2012 election heats up: Hollywood to vote Nov. 6 On Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. there will be a General Municipal Election for Mayor and City Commissioners to Districts 1,2,3,4,5, and 6. Peter Hernandez, candidate for District 2 was omitted from the last issue. In Hollywood Gazette’s Facebook poll, the mayoral candidate slightly favored was incumbent Mayor Peter Bober at time of press on October 29.

Log on to Hollywood Gazette’s Facebook page to participate in the poll before the Nov. 6 election. The Commissioners from the even-numbered districts and the Mayor will be elected to a four year term. The Commissioners from the oddnumbered districts will be elected to a six year term. Local second grader learns to play baseball, in spite of visual impairment Lugiano or “Lugi” as he is affectionately referred to by his peers, is a local seven-year-old, second grader. The diminutive boy had always been a good student and an obedient son, and now he can add an additional title to his resume-he is a baseball player. What makes his new-found identity especially impressive is that Lugi was born blind and to this day functions with vision in just one eye. “When I first met him he was very shy and had very little experience… I wasn’t sure he would stick with it,” reflects Coach Peter Viola, “but after a week of working with him, I realized that this kid had a special drive and determination to learn the game.” By his second week of training, Lugi was throwing, catching and hitting Lugiano Valdez (second from right) with at such an improved level, that he was teammates (L-R) Aiden Abbot, Alan Degman and unanimously voted the “Player of the Dylan Hauver Week” by the Buddy Paine Academy (BPA) coaching staff. “Lugi set the example of what it character through baseball.” “Our goal takes to be successful, not just in baseball is to offer a program that benefits all kids, but in life,” commented Coach Pete. of all ages, all backgrounds and of all The “Player of the Week” award levels of experience,” comments the lifeis just one way that Coach Pete and his long teacher, former varsity high school staff at the Buddy Paine Academy hope coach, and Columbia University alumnus, to accomplish their mission of “building “baseball is a sport that I am passionate

Community petitions to create an IB Program at South Broward High BY CARON CONWAY | LEAD CORRESPONDENT A community movement to create an academically challenging International Baccalaureate Program at South Broward High School is rapidly gaining momentum as a way of retaining topachieving neighborhood students and improving the standing of a school that many parents say has been overlooked for too long.

Hollywood Lakes resident Rachel Warady Mazor, the mother of two elementary school students, is spearheading the effort, which started with casual discussions with a few friends about three years ago and is now being considered by Broward School District leaders as a viable option for South Broward High. Mazor became familiar with the International Baccalaureate Program, which is recognized by college admissions

officers as a rigorous and holistic experience that prepares highly motivated students for university study, through her younger brother, who graduated from the IB Program at Atlantic High School in Delray Beach. Mazor said her brother and his friends opted to attend a traditional public high school over a charter school or private school because of the IB Program, which helped them be accepted to good colleges and establish successful careers.

Broward County currently offers the IB Program, which encourages lifelong learning, compassion and multicultural understanding, at four high schools: as a magnet program at Miramar High, Boyd Anderson and Deerfield Beach High, and as an innovative program at Plantation High. Southeast Broward students who are interested in the IB Program must make at least a 35-minute drive, Mazor said, and offering the program at South Broward High would attract more high-achieving students who now seek academic challenges elsewhere, at magnet, charter or private schools. And since these students tend to be well-rounded, their enrollment at South Broward High also would enhance the school’s extracurricular programs and benefit the entire student body, Mazor said. “My husband and I are firm believers in a public school education. So it’s important to me as a resident to have a great high school,” said Mazor, a realtor. Toward this end, she and two Hollywood friends, Dominique Mayorga and Maria Harrison, initiated a grassroots effort to rally community support for an IB program at South Broward High. The movement was endorsed last January by then-principal Alan Strauss and in September by new principal Olayemi Awofadeju, who has experience with IB Programs at both the high school and middle school levels. “She was very excited to find out that there was a group of parents looking into this and support in the community,” Mazor said. She said Mayor Peter Bober has been an “amazing champion” of the cause, and Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie, at-large School Board Member Robin Bartleman and School Board Chair Ann Murray, who represents District 1, are all open to the idea of establishing an IB Program at South Broward High. Mazor said a final decision ultimately will come down to what type of special program would be both financially feasible and the “right fit” for South Broward High. “The School District is actively speaking to the principal and looking into what they can do for the school,” she said. For Mazor and her core group of a dozen or so resident, the best option would be the creation of an IB Program at South Broward High. To strengthen their position, they must prove there is solid community support for their cause before the principal makes an application to the School Board. By late October, Mazor’s group had collected about 450 signatures on a petition, with a goal of 1,000 signatures by Dec. 1. IB Program supporters are now spreading the word to residents west of Interstate 95 through speaking engagements, visibility at community events and a Facebook group. “It’s really gaining momentum and catching on the way we’ve wanted it to now,” Mazor said. “We really are working hard as a community.” To sign the online petition, join the open group on Facebook, Bring an IB Program to South Broward High School, or email IBintoSB@gmail.com for additional information.

A furry way to earn school community service hours The Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) is excited to announce teens can now earn their required high school community service hours by partnering with a parent and becoming a Teen Adoption Ambassador. The shelter’s new Adoption Ambassador Program, in conjunction with the ASPCA, is similar to foster care… but goes a step further. Adoption Ambassadors will provide temporary homes for select dogs, which will be spayed or neutered and given their preliminary vaccinations before arriving in their temporary homes. But unlike foster families, Ambassadors will help maximize their dogs’ availability and exposure to potential adopters by wearing bright orange “Adopt Me” vests while walking their companions in parks and other pet-friendly, highly visible public venues. As a Teen Ambassador, you will earn three hours for every day the dog is at your home. In addition, you can earn hours for walking your Ambassador Dog in public with their “Adopt Me” vest on; making and hanging signs; promoting your dog through social media; and making phone calls and sending emails to let people know you have a loving dog that needs a home! All food and supplies needed to care for the dog are provided to you. Once they have found the perfect home for their dog, Ambassadors will process the paperwork and present the adopting family with their new loving companion. As a further reward, they’ll know that as a result of their efforts, the dog will not have to spend another day at the shelter. If you can’t have a dog in your home but still want to help the Adoption Ambassador program, you can earn service hours by becoming a Teen Adoption Ambassador Advocate. You will spread the word about the program in your community by hanging posters, setting up an education table at places you are welcome, presenting to church and school groups and by using social media. Your goal will be to recruit people interested in becoming Adoption Ambassadors. The more families we have in the program, the more dogs we can help. Hollywood resident and cancer survivor raises over $7K for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Anita Lawson rides in Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo as part of Team in Training Program Hollywood resident and lymphoma cancer survivor, Anita Lawson, successfully rode in the 5th annual RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo on September 22, 2012, and was the top individual fund raiser, as part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT) sports charity training program. The bike race is a Tour de France Vegas Style and the only ride that takes you through THE STRIP and entire Las Vegas Valley from the heart of Sin City to the vistas of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and scenic trails near Lake Mead National Park. Out of a total of 18 participants that raised $51,872, Lawson was the top fund raiser raising $7,020.82 on her own. “I am grateful to all the TNT participants going the extra mile(s) to help fund a cure for blood cancers. You really do make a difference!” said Anita Lawson. In her early 50s, Lawson was diagnosed with a rare form

Anita Lawson successfully rode in the 5th annual RTC 2012 Viva Bike Vegas Gran Fondo, raising more money than any other participant. of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She started chemo in December 2003 and after five rounds of chemo, she was in partial remission that lasted for three years. Lawson first heard about TNT in the fall of 2004 and completed the Disney Half Marathon in 2005. She got hooked and stayed with TNT for the Virginia Beach Half Marathon in 2005 and 2006. After moving to Hollywood, Florida in 2007,

she learned that her lymphoma had come back and started on chemo in June 2007. Not letting this stop her, she was able to complete the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in 2008. Anita also completed the Homestead Speedway Century ride in October 2011. Anita is currently in remission and not on any kind of treatment and was able to complete the challenging 81-mile course of the Gran Fondo Bike Race. “Team In Training gives you all the tools you need to realize your goal, while you get the opportunity to do something for a great cause,” said Karen Ciely, Campaign Manager, Team In Training. TNT is the world’s largest endurance sports charity training program, gives professional coaching, alumni mentors and a web page for fundraising support. Local students to exhibit at ArtWalk on Nov. 17 By Caron Conway

Visitors to the next Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk on Saturday, November 17 will be treated to a local student exhibition inside Paul Miller Hair Studio at 2019 Hollywood Blvd. during the monthly event that features art exhibits, live painting, live entertainment and complimentary refreshments at downtown art galleries and participating businesses. About 20 student artists at South Broward High School will display their work from 7 to 10 p.m. at Paul Miller Hair

Ostheim, who encourages her students to exhibit their artwork on and off campus, developed an Advanced Placement Studio art program at South Broward High and started a National Art Honor Society chapter there. Her art program encompasses community-based art projects and mural painting, and she has developed community partnerships that include the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Hollywood City Commission and Hollywood Historical Society. Paul Miller has been donating exhibit space inside his hair salon to South Broward

Studio, a longtime ArtWalk participant and supporter of student artists’ efforts. Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie will make a special appearance at the salon during ArtWalk to recognize the accomplishments of the students and their teacher Susan Ostheim. Ostheim was selected as one of three finalists for Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year 2012 along with Hilary Fine, art teacher at Hollywood Academy of Arts and Science, and Arts Teacher of the Year Nina Zakrzewski, the theater director at Nova High in Davie.

High students for the past three years, since three young artists happened to visit his shop one afternoon. “They thought I have a cool place. I told them they could come by anytime. They stopped by every Saturday until they finally asked, ‘Can we do an art show here?’” Miller recalled. “They’re in college now and they stop by every once in a while to say hi or to get their hair done.” Miller said he’s very excited about South Broward’s art program and student artists, as well as the Downtown art scene, which in addition to the monthly ArtWalk series includes the Downtown Hollywood “Mural Project” (DHMP), numerous galleries and studios, and exhibits and programs at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and ArtsPark at Young Circle. “Art in general in Downtown Hollywood is something that’s appreciated, and it brings people here from all over,” Miller said. “I’m very passionate about Downtown Hollywood, and that’s why I participate in ArtWalk.” ArtWalk is free to the public and presented by the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) from 7 to 10 p.m. the third Saturday of every month. The event showcases the works of local, regional and international artists as well as musicians performing throughout the historic arts and entertainment district. Each month Downtown Hollywood Mural Project paints the town during ArtWalk with contemporary artists Luis Pinto, Jessy Nite, Ruben Ubeira and more. With live painting by South Florida’s most celebrated talents, enjoy the view, have a cocktail, dine with friends and listen to music. Start the evening at the Visitor Information Booth on Hollywood Boulevard at 20th Avenue in front of Anniversary Park to pick up a free guided map and flyers and coupons for specials at Downtown restaurants and retailers. Visitors to Paul Miller Hair Studio during the November ArtWalk will receive complimentary appetizers from Mama Mia Italian Ristorante as well as wine and soft drinks. YOUR LETTERS regarding district 4 commissioner race Dear Commissioner Blattner: I saw your ad in the EMERALD VOICE and wanted to wretch. When did the City of Hollywood Commission position become a full time job? If you all work full time why do we have a city manager? The previous administration whined about working 60-hours a week for the city, then described the ‘rubber chicken’ circuit that took up those 60-hours and pushed for a full time pay check. You and your fellow commissioners then gave the previous mayor her wish of a full time pay check to hit the ‘rubber chicken’ circuit. Not bad for a part time job as dictated by the City’s charter. Why do we have a city manager if you all work full time? RESTORED HOLLYWOOD’S FINANCIAL HEALTH: How did YOU do that? What specifically did you do to restore The City of Hollywood from the brink of disaster to, I do hope, a balanced budget? That is what you mean by a restored financial health, I gather. After what the previous two city managers have walked away with from my pocket, not to discount my fellow taxpayers, and the [who knows what happened to] funds that caused the mess The City of Hollywood

may very well still be in as I write, please elaborate what YOU did to restore The City’s financial health. I have not gone totally over the 2013 tax situation for The City. But I hazard you voted to hold the line on taxes. All taxes and taxes called fees, or whatever other euphemism a governmental body wants to name what they charge taxpayers, will be the same as 2012. Yes? FOCUSED ON HOLLYWOOD’S LONG-TERM FUTURE: Well, HOW? What are you focused on for our future? What do you see in for he City of Hollywood come 2022? Several years ago you came to one of our condo-meetings. You told us how excited you were that a new developer was about to undertake the emptiness now found at State Road 441 and Sheridan Street on the southwest corner. To date, it is still empty and I have not seen any movement therein to improve the emptiness. I have no clue who the candidate is or what he is about that is running against you. regarding proposed Parking garage structure on Nevada St. Dear Mr. Jorge Camejo, Re: My concerns for the Parking Garage construction proposal on Nevada Street What is the cost to demolish and build this modest 280 car parking garage structure funded by the taxpayers and what is the proposed return on investment? In light of the Doral area garage collapse how much more will have to be spent on fortifying the structure and is it cost effective for such a small structure. Since when is it okay to build a new structure taller than 2 to 3 stories on Hollywood beach if not pre-existing? How much green space do you plan on installing around this building in order to

beautify our street? Have you taken into consideration the increase in traffic which will result in bumper to bumper traffic for hours on end every day and weekends on our street? This will not be very pleasant for our clientele, who have been coming here for the past 39 years to vacation and relax. Have you considered the loss of intercostals views of our property all resulting in lowered property value for the Nevada and others on our street? There are several distressed properties south of Johnson Street (construction started and abandoned) on much larger lots providing the opportunity to construct a much larger parking structure which will serve as tremendously larger amount of cars. This will serve the community more appropriately and more cost effectively. By placing a garage on Nevada St., all I can expect is the crime rate to go up, faired tempers due to traffic etc… The current structure would serve well in many other uses as is negating demo costs as well as new construction costs. The Hollywood Green Team worked in conjunction with “Keep Broward Beautiful’s Beach Sweep” to hold a cigarette butt cleanup at Hollywood North Beach Park. Event partners included the American Lung Association, Broward Regional Health Planning Council’s TOUCH initiative, Broward County Health Department, City of Hollywood Department of Public Works, Tobacco-Free Partnership of Broward County, and Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT). During this cigarette butt cleanup held on Oct. 13, volunteers collected over 2,100 cigarette butts, 111 cigar filters, 8 lighters, 5 cigars, 3 cartons filled with cigarettes, 2 empty cigarette cartons, and 1 chewing tobacco wrapper. According to Matthew Competiello, Program Manager for the

American Lung Association, “The most amazing thing we collected were cartons filled with cigarettes. One even had a lighter inside. Ironically, it was a SWAT student that found the cartons and handed them to me. I don’t even think the student realizes that they saved a peer from an addiction today.” The cigarette butt cleanup was intended to make the public aware of the hazards posed by tobacco smoke exposure. Community partners are working on an initiative to expand the number of tobacco-free parks and beaches in Broward County, which will help to reduce the prevalence of secondhand smoke exposure and protect children and wildlife from tobacco litter. There are only 12 cities and municipalities in Broward County that have ordinances or resolutions designating their parks as tobacco free zones. Hollywood is one municipality

that currently does not have a policy limiting smoking in parks and on beaches. “Pride, passion and a bit of tenacity fostered 263 volunteers to pick up over 2,000 cigarette butts on that windy and rainy day. Hollywood Beach thanks all those who helped us,” said Bob Lieberman, an environmental activist. Monthly cigarette butt cleanups will take place the second Saturday of each month. Hurricane Sandy misses Florida, but still makes waves on Hollywood Beach

The Florida Division of Emergency Management urges Florida’s residents and visitors to use caution through the first week in November along Florida’s Atlantic Coast lingering effects from Hurricane Sandy generate a high risk of rip currents from Nassau south to Miami-Dade County. High winds will also generate a high risk of rip currents from Pinellas to Monroe County and a moderate risk from Franklin County west to Escambia on the Gulf Coast. “Lingering effects from Hurricane Sandy bring elevated risks of rip currents along many of Florida’s beaches this week,” said Amy Godsey, State Meteorologist for the Florida Division of Emergency Management. “It is important for all beachgoers to be aware of the rip current outlook for their area and always check the beach warning flags before entering the water.” It is important to remember that when red flags are flying, beachgoers should remain alert while visiting Florida’s beaches. A rip current is a narrow, powerful current of water that runs perpendicular to the beach, out into the ocean. These currents may extend 200 to 2,500 feet (61 to 762 meters) in length, but are typically less than 30 feet (9 meters) wide. Rip currents can often move at more than 5 miles per hour (8 kilometers per hour) and are not always identifiable to the average beachgoer. When at the beach: • Before you leave for the beach, check

• Know the meaning of and obey warnings represented by colored beach flags. • Different beaches may use different colors but a commonly used series include: • Double Red: Beach is closed to the public • Single Red: high hazard, e.g., strong surf or currents • Yellow: medium hazard • Green: Calm conditions although caution is still necessary • Purple: Flown with either Red or • Yellow: Dangerous marine life • Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist alongside these structures. • Pay especially close attention to children and persons who are elderly when at the beach. Even in shallow water, wave action can cause loss of footing. • Be cautious. Always assume rip currents are present even if you don’t see them. 2nd annual food drive to benefit Liberia The second annual food drive to benefit Liberia economic and social services and CEC Hollywood’s food banks for the needy is underway. Each month two food banks provide food and social services to many needy Hollywood families. “With the help of the community we are hoping to ensure that every needy family in Hollywood has plenty of food for the holidays,” explained community activist and volunteer Marty Jacobsen. “We are collecting canned and dry goods. Prior to joining Memorial, Fernandez was with Tenet Healthcare Systems in a variety of positions, including chief executive officer for Florida Medical Center and Hialeah Hospital. Throughout his career, Fernandez has worked in numerous leadership positions in healthcare. Team Up For Toys event set for Nov. 13 2012 Team Up For Toys Charity Trunk Show (with wine) promises to be the biggest yet Team Up For Toys recently announced that its 2012 Charity Trunk Show (with wine) event will take place on November 13, 2012 at Rudy’s Pub & Restaurant at the Hollywood Beach Golf and Country Club (1600 Johnson Street). Now in its fifth year, the annual toy drive and trunk show event that benefit Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital at Memorial in Hollywood, FL, is set to be larger than ever. As most great things do, Team Up For Toys started humbly as a personal endeavor by Candace Sheitelman when she asked friends and family to bring a toy for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in lieu of a gift for her son, Jake’s, first birthday. Fast forward five years and Team Up for Toys is now one of the largest community-driven toy donations the hospital receives each year. What’s more, the Charity Trunk Show event serves to bolster the gift of toys with financial donations. Last year’s trunk show (2011) raised nearly $10,000, part of which was utilized to purchase a mobile Wii Fun Center that is transported from room to room for children and their families to utilize during their hospital stay. “As the holiday season rolls around, every kid wants to be out having fun and spending time with their friends and family. Unfortunately, some children are in the hospital attempting to get well,” said Craig Cohen, Director of Sponsorship Development, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Foundation. “At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, we do our best to make our youngest patients feel a part of the celebrating. Supplying children with toys at the holidays is something we can all support. Donations of new, unwrapped toys make the givers and receivers so happy at what should be the happiest time of the year.” This year, the Team Up for Toys Charity Trunk Show (with wine) will offer attendees an opportunity to sell their gold, silver and platinumto A Golden Ticket for cash on the spot

i9 Sports is Changing the Game in Youth Sports

With so much recent attention to violence in professional sports, aggressive parental behavior in youth sports, girls excluded from playing “boys” sports and the win-at-all-costs attitudes in all sports, i9 Sports’ youth sports programs have found a fanatical following by emphasizing fun and good sportsmanship. In an i9 Sports league, the focus is on fun versus winning. A weekly award is given on each team, not to the MVP, but to the child who displays the best sportsmanship. A new sportsmanship value is taught each week, including listening, respect, positive attitude, best effort and fair play. Players also get quality instruction in skills in a safe and supportive environment. Certified coaches ensure the focus remains on the i9 Sports Core Principles – fun, safety, good sportsmanship, everybody plays and everybody wins. There are absolutely no tryouts or drafts. Each child receives equal playing time and has the opportunity to play every position. A child who has never had a chance to play key positions in other leagues will get that chance in an i9 Sports league. Greg Weinbrum is the Program Director of i9 Sports in Plantation, Davie, Cooper City and Hollywood. Weinbrum says “You should see the look on a kid’s face when you tell them they get to play quarterback. It’s

amazing what it does for their self-esteem.” Weinbrum was born and raised in Hollywood. He grew up playing on the same fields he now runs the leagues on. Weinbrum is focused on the important life lessons that can be learned through sports. “I know what it is like to have the inspiration of a coach,” says Weinbrum, “and those memorable moments that you can give to a child. In i9 Sports leagues, we are providing something that will be with a child for the rest of their life.” CONVENIENCE FOR PARENTS Parents enjoy complete convenience. Games are held once per week, on Saturdays or Sundays, with practices scheduled one hour before the game. The one-stop-shop website and mobile website offer easy registration, up-to-date schedules, news and more. Also, every effort is made to accommodate special requests for children to play on the same team with their siblings, friends or coaches. “Parents are usually very appreciative of

the convenience of i9 Sports leagues”, says Weinbrum, “only having to go to the field once a week gives parents more family time. It can be hard to get multiple kids to multiple practices and games throughout the week. In addition, parents don’t have to volunteer at the concession stand, so they actually get to watch their kids play!” Every i9 Sports parent signs a Parental Pledge, which commits them to be positive and encourage good sideline behavior. Parents also attend an orientation meeting where the program director discusses the i9 Sports Parental Pledge, league philosophy and expectations.

EVERYBODY PLAYS Each child gets equal playing time and certified coaches teach players skills necessary for success in the game and life. Every child plays, regardless of race, gender, religion, or ability level – no child will ever be excluded by a tryout, feel like they aren’t good enough because of a league draft, or cut from a team. i9 Sports takes, “Everybody Plays” to a whole new level. Currently, there are five children with cancer playing in i9 Sports programs across the country. They play as much as they can for as long as they can, even if it’s for just a few minutes. “Children battling cancer just want to feel like a regular kid without a sickness. Having the opportunity to play with the rest of the kids in an i9 Sports league gives them a sense of normalcy,” expressed Lisa Andrews, Development

Maggie Wiegandt named Vice-President of Oncology Services for Memorial Healthcare System

Wiegandt is now responsible for all Cancer Services at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital West, and all other peripheral sites throughout the Memorial Healthcare System Maggie Wiegandt was recently named to the position of Vice President of Oncology Services for Memorial Healthcare Systems. In her new role, Wiegandt is responsible for all cancer services at both Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Hospital West, as well as all other peripheral sites throughout Memorial Healthcare System. She is also responsible for the Memorial Cancer Institute’s financial performance and quality of care provided by the institute.

The Memorial Cancer Institute is accredited by the American College of Surgeons. At Memorial Hospital Miramar, she was responsible for ancillary and support services in addition to developing marketing programs to promote new lines of services using Internet technology. This year, Wiegandt joined the administrative team at Memorial Regional Hospital, where she has been instrumental in developing physician recruitment and business development initiatives. Wiegandt earned her Bachelor

of Science in Visual Disabilities/ Minors in Chemistry and Biology from Florida State University and a Master of Healthcare Administration/Master in Business Administration from the University of Houston.
