He has shown great compassion when encountering with people who are homeless or in desperate need of social services. Chung has immersed himself in training opportunities that have broadened his knowledge directly pertaining to individuals in need. Some of these courses relate to Crisis Intervention and becoming a Homeless Outreach Team Specialst. Chung also partners with the Broward Outreach Center and, on a regular basis, has found housing for individuals who otherwise would be homeless. Chung has gone above and beyond his work duties by routinely working to assist these individuals and by seeking assistance pertaining to emergency lodging and food. Since the beginning of the Police Department’s Family Reunification Program, Officer Chung has worked to reunify over 30 individuals with family members who have agreed to assist in housing these subjects. The Hollywood Code Compliance Division also received the City of Hollywood Diamond Team Award for service. BY DAVID VOLZ

This is the highest award the City of Hollywood gives out to an individual or group who has gone above and beyond in providing service. John Chidsey, the city’s Code Compliance Manager, said he was glad his team received the award and said

the work his team does is often hard and thankless. He believes the work is very important because it contributes to safer buildings and homes in Hollywood. Chidsey wants to develop a home inspection program in Hollywood because he is concerned that too many landlords are

not properly maintaining their property and buildings. “There is a strong sense of camaraderie among members of the Code Compliance Division and I’m very proud of the work they are doing,” Chidsey said.

Housing rehab program completes new home for longtime Washington Park resident 85-year-old Cleola Haywood has dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com a new home. Her original house had fallen into disrepair and through Hollywood’s Housing Rehabilitation & Replacement Program, it was determined that the best thing to do was to demolish it and build a new one. The new structure is on her property in the Washington Park neighborhood where she has lived since 1962. Haywood has raised a family and held various jobs during a long life in Hollywood. The new home is energy efficient and accessible for a disabled person. “I’m grateful to have a new house. I’ve lived here a long time. The old house needed a lot of expensive repairs so it made more sense to tear down the house and build a new one,” said Haywood. It took about six months to demolish and rebuild the home and the project cost roughly $151,000. The City of Hollywood rehabilitates around 15 homes a year with a goal to BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

Haywood had lived with her family at the location for more than 30 years. Her income was less than 25 percent of the area’s median income and her mortgage payment exceeded 30 percent of her gross income, the upper level of HUD’s affordable housing threshold. By participating in the Program, she was able to fold her existing mortgage debt into a mortgage for the new home, making her new payments more affordable. A dedication ceremony for the new home was held and city leaders participated. Leaders from the Washington Park neighborhood were present. After the ceremony, people were given a tour of the new home. Commission wants more time to decide whether additional policing in Emerald Hills is necessary BY DAVID VOLZ

Hollywood commissioners are still not sure whether or not to create an Emerald Hills Safety Enhancement District. In light of new questions raised a recent meeting, the City Commission postponed a decision on the matter until the first meeting in July. Under the plan that is under consideration, the 512 homeowners in Emerald Hills would probably pay $250 annually for the additional patrols. The neighborhood does not have a homeowners association, so the commission must approve the creation of a special

The residents who would be part of this proposed district live in the area from North 46 Avenue to North 56 Avenue and from Stirling Rd. to Sheridan St. There have been off-duty patrols in the past but some residents no longer pay for them. Those who do pay for the patrols pay $700 a year. Members of the commission want to see how the homeowners feel. Homeowners will get a chance to vote on the matter with a ballot they will receive in the mail. A large number of residents came to voice their opinions. Some want more police patrols and described being burglarized. Others said they do not

Hollywood City Attorney Jeffrey Sheffel asked to resign BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

It appears that the City Hollywood will soon be looking for a new

attorney. During the comments portion of the Commission meeting, Commissioner Dick Blatter called for the resignation of City Attorney Jeffrey Sheffel. Blatter said that because of ongoing concerns and problems involving Sheffel the attorney’s office Sheffel should resign. Vice Mayor Traci Callari agreed that it was time for Sheffel to leave and that the City should move forward. She said there have been significant complaints from human resources about how Sheffel treats members of staff as well as concerns about authorized cost overruns. She suggested that if Sheffel were to say, he should be demoted and someone else appointed to be his supervisor. Commissioner Peter Hernandez also voiced concern about cost overruns involving the City Attorney’s office.sheffel Hollywood City Attorney Jeffrey Sheffel asked to resign Mayor Josh Levy offered the strongest support for Sheffel “I have confidence in Sheffel and I think he should stay. He has a great deal of institutional knowledge and expertise and he knows a lot about Hollywood,” said Levy. Commissioner Debra Case agreed with Levy and said Sheffel has a great deal to offer Hollywood as City Attorney and should remain in his position. Sheffel said he believed it might be time to leave. “I believe strongly that it is the client’s right to choose an attorney,” he said. “I love Hollywood but sometimes relationships change.” Sheffel said he did not believe he had the support of the Commission any longer. Sheffel told the Commission he could address concerns they had about the expenditures. He told the Commission he had enjoyed serving as attorney and had worked through financial urgency and other issues but that he did not to work in a situation where he was not wanted. Following a break during the meeting, Sheffel met with City Manager Wazir Ishmael. They developed 10

June 2017

a separation agreement that Sheffel was willing to accept. After this was announced Levy stated again that he believed in Sheffel and that he should stay. “This will be a terrible loss for the city,” he said. Case also said she wanted Sheffel to stay and voiced her support for him.

It should be noted that at this point and time Sheffel is still the City Attorney for Hollywood and continues to provide legal counsel. He has not resigned or been fired. At an upcoming meeting, a separation agreement will be discussed by the Commission. Hollywood City Attorney Jeffrey

Sheffel was arrested earlier this year in March for on DUI charges. According to the Miami Herald, “Sheffel, 57, was charged with DUI with alcohol or drugs, first offense; DUI with damage to property or person; and driving on a sidewalk or bike path. He posted $1,500 bond.”

LIFELONG LEARNING

Lifelong Learning Institute offers intergenerational, free learning programs for retired adults at NSU Summer 2017 programming runs from June-September, is free and open to the community. Nova Southeastern University's Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) gives local residents another reason to look forward to retirement. To enrich the lives of its members and the community, LLI provides an educational environment for mature adults in South Florida offering programs that promote intellectual stimulation, physical well being, and social growth. Through a unique, inviting environment, the LLI offers challenging educational lectures and social opportunities to connect with other like-minded individuals through field trips and special events. LLI members can take advantage of opportunities to audit classes at the university. Such experiences offer true intergenerational learning while sitting side by side with NSU students and faculty, sharing and learning from each other.

Who attends LLI classes and programs?

The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) is longstanding at Nova Southeastern University (NSU). Founded in 1977, the LLI serves lifelong learning passions of retired

adults. The LLI was founded to complete the NSU dream of education spanning a whole lifetime, from preschool to older-adult learning. Many LLI members are retired professionals such as lawyers, doctors, business people, and teachers, or just active people who want to keep learning. Campus membership is about 50 percent female and 50 percent male with an age range from 50 to 90 and an average age of 75.

Academic Calendar

The LLI offers a slightly reduced schedule during the summer with classes running from June - September. The main academic calendar runs from October through May. Classes are offered Monday through Thursday, two times a day. Some members attend all classes every day, while others select those that best match their personal interests and schedules.

A fitness program is also offered in their classroom twice a week at no cost to members, an effort made possible by the a sponsorship from A Family Member HomeCare.

New location

Having outgrown it's previous space, Lifelong Learning Institute has recently relocated to NSU East Campus Alumni Hall 3100 SW 9th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315. To welcome learners to their new home, LLI is hosting a 'Fall Welcome Week' from October 9-12. Peter Matcau — a Real Cut-Up

BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT

42-year old Peter Matcau has lived in Hollywood since 1980. He’s what I call a “lifer.” Peter’s family moved from Canada following his Grandfather who made the trek a few years prior. His Grandfather, by the way, opened the first Romanian Church in the Hip Hamlet in the late 70’s. That original church (First Romanian Baptist Church) ultimately spawned into Grace Romanian where Peter both sings in the choir and plays in the orchestra (guitar/trumpet). Peter’s foray into the arts and specifically his unique brand of mosaic/ mixed media started during high-school when he spent the summers working with his Uncle laying tile and marble. Fascinated by the shards, leftover pieces and remnants, he’d bring them home and create mosaics. “I didn’t get into art seriously until after I graduated and took some graphic

and digital design courses—that sort of kick-started the process.” But it was his drinking buddies that helped him realize his ultimate ambitions. “My friends would come over to my apartment to hang out. They’d bring six packs or cartons of beer. And there was just something about the colors, the designs and the sturdiness of the cardboard that basically got me hording the material.” During that period, one of those friends was involved in the opening of an art gallery in Fort Lauderdale. He

asked Peter if he would create something for their grand opening. The exhibit was to be centered on Director Wes Anderson’s film: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. “I liked the flick, had no paint but plenty of those cartons…” Peter created two pieces for the exhibit and his “career” was launched. Since then Peter has essentially been involved in all my Art Extravaganzas and his works sell. Because of the time and labor involved, however, he typically works on a commission basis. As I’ve mentioned here before, he was just commissioned to create the cover art for Richie Cole’s upcoming CD. (see page 11) In regards to Hollywood, Peter told this writer; “I’ve watched the art scene really develop these past few years. Especially with the murals and galleries popping up—a scene is igniting…” (Editor’s Note: Peter wanted a special shout-out to Lisa “PRL” Zomaro for both introducing the two us and for providing an abundance of beer cartons/boxes)

Young Circle Roadway Study Results The community is invited to a meeting to hear the recommendations from the “Young Circle Roadway Study.” The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency and Toole Design Group are finalizing a Roadway Feasibility Study for Young Circle. The study examined traffic flow and patterns, analyzed the block structure, and explored the possibility for improved functionality. Public input was gathered at two meetings at the Fred Lippman MultiPurpose Center on May 15th and May 18th. Results of the study will be presented to the City Commission on Wednesday, June 21st and to the public at a meeting set for Thursday, June 22nd at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center at 6:00 p.m. For additional information, please contact Ivan Cabrera at 954.924.2980 or via email at icabrera@hollywoodfl.org.

Brightline trains to connect passengers from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami or W. Palm Beach in 30 min. Brightline, the only privately funded express intercity passenger rail service in the United States, recently took delivery of two new trains that will provide service in South Florida later this year. Named BrightGreen and BrightOrange after the signature color schemes of the train cars, the sets were delivered simultaneously after a 3,052-mile journey across the country from Siemens Rolling Stock manufacturing hub in Sacramento, California. Their arrival was in celebration of National Train Day, Sat., May 13. Brightline stations are set to open throughout South Florida later this year connecting Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and eventually, Orlando. The trains will take passengers from Ft. Lauderdale to West Palm Beach or Miami in 30 minutes. The Ft. Lauderdale station is located at N.W. 2nd Ave, between W. Broward Blvd. & N.W. 4th St. Brightline is committed to leading private investment toward transportation infrastructure benefiting the public by providing a much-needed, hospitality-driven alternative to South Florida’s congested roadways. Trip fares have not yet been announced, according to their web site they are “working to make it comparable to taking the car (think gas and parking) without all the hassles.” They will announce prices closer to launching later this year and plan to offer weekly, monthly and annual passes, plus Multi-Trip Packs at discounted rates. Each train abounds with innovations and comfortable features including automatic level boarding, wide

aisles exceeding ADA compliance, multiple outlets for devices and complimentary, robust Wi-Fi, powered by multiple antennas in every car. The company is anticipating a grand opening and official launch of its service this fall. Combined, the two Brightline trains are approximately 1,000 feet long, each foot symbolizes the 1,000 Siemens employees who helped build them. They are 100 percent Buy America compliant, manufactured with components from more than 40 different U.S. suppliers across 20 states. BrightGreen and BrightOrange now join

BrightBlue and BrightPink at Workshop b, Brightline’s 12-acre railroad operations facility in West Palm Beach. Workshop b is now home to four trains with BrightRed, the fifth trainset, arriving late-June. Workshop b provides over 120 jobs, serving as the on-duty location for train crews as well as the site where trains are maintained, cleaned and stored. There are four tracks within the facility, two of which are covered and one featuring a 500-foot long maintenance pit underneath for performing daily inspections and service.

Party Like an Animal at the Humane Society Looking for a COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT birthday darlene@hollywoodgazette.com party idea that combines fun, giving to charity and adorable puppies? Well then, you're barking up the right tree. Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) has long been known as a compassionate animal shelter and adoption agency for unwanted and stray animals, but how did birthday parties get added to their services? “Parties came about after a parent from our Kids’ Club asked if they could have their child’s birthday at the shelter,” explains Katherine Tutt, Education Programs Coordinator for Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC). “That was nine years ago! After that, we just took off with the idea and birthday parties have been an activity at HSBC ever since.” Birthday parties at the Humane Society are perfect for animal lovers of any age. “Parties are offered for ages 6 and up. We have had Sweet 16 parties, a 60th birthday and even an 80-year-old celebrated with us,” says Tutt. Party guests arrive to a decorated party room with banners and balloons. “There are three different party packages to choose from,” Tutt says. “All include a decorated party room, staff to run the party, a tour of the shelter, goody bags and cake!” From there the packages differ from number of guests to food to number of activities. The entire party is pet-themed; from the décor to the activities. Guests can choose from 'party pups' or cat-themed tableware. Some of the more memorable parties Tutt recalls are with The Forever Family Bella Group, an organization providing loving foster care for children and teens. “They have celebrated birthdays with us several times,” Tutt says. “At those parties we celebrate all the children, and it is a wonderful experience to have so many people from different walks of life come together and enjoy the animals.” All birthday parties include a tour of the BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

shelter. There are also gold and platinum collar parties available. With these, the birthday child chooses two activities from a list. These include:

Special Animal Guest – Enjoy hands-on time with some of the adorable shelter pets. Pet Bowl Decorating – Choose a colored pet food bowl and decorate your own, whether it’s for a pet at home or the shelter animals. No-Bake Dog Treats – Guests work in teams to making dog treats to feed shelter dogs during the tour. Creative Clay – Each guest receives a clay packet from which they sculpt and decorate to make their favorite animal out of air dry clay. Bandana Decorating – Guests choose a plain-color bandana and design it for a special dog. Pet Tag – Using Shrinky Dinks, guests design their own pet I.D. tag. Dog Breed Bingo – Guests play B-I-N-G-O for prizes. Build-A-Pet (additional $10 per pet) – Guests choose and stuff a pet (dog, cat or rabbit) to take home. Included are an assortment of unstuffed plush pets, poly-fill to stuff them with and an adoption certificate. What about adoptions? Tutt says it isn’t an uncommon occurrence but doesn’t happen after every party. “We do give the birthday child’s family a $50 adoption discount coupon that they or a friend can use,” Tutt says. “The coupon is valid for a year." People can book a party by calling Katherine Tutt directly at 954-266-6875, or by filling out a form on HSBC’s website under the Education Programs section: HumaneBroward.com.

Hollywood Hills' top trumpet player likes to toot her own horn Jennifer Gonzalez CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com is a leading musician in the Hollywood Hills High School band program. A junior, she will be the section leader for the trumpets next year. She is proud of the band’s accomplishments over the past year. “We had straight superior ratings in a marching band event,” said Gonzalez. “Being in band is like being in a big family. We work hard but we have fun. I've enjoyed being in band since my freshman year.” She is looking forward to being a leader in the trumpet section as well and hopes to help all the trumpet players achieve success. BY DAVID VOLZ

by Nick Vagnoni for David Svenson I bought canned hearts of palm, a jar of purple Peruvian olives, and a little can of tuna from Spain that would slice my knuckle and bleed it into my sink; I saw a tired family with hospital visitor stickers on their shirts, and in the cut fruit cooler, between wedges of pineapple and tubs of chunked fruit, a four-pack of Natural Light tallboys, with one gone missing from its plastic snare. Did you see who stole that air-conditioned beer? Who found the least fetid steak? Were you there to sympathize with the armed security guard? Did you see the young couple arguing in line, him waving her off as she stormed away, her coming back to ask if he needed help carrying their bag of charcoal? And did you see, on the way out, across from the scale, the Western Union forms, and the copy machine destroyed by the desperate scanning of so many photo IDs and passports and water bills, perched on the coin counting machine, tall as that missing can of beer, a candle for the sacred heart unlit then, but already burned to its base, and on it the words have mercy on us... glowing furnace of charity... have mercy... Nick Vagnoni teaches undergraduate writing courses at Florida International University, where he received his MFA in creative writing. He was born and raised in Key West, and he studied at New College of Florida prior to moving to Miami. Last year, he began teaching poetry classes in local prisons via a partnership between Exchange for Change and O, Miami.

When your child chooses tradition: Bar and Bat Mitzvah prep programs for the unaffiliated When Sherry and Christian Rauh first broached the topic of Bar Mitzvah with their son Julian, they were thinking out of the box. The family they’ve built together could be considered decidedly unconventional by traditional Jewish standards. Sherry is Jewish but Christian is not. Julian, their son by birth, is Jewish because his mother is, but their elevenyear- old daughter whom they adopted from Kazakhstan at age two was recently given the choice to convert – or not – to Judaism. The Rauhs encouraged Julian to approach the expression of this rite of passage with the same freedom and creativity with which they live their lives. They suggested taking a trip or doing something alternative yet meaningful. But Julian knew exactly what he wanted: a traditional Bar Mitzvah. Preparing your child for this big day is a challenge for any family but for those who are not members of a temple, as the Rauhs can attest, it can loom near impossible. They explored every obvious op-

tion but none felt right. “We never found a temple that was a good fit,” Sherry says, so they considered private Bar Mitzvah lessons. It was a viable possibility, she recalls, until she stumbled on the question, “How were we going to put all the pieces together?” In addition to preparing your child to read from the Torah, there were the logistics of the ceremony and a celebration. They concluded this option was not what they were looking for. And then just in

the nick of time, the Accelerated Prep Program at Temple Beth El of Hollywood was. The APP, an inclusive Bar and Bat Mitzvah program for unaffiliated Jews, “was an absolute perfect fit for what we needed,” effuses Sherry. “It gave Julian the opportunity to learn Hebrew in less than a year and have a traditional Bar Mitzvah.” Because the Rauhs live near Sawgrass, traveling to Temple Beth El in Hollywood would’ve proven extremely time consuming, especially after school in rush hour. But the APP allows for virtual study and Julian did most of his Bar Mitzvah training with the cantor via Skype. Says his proud mom, “I was skeptical the whole time but when he got up there and stood in front of the Torah and started reading …” At which point her words fall off and her obvious emotion kicks in. “It really exceeded our expectations in terms of the whole experience.” For the Rauhs, the takeaway of their APP experience was more than a beautiful service and a great party. It was acceptance as both an unaffiliated

and unconventional family by the Jewish community. “I never felt any judgment in terms of the way our family is Jewish,” Sherry says. Instead the welcome they received was clearly, “We’re here for you now, whatever your needs are.” Their son Julian’s takeaway also exceeded their expectations. As Sherry tells it, “After the fun party, I asked Julian what was your favorite part? He said, ‘Reading from the Torah because it’s such an accomplishment,’ knowing this is something Jews have done throughout millennia. It’s important to a person’s sense of identity.” And clearly it’s a tradition that lives on as the Jewish community continues to adapt to an ever-changing world. About Temple Beth El

Founded in Hollywood in 1957, Temple Beth El is a progressive congregation, blending Jewish values, study, social action and traditions into a house of worship, education and community. For more information call 954-920-8225 or visit http://www. templebethelhollywood.org
