For a couple of hours one recent Friday, it wasn’t business as usual at Hollywood Central Elementary. Teachers put “the three Rs” on hold temporarily while students got some “real world” lessons as part of the annual Career Day. Youngsters were introduced to a range of occupations at the April 25 event, which featured about two dozen speakers, including Hollywood Police officers, a husband-and-wife legal team, a dentist, a pharmacist, martial

One Career Day highlight was a presentation by parent Laura Schoeller, a jockey at Gulfstream Park racetrack in Hallandale Beach. Schoeller dressed in silks, showed a video of one of her races and demonstrated some moves on her training apparatus.
Hollywood Gazette’s general manager Jennifer Sandomir and administrative director Barbara Pellicano gave a presentation about the media to second- and third-graders. The students received their own personalized press passes and became “journalists for a day.” CAREERDAYcont.onpg.34

Mom and daughter business partnership creates unique custom jewelry, memories
Every month we receive scores of submissions for our ‘Baby of the Month’ feature. We filled this Mother’s Day issue with as many as we could into as a tribute to all proud Hollywood moms!
by Caron Conway Correspondent Hollywood Beach artist Ginger Zuckerman and her youngest child Lauren share not only a motherdaughter relationship and a close friendship, but also a business partnership. The talented twosome started Just Beachie, Inc., a home-based enterprise specializing in unique hand-beaded jewelry and other nature-inspired items, in January 2007. It would seem an unusual undertaking for Ginger, a former legal secretary, and Lauren, 24, who has a degree in psychology. But the mother-daughter team had two important interests in common: a longtime love of crafts and a desire for true professional fulfillment. Ginger Zuckerman decided to tap into her creative side after sending her last of five children off to college and retiring as legal secretary for her husband, tax attorney Ira L. Zuckerman. Ginger took her very first art class at Weston Community Center just five years ago and later joined the Jean Leighton Studio in Hollywood. Some of her watercolor paintings will be displayed at Hollywood City Hall beginning in July. Ginger currently is creating fish tank-style art pieces and collages that incorporate her watercolors with found beach objects. Lauren Zuckerman, who did some serious soul-searching after graduating from Florida State University, also has thrown herself wholeheartedly into the business. As Ginger put it, “When you have creative spirits in life, you’ve got to go with it.” Just Beachie’s online store features Ginger’s artwork, as well as sarongs inspired by her watercolors, Lauren’s photo greeting cards and the pair’s one-of-a-kind jewelry designs. Shortly after incorporating their new business, Ginger and Lauren started taking beading classes, and Lauren was a natural. Together, they

made more than 300 jewelry pieces in a two-month period. “We have sat around the table for 12, 14 hours at a time,” Ginger said. “We didn’t even realize we were still in our pajamas at 7 o’clock in the evening.” She said the response to Just Beachie’s jewelry collection – which is featured at art shows, private parties and a friend’s South Beach store – has been “amazing.” While starting a business can be stressful, especially in the current economic climate, Ginger and Lauren are enjoying sharing the

experience. “We’ve never had this kind of relationship before,” said Lauren. “It’s really good, actually. We get to spend a lot of time together.” Ginger said her legal background has given her a strong business sense, while Lauren, like so many of her generation, is extremely computer technology-savvy. “Her skills and my skills are so different,” Ginger said. “The combination of the both of us together makes one helluva team.” For more information on Just Beachie, call 954-547-5144 or visit www.justbeachie.com. The online store also features specialty wedding jewelry, as well as Foundation Heart Pendants that help support various causes, including breast cancer and autism research, homeless veterans and world hunger efforts.

Local moms ‘clothes the deal’ with infant couture and more by Caron Conway Correspondent Three Hollywood women are part of a growing wave of “mompreneurs” who are discovering that motherhood and career are not mutually exclusive enterprises. Caren Horvitz, stay-at-home mom to 13-month-old Gavin, started her own hip babywear line, Onesie Upon A Time, shortly before finding out she was pregnant. After her son was born, Horvitz found herself juggling the demands of new motherhood and a new business. She found that it is possible to nurture both her child and her creative spirit, thanks in part to networking with other moms. It was at the Mommies in Motion exercise program in Hollywood that Horvitz first met Nikki Kusens, another Hollywood mom with her own home-based children’s clothing business, Nu Luv, which offers various designer lines at affordable prices. One of those lines is now Onesie Upon A Time. Kusens started her business in January following the deaths of her beloved grandparents, Evelyn and Gus Ash, just months apart. She was working for a developer when her grandmother went into the hospital with a broken hip. As Ash’s condition deteriorated, Kusens left her job to be able to spend as much time with her grandmother as possible. Less than a week before she died, Ash suggested that she and her granddaughter start a vendingmachine business together. It would dispense “love and caring” and they

The new lunch alternatives will be initially offered at Everglades High School in Miramar, Driftwood Middle School in Hollywood and Eagle Point Elementary School in Weston. Introduced in response to student requests for more vegetarian lunch options, the Gardenburgers have no saturated fat, no trans fat, and no cholesterol. “Broward County Public Schools are dedicated to offering nutritious school lunches that help children and teens stay healthy and trim,” said Darlene Moppert, the District’s Program Manager, Nutrition Education & Training. “The new Gardenburger offers a tasty choice to students who want a healthy, meatless meal.” The launch of this new entrée is part of the District’s comprehensive effort to provide healthy food options to students. Local chiropractor serves celeb. clientele by Caron Conway Correspondent Hollywood chiropractor and acupuncturist Dr. Elliott Zvi’s career exemplifies the famous John Lennon quote: “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” For Zvi, who counts among his patients several celebrities in the entertainment and horseracing industries, the path to professional fulfillment started out in a totally different place, with some fortuitous twists and turns along the way. The South Florida native, who has called Hollywood home for the past 10 years, got his college degree in chemistry. He always wanted to be a doctor but ended up working in research for two years before becoming an environmental pollution control inspector. While driving to and from various hazardous sites and industrial facilities, Zvi started experiencing neck pain from turning his head in traffic. His sister happened to be dating a chiropractor at the time and suggested an office visit. “So he fixed me up, and I thought, ‘Wow, what a great profession,’” Zvi recalled. “‘I can use my hands to make people feel better.’” And so Zvi went back to school and became a chiropractor in 1999. While vacationing in Montego Bay, Jamaica, he visited a local chiropractor for an adjustment. As it turned out, the doctor was elderly and in poor health, and needed a break from his thriving practice. “I started working with him right then and there,” Zvi said. During his yearlong stint in Jamaica, he learned how to give racehorses adjustments, a skill that eventually would lead to human patients in the racing industry, including jockey Edgar Prado, who won the 2006 Kentucky Derby aboard the popular thoroughbred Barbaro. Back home, while working for another chiropractor, Zvi met a horse trainer

who introduced him to Calder Race Course executive Bobby Humphrey and, in turn, the area’s horseracing community. Three years ago, after building up a strong patient base through “mainly word of mouth and reputation,” Zvi opened his own practice, Hollywood Chiropractic & Acupunture, at 4625 Hollywood Blvd. He counts among his patients the members of powerhouse bands Aerosmith and Nickelback, popular children’s performers The Wiggles, and numerous trainers and well-known jockeys such as Prado and the legendary Jorge Chavez. For the past four years, Zvi has served as track chiropractor at both Calder and Gulfstream Park, giving adjustments and performing “kinesio strapping,” his own special taping technique. The procedure keeps jockeys’ joints and extremities secure during a race with flexible tape that does not inhibit movement. In addition to his roster of celebrity patients, Zvi treats “a lot of local Hollywood people, from kids all the way to Medicare.” He also incorporates acupuncture with his chiropractic care, mainly for relieving pain but also to treat addictions, hyperactivity and female problems. Fate may have played a part in Zvi’s professional journey, but in the end, “I worked really hard to build my career,” he said.

DOWNTOWN BUSINESS NEWS
Earth-friendly salon celebrates 1st anniversary April may be recognized as Earth Month, but environmental consciousness is a top priority every day of the year at Dovetail, an Aveda Concept Salon specializing in hair and nail care and other beauty treatments in Downtown Hollywood. Dovetail will celebrate its oneyear anniversary at 1930-C Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood on May 3rd. This successful Downtown Hollywood business offers Aveda’s signature services and entire line of high-performance, Earth-friendly products made of certified organic ingredients. Leading Dovetail’s team of beauty professionals is Linda Weinberger, a master stylist and master colorist with more than 25 years of experience. Linda’s husband Alan, an Aveda product expert, manages the salon. The Weinbergers, Hollywood residents for more than 15 years, chose the Harrison Street location because of the growth taking place in the Downtown District and its inviting ambiance. “It’s not a typical shopping mall environment,” Alan said. The Weinbergers hope other Earth-friendly businesses will follow Dovetail’s example. “By bringing the Aveda culture to Downtown, we hope to spur on other companies that are environmentally, socially and culturally responsible to this area,” said Alan. Aveda’s mission “to set an example for environmental leadership and responsibility” is reflected in its support of organic agriculture, ecological product packaging, Earth Month fund raising campaigns and various charitable contributions, as
well as manufacturing practices. This commitment to the environment is shared by Dovetail owners and operators who invite guests to stop by the salon for a complimentary consultation and relaxing cup of Aveda’s “Comforting Tea.” In addition to benefiting from quality products, outstanding service and the most up-to-date styles and treatments, clients have the satisfaction of knowing that their service dollars help support the environment. The “Guest Experience” at Dovetail enhances both the body and spirit in a relaxing atmosphere of hand-carved mahogany stations, soothing music and soft lighting. Among Dovetail’s Aveda signature
services are stress-relieving scalp massages, makeup touch-ups for women and facial grooming with hot towels for men, all complimentary with the salon experience. Guests also are welcome to sample Aveda’s women’s and men’s hair products, skin and body care, and makeup and beauty products, all with pleasant aromas. Dovetail offers haircuts, color, highlights, ultratress™ hair extensions and maintenance, perms, facials, waxing, manicures and spa pedicures. Highly trained stylists also are happy to show guests how to achieve their new look at home. And for one week every two months, Dovetail will welcome guest stylist Gina Derry of the TLC network’s Ten Years Younger show. For more information on Dovetail, call 954-929-6123 or visit www.dovetailsalon.com.
Welcome to the Neighborhood, Harrison Café & Deli If the memory of stopping by the corner deli for a milehigh corned beef sandwich or a pastrami on rye makes your tastebuds water, you’re sure to enjoy Harrison Café & Deli. Ron Cohen, owner, says: “I’ve talked to a lot of people and everyone seemed to agree that what was missing in the Downtown District is a place that offers quality deli, with quick, in-and-out convenience.” 22
MAY 2008
Adding to the charm of this neighborhood deli is The Beatles images that adorn the interior, and the café-style, outdoor seating for those who enjoy the feeling of dining alfresco. Every neighborhood needs a good deli, and now Downtown Hollywood has one. Ron, having grown up in Hollywood, wanted to bring a deli style café that is unlike the existing dining opportunities in Downtown
Hollywood. Harrison Café and Deli opened its doors in midMarch 2008 in the Harrison Court Building, 2028 Harrison Street. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Harrison Café and Deli is closed on Sunday. Call (954) 929-8979 for pickup or free delivery.
SLC’s Dance Factory has all the right moves From restless housewives to cardioworkout buffs to club-scene regulars, SLC’s Dance Factory in Downtown Hollywood offers something for just about everyone. Dance Factory owner and operator Susana La Cubana brings an exciting element to the Downtown arts and entertainment scene with a variety of hip classes that include club-ready Latin dance, hip-hop, extreme cardio and pole dancing, a hot new trend recently featured on Oprah. Ladies also can get their groove on at the monthly Housewife Recharge, featuring new dance moves and recipes and raw vegan refreshments, and in Stiletto Cardio classes, “the hottest and sexiest workout of the week.” From salsa to meringue, bachata to reggaeton, belly dancing to pole dancing, students work out every muscle imaginable, and all in heels. Before you hit the clubs in Downtown, take the Latin Crashcourse which teaches the basics and club-ready choreography for merengue, bachata and salsa, while Group Salsa Rueda Casino aims to get all of South Florida dancing in circles. Movement guru Susana La Cubana is dedicated to bringing out her students’ inner dancer. “I’m going to teach you the foundation so that the next time you hear music, you can dance,” she said. Beginning in May, kids ages 6 to 13 can “learn the moves, learn the culture, learn the dance” in the Youth Dance Explosion program. Authentic and original quince choreographies also are offered in the comfort of the studio. The dress exhibit, curated through the People’s Princess Charitable Foundation (PPCF), runs from May 5
through May 11 in the hotel ballroom and is open from 2 p.m. – 9 p.m. on May 5, 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. May 6-9 and 11 and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on May 10. Admission is free for Player’s Club members and $10 for non-members that will benefit The People’s Princess Charitable Foundation, Inc. Tickets
can be purchased at the entrance to the ballroom. Among the gowns to be showcased are several by designer Catherine Walker including a champagne-colored, glass beaded shift; a long, beaded evening dress in champagne silk and lace; and a nautical evening dress in
navy blue silk crepe. Two other dresses in the collection were worn at Christie’s private parties, and another, a heavilysequined halter dress. The exhibit has been viewed by over 3,000,000 people the world over. In 2001, the dresses were placed within the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection in Kensington Palace, the late Princess’ former home. The dresses continue the charity work which they started at the original Christie’s sale. “We are honored to play a key role in the preservation of Diana’s legacy. The Dresses for Humanity II exhibit is a beautiful and elegant reminder of a beloved philanthropic legend. We are proud to showcase this dress collection and keep the philanthropic journey alive along with our sister property in Tampa,” said Phil Madow, president of the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood.
To complement this regal display, several never-before-seen legendary “royal” rock memorabilia has been obtained from the Hard Rock vault in Orlando, Fla. for exhibit during this special engagement. British rock memorabilia from Knighted performers Sir Eric Clapton, Sir Elton John, and Sir Mick Jagger, The Who’s Keith Moon and Julian Lennon will be showcased.

Permanent dog beach approval granted by city commission
Glen Ann Radzai and Kasper the Weimaraner enjoy a day at Hollywood’s dog beach.
by Caron Conway Correspondent City officials have joined doglovers and their canine companions in giving the Hollywood Dog Beach an enthusiastic “paws up.” The trial recreation area that opened Aug. 31 at North Beach has become a permanent dog beach under an ordinance unanimously approved by city commissioners April 16. Well-mannered pooches are permitted on a 100-yard stretch of sand between Custer and Pershing streets, and its accompanying surf, Friday through Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. during Daylight Savings Time and from 3 to 7 p.m. in the winter. “The people are just absolutely delighted with the dog beach,” said
Helena Drori, president of Dog Beach of Hollywood (DBOH), an organization that fought for the canine recreation area for more than a year. “The dog beach has been run well and it really has been a success that’s been so positive for Hollywood.” Despite area residents’ initial concerns about potential safety, health and environmental hazards, fourlegged beachgoers and their human counterparts caused no real problems during the seven-month trial period, according to city staff. Of the 4,138 individual canine visits counted by mid-March, only three citations were issued to owners, for failing to leash their dogs in the parking area. Dog beach supporters said expanding the recreational outlets for dog-lovers would be a selling

point for tourists and those looking to buy property in a pet-friendly coastal community. The only other existing seaside exercise outlet for Broward residents and their pups is the 13-year-old Canine Beach on Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. During the trial period, the Hollywood Dog Beach cost just over $8,000 to run and generated close to $9,300 in revenue. DBOH paid for liability insurance and a beach ranger to patrol the area. Drori said the group, which encourages pet owners to act as “ambassadors of the dog beach,” mailed thousands of postcards as part of a “pet-iquette” educational campaign, and donated two large trash receptacles outfitted with doggy-waste bags and five “humorous and very effective” informational signs along Surf Road. City leaders praised the organization, which boasts more than 200 members, for its dedication in making the pilot program a success.
Drori, a regular at the Hollywood Dog Beach along with her 7-year-old Weimaraner, Ginger, said DBOH plans to purchase additional trash receptacles to help keep the surrounding beach area litter-free. She hopes her group’s efforts will encourage beachgoers to be responsible beyond the confines of the canine recreation area. “There’s no reason why we can’t make a difference,” Drori said. Dog beach weekend passes are $10. A six-month pass costs $30 for Hollywood residents and $60 for nonresidents. Canine beachgoers also must have a current rabies tag. Pet owners are required to clean up after their furry charges and keep them on a leash or under voice command inside the dog beach. Lola’s on Harrison a new beacon for discriminating diners When Lola’s on Harrison’s chef/ owner Michael Wagner made his entrepreneurial foray into restaurant ownership, he couldn’t have picked LAURABURDICK a more challenging time and location. SHERMAN Located in the DININGCOLUMN former Primanotte downtown Harrison Street locale near the Dixie Highway train tracks, the trendy eatery is virtually out of foot traffic range. Making matters riskier, Michael’s Kitchen -- a magnet for discriminating diners -- closed about a month after Lola’s opened. And to add insult to injury, the burgeoning downtown development pretty much came to a halt at the same time. But the success of the team at Lola’s gives credence to the adage that ‘tough times don’t last, but tough people do.’ You’ve got to credit the mild mannered, soft spoken, wellcredentialed former Tuscan chef with earning both local and national acclaim well in advance of Lola’s one year anniversary. Let’s face it, when a Hollywoodian makes the New York Times -- it’s big news. Since Lola’s is named after Wagner’s paternal grandmother, I figured what better way could there be to pay homage to mothers and grandmothers in the Mother’s Day month of May than to feature the namesake eatery. (Check out the photo of Lola in either the men’s or women’s bathroom). Speaking of mothers, I brought along my friend Donald who flew here to visit his own mother. A “good eater,” like me, Donald practically lives to eat, so I knew he’d be delighted. Liquor licenses are challenging and expensive, so Wagner made the most with his beer and wine license. Popular starters are sweet, and the now famous Saketini’s are no exception. We began with sake, fresh pineapple puree and juice blended Pineapple Passion Saketini ($8) and a 12 oz. bottle of Sea Dog, Wild Blueberry Wheat Ale ($5). Donald quickly slurped down the Saketini, and I enjoyed the mild sweetness and gentle flavor of the fruit ale. It’s noteworthy to mention here that general manager Heather Keenly hails 32

(954)927-9851 Hours: Lunch Tues-Fri. 1:30 – 3 pm Dinner 5 – 10 pm, Tues-Thur, & Sun 5 pm – 11 pm Fri. & Sat. Closed Mondays Free parking behind restaurant www.lolasonharrison.com from New York where beer is elevated to an upscale status, featured in varying sampling flights so brew aficionados can savor the nuances. Featuring a collection of American handcrafted and imported beers mostly ranging from $5 to $9, there are a few exceptions like the Oregon bred Rogue Ales Brewery, Imperial IPA ($20) or the same brewery’s Juniper Ale ($12) amongst a few others. Still in liquid mode, Donald downed the highly recommended oyster shooter ($5) in a chilled shot glass consisting of one fresh shucked oyster marinating in dry sake, ginger, citrus ponzu sauce, and cilantro. Not much for oysters, I happily drank some of the flavorful juice that was marvelously devoid of fishiness. However, I do enjoy seafood and we both found the Salmon Tartar ($10) to be a winner. Hand cut Chilean salmon brought to life with lemon vinaigrette, red topiko caviar, black sesame seeds, jalapeno chile oil, and complimented by cassava crackers, this dish is a delightful and less pricey version of tuna tartar. Next we sampled the lemonyflavored Caesar Salad with fork and knife romaine hearts (whole uncut leafs), shaved reggianito, complimented by white anchovies, sided by freshly baked Parmesan twists ($9). If you like a tart lemony Caesar, this is the dish for you. The Parmesan twists are so good; they could stand on their own. At chef’s suggestion, we decided to sample dinner entrees and we were both very pleased. I loved the Pan Roasted Turkey Tenderloin with caramelized Brussels sprouts, cream polenta, complimented by the pomegranate-sun
dried cherry gravy ($19). I found the turkey to be extraordinarily tender, moist and flavorful without screaming turkey. This is the perfect holiday dish and it’s offered at lunch as well. Donald preferred the Grilled Skirt Steak ($23) cooked in a homemade sweet based house steak sauce, similar to Peter Luger’s Steakhouse sauce, sided with Parmesan potatoes au gratin, sautéed broccoli. Wrapped in a coil like Floridian South American beefs, this dish offers a huge portion of flavorful meat. Those looking for summertime ‘Q’, will probably want to taste the tenderto-the-touch Coca-Cola barbecued beef short ribs coupled with buttermilk onion rings, and creamed corn with tarragon ($22). I do too, particularly from the press this lunch time entrée has received. If you try it first, let me know if it’s really as good as they say. But, appetites being what they are, we decided to move on to dessert and I’m glad we did. The Raspberry Crème Brulee ($6) not just garnered with fresh raspberries but also made with fresh raspberries was delightfully light and the fruit added an almost nutty flavor. I really enjoyed it but my all time favorite was the Chocolate Stout Cake with Chocolate Stout frosting and Chocolate Sauce ($7). Made from almost a full bottle of Rogue Ales Brewery, Chocolate Stout, Oregon 22 oz 6.0% ABV ($12), the cake has a rich chocolate flavor without being too sweet. Per chef’s suggestion, we washed the cake down with the namesake beer, and if I wasn’t such a coffeeholic,

the pairing would make sense. I was so impressed with the desserts that I suggested he offer a special dessert or after dinner menu for those who are wallet conscious. And, speaking of wallet consciousness, Lola’s has some helpful tricks. For one, they’re offering lunch which features the Coca Cola Q and other popular dishes, but at a lesser price than dinner. Additionally, Lola’s recently introduced their version of a ‘Sunset Dinner’, affectionately called the “Nightfall Dinner Menu”, served Tuesday through Sunday from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Priced to please, $35 gives you a choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert with complimentary wine, beer, Saketini, American coffee, iced tea or soda. With Mother’s Day fast upon us, it might be a good time to stroll down Harrison Street and see what all the brouhaha is all about.
