MUNICIPAL NEWS

David Civitia named Hollywood Firefighter of the Year David Civita was named Holdvolz@hollywoodgazette.com lywood Firefighter of the Year and recognized for his achievement during a recent commission meeting. Civita, a driver engineer for the Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety Department spearheaded an effort to bring in a cancer screening test to the department. His research found that firefighters suffered cancer at a significantly higher rate than the general population. The bunker gear that firefighters wear when fighting a fire protects them from intense heat but it does not protect them from the carcinogens released from items that burn during fires. Many items found in homes and commercial buildings are made of artificial materials that release cancer causing toxic chemicals when they burn. Over time, because firefighters are exposed to these chemicals, they are at a greater risk of developing cancer, according to Civita. He led the effort to bring LifeScan to the department and firefighters can receive tests to determine if they have precancerous conditions or cancer. “We have found that a number of our firefighters had precancerous conditions and we were able to get them the treatment they needed,” said Civita. “The fire department is a family. We work together and we live together. I want to make sure the firefighters are taken care of properly. I want them to have the best healthcare possible.” Civita has been with Hollywood Fire Rescue for 29 years. He was also recognized for his efforts at mentoring new firefighters and helping them develop successful careers with the department. He was recognized for good work over his years with Hollywood.

The colored pencil on paperboard, and acrylic on canvas works are inspired by classical mythology and architecture. This fine and delicate work is contrasted by detailed contemporary beauty. Martinez Vanegas updates and mutates themes from ancient mythology creating a new vision. The artist expects the viewer to feel inspirational impulses while admiring the story and finding a secret meaning like “ Tornate all’antico e sarà un progresso” / Let us turn to the past: that will be progress (Giuseppe Verdi). LOCAL BUSINESS

Everyone’s Irish at Shenanigans on St. Patrick’s Day! PHOTO BY CARLOS PEREZ

BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Meet local home town Irish boy Patrick Utter, husband, father and owner of Shenanigans Sports Pub – the place to have fun! “On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, we open at 11am serving cornbeef hash and eggs with Eye Opening Bloody Mary’s!” Utter enthusiastically explains that over the course of the day, they serve over 1,000 pounds of fresh made cornbeef! Come on, people… who doesn’t love that? “The menu will consist of cornbeef and cabbage, Shepherd's pie, fish-n-chips, piled high cornbeef sandwiches and baked potato soup… all while Hollywood’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade takes place Downtown Hollywood on Sunday, March 12. It’s undeniable, people - Hollywood Beach is the bomb! Utter is also a former lifeguard, avid swimmer and fisherman - so what got him into the restaurant biz? Restaurant background “My background in the restaurant business goes back over 40 years,” explains Utter. “I worked every station in the restaurant from dishwasher to cook to bartender to manager. It was a progressive process and after graduation I attended culinary school and studied restaurant management.” Over 25 years ago, Utter worked at the infamous Martha’s, a restaurant lo-

cated on the Intracoastal just south of the Dania Beach Bridge on A1A. “It was a fine dining restaurant and I was the restaurant manager,” recalls Utter. Since then, this location has served as SunCruz Casino and is now under construction to be Seaside Village. After time at Martha’s, Utter found a neighborhood bar for sale called, Toby’s. “I had the idea of opening a gastro pub. I completely changed the format to include fresh (never frozen) jumbo wings, fresh local fish, prime rib, steaks - everything locally sourced and all food made in-house.” Clearly, the ultimate in surf and turf; but, from soups to all entrees, Utter attributes much of his success to his staff members. “Shenanigans couldn’t be possible if I didn’t have some of the most talented and wonderful staff with me for years. I have a chef and general manager that both worked alongside me for 25 years and I have a great wife and partner.”

Have some fun! “The word Shenanigans means mischief, playing around, having fun!” explains Utter. “I’m an Irish-American and my father used the word Shenanigans to describe my four brothers and myself growing up.” Utter has lived in Hollywood for 50-plus years. He attended Hollywood Central, Olsen Middle School and South Broward High School - full confirmation of being a local. “The thing I love most about Hollywood is the beach and ocean,” states Utter. “That’s the first thing that comes to my mind. I try to get to the Beach and enjoy our boardwalk as much as possible.”

10

March 2017

Love and Shenanigans “Christine and I met in Hollywood at Shenanigans and we have been together for 17 years!” shares Utter. “Our family consists of five children and a French bulldog.” “Besides juggling two local restaurants, we have a

9 year old son and a 3 year old daughter that fills our day.” Utter continues. “I enjoy fishing and all water sports and Christine is a devoted runner and workout enthusiast.” The couple both took Leadership Hollywood Class XL from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to stay connected to the community they love. They enjoy living in the Hollywood Lakes section and their lives revolve around the ocean and the beautiful beach in Hollywood. Utter states, “The most important thing I’ve learned after 25 years in business is that you must be versatile, you must adapt to changing and current food and beverage trends.” Utter has dedicated managers, cooks, servers and bartenders that work hard. He says, “Without my team, I would not be around 25 years later. They have been the backbone of my success.” “We now feature locally made draft brews and craft cocktails. It’s an exciting time, being in the pub business.” So mark your calendars for March 12 and get your Irish on! Expect live music, Shenanigans souvenir t-shirts and hats, $6 premium cocktails and green beer til 4am! Yowzah! Everyone is Irish on St Patrick’s Day in BOTH Locations!!! Enjoy Shenanigans Sports Pub at Park Sheridan Plaza, 3303 Sheridan Street, just one mile west of I-95 and Sheridan Street across from TY Park, and Shenanigans East Side Pub at 1300 South Federal Highway in Dania! Cat Shack (2108 Tyler St.). She’s got the stuff that make pussy-cats purr (healthy food, treats and supplements, toys and, of course, a boutique for cats and those who love them)… BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT Richie Cole's Triumphant Return to Atelier 3 is slated for March 31st (8pm—NO COVER). This is big news for the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood as the legendary sax player will be signing his freshly released CD “The Many Minds of Richie Cole.” The cover art for this epic album was created at AT3 this past June by local artist Daniel Pontet (Daniel painted it with his feet while Richie and the band played). Special thanks go to Holly Spillane who arranged for Richie’s return by booking him for the Sunshine Jazz Concert Series (March 26). The L/Mercado Studio Collective (2000 Harrison Street) is a must stop. An abundance of artists—a maze of marvelosity! Do yourself a favor and drop in. Which brings us to Carlos Cotera (he’s a member of the collective), and the majordomo behind the Hollywood Meetup group (over 500 strong now). If you’re an artist or aficionado you need

Brenna Baker (Hollywood Hot Glass)

to join and bscene (meetup.com/Hollywood-fl-art). They don’t call ArtsPark the ArtsPark for nothing’. Two real gems serve as artists in residence—Brenna Baker and Larry Joe Miller. Larry offers monthly FREE painting opportunities. On March 18th it’s Paint-For-Fun at 7:30pm and on March 25th it’s Hollywood A-Van-GoGo at 7:30pm (did I mention you paint for FREE!).

Meanwhile at Brenna Baker’s Hollywood Hot Glass, the daily WalkIn Workshops offer folks the chance to create their own piece of glass (prices start at an affordable $40). One of my favorite artists Lisa Zomaro (the Electrician’s Daughter) has opened her own business, The Kitschy

If you read my blog (bscene.tumblr. com) you know that Hollywood’s own Benny Torres (a fullride, baseball playing, Purple Knight at the University of Bridgeport) is ready to make us proud (the season has started and I’ll keep youse posted). Benny wants to make the big leagues and I expect Hollywood to be cheering him on from the bleachers to the beach! Speaking of the Hollywood youth movement, little Auggie Del Sesto (6-years old) has been knocking ‘em dead on 3rd Saturday’s playing piano at The Old Hollywood Beer House (2019 Harrison St.). The kids got a future and his folks (dad Justin and mom/artist Lorena Basualdo couldn’t be more proud) Exhibition and Fundraiser, March 18 - April 7, 2017: “Exposed is an annual Art and Culture Center fundraiser that connects emerging artists with collectors to support the interdisciplinary practices of South Florida artists, artist-run spaces, and galleries. The exhibition features about 100 artworks that are donated by practicing artists.” Worthy… One Liners: St. Patrick’s Day Parade (Hollywood Blvd and Harrison St. March 12th at noon)…Full Moon Drum Circle (ArtsPark at Young Circle; also March 12th at 7pm)…Vice Mayor Peter Hernandez has become a fixture at art and cultural events—bravo! Born in Chicago in 1930, Dolores moved to Hollywood in 1956. “I married Don, my first husband in Chicago and it was he who suggested we make the move to Florida.” The path that led Dolores to the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood, however, reads like vintage pulp fiction—lots of passion, sex, and celebrity—with big cities serving as the backdrop. Despite that first foray into the modeling milieu, once she graduated high-school, Dolores decided to enroll in college (North Park University). Her first summer break found her in Saginaw, Michigan, where the underage but overdeveloped lass found work at The Dock (a local bar). “I met a group of very wealthy men on-board a 56-foot yacht—you might say, one of them “adopted” me,” the beaming blue eyed octogenarian said with a laugh. “No hanky-panky—at least not at first,” she added with a wink. When summer came to a close, Dolores returned to Chicago, but not to school—having a Sugar Daddy can do that. “Once back in Chicago, I met Bill Kennedy, a PR guy, who was dying to introduce me to a self-made millionaire— the owner of a game manufacturing company. My reaction was ‘why not!’” Life soon became diamonds, Cadillac’s and shopping sprees at Saks. “And a whole lot of French 75’s” Dolores laughed, toasting me from across the table. Dolores’ Chicago was a world of millionaires, mobsters and movie stars—it was all very exciting for a young girl with adventure on her mind… BY KENT WALLACE

“Oh, the people I met, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Van Heflin, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Alan King, Pat Boone…” This college dropout was hanging with the in-crowd! And then love struck—right here in SoFlo. “I visited Florida often and that’s where I met Don and, well, that was that.” While married in Dolores’ hometown of Chicago, Don convinced her to move with him to Florida. “We were two kids with little more than dreams and ambition. I had contacts from my previous suitors and I got Don hooked up with Jack Martin’s production company. Don was a quick learn and he soon became a talent coordinator, while I signed with the Doris Crane Agency.” While Blondes may have more fun, her natural locks didn’t help when Dolores applied for work at Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale. “Cocktail servers were making bigbucks at Mai-Kai and in the summer modeling work dried up, so I moonlight-

ed. The problem was, I needed to have a Polynesian look and so I dyed my locks black.” The new look, however, put her agency in a tizzy as they were selling Dolores as a Marilyn Monroe type blonde. Presented with an ultimatum, Dolores settled on modeling; she said aloha to her hula skirt and lei and let her hair grow back au natural. It wasn’t long before the back-toblonde beauty was working nationwide. “Wherever work took me, whether Los Angeles, Las Vegas, New York or Miami, my life was one of fine dining, club hopping and VIP treatment.” While hobnobbing with the likes of Howard Hughes, Mike Todd and Peter Lawford, Dolores also graced the pages of myriad magazines, even garnering the covers of Panorama, Official Detective and True Romance. She even picked up bit parts on television shows. “I had a small role on the TV show Flipper–the episode was titled, Disaster in the Everglades Part II,” she laughs. Eventually the petite bombshell was hired as a Bunny at Hugh Hefner’s Play-

boy Club in Miami. It wasn’t long after, that her marriage to Don ended… “Life as a glamour girl was good, but when I turned 38 I decided to hang up the bikini…” Well almost… Dolores took on work at the Mouse Trap on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami and that’s where she met hubby number two, Harry. “Harry owned a business and I was comfortable but he was quite the philanderer. Fortunately, he had a brother, Bob, who adored me. Bob owned a traveling carnival and I decided to live a life on the road as a carny.” Dolores convinced her girlfriend to partner with her. Together they purchased two food trucks which became “Grab-Joints” (selling hot dogs, pizza, snow-cones et al). The two entrepreneurs worked the circuit for about 5-years before word came that Dolores’ husband had passed. Left with a decent inheritance, Dolores however burned through it fairly fast. “I found a boy-toy, what can I say!” Eking out a living for the next bunch of years, the now sixty-four year old Dolores had a brainstorm. “South Florida was rife with retirees and I had so much vim and vigor. Well, I got myself a chauffeur’s license and started my own driving service. I advertised in the old Hallandale Digest—my come on was, ‘Let me take you for a ride!’” Business boomed. So much so that Dolores was left in no less than three wills, inheriting no less than a quarter million dollars and property too boot! At the age of 79, Dolores finally packed it in and settled into the Hollywood, Intracoastal condo Harry had left her upon his death. To this day Dolores drives herself, dolls up, drinks exotic concoctions and is as fabulous and vivacious as ever!

Development plans for Sunset Golf Course have neighbors teed off The fate of CORRESPONDENT the Sunset Golf dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Course has long been debated in the City of Hollywood and now a group of Hollywood residents, Friends of Hollywood, are concerned a developer wants to turn it into an extreme sports operation. The Sunset Golf Course is a privately-owned, nine-hole golf course located in central Hollywood. It encompasses 45.3 acres northeast of Johnson Street and Interstate 95 and is one of only a few large parcels of land in Hollywood that remains undeveloped. According to the City, in March 2016 Richmond Italia, a Canadian paintball industry enthusiast and CEO of G.I. Sportz, purchased Sunset for $2 million. an extreme sports park that includes paintball, a skate area and rock climbing, as well as more passive, open areas along the perimeter of the site. While no formal plans have been submitted to the City, the proposed uses would be permitted under County and City land use and zoning regulations. In previous conversations with Italia he has expressed a passion for the extreme concept and an understanding of the development challenges with such a site. The Friends of Hollywood said in a statement, “The new owner of Sunset is a manufacturer and supplier of paint and gear for Paintball. We are hearing that his plan is to lease the property as an Extreme Sports venue and to supply the lessee with his products. We don’t want a simulated war zone in our neighborhood.”

One-on-one Personalized Service Protect your investment with a Title Search and Title Insurance What is Title Insurance?

Title insurance is a policy used by homebuyers and lenders for protection against back taxes, undisclosed liens, legal judgments, forgeries, fraud and a host of other potential legal/financial problems that can arise when purchasing or refinancing property. How much does Title Insurance cost? The one-time premium is directly related to the value of your home. Typically, it is less expensive than your annual auto insurance. It is a one-time only expense, paid when you purchase your home. Yet it continues to provide complete coverage for as long as you, or your heirs, own the property.

BESTTITLE TITLE COMPANY INSURANCE CARD RATES The premiums listed are based on the promulgated rate. The premium for a policy amount not listed below can be obtained by contacting Best Title Company.

For some age groups, foregoing homeownership is not a hard decision. It can offer more labor market flexibility and the chance to pursue other investments. For many retirees, however, homeownership may be an important facet of their retirement plan, giving them stability as well as the chance to build equity. In order to rank the cities where the retiree homeownership rate is rising the fastest, SmartAsset looked at data on all U.S. cities where the population is greater than 50,000. Specifically, we gathered data in the following two metrics: The 2006 retiree homeownership rate. This is the homeownership rate among households where the head of the household was older than 65 in 2006. Data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2006 1-Year American Community Survey. The 2015 retiree homeownership rate. This is the homeownership rate among households where the head of the household was older than 65 in 2015. Data comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2015 1-Year American Community Survey. We used those two metrics to find the percent change between the 2006 retiree homeownership rate and the 2015 retiree homeownership rate. We then ranked the cities by biggest change in percent growth to lowest change in percentage growth. With a population around 70,000, Hollywood is one of the smallest cities to crack our top 10. Originally planned as an East Coast version of Hollywood, California, this city has become a haven for retirees rather than the silver screen. Hollywood, Florida has the third-highest retiree homeownership rate in the top 10 at 84.5%. That’s an increase of 6.7% from the 2006 rate of 79.1%. Homes in Hollywood, Florida are also relatively affordable. The median home value is $181,700, according to the Census. 18

Hollywood native Josh Gad snags role in Disney's Beauty and the Beast opening Mar. 17 BY DOUG GLADSTONE SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

Josh Gad remembers the time he knew he wanted to become a comic actor. "I remember sitting in a dark theater in South Florida in the winter of 1992 and watching a Genie come to life in Aladdin and tear a hole in the very fabric of space and time for me," he wrote in a special guest commentary for USA Today published on August 12, 2014. "It was at that moment that I realized, 'That's what I want to do with my life.'" The article was a tribute to Gad's idol, Robin Williams, who died the day before. As Disney characters go, the Genie is arguably one of the most memJosh Gad (left) and Luke Evans in Disney's upcoming film, "Beauty & The Beast." orable. But it wasn't only the Genie that captivated Gad. In an April 2015 article appearing in The Daily Beast, Gad admitted to writer Kevin Fallon that he enjoys playing sidekicks and second bananas. “I didn’t leave The Little Mermaid and The Lion King and Aladdin as a young boy growing up in South Florida going, ‘Oh my god, that Ariel or that Simba or that Aladdin," he told Fallon. “I left going, ‘Oh my god that Sebastian. Oh my god that Le Fou. Oh my god, that Gaston or Lumiere or Genie.'" “The Genie sums it up best for all those characters," he continued. 'You ain’t never had a friend like me.' You want these guys in your life. You want that little sidekick who’s going to be ever optimistic and joyful." Florida, the 36-year-old Gad is a child of divorce who Biography.com claims used wit and humor to help him deal with the disollution of his parents' marriage. The actor has two older brothers. "I remember us going to the local arcade in South Florida – it was called Grand Prix Race-O-Rama – and we would just play nonstop on a Saturday or Sunday,” Gad told Crave's John Guadiosi in 2015, when he was doing publicity for the movie Pixels. To get the chance to chase these video game characters that I remember playing against as a kid was like being a child all over again.” According to the same article, Grand Prix Race-O-Rama was later featured in the documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. Located on 1st Street, in Dania Beach, the complex has since closed. A shopping mecca is supposed to be built at the site this year, according to the Sun Sentinel. A 2003 graduate of the Carnegie Mellon College of Fine Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama, Gad's college roommate and good friend, Rory O'Malley, who later appeared with him on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning musical, The Book of Mormon (both would earn Tony Award acting nominations for their respective performances) remembers living with a genuinely jovial, funny individual who wanted nothing more than to make people laugh. "That place should have been condemned after we left it," jokes O'Malley. "It was like our own personal Animal House." The off-campus housing where the pair resided for four years was the 146-year old Negley House, a landmarked dwelling located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania which was restored in 1995. Recently called the most recognizable voice in family friendly entertainment by Decider.com, Gad's own family consists of his wife, the actress Ida Darvish, whom he married in 2008, and his daughters, six-year-old Ava and three-year-old Isabelle.

EDUCATION

National university with a local feel opens center in Hollywood and financial aid is available. Resources for veterans include scholarships and credits for military education and experience, as well as GI Bill assistance.

By Caron Conway Local Business Correspondent Adults seeking a quality higher education degree can find a variety of flexible, collaborative and interdisciplinary programs to accommodate their particular needs, from online bachelor’s to doctoral degree programs, at Union Institute & University, a regionally accredited non-profit national university with an academic center in Hollywood. Distinguished as the pioneer in adult education, UI&U has been providing socially relevant degree programs since 1964. The Florida Academic Center at 4601 Sheridan St. relocated last October from the North Miami Beach area. “The South Florida area is one of the most culturally diverse and socially conscious in the nation,” said Ron Thomas, Executive Director of the Florida Academic Center. “That matches up very well with UI&U’s mission in transforming lives and communities. Our whole institution is organized around supporting students who want to lead in these efforts.” Advanced Degree Options UI&U’s bachelor’s degree programs offer flexible majors with close faculty support and collaboration with other students in person and online. Majors include Business Management, Organizational Leadership, Criminal Justice Management, Emergency Service Management, Early Childhood Studies, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Maternal Child Health: Human Lactation, Exceptional Student Education, Psychology, and Social Work. Graduate degree programs include Master of Science programs in Healthcare Leadership and Organizational Leadership; Master of Arts majors in Health & Wellness, Creativity Studies, Literature & Writing, History & Culture, and Leadership, Public Policy & Social Issues; and a Master of Arts program major with residency in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

The online Master of Arts program emphasizes the connections between academics and real-world application, and is built around students’ own questions and interests. Program faculty encourage interplay between education and experience, theory and practice, and help students reflect on the lessons they learn by looking at a question from many vantage points. UI&U’s Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies degree program includes majors in Educational Studies, Humanities & Culture, Ethical & Creative Leadership, and Public Policy & Social Change. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Studies Specialization is offered to supplement a doctoral student’s primary work. Certificate Programs UI&U also offers certificate programs in Forensic Science Management, Homeland Security (undergraduate), Alcohol

and Drug Abuse Counseling, and Health Education (graduate), as well as a variety of continuing education courses and workshops. Who is UI&U for? UI&U hosts commencement ceremonies throughout the year. More than 15,500 alumni have completed their degrees while juggling career and/or family responsibilities. Among the notable alumni are Portia Simpson Miller, former Prime Minister of Jamaica; bestselling author and poet Rita Mae Brown; Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Jungian analyst and author of Women Who Run With the Wolves; Jane O'Meara Driscoll Sanders, wife of U. S. Senator Bernie Sanders; police chiefs and sheriffs; and numerous university presidents. Committed to providing the best value for an online university, UI&U offers accelerated degree completion options and a liberal transfer policy,

Additional Center Services Other student services include writing assistance, an online library, and career development. The Hollywood center, one of five academic centers that include locations in Ohio, Vermont and California, offers academic advising, a computer lab, workshops, and community events. “Our center is your resource as you need it,” said Ashley S. Finkes, UI&U’s Director of Marketing. “Our staff and our faculty work with students on a personal basis every day. We are accessible to anyone, anywhere.” A Part of the Community As a national university with a local feel, UI&U is community-driven. “Giving back to the community is something we pride ourselves on,” Finkes said. “We’re excited to be in the Hollywood area and put our footprint on the community.” “Hollywood has already proven to be a welcoming and supportive city for UI&U,” Thomas added. “This city is poised for exciting growth and development, and we want to be part of making that happen.” Open House set for Mar. 23 The Florida Academic Center will be hosting an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Thurs., March 23. Interested students can tour the new facility and learn about the exciting happenings at Union. The event will include refreshments, free giveaways and a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m. Call 305.653.7141 to RSVP. For more information on Union Institute & University, call 305-653-7141. Your Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is so proud to report that its Permitting & Development Task Force, chaired by Shannon Stough, Benchmark Contracting and Jenna Martinetti, Calvin Giordano & Associates has accomplished a lot in the last year! At the Workshop held for the Commission on Permitting & Development Process Review, on February 15th, several of the initial suggestions proposed by the Chamber have been approved and implemented…now we need to address some of the more substantial issues, but I am thrilled to report that everyone involved has a “Can Do” attitude and understands that we are all working for the Greater Good of Hollywood! Another exciting turning point, is the launching of Sunday in the Park: A Taste for Hollywood on Sunday April 30th. This event has been on many people’s mind for a long time…Everyone remembers Footie’s Wing Ding? This will be the new signature event for Hollywood and the Chamber is the engine behind it! Kudos to the Chairs Joe Risoli, Cobra Joe Productions and Marie Suarez, as the Chamber liaison and coordinator for making this happen. It is beautiful to watch the commitment and dedication of the committee members who are all volunteers who want to make great things happen in Hollywood! - Anne Hotte, CEO/ Executive Director

Broward County Public Schools uphold trans student protections In light of the recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education, Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie strongly came out in support of the existing non-discrimination policy in place to support transgender students, and vowed to uphold it on the county level. “As a community, among the most important things we can do is to provide a high-quality education for all students in safe and secure learning environments. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) respects and supports the needs of all of our diverse students," said Runcie. "As a District, we have a moral ob-

ligation and responsibility to protect students from discrimination, bullying and harassment." Prior to the federal guidance provided in May 2016, BCPS had guidelines in place to support transgender students. Therefore, the announcement by the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education will not have an impact on the operation of BCPS. There will be no change to the District’s existing non-discrimination policy, which is as follows: The School Board of Broward County, Florida, prohibits any policy or procedure which results in discrimination on the basis of age, color,

disability, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, marital status, race, religion, sex or sexual orientation. In addition, long before the federal guidance was issued in May 2016, the District’s schools had – and continue to have – gender neutral bathrooms available for all students. "Our administrators, teachers and staff want our students to feel safe and accepted in their school communities." BCPS provides resources and guidance to its schools on a regular basis, such as: · Providing professional development on meeting the needs of our diverse students;

Judith Owen to release 11th solo album March 9th at Hard Rock BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

Mark your calendars for Thursday, March 9th to toast the release of Judith Owen's 11th solo album, Somebody’s Child, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood. Owen joins Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra in support of her ‘dazzling’ new album – due out March 3. Showtime starts at 8pm, doors open at 7pm. Somebody’s Child is the follow-up to Owen’s 2014’s criticallyacclaimed Ebb & Flow, which was named in the 2016 "Top 100 Records of the Year" by The Sunday Times Culture UK and called "near perfection" by Paste. Musically, Owen brings to mind Joni Mitchell, but her lyrics have a darker hue. “The album is a “culmination of voice and piano front and center,” states Nichole Peterson-Velasco, communications director. “Songs that are vignettes of life crafted from the perspective that we ARE all “somebody’s child” – parental as well as planetary. An album about us.” Featured on the album are legendary COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

LA session musicians Leland Sklar on bass, Waddy Wachtel on guitar and Russell Kunkel on drums – all musicians who have backed up Carole King, Linda Rondstadt, Stevie Nicks, James Taylor, Jackson Browne and/or Laura Nyro, among others. “By nature, I am a diverse musician,” says Owen. “It’s who I am because of all the music I grew up being exposed to - from opera to Sinatra, Joni to Stevie Wonder, and everything in between.” Also appearing on the album are Gabriella Swallow on cello and Pedro Segundo on percussion, who will also be touring with her along with Sklar. “Touring with them served as this incredible calling card for me,” shares Owen. “I waited a long time to be able to work with some of my musical idols. I’m a late bloomer.” With ‘Somebody’s Child’, and its many moods and shades and a contemporary twist, Owen seems well on her way into the Premier League of contemporary singer-songwriters and interpreters. Which is where she belongs. Listen to Somebodys Child on SoundCloud, check out Owen on YouTube, and be sure to catch the show March 9, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, located at 1 Seminole Way, in Hollywood.

· Providing the District’s Transgender Support Guide to BCPS, which outlines our roles and responsibilities; · Instituting and supporting awareness campaigns; and · Creating community partnerships. The bottom line for Broward County Public Schools: "We will continue to respect, value and support the varying needs of our diverse students, and we will continue to provide all students with the resources to succeed in their education and beyond,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie.

Temple Beth El offers 'accelerated prep program' A Progressive Option in Jewish Spirituality Bar & Bat Mitzvah For the Unaffiliated at Temple Beth El With Temple Beth El’s Accelerated Prep Program (APP), you don’t have to be a member of the temple to come of age as a “member of the tribe.” The APP is an inclusive, customized option for Bar and Bat Mitzvah geared toward nonmember families who want their children to experience the Jewish rite of passage. This fast track program is tailored to the individual student and has teens reading Hebrew in as little as six months. Along with private tutoring onsite by Cantor Manny Silver and guidance sessions with Rabbi Allan Tuffs, instruction is also offered via Skype and Facetime. The Accelerated Prep Program enables students to chart and complete their Bar or Bat Mitzvah training in a manner that complements their other commitments, and helps parents plan and execute a meaningful and successful family celebration. When the special day arrives, the ceremony may be conducted in the Beth El sanctuary, which combines a

contemporary aesthetic with timeless Jewish tradition. Says Cantor Silver, “I’m always moved by the joy and sense of accomplishment and pride my APP students experience with chanting from the Torah and having a real Bar or Bat Mitzvah.” In addition to reading their Torah portion and leading the service, the Rabbi and Cantor acquaint students with rituals, such as the laying (wearing) of tefillin for a complete and well rounded entry into the spirituality of Jewish adulthood.
