COVER STORY
Hollywood’s “God Squad” Creates Daily Miracles for Kids in Haiti BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
S
o a Rabbi and a Pastor walked into a cafe for a casual lunch and... sorry, no joke here. What was born was a unique partnership. The dynamic duo, dubbed the "God Squad" of Hollywood began working on a project to made a difference for, indeed saved the lives of, dozens of AIDS-affected orphans in Haiti. And 12 years later, they continue to bring joy, healing and awareness to many residents of Hollywood as well. Hollywood CARES (Caribbean AIDS Relief, Education, and Support) For Haiti is the brainchild of Rabbi Allan C. Tuffs of Temple Beth El of Hollywood and Kennedy McGowan, a Presbyterian minister and the Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood. When I ask about the beginnings of the organization, Rabbi Tuffs says, “let me tell you instead about our friendship.” Rabbi Tuffs, long established in Hollywood, customarily would reach out to new clergy as they came to the community. He called the church to set up a lunch date with the newlyarrived Pastor McGowan. Around that time, there was a growing awareness of the world AIDS crisis, and concern about the epidemic was just one of the things that united the Rabbi and the Pastor. “We hit it off,” said the Rabbi. “We decided we liked hanging out together right away,” the Pastor agreed. That was more than a dozen years ago. Today, the two local religious leaders finish each other’s sentences and showed up for a photo shoot in unplanned identical outfits. “Our church leaders had gone to a conference that had discussed the international AIDS crisis,” Pastor McGowan explained, “and we were struggling about what we could do. Rabbi and I had already developed a friendship when we got a call from one of my staff members, who told us that a neighbor of hers was photographing 6

a series on the AIDS crisis in Haiti -and that neighbor happened to be a member of Temple Beth El!
“So we said ‘God has put us together. We must explore this’.” In their first meeting, they said “Haiti is so close, let’s just go there” and so they went. “And while we were there,” said Sharon Tanenhaus, who was Chairperson of the Social Action Committee at
the temple at that time and now serves as the third president of Hollywood Cares about Haiti, after Tuffs and McGowan. “We just started saying ‘next time we’re here.’ And we’ve been back many many times since.” But back to that first trip. With photographer Mike as their guide, and accompanied by Aaron Jackson, a local young man and activist who was one the people featured in the newspaper series, they visited several orphanages for HIV and HIV-orphaned kids and agreed that one stood out. The Project Papillon Orphanage in Port au Prince appeared to be run much better than many of the oth-
ers they had seen on their tour, and was managed by a partner of Aaron’s named John Dieubon. “Which is kind of a cool name anyway,” interjected McGowan, “It means Good God in French.” The Project Papillon children are very well cared for, going to school, and enjoying a stable and loving environment. “John was just somebody we had a huge amount of respect for, for his integrity and his commitment to the kids, and as our project developed, it became exclusively with John,” continued Tuffs. “So on that trip we sat down with John, and we asked him, ‘What are your needs? We make no promises, we have no resources, but tell us.” What he had, he said, were 8 kids who had HIV mixed in with the general population of his 30 orphans, and they really needed their own house. “Because it’s so cheap to rent a house and get help there, by the time we left on that first trip we had committed to two years of setting up a house, staff, food, care and education, it was a total $24,000 commitment, and we said when we get home, we’ll hustle to get the money.” “What was amazing,” continued McGowan, “was, when we got back, well, at our church, we started talking it up, we were gearing it up toward an Easter offering, well, one member came the next day and offered to match what we raised up to $12,000! And we raised the $12,000, plus between the church and the temple about 50% more, so we had over $30,000 including the match, and we were up and running.” Then the Rabbi and the Pastor were off and running too. “We got money from the Union for Reform Judaism, about $40,000 in total over the years. And the Presbyterian Church gave money after the hurricane. We got a $5,000 anonymous donation from someone through a Methodist church in Fort Lauderdale. We wrote a thank you note, through the church, ‘to whom it may concern.’ And received another check

in return. Every time we sent a thank you note, we got another check.” “I think that man, or woman, sent us about $20,000 in the last two years!” “Maybe $30,000.” “And the earthquake in 2010 brought in more people, when everyone wanted to help Haiti, we probably got another $100,000!” In the decade since the kick-off of Hollywood CARES for Haiti, the organization’s achievements have been impressive and impactful. A contingent of leaders and congregants have continued to visit Haiti several times a year. They’re often accompanied by doctors, dentists and members of both congregations who each pay their own way and give up the majority of their luggage allowance to carry much needed clothing, computers and supplies for the kids and the programs. Everyone who participates in Hollywood CARES is a volunteer and all money donated goes directly to the programs. Lots of teens from both congregations have made the trip, some more than once. “We've had quite a few kids go with us over the years,” said Tanenhaus. “Two sisters who are members of the temple, Helen and Anna Budowsky, have traveled with us multiple times and focused their mitzvah projects on Project Papillon when they were preparing for their Bat Mitzvahs. Helen's project was a vertical garden for the kids to grow their own vegetables where the ground wasn't good for planting, and Anna gave each of the kids their own digital cameras because they were so fascinated by our cameras and the photos we took when we were there, thus enabling each of them to express themselves individually. Another teen, church member Zak Myers, who has also been to Haiti with us multiple times and is still active with us, made it his Eagle Scout project to bring solar energy to the community center. Other teens have come from as far as Texas and Massachusetts to join us. “Over the years we’ve come to know the kids and they know us, and we’ve really become a great extended family.” Hollywood CARES gets some of its financial support through grants and donations - contributing to rent, school tuition, dental care, new shoes and sneakers each winter, clothing, musi8

cal instruments, computers, a diesel generator, a 15 passenger van, and most recently, solar panels for Project Papillon’s Community Center which opened in 2010, and a fully-funded college education for every one of the kids, thanks to one very generous Hollywood CARES donor. The organization has been the recipient of the 2009 Irving J. Fain Award. Given by Religious Action Center (social justice arm of Union for Reform Judaism) the Award honors URJ congregations for exemplary social justice work. It has also received Grants from the Sam Roosth Foundation in 2014 & 2015, given to non-profit organizations for philanthropic purposes, and from URJ & Presbyterian USA, which paid for the generator and the van. “But most of our funding over the years has come via donations from individuals,” reiterated Tanenhaus. “A few have been quite substantial but for the most part, we depend on smaller donations from people who like what
we do. “Until last year, the only fundraising events we held were the yearly concerts we call Hollywood Healing Haiti at the ArtsPark, which began after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Last year, we added a 5K race in April, which was so successful for a first run that we decided to make it an annual event; our second 5K will take place on the Hollywood Broadwalk on April 29,
2018. This year’s family-friendly Hollywood Healing Haiti concert and arts fair will take place on Sunday, January 28, 2018 from 1 -5 pm at the Young Circle ArtsPark in Downtown Hollywood. Tanenhaus reported good fundraising results at the free event through donations and sponsorships along with sales of raffles, t-shirts and some artwork. Rabbi Tuffs has been at Temple Beth El for twenty years and lives with his wife in the neighborhood. Pastor McGowan has been at First Presbyterian for about 13 years (?) and lives with his wife and young son in Plantation. They have each served as both president and vice president of Hollywood CARES, retain positions on our Board of Directors and have President Emeritus status. “But what has been so special about Hollywood CARES for Haiti and these past 11 years is that it isn't just about the two men who had the first conversation, but what they envisioned and how they motivated us to go along with them,” explained Tanenhaus. “Beyond that first conversation, it has not
been a two-man enterprise. Over the years, we've grown into a larger group, all of whom work very hard for the success we've had and, hopefully, will continue to have for a long time to come. We never forget, though, how they brought us to be.” “We are dedicated to serving the orphans, endangered children, and youth of Haiti by supporting Project Papillon in an effort to help each child reach their potential and hopefully one day build a stronger Haiti.” So says the mission statement of Hollywood CARES. Rabbi Tuffs and Pastor McGowan believe they’re on track. “Some of these kids were little when we first met them, now they’re teenagers and they’re getting ready to go out in the world themselves,” noted the Rabbi. “And that’s the whole idea. That’s the way Haiti will get rebuilt. “ “We have seen how this work has changed lives, both the lives of the children we serve (many of whom might have died without this mission), and the lives of the many folks who have visited Haiti to see the mission, and work with our partners there,” added the Pastor. “Everyone who has gone to Haiti on one of our many trips there has returned profoundly changed, and many have returned year after year to see the work move forward.” The next "Hollywood Healing Haiti "concert will take place on January 28th at the ArtsPark at Young Circle. The next 5K will take place on the Hollywood Broadwalk on April 29, 2018. For information on these and all about Hollywood CARES for Haiti, please call 954-920-8225, email Contact@hollywoodcares.net or visit http://hollywoodcares.net
25 Hollywood Students Surprised with Opportunity to ‘Shop with a Cop’ BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD Walmart, which provided MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
25 Hollywood kids and their families dined on Chinese food and pizza with members of the Hollywood Police Department on Tuesday night before setting out armed with $100 gift cards for the annual Shop with a Cop night at the new Walmart on State Road 7 in Hollywood. Each participant, selected by their School Resource Officer based on improvements they have made at school and the community, spent the evening shopping with their own police escort and got to spend their allowance on gifts for themselves and their families. The students, ages 5 to 18, were each surprised in school last week with the news that they were selected. They were driven to the Walmart in police vehicles. Before shopping, the children and their families had the chance to meet with some of the leaders of the Police Department including Acting Police Chief Chris O’Brien. This is the second consecutive year that the Police Department has partnered with
funding for the program through its Walmart Community Grant program. “This event brings the police and young people together,” said Acting Chief O’Brien. “The kids see the police officers as human beings. It is important to invest in the youth and create bonds in the community.” “This gives us a chance to give back to the community, and it gives kids who are doing well a little reward,” added Major Nicole Coffin. Alan Centazzo, general manager for the Walmart in Hollywood, was pleased to have the event take place at his store. “We want to help out in the community, and we are glad to partner with the Hollywood Police Department to make this happen,” he said. While most of the kids started by shopping for themselves, they also bought gifts for their siblings and parents with their leftover money. Additional volunteers from the police department were on hand to help wrap the gifts. Parents, kids and cops were all in agreement that a great time was had by all.

Volunteers Needed in Hollywood for Countywide Homeless Count in January If you want to make a difference in your community right away in the new year, 400 volunteers are needed from Tuesday, January 23rd through Wednesday, January 24th and Saturday, January 28 to count people experiencing homelessness during a 24-hour period. Collecting data on homelessness and tracking progress can inform public opinion, increase public awareness, and attract resources that will lead to the eradication of the problem.
Shifts are available for the below slots:
Volunteers should be prepared to:
• Walk one or two miles unassisted. • Be able to stand for long periods of time. • Search for unsheltered homeless within designated location. • Review data collection form prior to the count and become familiar with the questions. • Return all survey forms (completed and otherwise) to designated team leader
Every volunteer is required to go through training/orientation unless they have participated in the Count within the
past 2 years. Volunteers can register here for shifts.

2017 Year in Review
Top 10 Hollywood Happenings BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
Can’t believe 2017 is over already? Ready to let that old year go? Well, we can’t say goodbye without a fond look back at some of the most significant events, good and not so great, that affected our humble hamlet last year. Which ones meant the most to you? What will you miss? What will you happily kiss off? What do you look forward to continuing into 2018? As always, we look forward to hearing from you, our honored readers. Let us know what we can give you more of in the coming months. And to all, good times, good health, and good news in the new year. 1) SIGN OF THE TIMES Statues tumbled around the country and our city had its own little civil war as battles raged Hollywood-style at commission meetings over the course of several months. We’re talking constituents camping out at city hall, planning for a long evening, SWAT teams perched on the roofs over Hollywood Circle, arrests being made and more as the arguments went late into the night. In the end, the protestors won -- streets named after Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee, John Bell Hood and Nathan Bedford Forrest are being changed to streets called Liberty, Hope and Freedom. Signs to change soon. 2) IRMAGEDDON After years of false alarms, we finally had another hurricane. Irma was, in contrast to her grandmotherly name, the biggest and strongest storm to come our way in a long time and watching the forecasts, there was no way we were going to avoid a hit from this one. Handymen across the state abandoned their regular work to board up windows and batten down hatches. After all, the storm was bigger than the whole state of Florida. Fortunately, though, she decided to take a turn and bad as it was, for Hollywood, it could have been a whole lot worse. Hollywood lost some sand, a few roofs and a lot of trees and most tragi-

cally 12 lives due to heat exposure at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills following the hurricane. GOOD MEN MUST DIE, BUT DEATH CANNOT KILL THEIR NAMES. - Danish Proverb Following examinations, the Medical Examiner’s office ruled the manner of death of 12 of the 14 deceased as homicides with the cause of death attributed to environmental heat exposure at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. The Hollywood Police Department focused its ongoing investigation into the homicide deaths of the following twelve people: Carolyn Eatherly, DOB 8-13-39 Gail Nova, DOB 2-22-46 Estella Hendricks, DOB 1-4-46 Bobby Owens, DOB 5-16-33 Miguel Franco, DOB 9-5-25 Manuel Mendieta, DOB 8-26-21 Albertina Vega, DOB 10-10-17 Betty Hibbard, DOB 1-11-33 Carlos Canal, DOB 11-4-23 Martha Murray, DOB 1-10-23 Dolores Biamonte, DOB 2-25-60 Cecilia Franco, DOB 4-2-27 3) I THINK I MISSED MY EXIT
4) YOU THROW LIKE A GIRL Hollywood Hills junior quarterback Holly Neher made "herstory" when she became the first female quarterback to start a varsity football game in Broward County. “It was amazing” said Neher, who is
Holly Neher is the first girl to start in a varsity football game in Broward County only the second girl in the 51-year history of her 2,000-student high school to play on the varsity football team. She is a highly regarded quarterback for the Hollywood Hills High School football team and played a significant role on the team this season. 5) TO-GO DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN GONE Reader response was strong to a summer Hollywood Commission announcement that single-use Styrofoam (polystyrene plastic) products would soon be prohibited at Hollywood's beaches and parks. The new ordinance would apply to restaurants, although one prohibiting disposable food service products has been on Hollywood's books since 1996 -- albeit unenforced. Businesses caught breaking that ordinance could be subject to a $500 fine. And according to the new consumer-focused prohibition, violators would also be faced with fines of up to $500 or up to 60 days in jail. Sadly, the new rule has been withdrawn from discussion for the time being, after extensive debates among Hollywood commissioners and residents. At issue are the questions of clarity and enforce-
ment. While it’s not a done deal, it may be awhile before all the key points are addressed and figured out to the satisfaction of all involved. Meanwhile, if people just don’t litter, the whole thing becomes a non-issue. 6) MAY THE COURSE BE WITH YOU Last year, a really adorable hotel at Hollywood Beach was knocked down and turned into a parking lot. Parking was deemed the highest and best use of the land at the beach. This year, it looks like there are several higher and better uses edging out luxury game playing as one by one, Hollywood’s golf courses are being squeezed down to 9 holes or out entirely to make way for more expensive housing (at Hillcrest), affordable housing (at Sunset, proposed and scrapped) and housing in general (the discussion about the Club at Emerald Hills died down in 2016). We’re still waiting to see what happens at the Diplomat Golf Club and while the Adventure Park at Sunset was deemed not within the zoning code, it looks like it may become either a campground or a cemetery (both okay, according to zoning) neither of which will really benefit the residents of Hollywood (at least not while
they’re alive). This issue is clearly not going to go away quietly. Fore. 7) WHAT IS THIS, PARK AVENUE? Five years of free downtown parking came to an end last month as those new-fangled multi-space meters sprung up all over downtown Hollywood and in the parking garages on North 19th and South 20th Avenues. Yes, we know it’s going to bring additional revenue to the city and the official line is that it’s supposed to increase turnover and create more parking availability for consumers. Responses so far from both business owners and shoppers/ diners are mixed. This writer’s personal opinion? Get rid of the spots reserved for the valets -- I can park my own darn car. But that’s just MHO. Busy season will see how it plays out. Please be kind and help out visitors and seniors struggling with the new machines. You’ll be there yourself one day. 8) I’D LIKE MY ONE PHONE CALL PLEASE It was not a great year for the now former City Attorney Jeffrey Sheffel. After a good start with a pay raise that took his salary over the $200k mark, concerns started appearing regarding cost overruns involving his office and complaints about
how he treated some of his staff. Members of the board of commissioners were split over whether or not he should stay on, balancing these issues with his significant knowledge of the law and of Hollywood. Ultimately, though, it was a DUI on the Hollywood Boulevard bridge that led to an accepted separation agreement between Sheffel and the city. The agreement was not considered a firing nor a resignation. His accident, captured on video, and subsequent arrest took place hours after the city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Sheffel’s car became wedged between a concrete wall and guard rail and later had to be removed by crane. Mayor Josh Levy complimented Sheffel on his skill and professionalism and
9) DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT Crane spotting is the new people watching around Downtown Hollywood as we witness new development line Young Circle. From the 111-room CIRC Hotel to the Hollywood Circle project which includes a new 47,604 square foot Publix, substantial developments are paving the way for a walkable, transit-oriented Downtown neighborhood center. festoon lighting on Hollywood Boulevard. 10) AND TO ALL A GOOD AND SAFER CITY Like everywhere, the City of Hollywood Police Department have their hands full getting rid of the bad guys and protecting the good citizens of our fair city. But these guys really go the extra mile. Acting Chief of Police Chris O’Brien is particularly pleased with the work his team did on the horrible case of animal abuse that drew our community together earlier this year. “Although we have had many success stories throughout the year, such as our PAL summer camp, Shop with a Cop, Thanksgiving meal deliveries and our upcoming event where will bring toys to over 60 less fortunate families,” he told the Gazette, “at the top of the list certainly has to be the arrest of the individual who killed Ollie. I am so proud of my Detectives and Officers who worked so hard to ensure they got justice for Ollie.” At the top of our list, though, it the fact that crime in Hollywood is down overall. Chief O’Brien reports that although he won’t have the finalized numbers until the end of January, the department is on track to show an overall reduction citywide. To most residents of Hollywood, that’s the best new year’s news of all.

LOCAL BUSINESS
After 25 Years, Shenanigans Continues to Create Hollywood "Cheers" BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
If you feel like there’s been a Shenanigans Pub in Hollywood forever, you’re kind of right – they just celebrated their 25th anniversary in the Westside Sports Pub, and soon they’ll be celebrating the 10th in the Federal Highway location. Owners Patrick Utter and his wife Christine, who met 18 years ago when she came in for a job there, have both been in the restaurant business, and in Hollywood, for pretty much their whole lives. Patrick, who has a culinary degree, has worked at such diverse places as Hollywood Boulevard bars and the renowned Martha’s. The location of the Sports Pub, across the street from TY Park off Sheridan, had been a few other things before Patrick took it over, but 25 years as what is one of the premier “local” spots in town has cemented it as one of those places that has earned a kind of “Cheers” reputation. “In fact,” said Patrick, “in the last season of Cheers, we won a Miami Herald contest for most Cheers-like establishment -- that really put us on the map!” But never content to sit back and rest
on their laurels, Patrick and Christine live, sleep and breathe the restaurant business. They continue to attend food shows and take cooking classes together and are constantly revamping their menu to keep current with trends and ahead of the competition. “It’s not an occupation,” added Christine. “It’s a way of life. It’s a constantly evolving business.” Currently, the couple is introducing a group of new, healthier menu items that is being very well received. Among the most popular so far are the Portabello Mushroom Stack salad, Ultimate Veggie Burger,
Veggie Burger and Portobello Wraps and Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos. “But the healthy options are not taking over the original bar food,” Patrick is quick to add. “The Southern Style Chicken & Waffles are doing amazing too!” In addition, he pointed out, there are new BBQ combos (the BBQ, along with the smokin’ hot pizza oven, are at the East side location on Federal Highway only) and a separate room available, at that location as well, for private parties. And the $6 Happy Hour for premium well drinks -- all day every day -- doesn’t hurt business either!
But Patrick and Christine credit the bulk of their success to two major things: the quality of their food and the caliber of their staff. “All of our food is fresh, never never frozen,” he said proudly and repeatedly. “All our food is made in house, by hand, with fresh, local ingredients whenever possible.” They give special recognition to several long-time employees, including managers Jeremy Patridge and Dan Wiggins, Chef Craig Whyte and bartender Karolina Wohl, among others. “We really couldn’t do it all ourselves,” said Patrick. “Some of these people have been with us for 18 to 25 years. We like to think that the loyalty of our staff is proof that we’re doing something right.” In July, Shenanigan’s will celebrate another big anniversary -- 10 years since the opening of the east side location. Put Saturday, July 10th on your calendar...and get ready for a great big party. Shenanigans Sports Pub is located at Park Sheridan Plaza, 3303 Sheridan Street, just one mile west of I-95 and Sheridan Street across from TY Park, and Shenanigans East Side Pub is at 1300 South Federal Highway in Dania.

52,000-Square-Foot 3D Metal Printing and Manufacturing Plant Breaks Ground Sintavia celebrates ground breaking; poised to bring 135 jobs to Hollywood
processes. That is what we are developing now,” said Neff. “We are doing additive manufacturing using metal powder. We are a tier one manufacturing organization.”
Mayor Josh Levy was pleased to welcome Sintavia to Hollywood. “This will mean more jobs and it will contribute to our tax base,” he said. “It is very good to have a company construct a new facility
in Hollywood.” Commissioner Kevin Biederman is also glad to see this project. “This will be a nice addition to the business community in Hollywood,” he agreed.

Hollywood leaders and execudvolz@hollywoodgazette.com tives and personnel of Sintavia, a leading metal additive manufacturing company, got together to celebrate the ground breaking for the firm's new 52,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Hollywood. Construction is underway and the work should be completed by the end of 2018. The company will employ 135 skilled workers who will earn salaries averaging about $70,000. The company uses 3D printing or what is known as additive manufacturing technology to make parts from metal powder. It involves a laser passing multiple times over a metal powder bed, melting the powder layer by layer until a final part is produced. It will receive an order specifying what is needed then make the part. It can produce metal shapes for critical parts that cannot be cast or forged via traditional methods. The process is faster than traditional methods and better from an environmental standpoint because it produces no waste and occurs in a clean room manufacturing facility. Many of the components that will be produced at the new plant will be for the aerospace, power generation, and oil and gas industries. Sintavia CEO Brian Neff spoke at the ground breaking ceremony. “We are in the fourth industrial revolution. The first was steam, the second involved electronic development, the third involved mass production and the fourth will be about data and digitalized BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

moving from agricultural work to industrial work. Now young people must understand coding and computers to be able to compete in the job market,” he stated. Many high schools students love to work on computers and want to develop coding skills. The students in the AP class can become industry certified in Java Script by passing tests to show basic skills which will qualify them for entry level jobs in the field. Said student Farrah Hasan, “I think there is a good future in coding.” Jeff Freeman’s students are ready for the future.

NEW BUSINESS
Retro-Themed Lucky Street Tavern & Grill Opens across from Hard Rock BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
Be Happy, Get Lucky is the theme at the Lucky Street Tavern & Grill, the newest restaurant/bar entry in the newly emerging 441 Corridor across from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. Mayor Josh Levy and other local celebrities attended the ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, December 7th at the retro-style restaurant and bar that adds an interesting twist to ’40s and ’50s good time Americana comfort food (think chicken pot pie dumplings, and tempura grouper sandwiches). Between the interesting menu and the vintage-design comic art and the soon to begin live entertainment, there’s a lot to keep you interested at Lucky Street. The grand opening was the culmination of many months of work by manager Andrew Williams and restauranteur Paul Galluccio, who also owns the LIPS chain of restaurants in Florida, New York and Atlanta and the OB House in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Partner Edward Lafaye has been working with Paul for 15 years after many in the food business in Europe and America, most recently with the Caliente Cab company, taking the New York-based business country-wide.
Paul Galluccio loves the restaurant industry and, at age 80, he loves working. He has the energy and enthusiasm of a much younger man and just loves to make people happy. “This is a hobby for me,” he told the Hollywood Gazette. “I love putting things together.” “Lucky Street Tavern and Grill is both a restaurant and a lounge,” explained Lafaye, pointing out that even the space set up is designed to handle both, with low slung loungy sofas on one side and more traditional tables and chairs on the other. They envision the business as “A twist on the American Dream — Inspired by the hope, optimism and good times of the ’40s and ’50s,” and describe the menu as “Elevated Americana comfort food
with a Global Twist”. The menu is still being tweaked, said chef Ryan Lithgow. Lithgow is an up and coming Johnson & Wales graduate who worked most recently with the Starr Group, at Makoto in Bal Harbor. In addition to clever takes on American comfort foods in both small and large plates, there’s a super hot coal-fired pizza oven and a full raw bar. On the drink side, according to beverage director Sergio Rueda, there are 15 beers on draft so far and a variety of bottled beers as well as a full bar. Cocktails, created by renowned mixologist Jared Bolter, follow the theme with a modern twist on classic as well as fun drinks of the era, incorporating such
ingredients as Tang, iced tea, hot cocoa, Cocoa Puffs and milk. Entertainment is key to the day to night, restaurant to lounge concept — Lafaye says that live entertainment will start most nights at 10 and go till 2 am now, and eventually till 4. Additional parking spots are being added around the newly renovated plaza where Lucky Street is located (directly across 441 from the Hard Rock’s Lucky Street Garage) and the Tavern will be providing valet parking on many nights, including all nights when there is live entertainment. Plans are underway to develop an entertainment area on the roof of the restaurant with a swimming pool! “I want this to be a social place with lots of entertainment,” added Galluccio. Lucky Street Tavern & Grill is located at Rock Plaza, 5450 South State Road 7 in Hollywood, 33314. 844-777LUCK. www.LuckyStreetFL.com. Call for hours and additional information.

Planning Efforts Underway to Create Walkable Neighborhood Center and New Tri-Rail Station Near Downtown Hollywood Developing a TransitOriented Downtown Neighborhood Center Increasingly people prefer to live in urban centers that are compact, walkable, and have a mix of uses and services— precisely the type of place that transit-oriented development (TOD) creates. Characterized by a mix of uses, more-intense development, and walkable streets within a ½ mile of transit (a typical 10-minute walk), TOD promotes activity around the clock and brings potential riders closer to transit facilities. To that end, Hollywood leaders have been working with planning and zoning officials to make a new train station and neighborhood center happen in Hollywood. A Hollywood station would be a strategic stop between the major hubs of Aventura and Fort Lauderdale and would be at the center of a larger community including business and housing development. Residents living in transit-rich neighborhoods spend 16 percent less on transportation than those living in
auto-dependent neighborhoods—according to a study by the Center for Transit-Oriented Development—saving an average of $9,500 per household. Since transportation is the second-largest household expense, the reduction in transportation costs effectively increases disposable household income. How the Tri-Rail Coastal Link Fits In Designed to be a major commuter railroad for the east coast of Florida from Miami to Jupiter, the Tri-Rail Coastal Link service would operate on the Florida East Coast Railroad (FEC) track on Dixie Highway. Tri-Rail and other passenger trains now use the CSX tracks which run near I-95. The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, the Florida Department Transportation Council and the South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils are working together to develop the Coastal Link service. They believe the Coastal Link will spur economic development,
create jobs, improve regional access and mobility, and provide opportunities for transit-oriented development. Community Input Hollywood resident Patti Morin wants to be able to travel more throughout South Florida. But she is concerned about the growing amount of traffic and the difficulty of traveling by car in the region. “We need more public transportation in this area,” said Morin. “The congestion on I-95 is getting worse," added local resident Achim Nowak. "It is becoming harder for people to use their cars. I think a new train station would be wonderful for Hollywood.” Morin and Nowak were among the community stakeholders participating in the Tri-Rail Coastal Link Station Area Master Plan Community Planning Session on Saturday, December 2, at the Fred Lippman Multi-Purpose Center in Hollywood. Public sentiment at the meeting was leaning toward a downtown location near the Lippman
Center. Dana Little, urban design director for the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, said the meeting offered people an opportunity to give input on their desired train stations for the service's master plan. Working together in groups, they presented recommendations which included more green space, housing and business projects and efforts to improve the area. They want a new train station and updated development to surround it. Most of those who participated believe there is a need for more effective public transportation and an effort to encourage more people to walk or cycle in Hollywood. Market demand for urban centers is expected to grow as baby boomers age and younger generations embrace a more urban lifestyle that does not include rely on owning a car. According to AARP, by 2030, 20 percent of Americans will be over the age of 65, of which one in five will not drive. More information is available at http://tri-railcoastallink.com

For citizens concerned about the homeless, sick and suffering of our streets, the opportunity to ‘step up’ is now. The Jubilee’s Center’s 20th annual Walk 2 Stop Hungeris set for Sunday, March 4th, 2018 from 3 to 5 p.m. at St John’s Episcopal Church located at 1704 Buchanan Street in Hollywood. Registration begins at 2 p.m. The Jubilee Center’s philosophy is that homelessness is not a choice, rather a convergence of unresolved political, social and economic crises. Until a wide-spread solution is found, it is a grass- roots community issue and the Jubilee Center, has been leading this journey since 1995. Goals of the walk are to secure 200 sponsored walkers, collect 500 pounds of canned food and to raise $15,000 for the center’s operating fund. “This Walk confronts this issue and raises funds to support our Jubilee Soup Kitchen and food pantry,” said the orga-

nization’s Executive Director, LeAnna Vasquez.
“Feed the homeless; fuel humanity.” Walkers are encouraged to enlist friends, family and local businesses as sponsors. Finish-line festivities include refreshments, entertainment, fellowship and fun. “Every walker makes a difference and will benefit the feeding programs and social services of the Jubilee Center,” Vasquez concluded. Walker pledge forms are now available here, or if you would like to donate to the Jubilee Center, click here. For more information, visit www. jubileecenterbroward.org or call 954-9200106.
