FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Hollywood heroes to shave heads for childhood cancer By Jennifer Sandomir In partnership with Mickey Byrne’s, Hollywood Gazette recently reached out to candidates running in the Hollywood’s 2012 municipal election and urged them to participate in the annual St. Baldrick’s event to be held September 15 at 4 p.m. Each year, Mark Rowe, owner of Mickey Byrne’s in Downtown Hollywood organizes and hosts the event which has raised over $60,000 for childhood cancer since 2009. At the time of press only one candidate has stepped up and pledged to be a ‘‘shavee.’’ Hollywood Serian will be shaving his head District 4 candidate Sept. 15 at Mickey Justin Serian will be Byrne’s among dozens of local heroes who are bravely buzzing their heads for the cause. Heidi O’Sheehan (District 3), Freddy M. Suastegui (District 6) and Kevin Beiderman (District 5) have declined to be shavees but will participate in other ways. Past shavees have included Hollywood CRA Redevelopment/Enhanced Services Manager Lisa Liotta. In addition, this year Hollywood Gazette has formed a team to honor the life of Hollywood resident Madelyn Grace Bougard, who was a student at Florida Intercultural Academy, and kids like her who are fighting cancer. On May 6th, 2010 Madelyn’s parents took her to Joe Dimaggio Children’s Hospital due to a severe recurrent headaches. Physicians diagnosed a inoperable brain stem tumor (diffuse pontine glioma) with hydrocephalus (fluid build-up). On May 9th, 2010 she was transfered to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee where the family spent the early summer. The family returned to Hollywood in June 2010. On November 26, 2011, Madelyn passed away. Her mother shares, “Since her diagnosis I have repeatedly heard Madelyn referred to as an “angel.” When she was alive, Madelyn was many things, but she was no angel. Maddy was intelligent, loving, beautiful, sweet, and challenging …a very real girl. We’re going to miss her every day we live, every day until we get to see her again, but when her suffering ended, so did ours. Maddy’s dancing again. She is celebrating in heaven, and we are celebrating with her. Now she is an angel.” Her father’s eulogy shares a glimpse of life with Maddy, “For such a girlie girl, her athleticism was impressive. By the time she was six she could hit a softball pitch. There wasn’t going to be tee ball in her future in any case. Gymnastics-- she would climb the rope to the ceiling of the gym. She swam a perfect butterfly stroke. When she and I played in the pool, she

She would stand up on my shoulders with no hands and yell, ‘LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, IT’S THE CIRCUS!’ Then, she would do a great dive.” The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. This year’s goal is to raise $15,000 at the Mickey Byrne’s event. “Join this St. Baldrick’s event, and whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer, or donate, we hope you’ll be a part of the excitement,” says Rowe. St. Baldrick’s research grants help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions that treat children with cancer. Grant funds have been distributed to more than 230 facilities for laboratory research and to help make clinical trials Event Date: available to more Sept. 15, 2012 youngsters. Party with a Purpose (PWP) is a monthly networker/fundraiser sponsored by the Hollywood Gazette and hosted at venues located at the Seminole Paradise. Each month local community leaders gather to network and support a different local non-profit. June’s Party with a Purpose benefited the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood presents contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances, and high-quality education programs for adults and children. The event raised seven hundred and eighty dollars through admission fees and raffle ticket sales. Bongo’s Cuban Cafe generously served an abundance of appetizers and attendees enjoyed the cocktail specials. Additionally, entertainment was provided by Scott Evans of Scott Evans Productions. The next PWP is on Thursday, July 19 at Bluepoint Ocean Grill to benefit Gilda’s Club of South Florida. 100% of the $10 admission fee is donated to the organization. All are welcome! -T.C. Meet Hollywood’s District 4 Candidates

In April 2012, the Hollywood Gazette began giving City Commission candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community in advance of the November 6 election. Each month will feature candidates from one district, followed by mayoral candidates. This month, District 4 candidates are featured. Make sure to check out the August issue for District 5 candidates. Previous candidate profiles can be found at www.hollywoodgazette.com under ‘archives.’ - J.S.

Richard Blattner What you should know about me: Born in Lima, Ohio. Graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Served in the US Army. Married to Bunny Blattner, who recently retired from the University School after 35 years. Two sons, David and Billy, and four grandchildren. We also consider Bobby Huen and his sister Barbara our children as well. Barbara and husband Jonathon have two children, Olivia and Violet and live in Houston. Elected to Hollywood Commission in 2007 to complete the balance of a term, and re-elected in 2008 to a full four year term. Chair of the YMCA of Broward County; Chair of the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization; member of the Broward Water Resources Advisory Board; represent Hollywood on the Broward County Enterprise Advisory Committee; volunteer at the Broward Outreach Committee. Member of Temple Solel. What will I do for you: I consider this a full time job, and my extra curricular activities (above) are an important way to be an advocate for the city, and to establish my leadership throughout Broward County. As such, I will continue to work hard for all the citizens of Hollywood. While we are elected from single member districts, I have always felt

that my responsibilities do not end at the District borders. While the official job description is that commissioners serve as both the legislative and judicial arms of the city, those functions are basically performed at public meetings. What happens between those is what is really important to me. And that is: responding to the concerns of residents regardless of where they live. When residents reach out to elected officials, it is often because they didn’t know where to turn, or were not satisfied with the answers they were given by staff and the system. I pride myself on understanding how the system works; who the problem solvers/players are; and how to get answers. It is very satisfying when I am able to provide the answers or solutions residents request. By the way, this sometimes requires going outside the city for answers; School Board, the County, Department of Transportation, etc. After a while, you get a reputation as a broker who is fair and honest, and has the interest of the residents and his city uppermost in his mind. I am proud of that. People often refer to me as the Voice of Reason on the Commission. That means I am well prepared, thoughtful, progressive, fair and honest. What a nice reputation to have.

Justin Serian What you should know about me: I’m running for City Commissioner because I want to create a Hollywood where future generations can thrive and succeed like never before. Having lived in Hollywood my entire life, the bond I share with this community has given me a unique ability to see Hollywood from both a long-term resident and a public servant viewpoint; understanding the needs of the city and its people. I am eager to meet with members of the Hollywood community to learn about the issues that are important to them, so that we as a whole can implement new ideas and solutions to give our Hollywood a brighter future. I certainly can’t imagine a better place to live. What will I do for you: As City Commissioner, I vow to ensure that every member of our community has an equal voice in city decisions. We are in this together, and as such, will make important decisions together. After all, every decision that is made

affects you – the loyal tax payers of our beautiful city. In an effort to provide for future capital improvement projects, I vow to work towards lowering our city’s debt and to only vote for contracts that are in Hollywood’s best interests. I bring to the table strong morals and ethics, a fresh voice, and common sense, with the intention of creating a Hollywood that is better for all of us. I promise to make every possible effort to ensure that not one tax dollar will ever go to waste again. Let us come together as members of our community to make Hollywood the city we want it to be.

BEACH NEWS

Hollywood Beach renourishment Margaritaville construction delayed project to make headway in 2012 By Emily Stein Intern Reporter Hollywood, Florida is a prime location with its warm weather and beautiful beaches. But as years passed, factors have caused the erosion of Hollywood Beach, 85% caused by inlets that interrupt the movement of sand. To combat the progressive wearing away of this center of life, tourism and commerce, the Hollywood Sand Bypass Project was conceived. The controversial $24.6 million plan for sand-bypass calls for collecting sand in a large cavity underwater, collecting remnants every three years and spreading them along a 6.2 mile array of Broward County beaches, Hollywood Beach included. According to Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober,”The sand bypass project is essentially designed to help re-establish the ocean’s natural flow of sand southward, which is being blocked by the jetties at Port Everglades.” The Beach Re-nourishment Project Segment III, involves spreading 1.7 million cubic yards of sand along South Broward Beaches. The project was the first beach restoration effort, backed by The Great Lakes Dock and Dredge

Company in more than a decade. To quickly and efficiently further the project’s progress, the topic of blasting underwater rock has surfaced, which has stirred much controversy. “The city has formally opposed the sand bypass project due primarily to the use of blasting as a method of construction” said Chaz Adams, Ft. Lauderdale’s Public Information Officer. So, what’s next for Hollywood Beach? Blasting was originally a necessary estimation as the county attempted to avoid working directly in front of beachfront homes and condos, but rock was encountered and blasting was required. A blast-less project could be cheaper for tax papers as well as dodge the difficulty of having to acquire permits. Beginning late November, a pit on the seafloor will be built to trap sand north of the port Everglades inlet and move it every three years to the thinning beaches on the south side. This project has been a perseverant effort since the 1960s, but the modernized outlook has been restructured to preserve the environment and its inhabitants while aiming for a sustainably sandy breadth of beach.

By Brett Daly Special to the Gazette The construction of the highly anticipated Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood has hit several roadblocks in recent months, including financing obstacles. Developer Lon Tabatchnik has missed his May deadline to secure the nearly $130 million needed to fund the 349-room resort and is now asking Hollywood to take on a larger investment in the project. The original plan for funding, as stated in the 99-year lease agreement, was to come from a variety of sources, including the EB-5 Investor Visa Program, a federal program that offers green cards to foreign nationals and their immediate family members to invest in a project that creates a minimum of 10 American jobs. The EB-5 project was to consist of $75 million of the project’s funding. City officials reported, however, that Tabatchnik has only secured about $13 million from foreign investors. Additional funding was to come from a $10-million developer equity contribution and from a $10-million

10

JULY 2012

loan from the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency to be repaid in 10 years at 5 percent interest. Now, however, Tabatchnik has asked the CRA to contribute an additional $15 million and hopes to receive a $50 million bank loan to make up the difference. The financial setbacks come after Tabatchnik had already asked the City Commission to push back the opening of the resort from March 2014 to August 2014 because of financial and permitting issues. Commissioners approved the delay back in March. The project – once built – will contain a 17 story hotel, restaurants and retail space, pool deck with a simulated wave pool, two outdoor lawns and a parking garage, among other attractions. The City sent out requests for proposals for the redevelopment of the city-owned, 6-acre parcel in the summer of 2009 and commenced negotiations with Margaritaville in May 2010. Margaritaville out-scored three other proposals, including Planet Hollywood. For more information, visit http:// www.hollywoodfl.org.

Julia Del Borrello’s Winning Essay:

“Who are you?” was the question my teacher asked as I stood in front of the 19 unfamiliar faces. The first thing that comes to mind may be your name, age, or favorite thing. But does that really define who you are? If that was the answer my new teacher wanted, she would have asked those specific questions. She wanted to know what was especially unique about the child standing next to her. I had to give her an answer. Finally, I came up with 3 simple words “I am music.” I continued, “I play many instruments, dance, sing, act and draw. I don’t go a day in my life without music and wouldn’t dare

In other words, what makes you “you”? · If you could have any talent, what would it be and why? Winners were chosen out of nearly 1,900 essay entries from around the country. “There was a broad range of creativity and originality in the contest entries,” said Joyce Cervone, coordinator communications/ community relations BIC Corporation. BIC’s national essay contest is part of an educational program called “Quality Comes In Writing” created for BIC by One2One Communications LLC. The program, which was distributed nationally in January 2012 to approximately 60,000 educators, is designed to help students in grades four through six develop strong writing skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

INFORMATION TO HELP MAKE IT A SAFE AND HAZARD-FREE HOLIDAY Personal fireworks, sparklers, glass containers, coolers, barbecues, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the beach and will be confiscated by Hollywood Police. This annual tradition on the beach occurs during the prime nesting season of sea turtles. If you plan to stake out a spot on the sand to watch the fireworks, please remember that nesting habits of sea turtles can be impacted by light sources. You should refrain from using flashlights and if you do encounter a sea turtle or sea turtle nest, do not disturb it. Knowingly interfering with a sea turtle nest could result in civil or even criminal penalties and fines. Spectator boats are not allowed to anchor on or above sea grass, hard bottom or coral reef structures and could face fines or criminal penalties for doing so. This is a condition of the event permit from the U.S. Coast Guard. Boaters also must remain at least 1,400 feet from the fireworks barge. The Hollywood Police Department Marine Unit will be on hand to assure boaters follow these regulations. All boaters are advised to travel at safe speeds and to watch for endangered species including manatees and sea turtles. Any collisions with or injury to sea turtles, manatees or other protected species must be reported to Sea Turtle Emergency Line (24 hours) at 954.328.0580 and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 1.888.404.FWCC (3922). Due to heavy traffic and limited parking, spectators are encouraged to utilize the free shuttle buses located at the two downtown Hollywood garages. The Radius garage is located at 250 N. 19 Avenue, with the shuttle stop on the northwest corner of Tyler Street and N. 19 Avenue. The Van Buren street garage is located at 251 S. 20 Avenue. The free buses will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Please note the last shuttles will leave for the beach at 8 p.m., at which time all eastbound vehicular traffic toward the beach will be shut down. The drop-off location for the shuttle buses will be at Johnson Street and A1A. Returning shuttles begin at 9:30 p.m. at the conclusion of the fireworks display. CONT. ON PAGE 13

LOCAL BUSINESS

Hollywood Chamber and Water Taxi join for networking on the Intracoastal

By Erin Scissors On June 27th, local business leaders took a tour on the Water Taxi of Hollywood’s finest waterfront establishments with the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. First stop was the Crowne Plaza, then Rivals Waterfront Sports Grill with a grande finale at GG’s Waterfront Bar and Grill. Once a hang out in the 1960’s of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, GG’s Bar and Grill is located in a prime spot overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway. Upon entering the indoor bar area, our party was promptly greeted by Will, our friendly and attentive bartender. We had the spectacular orange-raspberry colored sunset as a backdrop and enjoyed the half price premium drinks and appetizers that are offered during Happy Hour everyday from 4-7 p.m. GG’s offers both indoor and outdoor waterfront bars and dining as well as private dining rooms and a banquet room. The interiors are impeccable and inviting with open window breezes, cream colored dining chairs against dark mahogany details and contemporary light fixtures with a view of the open kitchen from the main dining room. 16

JULY 2012

We sampled the extremely fresh fried calamari, Caprese, filet mignon mini gourmet flat breads and mini crab cakes. Mostly, the topic of discussion was the date for our next Happy Hour gathering at GG’s. GG’s offers lunch and dinner daily with lunch starting at $10, a daily Happy Hour including half price on selected food and drink items and Sunday Brunch that includes a free Bloody Mary or Mimosa. Watch the fireworks and celebrate Fourth of July at GG’s with “All Day Happy Hour” from 11:30am-11pm. GG’s is located at 606 N. Ocean Drive Hollywood, FL 33019 (954) 929-7030 www.ggswaterfront.com Parking is available all day on the on site lot with complimentary valet parking from 4-6 pm and $3 after 6 pm. There is 940 feet of dock space for boaters. Visitors can also make a day of it by using the Water Taxi and saving 10% off of their check.

When he doesn’t want to be held or play, he spikes up and cannot be touched. Once you get to know him, however, he is really sweet and likes to lick your fingers and snuggle in your arms. Why you should speak “Reflexology”?

No, it is not “mumbo jumbo”; it is a healing practice that could provide you with the relief that has eluded you for years when it comes to lower body aches and pains, anxiousness, restlessness and lethargy. Reflexology is a treatment in which a therapist applies pressure on certain points of the feet and hands of a person, stimulating through the nervous system other organs and systems of the body that are mapped to the hand and foot extremities. This therapy helps in reducing stress, improving sleep quality, relieving pain and fatigue; stimulating digestion and circulation of the body, to name but a few. Additionally, the relaxation and calming effects of the treatment help release endorphins; the body’s “feel good” hormones. Combining Reflexology with the Ayurvedic healing principles provides a remarkable outcome by incorporating the use of a kasa bowl; a two-metal instrument commonly used in India to massage the feet. The conductivity of the metal interacts with the energy field of the body. This interaction aids homeostasis by helping to balance the systems in the body. It’s for these and many more reasons that you should speak Reflexology! Visit us at JothiVita to experience first-hand the healing power of Ayurvedic Reflexology. We provide personalized services to help you achieve a fulfilling life.

EDITORIAL

Public support for Margaritaville wanes with missed deadlines

PUBLIC COMMENTS “Personally, I would like to see either a Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Trader Joe’s or better still getting back a Barnes & Noble (like the Borders that was at the Galleria). Ft. Lauderdale has a Whole Foods and a Fresh Market, both are on Federal Highway and within 3 miles of each other and its the same in Aventura. What about a Cheesecake Factory? No matter which one you walk into the places are always busy; can you imagine one facing the water? Just a couple thoughts.” - Tanya Bouloy “I would be very careful in putting in a swimming pool. The Ft. Lauderdale Swimming Hall of Fame which is exactly the type of pool mentioned above has never made any money, rather it has consistently lost money. Besides the liability problem, a pool is an attractive nuisance for children. If the city goes with this idea, it should do so cautiously.” - Sue Gunzburger The Balance Sheet Blog is written and edited by Sara Case and Laurie Schecter. Both are Hollywood residents who have been citywide activists for years. Laurie owns a small business in Hollywood. Sara is a retired attorney. The Margaritaville project slated for Hollywood Beach is unable to start construction because the developer has not yet been able to raise enough money. The City has notified the developer that it’s in default. The developer is seeking more money and city staff are reviewing the project’s numbers to determine what if anything can feasibly be done. Every member of the public we’ve spoken with is flatly opposed to investing more public funds in this project. It’s one thing to allow the developer more time to come up with the money it needs, if there is a reasonable prospect that additional time would produce results. But it’s quite another for the City or CRA to put public funds, again, in a development that can’t attract sufficient private investment. We’ve seen that way too many times. No more, we all say. If the developer can raise the needed money within the next six months to a year, and we can continue to use the garage and the public park meanwhile, then we say consider doing that. If not, then it’s time to start over. One of our readers, Craig McAdams, has a suggestion for the property that we print in full below. As you can see, he is interested to hear what others think. “I hope to see an Aquatic Fitness Center on the site currently planned for Margaritaville. If the hotel and bars are not going to proceed, I want to propose something healthy and attractive for residents as well as visitors.

Several pools with water aerobics, learn to swim, competition and diving. Surrounded by a health club and juice bars and a healthy alternative to the alcohol scene. Most of the local hotels don’t have the space to provide a pool and this is why Joseph Young originally put a pool on this site. Yet it was demolished years ago.
 We

need a place to swim when the ocean is contaminated and closed. As well as when it’s too rough or sea lice and man o’ war. A pool is the best facility the city could provide on the public land, not a hotel with restaurants and bars.

I would welcome your opinion as well as the opinion of others to see if my idea is popular among the residents and guests that read your blog.” The Balance Sheet has long advocated for public use on this publicly owned beachfront property. We’ve also recommended health and fitness uses along the broadwalk. We think Mr. McAdams is onto something.

Memorial Milers prepare for Hollywood Half Marathon By Caron Conway A local group of runners is gearing up to participate in the first-ever half marathon to be hosted in Hollywood and inviting other interested runners to join them in training for the big event scheduled for December 2 along the oceanfront Broadwalk. The Memorial Milers, a half marathon training group of about 180 runners that’s based at the Memorial Regional Hospital Fitness & Rehabilitation Center, will start training in September for the Hollywood Half Marathon & 5K/10K - Florida. The event is the East Coast counterpart to the Hollywood Half Marathon in California. Memorial Milers head coach Lori Hart, a 10-year fitness instructor at the Memorial Regional Hospital gym and a Hollywood Beach resident, said the inaugural event is a real coup for the city. “Hollywood has never had a marathon or half marathon. So it’s really exciting for us,” Hart said. Runners can participate in the half marathon, which covers a 13.1-mile course, or 5K or 10K races. There also will be an untimed fun run for kids. The Hollywood Half Marathon is open to the first 2,500 runners to register in advance and will feature festive decorations, cheerleaders, pre- and postrace entertainment and live music, and an awards ceremony. Every runner, or walker, who crosses the finish line will receive a Hollywood Star medal. “It’s all about finishing. It’s not about placing,” Hart said. This philosophy is what the Memorial Milers was founded on back in October 2008, and what continues to generate interest in the training group among runners of all ages, fitness levels and running experience. DOWNTOWN NEWS

Russian billiards hall now open in Downtown Hollywood Lucky Pocket is the first billiards venue of its kind in Florida by Caron Conway Downtown Hollywood now has the distinction of being the first destination in Florida with a Russian billiards hall for enthusiasts of the specialized cue sport. Lucky Pocket billiards hall recently opened at 1937 Harrison Street, by owner Victor Ryzhykh, who signed a lease for the 2,800-square-foot space January 12. JM Property Group, LLC, which has an office in Hollywood, is the property owner. The leasing agent was Bill McConnell of NAI Rauch Weaver Norfleet Kurtz & Co. “The opening of Lucky Pocket will add new activity and further diversify the already eclectic assortment of businesses in Downtown Hollywood. The business will cater to both the local and visitor markets,” said Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency. Lucky Pocket offers four billiards tables and serves wine and beer. An expert

on Russian billiards also will be on hand to offer players tips. Russian billiards is a specialized form of the game that utilizes larger tables and smaller pockets than in traditional pool. “So it’s more like a professional sport,” Ryzhykh said. “But anybody will be welcome.” Ryzhykh said Russian billiards is comparable to snooker, a cue sport that is extremely popular in England. Russian billiards halls are rare in the U.S. despite the sport’s popularity in European communities, said Ryzhykh, a native of Russia who previously owned a Russian billiards hall in neighboring Kazakhstan. Ryzhykh, who moved to South Florida a year ago from Missouri, said he decided to open his new business in Downtown Hollywood because of the positive changes he’s seen take place there, including free parking, new businesses and art-inspired events that are generating greater visitor interest in the historic arts and entertainment district. There is no charge for on-street downtown parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Free parking is available in threehour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
