1. What you should know about me. My fiancé and I are homeowners in Hollywood Lakes and live only a few blocks from the Hollywood Circle. We truly enjoy the Lakes and Hollywood Beach areas. I walk to Downtown Hollywood, and we ride bikes on the Beach Broadwalk. I have worked in hightechnology focusing on the advertising and publishing for 20 years. My world is composed of press releases, Google Search, banner ads, magazine ads and TV commercials. I want more technology companies to call Hollywood home. I want a Fry's Electronics on US-1, a book store, a comic and games shop, a cheese vendor Downtown. I want community Maker sheds set up on Dixie Highway. I want to attract more engineers, designers, cybersecurity experts and hot-shops. My goal would be to visit and call upon technology companies large and small from Florida, California, Texas. Especially South Florida. It doesn't matter if those companies are thinking of relocating... Yet. Read more at RickValdez.com. Friend me at facebook.com/rick.valdez to follow the

campaign. 2. What I will do for you. For the business community, I promise to keep taxes and fees low and ensure that no one business is favored over another. From the smallest ice cream store to the largest entertainment complex, the business environment will be a level playing field for all. For the residents of District 1, I promise to promote our neighborhood and to encourage family-friendly development along Federal Highway. For the City, I promise to promote Hollywood as the Silicon Beach of Florida. I will work to introduce our City as the premier location to set up shop. I am truly interested in the views of the civic leaders of Hollywood. Patient and polite, I will hear every visitor in the Council Chambers without interruption. I'll negotiate in good faith and weigh each argument fully. I'll work to ensure that the entire budget of $340 million is managed well. According the the City's own consultants, Hollywood has the highest property tax rate among Broward County cities. I will use my vote to hold that number down until Hollywood has the 'average' tax rate of Broward County. Not the lowest because we want to enjoy great schools and services. But never again, the highest. Art and Culture Center. She also is a graduate of Leadership Hollywood. The Asseff’s pride themselves on being a “homegrown” Hollywood family. Commissioner Asseff is married for more than 40 years to Dr. Abraham Asseff, a long-time practicing dentist on Hollywood Beach. They first lived in Hollywood Hills and have resided in the Hollywood Lakes neighborhood for more than 20 years. The Asseff’s three children were all born and raised in Hollywood and attended both Nativity Catholic Church and School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Commissioner Asseff has been a Realtor for more than 22 years. She currently works with Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate and specializes in the residential luxury home market. Patty is listed as the top 3 percent of all Coldwell Banker agents nationwide and in the top 100 in Florida.

Timothy Burton What you should know about me: I am excited about the opportunity to potentially serve and represent my community as a city commissioner. Being the eleventh child of thirteen siblings, I learned to treat others like I wanted to be treated, to share and to lend a helping hand. I developed an early true sense of community. I moved to South Florida twenty-six years ago. I met and married my wife of twenty-five years, the former Debra F. Howard. We gave birth to my son, Timothy Burton, Jr. and provided a home to Christopher Howard, my nephew. I am Vice-President of the Liberia Homeowner Civic Association; Executive Director for Eagle’s Wings Development

Corporation (job training and employment); Habitat of Humanity volunteer, former President of the Hallandale Community Development Corporation (built and financed 52 homes for first time home owners); and, member of Weed and Seed Steering Committee of the US Attorney General’s Office and Palm Community Action Coalition. What will I do for you: I firmly believe community begins at home. I bring dedication, tenacity and resolve to be an asset and make a difference in my community. I am in the community. Carol Lynn B. Kendall What you should know about me: I am a mother, a professional woman, a volunteer in civic, government, and environmental activities, a supporter of the arts, and, importantly, a concerned resident of District 2 and of Hollywood. A graduate of Goucher College, I was a small business owner (marketing and public relations) before becoming a stay-at-home-Mom to raise two sons. When they moved on, I furthered my education by attending graduate school at Boston University and held a position as a television producer and a lecturer at the University. My final educational stop was at the University of Richmond (Va.) where I received my law degree, before moving to downtown Hollywood and establishing a career as a family law and land use attorney. I am active in various professional organizations including the Broward County Bar Association, volunteering for its low cost lawyer referral service and its mentoring program I have served on the Board of Collier Audubon Society, the Shelter for Abused Women, and the Izaak Walton League. As a resident of South Florida for more than 30 years I am well acquainted with the issues unique to our community. I currently serve on the Hollywood’s Marine Advisory Committee. What will I do for you: Being a persistent voice for the residents of District 2 is the prime component of what is required as a Commissioner. Restoring the integrity of the neighborhoods that comprise

Ralph Kenol What you should know about me: I’m a husband and father of three year old and a newborn. I practice business and immigration law in an office on Harrison Street. I feel a real connection to the folks I see and work with every day. I appreciate the impact of the decisions of our city government from a variety of levels. From questions of quality of life as a father and husband, to the experiences of local business as an attorney, I get it. The decisions I will make as your commissioner will be about building a better Hollywood for families like

District 2 is my primary goal. The needs and concerns of District 2 have gone unanswered: inadequate street lighting, persistent drainage problems, residential streets being used as truck routes, increased police presence (Why isn’t the police substation on Federal Highway being manned?), deterioration and neglect of residential properties by absentee landlords, and finally I want to assist our local small businesses by looking at ways to improve signage to increase revenue. I intend to see these matters addressed. Supporting the revitalization of the Downtown Hollywood commercial corridor is another top priority. The Commission can no longer be so complacent about boarded up and empty storefronts. Bolstering the development of Hollywood’s waterfront and marine industries also must be emphasized. I have seen other communities that have revitalized their downtown areas and I will lead the effort to accomplish the same in Hollywood. Good management of your tax dollars is the third priority issue. The Commission seems to forget its “Your Money” they are spending. I want to re-evaluate City management to ensure responsibility.

Heidi O’Sheehan What you should know about me: The reason I serve in public office is because I love the City of Hollywood and I know that I have the knowledge, leadership skills and integrity to help lead our community. I have worked hard to serve our City and my District through some of the most challenging times this City has ever faced and I have done so with strength, diligence, and respect. I have given equal service to all; whether you are a resident, small business owner or multi-million dollar developer you receive the same assistance. I have been married for 25 years and have three children. I served for 20 years in the United States Army. Immediately after the attacks of 9-11 I served as the Officer in Charge of the South Area Command Emergency Operations Center, supervising over 1,500 soldiers serving from Palm Beach to Key West and managing contracts and property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I subsequently served as a Company Commander on a one year deployment to the Middle East. My military experience and training translate well to public office and I believe, coupled with my 16 years of community involvement, make me the most qualified candidate to serve as your Commissioner.

What will I do for you: I will continue to work hard and be fully prepared for every meeting and every vote. I will vote for what I believe to be in the best long term interests of Hollywood and I will not cave in to personal attacks or any other form of pressure. I will treat all people fairly, and listen to all input. I will search for balanced and reasonable solutions to the issues facing our city. I will conduct myself at all times with dignity, compassion and integrity. Budget- I will continue to advocate the responsible spending of your money. I will seek a balance in providing quality services and taking care of our employees, while being committed to lowering your taxes and fees. Property standards- I am committed to stricter enforcement and compliance of residential and commercial standards. I will advocate more capital projects such as road paving and sidewalk upgrades and installation. Schools- I will continue to work for and implement policies that grow and improve educational opportunities for Hollywood families. Development- I will support redevelopment that will enhance our city and expand our tax base; I will oppose projects that do not fit in with the character of our City.

If you want to keep in touch with our campaign, please check us out on facebook at facebook.com/ TraciforHollywood. City Commission, I won’t let politics keep us from doing what’s best for you, the residents. I want to maintain a family friendly environment, and provide incentives for businesses to come and stay in Hollywood. I also want to make sure our police and firefighters have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe. As your district Commissioner, I’ll fight for our neighborhood to receive it’s fair share of infrastructure improvements. I’ll always have an open door and open ears, and I’ll personally return every phone call and email I receive. Your City government should be working for YOU, and that’s what I intend to do as your Commissioner.

District 4 Candidates Richard Blattner What you should know about me: Born in Lima, Ohio. Graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Served in the US Army. Married to Bunny Blattner, who recently retired from the University School after 35 years. Two sons, David and Billy, and four grandchildren. We also consider Bobby Huen and his sister Barbara our children as well. Barbara and husband Jonathon have two children, Olivia and Violet and live in Houston. Elected to Hollywood Commission in 2007 to complete the balance of a term, and re-elected in 2008 to a full four year term. Chair of the YMCA of Broward County; Chair of the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization; member of the Broward Water Resources Advisory Board; represent Hollywood on the Broward County Enterprise Advisory Committee; volunteer at the Broward Outreach Committee. Member of Temple Solel. What will I do for you: I consider this a full time job, and my extra curricular activities (above) are an important way to be an advocate for the city, and to establish my leadership throughout Broward County. As such, I will continue to work hard for all the citizens of Hollywood. While we are elected from single member districts, I have always felt that

my responsibilities do not end at the District borders. While the official job description is that commissioners serve as both the legislative and judicial arms of the city, those functions are basically performed at public meetings. What happens between those is what is really important to me. And that is: responding to the concerns of residents regardless of where they live. When residents reach out to elected officials, it is often because they didn’t know where to turn, or were not satisfied with the answers they were given by staff and the system. I pride myself on understanding how the system works; who the problem solvers/players are; and how to get answers. It is very satisfying when I am able to provide the answers or solutions residents request. By the way, this sometimes requires going outside the city for answers; School Board, the County, Department of Transportation, etc. After a while, you get a reputation as a broker who is fair and honest, and has the interest of the residents and his city uppermost in his mind. I am proud of that. People often refer to me as the Voice of Reason on the Commission. That means I am well prepared, thoughtful, progressive, fair and honest. What a nice reputation to have.

Justin Serian What you should know about me: I’m running for City Commissioner because I want to create a Hollywood where future generations can thrive and succeed like never before. Having lived in Hollywood my entire life, the bond I share with this community has given me a unique ability to see Hollywood from both a long-term resident and a public servant viewpoint; understanding the needs of the city and its people. I am eager to meet with members of the Hollywood community to learn about the issues that are important to them, so that we as a whole can implement new ideas and solutions to give our Hollywood a brighter future. I certainly can’t imagine a better place to live. What will I do for you: As City Commissioner, I vow to ensure that every member of our community has an equal voice in city decisions. We are in this together, and as

such, will make important decisions together. After all, every decision that is made affects you – the loyal tax payers of our beautiful city. In an effort to provide for future capital improvement projects, I vow to work towards lowering our city’s debt and to only vote for contracts that are in Hollywood’s best interests. I bring to the table strong morals and ethics, a fresh voice, and common sense, with the intention of creating a Hollywood that is better for all of us. What you should know about me: I have been a resident of Hollywood (both in Boulevard Heights and Driftwood) for 27 years. I met my wife, Donna, at a Florida Jaycees Conference more than 15 years ago and we share a beautiful teenage daughter, Ciara, and our son (our dog), Chase. I chose to live in Hollywood because this was a vibrant family community with affordable homes and robust commercial growth and friendly neighbors. As a resident of Hollywood, family-man, community activist, current Commissioner of the Central Broward Water Control District (CBWCD), since 2000, and entrepreneur for more than 20 years, I take pride in working with organizations that enhance the quality of life for people in our community. As Commissioner of the CBWCD, I have assisted Hollywood in receiving nearly 3 million dollars in capital improvement projects and assisted in alleviating drainage concerns. I recently assisted District 5 to receive capital improvement funds to create 3 certified wildlife habitats. Being a leader of several community organizations and by serving on various City Boards, attending meetings and volunteering my time to worthy endeavors, I have obtained a wealth of knowledge and experience that will enable me to immediately start working for our neighborhoods and our City. What will I do for you: As Hollywood Commissioner, I will work

City of Hollywood Neighborhood Master Plan to my last position of holding the office of president of our association. I am also a member of the Driftwood Civic Association. What will I do for you: All my votes as a commissioner will be after I have thoroughly researched the item. My vote will be fiscally responsible and in the best interests of the residents of District 5 and Hollywood. I will work to increase our property values and improve our standard of living. I have no political or personal ties to any developers, lawyers, unions, or city employees. There will be no issue of a conflict of interest. I will be able to vote on all items that come before the City Commission.

diligently to encourage residents and business owners in District 5 to become more involved in the City. I will work to strengthen our City ordinances, holding banks and investors accountable for properties (possible state legislation required) and research federal or private funding opportunities to assist homeowners to preserve their property. I will research and implement national “best practice” strategies to address Hollywood’s concerns (budget, public safety, sidewalks, streets, revitalization efforts, stronger neighborhoods, economic development, redevelopment, etc.). I plan to evaluate our City’s policies and procedures to ensure they are resident and business friendly and review contracts to confirm that the City’s vendors are fulfilling their obligations. I will capitalize on my relationships with partnering agencies to install infrastructure that will keep our streets and properties flood-free and vehicle and pedestrian friendly. While I understand the many other challenges our City faces, I am committed to not just identifying problems, rather working with residents, business owners and others to identify creative and viable solutions. At the heart of this is a belief that we must all work to build the economic foundations of the City of Hollywood. Working together is essential to our community.

What you should know about me: My name is Francisco Vargas. I started my education at Pedro H. Urena National University (UNPHU) in 1983, and graduated in 1989 with a Major in accounting and auditing. UNPHU was definitely the right choice for me. My undergraduate experiences were fantastic. I really enjoyed being introduced to an intense level of academic challenges, and a lot of unfamiliar, but friendly people. I had a great group of close friends in college, and we spent a lot of time together. In 2001 I completed my master degree (MS) in science of secondary education at Mercy College in New York. In 1987 I met my wife Rosie at my sister’s house, and after 2 years

we married in November 1989. In 1990 we moved to New York City and had two wonderful girls, Aixa 19 years old and Alexis 13 years old. I have spent the past 18 years working as a mathematics teacher in the public school system between the New York City Department of Education and Broward County Public Schools. My wife Rosie has spent the past 20 years working in the healthcare system, she has worked at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York and Healthworkx in Florida. Rosie and I moved to the wonderful Sunshine State in 2004 due to a teaching opportunity. The interaction with students on a daily basis definitely keeps me young and has influenced my insights for teaching/advising. I hope this helps you get to know me and from a personal standpoint. Thanks for reading!

Edward F. Holodak What you should know about me?

and hard work have always produced positive results and great achievements for myself and each company.

In addition to being a Hollywood resident for over 23 years, I have run a business here since 1999. I pride myself on being a good father, husband and member of my community. I have been active in community associations and served as president of the Hollywood Lakes Section Civic Association, and a board of director for the Hollywood Hills Civic Association. In addition to obtaining my law degree from the University of Florida, I have a Masters in International Business Administration from Nova University. Growing up in a family that owned its own small business, I know the value of a dollar, I know what it means to work until the work is done and not just until the clock says it is quitting time. I have worked at organizations from IBM to the Central Intelligence Agency, and my dedication

What will I do for you? I will bring my work ethic, commitment, business background and family orientation to the City Commission every day. Hollywood is a great city that can be even better. I will use my experience in business to better Hollywood. I will make sure that we examine each contract, every department and ensure any deal Hollywood does will be beneficial for the City, make the City a better place, and makes sense for you – our citizens. I will strive every day to make sure we never again face a $38 Million shortfall in our budget. I can make this commitment because as a businessman I know how to put together a positive budget. I will know what questions to ask because as an attorney I know how to negotiate contracts that protect my clients. I will bring 28 years of business and legal experience to work for YOU, every day.

set me apart and will allow me to serve you to the best of my ability.

I was raised in Hollywood and attended school locally (Orange Brook Elementary & Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory), I have worked locally and plan to raise my future children here. At the age of 19 I became the youngest purchaser at Pearl Art’s Design Images and was able to renegotiate with existing vendors to save 6% across the board as well as centralize shipping and transportation adding additional savings of over 15%. I have extensive experience in real estate and real estate appraising from my time at Access Appraisals and The Amoedo Group. The President of The Amoedo Group, Andres Amoedo III P.A. credits much of my success as the Account Executive from my ability to communicate, build relationships and create a team atmosphere, qualities I feel are important in representing the city of Hollywood properly. In this economic time in which we live in today, my belief is that we must work together in order to find the solutions that will rise us above our current financial short falls. My background in contract reviewing, negotiating, and fact finding will serve me well when making an informed decision on your behalf, but more importantly I believe reaching out to the community and creating dialogue is what will

What I will do for you: If elected by the great citizens of Hollywood, I can ensure my fellow citizens that I will work to protect the integrity of our city and hold accountability over the city budget. Although as a commissioner I will not have the authority to pass an ordinance alone and must obtain a majority vote to achieve my goals. I will work hard to bring a true transparent budget, raise morale and work with city staff and fellow commissioners to improve our city and pinpoint areas of needed improvement in order to manage our city more efficiently. A priority I feel is important to help the city get back on track and into a progressive state is to negotiate with the city employees, Police and Fire Departments in order to finalize a competitive contract. Although as a commissioner I will not be allowed as part of the negotiation process I will be as much involved in the process as possible to resolve this issue. As I stated before I believe in order to represent the city and the citizens of Hollywood properly, it will take an open line of communication. As such I intend to keep a direct line of contact with you the citizens of Hollywood and continue to reach out for feedback on all city issues. Thank you for your time and please feel free to contact me by email Freddy@ freddy2012. com or by phone (954) 639-6505.

What you should know about me: I was born in North Tonawanda, New York and moved to the Hollywood area in 1961 with my parents and younger sister. While attending Dade County Community College I met and married William Sherwood. Together, we have four children and now have four grandchildren. I am a retired Registered Nurse with a specialized certification in Oncology. Other accomplishments in business, legislative affairs, and Chairperson on the Citywide Master Plan for Economic Development prepared me well for my job as your City Commissioner. During my four year tenure as Commissioner and Vice Mayor of the City of Hollywood, I have worked for the welfare and safety of others in my community. I initiated amendments to four ordinances to achieve this goal. In the past four years, I have attended all of the Civic Association meetings in my district and welcomed all new businesses to the City through the Chamber of Commerce. I have responded to nearly

1,000 phone calls and emails to resolve most residential issues within a 24-hour timeframe. You should know that although I am short in stature, I am a GIANT in completing every task and goal I set for myself, my district and the City as a whole. I am also a GIANT of integrity with a high work ethic and a strong moral compass. I am happiest when helping people. What I will do for you: I will continue to work on the many projects that I have begun such as improvement to Hollywood Boulevard and State Road 441. I look forward to bringing more economic development to our City so our commercial tax base will increase; therefore, residential taxes will stabilize or decrease. I am dedicated to move Hollywood forward into financial health. Even though I was elected and report to District 6 constituents, I represent and support the entire City. I am always here to help.

2012 Hollywood Mayoral Candidates Peter Bober What you should know about me: Growing up in Hollywood, and having attended Hollywood Hills Elementary School, it is a great honor to now serve as the city’s Mayor. I am a proud graduate of Nova High School, the University of Texas at Austin (B.A.), as well as the University of Pennsylvania Law School (J.D.), where I served as Senior Editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review. In addition to the privilege of serving as Mayor, I practice law in Hollywood with my wife, Samara, at Bober & Bober, P.A. Many of the cases we handle involve employment law, unpaid overtime wage claims and personal injury matters. In my personal life, I am the proud father of two small boys who attend public school in Hollywood. They are my pride and joy, and I am so glad they are making many of the same great memories I had growing up in this wonderful city. As many residents know, I spent a yearand-a-half of my life knocking on the doors— explaining why I wanted to be mayor—asking for their support. I made three promises when I campaigned four years ago. First and foremost, I promised that we would stop the perception of cronyism at city hall and instead, make government transparent and accountable to the people. Working with you, we have accomplished this important task. City hall now seeks to include residents in important decisions, city officials are held accountable for their actions (and inactions), and no longer is Hollywood making headlines for the wrong reasons. That is why I spearheaded term limits, campaign finance reform, lobbyist reform and budget reform. Secondly, I promised to end “corporate

welfare” and developer giveaways, and emphasize fiscal restraint. No longer is Hollywood in the newspaper every other week for squandering resources and taxpayer dollars. Today, taxpayer money is spent more wisely, and prudent fiscal management is the norm. By working through a number of past financial difficulties, this year we have a balanced budget, with no increase in fees or the tax rate. While more work remains, I have no doubt we are on the right path. Lastly, I promised Hollywood would be number one in Broward County in environmental initiatives. I believe a commitment to the environment says a great deal about who we are as a community. Shortly, after being elected Mayor, I spearheaded the Recycle-Bank initiative that, ultimately, led to 32,000 huge blue recycling bins being delivered to city residents. The program has become so successful that we are now the recycling leader in Broward virtually every month. So successful was the project that we had to restructure our recycling pickups to once per week, in addition to adding onceper-week, brush and hard-junk pickup—at no additional cost to residents. In conclusion, I want residents to know that I work hard, don’t quit and want Hollywood to be the best it can be. I respectfully ask for your vote on November 6th. What will I do for you: Candidates for office will typically promise voters the sun, the moon and the stars. They are not big on specifics. Unfortunately, talk is cheap. I am running for re-election based on my record. As Mayor, I will continue the policies

of fiscal restraint we have already implemented. I will continue to insure that our labor costs are ones we can actually afford, and that we do not kick problems down the road for future generations. At the same time, I will continue insuring that Hollywood stays competitive in the marketplace for talented employees. Like a business, Hollywood’s one “product” is its city services. We cannot, with a straight face, tell residents we are prioritizing quality-oflife issues if simultaneously, we are making ourselves unattractive to the mostly highly skilled employees. We also cannot provide great service unless we have the necessary funds to do so. That is why I will continue as Mayor to expand the city’s tax base—both commercial and residential. In addition to focusing redevelopment of the city’s aging housing stock, Hollywood must continue to attract major new development initiatives like Margaritaville, the upcoming Super-Walmart shopping plaza on the old Fashion Center site, the upcoming Publix shopping center at U.S. 1 and Sheridan St., the Nova Southeastern Oceanographic Institute, and the Barry University expansion. These redevelopment initiatives do not simply expand the city’s tax base, but help bring

vitality to the entire community. In addition, I will continue prioritizing education in Hollywood. We cannot attract new families to Hollywood, or expect to retain the ones we already have, without making schools a priority. Working in partnership with the School Board, Hollywood recently opened its first new public school in over 40 years—Beachside Montessori Village (preK through 8). In addition, on September 18, 2012, I attended the ribbon cutting for Hollywood’s newest school expansion at the Hollywood Academy of Arts and Sciences (“H.A.A.S.”), which has expanded its K-8 program to nearly 1,400 students. Both of these new schools are A-rated, with H.A.A.S. having the highest FCAT scores of any middle school in Broward County. In addition, as Mayor I will continue to focus on the quality of life issues that matter most to Hollywood residents. Primary among them are public safety and code enforcement. These issues will be the key drivers of Hollywood’s economic re-development initiatives since the safety and appearance of the community will directly influence new commercial and residential re-development in our city. In conclusion, I intend to continue doing the work I have already started as your Mayor. I will continue telling you the truth, trying my best, and doing what I believe is best for Hollywood. I appreciate your vote, and hope you will join my campaign so we can continue making a great city even greater. Please visit www.boberformayor.com to learn how to volunteer, get a campaign sign or to learn more about me. Thank you for allowing me to serve you.

Cliff Germano What you should know about me: I was born in New York and my family moved to Florida when I was a teenager. My wife, Anne and I have been married for 35 years, residing in Hollywood. Our 2 children like my wife, were born and raised in Hollywood. I graduated Chamindae H.S., University of Miami Degree in Economics, Marshall University Applied Science Certificate, U.S. Department of Labor OSHA Outreach Instructor, and Vocational Apprenticeship Teaching Certificate Broward Schools. I worked for 30 years in Tourism in the production end of the Convention/ Tradeshow industry with responsibilities ranging from Worker, Job Steward, and Production Foreman to Account Executive. I helped develop and register a training program for the industry, approved by the U.S. Department of Labor, State Dept of Education, and Broward Schools. Then, I became Director of a multi-trade multi-employer Training Institute providing job skills training. My responsibilities included facility management, academic, administrative, budgetary, contract negotiations and

14

governmental agency interaction. I am familiar with how government works, and have been to Washington and Tallahassee on behalf of vocational and apprenticeship training. Also I served as a trustee for a multi-national training fund with fiduciary and policy direction responsibilities. In my community, I worked as past Recording Secretary, and currently, President of the North Central Civic Association, twice elected as Vice President, Hollywood Council of Civic Associations, and served on several Citizen advisory boards with both the City and the County. I am familiar with our City issues. I attend city meetings regularly and speak on issues at city hall. I have tried to work for improvements in our City as a resident. I am confident that I have the necessary Professional and Civic experience to effectively lead our City and the ability to work full time to get our city headed in the right direction. What will I do for you: I can promise that I will work full time to make our great City even better. With our beach, parks, downtown, hospital, industrial/ warehouse districts, port, business corridors,

rail lines and highways and central location, everything is here. We have a vibrant diverse community and an ample supply of housing from affordable to exclusive. My plan is to lower the burden on our residents and business owners by reducing taxes and the cost of fees, from water to business licenses and permits, along with streamlining the process. This along with reducing the crime rate and accentuating the positive City elements will spur economic development. The incentive and handout model has not resulted in long term sustainable positive gains. Additionally, we need to hire and spend

locally. As our taxpayer money gets spent and re-spent here the City benefits. Also, institute job training and placement help for our unemployed residents. I feel we must be more inclusive. There should be more input from residents and business owners. Who knows the problems better than those who live and work here? Making smart growth development decisions are imperative. These projects that are approved affect the City permanently. Due diligence needs to be exercised before awarding contracts as part of an overall smart economic policy. Our current employees are a valuable asset not adversaries. We must cultivate positive relationships and rely on staff expertise instead of hiring outside consultants or counsel. Finally, there must be a commitment to reduce the City debt along with realigning the CRA closer to its original purpose of improving the blighted areas. As your full time Mayor, working together with your help and support, we can make Hollywood greater than it is today. Thank you for your support.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

regarding sept. 2012 issue To the Editor: It is very interesting that Mr. Vargas candidate for Hollywood Commission District 5 choose not to answer for himself and let his talking head Campaign Manager answer for him [in the Sept. 2012 issue]. Would he let lobbyist speak for him if elected? It sure looks like it from his response. Said talking head attacked Ms. Melissa Heinrich as an unnamed e-mailer and then referenced Hustler magazine. One can only surmise that both Mr. Vargas and Mr. Newman were too busy looking at the pictures in Hustler to put their brains in gear. We need leaders who both think and speak for themselves in Hollywood!

Sincerely, Marty Jacobsen, Blogger, www.browardoutrage.com

Cinema paradiso IN hollywood? An open letter to Hollywood: The CRA has been working with the Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival organization to bring a Cinema Paradisio location to Downtown Hollywood. I'm an avid film goer and have been very excited by the prospect of being able to see films closer to home. I think this would be such a great amenity for all Hollywood residents and visitors and it would certainly be wonderful for our downtown restaurants as I'm sure people would be eating out or having a drink before and / or after a film. Unfortunately, the negotiations seem to have stalled primarily because there are several FLIFF Board Members who seem to be opposed to having a second location. Apparently their fear is that fewer people from the south part of the County will patronize the existing Fort Lauderdale location if there's a second location in Hollywood. I understand their concern but I think that they are being a bit narrow-minded. If anything, this would expose more people to the FLIFF and increase awareness of the fact that there even is an independent theater in Fort Lauderdale. I'm hoping that with some pressure, the reluctant Board Members can be convinced that this is a win-win for all involved. With that in mind, I'm hoping that you can either post a comment on the FLIFF facebook page and / or email Gregory von Hausch, the President & CEO, @ greg@fliff.com. Here's the facebook link: https://www.facebook.com/ FortLauderaleInternationalFilmFestival This deal was so close to happening that the info on the website includes Hollywood! - Dori Lynn Neuwirth - Gottzmann Gottzmann Insurance Group

I have heard Ann Murray (of our scandal ridden School Board) who submits for mileage to drive to school board meetings talked him into running. Ann Murray has collected over $2000.00 in tax payer funds, meant to educate our kids, as expense money. She bills the tax payers and children to drive to school board meetings and special events. She even put in for 33 miles round trip from her house to Signature Grand in Davie which is less than 10 miles round trip. Read more about Ann on my blog www.browardoutrage.com.

To the Editor : Your profiles showed that, without question, Linda Sherwood should be the one to serve as District 6 Commissioner again. While the other 2 candidates backgrounds are admirable, they don’t compare to her accomplishments. Their platforms are empty promises, and contradictory. Linda Sherwood has proven, repeatedly, her dedication. Just look at how she has found funding for improvement to our parks, our roads,

and our living areas. She promises to continue these tasks, and more. Her strength is her experience in this city, not just as a resident, but in rebuilding this community inside and out. She is the only one that is qualified based on merits. As for the October profiles of mayoral candidates, Hollywood should RE-ELECT PETER BOBER ! His commitment can not be equaled. - Mary Lamont District 6

Greater Hollywood Junior Chamber helps local families eat this Thanksgiving Holiday On Nov. 20, 2012, the Greater Hollywood Junior Chamber (Hollywood Jaycees) will be delivering baskets filled with food for a full Thanksgiving dinner to approximately 50 families who are in need and live within the Greater Hollywood area. Members of the Hollywood Jaycees have long played an active role in the Hollywood community by carrying out various philanthropic projects. One such project is the Thanksgiving Baskets, and the Jaycees have been providing Thanksgiving meals to members of the community for many years. However, the organization relies on the generosity of the local business community in order to continue this project. The Jaycees invite your participation by donating items such as turkeys, fresh vegetables, gravy, cranberry sauce, beverages, bread, pie, etc. to be included in the Thanksgiving baskets.

Monetary donation and gift cards will also be accepted, which will be used to purchase above such items. Items can be dropped off at the following donation sites: Value Pawn & Jewelry 6001 Duval Street Hollywood (441 & Hollywood Blvd) Mon. - Fri. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mortgage Masters 2699 Stirling Road, Suite C 101 Ft. Lauderdale (Stirling & N Park Road) Mon. - Fri. 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Volunteers are also needed! The Jaycees are in need of anyone who will be able to help deliver baskets to the families. For more information or to volunteer, please call Deb Gronvold at (954) 9814378, or visit www.hollywoodjaycees.org to submit online monetary donations.

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino celebrates ‘Pinktober’

Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood is spotlighting the power of Pink this October in honor of Hard Rock International’s 13th annual PINKTOBER™ breast cancer awareness campaign. Hard Rock will donate proceeds from specially designated “pinksheet” hotel rooms and Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood limited edition PINKTOBER collectibles and apparel to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation® and The Caron Keating Foundation (U.K.). Additional proceeds from this year’s local Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood PINKTOBER campaign will benefit the American Cancer Society “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” and the Breast Cancer Center Fund at Memorial Foundation. On Thursday, October 4th at 5:30 p.m., Seminole Hard Rock will kick-off PINKTOBER with “PINKTOBER Rocks,” a special event and “Sunset Lighting Ceremony” benefitting the Breast Cancer Center Fund at Memorial Foundation. President and CEO of the Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade Lisa Scott-Founds and Easy 93.1FM Morning Show Host Susan Wise were honored by Seminole Hard Rock with the role of “flipping the ceremonial switch” that will illuminate the hotel and Seminole Paradise Lake in pink, as well as launch a spectacular pink fireworks display. A contest for the “Most Creative Pink Shoes” – men’s, ladies and children’s shoes – will be judged by local celebrities and fashion experts. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, as well as a $500 cash prize for the most creative men’s and ladies pink shoes. Other evening festivities include a pink fashion show, Plantation High School Marching Band, live music, special offers from the shops and restaurants in Seminole Paradise and the everpopular Miami Food Trucks, which will also donate to the cause. As in years past, the hotel has set aside special PINKTOBER pinkhued, Sleep Like a Rock bedded guest rooms with 25 percent of the room rate to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The PINKTOBER room packages start at $229 (plus tax) for one night (Sunday – Friday, only) and include a complimentary commemorative PINKTOBER Hard Rock pin, a $25 Blue Plate food credit and a $25 Body Rock Spa credit. Packages

are based on availability. Credits are daily if guest books more than one night. The select guestrooms will also be outfitted with special collectible PINKTOBER bathrobes that can be purchased in the Rock Shop, with a portion of the proceeds donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Shades of soft pastel and hot

pink will also liven up Center Bar, the Lobby Bar and the Beach Club. Constant Grind will serve pink cookies and pink cupcakes. A pink Cadillac CT 2012 will be showcased in the hotel lobby and guests can even bathe in a pink-hued pool or take advantage of Body Rock Spa’s 30% discounts on pink manicures and pedicures. Downtown Hollywood mural project secures third location BY CARON CONWAY | LEAD CORRESPONDENT The third outdoor installation of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project will get underway Sat., Oct. 6, when acclaimed artist Jessy Nite begins transforming a blank white building façade at 1901 Harrison Street into an eye-catching work of art. She will be painting her mural live during the district’s monthly ArtWalk on Sat.,

October 20 at 7 p.m. The 18-by-22-foot mural across the corner building’s second story above New Age Cycles will feature groups of kaleidoscoping diamonds in 20 pastel shades that are punctuated by black diagonal stripes. Nite expects to spend more than 100 hours on upcoming Saturdays and Sundays from sunrise till dark to bring her vision to life. A multidisciplinary artist and graphic designer, Nite has had solo and group

exhibitions in South Florida and other parts of the country, as well as internationally. Her clean, refined style emphasizes graphic elements, a balance of colors and the composition of color. “I’m very excited about this project. This site with this work, it just feels like the right thing,” Nite said. “I want people to be able to walk by it and experience it, and carry it with them throughout their day.” The City of Hollywood Community

Redevelopment Agency (CRA) launched the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project in August with celebrated cartoon artist David “LEBO” LeBatard’s jazz-inspired mural, Be-Bop Into Outer Space located at 1832 S. Young Circle across the street from the ArtsPark at Young Circle. Two weeks later acclaimed local artist Ruben Ubiera was commissioned to create a vividly layered mural using his signature style, a montage of realism mixed with colorful angular shapes that spans over 70 feet on the front façade of the Downtown Hollywood Ramada located at 1925 Harrison St. The mural project adds a visual arts component to Mayor Peter Bober’s Live Music Initiative that kicked off last February with the debut of the ArtsPark Live! year-round free concert series at the ArtsPark at Young Circle amphitheater. City commissioners in May also created a Live Music District Extended Hours License that makes it easier for downtown venues offering live music to obtain an extended-hours liquor license. Nite’s mural will be the third in a series of outdoor works by established local contemporary artists that will adorn at least 10 downtown properties. The building at 1901 Harrison Street “offers the perfect site for a mural as it is a corner building that boasts a highly visible second floor,” said property manager Ben Schiff. “The design of the mural and reputation of the artist, Jessy Nite, are sure to generate a lot of positive attention and make 1901 Harrison Street a landmark in Downtown Hollywood.” New Age Cycles owner Reed Wallace said he welcomes the mural and thinks it will bring more traffic to his shop. “We love art, and Downtown Hollywood is an arts district. We’re happy to help liven and brighten it up,” Wallace said. Nite is looking forward to spending time painting outside in Downtown Hollywood, where she used to work as a graphic artist. “I have a lot of love for that Hollywood crowd,” she said. “I’m excited to be part of that scene again.” For more information about the Downtown Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency or its programs and events, please call 954-924-2980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org. There is no charge for on-street downtown parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. Free on-street parking is available in three-hour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

NEWS FROM THE GREATER HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Workshops, seminars, leads “Good Morning Hollywood” groups: great Chamber benefits Breakfast Photos you can’t afford to miss

The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce held its September “Good Morning Hollywood” breakfast meeting at the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa. Hollywood City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark was the keynote speaker, providing an update on the latest city developments. We hope you enjoy these photos from the breakfast, which was sponsored by the Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa and Waste Pro. Photos courtesy of Elegant Photography.

Perhaps one of the most valuable benefits members of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce have is the ability to participate in a variety of free workshops and seminars designed to help them stay up-to-date with the fast-paced world of business. From workshops on how to use social media, to learning about identity theft and how to protect yourself and your business, to how to use QuickBooks for your accounting, and how to turn a pile of newspapers into a pile of leads... the Chamber’s offerings are a useful benefit small business owners and managers can put to good use! Business counseling is also available through the Chamber at no cost for members. Leads groups are yet another useful chamber benefit. Only one representative from any particular industry can participate allowing for maximal leads exchange. For example, a leads group might include one mortgage broker, one printer, one plumber, one contractor, one banker, etc. The idea behind the group is for the members to help gain business through “leads” provided by one another. “Leads groups facilitate familiarity and knowledge of the person behind the business,” explains Stephen Sarsfield of South Florida MultiMedia, an active chamber leads group participant. “I have given and received dozens of lucrative leads and valuable advice, and feel that belonging to a leads

group is one of the strongest benefits of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.” Tom Korba of South Beach Grafix agrees. “I moved my business from South Beach to Hollywood five years ago. The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and my participation in the Thursday morning leads group became the foundation for restarting my business. I have made many great business contacts as well as friends,” says Korba. The chamber has three highly effective leads groups operating right now; if you are interested in learning more about how your business can participate in one of them, contact Mike at 954-923-4000. The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to helping your business thrive and workshops, seminars and leads groups are just a few of the benefits members receive. For additional information on chamber membership, please visit the chamber’s website at www.hollywoodchamber.org or call the chamber at 954.923.4000.
