Downtown Hollywood martial arts school rewards students with scholarships
Eligible students must study Aikido and maintain a min. 3.5 G.P.A.
Aikido of South Florida’s “Make the Mark” Scholarship program is designed to reward students for excelling academically in high school as well as incentify other students to gain access to this unique opportunity by “Making the Mark.” Aikido of South Florida (ASF) is a traditional Japanese Martial Art School in Downtown Hollywood that has been established for over 25 years. Aikido is a non-competitive martial art that redirects the momentum of your opponent in order to neutralize the attack, regardless of the size of the assailant. The ASF Scholarship is available to all high school students in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach who are interested in studying the art of Aikido and who are able to attain and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA. Aikido of South Florida was founded by Stephanie Yap Sensei who holds a 6th degree black belt and the Menkyo Kaiden in Aiki-Ken and Aiki-Jo, awarded to her by the late Morihiro Saito Sensei, 9th dan. After graduating from the School of Engineering and Design in Miami, FL, Yap Sensei became a longterm uchideshi (live in apprentice) to Morihiro Saito Sensei, Japan, one of the highest ranking and most prestigious aikidoist in the world. This initial training has subsequently been enhanced by annual training sessions in Japan, accumulating numerous years spent living and training in Japan and establishing her position as the highest ranking female in the organization. Aikido of South Florida (ASF) recently teamed up with The Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (CKSF) to reward the latest winners of the organizations’ Aikido of South Florida Scholarship. Jenny Poon of the School for Advanced Studies in Kendall and Nicholas D’Agostino of Pembroke Pines Charter High School each won a $250 scholarship,

provided by ASF, and a Jr. Scholarship of 50% discount towards tuition at ASF for the next three months for demonstrating their knowledge of the principles, applications, rewards, and benefits of Aikido. The Jr. Scholarship will be sponsored by CKSF for the next three months and an additional three months if the students maintain a 3.5 GPA. During the month of March, high school students in Palm Beach, Broward,
and Miami-Dade counties were eligible to participate in the internet-based quiz scholarship based on their knowledge of Aikido. A total of 580 high school students applied and took the challenge. Like winners Poon and D’Agostino, the ten highest scoring participants were afforded Jr. Scholarships at ASF, paid for by CKSF for the next three months with an additional three months sponsored in part if they maintain a 3.5 GPA.
The Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (CKSF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization administered at Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education. In fact, the selected districts are saving millions of dollars as a result of their greening efforts. And the great thing is that the resources these honorees are using are available for free to all schools.” The school was confirmed from a pool of candidates voluntarily nominated by 32 state education agencies. The list of selectees includes 54 public schools and 10 private schools. A special recognition ceremony for awardees will occur on June 3rd in Washington, D.C. Hollywood Hills High Military Academy and McArthur High JROTC Programs ranked among the best units in the nation The Hollywood Hills High School Military Academy and McArthur High School JROTC programs were recently awarded the coveted Honor Unit with Distinction from the U.S. Army Cadet Command. In March, the schools received formal inspection from the U.S. Army and earned the Honor Unit with Distinction rating, ranking them among the very best units in the nation. The Honor Unit with Distinction, or Gold Star status, is the U.S. Army’s highest award given to the best high school JROTC units in the nation. This is obtained by showing excellence in drill and ceremony, cadet knowledge, vigorous inspections and an overall understanding in the JROTC program. Every third year, the Corps of Cadets undergoes a rigorous inspection process by an independent inspection team composed of both commissioned and non-commissioned personnel from the U. S. Army. Members of the U.S. Army’s 6th Brigade Headquarters located in Savannah, Georgia conducted the inspections, which included training documentation, cadet records, physical
fitness and drill and ceremony. Cadets were evaluated on their uniforms and drills and were asked questions about JROTC rules and guidelines. Cadets also were evaluated individually on how they performed the duties associated with their rank and job within the JROTC program. Both Hollywood Hills and McArthur JROTC programs exceeded the goal of 576 out of a possible 600 inspection total points and were designated as Honor Units with Distinction. The JROTC programs retain this designation for three years until their next scheduled formal inspection. JROTC programs receiving this distinction also quality to nominate one graduating senior each of the three years to compete for one of 20 nationwide reserved slots for appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Currently, the Broward County School District has over 7,000 students enrolled in JROTC in 29 high schools. Broward County Public Schools is the largest school district in the nation with JROTC in all of its traditional high schools.

Paradox set up shop March 28 at 1909 Harrison Street, Suite 112. Founded in February 2012, Paradox previously operated out of the home of co-founder Ambert Rodriguez, the company’s creative director. Hollywood Bread Building Garage now offers weekend public parking Downtown By Caron Conway Visitors to Downtown Hollywood now have an additional parking option to make their weekend excursions more convenient with the recent reopening of the Hollywood Bread Building garage on Young Circle. The seven-story, 350-space garage at 1747 Van Buren Street opened to the general public for the first time on March 10 for Hollywood's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival. "And we filled it," said Rob Snyder, the owner of Vizcaya Valet Services, Inc., a full-service parking management company based in Downtown Hollywood. The landmark Hollywood Bread Building, which is owned by downtownbased developer MG3, sits at a prime location across from the ArtsPark at Young Circle. "The garage has never been open to the public," Snyder said. Vizcaya Valet Services, which upgraded the parking facility with a fresh coat of paint and new lighting, offers selfparking on Fridays and Saturdays beginning at 6 p.m. On-site attendants accept the cashonly $7 flat rate and provide security. "If we find there's a need, we'll be open every day," said Snyder, whose Downtown Hollywood clients include Kindred Hospital, Mama Mia Italian Ristorante, La Vendetta restaurant and Perrone's Cucina Italiana. Snyder, a respiratory therapist who
previously owned a medical equipment company, got into parking management by chance following a conversation over lunch with Kindred Hospital's CEO, who happened to mention a need for additional parking. Coincidently, Snyder had worked as a parking valet for several years beginning in his teens at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami. "The next day, I was incorporated," Snyder recalled. "With new businesses opening, new construction, special events and the ArtPark, the parking demand continues to increase. The business continues to thrive." Vizcaya Valet Services specializes in garage and surface lot parking for area business customers as well as parking for special events and private parties. For more information, visit www.vizcayavalet.com. There is no charge for on-street downtown parking between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Free on-street parking is available in three-hour increments between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Garage parking is available for $1 per hour at the Municipal Garages located at 251 S. 20th Avenue (between Harrison Street and Van Buren Street) and 251 N. 19th Avenue (between Tyler Street and Polk Street). For more information on Downtown Hollywood, call the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-9242980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.

What do you love about living in Hollywood? What is there not to love about living in Hollywood... after all, we were named The “All American City”. I have to say, the one thing I love most about living in Hollywood is that everything is just a bike ride away such as our beautiful beaches, downtown, shopping and etc. I have lived in Hollywood since 2003 and plan on retiring here! Tell us a little about your family life. If it wasn’t for my family or my husband, I would be lost. They are my rock and they are what helps me to keep it together. As of now, no children... just 4-legged babies. (My two dogs, Bolero and Guinness). Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? I am Senior Loan Originator with Mortgage Masters, Inc and have been with them for over 11 years. As far as future career plans...the only thing I plan on is continued success. I love what I do so I
can’t imagine changing careers and not being a part of Real Estate. Choosing this profession has allowed me to not only meet and create amazing relationships but I also get to be a part of life changing moments for the families and individuals I work with. Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? Yes, I am involved with several nonprofit organizations. Currently, I am the President of the Greater Hollywood Junior Chamber (Jaycees), Board Member with the Hollywood Scholarship Foundation, American Cancer Society- Relay Hollywood Operations Chair. Each of these organizations play a vital role within our community whether it be creating and guiding future community leaders, sending a student to college or being a part of the fight against cancer. I have to say the most fulfilling aspect of working with these Nonprofits is being a part of the change they create! What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and

volunteering in your community? How do you stay grounded and balanced? Patience! Learn to accept it will never be perfect so creating a balance from leaning on your support group whether it be a spouse, friend, family or significant other will make all the difference because at the end of the day, you can’t do it all on your own. What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood? Without a doubt, the business sector.... Hollywood needs to become more business friendly while also creating initiatives in attracting new businesses. In effort to foster this change, I sit on the board for the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce as well as sitting on various committees within the Chamber. What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood? Hands-down riding our bikes to the beach. Usually every Sunday you will find us on the broadwalk having lunch and enjoying the beautiful beach.

Unlike the reality TV stars on Bravo’s pop sensation ‘The Real Housewives’ series, these women have no time for drama. Instead they are active role models for their community, shaping the future of Hollywood with their influence and involvement. Hollywood Gazette caught up with the following leading ladies, nominated last month by our readers. Meet Hollywood Gazette’s 2013 “Real Housewives of Hollywood.”
REAL HOUSEWIVES
Tell us a little about your family life. I have one daughter her name is Chiquita and two very sweet grandchildren Devin Jackson, 13 and Devine Jackson, 9. My grandchildren have been volunteering their time in the Hollywood area, since the age of 4. Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? Since 1982, my career plans have been taken care of my community social needs. My future plans are to work on my retirement, and enjoy my family more.
Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? In 2004, I created Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. (CEC), a non-profit organization to help enhance the Washington Park community. I have volunteered for the Hollywood Woman’s Club, Hollywood Jaycees, Relay for Life of Hollywood, Parks & Recreation Cultural Arts, Hollywood Boys Club, Coalition for a Healthy South Florida - Memorial Health Care System, Washington Park Homeowners Association, several churches and various communities events. I volunteer because I saw a need. The most fulfilling aspect of my role is seeing the impact of our volunteers sharing of their time and talent to give back to. We have over two hundred volunteers throughout the year the resources they bring is critical and important to our success and the City as a whole. I couldn’t do what I do without them. What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and volunteering in your community? How do you stay grounded and balanced? The most important thing is to stay connected to your family, stay in love, and committed to each other. I am who I am, but not
better or greater than anyone else. I love the Lord and respect others no matter your statue. My husband Ulyses is my best friend, he was the one that encourages me to get involved and when I wanted to quit, he encourages me to not give up. What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? In my opinion, the city needs to come back and work on having a better relationship with the residents. This is so important to people that live here and volunteer their precious time to Hollywood. Every community is different and we all have worked long and hard in our communities. I am working on my own leadership skills and the development of new future leaders. What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood? My family volunteers their time 365 days of the year and our leisure time are spent together, watching TV.

What do you love about living in Hollywood? How long have you lived in the City? In 1982, we moved our family here. My husband (Ulyses) and I are proud to live in Hollywood, but this was not always the case. The Washington Park area had decayed from years of illegal drug sales, criminal activity, and lack of a good working relationship with the City and a stronger community involvement. With the various departments of the City support and Memorial Healthcare System, we all came together to work for a better community.

All the Frills Bouquet Feminine and full of color, this bouquet is perfect to wow any Mom in your life!
What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood? As a business owner and local resident, I would like to see more involvement from other business owners in the local events such as grand openings, fundraising, DHBA meetings and City Hall meetings. If we are all involved, we can improve the city together. Downtown Hollywood has improved a lot in the last few years, with the mural project, new art galleries and art-related stores give a note of fresh air to the area. But there is still room for improvement and will love to see more events similar to St. Patricks Day Parade, big events that bring new faces to the area who can fall in love with our beautiful city as we did one time!
How do you stay grounded and balanced? I always start by seeing what my main priority is in life, in my case it is my family and that is what keeps me grounded, if they are happy then, so am I. Staying positive and free of negative thoughts always helps to keep a clear mind of what I see for myself today and what new possibilities are there for me to create new projects that keep my life and business as happy as possible.

Tell us about your family life. I live with my fiance Luis and my son Armanddo. And since Beauty Of Wax is a family business I am very fortunate to have my mom, aunt, sister and daughter working with me everyday. I started Beauty of Wax from my living room when I found myself out of a job and with my family by my side we have grown to two locations. My son is now 18 years old and he is going to FSU to become a business attorney. My daughter Diana, is 26 years old and she manages, with the best customer service and organizational skills, both salons, the Hollywood location and the other one in Plantation, while working on her bachelors in business administration. Luis has always given me all the support and encouragement with all my projects, as well as help with our branding and marketing.
How are you involved in the community? We truly enjoy offering what ever we can to help out with any event or auctions that are always happening in Hollywood and benefiting the less fortunate. It is a blessing to make a difference in someone’s life and bring a smile to their face.We enjoy meeting new people who come and visit our business and get to meet our family. We are also involved with the Relay for life Presented by the American Cancer Society, Children in distress, Hollywood’s Women Club, Hollywood’s Rotary Club and we are always happy donating Gift Certificates to schools and other businesses in Hollywood for events with a good cause. And of course, our favorite, we attend every month Hollywood Gazette’s Party With a Purpose.

REAL HOUSEWIVES What do you love about living in Hollywood? How long have you lived in the City? I live 1 block south of the Hollywood border - but I am Hollywood all the way! My business is in Hollywood and has been for over 9 years now. I spend a lot of my professional and personal time here and I love OUR community. It is culturally up and coming and is diverse in its population as well as it’s architecture. I can appreciate the vibe I get when I am downtown and then the vacation I feel like I am on when I am at the beach only a few miles away. Tell us a little about your family life. Do you have children? If so, what are their names and ages? Once upon a time a great man, Michael, chose to marry me not once but twice. Did I mention he is smart too? Together we have an amazing child, Savannah, who will be 12 in July. We live with our two cats, Samson and Sierra and our dog Sable in a condo on the beach. We all work hard; Michael and I both own our own businesses, Savannah brings home the best grades and the pets work at destroying our house! It’s a great team. :) Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? My business, Muzart, has just celebrated it’s 12th year teaching and supporting Creative Arts Programs in our local and neighboring communities. We offer a one of kind approach to teaching as well as services and programs for the entire

family. I plan on continuing what I started 12 years ago and taking Muzart to the next level of availability. I believe that art, music and movement should be a thread in every household but so many of us think it is only for the “talented”. I am determined to change that way of thinking by keeping the quality of programming integral and still creating an easily accessible and trendy outlet to learn and enjoy in. Whether it’s a canvas party with wine and cheese, a community event showcasing dance or an accelerated class in painting, all levels are welcome and progress will always be made. It is not only about the product, it is about the process. Simply put - we are bringing ARTSY back! Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? Muzart takes up a lot of my time, however, my mission statement doesn’t stop on my website. I am an advocate of the arts in every form of the definition. I volunteer to organize and work events at our local schools, I have held workshops with public school teachers on how to teach art on a budget, and I am very involved in supporting our local community happenings. If it is about the arts, I am passionate about supporting in any way I can. I enjoy showing up and even when there isn’t enough time in the week - I try to find a way. This is what I do and what I have chosen as my path. At times it is as simple as being a warm body in the room of an event but I know that I made a difference by supporting something that I believe in. It is not only professional for me to advocate for the arts, it is very personal. What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and volunteering in your community? My best advice would be not to think that because we are women we can do it all. We may be expected to, and we may be able to multi task more than that other species, but we can not do it ALL. There are just not enough hours in the day! I know what I can handle and then I of course I try to do more than that. So forgiveness of myself when I don’t get it all done really works for me. Knowing that I tried to get 10 things done and accomplished 8 is still just that - an accomplishment. Keeping things balanced is a challenge because it would mean everything in my life would have to get even attention. Since each day is different I’ve concluded that a more realistic expectation
to myself would be to treat the relationships and issues in my life like bank accounts. I deposit and withdraw. I know that if I make a deposit, my account with someone will look prosperous and if I don’t it may end up in the red. I try my best to keep consistent and usually do, but sometimes one account my need more attention than another. In those cases, I just shift gears. In the end it all works out and if it doesn’t then I go to my wine deposits and make a withdraw! I am also not afraid to ask for help from my family and friends. That is the beauty of supporting one another. I’ve learned that asking does not translate into weakness and that my friends and family need me too. That part of the process makes me vulnerable and ultimately keeps me grounded. What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? My answer to this question is two-fold and ties into one another. On one hand I think that the arts and cultural ties to our city can use improvement but I also believe that we are headed in the right direction. On the other hand I think that more of the local downtown business owners can step out of their box and reevaluate how they are contributing to our community happenings. We encompass what the city vibe feels like when someone patrons our downtown and if we are united with goals for driving traffic to the area and not just our own entity, change can happen. My business has been here for over 9 years now and when I moved locations last summer I chose to plant myself in the heart of Downtown Hollywood rather than move to Aventura where I began 12 years ago. I did this for a reason. I am here to help drive traffic to OUR downtown and to help improve the creative energy in this city. I am looking to work with my local businesses to do so because there is art in everything we do and if we rally together we will be stronger. There is a lot work to be done and I have already rolled up my sleeves.

What do you love about living in Hollywood? How long have you lived in the City? I’ve lived in Hollywood for over 30 years, since my family and I moved here from Israel. I’ve always liked that the city enables residents to enjoy both an urban and suburban lifestyle. Downtown Hollywood has a unique energy with its wonderful restaurants and art venues. I love that we’re also so close to Miami, which is a true international city. Sometimes, however, I just want to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of suburbia. Hollywood is great for that, too. Tell us a little about your family life. Do you have children? If so, what are their names and ages? My husband, Evan, and I have two children. Ethan is 13 and Ben is 9. We live like so many other families – always on the run. It seems like when I’m not working, I’m taking the kids to music lessons, soccer practices, soccer games, or supervising their homework. We try to savor our weekends as much as we can because it’s the one part of the week we can all be together and enjoy each other’s company. I am fortunate to have my mother as well as my sister and brother and their families nearby. Tell us about your professional life, and what are your career plans for the future? Being the principal of Hollywood Hills Elementary School is a challenging and rewarding job. My day begins early and often ends late. The best part of the job is the students. Our school is fortunate in that we have very talented and dedicated teachers and staff. Since I have been the principal at this school, we have earned an “A” grade every year from the Florida Department of Education. We also have wonderful and supportive parents who contribute to an enriching educational environment. I am very fortunate that I truly love my job. I know that my work makes an impact on children and our community. In my 24 years in education I have received many letters from former students thanking me for what I have done for them. There is no job more satisfying than mine. Are you involved in any nonprofit work in the community? I’d like to think that I give back to the community every day through my work. We have made community service a hallmark of Hollywood Hills Elementary School. I’ve established programs in which our students engage in monthly service projects, such as organizing food collection for the Kiwanis Club and Feeding South Florida, or collecting books and used cell phones for Women in Distress. Additionally, our students and

PTA have been involved with the Hollywood Relay for Life for the past several years. I’m proud that both our students and the community have benefited from these programs. What advice can you offer women juggling careers, raising a family and volunteering in your community? How do you stay grounded and balanced? There’s no doubt that juggling career and family is difficult, and everyone needs to find the balance that works best. The advice I would give to any career woman is to give everything your very best effort but make sure you appreciate the things that matter the most, particularly your children and the central role that you play in their lives. I also rely on my family for help and support. What do you think needs improvement in Hollywood, and what, if anything, are you doing to improve it? As an educator, I’m predisposed to focus on how I can improve our local schools. Broward County is fortunate to have a first-rate education system. I’ve been serving on the school system’s Senior Leadership Team, which has enabled me to see first-hand how many highly competent and dedicated educators are serving our community at the highest levels. I believe our school system will continue to improve over the coming years. What is your family’s favorite leisure activity in Hollywood? We enjoy the beach. The boardwalk is a wonderful place to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and get something to eat. We also enjoy the food trucks at the Arts Park in downtown Hollywood on Monday evenings.

NEWS FROM THE GREATER HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Teacher of the Year Luncheon One Symbol of Chamber’s Support of Education The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has a long tradition of supporting education in Broward County and its annual Teacher of the Year luncheon is an excellent example of that dedication. Scheduled for Friday, May 17th beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Orangebrook Country Club, this year’s event features keynote speaker Robert Runcie, Superintendent of Broward County Schools. Runcie was recently recognized by Governor Rick Scott and Florida Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett at a breakfast featuring more than 900 attendees where he presented a State of the County Address. The superintendent was praised for the positive changes he has brought to the school system and for the various initiatives he has already and plans to launch. The chamber is especially proud that teacher Eleanor Schwartz from Oakridge Elementary School was recently named Broward County’s Teacher of the Year!
In addition to celebrating Hollywood area teachers of the year at this luncheon, one of the chamber’s leads groups has also adopted an area school, helping to provide for its needs. And one of Leadership Hollywood’s groups has undertaken a community service project benefiting the Take Stock in Children program. Let’s not forget that – thanks to the chamber’s annual Grapes for Grades event, which raises money to help local high school seniors attend college – more than $250,000 has been donated to the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Foundation. “This chamber and its membership realize the importance of lending support to educational facilities in and around Hollywood,” explains Chamber CEO and Executive Director, Anne Hotte. “We consider it a very worthwhile investment in the future of Hollywood.” Tickets to the Teacher of the Year luncheon are available for $25 per person and may be purchased on the chamber’s website at www.hollywoodchamber.org.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Is Your Body ‘Beach Ready’?
Shondelle Solomon-Miles
Although summer in South Florida isn’t as eagerly welcomed as it is in most parts of the country, most people still want to look better on the beach. So, are you ready? Is your physique ready for those short shorts, tank tops, and near nude strolls on the beach?
So here are 21 of my favorite Summer Slim Down Tips: 1. You can never out exercise a bad diet. Start eating whole foods and stay away from junk now (remember that you can NEVER work off a caramel Frappuccino with 30 minutes on a treadmill). 2. When eating out make sure you ask the waiter to fill up your plate with two servings of veggies rather than the mandatory carb that comes along with it. 3. Always write down goals for yourself. Don’t type them. It feels more personal. 4. Make sure those goals are so out of this world that everyone will be looking at you like you are crazy. Shoot for the stars and you’ll end up in the clouds. It’s so cliche but true. 5. Take a before picture of yourself. Front, side and back. 6. Front load your carbs in the beginning of the day. On workout days you can have more than normal carbs. Non-workout days, skip the starchy carbs, especially at night. 7. Drink water. A dehydrated body will not lose fat. Half your body weight in ounces (150 Lbs = 75 oz of water daily). 8. To burn the most fat in the least amount of time, 99% of the time do full body circuit training workouts with little to no rest in between. 9. You will end up living up to the expectations of everyone else around you. Put yourself in the company of people who have achieved what you already want to achieve. 10. If you screw up (which you will eventually do) don’t beat yourself up for slipping up. Focus on the solution rather than the problem. 11. Thoughts equal things. Focus on what you want ie. Flat stomach, toned thighs etc. rather than what you don’t want ie. “I don’t want to get fat”, “I don’t want to eat badly” etc.. 12. Always aim for the “Afterburn effect”.
Afterburn happens when you end a day of exercise but an hour later you are still sweating from the workout. This is your metabolism on FIRE. This is done through different forms of circuit training, tabata training, etc. just like at boot camp. 13. Buy clothing that is a size or two down from what you normally wear. Make it your goal to fit into that piece of clothing in two months. 14. Fitness classes (Step classes, fake weight classes, tae-bo, Zumba classes, etc...) are fun but ineffective at helping you burn fat and achieve the body you want to achieve. If you take these classes they shouldn’t be your primary method of training IF you want to be tight and lean by the summer. 15. Yoga is awesome for developing an injury resistant body but horrible for fat loss. An average yoga class burns 130 calories. Sweeping your floor burns 130 calories. 16. Doing exercise with a friend is the best way to stick to a workout program. 17. If you do exercise with a friend, make sure they are AS SERIOUS AS YOU ARE in terms of achieving your goals. 18. PLEEEEAAASSSEEE! Don’t do long boring cardio. Do interval training. 19. Adopt a long term mindset when trying to achieve a goal. Nothing happens overnight. We live in an instant gratification society where we want things done FAST. Tip: Accuracy is speed. 20. Stop rationalizing. You rationalize and lie to yourself to justify your excuses. If getting in shape is important enough you will MAKE the time. 21. Stay outside of your comfort zone as much as you can. If you’re comfortable while working out, you’re still warming up! Intensity EQUALS results. Just focus on your goals, persevere and you’ll see results sooner than later. And if you need some help getting started or sticking to ‘it’ (hint: most people do, including me), then my team and I are ready to help you. Local cancer survivor seeks young-adult grant recipients After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 25 years old, Jamie Bendola went through two surgeries and treatment. Finding herself faced with a major financial burden, she saw the need for financial assistance for people dealing with cancer. Out of this she founded FMCancer. FMCancer, Inc. (FMC) is an art-based organization whose goal is to provide resources, raise cancer awareness and provide financial assistance to young adults dealing with cancer and cancer survivors. Their mission is to “provide hope, humor, resources and grants to help young adults both fight cancer and survive the wrath it can leave behind.” Bendola’s biggest concern with FMC is getting the word out and finding recipients
for the Emergency Financial Assistance program. Every other month, one young adult with cancer or young adult survivor is chosen to be the recipient of fundraising and financial assistance. To apply for assistance, email Grants@ FMCancer.org and submit an essay about yourself and what you need the money for, last year’s tax records and medical records showing diagnosis. Assistance is currently limited to Florida residents. For more information, call Jamie directly at (239) 440-6500 (e-mail Jamie@ FMCancer.org) or visit her website at www. FMCancer.org to access resources, purchase art or donate. -T.C.
