Downtown Hollywood gets cleaned up ‘Block by Block’ by Brett Daly | Editor brett@hollywoodgazette.com
Two months into the Block by Block initiative, business owners have noticed a difference in Downtown Hollywood’s appearance, said Chris Eberle, president of the Downtown Hollywood Business Association and co-owner of the Big Easy Bar and Grille. They commend the Community Redevelopment Agency’s (CRA) efforts to attract more visitors and business to the area. The City contracted Block by Block to clean and maintain Downtown Hollywood beginning Nov. 1, after an inundation of complaints from residents and business owners about the untidy appearance of Downtown Hollywood, said Lisa Liotta, economic development manager for the City of Hollywood CRA. Block by Block – a company based in Louisville, KY – provides safety, cleaning and hospitality services to Improvement Districts throughout the United States in order
to set the stage for prosperity and growth, according to the company’s website. It currently serves more than 45 districts in 35 cities, including the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District in Miami. “We think it’s a great program,” Eberle said. “We think Jorge [Camejo] and Lisa [Liotta] are doing a great job helping us out Downtown and turning this place around.” The program consists of four full-time employees or Downtown Ambassadors who take shifts patrolling the Downtown area to provide enhanced services, which Liotta defined as anything that goes above and beyond baseline services such as picking up garbage once a day and maintaining medians. She offered pressure cleaning, litter and graffiti removal as examples of enhanced services. The City is still responsible for providing baseline services to the Downtown area. “I think it’s running smoothly and from my perspective there is an improvement,” said Jorge Camejo, executive director of the CRA. “It gives us better control and a better understanding of what the issues are.” Liotta said she has received many
compliments from property and business owners about the success of Block by Block and said the ambassadors, who are all Hollywood residents, have really focused on picking up litter Downtown. Their scope, however, can include a number of services such as hanging up banners, removing graffiti from public places and updating the outdoor directory. But, the CRA did point out that it did not contract Block by Block to address the issue of vagrants in Downtown Hollywood. The ambassadors may ask these individuals to move somewhere else, but the Hollywood Police Department will still remain in charge of the issue. Prior to contracting Block by Block, the CRA paid the City $187,000 to provide Downtown Hollywood with enhanced services, but now the CRA pays Block by Block to perform these services, saving itself $34,000. Liotta also added that having Block by Block allows the CRA to address problems sooner and therefore resolve problems more quickly. Camejo believes the system in place works better than the previously one used.

Dear Editor, We think in today’s economy when so many families in Hollywood are struggling to make ends meet, the City of Hollywood decides to increase beach parking at the meters AGAIN. When will the City stop increasing beach parking? We read in the newspaper that the beach parking rates were increased due to the free pull in parking now effective in Downtown Hollywood. Why should the people living in Hollywood support free parking
in Downtown Hollywood? If you took a poll, many more people would rather spend time at the beach and on the Hollywood Broadwalk than Downtown at the bars, lounges and restaurants. Make beach parking affordable for the working families of Hollywood! Judith and Charles Geanuracos Dear Editor, Hollywood commissioners spent at a time of economic turn down more than $700,000 on a water tower repaint that should have been done for $400,000.
Their logic was to have an icon for travelers to remember and hopefully visit Hollywood. The highlight was to have the temperature and time for motorists to look at while traveling 70 MPH or more down I-95. Unfortunately it does not work. Last week, I happened to be coming southbound on the turnpike in Pompano and what do I spy? A common billboard in the middle of no distinct location with both the temperature and time boldly displayed and working properly. Looks like our commission has had another boondoggle and we taxpayers are footing the bill. Jim Stoodley E-mail your letters to the editor to Miriam@ hollywoodgazette.com.

The City of Hollywood faces a 2 to 5 foot sea level increase by 2100, said Dr. Nancy Gassman of the Broward County Department of Environmental Protection and Growth Management during the Dec. 7 City Commission meeting, an increase which could have a profound impact on the City. Party with a Purpose: Hard Rock Style “Last year PWP events raised more than $33,000 for 11 different nonprofits. We anticipate doubling what was raised last year at a minimum.”
by MIRIAM CRONKHITE | Managing Editor miriam@hollywoodgazette.com
Nonprofit organizations are vital to the health of a community; unfortunately nonprofits now face critical financial hardships and need help from the community. As federal and local grants become increasingly more challenging to secure, nonprofit organizations are relying upon grassroot, communitydriven efforts to raise the capital needed to meet their objectives. The Urban Institute 2010 National Survey of Nonprofit-Government Contracting and Grants found Florida nonprofits are experiencing severe declines in revenue, projected to continue in upcoming years. The Hollywood Gazette has joined forces with the Seminole Paradise and the Hard Rock in 2012 to network, fundraise and increase awareness within the community. Hollywood Gazette has organized monthly fundraising events, dubbed “Party with a Purpose,” since 2008. Dave & Busters has generously hosted the Party with a Purpose (PWP) events for the last three years, along with publisher Jennifer Sandomir and event coordinator Marika Guyton. Their combined efforts have helped make each year more successful. Last year PWP events raised more than $33,000 for 11 different nonprofits. “This year, due to the change of venue and the expansion of the team at the Hard Rock coordinating and promoting the events, our concepts have vastly expanded to involve the community on a much greater scale,” Sandomir said. At the 2012 PWP, attendees donate $10 at the door and can expect appetizers, drinks specials, raffles and networking. This year additional efforts such as a fundraising flash mob, comedy festival and karaoke-a-thon and being coordinated to coincide with the events. Murphy’s Law, Renegade, Bluepoint Ocean Grill, Tequila Ranch and Rock N Hookah have committed to hosting PWP events, usually at 5:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month. “We anticipate doubling what was raised last year at a minimum,” Sandomir said. “Hollywood Gazette’s Party with a Purpose is an extraordinary charitable initiative that brings awareness to 12 local philanthropic organizations, and it gives us great joy to be the official venue for 2012,” said Susan Renneisen, director of special events at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, “With 12 full-service restaurants and 12 bars and lounges, it was an obvious decision to serve as the location for the monthly

mixers, where these commendable organizations will have the opportunity to bring awareness to their mission while enjoying South Florida’s ultimate entertainment destination.” National, state and local reduction of general-fund revenues means cuts in community development programs, education and environmental programs, mentoring programs, legal assistance, public broadcasting and health. Private funding and individual contributions are essential to the future of many community nonprofits. The 2011 Fundraising Effectiveness Project, conducted by The Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, found that for every $5.35 that respondent organizations raised in gift dollars in 2010, $5.54 was lost through attrition, a negative 1.9 percent growth-in-giving ratio. The first 2012 PWP event will be held at Bongos Cuban Café on Jan. 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to benefit the Hollywood Jaycees. Since 1994, the Jaycees have supplied clothes, food and training to local families. Goals for 2012 include increasing volunteer/membership in order to expand their reach in the community. According to the president of the Hollywood Jaycees, Sara Lavenka, the majority of the funding comes from donations and fundraising events. The Community Enhancement Collaboration serves the community with such programs as Adopt-A House that
helps restore a house to code compliance and a program that donates blankets to sick children at Washington Park Community Center and the homeless. “The fundraising events are very vital for the day-to-day operations of CEC. We have no administration, and with funds being cut from the City of Hollywood as well as government funds, we rely on the support of the community,” said executive director Nadine McCrea. The Ann Storck Center currently serves 300 children and adults with developmental disabilities through its specialized Residential Services, Preschool Early Intervention Program, Developmental Training Program for adults, and a nationally acclaimed Expressive Arts Program that combines fine art and music therapy. “Funding for programs provided to people with disabilities has been cut drastically over the years,” said Director of Community Relations Elisabeth Glynn. The Anne Storck Center relies on community support. “Contributions from members of the community, foundations and corporations are greatly appreciated,” Glynn said. CasaBlanca Academy provides children with autism and other developmental challenges an educational setting with unique methods. “Private contributions are integral to our continued success,” said Lizzie Bicknell, vice president of Administration and Development. “We are a small, nonprofit school, and we strive to keep our tuition at an attainable level.” This year, CasaBlanca Academy hopes to raise money to increase training and technology among staff and families. The Hollywood Women’s Club is the world’s oldest and largest women’s service organizations, dedicated to serving the community through events like their 2nd Annual Bicycle Project. The HWC Day Group raised money for five bicycles that they awarded to deserving, economically less fortunate youths, based on merit and educator

LOCAL BUSINESS PROFILE
Remodeling: The advantages of hiring a trained professional By Marcy Gordon Expanding, remodeling and updating property requires training and expertise to do it properly. Reality television often portrays massive design and construction projects as simple, requiring only a couple of days and a few words of guidance from an expert. However, successful, efficient and gratifying remodeling results from experienced collaboration and planning.
Save Time, Save Money, Have Your Own Advocate Hiring a trained design professional can save a lot of time and money. The designer becomes an advocate to assist homeowners throughout the entire process. Designers are aware of new materials and are trained to find the perfect products for a project, within the balance of a wants versus needs analysis and within a budget. They then integrate the result of this analysis with the technical components required for the project. Color, finishes and furnishings are usually considered during the concept of a remodel, but things that are often not taken into account
are plumbing, HVAC, electric, energy and structure. Aesthetics is only one component. At the conclusion of a project, everything should function comfortably and safely according to specific needs. Having a design professional trained in all of these matters is crutial to avoiding pitfalls. Professionals know the right questions to ask about safety and code specifications. They are trained to analyze and design with appropriate measures for electrical, plumbing, A/C and structural support.
Have a Plan Design professionals are trained in space planning and will ultimately prepare a set of plans for the project. Investing in a set of design plans is probably the most important decision one can make before hiring someone to remodel any part of their space. It is a road map to get started in the right direction. Without proper plans, one cannot solidify the outcome of the project. A set of schematic design plans also allows for an itemized list of selections in each area and can be independent of the construction itself, which is often perfect for those who just want to explore options.

City attempts to finalize terms of lease for Cinema Paradiso in Downtown Hollywood by Brett Daly | Editor brett@hollywoodgazette.com
Cinema Paradiso may be coming to Downtown Hollywood if the City can determine the terms of its lease, said Community Redevelopment Agency Executive Director Jorge Camejo. Although unwilling to discuss the reasons the lease has not been finalized, Camejo said they are doing everything possible to solidify the terms. “Until the ink is on the lease, we don’t want to jinx anything,” he said. The City may not want to speak on the issue, but Cinema Paradiso has already updated its website to include
its Hollywood location, stating “keep your eyes open for Cinema Paradiso-Hollywood!” The Ft. Lauderdale International Film Festival or FLIFF, which operates Cinema Paradiso, currently has a theatre in Ft. Lauderdale and it functions as a year-round art house, according to its website. The 230 seat stadium cinema is open 365 days a year with the ability to project in 35mm, 16mm, HDCam, Digi-Beta, BetaSP and DVD. It also contains a cafe with three full bars serving wine, beer, mixed drinks, soft drinks, coffee, concession candy and popcorn. The theatre is available for rent. OPINION
Gambling Already Everywhere In Florida, So Welcome New Casinos BY BUDDY NEVINS www.browardbeat.com
Critics charge that the new casino bill will bring too much gambling to Florida. Bunk. We’ve already got it, folks. There is gambling from Pensacola to Miami. I was astounded by the number of gambling facilities I found that were already authorized by the state: 24 Cardrooms 5 Slot Machine Facilities 16 Greyhound Tracks 6 Jai-Ali Frontons 3 Thoroughbred Tracks 1 Harness Track 2 Quarter Horse Tracks There are other facilities, including the Seminole Hard Rock, which is not governed by the state. Don’t forget the Florida Lottery, which is expected to provide $1.186 billion for education in the 2011-12 fiscal year.

Gambling currently employs thousands. The handful of slot parlors in South Florida are expected to pump $154 million into state coffers in 201112 — not the $500 million annual take promised when the referendum was passed, but not peanuts, either. Parimutuels provide nearly $30 million more. Take a look at the map below. Do you really believe a handful of destination casinos being debated in Tallahassee now are going to ruin Florida? No, new casinos will be a job generator that will employ thousands. These new casinos will pump tens of millions into the state general fund. If investors are willing to spend more than $2 billion — the current requirement to gain a license in the proposed bill — let them. All that money will be spent right here. (Disclosure: My son Aaron Nevins is senior legislative aide to state Sen. Ellyn Bogdanoff, who is a sponsor of the destination casino bill.)

Residents of Hollywood will have a chance to support leaders and implement change in November, during the 2012 General Municipal Election. Voters will decide on their mayor and city commissioners in six districts. Mayor Bober will run for re-election, unopposed for a second term. The city commissioner candidates include current Vice Mayor Patricia Asseff in district one and current district three commissioner Heidi Marie O’Sheehan. Central Broward Water Control Commissioner Kevin Biederman will run for city commissioner in district five. Timothy Burton and Ralph Kenol will be running in district two. Richard S. Blattner will try to hold his position against Justin Leif Serian for district four. In district six, Edward F. Holodak and Freddy Manuel Suategui will run against current commissioner Linda Sherwood. The City Clerk provides updated election information at http:// Hollywoodfl.org/election/election.htm. New changes to city commission
View and participate in Hollywood Gazette’s online election poll on our Facebook Page or visit www.hollywoodgazette.com terms and limits mean the mayor and commissioners from even-numbered districts will serve four-year terms beginning in 2012, while oddnumbered districts will serve a six-year term beginning at the presidential election in 2012 and then four-year terms on the gubernatorial election cycle beginning in 2018. Term limits will not allow anyone to run for mayor if they have served 12 consecutive years as mayor by the end of their current term. Commissioners serving 12 consecutive years in a district will also not be able to run for re-election in that district. The critical role of city manager may soon be filled as well. After a national search, choices have been narrowed to six candidates. At the Hollywood Art and Culture Center on
Jan. 5 there will be a public meet and greet with candidates and a public Special City Commission meeting will take place Jan. 6 for interviews. The new city manager will be will be chosen by the city commission. Citizens can register to vote at the public library, the DMV, government offices, post offices or social services. New Florida voters must be registered at least 29 days before an election to vote in that election. The voter registration application can be found online and mailed or delivered to the Supervisor of Elections office. A voter identification card is generally received about three weeks after it is processed.

Free parking Downtown: Time Limits for day parking by Brett Daly | Editor brett@hollywoodgazette.com
After listening to the suggestions of Downtown business owners, the City of Hollywood approved no time limits to Downtown parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. A three-hour time limit between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. remains in effect. Back in November, the City Commission approved the removal of 82 master meters and 373 single-head meters from Downtown Hollywood after a 4-2 vote. The switch to free parking began Dec. 1 and received high praise from Downtown business owners. “We have a true consensus here of the community, organizations, developers, retailers, restaurants, real estate firms, etc.,” said Chris Eberle, owner of the Big Easy Bar and Grille and the president of the Downtown Hollywood Business Association during the Nov. 16 City Commission meeting. “I’m aware of no one opposed. We believe that in itself is instructive.” The switch, however, will come at 26

a loss of about $1.4 million of revenue for Hollywood – a revenue source the City has not yet found a way to replace. While talks include raising parking fees on Hollywood Beach, Director of Parking and Intergovernmental Affairs Lorie Mertens-Black, said they are still discussing ways to develop new sources of parking revenue. In addition to revenue loss, the switch eliminated three full-time positions and four parttime positions, but the CRA strongly believes the switch will help attract much-needed traffic to Downtown businesses. “Parking is perceived as a major impediment to Downtown,” said CRA executive director Jorge Camejo. “Creating the opportunity where we would be able to market free parking Downtown and affirmatively state to the public that by visiting Downtown Hollywood you would no longer run the risk of being ticketed, I think that is a huge, huge value and a tremendous opportunity that we can take advantage of.”

Hollywood artists seek arts district for Downtown by CARON CONWAY Lead Correspondent
A group of Hollywood businesspeople and dozens of artists have a farsighted vision for the Downtown District, and thanks to their united efforts, visitors to the area can also see the big picture. The smART movement is a volunteer campaign launched in midDecember that’s transforming drab building facades into eye-catching works of art. But smART organizers say the real “big picture” is so much more than what meets the eye – that not only can a colorful mural bring a large blank wall to life, but visually stimulating outdoor art can bring an entire neighborhood to life. Longtime Hollywood resident, event organizer and realtor David Erickson, one of the movement’s founders, said smART’s ultimate purpose is to create economic vitality through the restoration of Downtown Hollywood to a true arts district. Erickson said the redevelopment effort starts with the street art creation, which inspires the local community and generates traffic to the area – which in turn leads to art sales and increased sales of goods and services at existing local businesses, as well as interest from new businesses in vacant Downtown properties. “Money will follow the art,” said Erickson, who is spearheading the smART movement with Alex Terife, owner of the Downtown Pizza Rustica on Hollywood Boulevard, and Terife’s business partner Nick Pereira. “The artist activity will bring successes. Downtown becomes an interesting village again, and we all support the cause of creating new art all year long.” Every Tuesday evening, artists from throughout South Florida gather Downtown to volunteer their time and talents and share their inspiration with curious onlookers. SmART, a Florida nonprofit organization, provides equipment such as scaffolds and ladders and some of the supplies. Mobile Stage Network, a company whose locations include Downtown Hollywood, donates the use of stateof-the-art, remote-controlled stage lights that illuminate the artists’ wall canvases. “This is supporting the community. Whatever the duration [of the smART movement], we’re here,”

said company co-owner Mike “Fish” Michaels. Finally, Downtown landlords like Ben Cohen, who owns four properties in the district, offer up their exterior building space to the creative process. Adorning Cohen’s Ramada hotel on Harrison Street are 30 colorful works of art contained within rectangular and oval-shaped frames. The timing of the smART movement could not have been better, with the Downtown Hollywood Business Association in the process of “trying to brand the Downtown area,” said Cohen. “This part of town needs a character. It’s up to the community
to develop an identity. We want to get a community spirit here to welcome people here.” Terife said it’s exciting to see the community “coming together to transform its Downtown into a cultural and art-infused destination to be shared by locals and visitors.” Some 50 artists have participated in the movement so far, between the street art and displays inside local businesses and a new gallery housed in Cohen’s Harrison Court building. Multiversal/smART Studios curator Cassie “Kazilla” Williams, a diverse artist and arts mover-and-shaker known for her multiversal exhibitions,
introduced most of the participating artists to the smART movement. “I love Hollywood. I love the diversity and the culture. There’s a lot here. There’s just not a lot of traffic,” Williams said. “They’re really stimulating a lot of interest. It’s really a great platform for all my artists.” These artists include Trek6, who has been involved in Miami’s prestigious Art Basel art show and famed Wynwood Art District. “The more of these type of events that the City sees, the more they can see the potential, including the potential to generate revenue,” he said. “Art is coming to Hollywood – at last,” said artist Mary Duncan, whose work adorns the exterior of the Ramada Inn and the interior of Harrison’s Wine Bar, which she and her husband Richard have owned for 10 years. “This is a good start.” The launch of the smART movement happens to coincide with the City’s decision to provide free Downtown parking beginning Dec. 1, which Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Executive Director Jorge Camejo called “a catalyst for future economic growth.” There is no charge for on-street parking between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., with free parking permitted in three-hour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. SmART organizers said the movement will be expanded to include other arts and culture elements such as live music and special events Downtown. Erickson, who has organized numerous annual events in Hollywood, is working on resurrecting the Fat Tuesday celebration that was part of the former Mardi Gras Fiesta Tropicale festival. “Watching Downtown Hollywood transform itself in the next few months will be a memorable experience,” he said. Cohen hopes the grassroots movement will make Downtown Hollywood an example for other communities. “The potential is definitely here. We’re sitting in a great location,” he said. “It can be done.”
