For a couple of hours one recent Friday, it wasn’t business as usual at Hollywood Central Elementary. Teachers put “the three Rs” on hold temporarily while students got some “real world” lessons as part of the annual Career Day. Youngsters were introduced to a range of occupations at the April 25 event, which featured about two dozen speakers, including Hollywood Police officers, a husband-and-wife legal team, a dentist, a pharmacist, martial

One Career Day highlight was a presentation by parent Laura Schoeller, a jockey at Gulfstream Park racetrack in Hallandale Beach. Schoeller dressed in silks, showed a video of one of her races and demonstrated some moves on her training apparatus.

Hollywood Gazette’s general manager Jennifer Sandomir and administrative director Barbara Pellicano gave a presentation about the media to second- and third-graders. The students received their own personalized press passes and became “journalists for a day.” CAREERDAYcont.onpg.34
