Flocks of pink Free pet photos with Santa at flamingos invade Hollywood Animal Hospital Hollywood Lawns from Dec. 2-16 Would you like a photo of your precious pooch or fierce feline with Santa Claus? Then come out to Hollywood Animal Hospital on Saturday, December 14. The big bearded one will be ready to pose with your furry baby.

Flocks of pink flamingos will soon be invading lawns throughout Hollywood. If you see a flock of flamingo’s on someone’s lawn, it’s a fund raiser for the Hollywood Women’s Club. Running from December 2nd to December 16 or longer, anyone can call the Flocking Hotline and Flock your neighbor or a friend. The birds will show up with a note that explains “Our group is working hard to raise funds for our charitable cause. We understand that times are tough and that you may not be able to donate at this time, but we hope that you’ve enjoyed this surprise flocking and appreciate the spirit and good will with which it was intended.” To have the birds removed, a donation is requested and you can donate to have someone flocked. The Flocking Hotline is 954-404-7410. Volunteers from the club will flock homes in the early morning hours and de-flock in the evening. The Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), Hollywood Women’s Club, founded in 1922, is one of the City of Hollywood’s oldest civic groups. The culturally diverse organization of 100 members is dedicated to community service and the support of local and international charitable organizations. Their Clubhouse functions as a center for community, social, educational and fund raising events and has nearly completed restorations of its foundation and other critical issues. Johnson Street Business district works to improve western section of Hollywood By David Volz | Correspondent The Johnson Street Business District is working to improve the environment for small businesses in Hollywood especially in the district between 441 and 56th Avenue. The Business District was incorporated and elected its officers in October. This District was formed by a group of 17 small business owners who were dissatisfied with the appearance of the four city blocks of the business district from 56th Avenue west to 441. Each participating business is expected to contibute $500 to be a part of the District. The organization anticipates a greater number of member businesses. “We picked the Johnson Street corridor. We did a survey of the streets, took pictures of every business and got the names of the business owners, the owners of the property and started to approach each and every one of them,” said Melville Pollak. He is the treasurer of the Council of Civic Associations which had undertaken the project of the economic development of small businesses. Pollack credited Idelma Quintana, the president of the Hollywood Gardens West Homeowners Association for her work to make the District a reality. At first the Business District encountered a strong negative reaction. Small business owners believed the City of Hollywood had neglected them and made promises that were never fulfilled. Improvements had not been made to sidewalks and street lamps had been neglected. They believed that code enforcement was too lax and allowed properties to decline and bring the entire area down in value. Members of the District persevered. They were able to encourage business owners to make inexpensive upgrades to their properties. Organization members went to the City administration and were greeted with open arms by City Manager Cathy Rivenbark and Davonne Barbour, director of business development for Hollywood. “She saw us as an opportunity to make this a model redevelopment area,” said Pollak. “She helped us get a $10,000 grant that we were able to match with other grants and make improvements like painting and planting. About six businesses utilized that money to upgrade the appearance of their properties. Others made improvements on their own.” More meetings were held and some

of the small business owners realized that more money and support was needed. “We convinced the more established businesses to make improvements to their facilities. The results started to snowball and more businesses started to come to the area,” said Pollak. Now the Business District has partnered with the City of Hollywood and has made presentations to city leaders. More people are getting involved in the organization. Advertising logos have been established which will clearly define member businesses. Other enhancements will include new sidewalks in the District area and improved street lighting and updated bus benches. Eventually the goal is to have a giant street fair to be known as the International Music, Food and Art Festival on March 16 of 2014. There is an initial budget of $10,000 for this event. “The City has waived normal expenses and the businesses are going after sponsors to make this event a success,” said Pollak. “It will have at least three live bands, a master tent for events. Each one of the businesses that are part of the District will put up a tent and put their services or wares on display and there will be specific times for the demonstrations. We will have dancers, face painting, bounce house and entertainment for people of all ages. Food will be available from all different venues and countries,” said Pollak. “I have been in business here for 37 years and I think it is a small gem for the City of Hollywood. There are so many great small businesses here and I just think our business district is well worth the travel to some and see us,” said Debra Torchia, owner of Joan’s Florist. Karen Donald, the owner Donald Auto Repair loves the idea of the District. “I think it is a good way to let the community know we are a solid stretch of independent businesses that are here to serve the community. We offer services that you wouldn’t find in other areas. It is a good place to shop. You can walk down the street, get your car repaired, buy some flowers and get a piece of pizza and then come back and pick up your car,” said Donald. Ugly Christmas Sweater Party to benefit Gilda’s Club set for Dec. 12

WHAT: Mickey’s 2nd Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party benefiting Gilda’s Club South Florida

Ericka Koenig Engelfried may have turned 104 years of age on November 22, 2013 but that is not slowing her down. As a child she studied piano in Germany and she is still playing the piano from memory for her friends at the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center/ Southeast Focal Point. Born in 1909 in Neumünster, Germany, she studied at Kiel Conservatory of Music as a youngster. She moved to New York City in 1923 with her mother to join her father who had already emigrated to the United States ahead of his wife and daughter. She continued her musical studies and even played in Carnegie Hall with a group as a teenager. She studied hairdressing in order to earn a living during the depression. In 1937 she married George Englefried and they were married for 52 years. Mrs. Engelfried’s son, Rolf, is a pilot who lives in the Fort Lauderdale

area. Mrs. Engelfried still owns her own home in Hollywood. As a participant at the Adult Care Program at the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center, Mrs. Engelfried enjoys pet therapy, all of the music programs, exercise classes and being with the “younger folks” who are in their 80’s and 90’s! A 104th Birthday party was celebrated with her peers at the center on Friday, November 22 at noon. The Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center/Southeast Focal Point is a 501(c )(3) charitable organization that administers the programs with Federal Older American Act Funds and State General Revenue Funds through the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Aging and Disability Resource Center/Area Agency on Aging of Broward County. Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like an ugly Christmas sweater. On December 12th the community is invited to flaunt the ugliest festive frocks they can find to celebrate the holidays at Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub in Hollywood. The party will include an open bar, music, raffles, and prizes for the ugliest Christmas sweater. Admission for this festive evening is a $10 donation to Gilda’s Club South Florida. All proceeds support Gilda’s Club South Florida programs for men, women, and children who have been affected by cancer. “Community partnerships enable us to keep our support programs and workshops available to our members free of charge,” shared Shelley Goren, Gilda’s Club South Florida CEO. “We’re so grateful to our friends at Mickey Byrne’s for hosting this annual event in support of our mission.”

Donate your gently used toys for local kids

Liberia Economic and Social Development (LES) is a 501c 3 that has been building low to moderate income housing in Hollywood Florida for over 30 years. The organization has built over 200 houses and developed over 100 apartment units in conjunction with the city of Hollywood, Broward county and Department of House and urban development. They also run a food bank that distributes food each month to over 400 needy families in Hollywood and Dania Beach. Their social services center offers a variety of assistance programs. They provide a computer with internet access to sign up for unemployment, SNAP (food stamps) Medicare and Medicaid and assist them in navigating the whole process. Additionally, LES runs a youth training program that prepares young people in the Liberia neighborhood for employment. Each year Board member Marty Jacobsen runs a gently used toy drive to serve the holiday needs of over 800 kids of families that use the community pantry as well as the children at the moderate income daycare centers in Liberia. “You should see the joy in the children’s faces when Santa shows up on a Hollywood fire-truck to deliver the toys,” said Jacobsen. “Last year my 4 year old granddaughter assisted us. Donations of pet food made by Dec. 14 will be matched by Hollywood Animal Hospital for home-bound seniors Hollywood Animal Hospital (HAH) is teaming up with Broward Meals on Wheels (BMOW) to gather food for pets of homebound seniors throughout Broward County. Last year the community donated 1,000 pounds of food that was matched by the HAH and HAH partners, Purina and Hills pet food companies for a total of 2,000 pounds of food donations. Donations of canned and dry foods for cats and dogs made by December 14, 2013 will be matched pound for pound by HAH. BMOW delivers pet food once a month to homebound seniors who need assistance taking care of their in-home

pets. Pet food is provided through the generosity of community donations. Just stop by Hollyood Animal Hospital with a donation of canned, dry or dehydrated food for cats or dogs. This year cat food is strongly needed due to the needs of BMOW participants. Chicago restaurateur opens Fascino’s authentic Italian eatery in Downtown Hollywood

By Caron Conway Lead Correspondent Fascino’s, a new Italian restaurant in Downtown Hollywood, is following the awardwinning recipe of Chicago’s popular Viaggio eateries by offering delicious authentic Italian cuisine prepared by Viaggio’s former chefs and under the direction of successful Windy City restaurateur Sam Villardito. Villardito, who introduced the Viaggio brand to Chicagoans in 2007 and sold both locations last June, opened Fascino’s on October 2 at 1900 Harrison St., the former site of Fulvio’s 1900 Italian restaurant. Villardito said patrons’ response to Fascino’s has been extremely favorable. “Everybody loves the food,” he said. “We use the best ingredients known to mankind, including top-of-the-line Allen Brothers meats and extra-extra virgin olive oil.” Villardito, who was a snowbird for 20 years with a residence in Bal Harbour, moved to South Florida permanently in December 2012. “I was bored. I had nothing to do,” he recalled. And then Villardito heard that local restaurateur Fulvio Sardelli was closing his namesake restaurant and selling the

2,400-square-foot building at the corner of Harrison Street and 19th Avenue. “I thought, ‘Why not give Florida a chance?’” said Villardito, who signed the lease Sept. 17 and brought in former Viaggio chefs and other staff from Chicago to help launch Fascino’s. Fascino is the Italian word for “fascination” or “charm,” and Fascino’s lives up to its name, for this is not your typical neighborhood Italian eatery. Like Viaggio Ristorante, which was voted the best Italian restaurant in Chicago three years running, Fascino’s prides itself on its “sultry and savory” dishes, served up at reasonable prices in an ambience that exudes class. Fascino’s extensive menu features steak, veal, lamb, chicken and fish entrées, as well as a variety of pastas and sauces, including gluten-free offerings. “We’ll make anything for anybody,” Villardito stressed. Among the standout appetizers is Meatballs with Romaine Salad. “In my opinion, we have the best meatballs in the country, and I’ve had people tell me that,” Villardito said. He chose Downtown Hollywood as the location for his latest culinary venture because of what the historic arts, music and

entertainment district has to offer, both now and in the future. “It reminds me of a diverse downtown area in Chicago called Bucktown,” Villardito said. “It seems to me that the City of Hollywood is really trying to upgrade the neighborhood, and getting in on the ground floor with that upgrade can only enhance our

Downtown Hollywood Dream Car Classic to feature ‘My Classic Car’s’ Dennis Gage SPEED Channel celebrity announced as special guest at popular free monthly event on Jan. 5 By Caron Conway Lead Correspondent Dennis Gage, the host of SPEED Channel’s My Classic Car, will be the celebrity special guest for the Downtown Hollywood Dream Car Classic on Sun., Jan. 5, featuring dozens of vintage and custom vehicles on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. along Hollywood Boulevard between 19th Avenue and Dixie Highway. Gage will be on hand for autographs and photos with car show entrants and their rides. Entertainment will be provided by the deejay duo of DJ Rockin’ Rich Bedford and 101.5 LITE FM radio personality Julie Guy. Trophies will be awarded to the top entries, and door prizes will include a NASCAR jacket and other auto-related items. Car show participants also will receive food and beverage discounts at select downtown restaurants. Car show promoter Joe Bevelacqua of Cobra Joe Productions said the special

appearance by Gage, whose popular program is now in production for its 18th season, is an exciting addition to the Dream Car Classic, which takes place the first Sunday of the month through May. “Dennis Gage’s knowledge of classic cars and his following from his SPEED Channel show My Classic Cars will bring excitement to the Dream Car Classic and give car show participants a chance to talk and have photos taken with him,” Bevelacqua said. “This is just another slice of excitement Cobra Joe Productions is trying to bring to classic car show events.” My Classic Car captures America’s love affair with the automobile. After only six months on the air as a weekly series on TNN, Gage was selected by The Cable Guide and Total Television as one of the “Hot Faces of Cable” for 1997. In 2000 the show moved to SPEED Channel, where it became one of the highest-rated programs on the network. My Classic Car is carried on both Velocity and MAVTV networks, reaching nearly 90 million households. Gage also is the executive producer of the motorcycle television programs Corbin’s Ride On and Trippin’ on Two Wheels, the reality series Texas Hardtails and the independent film Novem. The multitalented Gage has a background as a pedal steel guitar player

who opened for Charlie Daniels, Waylon Jennings and Dr. Hook, and is a former product development scientist with Procter & Gamble who holds a Ph.D. in chemistry and a number of patents on P&G products. Gage, whose lifelong love of cars and motorcycles was sparked as a youth on his family’s small farm in northwestern Illinois, calls hosting My Classic Car “the ultimate job.” The Downtown Hollywood Dream Car Classic, a longtime popular event that returned in September after more than a yearlong absence, is open to all clubs, vintage and custom cars, trucks and motorcycles and is free for spectators. The event, which is presented by the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), is an open show, meaning vehicles of all years may enter. The car show entrance is at 20th Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard. Gates open at 8 a.m. The registration fee is $20. Car show spaces are limited and can be reserved and prepaid at the next Dream Car Classic on Sunday, December 1. Vehicles also will be registered the morning of the show as space permits. Dog therapy integrated into each hospital of Memorial Healthcare System By Caron Conway Lead Correspondent

The therapeutic benefits of having a furry family member have long been recognized, but Memorial Healthcare System has expanded on the concept in a far-reaching way through its groundbreaking hospitaloperated and -funded dog therapy program at each of its six hospital facilities in Broward County. The program, which takes a holistic approach to healing the mind and spirit as well as the body, started in 2009 at Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood with the introduction of Liz, a specially trained Golden Retriever provided by East Coast Assistance Dogs (ECAD). The program proved so successful that additional Goldens – Compass, Lily, Nutmeg and Pumpkin – were added to the pet therapy program, which became complete with the addition of Allen in September 2012 at Memorial Hospital Pembroke in Pembroke Pines. Dog therapy has been shown to reduce healing time, lower blood pressure and heart rate, stave off anxiety, depression and loneliness, and help patients forget their pain. The dogs also provide patients who are missing their own pet with “a little piece of home,” said Katelynn Torres, a certified Child Life Specialist who oversees the pet therapy program featuring Nutmeg at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood along with co-worker Christina Becker. The dogs not only provide attention and affection – they are trained to snuggle on command – but also assist with patient rehabilitation. Pet therapy benefits patients recovering from heart attack, strokes, accidents and surgery, providing physical therapy, occupational

therapy and speech therapy. Patients can give the dogs various commands (they can open a closet door and fetch shoes, for example), take them for a walk or throw a ball to them, among other tasks. Torres said reading a story to a therapy dog gives patients confidence because they’re not being judged and is more like a fun activity than a task. “[The therapy] tricks patients because they don’t realize they’re doing rehab,” Torres said. “And dogs are naturally fun.” The therapy dogs will even ride on the gurney with an anxious patient heading into surgery. Nutmeg spends most mornings in Joe DiMaggio’s pre-op area. She works from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with regular breaks that include meals, snacks, naptime in a waterbed in Torres’ office and plenty of play time. “Dogs absorb the stress of other people, so we play ball with her at least twice a day,” Torres said. Each therapy dog has several handlers, all salaried Memorial employees who are specially trained at a weeklong boot camp, including a designated home handler that each dog lives with when off-duty. The six dogs are hospital celebrities who have their own Facebook page and a Bark Line voicemail system for patients and doctors to request a visit.

Torres said young patients are so enamored of “anything having to do with Nutmeg” that they often tape her photograph beside their bed or keep it under their pillow while they sleep. “When I have Nutmeg, I don’t exist. Everywhere we go, people want to pet her and take pictures with her,” Torres said. “She has the best job ever. She gets petted and spoiled all the time.” Memorial also offers a Pet Visitation Program with dogs and their volunteer owners who have both gone through a certification process. Krop High School. Under the direction of art instructors Mirtha Funcia, William Kidd, Ernesto Montes, and Julie Shakher, this collection includes drawing, painting, photography and ceramics. The exhibition will feature work from students ages 14 to 18, including an assortment of exploratory ventures, which seek to challenge traditional modes of creative expression through the use of mixed media. “SOUP” exemplifies a group effort between teachers and students to curate an exhibition that is both profound and sophisticated while showcasing the many strengths

New condominium project H3 coming to Hollywood

The City of Hollywood will be getting a new residential condominium building, the first to be built in the area for a long time. It will be known as H3 at Hollywood Station and is expected to be complete by late 2015. It will be located just west of Dixie Highway. “This condominium is in a position to be in a great location, especially if the passenger rail comes through here and has to stop in Hollywood,” said Manuel Pila, program manager for the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency. “This is one of the locations that is being strongly considered for an FEC railway stop. The condominium will be close to downtown and I-95, Tri-Rail and commuter rail. There is nothing like this around.” H3 will have 15 floors. It will include 247 units of studios, one, two and three bedroom homes. Units will be available from 600 square feet to 1,600 square feet. They will be priced from $190,000 to $380,000. It will be a $50

It will bring a whole lot more people into the area who will go out and use services. They will eat in restaurants and shop in stores,” said Pila. The fact that this project is being built is a good sign for the Hollywood economy. It shows that business is coming to Hollywood that the City is place where people want to be, according to Pila.

Before more than 450 cheering students, colleagues and dignitaries, Milken Family Foundation Co-Founder Mike Milken and State Education Commissioner Pam Stewart presented Espinosa with the award on November 25. Mr. Espinosa leads the Aeronautics STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) magnet program and the LEEO (Linking Education and Employment Opportunities) progam at the school. He thought he was attending a schoolwide celebration featuring a visit by the Commissioner to recognize the achievements of those two programs. Instead, he quickly became the focus of attention as Mr. Milken announced he was there to give out the foundation's prestigious Milken Educator Award. "This prestigious award represents an incredible accomplishment for Mr. Espinosa and is a testament to his dedication to students," said Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. "Not only is he a role model fro teachers in Broward County, but also across the country."

Free Shuttles to transport residents to candy cane parade Dec. 7 Celebrating 58 years, the Candy Cane Parade returns to the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk December 7 at 7:00 p.m. This year’s parade theme is “Destination Illumination,” and it will surely light up the Broadwalk with holiday colors and festivities! The parade begins on the Broadwalk at Scott Street and heads south to Harrison Street. Festive floats, marching bands and creative displays from civic, non-profit and children’s groups all come together with the City to put on this hometown holiday celebration. Complimentary bleacher seating will be set up on the sand along the parade route from Scott Street to Tyler Street with parade announcers stationed across from Charnow Park at Garfield Street and at the Hollywood Beach Theatre at Johnson Street. Spectators also may bring a blanket or lawn chair for top-notch viewing along the parade route or reserve a table at one of the many seaside restaurants for a complete beachfront experience. To ease traffic, the City encourages parade-goers to park in one of the downtown parking garages and take the free patron shuttles to the beach from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The parking garages are located at 19th Avenue at Polk Street and 20th Avenue at Van Buren Street. Prevailing downtown parking rates apply. You can also jump aboard the Hollywood Trolley which travels from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. with convenient stops downtown and along the beach for $1 per person, per trip. The Candy Cane Parade is presented in partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency.
