Do you want your pet to be “Pet of the Month”?
This is Maxx, a 4 year old Shit Tzu. His parents are James Leider and Todd Scher. “We live in Hollywood at West Lake Village. Maxx is the sweetest dog ever, and he loves his toys. He is super obedient and always behaves well. Every night he waits for his treats before bed and takes his time chewing them. He goes with his daddy to work every day but sleeps all day long. Sweet life, wish I could do it too!”

Hollywood candidates to make a ‘bald statement’ Sept. 15 More candidates pledge to ‘take it off’ and volunteer to fight children’s cancer Rick Valdez, candidate for Hollywood City Commissioner (District 1) has committed to go bald for the St. Baldrick’s event taking place at Mickey Byrnes on September 15th. He joins candidates Justin Serian and Frank Vargas as ‘shavees’ for the event. Valdez Several other candidates are supporting this event by volunteering including Mayor Peter Bober, Ralph Kenol, Kevin Biederman, Edward Holodak, Linda Sherwood, Freddy Manuel Suategui, Vargas Traci Callari and her two
daughters, and Cliff Germano. Linda Sherwood’s husband and son, Freddy Manuel Suategui’s brother and friends, and Traci Callari’s husband and son have all signed up to be ‘shavees’ as well. Dick Blattner and Freddy Manuel Suategui have generously donated funds to the Hollywood Gazette team. St. Baldrick’s Foundation is an organization that gathers friends and families together in local communities to shave their heads and raise funds for research grants to treat children with cancer. Of course, the head shaving is not the only option. There are other ways to be a part of St. Baldrick’s including volunteering time and monetary donations. There is still time to sign up to be a ‘shavee’ or to donate to one of the participants! For more information, visit http://www.st. baldricks.org/events/ mickeybyrnes -T.C.

Bluepoint Ocean Grill hosts July 19 Party with a Purpose to benefit Gilda’s Club of South Florida PHOTOS BY MELISSA DONALDSON
Party with a Purpose (PWP) is a monthly networker/fundraiser sponsored by the Hollywood Gazette and hosted at venues located at Seminole Paradise. Each month local community leaders gather to network and support a different local non-profit. July’s Party with a Purpose benefited Gilda’s Club of South Florida. Gilda’s Club is a community providing free cancer support for women, men, children, and teens with all types of cancer and their families and friends. The event raised nearly eight hundred dollars through admission fees and raffle ticket sales. Bluepoint Ocean Grill generously served an abundance of appetizers and attendees enjoyed the cocktail specials. Entertainment was provided by Scott Evans of Scott Evans Productions. The next PWP is on Thursday, August 23rd at Bluepoint Ocean Grill to benefit the Covenant House of Broward County. 100% of the $10 admission fee is donated to the organization. All are welcome! -T.C. our community is important for making a well-informed vote. Due to the large number of candidates running for the Commission, and in an effort to provide each candidate with an equal opportunity to respond to the public’s questions, the forum will be held on two nights. Candidates for District 1, District 2, and District 3 commission seats will attend on Wednesday, August 29th at the Hollywood Center of Performing Arts located at 1770 Monroe Street in Hollywood. Candidates for District 4, District 5, and District 6 commission seats will attend on Tuesday, August 28th at the Boulevard Heights Community Center located at 6770 Garfield Street in Hollywood. The candidates for the Mayoral seat will attend both nights. SCHOOL NEWS
Price of school meals to increase in 2012/13 school year
untry?
Anywh
For the first time in four years, the price of school meals will increase for the 2012/13 school year. The School District's last increase occurred in 2008. The price increase will be 10 cents for paid breakfast and lunch meals for elementary, middle, high and center schools; including adult meal prices. Breakfast will cost $1.20 in elementary schools and $1.30 in middle and high schools. Lunch will cost $2 in elementary schools, $2.35 in middle schools and $2.50 in high schools. For adults, breakfast will cost $1.80 and lunch would be $2.75. The reduced meal price of 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch will not change. The District's Food & Nutrition Services Department is selfsupporting and non-profit. The revenue produced by the increase will ensure that the Food & Nutrition Services Department can continue to operate independently. All breakfasts and lunches offered in the School District are nutritious balanced meals that exceed all federal and USDA nutritional guidelines to promote healthy lifestyles. For more information, visit (http://www.broward.k12.fl.us/ foodservice).

ELECTION news
Meet Hollywood’s District 5 Candidates
In April 2012, the Hollywood Gazette began giving City Commission candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves to the community in advance of the November 6
election. Each month will feature candidates from one district, followed by mayoral candidates. This month, District 5 candidates are featured.
Kevin Biederman
Judy Bates What you should know about me: I have lived in Hollywood for 36 of the last 47 years as a resident of Driftwood and Boulevard Heights. I am a 25 year property owner and resident of Boulevard Heights. Many of my family members live in the Driftwood neighborhood. I have owned and operated my own business in Hollywood. I am along time active member of the Boulevard Heights Neighborhood Association. From 1998 as a member of the Steering Committee for Boulevard Heights for the City of Hollywood Neighborhood Master Plan to my last position of holding the office of

president of our association. I am also a member of the Driftwood Civic Association. What will I do for you: All my votes as a commissioner will be after I have thoroughly researched the item. My vote will be fiscally responsible and in the best interests of the residents of District 5 and Hollywood. I will work to increase our property values and improve our standard of living. I have no political or personal ties to any developers, lawyers, unions, or city employees. There will be no issue of a conflict of interest. I will be able to vote on all items that come before the City Commission.
What you should know about me: I have been a resident of Hollywood (both in Boulevard Heights and Driftwood) for 27 years. I met my wife, Donna, at a Florida Jaycees Conference more than 15 years ago and we share a beautiful teenage daughter, Ciara, and our son (our dog), Chase. I chose to live in Hollywood because this was a vibrant family community with affordable homes and robust commercial growth and friendly neighbors. As a resident of Hollywood, family-man, community activist, current Commissioner of the Central Broward Water Control District (CBWCD), since 2000, and entrepreneur for more than 20 years, I take pride in working with organizations that enhance the quality of life for people in our community. As Commissioner of the CBWCD, I have assisted Hollywood in receiving nearly 3 million dollars in capital improvement projects and assisted in alleviating drainage concerns. I recently assisted District 5 to receive capital improvement funds to create 3 certified wildlife habitats. Being a leader of several community organizations and by serving on various City Boards, attending meetings and volunteering my time to worthy endeavors, I have obtained a wealth of knowledge and experience that will enable me to immediately start working for our neighborhoods and our City.
What will I do for you: As Hollywood Commissioner, I will work diligently to encourage residents and business owners in District 5 to become more involved in the City. I will work to strengthen our City ordinances, holding banks and investors accountable for properties (possible state legislation required) and research federal or private funding opportunities to assist homeowners to preserve their property. I will research and implement national “best practice” strategies to address Hollywood’s concerns (budget, public safety, sidewalks, streets, revitalization efforts, stronger neighborhoods, economic development, redevelopment, etc.). I plan to evaluate our City’s policies and procedures to ensure they are resident and business friendly and review contracts to confirm that the City’s vendors are fulfilling their obligations. I will capitalize on my relationships with partnering agencies to install infrastructure that will keep our streets and properties flood-free and vehicle and pedestrian friendly. While I understand the many other challenges our City faces, I am committed to not just identifying problems, rather working with residents, business owners and others to identify creative and viable solutions. At the heart of this is a belief that we must all work to build the economic foundations of the City of Hollywood. Working together is essential to our community.
Francisco Vargas What you should know about me: My name is Francisco Vargas. I started my education at Pedro H. Urena National University (UNPHU) in 1983, and graduated in 1989 with a Major in accounting and auditing. UNPHU was definitely the right choice for me. My undergraduate experiences were fantastic. I really enjoyed being introduced to an intense level of academic challenges, and a lot of unfamiliar, but friendly people. I had a great group of close friends in college, and we spent a lot of time together. In 2001 I completed my master degree (MS) in science of secondary education at Mercy College in New York. In 1987 I met my wife Rosie at my sister’s house, and after 2 years we married in November 1989. In 1990 we moved to New York City and had two wonderful girls, Aixa 19 years old and Alexis 13 years old. I have spent the past 18 years working as a mathematics teacher in the public school system between the New York City Department of Education and Broward County Public Schools. My wife Rosie has spent the past 20 years working in the healthcare system, she has worked at the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York and Healthworkx in Florida. Rosie and I moved to the wonderful Sunshine State in 2004 due to a teaching opportunity. The interaction
with students on a daily basis definitely keeps me young and has influenced my insights for teaching/advising. I hope this helps you get to know me and from a personal standpoint. Thanks for reading! What will I do for you: I will commit to renewing our community by recognizing that solutions to our greatest challenges can only be rooted in common ground and the strength of our civic life. The people of our community do not want local government to solve all our problems; we know that personal responsibility, character, imagination, diligence, hard work and faith ultimately determine individual achievement. But we also know that at every turning point in our nation’s history, we have demonstrated the love of our country by overcoming challenges whether ending slavery, fighting two world wars for the cause of freedom or sending a man to the moon. Today our community must unite again to help our most vulnerable residents get back on their feet and to restore the vitality of both urban centers and family bonds, because the success of each depends on the success of the other. If we choose to change, just imagine what we can do. We have a choice to make. We can choose to stay with the current failed course, or we can choose a path that builds upon the best of who and what we are, and reflects our highest values. We can have more of the same, or rise together and create a new kind of local government. The time for change has come, and this community must seize it.

MUNICIPAL NEWS
Mike Ryan: “Tax cheaters win big in Tallahassee…residents lose” Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Davie and Sunrise, have assigned detectives to help BCPA investigate fraud BY Sunrise Mayor Mike Ryan At a time when local governments are facing tremendous financial challenges, there are those who cheat the system, refuse to pay their fair share, and make each of us shoulder a greater burden. The cheaters seem to keep winning. Florida law gives Homestead Exemptions and Save Our Homes protections to permanent residents. Those who claim homestead exemptions but rent the property or use it as a vacation home are cheating all of us. According to the Broward County Property Appraiser (BCPA) website, “a Homestead Exemption and the Save our Homes protections [for a single property] can easily be worth over $3,000 in taxes each year.” If cheaters get caught, they must pay up to 10 years of back taxes plus penalties of
50% of the unpaid taxes plus 15% interest per year on the unpaid taxes. Money recovered is a direct financial benefit to cities, School Board, Broward County — and you. Every dollar of real estate tax is divided roughly amongst a city (25%), the County (25%), the School Board (38%) and the remainder to other taxing authorities, according to the Broward County Property Appraiser, Lori Parrish. Catching cheaters, though, requires tips, data, and, sometimes, laborious investigative work. Harvesting data from available sources and incentivizing the community is necessary if we are to catch cheaters efficiently. Senate Bill 778 proposed to give rewards for tips and require “residential condominium or cooperative” associations to provide a list of rental properties to the property appraiser’s office. Seems reasonable. The legislation proposed a reward of 20% of the total recovery, not to exceed $500. Seems reasonable. With a list of rentals, the property appraiser could then crosscheck the information against the database of claimed exemptions. There was no penalty if the association failed to cooperate. Instead, the legislation assumed we would all agree cheaters shouldn’t win. Seems reasonable.

Guess what happened? Cheaters won again. SB 778 died in a Senate committee meeting during last session of the Legislature. This was not the first time the idea meant to help us locally died in Tallahassee. Whatever the reasons, the cheaters won big again. Cities, Public Needs To Help Each year, the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Fraud Investigative Unit investigates thousands of cases. They have 15 employees dedicated to recovering taxpayer dollars; last year they completed over 12,000 cases. Since 2005, over $55 million has been “back-taxed” and nearly $36 million collected. Everyone agrees there is much more that must be done. The millions of dollars in fraud yet to be re-captured could go to services you and I are paying for – schools, parks, libraries, police, fire and essential services. When the cheaters don’t pay, you and I pay more to cover their costs. Cooperation between water utilities and the BCPA can help identify those properties being rented. Some cities, like Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Davie and Sunrise, have assigned detectives to help BCPA investigate fraud. The City of Sunrise recently passed a Resolution requesting homeowner and condominium
associations to voluntarily produce a list of rental properties. For Sunrise, tips are already coming in. You should care what every city is doing. Even when another city helps to successfully uncover fraud, it helps you. Therefore, we need a permanent, sustained and cooperative effort throughout the County. We need to make sure every municipality and every governmental unit are working together to help the BCPA catch homestead exemption cheaters each year. We need someone to revive SB 778 or inspire similar legislation to encourage community cooperation. In the meantime, you can help the Broward County Property Appraiser. You can call the anonymous tip line (954-3576900) or report anonymously on-line. There is much debate over the right level of property taxes. However, everyone can agree on this basic principle – Homestead Exemption cheaters should never win. Michael J. Ryan was elected Mayor of Sunrise in August 2010. He holds a B.B.A., majoring in Finance, from The George Washington University, and a Juris Doctorate, summa cum laude, from The Case Western Reserve School of Law.

From the Western medicine point of view, good health is defined by the absence of disease. To reduce the risk of manifesting a condition, it puts all emphasis on physical measures like exercise, diet and hygiene. However, how often have you been told there is nothing unusual in the results of your lab tests, yet still you don’t feel healthy and energized?

Emerald Hills resident leads movement to create new middle school
By Caron Conway Lead Correspondent A movement is underway to establish a public middle school in the Hollywood Hills/ Emerald Hills area that supporters say will not only benefit neighborhood students and parents but all property owners there. Spearheading the grassroots movement is Daniel Metsch, an eight-year resident of Emerald Hills and the father of two children entering the third grade and kindergarten at Hollywood Metsch Hills Elementary. Metsch started leading the charge for a neighborhood middle school about four months ago, initiating an online petition requesting that the Broward County School Board create a middle school to complete the public education offerings in the area that also include Hollywood Hills High School. So far, Metsch has collected 180 signatures, mostly from Hills-area neighbors, and he expects many more after residents return from summer vacation. He said no one he’s spoken to opposes a middle school in the Hills area, and many people are surprised to learn there isn’t already one there. Metsch said many Hollywood Hills/Emerald Hills students attend Attucks Middle School, which is located to the east on the other side of Interstate 95 at 3500 N. 22nd Ave. “You want your schools in your area. People don’t want to make that drive,” Metsch said. “Out of convenience, out of fairness, there should be a middle school here.” The schools attended by Hollywood students in grades 6 through 8 number five schools east of I-95 and two schools west of Florida’s Turnpike. The Hills neighborhoods lie west of I-95 and east of North 56th Avenue, between North 42nd Street and Washington Street. Sheridan Street divides Emerald Hills from Hollywood Hills to the south. Metsch wants the School Board to either build a new school to serve Hills-area students in grades 6 though 8 or convert two existing elementary school facilities to K-8 schools. Metsch said a neighborhood option for middle school students would benefit the entire Hills community. “Getting or creating a middle school or two for the Hollywood Hills/Emerald Hills area isn’t just about education, but also about property values,” he said. “And this affects everyone in the Hollywood Hills/Emerald Hills area—those with children and those without.” Metsch said the lack of a middle school serving Hills-area students is “definitely a reason for people moving out” of the two
neighborhoods. “People move to areas with good schools and move from areas with bad schools or no schools,” he said. Realtors cite the quality of neighborhood schools as a primary consideration for homebuyers who have children or plan to start a family. In general, buyers tend to equate higher-rated schools with a lower neighborhood crime rate. The vast majority of lowperforming schools in Broward County are located in neighborhoods where the home value is below the countywide median. Public schools in Florida are graded each year based primarily upon achievement data from the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test (FCAT). The 2012 school grades released in July place Hollywood among the top municipalities in Broward County, with 13 A-rated public elementary and middle schools.

June 9 – August 19, 2012 Internationally recognized artist Nathan Sawaya creates awe-inspiring works out of the most unlikely media – LEGO® bricks. His work is exhibited around the world, and he has appeared on such TV shows as The Today Show and The Colbert Report. Exhibitions of Sawaya’s work have broken attendance records at the Center and at museums around the world. The Interactive Play Area adjacent to the exhibition allows visitors to make their own LEGO creations. ___________________________________________________________________________ Florida Brick Creation Challenge: Residents enter their own LEGO sculptures in this fun state-wide contest and exhibition. Pieces are displayed in the Center’s galleries during the last two weeks of The Art of the Brick, and prizes will be awarded during a celebration at the close of the exhibition, Sunday, August 19.
