COVER STORY
Community leaders organize pub crawl to raise cash for local non-profit senior center By Caron Conway Lead Correspondent The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s emerging leaders will be hosting a good time for a good cause on Sat., March 29 at the Hollywood Beachtown Hop, a restaurant-and-bar crawl showcasing downtown and beach nightlife and benefiting the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center/Southeast Focal Point, a local nonprofit agency. For a $20 donation, adult revelers can “hop” on and off a bus from 6 to 11 p.m. and enjoy free samples of food and beverages at about 20 sponsoring venues on scenic Hollywood Beach and in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district. The “funraising” event is a community service project developed by nine members of the chamber’s Leadership Hollywood Class XXXVIII. Leadership Hollywood is an interactive program that allows participants to view their community up close and acquire a unique knowledge of resources and services available in the city, county and state. All proceeds from the Hollywood Beachtown Hop will benefit the Meyerhoff Center, a 35-year-old agency at 3081 Taft St. providing programs and social services to older adults that has lost more than $100,000 in federal funding over the past two years. “We were so inspired by the enthusiasm of the seniors that participate in the programs at the Meyerhoff Center that we wanted to help,” said event chair Tina Buccellato, a member of the Leadership Hollywood team and the owner of Muzart - Creative Arts Studio in Downtown Hollywood. “The center is a huge asset because it caters to the elderly
and keeps them active, healthy and involved. They belong somewhere.” The Hollywood Beachtown Hop will start at downtown’s The Tipsy Boar and the beach’s Taco Beach Shack, where maps of sponsoring venues will be provided. The bus will loop around every 15 minutes. Some of the establishments also are within walking distance of one another. Event organizers are shooting for 400 to 500 people to get on board the Hollywood Beachtown Hop. “The entire community is invited to participate,” said Dr. Jason Ogonowski, a member of the Leadership Hollywood group. “The nightlife in Hollywood is booming, so you can start the party at The Tipsy Boar on Harrison Street or at Taco Beach Shack on the beach and then visit other venues including Downtown Hollywood favorite Mickey Byrne’s and newcomer Organic Brewery on the beach.” Buccellato said the Hollywood Beachtown Hop not only will help the struggling Meyerhoff Center continue to provide much-needed services but will also assist the business community by promoting individual local establishments and tying together two very different districts. “While raising funds for a small, struggling non-profit in Hollywood, we are also helping bring people to local restaurants and bars. We are creating awareness for the growing needs of seniors in our community, spotlighting local businesses, and bridging the downtown and beach nightlife at the same time,” Buccellato said. “I think it’s going to be an amazing event because it marries the beach and the downtown. You’re going to get the best of both worlds in one
SAT. MARCH 29TH • 6PM - 11PM night.” Tickets are available for $20 in advance on the EventBrite website (www.eventbrite.com) under Hollywood Beachtown Hop or by calling 954-9669805, ext. 117. Tickets also can be purchased the day of the event for $25 at The Tipsy Boar, 1906 Harrison St., and Taco Beach Shack, 334 Arizona St. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

DOWNTOWN NEWS
City of Hollywood launches mobile app for Hollywood Trolley riders By Caron Conway The City of Hollywood is making public transportation more convenient than ever with its new free mobile app for smartphone users riding the Hollywood Trolley. The cutting-edge mobile app, TSO Mobile Hollywood Trolley, which is compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, allows users to take advantage of an entirely new redesigned mobile online tracker that takes trolley riders by the hand and guides them to their next destination. In addition, a free automated system in English, French and Spanish also lets those callers who are not smartphone-friendly know when the next trolley will arrive at a specific stop. The old-fashioned-style Hollywood Trolley allows visitors and residents alike to explore everything Hollywood has to offer, from cultural activities and much more in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district, to nature offerings on North Beach, to dining, shopping and recreation options on the central and south beaches. Features of the new mobile app include route schedules and trolley times, a real-time Trolley Tracker, an Automated Voice Interactive System (A.V.I.S.), detailed stop information, and user-friendly route maps that are constantly updating. Smartphone users can filter their search by selecting a specific stop number or route, find out the nearest stops to their current location
and learn what their best possible route is for any location by entering a complete address. Step-by-step directions include an easy-to-follow blue line. “I’m very excited about the new trolley app and other features,” said Kimberly Stefanski, Planning and Economic Development Coordinator for the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), which oversees the trolley program. “This provides a new level of service and technology for our riders.” The Hollywood Trolley is a convenient and affordable service designed to improve mobility, enhance the visitor experience, and ease parking demand and traffic congestion. The trolley departs approximately every 30 minutes from more than a dozen downtown and beach stops, operating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The trolley fare is $1 per person per ride (exact change required) and is free for children ages 5 and younger. Trolley Coupon Ticket Books are available for $25 for 25 rides. To download the free app, search “Hollywood Trolley” or view the mobile version at hollywood.tsomobile.com. To access the Hollywood Trolley Automated System, call 954-399-7990. For more information on the Hollywood Trolley, visit www.visithollywoodfl.org/ trolley.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Hollywood dentist stresses the importance of preventative care versus disease care
By Dusty Garon In its purest sense, preventive dentistry is what you and your dentist do to prevent dental disease; the steps necessary to prevent the need for invasive dental treatment later on down the road. Dental disease is almost entirely preventable and oral health is just as important as the health of the rest of your body. Untreated dental disease can lead to serious health problems such as tooth loss, damage to bone or nerve, and infection. Infection from tooth disease can even spread to other parts of the body and in rare cases, can lead to death. “Preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health,” says Dr. Sperling of Dental Care Center of Hollywood, “I strive to provide dental health care versus disease care by focusing on thorough exams; checking the overall health of the patient’s teeth and gums, performing oral cancer exams, and taking x-rays when necessary. We also know that routine cleanings, flossing, sealants, and fluoride are all helpful in preventing dental disease.”
Hollywood Dentist, Dr. Hans Sperling is a second generation Dentist and grew up working very closely with his father, Dr. Thomas Sperling, who was his teacher and mentor. “Through my many years of practice, I have noticed an alarming trend. People often wait to go to the dentist when they have a problem because they have no insurance, or think the visit will be too costly,” says Dr. Sperling, “this can lead to tremendous out of pocket expense later on. Preventative care and routine visits should be affordable. It benefits the patient in the long run. Red light cameras are still a ‘go’ at busy intersections in Hollywood By David Volz No one likes to get a traffic ticket. Even though red light cameras are not popular with drivers, Hollywood City Commissioners support them. For some hurried Hollywood drivers, the flash of a camera means a $158 ticket in the mail for a red light violation. Commissioner Richard Blattner said he believes in the cameras. “During recent conversation with the Florida Department of Transportation, the speaker commented that it is difficult to change people’s behavior. I do believe that red light cameras have changed behavior. Accident rates provided by the Hollywood Police Department would show a reduction, but anecdotally,” said Blattner. “I think people are much more conscious of how they drive when approaching intersections. The fines are pretty stiff. The City has a budgeted line item for revenue, but the State Legislature wants to reduce the share of fines collected to the point that it soon could be revenue neutral to have the cameras.” Vice Mayor Patricia Asseff also supports red light cameras. “The red light cameras improve awareness about the importance of not running red lights. You can’t have a police officer at every intersection. We are for having these red light cameras for the safety of the people of Hollywood. One accident at an intersection could be a fatality,” she said. Commissioner Traci Callari is another in favor of red light cameras. Currently there are nine intersections in Hollywood that have red light cameras. The only camera located in an area where right turns are impermissible is Hollywood Boulevard/441 Eastbound. The cameras are operated by American Traffic Solutions. The goal of the program is not to raise money for the City, rather it is to improve public safety, according to Raelin Storey, spokesperson for Hollywood. Locations for the cameras include Sheridan Street/441, Hollywood Boulevard/441, Washington Street/411, Park Road/Sheridan Street, Federal Highway/ Pembroke Road, Pembroke Road at I-95 and Sheridan at I-95, AIA/Sheridan Street, Sheridan Street/Park Road and Sheridan
Street/46th Avenue. “We have seen a reduction in the number of fatalities at intersections in Hollywood,” said Storey. “The red light cameras are located at busy intersections where we have had a high incidence of police officer issued tickets and a high number of accidents.” In Fiscal Year 2013, Hollywood received a net revenue of $563,000 from the red light camera program. Data shows red-light running violations are on the decline over the course of the red light camera program in Hollywood. Since its inception, violations have tracked decidedly downward. The average, per-camera number of red-light running violations stood at 159 per month in February 2011, but feel to 118 a month as of December 2013, indicating a 26 percent decrease in violations issued. Throughout Florida, the red light camera program may be working. In the three years since the Mark Wandall Traffic Safety Act, the law covering red light cameras was passed the average number of citations issued per month per camera has decreased by 40 percent. In December, the Florida Department of Highway and Traffic Safety found that during 2013, 95 percent of vehicles issued a ticket for running a red light did not receive a second ticket for red light running. Also, a separate analysis released in December by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, an office of the National Highway Traffic Safety administration, shows that red-light running fatalities decreased 27 percent in Florida, from 83 fatalities in 2011 to 61 in 2012, outpacing the nation’s five percent decrease. The 22 lives saved amount to an economic savings to communities of more than $132 million. Even though local leaders like the red light cameras, there is discussion among
Florida legislators about reducing the amount of money cities can collect from the red light camera program. A new proposed House Bill 7005 would eliminate the $75 fee municipalities are currently authorized to retain. It would only allow municipalities, by ordinance, to impose a $25 surcharge to fund contractual agreements with manufacturers and vendors. Also, cities would not be able to increase the number of intersections covered by the cameras or move them to new locations. “The proposed legislation would allow the state to continue collecting money from the red light cameras but would not allow local governments to do so, said Storey. “We know that red light cameras have reduced the number of accidents at intersections.” Of the $158 collected from each violation, $70 shall be remitted to the Florida Department of Revenue for deposit into the General Revenue Fund and $10 shall be remitted to the Florida Department of Revenue for deposit into the Department of Health Emergency Medical Services Trust Fund. Also, $3 shall be remitted to the Florida Department of Revenue for deposit into the Brain and Spinal Cord Trust Fund and $75 shall be retained by the County or Municipality. If a driver receives a red light camera infraction, he or she can request a hearing from the City before the ticket becomes a uniform traffic citation. If the violation is upheld at the local level, the driver will assessed an additional $75 hearing fee on top of the $158 statutory penalty. A report by the Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability that was cited in a release by American Traffic solutions found that red light cameras reduce fatalities and injuries at intersections where they are in use. But it found that improved analysis is needed to better understand the contradictory, inconsistent and incomplete information related to rear-end and side-angle crash data. There will be more discussion on red light cameras.

Local pianist shares story of recovery after loss of arm in auto accident whether his arm could be successfully attached. His friend Rueben Cuertas strongly advocated and argued strongly in favour of surgery to do just that. Hollywood plastic surgeon Dr. Jeffrey C. Uecker took over and after six hours of intense surgery his arm was re-attached. A fixation device was secured to keep the fractured bones stabilized and in alignment. He wore this device until it was removed on April 23, 2005. On June 15, 2005 he was able, in some small way, to move my index finger. “Luck was with me as Dr. Uueker studied medicine at Harvard and due to the unique aspect of my case, it was arranged for me to be placed in
the continued care of Dr. Jupiter at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston,” said Sousa. More procedures will be required over time in an effort to bring his arm and hand back to a state of near normal functionality. here are important realities every American must know about long-term care. Longterm care is more expensive than most people think. And, most importantly, the cost of care is usually paid for out of savings and income. About 70 percent of people turning 65 can expect to need some kind of long-term care as they age. A number of public programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, may help pay for some long-term care services under certain circumstances. However, each program has specific rules about what services are covered, how long you can receive benefits, whether or not you qualify for benefits, and how much you have to pay in out-of-pocket costs. To accurately plan for your long-term care needs, it is very important to know the facts about what may or may not be covered.
24
MARCH 2014
Medicare focuses on acute care costs
Medicare covers medically necessary care and focuses on medical acute care, such as doctor visits, drugs and hospital stays. If very specific conditions are met, Medicare will help pay for all or a portion of a short stay in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care or home health care. Medicare does not cover custodial long-term care services. These services and supports help people perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) that are non-medical, such as getting in and out of bed, walking, bathing, dressing, eating, and bowel and bladder management.
Medicaid only available if income and assets are low enough
Medicaid is a joint federal and state government program that helps people with low income and assets pay for some or all of their health care bills. It covers medical care, long-term care services in nursing homes and long-term care services provided at home. Rules about who is eligible for Medicaid benefits and what services are covered are based on federal requirements, but states have considerable leeway in how they operate their programs. To be eligible for Medicaid, you must meet certain requirements, including having income and assets that do not exceed the levels used by your state. The Medicaid eligibility process considers the value of your home to make sure it is under the state set limit, your assets and your income. Documentation from your financial institutional “looking back five years will be required. Once your state determines you are financially eligible for Medicaid, the state will conduct a functional assessment to determine whether you are disabled enough to qualify for long-term care services. Your state Medicaid Assistance office is the best source for information about how to qualify for Medicaid in your state and if you qualify for long-term care services. If you receive Medicaid coverage for long-term care services, federal law requires states to recover the amount Medicaid spent
on your behalf from your estate after you die. Most states recover the cost of long-term care services.
Paying out-of-pocket for care
If you have enough income and savings, you will need to pay for long-term care services on your own, from your incomes, savings and, possibly, the equity in your home. Many people believe wrongly the medical insurance or disability insurance they currently have will pay for all or much of their long-term care. In general, health insurance covers only very limited and specific types of long-term care. Disability policies serve to replace income and, as such, do not cover longterm care at all. Long-term care insurance is designed to cover
long-term services and supports. Policies reimburse policyholders a daily amount (up to a pre-selected limit) for services to assist them with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing or eating. You can then select a range of care options and benefits that allow you to get the services you need, where you need them. If you are in poor health or already receiving long-term care services, you may not qualify for longterm care insurance. For more information about additional methods of paying for long-term care, including reverse mortgages, annuities and trusts, visit www.longtermcare.gov.
Calculating the cost
Because there are many kinds of long-term care services and supports, there is a wide range of costs depending on the type of care needed, duration of care needed, provider you choose and where you live. Some average costs for long-term care in the United States (in 2010) were: n n n
$19 per hour for homemaker services $21 per hour for a home health aide $67 per day for services in an adult day health care center
n n n
$3,293 per month for care in an assisted living facility (for a one-bedroom unit) $205 per day or $6,235 per month for a semi-private room in a nursing home $229 per day or $6,965 per month for a private room in a nursing home
Calculate the cost of care in your area by visiting http://longtermcare.gov/costs-how-to-pay/costs-of-care-in-your-state/.

5 Lessons CrossFit Has Taught Me About Life
{
by Shondelle Solomon-Miles Body Transformation Coach Regardless of what you’ve heard, and how you feel, there is no denying that CrossFit has changed the landscape of the fitness industry in a profound way. To many ‘outside’ of the CrossFit world, it may appear that CrossFit is a cult of sadistic, obsessed, ‘jocks’ whose conversations delve as deep as callouses, competitions and back squats. In my experience, I know this inaccurate, but common, perception couldn’t be any further from the truth. In the 5 years I’ve been part of the CrossFit ‘universe, I’ve come to experience it not just as a means toward fitness, but a philosophy. CrossFit, at its most primal level, is a way of thinking, doing and being in the world that goes far beyond barbells, PR’s (personal records), leaderboards, and burpees. It is a philosophy that embraces courage, strength, community, failure, success, overcoming, ambition, kaizen, and most of all, self-growth and discovery. CrossFit is a ‘mindset’ that surpasses its warehouse walls, chalked up floors and fanatical followers. It has become for many, a physical expression of life; a life that seeks to live fearlessly, outside of the ‘box’ (no pun intended), and without limitation. While I certainly invite you to consider trying CrossFit, the purpose of this article is not to convince you that it is right for you, but rather to share my personal interpretation of the CrossFit philosophy and how it has enriched my life. 1: Become Comfortable with being Uncomfortable. I would argue that as human beings we all have an innate desire to grow. Without challenge, and the opportunity to surpass your perceived limitations, growth is stagnant. Millions of people want to lose weight, trim fat, eliminate disease and do things in life that their current level of fitness does not allow. Yet, very few are willing to do what it takes to achieve these goals. Many begin the process but once things become ‘uncomfortable’ the ‘buck’ stops there. More often than not, and without exaggeration, I’ve questioned my sanity during a CrossFit workout. I’ve asked: ‘Is this really worth it’? My answer is always a resounding: YES. Yes, it is uncomfortable, YES it ‘hurts’, YES I
More often than not, and without exaggeration, I’ve questioned my sanity during a CrossFit workout.” want to stop all the time, and YES it’s worth every moment of discomfort. It’s worth it because the struggle pales in comparison to the triumph. I’ve discovered that enduring shortterm ‘pain’ for long-term pleasure is usually worth it. One of my favorite quotes says: ‘If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you’. The CrossFit philosophy demands that if you want something you’ve got to work for it, not wish for it. 2: Embrace Failure Failure is an inevitable yet essential part of life. Yet somehow, we have been conditioned to equate failure with personal inadequacy. The irony is that avoiding failure does not guarantee success, but evades it. The CrossFit philosophy not only accepts failure, but demands it. We fail at finishing a workout, we fail ‘making’ a lift, we ‘fail’ at beating our personal records (PRs), we ‘fail’…we ‘fail’…and we fail some more. Yet, we return the next day to ‘fail’ again, because we know that ‘failing’ is part of the journey and is the pathway to change. Without the potential of failure, there is no possibility of reward, without reward there is no satisfaction, and without satisfaction, there is no joy. Sometimes I will fail and sometimes I will succeed, and both are equally valuable. For me, CrossFit affirms the philosophy that it is the fear of failure and not failure itself that holds us back. 3: Community is Sacred Life is hard…and so is CrossFit. However, what helps us get through the ‘valleys’ of life are community and support. It is our community that offers camaraderie and empathy when the ‘pain’ becomes too much to bear and giving up appears to be the only option. There is comfort in knowing that: ‘you are not alone’. Community is the foundation of the CrossFit philosophy, and one of the many reasons I attribute to its massive appeal and success. During a workout, when I don’t think I can take another breath or complete one more rep, there is always someone there to remind me that I can. CrossFit has instilled in me the belief that life is much easier and more meaningful when you can rely on your community. 4: You Become Better With Time and Experience The CrossFit philosophy values
and rewards commitment, discipline, consistency, and effort. With these values in place, I have discovered that progress is inevitable. In my experience, most people are NOT fit when they begin CrossFit. Yet, many people believe CrossFit is only for ‘hard-core’, ‘super- fit’ athletes because they are witness to the result and not the process. When I started CrossFit in 2009 I was not fit, I could not do ONE pull-up or run half a mile (and I made my living as a fitness coach)! No endeavor is mastered from the beginning. No matter your starting place, it takes time and consistent effort to progress. There was a time when running a mile was a BIG deal for me, today it’s a warm-up. I say this not to boast, but to make this point: just because you cannot do a pushup, speak German or dance salsa today, doesn’t mean that you never can. CrossFit isn’t any easier today than it was in 2009, I have just gotten better, and I believe that with time and consistent practice, anyone can get better at anything. 5: All that matters is ‘Now’ CrossFit has introduced me to the power of being present in every moment. Its philosophy has taught me, that it is not the ‘next repetition’ or the ‘next step’ that matter at all, but the experience I am having right now. There are not many moments in my day where I’m completely present. Usually, my mind wanders somewhere in the past and more often, to the future; what didn’t get done and what needs to get done. One moment just blends into the next without much conscious awareness. However, when I’m trying to get through a particularly challenging workout, as my muscles are burning, and I’m gasping for air, NOTHING matters but that moment. For a very brief time, life pauses and my mind rests. Ironically, there can be such stillness in these moments of ‘chaos’. I crave this ‘stillness’, perhaps we all do. For me, these moments are my therapy, my time to reconnect to my mission of continual selfimprovement and to appreciate the vitality and joy of being.

Hollywood Hills girls flag football team kicks off the season in the dark By David Volz The Hollywood Hills girls flag football team came together for a “moonlight madness” practice during the early morning hours of February 17. This was the first opportunity for the team to practice and memorable a way to inspire the team for the upcoming season.
“When I first heard about Moonlight Madness I thought, OK, our coach has finally lost his mind.”
PHOTOS BY DEBORAH CLARK
Coach Brandon Graham wanted to motivate the team for the upcoming season. “Pride is the word that keeps coming up for me about Moonlight Madness. I watched a group of girls that played with passion and enjoyed being around each other. And for a coach that was one of the best things I’ve seen from any of teams I’ve coached,” said Graham. “The girls had every reason in the world to excuse themselves from this, our administrators had every reason to tell us no, and their parents had every reason to say wait until Tuesday but so many people stepped up and supported this team that it made me proud to be a part of Hollywood Hills.”
He was pleased with the team’s first practice. “There’s a surreal feeling when you’re out on the field at that time and there is literally a moon outside. It’s almost like they couldn’t wait to step on the field but when they did we enjoyed listening to music during practice and really enjoyed each other’s company. I told them before practice that I had a lot of time to scream and yell this season but that tonight’s practice was about a memory and something they would always have long after high school. I also felt it important to invite parents and friends to the event, so while we competed in our regular practice drills (flag pulling, catching, agility) we also added a few relay races which were fun for all of us,” explained Graham. Kaitlin Travieso, freshman and receiver/ defensive back said, “The first time I heard about Moonlight Madness, I thought it would be a good way to kick off our season and to adapt as a team. I think it will be fun and an interesting start to our adventure for our season.” Jahmara Parris, a senior who places linebacker and center said, “I first thought that coach wouldn’t go through with this, but the more I thought about it I realized that it gives our team a different look and helps us stand out from the rest of the teams in Broward. I’ve
been on this team for 4 years and I’ve learned that we’re not like anyone else, we’re the Hollywood Hills Spartans.” Kaylin Moquete, a senior who plays receiver and defensive back said, “I think this is an amazing and unique opportunity to get some work in and its an opportunity to bond with the team and continue to work hard for our first official practice. It really helps because it shows the dedication and motivation this team has to reach our goal.” Dimitria Cleare, a junior who plays linebacker said, “When I first heard about Moonlight Madness I thought, OK, our coach has finally lost his mind. Then I realized what he was doing, he was making a point and saying that we’re here for a purpose this season.” Janice Solis, a senior who plays quarterback said, “I’ve never heard of this before, but when our coach suggested it I couldn’t wait to tell people we were doing it. I think it’s something that we’ll be able to remember and use as a bonding experience for the entire season.”

By David Volz Work is now underway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. When complete the airport will be able to handle more planes, gates and international flights as well as new shops and restaurants. The expansion of the South Runway is the largest project. It being widened and lengthened from 5,275 feet to 8,000 feet. It will be elevated over U.S.1 and the FEC railway. It will be substantially completed in September 2014 at a cost of $791 million. At that time, commercial airliners will be able
to land and takeoff on the South Runway but additional work will be done on the taxiway system. “This runway expansion will keep delays for passengers to a minimum,” said Allan Siegel, spokesperson for the airport. “The South Runway had been for commuter airplanes but now it will be able to handle large commercial jets. Having two runways will make the airport safer.” Terminal Four is also being redesigned and expanded. It will have 14 gates; it currently has ten. The concession area will be increased from about 2,100 square feet to

Airport expansion underway roughly 28,000 square feet and there will be more international gates. International customs are located in Terminal Four. A connector will be built from Terminal Four to Terminal Three making it easier for international passengers arriving at Terminal Three to get to customs. “This will mean we can have more international flights and we will have more room for concession space and restrooms,” said Siegel. The cost of construction at Terminal Four will be $450 million and it will be complete in 2018. The project will be done in two phases. The western phase is now underway but eventually the eastern phase will be completed. Also, terminals One, Two and Three will be modernized. They will get additional shops, restaurants, seating and bathrooms. This project will be completed in 2017 at a cost of $300 million. Another project underway is Concourse A in Terminal One. This will be a third
concourse for Terminal One. There will be five new gates and 25 additional flights per day in addition to a large concession hall and a consolidated security checkpoint for all courses. This will be completed in 2017 at a cost of $150 million and add to Concourse B and C. There will a new in-line baggage handling system that will hold equipment for the examination of baggage for explosives. It will be an automated beltway between the check-in counters and the airplane ramps. It will cost $100 million to build. The Terminal Three phase will be completed by 2015 and the completion date for Terminal Four has not been determined at this time. These projects are being paid for by grants from the FAA and Florida Department of Transportation and passenger facility charges. Broward County taxpayers are not being asked to pay for the new construction, according to Siegel.

By Caron Conway F∙A∙C∙E Restaurant and Bar, a FrenchAmerican eatery in Downtown Hollywood, has been named a January 2014 Diners’ Choice winner by leading dining website OpenTable based on feedback from satisfied patrons. F∙A∙C∙E has been recognized with “Best Food,” “Best Ambiance” and “Best Overall” awards by OpenTable, which features nearly 5 million online restaurant reviews annually as well as mobile apps designed to help diners find the perfect table for any occasion at more than 30,000 establishments worldwide. Bouillabaisse, Pan-Seared Flounder and Beef Bourguignon; appetizers such as the signature Gravelax (house-cured Scottish salmon), Blue Crab Strudel and Chef’s Foie Gras; a variety of flatbreads; and desserts that include Chocolate Profiteroles and Crème Brûlée. F∙A∙C∙E features a full liquor bar as well as a wine bar. The Thomanns bring to F∙A∙C∙E a wealth of experience in both the front and the back of the house. Kimy Thomann started working in her family’s restaurant at age 21 and later managed the renowned Le Doobie’s near Paris’ famed Champs-Élysées, followed by Lausanne Palace in Switzerland, where she met
her future husband. Michel Thomann owned restaurants and nightclubs that included Le Memphis at Switzerland’s Crans-Montana, one of Europe’s most exclusive ski resorts. The couple, who married in June 2007, was inspired by their love for the United States to relocate to Hollywood and share their culinary experience by opening F∙A∙C∙E. “We looked for a location for our new restaurant in Miami and all over South Florida. Our central location is perfect and I just feel good there,” Kimy Thomann said of the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district. “We bring something different to Hollywood, and for me it’s more authentic than any other city around.” F∙A∙C∙E is open for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. A Chef’s Table, bar dining and outdoor patio dining are available, as are takeout and delivery service. F∙A∙C∙E features a Cigar Room and private party facilities for special occasions and corporate events. DJ music is provided from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends, with Happy Hour specials from 5 to 7 p.m. weekdays and Ladies Night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturdays. Hollywood wants to keep its CRAs By David Volz The City of Hollywood wants to keeps its two Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) programs. But the Broward County Commission wants to eventually eliminate city run CRAs and keep the tax money they generate. This would be done by not renewing the CRAs when they expire. Hollywood Vice Mayor Patricia Asseff said she is disappointed that the County Commission did not come to the cities that have CRAs and discuss the matter with them. “I think we need a better partnership with the County,” said Asseff “Why didn’t they call us and ask us our thoughts? They have the power and we don’t. I have a problem with that. They should have sat down and talked to us.” Asseff believes the Downtown Hollywood CRA and the Hollywood Beach CRA have both helped the city. She believes city run CRAs are good because they improve the areas in which they are located and they bring up the tax base. This brings money into Hollywood and Broward County. “Without the CRA’s we would not have had the money to fix the downtown area,” said Asseff. The beach area has also benefitted from the Beach CRA. Asseff said the city used CRA money to help small hotel owners improve their properties and to put pavers on streets at the beach and generally improve the area. “If it had not been for the CRA money, we would not have been able to make those improvements,” she said.
