Commingled = Heavy Junk and Yard Waste up to 4 cubic yards.
The City of Hollywood recently announced several solid waste and recycling service enhancements that will begin for residential sanitation customers on September 10, 2012. With the implementation of a six-day-a-week schedule (Monday through Saturday), the city’s solid waste and recycling contractor, Waste Pro, will put in place the following schedule: • Twice weekly garbage collection • Once weekly recycling collection • Once weekly commingled material (brush and hard junk) collection The new service enhancements address feedback received from the city’s residents who are recycling more than ever due to the popularity of single stream recycling and the recycling rewards program the city instituted with RecycleBank. This increase in recycling resulted in residents filling their blue recycling

SEPTEMBER 2012
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Ms. Sandomir, I was reading the Hollywood's Gazette's August edition this evening. After reading the bios from the candidates from District 5 for City Commissioner on page 15, I became suspicious of the originality of Mr. Francisco Vargas' words in his response to “What will I do for you.” I googled some key phrases from his responses and discovered that he basically copied and pasted his responses from the copyrighted 2008 Democratic National Convention Party Platform, specifically from the preamble to the document. The link to the document is: http://www.democrats.org/about/party_ platform The first paragraph that Mr. Vargas plagiarized from is located on page 6 and reads as follows: "For decades, Americans have been told to act for ourselves, by ourselves, on our own. Democrats reject this recipe for division and failure. Today, we commit to renewing our American community by recognizing that solutions to our greatest challenges can only be rooted in common ground and the strength of our civic life. The American people do not want government to solve all our problems; we know that personal responsibility, character, imagination, diligence, hard work and faith ultimately determine individual achievement. But we also know that at every turning point in our nation’s history, we have demonstrated our love of country by uniting to overcome our challenges—whether ending slavery, fighting two world wars for the cause of freedom or sending a man to the moon. Today, America must unite again –to help our most vulnerable residents get back on their feet and to restore the vitality of both urban centers and family farms –because the success of each depends on the success of the other. And America must challenge us again –to serve our country and to meet our responsibilities –whether in our families or local governments; our civic organizations or places of worship. " The second paragraph Mr. Vargas plagiarized from is the final paragraph of the preamble located on page 7 of the document and reads as follows: "We have a choice to make. We can choose to stay the current failed course. Or we can choose a path that builds upon the best of who and what we are, that reflects our highest values. We can have more of the last eight years, or we can rise together and create a new kind of government. The time for change has come, and America must seize it."
I will commit to renewing our community by recognizing that solutions to our greatest challenges can only be rooted in common ground and the strength of our civic life. The people of our community do not want local government to solve all our problems; we know that personal responsibility, character, imagination, diligence, hard work and faith ultimately determine individual achievement. But we also know that at every turning point in our nation's history, we have demonstrated the love of our country by overcoming challenges whether ending slavery, fighting two world wars for the cause of freedom or sending a man to the moon. Today our community must unite again to help our most vulnerable residents get back on their feet and to restore vitality of both urban centers and family bonds, because the success of each depends on the success of the other. If we choose to change, just imagine what we can do. We have a choice to make. We can choose to stay with the current failed course, or we can choose a path that builds upon the best of who and what we are, and reflects our highest values. We can have more of the same, or rise together and create a new kind of local government. The time for change has come, and this community must seize it. After bolding the plagiarized words and phrases from the original document it is clear as day that Mr. Vargas did not write his response, but rather changed a few words of the copyrighted Preamble to make it applicable to this election in Hollywood rather than the presidential election. Mr. Vargas did not site his source. The only truly original words in his response is, "If we choose to change, just imagine what we can do." As a teacher, I am appalled by these actions as I stress the seriousness of plagiarism to my students. As a fellow educator, Mr. Vargas should be aware of the severe consequences of his actions. As a publication that presents itself to the community as a news worthy document, the publisher has an obligation to vet statements made in the Hollywood Gazette. You should be concerned that you could be subject to a lawsuit due to copyright infringement as well as having your journalistic integrity questioned. I believe you should print a retraction and include a formal apology from Mr. Vargas for misleading the public and voters for the originality of those statements. I look forward to discussing how you plan on correcting this matter as it is an embarrassment to your publication and the well informed residents of the City of Hollywood.
NO COOKIE CUTTER DESIGNS HERE!
Mr. Vargas' response reads as follows:
-Melissa Heinrich Hollywood, District 5
RESPONSE FROM THE PUBLISHER Melissa, Thank you for submitting your allegation of misconduct regarding Mr. Vargas’ statements in our previous issue and for your diligence in researching the origin of the plagiarism. Plagiarism, in any form, is not tolerated in this publication. Our editorial integrity is something we are highly committed to upholding. I contacted Mr. Vargas, so that he may respond to these allegations of plagiarism. He has responded via his campaign manager. As an impartial member of the media, I will not make any recommendations for the City or the voters in District 5. However, I will ensure that the proper organziations will be made aware of this behavior. I am
personally committed to ensuring that my publication reveals candidates in an honest and fair manner. Virtue and integrity are vital to successful leadership and it is the job of the media to unveil the true nature of candidates, so that the voters can make informed decisions. As a small community newspaper, we have never made endorsements and always provide each candidate an equal opportunity to present themselves through editorial and advertising. Again, I apologize for having printed his statements and will take greater care to ensure that candidate biography submissions and statements are vetted. Jennifer Sandomir Publisher Hollywood Gazette
RESPONSE FROM THE VARGAS CAMPAIGN Dear Ms. Sandomir, According to NOLO Law for All [http://www.nolo.com/legalencyclopedia/fair-use-rule-copyrightmaterial-30100.html], under copyright law’s Fair Use Exception “Noncommercial use is often fair use” The First Amendment to the United States Constitution grants speech and the press great protection. Most Americans believe this is a fundamental guarantee to their freedom. The Supreme Court has consistently granted the most protection to Political Speech. Political Speech is what transpires during political campaigns. Although copyright law is not completely subjugated to the First Amendment, it does become restricted in use against political opponents. When courts review claims of copyright infringement, they look for the purpose of the use of material protected by copyright. One of the first elements is to determine whether there is a commercial use, i.e. is the user trying to make money on the copyrighted material. Clearly in a political campaign, the
! ED R IT FFE LIME O M TI
first element fails. “Although the First Amendment does not provide a defense to copyright infringement, when an act of copying occurs in the course of political, social or moral debate, the public interest in free expression is one factor favoring a finding of fair use.” (Hustler Magazine, Inc. v. Moral Majority, Inc., 606 F. Supp. 1526, 1536 (C.D. Cal. 1985).) The criticism by an unnamed source, in an email to the editor, is an obvious political attack on Francisco Vargas candidacy for District 5, Hollywood Commissioner seat and indeed the Hollywood Gazette. The attempt to use copyright law and threats to diminish his character is exactly why Francisco Vargas political comments are protected under the First Amendment. Mr. Vargas stands by his beliefs in the statement he made which includes fragments of two paragraphs from the seventeen paragraphs Preamble of the 57 page 2008 Democratic Platform. Vincent Newman, Campaign Manager for Francisco Vargas District 5 City Commisioner Candidate

Petropolis Park: Cageless care and boarding for your canine by Miriam Cronkhite
The only cageless overnight boarding facility in Hollywood, Petropolis Park offers a haven for dogs and peace of mind for their owners, by providing cageless day care and boarding, and certified training with 24-hour live staffing. Employees develop a bond with each dog. They understand their personalities and needs. Jodi Kurzweil has been bringing Jewel to doggie day camp at Petropolis Park since 2005. Jewel gets the full treatment, also attending weekly training sessions and stays at the “doggie hotel” for one week, several times a year. “It is a cageless society day and night,” said Kurzweil. Petropolis staff caters to every dog. Animals with special needs or handicaps are given the extra love and attention needed, including administering shots, special diets and medication, at no additional cost. Daniel De La Rosa has owned Petropolis Park since 2008 and has been training dogs since 1989. De La Rosa is a certified clicker trainer, using positive reinforcement. This method has been used to train goldfish to guinea pigs. “A dog can be trained at any age,” said De La Rosa. He explains that you can train a dog forever and continued training is important because they are in thinking mode all the time, continually learning. De La Rosa uses clicker training to resolve many common issues such as potty training, jumping on people and pulling on a leash. Dog day care offers a supervised environment of exercise and socialization. “The biggest benefit to the client is that the dog is as tired as they are at the end of the day,” De La Rosa said. Matt Mailey takes his dog Pepa to regular day care. “I enjoy the fact that my dog Pepa gets all the crazy out during the day. When I get home she is worn out and sleeps well,” said Mailey. Because all the dogs are excited and enthusiastic about attending Petropolis Park, pet owners don’t have to feel guilty about leaving their dog at home or in the care of someone else. Dogs can play in doggie pools and enjoy water games during the hottest time of the day. Small and large dogs are rotated, so each group gets time in the yard. “Jewel usually does not want to be separated from me, yet she cannot wait to go inside to be with her doggie pals. She walks into Petropolis and she does not say goodbye to me,” said Kurzweil. During overnight cageless boarding, elevated dog cots are used. These hygienic cots help prevent joint-related difficulties,

cut down on elbow calluses and are known to be beneficial for arthritic and geriatric pets. Dogs left alone in cages for 12-15 hours can get sick, seriously injured or become anxious during bad weather. At Petropolis Park, a staff member is there to calm and care for all the dogs, like a guest in their home. “My dog hates cages. She loves Petropolis Park and the space to run and play with the other big dogs,” said Mailey. Petropolis Park is not a large corporate
commercial kennel, “it is more of a second home,” said De La Rosa. Employees know all the dogs by name, habit and bark. “My dog is not just a pay check, they truly love her there,” said Mailey. The staff has been there for years. Clients enjoy hearing stories of their dog’s day at school and employees welcome feedback. “Daniel is always asking me what he can do to improve my puppy’s life at doggie camp,” said Kurzweil. The sturdy concrete
building is hurricane protected and staff members are trained in procedures of safety during bad weather. For more information, visit www. petropolispark.com or call (954) 923-7768. Petropolis Park is located at Washington and Dixie Highway at 2112 Washington Street. Daycare hours are Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and extended member hours are 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Hollywood’s “Sushi Kings” roll out winning restaurant concept BY CARON CONWAY Longtime friends Juan Andrés Chin and Niti Masintapan turned their families’ experience in the restaurant business into GO!Bento, a winning sushi concept launched in Hollywood one year ago that’s getting rave reviews from customers, attracting interest from investment banks and expanding to other
locations. Chin attributes the success of GO!Bento Hollywood, located at 2725 Hollywood Blvd., to a dearth of other Asian fast-casual brands, a sound business model and a simple philosophy based on “giving people what they want.” And what customers want is quick, easy-to-order, inexpensive but quality sushi along with other Asian selections offered in a casual, welcoming environment.
The cuisine at GO!Bento, which is named for the Japanese compartmentalized dining tray, doesn’t “claim to be authentic” in the strict sense of the word, Chin said “We cater to the masses. We want to give sushi to everybody. ” Chin and Masintapan, who have been friends since they attended McNicol Middle School in Hollywood, started discussing going into business together while they were

students at the University of Miami. “My family has always owned restaurants. Our families have always busted their butts just to make a living,” said Chin, 32, who was born in New York to parents of Chinese and Colombian ancestry. The two friends started developing their business concept, inspired in part by Masintapan’s mother’s idea to add sushi to the menu at Eddie Hills Sushi & Thai in Hallandale Beach. Masintapan’s parents took over the landmark local eatery in the early ’90s and reinvented the former diner’s menu to showcase their Thai heritage. The addition of sushi selections increased the restaurant’s popularity. “Niti’s mom saw a need and just rolled with it,” Chin said. “And we expanded on it.” Before introducing their unique GO!Brands concept, Chin and Masintapan opened Amazing Sushi & Thai in Pembroke Pines in 2002 and a second location in Plantation. The partners also own GO!Moto, a food truck that operates at area events and offers catering, and they will be opening GO!Bento Gables this month in Coral Gables. There are plans to expand GO!Brands internationally as part of a brand of Brazilian nightclubs in Rio de Janeiro, and Chin and Masintapan are looking at additional locations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami. Chin envisions GO!Bento becoming the “Papa John’s of sushi,” and the two brands share a very similar business model based on a quality product and the right staff and training that has captured the interest of investment banks. “I believe that eventually we’re going to sell the brand and hold on to one or two key locations,” said Chin, who has a master’s degree in International Business Administration from Nova Southeastern University, GO!Bento Hollywood’s affordable menu incorporates quality ingredients, including vegetables to give the consumer healthy options, and features a vast array of sushi rolls, sushi combos, a la carte sushi and sashimi; 11 entrées such as lo mein, pad Thai, Korean BBQ, Thai curry and stir fry dishes; “Go Bowls” with sushi, seafood, chicken or beef served atop salad or rice; appetizers that include spring rolls, potstickers, rangoon, edamame, seaweed salad and avocado fries; and Asian soups, green tea ice cream, donuts with condensed milk, green tea, Thai tea and Thai coffee. Chin said Hollywood was the perfect location to test the waters for the new GO!Brands concept, with reasonable rent and labor costs compared to other areas, varied age demographics and a vibe that is eclectic and urban. “There’s a mix of everything there,” Chin said. “Hollywood was exactly what we needed.” GO!Bento Hollywood is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 10 p.m. Sundays at 2725 Hollywood Blvd. Inside and outdoor table service is offered, as well as takeout, delivery and online ordering. St. Baldrick’s event to raise $30K for kids with cancer Three Hollywood City Commission candidates will have their heads shaved Sat., Sept. 15 at a public event at Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub & Restaurant in Downtown Hollywood—not as part of some publicity stunt, but to raise funds for childhood cancer research through the nonprofit St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Among the two dozen “shavees” who had signed up by late August for Mickey Byrne’s 4th Annual St. Baldrick’s Day Charity Event are City Commission candidates Richard Valdez (District 1), Justin Serian (District 4) and Francisco Vargas (District 5). As a show of solidarity with young patients who typically lose their hair during cancer treatments, volunteers will have their heads shaved in exchange for pledges of financial support. Valdez, one of the fundraising leaders with $1,300 in pledges as of late August, is shaving his head in memory of his grandmother, who passed away from lung cancer. While the advertising executive initially balked at the thought of making such a bald statement, “Now I’m excited,” he said. “I’m going to be chromey and domey.” Serian hated having his head shaved back when he was in Army boot camp. But on this particular occasion, “for the cause, it’s worth it,” he said. “I’ll be thinking of the kids,” said Serian, a firefighter/paramedic. “I think those kids have more courage than 10 adults put together. Their positive attitude is something to be commended.” Vargas has a very personal reason for participating in the fundraising event. His brother Carlos underwent chemotherapy
Hollywood resident Steven Steinberg has been growing his 6-inch beard for nearly a year in an effort to bring awareness of the St. Baldrick’s cause. treatments for a malignant tumor before surgery last month necessitated the removal of his eye. “He’s been suffering for the past year and a half,” said Vargas, a math teacher at Driftwood Middle School in Hollywood. “I’m going to be proud to represent the people that are going through difficult times.” One shavee will go bald and beardless at the local head-shaving event. Hollywood resident Steven Steinberg has been growing his 6-inch beard for nearly a year in an effort to bring awareness of the St. Baldrick’s cause to anyone who asks about his unusually long facial hair. Like many shavees, Steinberg has been personally affected by cancer, through his 12-year-old cousin and a couple of his friends. “So I wanted to do this for them,” he said. Several candidates in the Nov. 6 Hollywood general municipal election
For some of the candidates, the event will be a family affair. Callari’s two daughters will volunteer, and her husband and son have signed up to be shavees, as have Sherwood’s husband and son, and Suastegui’s brother and friends. Suastegui and incumbent Commissioner Dick Blattner (District 4) also have donated funds to the Hollywood Gazette team. Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub owner Mark Rowe is not only organizing and hosting the event, but he’ll also be going under the barber’s razor. The local fundraiser, which starts at 4 p.m. at 1921 Hollywood Blvd., is one of thousands of similar St. Baldrick’s fundraisers held annually around the world since 2000 to help fill crucial funding gaps at medical institutions that treat young cancer patients. What began as a challenge among friends evolved into the nonprofit St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the world’s largest fundraising event for childhood cancer research. Each year, 175,000 Dr. Brian Cauff, Associate Medical Director, children worldwide are diagnosed with Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology cancer, which is the number one killer of and one of the volunteer “shavees” has children in the U.S. and Canada. ELECTION news
Meet Hollywood’s District 6 Candidates
In April 2012, the Hollywood Gazette began giving City Commission candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community in advance of the November 6
election. Each month will feature candidates from one district, followed by mayoral candidates. This month, District 6 candidates are featured.
Edward F. Holodak What will I do for you?
What you should know about me? In addition to being a Hollywood resident for over 23 years, I have run a business here since 1999. I pride myself on being a good father, husband and member of my community. I have been active in community associations and served as president of the Hollywood Lakes Section Civic Association, and a board of director for the Hollywood Hills Civic Association. In addition to obtaining my law degree from the University of Florida, I have a Masters in International Business Administration from Nova University. Growing up in a family that owned its own small business, I know the value of a dollar, I know what it means to work until the work is done and not just until the clock says it is quitting time. I have worked at organizations from IBM to the Central Intelligence Agency, and my dedication and hard work have always produced positive results and great achievements for myself and each company.
I will bring my work ethic, commitment, business background and family orientation to the City Commission every day. Hollywood is a great city that can be even better. I will use my experience in business to better Hollywood. I will make sure that we examine each contract, every department and ensure any deal Hollywood does will be beneficial for the City, make the City a better place, and makes sense for you – our citizens. I will strive every day to make sure we never again face a $38 Million shortfall in our budget. I can make this commitment because as a businessman I know how to put together a positive budget. I will know what questions to ask because as an attorney I know how to negotiate contracts that protect my clients. I will bring 28 years of business and legal experience to work for YOU, every day.
Are your medications right for YOU?
We bridge the gaps between you and your health care providers by keeping your medications safe and your prescribers informed. Dr. Latrice Roebuck, Pharm D., is a licensed pharmacist from Florida and a graduate of Nova Southeastern University. She currently works at a local hospital in the ICU. Roebuck is an advocate for patients who don’t understand their medications, who experience hospitalizations because of their medications, and patients who have difficulty getting their prescribers to address their concerns.

Freddy M. Suastegui What you should know about me:
What I will do for you:
I was raised in Hollywood and attended school locally (Orange Brook Elementary & Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory), I have worked locally and plan to raise my future children here. At the age of 19 I became the youngest purchaser at Pearl Art’s Design Images and was able to renegotiate with existing vendors to save 6% across the board as well as centralize shipping and transportation adding additional savings of over 15%. I have extensive experience in real estate and real estate appraising from my time at Access Appraisals and The Amoedo Group. The President of The Amoedo Group, Andres Amoedo III P.A. credits much of my success as the Account Executive from my ability to communicate, build relationships and create a team atmosphere, qualities I feel are important in representing the city of Hollywood properly. In this economic time in which we live in today, my belief is that we must work together in order to find the solutions that will rise us above our current financial short falls. My background in contract reviewing, negotiating, and fact finding will serve me well when making an informed decision on your behalf, but more importantly I believe reaching out to the community and creating dialogue is what will set me apart and will allow me to serve you to the best of my ability.
What you should know about me:
If elected by the great citizens of Hollywood, I can ensure my fellow citizens that I will work to protect the integrity of our city and hold accountability over the city budget. Although as a commissioner I will not have the authority to pass an ordinance alone and must obtain a majority vote to achieve my goals. I will work hard to bring a true transparent budget, raise morale and work with city staff and fellow commissioners to improve our city and pinpoint areas of needed improvement in order to manage our city more efficiently. A priority I feel is important to help the city get back on track and into a progressive state is to negotiate with the city employees, Police and Fire Departments in order to finalize a competitive contract. Although as a commissioner I will not be allowed as part of the negotiation process I will be as much involved in the process as possible to resolve this issue. As I stated before I believe in order to represent the city and the citizens of Hollywood properly, it will take an open line of communication. As such I intend to keep a direct line of contact with you the citizens of Hollywood and continue to reach out for feedback on all city issues. Thank you for your time and please feel free to contact me by email Freddy@ freddy2012.com or by phone (954) 639-6505.

Party with a Purpose (PWP) is a monthly networker/fundraiser sponsored by the Hollywood Gazette and hosted at venues located at Seminole Paradise. Each month local community leaders gather to network and support a different local non-profit. August’s Party with a Purpose benefited Covenant House of Broward. Covenant house is one of the state’s largest private agencies providing services to runaway and homeless youth. The event raised over five hundred dollars through admission fees and raffle ticket sales. Bluepoint Ocean Grill generously served an abundance of appetizers and attendees enjoyed the cocktail specials. Entertainment was provided by Scott Evans of Scott Evans Productions. The next PWP is on Thursday, September 20th at Renegade Barbecue Company to benefit the Community Enhancement Collaboration. 100% of the $10 admission fee is donated to the organization. All are welcome! -T.C. For more information or to RSVP, visit facebook.com/pwphollywood.

Local pharmacy offers comfort and compassion to every customer served BY BRENDA SILVA
Emerald Hills Pharmacy – Specialists in Tradition and T.L.C. In many chain pharmacies, customers are often approached with the question “are you picking up or dropping off?” in order to expedite the needs of today’s drive-thru, cell phone-attached, multitasking society. At Emerald Hills Pharmacy, time is better spent by truly greeting customers when they enter the old-fashioned store, usually with a warm smile and a heartfelt “how may we help you today?” It’s just this comforting attitude that’s at the heart of Emerald Hills Pharmacy, where initial meetings with first-time customers become caring relationships with longstanding clients. Owner/operator Rachel Novelli asserts, “Our personalized customer service can’t be beat by the big, chain pharmacies. Every customer is more than a number on an insurance card to us, and our service to them goes beyond
Friendly pharmacists Jacqui, Neil, and Irina always enjoy getting to know the customers they serve at Emerald Hills Pharmacy.
just filling a prescription. We really want to be an integral part of their ongoing
good health.” Emerald Hills Pharmacy is a full-line pharmacy, offering compounded and traditional medicine, along with providing alternate dosage forms (flavored liquids, lollipops, etc.) when necessary. In addition to the medications that highly trained pharmacists prepare, other products available include vitamins and herbal nutritional supplements to maintain the overall wellbeing of clients. Accompanying aromatherapy options, sure to calm, relieve stress and restore an inner balance with soothing scents include candles, oils, soaps, lotions, and mists. Organic and natural body products also include topical creams, lotions, and shampoos, as well as organic snacks and candy. Even though product options are diverse, Novelli says customers shouldn’t look for Coke or Snickers here, because she refuses to sell them. Proudly pointing out, “I do sell snacks, but I only sell healthy ones.” According to Novelli, her clientele is an eclectic mix, with everyone from older customers picking up maintenance medications, to residents of the surrounding neighborhood enjoying
the convenience factor of the store’s location. In addition, Emerald Hills Pharmacy sees its share of tourists passing through, usually in need of travel-sized staples or tasty treats for the beach. The Emerald Hills Pharmacy also attends to the needs of Hollywood’s four-legged customers. Novelli and her staff work with the nearby Humane Society and VCA Animal Hospital, and as such, often fill prescriptions for customers named Fluffy or Rover. Novelli also takes attention to customer service one step further by offering free delivery on prescriptions, for people and pets alike. Novelli sums up, “Our customers are our top priority. We want to get to know you, counsel you when necessary, and talk with you about your medications. We want customers to leave with a sense of how nicely they were treated, and how much their health matters to us. This is the most important thing we can do for the health of our customers.” For more information, call 954271-4088 or visit www. www. emeraldhillspharmacy.com

Rosie’s Italian Ices to close after 16 years
By Caron Conway Lead Correspondent The owners of Rosie’s Gourmet Italian Ices, a once-thriving business on Federal Highway, will be closing their doors for good in the next few months after 16 years, saying vagrancy and criminal activity in the neighborhood have driven away their customers. Scott Rosengarten, who owns the store at 1090 N. Federal Hwy. and another one in Pembroke Pines with business partner Jerry Baer, said conditions along the Federal Highway corridor between Hollywood Boulevard and Sheridan Street have steadily deteriorated. During the economic downturn of the past three and a half years, Rosengarten has seen a growing influx of vagrants in the vicinity. He largely blames the homeless shelter across the street at 1203 N. Federal Hwy., which is run by homeless advocate Sean Cononie’s COSAC Foundation, for his business dropping more than 80 percent. He said shelter residents loiter on Federal Highway and routinely congregate at Rosie’s outdoor tables, begging for change and scaring away customers. “The root of the problem is that homeless shelter. It doesn’t belong on your main thoroughfare,” Rosengarten said. “The city can’t do anything about the shelter. They’ve tried.” The Police Department increased enforcement efforts along the corridor last year, “and within six months, the drugs, the prostitutes, the pimps were all gone,” Rosengarten said. “In the last four months, it’s all back.” He said he’s had to call the police on many occasions because of vagrancy and solicitation in the area. On a recent Friday morning, Rosengarten entered his gated dumpster area and his shoe was pierced by a hypodermic needle. He found a drug addict passed out cold. “This is what I’ve had to go through just to sell a little happiness,” Rosengarten said. “It’s just drained me the last three and a half years.” Rosengarten said for nine months he had the business listed for sale, but every potential buyer was turned off after noticing an undesirable element roaming the street. Rosengarten said his landlady refuses to let him out of the last few months of his lease, which is up at the end of January. “I can no longer afford to pay that kind of rent for the amount of business I’m doing,” said Rosengarten, who took a second job, overseeing a valet parking service from midnight to 8 a.m., to make ends meet. Rosengarten said he doesn’t know what it would take to turn the neighborhood around, short of a “total transformation.” Two of the four City Commission candidates running Nov. 6 for the District 2 seat being vacated by Commissioner
Beam Furr said conditions along the Federal Highway corridor north of Hollywood Boulevard are a major concern that needs to be addressed by the city. Peter Hernandez said a police presence is the best deterrent to vagrancy and crime, and the public safety substation on Federal Highway at Fletcher Street should be manned by police personnel and not just fire-rescue personnel, as is now the case. Hernandez also feels the homeless problem needs to be addressed on a regional basis. “There are a lot of other cities in Broward County bringing their homeless here. Other police departments have admitted to doing so,” he said. “It’s just been tolerated and allowed to be done.” Hernandez’s opponent Tim Burton said Hollywood has ended up “bearing the brunt of the burden” of homeless individuals that other cities don’t want to deal with, and the City Commission needs to develop a long-term comprehensive plan of action to address the situation. “Small businesses are hurting,” Burton said. “Hollywood has been a mom-and-pop, family-friendly city for a long time. We haven’t been very friendly to them.” Circumstances have changed dramatically since the heyday of Rosie’s Gourmet Italian Ices, when the line of customers would wind around the building. Rosengarten, a Hollywood resident since 1993, has run into former customers who tell him they’re very sorry, but the environment surrounding the store makes them uneasy. Rosengarten misses the minivan moms and especially the kids who once patronized Rosie’s. “I used to come out and sit down with them,” he said. “I don’t see any of these people anymore.” For 16 years, Rosie’s Gourmet Italian Ices was known as a comfortable, welcoming, family-friendly oasis offering quality products at affordable prices, including Italian ices in a wide variety of flavors, hard and soft ice cream, banana splits, sundaes, shakes and soft pretzels. The original Rosie’s store, which was named after Rosengarten’s grandmother, opened in Pembroke Pines in 1994 and continues to do a thriving business. Rosie’s also has a retail division for fundraisers and special events. When the time comes to close the doors of the Hollywood store, Rosengarten will take with him fond memories of better days. “I saw good times there, sitting with all the people, happy and friendly,” he said. And while Rosengarten was initially devastated by the thought of giving up the Hollywood location, he is now relieved. “My life has actually gotten better, finally, in preparation of leaving this store,” he said. HEALTH & FITNESS
Back to school, back to YOU
by Shondelle-Solomon-Miles Well, the kids are back in school, which means it’s back to the routine. Soccer practice.Carpools. PTA meetings. Homework. Blah, Blah, Blah…. It seems like there is never a moment for YOU once that school bell ‘rings’. I’m sure you would agree that finding any ‘Me’ time to start or maintain a fitness or weight loss program seems nearly impossible most days. However, what I’ve learned in 16 years of fitness coaching, is that if you don’t demand time for yourself to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, no one will give it to you. And really, what better example can you show your kids than making your health and wellbeing a priority in your life. Here are a few tips to help get you started towards living a healthier and more active life! 1. Many mothers say: “With work and the kids I don’t have time to exercise”. Here’s what I say: “You can always go to bed twenty minutes
earlier so that you can wake up 20 minutes earlier to take a brisk walk, ‘pop-in’ an exercise video, or take a brief jog on the treadmill, which actually does serve a purpose other than a clothes hanger. An effective workout does not have to be a long workout, however it does have to be intense. Here’s an example: 1 min of pushups, 1 minute of squats, 1 minute or burpees, 1 minute of dips, 1 minute plank. Repeat this cycle 2-3 times depending upon your fitness level. 2. When you prepare your children’s lunch, prepare one for yourself that’s filled with healthy snacks you can keep at work and in your car so you never have to go more than three hours without a meal. Examples include: celery and peanut butter, hardboiled egg filled with hummus, or plain Greek yogurt with fresh nuts and berries. 3. Take a homework break by performing a 15 minute exercise session with your kids. Your kids will appreciate the unexpected activity and you’ll burn some extra calories. Here’s a fun game. Grab a deck of cards and assign an exercise to each suite (hearts=jumping jacks, spades=pushups). Draw a card and
perform the number of reps that are on the card. For example, an 8 of hearts would be 8 jumping jacks. Royalty cards and aces are 20 reps, and jokers are water breaks. Your kids will love this game and you will burn some extra calories.
shape is ‘challenging’, especially without a support group. Take turns with a friend or with your husband watching the children while you workout, or if that’s not an option, join a program that is kid friendly.
4. During the weekend, plan family outings that involve physical activity. This will allow you to get in an extra day or two of exercise, your kids will get away from the TV and the video games, and you’ll get a chance to spend quality time together as a family. My recommendations: bike riding, bowling, kayaking and beach volleyball!
7. Join the 8-week ‘Back to SchoolBack To You’ Body Transformation program, (which begins Sept. 10th) so you can receive the guidance, instruction and accountability necessary to stay on track and reach your goals efficiently and effectively. Check it out here at www.CF954BacktoSchool.com
5. Unfortunately, convenience tends to take priority over healthy habits. To ensure you and your family are eating healthy, plan and prepare your meals on the weekend when you have some extra time. Season and zip lock chicken breast and fish filets. Cut up fresh fruits and veggies. Cook a pot of chili or spaghetti…with whole wheat pasta of course. Even better, involve your children in these activities and you’ll be teaching them healthy habits to last for a lifetime.
If you just choose one of these strategies and implement it TODAY, you’ll be moving in the right direction. Remember, you don’t have to take an all or none approach; doing anything is better than doing nothing at all. Shondelle Solomon-Miles is the owner of Synergize Home of CrossFit 954. You can reach her or schedule a FREE consultation by visiting www. CrossFit954.com or by calling 954-9244465.

HEALTH & BEAUTY
Body sculpting treatments now offered at Beauty of Wax By Erin Scissors Beauty of Wax, a local Hollywood beauty treatment destination for locals for over ten years now offers much more than full body waxing massage and spa services for both men and women. Maribel Ruiz, Beauty of Wax owner has been studying extensively over the past year to become licensed in body sculpting treatments, also known as non surgical/ invasive liposuction treatments. So, how does it work? This procedure is done in three treatments; additional treatments are available and dependent on the individual and their focus areas of improvement. Each session is customized to each individual and their goals after a questionnaire has been filled out and clients have had an initial consultation with one of the 3 specially trained experts on staff. These Body Sculpting treatments include a combination of techniques including Ultracavitation (known as non
invasive liposuction to shape the body and reduce the appearance of cellulite), Vacuum Therapy (used for detoxifying), Radio Frequency (controllable heats contract collagen and generation of new collagen), Lymphatic Drainage (creates a negative energy charge to help break up protein clusters that clog the lymphatic system). Passive Gymnastics (muscular exercise induced by electrostimulation) as well as additional treatments that focus on tightening of the skin. Currently, Beauty of Wax is the only salon in Hollywood that is offering these treatments. There are other non-invasive liposuction offices however; these clinics use lasers, which can be more painful and potentially less effective. Once satisfied with the results (generally in 3-6 sessions) there is a maintenance option of returning to Beauty of Wax one time per month in order to keep the area firm and continue to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Beauty of Wax is running a special for three Body Sculpting treatments for $149.00. Beauty of Wax is located at 2029-A Tyler Street, Hollywood 33020. Call 954.922.2252 to book an appointment, free parking is available.
