‘Can’t’ is not a word at Memorial. – Mark Steele
When three decades of firefighting finally took their toll on Chief Mark Steele’s knees, he knew exactly who he could trust. From his years of experience working with South Florida hospitals, Mark knew Memorial Regional Hospital South was his only choice for surgery and rehabilitation. “This is the only program I know to have the facilities, technology and the professionals devoted strictly to orthopedics and rehab – all in the same place,” Mark says. “You don’t see that anywhere else.”

After bilateral knee replacement, overhauling both knees at the same time, Mark’s road to recovery began before his feet hit the floor at the Rehabilitation Institute of South Florida. “Two hours after surgery, my physical therapist had me up and going,” Mark says. “Their enthusiasm and motivation is phenomenal. Throughout my entire rehab experience, there was never the option of ‘Oh, no. I can’t do it today.’ Their response is ‘Yes, you can … and yes, you will!’” “…and then you do!” 5/12

Celebrated dental practice caters to the entire family “No referrals needed: from cleanings to cosmetic, we do it all under one roof” Dr. Gorbatov and his associates have built and expanded their practice one relationship at a time. They’ve recently expanded from just one office in Hallandale opened 10 years ago, to offices in Hollywood and Wellington as demand for their exceptional care has grown. So how do Dr. Dmitry Gorbatov and Dr. Lana Anokhina, differ from most dentists? “We understand better than anyone how stressful it can be to have dental work done,” explains Dr. Gorbatov. “We’ve heard all the ‘horror stories.’ So when my wife and I created the vision for our patient’s experience it was very easy. We just had to recall all of those stories and just do the opposite,” he says with a smile. Dr. Gorbatov acknowledges, “Patients have a choice in who to trust with their smile. And that no matter how skilled a dentist is technically, if the skill is not matched with a gentle and friendly demeanor, the patient will choose another dentist.” This philosophy, which is grounded in gratitude, has been the foundation for growth and expansion. “Patients today know how important quality dental work is and they already come to us wanting an exceptional smile,” added Dr. Anokhina. “They do not need to be ‘sold’ on additional services or pressured to have more work done than is necessary.” We provide an atmosphere where the client is repected and empowered by their experience from basic dental care to popular cosmetic procedures.” PROFESIONAL BACKGROUND Dr. Dmitry Gorbatov and Dr. Lana Anokhina have more than 21 years experience in providing patients with excellence in General Dental Care, and specialize in Cosmetic Dentistry and Implantology: Veneers, Bonding, Metal-Free Crowns, Bridges and Innovative Dental Treatments. Originally from Russia, these highly-educated doctors attended Moscow Medical University later meeting at New York University, College of Dentistry. They have extensive post-graduate education in Dental Implantology, Smile Makeovers and Full Mouth Reconstructive Dentistry.
This husband and wife team work together in a state-of-the-art environment. The positive atmosphere is a reflection of their assiduous attention to the teeth, gums, mouth and smile; a complete ideal balance of function and beauty. An office visit is like spending a few hours with family, where you will discover their friendly caring staff. Dr. Gorbatov says, “We create a positive energy and atmosphere where our patients feel comfortable and at ease. We’ll answer any question a patient has and spend time with our patients to explain any of the procedures or options. We also work with them by offering a financial plan if needed.” “I feel being a good dentist is really a combination of art and science. First, you’re a doctor and must have excellent technical skills. But a great smile is much like a great work of art. I create beautiful teeth that will serve the patient for years and be aesthetically admired,” Dr. Gorbatov said. COSMETIC DENTISTRY Studying at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute of Aesthetic Dentistry, Dr. Anokhina offers many cosmetic procedures with complete makeovers that require a higher level of specialization and she is a certified provider for Botox, Mesotherapy and Restylane. Working delicately with the soft tissues that surround the mouth Dr. Anokhina says, “When I look at the human face, I look for harmony. When patients have a perfect smile but thin lips or wrinkles around the mouth, this does not achieve the optimal aesthetic result. Now, we can achieve those ideal effects with our safe and effective cosmetic procedures.” When living in South Florida it’s hard not to notice the beautiful people. One of the first things a person notices is their teeth and smile. Dr. Anokhina has done cosmetic procedures for many famous celebrities and respected patients to look and feel thier best. She is also regularly requested to correct work done by plastic surgeons. In addition, they have many international clients and are well-known in Moscow.

Meet Hollywood’s District 3 Candidates
In April 2012, the Hollywood Gazette began giving City Commission candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community in advance of the November 6 election. Each month will feature candidates from one district, followed by mayoral candidates. This month, District 3 candidates are featured. Make sure to check out the July issue for District 4 candidates. Previous candidate profiles can be found at www.hollywoodgazette. com under ‘archives.’ - J.S.
Heidi O’Sheehan What you should know about me: The reason I serve in public office is because I love the City of Hollywood and I know that I have the knowledge, leadership skills and integrity to help lead our community. I have worked hard to serve our City and my District through some of the most challenging times this City has ever faced and I have done so with strength, diligence, and respect. I have given equal service to all; whether you are a resident, small business owner or multimillion dollar developer you receive the same assistance. I have been married for 25 years and have three children. I served for 20 years in the United States Army. Immediately after the attacks of 9-11 I served as the Officer in Charge of the South Area Command Emergency Operations Center, supervising over 1,500 soldiers serving from Palm Beach to Key West and managing contracts and property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I subsequently served as a Company Commander on a one year deployment to the Middle East. My military experience and training translate well to public office and I believe, coupled with my 16 years of community involvement, make me the most qualified
candidate to serve as your Commissioner. What will I do for you: I will continue to work hard and be fully prepared for every meeting and every vote. I will vote for what I believe to be in the best long term interests of Hollywood and I will not cave in to personal attacks or any other form of pressure. I will treat all people fairly, and listen to all input. I will search for balanced and reasonable solutions to the issues facing our city. I will conduct myself at all times with dignity, compassion and integrity. Budget- I will continue to advocate the responsible spending of your money. I will seek a balance in providing quality services and taking care of our employees, while being committed to lowering your taxes and fees. Property standards- I am committed to stricter enforcement and compliance of residential and commercial standards. I will advocate more capital projects such as road paving and sidewalk upgrades and installation. Schools- I will continue to work for and implement policies that grow and improve educational opportunities for Hollywood families. Development- I will support redevelopment that will enhance our city and expand our tax base; I will oppose projects that do not fit in with the character of our City.
Traci L. Callari What you should know about me: I love our great City of Hollywood! I have been a resident for approximately 30 years and I am running for City Commission to continue to make an impact. My husband and I have 3 wonderful children, and we have been very active at Nativity Catholic Church and School for over 15 years. I also work as an ICU Trauma Nurse at Memorial Regional, just a few blocks away from our house. I have the experience, the energy and the vision to make the changes we need on our City Commission and return Hollywood to the City I’m so proud to call home. If you want to keep in touch with our campaign, please check us out on facebook at facebook.com/TraciforHollywood. What will I do for you: My top priority is to build trust between our City leaders and the community, and to return to a policy of fiscal responsibility. When I’m on the City Commission, I won’t let politics keep us
from doing what’s best for you, the residents. I want to maintain a family friendly environment, and provide incentives for businesses to come and stay in Hollywood. I also want to make sure our police and firefighters have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. As your district Commissioner, I’ll fight for our neighborhood to receive it’s fair share of infrastructure improvements. I’ll always have an open door and open ears, and I’ll personally return every phone call and email I receive. Your City government should be working for YOU, and that’s what I intend to do as your Commissioner.

Tequila Ranch hosts May 17 Party with a Purpose to benefit the Broward County Humane Society PHOTOS BY MELISSA DONALDSON
Photographer Melissa Donaldson wins again!
The staff at Emerald Hills Pharmacy (above) generously donated door prizes and a gift basket for the raffle to benefit the Humane Society of Broward County.
Party with a Purpose is a monthly networker/fundraiser sponsored by the Hollywood Gazette and hosted at venues located at the Seminole Paradise. Each month local community leaders gather to network and support a different local non-profit. May’s Party with a Purpose (PWP) benefited the Humane Society of Broward County. The Humane Society of Broward County provides shelter, aid and responsible adoptions to animals entrusted to our care, and educates the community about respect and kindness to all animals. Scott Evans from Scott Evans Productions enjoys the event with a guest. The event raised nearly six hundred dollars in two hours through admission fees and raffle ticket sales. Local women rule the rink; Gold Coast Derby Grrls rank 9th in the region by CARON CONWAY | Lead CorrespondEnt
The transition from former competitive figure skater to roller derby girl might seem like a stretch, but for Hollywood resident Christine Annichiarico, an original member of the Gold Coast Derby Grrls league, it was a perfectly natural segue. “I have been what they call a rink rat my whole life. This gives me the opportunity to roller skate. And I’m very competitive,” said Annichiarico, whose roller derby persona is “Freek-ARella.” Annichiarico, the office manager and events and promotions coordinator for Downtown Hollywood-based Bikes & Beauties motorcycle magazine, also is a coach for the Gold Coast Derby Grrls. Founded as the Broward County Derby Grrls in late 2007, the GCDG is currently ranked ninth out of 26 teams in the South Central Region for the WFTDA (Women’s Flat Track Derby Association), the sport’s international governing body. The Derby Grrls league is comprised of 60 members, including 45 skaters ages 18 to 47 who travel from
all over the tri-county area to practice at Kabooms in Davie three times a week. One of 32 leagues statewide and the only WFTDA league in South Florida, GCDG brings teams from all over the nation to bout in the region. Annichiarico—or “Freek,” as she is commonly referred to in the rink environment—is passionate about the roller derby subculture that has been experiencing a resurgence in popularity in the U.S. and beyond since 2005. Surgery for an injury Annichiarico suffered during warm-ups left her with

a metal plate and eight screws in her wrist but couldn’t keep her out of the rink for long. “I’m in pain all the time, covered in bruises— and then we show ’em off to everybody,” said Annichiarico, 38. “It’s a full-contact sport. This isn’t just pretty and fluff. It’s work.” She characterized roller derby as a “brutal sport” that’s a combination of “hockey, rugby and football, with less clothes.” But roller derby has evolved a great deal from its origins in the banked-track roller skating marathons of the 1930s, and in later decades when the theatrical elements overshadowed the athleticism, to an international sport with strict rules prohibiting intentionally inflicted injuries that is under consideration for the 2020 Olympics. Roller derby is played by two teams of five members skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups, or “jams,” in which both teams designate a “jammer” who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. For 24-year-old Derby Grrl Gillian Sullivan, a.k.a. “Barbwire Gordon,” roller derby’s appeal revolves around fun and fitness. “It keeps you in shape,” said Sullivan, who played soccer for 15 years and was a neighborhood skater before the 2009 roller derby movie Whip It introduced her to the sport. Gold Coast Derby Grrls is open to all interested women ages 18 and older, with no roller derby—or even roller skating—experience necessary. “It’s the only sport where you can come in with zero experience,” said Laura Garro, 27, a founding member, trainer and public relations director for GCDG. “We train you from the ground up.” And Garro, who goes by the derby
name “Carnivorous Licks,” means that literally. The typically three- to four-month training process includes learning how to fall to minimize the risk of injury. “Roller Derby is something that everybody can do,” Garro stressed. “A lot of girls who come here have never played a sport,” Annichiarico said. “They’re looking for something different.” “Freaks and weirdos” are welcomed with open arms, she added. “You come here, everybody fits in,” Annichiarico said. “This is my family.” Gold Coast Derby Grrls has women’s all-star, travel and B teams. There also is a men’s league. League members raise money to help cover the expense of competing in out-of-town bouts through dues and fundraisers, and sponsors are needed. FOR GOODNESS SAKE
Greyhounds trained to be heros for veterans By Miriam Cronkhite Barry Offenberger, a veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, now has a hero at his side to assist in his daily struggles. Service Dogs 4 Service Men is a non-profit organization that trains service dogs and matches them with veterans that would benefit from the dog’s instinct and training. Daniel De La Rosa is the director or training for the organization. They have found retired racing greyhounds are great candidates for the program. Sara Donadei, the founder and president of Service Dogs 4 Service Men, said they found they can train a dog in 4-6 months and they are only limited by the number of available foster families willing to be a home for the dog during the certification training. Offenberger was the first recipient in the program. He received a 2-year‑old brindle greyhound named Hero II at the the Palm Beach Kennel Club on May 25. “Thank you so much
for this organization. Sometimes I feel I am not worthy,” said Offenberger. He currently suffers from anxiety in crowded places, nightmares and depression. The program also gives the retired racing dogs a sense of purpose. Many of them still want to serve and aiding a wounded warrior definitely fulfills that desire. “These dogs were born to work,” said Barbara Masi, president of the Florida Southeast Chapter of Greyhound Pets of America. “Our Veterans have given us their everything for our freedoms and we strive to improve their lives through a service dog trained to aid and assist them to live their lives as fully and richly as possible. That is the least we can do for all they have done for us,” said Donadei. To foster a dog or sponsor training costs, log onto ServiceDogs4ServiceMen.com and like them on facebook at www.facebook. com/groups/223453567672034/.

Lee’s Locksmith and Bicycle Shop celebrates 68 years in Hollywood BY DAVID UDOFF | BUSINESS CORRESPONDENT
Serving South Florida for over 68 years, when you visit Lee’s Locksmith & Bicycle Shop Inc. you will discover a courteous and knowledgeable staff that listen to your needs. This is a popular store where customers truly feel part of the family. RIDE WITH CONFIDENCE
With 6,000 square feet, this is a unique bike and locksmith store combination. “I started working for the owner in 1976 and bought the business in 1984 and keep the same tradition and have been successful in both departments. This is a family business; my wife, brother, sister, son and son-in-law all work in the store,” said Salvino. “We sell everything from children’s first bikes to $10,000 professional racing bikes. Our top affordable bicycle brands include: Cannondale, Jamis, Raleigh, GT and Schwinn,” said Salvino. Experienced technicians are busy working, adjusting or assembling new bikes. Many of these friendly service employees have been with the store for years and can appreciate owning a great bike and the joys of cycling. Looking at the array of merchandise, one can easily break away from the routine of life and get into cycling especially with stylish accessories that will make your new bike stand out. Items include: Lights,
mirrors, bike carriers, baby seats, racks, bags, saddles and more. Be prepared for the road with a safety helmet, air pump, water bottles, set of tools and bicycle clothing and shoes. BREAKING AWAY
Currently, there is an increase with families getting back to bicycling and outdoor activities. Locally, Hollywood Broadwalk is known for its leisurely scenic bike path and there are also picturesque areas in around Hollywood and Aventura for the serious cyclists. “Bicycling has really taken off in South Florida and I want our customer to know that once you’re inside the store you will be immediately greeted, a qualified salesperson will assist you with a bicycle purchase, properly fitted, accessories can be added and go out and cycle for a great time,” said Salvino. BUYER BEWARE
Amber Smith, Marco Salvino, Marianna Bethan
When visiting with Marco, I could tell his passion is bicycling and he would love to talk more about this enjoyable and healthy activity; however, he has some breaking news he wants the readers to know.
“Our trusted name Lee’s Locksmith has been stolen and there are fake Lee’s Locksmith companies out there advertising on Google, The Yellow Book Yellow pages and the Internet. These unethical companies are representing themselves as our business so please call our number (954) 925-5157 to verify.” There is deception in trade practice and the method locksmiths try to get business in placing ads and misleading customers. There are copycats with similar names so don’t get cheated by an unscrupulous locksmith. “People call these locksmiths who are imposters with our name and they think they
are dealing with the original Lee’s Locksmith in Hollywood. When they do unsatisfactory work, we get the blame,” said Salvino. Security and Locksmith Services You can always trust a company that stands by their name and respected reputation. Lee’s Locksmith department provides the highest quality products and service to their customers for residential and commercial. They can provide a security and lock solution to fit your needs. From deadbolts, security cameras, alarm systems to automotive re-keying and help you if you’re locked out of your car. As a leading South Florida access control system integrator, Lee’s Locksmith department installs a variety of access control systems. To assure your valuables are secure in your home or office, they offer a complete line of safes. As a business mainstay in the community, the company participates in many Hollywood civic and non-profit school organizations and are supporters of recycling. Lee’s Locksmith & Bicycle Shop Inc. is located on the east side of Federal Highway at 1101 N Federal Highway, Hollywood, Florida. LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Chariots 4 Charity aids local non-profits There are many generous people in our community who want to help a particular charity and we are thrilled to enable them to make a meaningful contribution to the charity of their choice by selecting one of our worthy Charity Partners.
Joe Janosik, President and CEO, Chariots 4 Charity
There comes a time in every car’s life span when a decision needs to be made to either trade-in, sell or scrap. When that time comes, Chariots 4 Charity offers the perfect solution for anyone looking to donate or dispose of any type of used vehicles. Our nonprofit organization will professionally manage the donation process from start to finish and ensure proceeds from the re-sale go directly to one of the official Charity Partners of the donator’s choosing. We created Chariots 4 Charity to offer people an option for when they are ready to sell or trade-in a used vehicle.
Our unique non-profit has blossomed and now boasts a growing list of official Charity Partners. Wonderful charities like Broward Children’s Center, Angel’s Pediatric Heart House and HANDY, Animal Aid Inc., Florida Youth Orchestra, Broward 4H Foundation, Hospice of Palm Beach County and Hospice of Broward County are among the many worthy non-profits which benefit from our work. Chariots 4 Charity was founded two years ago to help local non-profits by providing an alternate source of revenue. Our donation process is straightforward and simple. Just call us. We will arrange for the pick-up of any chariot whether it be a car, truck, motorcycle, SUV, ATV, RV/camper, utility and cargo trailer, golf cart – even small aircraft and boats or watercraft are all gladly accepted. After vehicles are picked up, they are brought to a local state-of-the-art facility where they are thoroughly inspected and assessed for potential resale. If necessary, time and money are invested to
make repairs and recondition in order to maximize resale value. Items for sale are photographed and promoted on Chariots 4 Charity’s Facebook page. Chariots 4 Charity also assists nonprofits that might be the beneficiary of large tangible property. Our experts are adept at transporting, storing, marketing and selling any item. We also manage the paperwork, title transfers and issue applicable tax receipts. We are grateful for the positive feedback we’ve received, the continued support from our community and the generosity of our sponsors. With their help, we have been able to assist many people in need. I encourage anyone who has a vehicle they are ready to part with to give us a call 954-915-3002 or visit website www.chariots4charity.org. I also invite people to read our many “recommendations” on my LinkedIn page and welcome visitors to connect on my personal Facebook page. We are at your service.

COVER STORY
Nathan Sawaya’s LEGO® artwork returns to the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood from June 9 - August 19 Back by popular demand! The works of internationally renowned artist Nathan Sawaya, who uses LEGO® bricks for his creations, returns to the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood on Saturday, June 9, and will be on display through Sunday, Aug. 19. In the 2012 exhibition of “The Art of The Brick,” the New York-based Sawaya will present a variety of both large- and small-scale works. Sawaya will create an original LEGO sculpture in the gallery during the live “Day Build” Saturday, June 9. Previous exhibitions of Sawaya’s work broke all previous attendance records in the Center’s 30+ year history. The Center will hold an opening reception for Sawaya and Karen StarostaGilinski on Friday, June 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. There is also a live “Day Build” with Sawaya on Saturday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The opening reception is free to Center members, while non-members pay $10 per person. Members are free for the live “Day Build,” while non-members pay $10 per adult admission and $6 per senior, student, or children ages 4 to 17. Children age 3 or younger are free with a paid adult admission. (Please note that Broward Attractions and Museums Month memberships/discounts are not valid for the opening reception or live “Day Build.”) For Sawaya’s show, the Center is bringing back the popular LEGO interactive room, where children of all ages can create their own masterpieces. Also in conjunction with the “The Art
Nathan Sawaya, Kiss, 2010, brickartist.com.
of The Brick,” the Center is presenting again the Florida BRICK Creation Challenge. Florida residents ages 6 and older can use their own LEGO® pieces to create and compete in this exciting, state-wide contest and exhibition. Pieces will be displayed in the Center’s gallery and each participating group of entrants will be awarded prizes according to the contest’s categories. For more information, including contest rules, visit ArtandCultureCenter.org. Sawaya is a former attorney who first gained national attention in 2004 by winning LEGO®’s nationwide search for a professional Master Model Builder. His creations over the years have resulted in enormous artistic and popular success. His exhibitions have set international museum
and gallery attendance records, won him critical acclaim, earned him a wide range of high profile commissions and resulted in appearances on such TV shows as “The Colbert Report,” “Late Night With David Letterman,” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” He was even featured on the iconic quiz show “Jeopardy!” with a category titled “The LEGO Artistry of Nathan Sawaya.” In addition to the “The Art of The Brick,” the works of Karen StarostaGilinski, a contemporary Miami artist, will be shown Saturday, June 9 through Sunday, Aug. 6. StarostaGilinski alters a variety of materials, often including plush, into whimsical, humorous, and at times unsettling works of art. For her “Cloud 9” exhibition at the Center, Starosta-Gilinski will show pieces from her Cotton Candy
Sculpture Series (2009-2010) as well as her Large-Scale Sculpture Series (20112012). This series of sculptures seem cute and innocent at first, but actually involve psychology and explore personality traits ranging from tender and sweet to menacing and complicated. Gallery hours for this exhibition are Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. General admission to the Center’s galleries are $10 for adults; $6 for students, seniors, and children ages 4 to 17; and free to Center members as well as children under the age of 4. Group tours/field trips are also available. Free Admission Day, presented in part by Wells Fargo, is Sunday, June 17 and Sunday, July 15. For more information, please call 954.921.3274 or visit ArtandCultureCenter.org.

Maili Hi, I am “Maili” and I am a female 12-year old Rotti/ Black Lab mix. I came to the Clark family when I was 6 weeks from the Humane Society. My parents named me after the surf spot in west side Hawaii. I became the most famous and adored dog in my neighborhood in East Park. I play with anyone and my mom’s piano students LOVED me so much, they ended up getting dogs like me! I am a
good helper too! I bring bags from Publix into the kitchen (paper, of course!) and I baby sit my brother Kai. I can turn light switches if mom asks but swimming and diving are my fave! I can dive 6 feet under, no problem! I can even get a rock from down there for you! I’d like to thank all of my friends for loving me and for our great friendships. I have the best life a dog can have.

Over the summer, residents from the Neighborhood Pride team will be walking door-to-door on the corridor to meet business owners and tenants, learn more about their particular needs, and seek ideas from them about corridor enhancements. The Johnson Street business corridor between 56th Avenue and 441 is about to meet the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations’ Neighborhood Pride team. A resident-driven pilot project to help rejuvenate the corridor is in the works. If successful, this project can be replicated in other Hollywood neighborhoods. Decades of neglect have taken their toll on this three-block stretch that runs through the newly organized Hollywood Gardens residential neighborhood. Many useful services and stores populate the corridor. Some well-maintained properties are located here, such as Mimi’s, Gino’s, Hispanic Unity and a few others. But in general the corridor looks like a run-down hodgepodge of properties badly in need of refurbishment, with vehicles parked every-which-way. Many vacancies exist that could provide space for companies forced to relocate as 441 is widened. But its current appearance may not provide much attraction for businesses moving from 441. The Neighborhood Pride team is organizing community and city support, in the form of in-kind services, from local schools and community groups as well as city staff, to help the businesses improve the curb appeal of their properties. In addition, somewhat similar to Superior Small Lodgings on Hollywood Beach, the group is creating a Neighborhood Pride Award to be conferred in 2013 on businesses that clean up and beautify their properties. The award will focus only on

SAFECARE MEDICAL CENTER “Your Neighborhood Primary Care Physicians’ Office Serving the Community Since 1967.”
Does Hollywood Hills needs its own middle school? Hollywood Hills resident Daniel Metsch recently created a petition to build or create a new middle school in Hollywood Hills. “There is no middle school for the Hollywood Hills area (west of I95, east of the turnpike, south of Griffin Road, north of Hollywood Boulevard) yet there are three (3) middle schools (Olsen, Attucks, Beachside Montessori K-8) east of I95 in Hollywood and one (Driftwood) west of the Florida Turnpike,” explains Metsch. “Hollywood Hills deserves its own middle school.” Metsch is inviting the community to sign the petition through social media outlets like Facebook, to urge the Broward County School Board, School District, and Superintendent to build or create a middle school for the Hollywood Hills area. If you are interested in signing the petition, log onto change.org and search for “Hollywood Hills” or scan the QR code on the right with your smart phone. - J.S.

Live music district taking shape in Downtown Hollywood STAFF PHOTO BY JENNIFER SANDOMIR
by CARON CONWAY | Lead CorrespondEnt
Downtown Hollywood has become a live music hotspot, thanks to the concerted efforts of city officials and business owners who share a vision for the historic arts and entertainment district as a vibrant live music destination. As part of Mayor Peter Bober’s initiative to create a “centralized hub for live music” that has been lacking in South Florida, city commissioners on May 2 approved new regulations that make it easier for downtown venues in the Live Music District to obtain an extendedhours liquor license. The new permitting process affords a lower fee and allows establishments that serve food to remain open and sell alcoholic beverages two hours later, until 4 a.m., if they provide live musical entertainment for at least three hours a night on three or more nights a week. Under the new regulations, the late-night license process for downtown businesses is much quicker, the fee is greatly reduced and establishments do not need to have a kitchen. Mayor Bober’s live music initiative kicked off Feb. 18 with the debut of ArtsPark Live!, a year-round free concert series featuring a variety of high-quality acts every Friday and Saturday night at the state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater that
Mayor Bober’s live music initiative kicked off Feb. 18 with the debut of ArtsPark Live!, a year-round free concert series featuring a variety of high-quality acts every Friday and Saturday night at the state-of-the-art outdoor amphitheater that opened at the ArtsPark at Young Circle last June. opened at the ArtsPark at Young Circle last June. Numerous downtown venues currently offer ongoing live music, including The Big Easy Bar and Grille, Chocolada Bakery & Café, La Barraca Bar, Megabite Chillout Lounge, Native Florida Tap Room & Music Hall, Octopus Garden and Spice RestoLounge. “It’s refreshing to find a mayor and city government that support the arts in the marketplace,” said Kilmo Doome, owner of Native Florida Tap Room & Music Hall, at 2006 Hollywood Blvd., and an accomplished bass player who toured with Blood, Sweat & Tears and other bands. Kilmo previously owned live music
fixture Alligator Alley in Fort Lauderdale, which closed in 2009, and he searched for the right location for two years prior to opening his new club in February. He said the new Live Music District provides the opportunity for him to promote creative original music in a variety of genres by both local and national artists performing in an intimate concert club setting. City officials and downtown business owners say the creation of a live music destination has economic as well as cultural benefits. Venues that provide quality live music “make the trip to Downtown Hollywood well worth the effort for music lovers,” said Chris Eberle, president of the Downtown Hollywood Business Association (DHBA) and co-owner
of The Big Easy Bar and Grille with Jimmy Sklavenitis. “With live music heard all through the streets of Downtown Hollywood almost every night of the week, we are well on our way to becoming South Florida’s live music capital,” said Megabite Chillout Lounge owner Adam Morgan. For more information on Downtown Hollywood businesses or events, call 954-9242980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org. There is no charge for on-street downtown parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Free parking is available in three-hour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

A New You Women are particular about their looks and have always wanted to look their best. Hair is one of the first things a person observes; its length, color, softness, healthiness and shine. Is your hair unruly? Have a keratin treatment and get that straight hair ready for the pool or beach, then get all the attention. When a massage is what the doctor ordered, enjoy a deep tissue, Swedish or Reiki massage. Say goodbye to stress and hello to health, well being and balance. Get ready for summer with professional waxing services using only the finest organic products. Your skin will feel smooth as silk with these waxing services: lips, chin, brow, under arms, arm, bikini, full bikini, 1/2 leg and full leg.
Nail Spa What women or man would not want a relaxing manicure or pedicure? Come to expect the utmost in nail care and hygiene with the highest quality therapeutic lotions and gels. Relax in a comfortable chair while your feet soak in a warm bath of swirling water as the nail technician does her magic. Get away from the routines of every day life and enjoy their spa.
