DOWNTOWN NEWS

Cinema Paradiso - Hollywood now open Downtown

By Caron Conway

Film fans have an exciting new option in Downtown Hollywood with the opening of Cinema Paradiso Hollywood, an art house theater at 2008 Hollywood Boulevard, on Oct. 19 for the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival that runs through Nov. 11. Cinema Paradiso - Hollywood will provide quality film programming and cultural events on a year-round basis in the heart of the historic downtown district, home to an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafés, art galleries, unique boutiques, specialty shops and live music venues in a pedestrian-friendly village environment. Cinema Paradiso - Hollywood is only Broward County’s second art house cinema. The original Fort Lauderdale-based Cinema Paradiso at 503 SE Sixth St. was founded in 1998, and the Broward County Film Society, also known as the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF), had been considering expanding the non-profit venue’s operations for several years. Supporters of the new theater say it is an ideal addition to the downtown arts, music and entertainment district, which is reviving the dinner-and-a-movie concept after a 17-year absence of a cinema. The 3,000-square-foot, 82-seat digital cinema includes a bar that by the end of the year will serve beer, wine and cocktails, and a concession stand featuring typical movie theater fare that will not compete with downtown eateries. FLIFF president and CEO Gregory von Hausch said he is amazed at the support from the Gregory von Hausch community, city officials and staff, and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), which will assist the OPENING NIGHT: Actress, television director and cinema through the annual purchase of 3,000 movie television producer Lia Thompson flanked by Alan and tickets – a cost of $30,000 a year – to be distributed to Sharon Koslow beach visitors for promotional purposes. The downtown location was chosen for “the documentaries and retro movies, as well as special events proximity of all the pedestrians, all of the restaurants and via satellite. Screenings of three to four different films the shops,” von Hausch said. “It’s a good environment per day will be offered from late morning to well into the for us to be part of, another element of what’s going on night. Von Hausch said musical performances and latethere with the arts and entertainment.” night comedy nights are also being considered. Cinema Paradiso - Hollywood will offer screenings “It’ll show things that you won’t see elsewhere, for of art, foreign and American independent films, HONESTY • INTEGRITY • ETHICAL • PROFESSIONAL

the most part,” he said. “Right now the sky’s the limit.” Cinema Paradiso - Hollywood opened its doors Oct. 19 with offerings from the 28th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival. Multiple daily screenings through Nov. 11 include features, documentaries and shorts from around the globe. “We promised the community it would get funded and done in time for our great Film Festival and guess what Hollywood? We did it!,” said a grateful Alan Koslow, FLIFF Chairman, after successfully spearheading the fundraising efforts. “I thank our loyal supporters, backers and community partners all for making it possible. It’s going to be a really terrific community and cultural gem of an asset for many, many years to come!” After the film festival closes, “We’ll go into our regular Cinema Paradiso programming,” von Hausch said. “It’ll be business as usual – but with our business, it’s always very unusual.” For more information on Cinema Paradiso Hollywood, call 954-525-3456 (FILM) or visit www.fliff. com. Hollywood CRA Districts make progress By David Volz The two Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) districts are moving along nicely. The Hollywood Beach CRA includes 293 acres. Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort at Johnson Street and AIA is going to become a major force in the development of the City. It will feature and island theme. It is expected to become an enormous destination for Hollywood Beach and a major turn in the reputation of the City. Starwood Capital is the major investor in the project and is investing $85 million in the project. The CRA is investing $23 million in tax increment revenue. Of that number $13 million will be for construction and $10 million will be for fixtures, furniture and equipment, according to Jorge Camejo, executive director of the Hollywood CRA. The Margaritaville project is well underway. At this time 1,000 piles have been completed. This means the foundation work is nearly done. The project will be complete in the fall of 2015 It will include 349 rooms and seven bars and restaurants, retail space, a wave ride and a garage with 1056 parking spaces. Also, the Hollywood Bandshell will be renovated and refaced.

Work is underway for the Downtown Hollywood CRA which includes 580 acres. There will be a cinema project at 2008 Hollywood Boulevard. Cinema Paradiso Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival will open a location there before the end of the year. This will bring first run movies to Hollywood. It is a nonprofit organization meant to bring arthouse movies to the City. Work is continuing on the U.S. One Corridor and the Dixie Highway Corridor. When complete this road development project will support downtown redevelopment and create more livable communities. It will mean more transit oriented and pedestrian and bicycle friendly areas, according to Raelin Storey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. On October 10, the Hollywood Beach Business Association held a meeting. It was an opportunity for people in the community to learn about developments taking place along the beach. There was discussion about the Margaritaville project and how it will benefit the City. A number of people expressed concern that the project would make it hard for people to visit existing businesses. They said that construction activities and parking issues would cause people to avoid the area. Some longtime local businesses would

NEWS FROM THE GREATER HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Scenes From Our Recent Breakfast Meeting The October Good Morning Hollywood Breakfast Meeting took place at the Crowne Plaza Hollywood Beach. Our keynote speaker was Eric Mendelson VP of HEICO Corporation, who gave an outstandingly inspirational talk on leadership and HEICO. HEICO’s culture and values perfectly exemplify what the ideal leadership needs to be in the 21st century. Our new Leadership class 38 – which was introduced to all 175 attendees that morning – was most impressed. The new Downtown Hollywood PNC Bank branch generously sponsored the event. We hope you enjoy these photos from the breakfast.

Grapes for Grades Raises $26,000 for Scholarship Fund Thanks to all who attended and donated towards the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s 11th Annual Grapes for Grades fundraiser held recently at the Hollywood Beach Marriott. More than $26,000 was raised that night to benefit the Hollywood Florida Scholarship Fund, which provides college scholarships to deserving seniors from Hollywood public high schools, helping to finance their pursuit of higher education. Special congratulations to John Lipka from E.H. Whitson Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical Services – a longtime sponsor of Grapes for Grades – for winning the 10-day cruise for two aboard the Oceanic Riviera! ‘En Plein Aire’ competition draws national artists to Downtown Hollywood Next one: Jan.18

Jennifer A. Sandomir PUBLISHER

Barbara Pellicano-Tisi ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR barbara@hollywoodgazette.com

Hollywood holds a special event for artists to participate in several times yearly, coinciding with its monthly thirdSaturday Artwalk. En Plein Aire Hollywood is a live 3- hour painting competition during which visual artists are invited to create a live scene from within the Downtown Hollywood area. A Pennsylvania artist recently took the challenge and emerged a two-time winner. Anni Matsick of State College is a children’s illustrator who discovered the contest when she first visited the city in March. She chose Montecristo Lounge as a subject after spotting it across from the Ramada Inn on Harrison Street where she was staying. When registering, Matsick told En Plein Aire coordinator Larry Joe Miller she is mainly a figure painter who enjoys drawing people and he said that could be an advantage. Her pencil and watercolor piece showing cigar smokers sitting outside the popular establishment took first prize of $150 in the Professional category. Matsick visited again during the October 19 competition and chose the Octopus Garden at 1942 Hollywood Boulevard as her subject, winning another first prize. From 1:00 til 4:00 pm with her easel set up on the sidewalk, people came by to see her work in progress, asking questions and making appreciative comments. The artist explained that she was inspired to use charcoal pencil and tones of blue-gray watercolor because of the subdued gray and blue of the stucco front and awning. As customers came and went they were added to the painting. Close to the end, a little girl stopped to peek at the art and was added to the composition, much to her delight. Matsick summarizes her works by saying, “I chose places where a lot of people gather, and used the place as a frame.” Back in her State College studio, Matsick creates works for picture books and other publications. Samples from her 30-year career in children’s illustration can be seen on her website at www. annimatsick.com. The next En Plein Aire Hollywood competition is set for January 18. The International Association of Fire Fighters will be recognizing military personnel for their service during WWII through present. Hollywood expands police force By David Volz The City Hollywood is recruiting more police officers. Hollywood is in the process of recruiting 28 more officers to fill existing vacancies it currently has on the police force. Hollywood has budgeted for 314 officers and now has 2.2 officers per 1,000 residents. In the future Hollywood would like to have 2.4 officers per 1,000 residents. To achieve this goal, Hollywood would have to expand its force by 25 additional police officers. The City would have to budget for these positions. This is a future goal. “We would like to increase the number of officers so that we are at full staff,” said Raelin Storey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. The 28 officer vacancies are for existing budgeted positions that we are short. We will fill those vacancies.” The positions have become open because officers retire or leave for other reasons such as better salary and benefits elsewhere. The new police contract now in place helps to restore some benefits and salary and puts Hollywood in middle of

pack when compared to other agencies in Broward, according to Storey. Over the last year, Hollywood hired 44 police personnel, the most ever hired in one year. The City processed 2,200 applications. The City of Hollywood is considering the implementation of a CCTV camera program in certain high crime areas. The first area that would be targeted would be the Federal Highway corridor. This is considered a high crime area. “Research shows that one camera is equivalent to ten officers. If the cameras are in key locations you are able to expand the eyes on the street. This will help us police smarter. Eventually we would like this to be a citywide program. We can use technology to be a force multiplier in coverage of the City,” said Storey. Also, Hollywood will be working with the Broward County School Board to have school resource officers patrol the city’s elementary schools. “There is a role for school resources officers in elementary schools. The school board is concerned about the violence in light of what has been happening around the nation,” said Storey.

THE LIGHTER SIDE

CrossFit’s Dirty Little Secret….Really? A few weeks ago an article came out in the Huffington Post titled: ‘CrossFit’s Dirty Secret’, and it discussed Rhabdomyolysis and its presence in Shondelle the CrossFit ‘world’ Solomon-Miles (Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of muscle fibers that leads to the release of muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is harmful to the kidney and can cause kidney damage). As if there weren’t enough misconceptions about CrossFit circulating mainstream media and conversation, (and a TV report on the same topic) people are now ‘running around’ scared’ thinking that a CrossFit workout could cause Rhabdo and they could die (I literally got three emails asking me about this). This is like asking: ‘If I go bowling, could I break my arm’. Uhh…yes…maybe, but you’ll probably have a better chance of winning this week’s Powerball!! In a nation where 2 out of 3 people are overweight or obese so we REALLY need another reason to discourage people from working out? Do we really need to instill MORE fear into a nation of people that spend more time in drive-thru lines

and glued to their couches than they do to moving their bodies? Afterall, most people are not at home sitting on the couch because they caught a bad case of Rhabdo! Unfortunately, this does not surprise me, from a society addicted to drama and negativity (don’t believe me, watch the news for 10 minutes). Whenever something or someone is in the spotlight for ‘too long’, the ‘haters’, the ‘skeptics’ the ‘naysayers’ will appear; those individuals who insist on spreading the myths that CrossFit is for people: who are already in shape or athletic, in the military, want to get hurt, and perhaps now, who want to contract Rhabdo. I’m not saying that it’s not necessary to take precautions and educate yourself on the potential risks and ‘side effects’ of any physical endeavor. Rhabdo does exist, and it VERY occasionally occurs in individuals who don’t listen to their bodies, exceed their physical limitations, and perhaps, improperly coached. However, I do not agree nor appreciate the sensationalizing and overdramatizing of its presence in the CrossFit world. CrossFit’s dirty little secret? Give me a BREAK!!!! Clearly, when you challenge your body and your physical limitations, and participate in intense activity, injury and harm is ALWAYS a possibility (By the way, this is why you have sign a waiver

when you join a ANY gym or participate in potentially dangerous physical activity) Yes, you can get hurt doing CrossFit just like you can get hurt playing tennis, basketball, roller blading or bungee jumping. This is why knowing your limitations, good coaching, sufficient knowledge and ‘muted’ egos are prerequisites for not only CrossFit, but any high intensity or potentially ‘risky’ endeavor. However, instead of focusing on the occasional occurences of Rhabdo that occur in the CF community each year (I’ve known one in my 4 and half years year of doing CrossFit) or the two people you know who hurt their back doing a CrossFit WOD, why not shift that focus on the hundreds of thousands of people around the world, like Ben Garcia, who are changing their bodies, their health and their lives using this methodology. Ben’s Testimonial: I just wanted to let you know how awesome your CrossFit 954 is. I have lost 34 lbs in 4 months since I began. I attended an event 3 weeks ago where 40+ close friends had competitive games at the park. I ended up being the top dog and it felt great , I had tons of compliments. Recently we had an 8 man tennis series and I went 18-0 to win the first place trophy. One more thing, I broke 200 in bowlling with a 209 for the first time ever and it was on our fourth game, when MONTHLY FEATURE

everyone else could barely walk down the lane a throw a ball. I felt invincible. I feel like I can do anything! ‘ Let’s focus on the fact that CrossFit is growing 350% annually and there are nearly 7,000 affiliate locations, which would NOT be the case if people were having more bad experiences than good ones. That would NOT be the case if more people were being injured than transformed. So here’s the bottom line. I’m not encouraging naiveté or going blindly into something that you know nothing about, do your research, know the risks, but beware of the HATERS! You will always find what you are looking for; ‘seek and you shall find’. If you’re looking to find the worst in something (or someone), or a reason NOT to do something, you WILL find it (Rhabdo, after all DOES exist). There are critics just as there are fans. However, I encourage you to focus more on the GOOD that something (or someone) can bring to your life!If the odds are that you stand a MUCH greater chance to benefit than to be harmed, I would argue, that’s a risk worth taking!

Public workshop presents plans for ‘Complete Street’ design for A1A from Hollywood Blvd. to Sheridan St. By David Volz Changes will be coming to State Road A1A in Hollywood over the next few years catering to the community as a whole instead of only cars. On October 15, a public workshop was held at the Hollywood Beach Marriott. The purpose was to offer a presentation on the State Road A1A Scenic Highway and to gather input from the public. People could learn about some of the different visions for improvements and changes along SR A1A in Hollywood. During the meeting, Jorge Camejo, executive director of the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) gave a presentation on potential improvements and beautifications to SR AIA from Hollywood Boulevard to Sheridan Street. Improvements would be consistent with the complete streets concept. This is a type of planning that is going into effect many communities as a way of having a more balanced approach to transportation and to make streets safer and more attractive. Incomplete streets – those designed with only cars in mind – limit transportation

choices by making walking, bicycling, and taking public transportation inconvenient, unattractive, and, too often, dangerous. Another important goal is to and to boost economic development, according to Manual Pila, program manager for the Hollywood CRA. “Among the possible improvements would be the widening of sidewalks, widening bike paths, reconfiguring traffic lanes, adding landscaping and crosswalks all along the corridor of A1A,” said Pila. The workshop included a slide presentation that showed how the concept could be tested over time. There will be more meetings before any major changes are considered. Planning work will include the Florida Department of Transportation, the City of Hollywood and Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization. Construction and landscaping work is not expected to begin until 2015. “This is the beginning of the process that will include several years of design and planning and many opportunities for the community to be involved,” said Pila. For more information, visit www. hollywoodpinescorridorproject.com.

There is no singular design prescription for Complete Streets; each one is unique and responds to its community context. A complete street may include: sidewalks, bike lanes (or wide paved shoulders), special bus lanes, comfortable and accessible public transportation stops, frequent and safe crossing opportunities, median islands, accessible pedestrian signals, curb extensions, narrower travel lanes, roundabouts, and more.
