since the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the School Board of Broward County created the nationally award-winning SEAS program of educational performances in 1991, the program has presented the equivalent of one performance a day for more than 12 years and the volunteers who usher at daytime educational performances have donated more than 158,500 hours. The Broward Center recently honored the local volunteers for the contributions to the daytime theater performances which integrate the arts with the core school curriculum. “Our education programs such as the free SEAS performances and the affordably priced Smart Stage Matinee weekday performances have served more than 2.6 million students and the coming season will see the opening of the Rose Miniaci Arts Education Center which will create more opportunities to deepen the learning experience,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley. “We value our dedicated volunteers who share our vision of strengthening our community through the arts.” The Broward Center showed its appreciation to 60 volunteers who devote their time to the educational performances at an event held in the Abdo New River Room. Weston resident Betty Politte was named as the 2012-2013 “SEAS/Smart Stage Volunteer of the Year.” A volunteer for threeand-a-half years, she volunteered 206 hours this season with 66 dedicated to SEAS and

THE LIGHTER SIDE

HAPPENINGS

The secret to enviable abs A toned, lean stomach is the ultimate sign of a fitness plan that’s working. It’s also one of the hardest things to achieve. Shondelle Solomon-Miles Maybe you’ve given up on your abs after doing thousands of crunches only to see zero results. I honestly don’t blame you. It’s time that you forget everything you’ve heard about how to sculpt your abs. The truth is that crunches simply won’t give you a six-pack. Ever. Doing crunches with the hope that it will turn your midsection into a washboard is to operate under the most widely held fitness myth. I’m talking about the spot reducing myth. Here’s the truth: training one area of your body will not specifically burn fat from that area. Even those who have heard that spot reducing is a myth often still train as if it is true. So here’s the hard truth that you need to face: Doing crunches will not magically make your tummy shrink, it will not cause your muffin top to melt away, and it will not give you washboard abs. Only a reduction in body fat will do that for you. So want the secret to great abs? The secret to great abs is a combination of fat burning cardio, resistance training, and clean eating. It is very possible for you to dramatically shape up your waistline before the holidays arrive. Yes, I’m talking to Y-OU. Weight loss is not reserved only for the people you see on the Biggest Loser or on exercise equipment infomercials. You can do it too. So is your current routine getting you closer to that six-pack, or have you simply been burning time? Answer the following two questions to find out... How many times per week do you exercise? If you answered with anything less than 4 times a week then that’s the first thing getting between you and streamline abs. What is a fat burning workout? A routine that incorporates intense cardiovascular training with challenging resistance training. Does this describe what you do?

20

AUGUST 2013

I’m sorry to be the one to break this to you, but walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes at a comfortable pace isn’t a fat blasting routine. Neither is a leisurely, not-a-drop-of-sweat 20 minutes on the elliptical machine. The truth is that exercising smart allows you to dramatically increase your results while spending less time in the gym. Cardio exercise is most beneficial when done at an effective level of intensity. This doesn’t mean that you should be out gasping for air. It does mean that you need to dig down and push yourself. Every time. Resistance training is the second vital part to a workout that burns fat. This means working your major muscle groups against resistance in a way that challenges you and stimulates your metabolism. The key here is to find the right intensity and to keep each muscle group guessing. Do you eat clean? Diet is the number one reason that most people don’t have great abs. If your diet is out of control then your abs will be too. To trim your waist, start by trimming the junk out of your diet, regardless of how hard you exercise. Now you know why simply doing crunches will not get you the abs of your dreams. While it is important to exercise your abs a couple of times a week, don’t expect fat to fall of that area after thousands of crunches. If you seriously want to flatten and sculpt your waist in time for the holidays then all you have to do is decide that you really want it. Commit to yourself. You deserve it. Come see me for fat blasting workouts that deliver the results you want. Together we will get you on a program that will melt the fat off your abs, exposing shape and definition-with visible results before Christmas. Call or email me today for a no obligation consultation. I’m here to propel you towards your fitness and fat loss goals. Let’s get you started on a fitness program that will get you on the fast track to your best abs ever.

M FAMILY FEATURES

aking dishes worthy of a choice restaurant menu doesn’t mean spending hours in the kitchen. It’s more about choosing topdrawer ingredients — and here are a few you can pick up in the deli department. They’re all members of an elite club of authentic foods made according to traditional methods and are certified PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) by the European Union. n Grana Padano, a cheese made only in the Padana Valley in Northern Italy, is terrific for easy but sophisticated dishes. n Prosciutto di San Daniele is a special ham, produced in San Daniele del Friuli, in the Northeast of Italy, and like all PDO products, it must pass the strictest inspection. n Parmigiano Reggiano, renowned for its complex flavor, is made exclusively in Parma, Reggio Emilia and three other neighboring Italian provinces. n Prosciutto di Parma, a delicately flavored, all-natural ham, is produced in the gently rolling hills near Parma. With legendary European foods, it’s easy to make restaurant-quality dishes like these. For more serving ideas and information about the PDO system, visit www.legendsfromeurope.com.

Introducing Montasio Cheese

Montasio, with a savory, wellbalanced flavor, is new to many Americans, but its origins can be traced back to a 17th-century monastery. To this day, it is made only in northern Italy’s Friuli Venezia Giulia and East Veneto and has earned membership in Europe’s “hall of fame” as a PDO product. Young semi-soft Montasio is terrific on a cheese platter or on sandwiches. Aged Montasio can be grated for pasta, risotto and other dishes.

Asparagus, Orange and Prosciutto di San Daniele Salad

Yield: 6 portions 1 pound asparagus, trimmed 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon orange juice 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 8 slices Prosciutto di San Daniele (4 ounces), halved lengthwise 2 navel oranges, peeled and segmented 1/4 cup pine nuts, toasted In salted water, cook asparagus until tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Rinse with cold water; pat dry. In small bowl, whisk olive oil, orange juice, vinegar, salt and pepper. Divide asparagus on salad plates and drizzle with dressing. Arrange Prosciutto di San Daniele and orange segments over asparagus; sprinkle with pine nuts.

Ziti with Roasted Cauliflower, Prosciutto di Parma and Toasted Breadcrumbs Yield: 4 portions 2 slices country-style bread, crusts removed, torn into pieces 1/3 cup olive oil, divided 1 large cauliflower (2 1/2 pounds), trimmed and chopped 1/4 teaspoon salt 8 slices Prosciutto di Parma (4 ounces), cut into 1-inch squares, divided 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped 8 ounces dry ziti, cooked and drained, reserving 1 cup pasta water 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley 1/4 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes, or to taste Preheat oven to 425°F. In food processor, pulse bread to form crumbs. In shallow pan, mix breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon olive oil; toast until golden, stirring once, about 5 minutes. In large baking pan, mix cauliflower with 3 tablespoons olive oil and salt. Roast until browned, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes. In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil; add half prosciutto and cook until crisp. Stir in garlic; cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in pasta, cauliflower and wine. Stir well, adding pasta water as needed for a saucy consistency. Stir in parsley and hot pepper flakes. Spoon into shallow bowls; top with remaining Prosciutto di Parma and breadcrumbs. Garnish with additional Prosciutto di Parma slices, if desired.

Parmigiano Reggiano-Spinach Puffs

Yield: about 3 dozen 4 cups baby spinach (6 ounces), cooked, cooled 3/4 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 3/4 cup milk 5 tablespoons butter 3 large eggs, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups (6 ounces) coarsely grated Parmigiano Reggiano Preheat oven to 400ºF. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Wrap spinach in a towel, squeeze until dry; chop fine. In small bowl, mix flour, salt and cayenne. In medium saucepan, bring milk and butter to a boil. Remove from heat and add flour mixture; with wooden spoon, beat until it thickens and pulls away from sides, about 1 minute. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating well until incorporated. Stir in spinach and cheese. Drop rounded spoonfuls onto prepared baking sheets, spacing 1 inch apart. Bake until golden, 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm. (Puffs can be held at room temperature up to 1 day or frozen; reheat in 400ºF oven, 3 to 5 minutes.)

Bruschetta with Skillet-Seared Mushrooms and Grana Padano

Yield: 4 portions 4 slices country-style bread 4 ounces Grana Padano, coarsely grated 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 pound crimini mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 small red bell pepper, cut in 1/2-inch pieces 2 cloves garlic, cut in slivers 2 teaspoons flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup half-and-half Preheat oven to 400°F. On baking sheet, toast bread until crisp, about 10 minutes. Scatter one-third of the Grana Padano over toast. In large skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil; add mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they give off liquid, about 5 minutes. Stir in bell pepper and garlic; cook until tender, about 5 minutes. Reduce heat. Stir in flour, salt and pepper; cook, stirring, 2 minutes; add half-and-half and simmer until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Divide over bruschetta and top with remaining Grana Padano.

HURRICANE PREP

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30th June 1 marked the beginning of hurricane season. Prepare early for what may possibly be an active weather season. Trim your trees and shrubs well before a storm threatens. All tree trimming and yard cleaning should be complete BEFORE a hurricane or tropical storm watch is issued. A watch means a storm could be imminent within 36 hours, and it is too

late to trim your trees at that time. If you have a special medical need, you are strongly encouraged to register for Broward County’s Special Needs Shelter. Registration should be in advance, before a storm threatens. To register for a Special Needs Shelter and/or transportation to the shelter, call Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services Division at (954) 537.2888 or TTY (954) 831.3940.
