Where Will Your Heart Lead You? “To more fishing!” José’s cardiac catheterization at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute revealed what his doctor feared: a 90-percent blockage in a main artery. He was nervous about having double bypass surgery, but José knew he was in good hands. “I was scared, but they gave me the feeling I could trust them. My surgeon was Dr. Cortelli, and he did an excellent job of patching me up. He was a great doctor—very professional and very reassuring.” José is back on the water, hoping to catch that prize tuna. He looks forward to seeing his children graduate college, and to more cruises. “Memorial saved my life. Because of Memorial, I have a second chance at life, and I’m living it to the fullest.”

José, Open Heart Surgery Patient

“We caught José’s blockage before he had a heart attack. You can learn your risks and prevent a heart attack before it happens.” Michael Cortelli, MD Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery

MARCH 2013

Delaware Chicken Farm & Seafood Market has been a local institution at 4191 N. State Road 7 since the Carter family opened their small chicken and egg ranch in 1951. Delaware has since expanded to a retail, wholesale and shipping provider of fresh seafood, hormone-free poultry, and gourmet and game meats. The market also carries prepared foods, grocery items and wines. (8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 8:30 a.m.6:30 p.m. Friday, 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. 954-983-6831; www.delawarechicken.com) Hollywood resident Andrea Ramos usually shops at Delaware on Tuesdays to “catch all the specials,” she said. “I am a regular shopper at Delaware and I love it. The service is excellent and the quality of the food is great.” Doris’ Italian Market & Bakery, at 2424 Hollywood Blvd. since 1947, is home to a full-service meat department, ItalianAmerican deli, fresh produce and seafood departments, prepared dishes, hard-to-find specialty items, wines and an Italian-style bakery featuring pastries and wedding cakes. The original of five South Florida stores owned by John and Joe Alfano, the Hollywood location also offers customized gift baskets and catering. (9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. 954-9219647; www.dorismarket.com) Elayne Boehm has been a regular Doris’ customer for more than 10 years. “Doris’ has beautiful cuts of meat – fresh and tender. I love the steaks,” said Boehm, a Hollywood resident. “It smells so good when you go in there, and everything I’ve ever purchased from there was wonderful.” Gino’s Italian-American Deli at 5729 Johnson St. is in its third expanded location

since opening in 1974. The “King of the Meat Market” features homemade Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese, deli meats and cheeses, prepared foods, fresh produce, wines, Italian pastries, breads, and custom-designed cakes and wedding cakes, with full-service catering also available. (8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday. 954-9660656; http://ginosmarket.com) Donna Angelo, a recent first-time visitor to Gino’s, made the almost 15-mile drive from Miami on the recommendation of a friend who regularly shops there. “They carry a lot of imported Italian products, and I was very impressed with the deli department,” Angelo said. “I’ll be back. It’s definitely worth the drive.” The MarketPlace, open since 1989 at 3325 Sheridan St., offers prime meats, fresh seafood, deli meats and cheeses, sandwiches and wraps, soups, salads, fine wines, unique grocery and specialty items, and catering services. Healthy restaurant-quality prepared foods include several different chicken, fish and vegetable dishes that are prepared fresh daily with little or no salt and are baked, not fried. (9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday–Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. 954-963-3880; http:// TheMarketPlaceCaters.com) MarketPlace regular Billy Gante has been stopping in three times a week for the past three years to have lunch or take out prepared meals. “There’s such a variety, and the food is really good,” said Gante, a Boca Raton resident who works for a company based in Davie. Mimi’s Ravioli, which opened at 5714 Johnson St. in 1981, is known for its preparedon-premises pastas, mozzarella cheese, Sicilian rice balls, and cannoli cream and shells, and has its own brand of gourmet products, Good Health. Owners Frank and Linda Billisi offer more than 100 different pasta varieties, including a low-sodium line, as well as sauces, soups, prepared dishes, packaged pastas, baked goods, catering and imported specialty items. (8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday–Saturday and 8 a.m.2 p.m. Sunday. 954-983-3711; http://www. mimisravioli.com) Jim Falkowski has been a Mimi’s Ravioli customer for close to 15 years. “They have the absolute best, freshest homemade mozzarella in Broward County,” said Falkowski, who lives in Cooper City and owns and operates a business, La Mar Dry Cleaners, in Miramar. “They make it every day, and when you pick it up, it’s still warm.” Penn Dutch Food Center, a familyowned business established in 1975 by Edwin and Sophie Salsburg at 3950 N. 28th Terrace, carries everything from fresh meats to fresh

(8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday – Saturday and 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. 954-9217144; www.penn-dutch.com) Fort Lauderdale resident David Peck said he appreciates the “complete shopping experience” Penn Dutch provides. “They have the freshest quality meats at the lowest prices, top-quality fresh fruits and vegetables, and a large selection of cold cuts, cheeses and other appetizers,” Peck said. “The fresh fish section is the best available at quality that is second to none.” Hollywood also is home to several green markets, including Brothers Farmers Market at 4191 N. EVENTS

Free festival ‘Peace in the Park’ set for March 24 Organized by a group of committed volunteers from the Brahma Kumaris in conjunction with ArtsPark, this unique community event is all about bringing peace and wellbeing into our lives. Everyone is invited to unplug from their daily routine and experience an afternoon to feel rejuvenated, energized, and a sense of peace. All events will lead up to a group meditation for the world at the end of the festival described by previous fairgoers as a powerful and liberating experience. According to Roz Reich, Hollywood resident and one of the organizers, “The most important aspect we’d like to offer the community is the atmosphere of peace...we hope you soak up as much as you need and carry it back into your lives.” Activities for the body, mind and spirit include Meditation Samplers, Tai Chi, Laughter Circle, Meditation in Motion, Art and Environmental exhibits, Children’s activities, Virtuescopes, Peace Tent, and “Tent Talks” on Health, Parenting, and the Benefits Meditation. The fair features performances by hometown talent, including “reggae ambassador” Willie Stewart appearing with local youth presenting

Rhythms of Africa; ten year old singing sensation Julia Dale; jazz harpist Stacey Berkley; and acoustic musicians Betan and Berner. Wanda Myles, on-air local host of “Morning Edition” on WLRN radio will emcee the event. Willie Stewart and Veronica McHugh, Director of the Miami Brahma Kumaris Meditation Center, are scheduled to be interviewed on WLRN Radio’s “Topical Currents” with Joseph Cooper the week of March 18th. Kathy’s Place carries on legacy of longtime Downtown Hollywood hair salon

By Caron Conway

A popular landmark hair salon in Downtown Hollywood has changed ownership, but little else, with the opening of Kathy’s Place at 1903 Harrison St., the former site of Rose’s Place, which served the community for more than three decades. Original salon owner Rose Eicholz officially passed the torch to new owner Kathryn Foley, a hairstylist at Rose’s Place for seven years, on Feb. 1. Eicholz will continue to work at the salon part time, while Foley continues the legacy that made Rose’s Place a local institution with a loyal clientele: personalized attention and quality services provided at affordable prices in a relaxing, STAFF PHOTO: TIM GRAVELINE welcoming environment. to make Kathy’s Place her own with some “It’s just time for us to swap places minor aesthetic changes. “I’m very excited. with each other,” said Foley, who credits It’s my time.” her “wonderful working relationship and Kathy’s Place provides salon services friendship” with Eicholz with guiding her for women, men and children, including along her career path. “She’s very supportive haircuts, styling, straightening, perms, color, of me. pleased to be a first-time business owner in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district. “The downtown area is just really livening up. The free street parking helped a lot,” said Foley, who signed the lease with property owner Eipel LLC on Jan. 29. “It’s a great area, and I’m happy to be a part of it.” Kathy’s Place is open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with later hours available by appointment. For more information, call 954-701-1702.

Interior designer Omara Frybarger is bringing her talent and unique decorating style to Downtown Hollywood with the opening of Omara’s Heaven, a vintage gift shop, in midFebruary at 2015 Harrison St. Omara’s Heaven specializes in casual-elegant furniture in a style Frybarger characterizes as “shabby chic with a French chateau twist.” When the Chicago native relocated to Florida nine years ago, she was struck by the proliferation of furniture that was tropical- or nauticalthemed or ultra-modern. “That’s not very cozy, that’s not very warm,” Frybarger said. “I wanted to introduce a different style of furniture to South Florida.” The vintage offerings at Omara’s Heaven include desks, table lamps, chandeliers and mirrors, as well as a variety of gift items and wallpaper, fabrics and interior design services. “If you like the style of the store, I could bring it to your home,” said Frybarger, an interior designer for 15 years. Many of the vintage pieces are one-of-a-kind – “just works of art, really,” said Frybarger, who distresses

and gilds many of the objects herself. “I’m big on detail, and I’m very passionate about what I do. I like a little sparkle of elegance in everything.” “Everything that’s in her store, nobody will ever see again,” said Frybarger’s husband Scott. “She has her hand in everything. She truly is talented.” Many of Frybarger’s finds come from estate sales, while others are “custom-made just for me,” she said. Among the shop’s gift selection are vintage jewelry, perfumes, candles and picture frames – “pretty much all our goodies that we love. It’s really a girl’s store,” said Frybarger, the mother of two daughters ages 11 and 5. She said she’s very excited to launch her new business in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district. “I love Downtown Hollywood,” said Frybarger, a Hollywood Lakes resident. “I think it’s like our Coral Gables. It has such a warm feeling.” Omara’s Heaven will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and by appointment on Sunday. For more information, call 954579-1062.

Sushi Room - A Sake Lounge, a popular contemporary Japanese restaurant on Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood since 2004, is now serving its awardwinning cuisine to weekday lunch patrons. Well-known for its Japanese fusion cuisine, quality sushi, exotic cocktails, over 20 different sake drinks and chic décor, Sushi Room is located at 1810 S. Young Circle, adjacent to sister eatery Mama Mia Italian Ristorante, a Downtown Hollywood mainstay for more than two decades. Both restaurants are owned and operated by longtime local restaurateurs Joe and Thomas Franco. The lunch crowd at Sushi Room has grown each week since the Franco brothers first opened for lunch on Jan. 21. “We’re starting to get a really good response,” said Vito Zinerco, the general manager of both Sushi Room and Mama Mia. “We’ve actually been looking at this for quite some time. We wanted to make sure we had the right chefs and cooks in place.” With the recent return of original Executive Chef Russell Sulit, the timing was ideal to expand Sushi Room’s hours

Sushi Room’s signature special roll: Sushi Room Roll

to include lunch service. Lunch menu selections range from $4 to $12, and diners also can opt to order from Mama Mia’s kitchen, which offers pasta dishes, a variety of entrées, appetizers, soups, salads and homemade desserts, with sandwiches and wraps also available during lunch. Among the popular lunch selections at Sushi Room is the Bento Box, named for the Japanese compartmentalized dining tray. Each menu selection comes with soup and salad, with a variety of other samplings to choose from, including sushi, sashimi, fried rice, tempura, croquettes and gyozas, or pan-fried dumplings. “Sushi Room has always been known not only for our portions but also the quality of our food,” Zinerco said.

Sushi Room has consistently received rave reviews from loyal customers and food critics alike. In May it will be featured on Check, Please! 7th Annual Angel PAWS event raises over $63K for Humane Society PAWS is dedicated to providing the volunteer and financial support to assist the Humane Society of Broward County in its mission to provide shelter, aid and responsible adoptions to animals entrusted to its care, as well as, to expand community awareness through education regarding respect and kindness to all animals. All funds raised through PAWS’ events directly benefit all the animals and programs at the Humane Society of Broward County. PAWS recently hosted their 7th Annual Angel PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) Luncheon & Fashion Show at the Coral Ridge Country Club. This year's theme was "Let Your Love Grow" and thanks to the dedicated efforts of Event Chair Susan Smith and her committee, over $63,000 was raised for the animals at the Humane Society of Broward County! Jacey Birch of WPLG Channel 10 was the honorary emcee of the soldout event. Mobile adoptions were held on-site, with three adorable puppies and two irresistible kittens finding wonderful new homes. Ambassador dog Duke also attended, greeting guests as they arrived. The highlight of the day, of course, was the fashion show, which featured

the season's very latest styles from Bloomingdale's Boca Raton. Bloomingdale's Boca Raton donated a portion of their sales at the event as well as at the store to PAWS. A silent auction took place during the luncheon, which included a variety of vintage designer handbags and shoes, such as Chanel, Prada and Fendi. Beautiful designer jewelry and accessories were also featured. A prize drawing was held, featuring dine around town packages and a Tory Burch Printed Faille and Resin Frame bag donated by Bloomingdale's Boca Raton. The grand prize of a GCI Contemporary Ladies 14K White Gold Watch was donated by Gem Couture, Inc.; designs by Melody. The lucky winner of this beautiful watch was Susan Greaton. The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from companies and people who want to help us help the homeless animals. The shelter has only one location and is not affiliated with any national or local organization with a similar name. To see animals up for adoption or find out about other upcoming events visit our website at www. humanebroward.com.

Technon Tactical offers free security course for teachers

BY CARON CONWAY LEAD CORRESPONDENT

Technon Tactical, a security consulting firm in Downtown Hollywood, is offering a free course on Sunday, March 24 to empower South Florida teachers with a plan of action for safeguarding their young charges and themselves in critical situations. Registrations are now being accepted for the program, Classroom Defense Strategies for Teachers, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Technon Tactical Academy, 2028 Harrison St., Suite 102. Course topics are Strategies for Keeping Your Kids Safe, Tactics for Overcoming an Intruder, Simple and Effective Defense Techniques, and Interactive Simulations and Drills. Participants also will learn about the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course, firearms safety and how firearms work, and how to use a handgun. The course qualifies for the Florida concealed carry permit.

Learn to protect yourself and your students in critical situations. Next course: Sunday, March 24th, 2013.

Technon Tactical co-owner and course instructor Joe Gehr said, “The possibility of a serious security breach in a school setting is unlikely but a sad reality in the world we live in. Teachers should be trained to prepare for the unexpected. “This is the alternative to just waiting and doing nothing,” added Gehr, who has more than 20 years of security experience that includes serving as an adviser to schools, an international consultant, a trainer for SWAT and other police and military units, an NRA pistol instructor and

chief range safety officer, a hand-tohand combat instructor and a captain in the Israel Defense Forces. The program’s debut on Jan. 20 was well-received, drawing some 30 teachers at the kindergarten level through 10th grade and from throughout the tri-county area. About 40 school staff members participated in the program when it was offered on Feb. 17. “It was a great response. We were fully booked,” Gehr said. “They came from all over.” Technon Tactical offers “Real Training for the Real World,” conducting the classroom defense program at schools as well as providing tailor-made security consulting for schools, houses of worship, businesses and families. The company was launched in late 2005 in Aventura. “We trained most of South Florida’s SWAT teams,” Gehr said. “We still work with law enforcement but we’re concentrating on civilians.” Technon Tactical’s safety system is both proactive and reactive, entailing a tour of the grounds, security assessment, recommendations

for making the property more secure and the implementation of a response plan. There is no charge for a consultation. Technon Tactical’s newest location in Downtown Hollywood opened in July 2012. “We like the area,” Gehr said. “Downtown Hollywood is a centralized location and there’s a lot going on here.” Gehr hopes to offer the free classroom defense course for school staff members once a month. “This is a service for the community,” he said. “It’s important to empower our teachers with knowledge that can keep them and our kids safe.” Check-in for the March 24 program will be at 8:30 a.m., with a noon lunch break at nearby Café Volare. The cost for lunch is $5. For more information, call 954-3647516, or visit www.technontactical. com/classroom-defense-for-schoolteachers-at-technon-tactical.html or www.proactiveandprepared.com.

Low-cost health screenings Relay for Life of Hollywood offered at Hollywood Jaycee seeks teams, volunteers Hall Weds., March 13 The Hollywood Jaycees, sponsored by Holy Cross Hospital will be offering "Life Line Screenings" on Wednesday, March 13, 2013. Pre-registration is required. Life Line Screening uses painless ultrasound (sonogram) to see the plaque build-up in your arteries--a leading cause of stroke. 80% of strokes can be prevented, that's why these ultra sound screenings can help save your life. There are five different types of screening for different areas of the body, each is listed along with a brief description of what the screen is for. Stroke/Carotid Artery Screening a ultrasound evaluation of the carotid arteries that screens for buildup of fatty plaque - the leading cause of strokes. $60 Heart Rhythm Screening (Atrial Fibrillation)- A quick and easy test using EKG electrodes placed on the arms and legs to identify the presence or absence of an irregular heartbeat at the time of the screening. $60

Abdominal Arterial Disease Screening - Ultrasound is used to screen for signs of an aneurysm in the abdominal aorta that could lead to a ruptured aortic artery. $60 Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening - Evaluates for peripheral arterial disease (plaque buildup) in the lower extremities. It is 4-5 times more likely you will die from heart disease if you have peripheral arterial disease. $60 Osteoporosis Risk Assessment - An ultrasound measurement of the heel bone to determine abnormal bone mass density. Osteoporosis is painless and silent in its early stages. $35 You can purchase any vascular screening for just $60 or get all five screenings for only $159, a savings of $116. The Hollywood Jaycees is located at 2930 Hollywood Blvd., on the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and I-95. For further information and preregistration please call 1-800-324-1851.

Since 1978

The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in Hollywood to join their Relay For Life of Hollywood. The organization is seeking volunteers– community leaders, cancer survivors, caregivers, anyone wanting to make a difference – who are interested in getting involved in the fight against cancer through fundraising in their signature event, the Relay For Life, April 19-20, ArtsPark at Young Circle. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. The events are held overnight to honor and symbolize a cancer patient’s journey through treatment. A Relay Team is a group of 12 to 15 people, led by a Team Captain, who commit to raising at least $100 each by participating in the overnight fundraising event. All of the proceeds raised fund the mission of the American Cancer Society to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. While teams do the majority of their fundraising prior to the event, many teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during the event which creates an 18-hour festival-like atmosphere. “The Relay For Life is all about our

community uniting with the American Cancer Society and supporting its efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” said Florida State Representative, Shevrin Jones, Honorary Chairman. “Volunteers and participants who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event are making a commitment to let Hollywood know that cancer can be defeated.” In 2012, Relay For Life events across the state of Florida raised over $20 million to help cancer patients and their families in local communities and to fund lifesaving cancer research. The Relay For Life of Hollywood raised $54,000 to help the American Cancer Society save more lives by helping people stay well, get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. To learn more about the Relay For Life of Hollywood and to sign up your team, attend the next Team Party. The next Team Party held on Wednesday, February 27, Hollywood Jaycee Hall, 2930 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood. The Team Parties are an opportunity for all teams to come together and learn about fundraising and the mission of the American Cancer Society. Everyone is invited to attend. You can get involved by registering a team at www.relayforlife.org/ hollywoodFL or call Marika Guyton, 954549-8602.
