Hollywood Historical Society Pop-Up Museum Installation Set for Jan. 19 BY ROBIN DRULARD “I don’t think any other South Florida city has as much old advertising material as Hollywood,” said Clive Taylor, self-styled Hollywood historian, collector of Hollywood memorabilia and frequent contributor to the Hollywood Gazette’s Hollywood History feature. “Joseph Young was a big believer in advertising, and he did a lot to promote the city in such high-end publications as the Literary Digest, the Wall Street Journal and the Saturday Evening Post.” Some of these ads will be displayed at the first-ever Hollywood Historical Society (HHS) PopUp Museum installation, Hollywood Then and Now, Shown In Ads and Postcards, set to debut at the ArtsPark on January 19, as part of the January Art Walk. Also included in the first exhibition will be ads from Young’s local magazine, the Hollywood Reporter, later-era ads from the now-defunct SunTattler, and a series of postcards and photos showing various Hollywood locations “then and now.” Most of the featured items come from Taylor’s personal collection and from the archives of the Historical Society. The team putting together the exhibition, spearheaded by Taylor and HHS president Karen Albertson, includes several members of the HHS and local artist/curator Alissa Alfonso, an expert in pop-ups, who will design the space.
Children are encouraged to visit and learn more about the history of their city. Kids will also have the opportunity to create and mail their own Hollywood postcards! The exhibit will be set up in the center of the ArtsPark building lobby on moveable boards and will include a sitting/viewing area. It will be featured on the electronic marquee in Young Circle and on the city website and will run for approximately two months. After that time, it may be moved to another location or may be changed to another theme, depending on the public’s response. “Young was a big salesman,” noted Taylor. “He was really trying to develop the idea of Hollywood as a dream city, and he did a lot of advertising in only a short window of time.” For more information on the exhibit or the Hollywood Historical Society, contact http://www. hollywoodhistoricalsociety.org, 954 923 5590, hollywoodflhistory@att.net

Hollywood Hills High School wants to start an Honors Academy Hollywood Hills High School in the process of starting an Honors Academy. This would be outside of the school’s military academy but would feature high school academics and be designed to prepare students for college. There are about 50 students who have demonstrated a strong interest in the honors academy, according to Major Reginald Smith, magnet coordinator at Hollywood Hills. “We have students who want to be part of a strong college prep program but they don’t want to be part of a military academy,” said Smith. “We want to teach the students about successful leadership. We want to offer them a strong academic program.” The students would learn about what it takes to be an effective leader and some of the successful leadership styles. They would take advance placement courses and duel enrollment courses. Smith believes the honors program will benefit many Hollywood Hills High School students. - D.V.

Hollywood Sgt. Nicola Williams Connects Cops with Kids in the Community BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT robin@hollywoodgazette.com
Too often, kids are raised to be afraid of the police, Sgt. Nicola Williams of the Hollywood Police Department (HPD) believes. So, since she was transferred into the Youth Services Unit here last July, Williams has taken action to build a bridge of collaboration between the kids, the cops and the community. In her new position, Williams is in charge of the programs that affect Hollywood’s kids in relation to the HPD. She coordinates the annual Police Holiday Toy Drive, which collects and distributes hundreds of toys to both needy local kids and patients at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. In addition, the former School Resource Officer (SRO) now oversees all the other SROs, the Police Explorer program and the Police Athletic League. She has expanded the four-year-old “Shop with a Cop” event into a full-scale party. “The kids always love these things,” she beamed, further explaining that the SROS, along with the guidance counselors, choose the kids who participate, based on need, "and some who are just awesome students.” The early-December event allows about 25 elementary school students to gift shop, with a police escort, for their immediate families, using $100 gift cards donated by the new Hollywood Walmart on 441 and Hollywood Boulevard. The evening is complete with SWAT Bearcat and mobile command vehicle demonstrations, a pizza party, and perhaps most exciting for the kids, a lights-flashing, sirens-blazing police escort to the event. This year, Sgt. Williams has initiated an SRO Meal Giveaway at holiday time, and next year, she plans on adding schools into the “National Walk with a Cop Day” program. What these programs achieve, said Williams, is that the children see the police as just people, people who wear a uniform to work, who are often parents just like their own. “We want them to see that we’re just people outside of our jobs,” she explained, “so that they don’t have that fear of us. We want to reach them while they’re young so that they feel okay coming to us when they need us. We want them to know that we’re human too.” Another program that Williams oversees is the Hollywood Police Explor10

Sgt. Nicola Williams at PAL Chief O'Brien and student at Shop with a Cop. ers. Geared to teens and young adults aged 14-21, Explorers is a program designed for motivated and serviceoriented young men and women who have an interest in the law enforcement field. Explorers receive training in all avenues of law enforcement. The program provides an opportunity for youth to gain personal satisfaction, enhance their leadership and teamwork skills, and make a difference in their community. While all of the programs impact the community kids, though, the one that probably impacts the most on a daily basis is PAL, the Police Athletic League. PAL was founded in 1914 by Police Commissioner Arthur Woods who began Play Streets and Police Captain John Sweeney who founded the Junior Police Clubs in New York City's Lower East Side. The two programs were eventually combined to become the Police Athletic League of New York City. Here in Hollywood, the PAL was started by Jerry Christiansen, a now-retired HPD Detective who was charged with keeping peace among the juvenile gangs in the city. “My job was getting the gangs to mingle and cut down on problems,” he recounted. “I was working out of my car, carrying around baseballs and bats. We really needed a place. There was an available city building on North 23rd Avenue and Sheridan, he continued, "so I asked the mayor if we could have it, and she said yes." Then, few years later, they really "scored" when they
acquired the current PAL building, right across the street, when the previous tenant, the minor league New York Yankees, moved out. The new building, adjacent to Boggs Field, was obtained with the help of the Law Enforcement Forfeiture Fund and former Hollywood Chief Scarberry. “The building had been the minor league Yankee Clubhouse,” said Christiansen. “It was all painted in pinstripes. Mickey Mantle played on this field. Bucky Dent was the last manager here. We’re fortunate to have this facility and these fields. The Yankees lost their contract with the city, a soccer program took over half and we were the winners -- we got the building and the field. “But really, it’s the kids who won," he said. " This is their program.” The PAL building contains a full weightlifting gym, basketball court, boxing ring, game room, three large-screen TVs, video games and a full computer room for classes, homework and tutoring. Outside, kids play football and practice cheerleading. There is homework help, food, and tutoring. There are bowling outings, dance competitions, movie nights and, maybe most important, college tours, often utilizing one of the new PAL vans generously donated by Hollywood Circle Inc., owner of Circ Residences and Circ Hotel, and Nice Cars Inc. of Hollywood. There is a free PAL summer camp available to selected kids, made possible entirely by donations from Hollywood businesses. Officers, volunteers, professional trainers, even professional athletes, come into the clubhouse and work out with and coach and train the kids. Between 200 and 500 kids come to PAL on a regular basis, and even
more during football season. One Hollywood kid who was particularly impacted by PAL is Patrick Agenor. A product of the PAL program, Agenor went on to graduate high school and college and serve in the military. He then returned home, joined the Hollywood Police Force, became a School Resource Officer, and coming full circle, last year was named the director of the Hollywood PAL. “That’s why we created this program, for people like Pat,” said Christiansen proudly. “He’s a PAL success story. We gave him the opportunity and he took it and ran with it. This is something that’s very special to me, and I’m very happy that Patrick is here.” What is the success rate of the Hollywood PAL? Do they follow their kids once they age out of the program? Said Christiansen: “They come back and they coach and they bring their kids back. We think we have about 20-25 percent, and we think that is fantastic. We only have them for a little bit, a few hours. You don't know what some of these kids are dealing with at home. You do what you can. We’ve had about 100 kids get scholarships since we’ve been here. It’s just a matter of caring, and they know that we care here.” “A lot of the kids are dealing with a lot here,” said Agador, who declared that his goal as director is to get 100 kids into college or the military. “Some of them are practically raising themselves. This is sometimes the only place they can feel safe. It’s a peaceful and safe place for them.” “And fun,” added Christenson. “Peaceful, safe and fun.”
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Celebrates 50th Heart Transplant The Pediatric Heart REPORTER dtv@gate.net Transplant Team at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital celebrated the 50th heart transplant at the hospital when Timothy Jones received a heart on December 1. Like most teens, 16 year old Timothy was enjoying the high school life, spending time with friends, working hard on his grades and playing the french horn for his school’s marching band. Jones, his family and his heart transplant team celebrated his new heart and the hospital’s milestone by reuniting on December 18 at the Conine Clubhouse located on the pediatric hospital’s campus. The Clubhouse is home away from home for families of children receiving medical care at the hospital. “It was difficult and hard for someone like me, who’d been healthy my whole life, to have to get a heart BY DAVID VOLZ
Timothy Jones was honored as being the 50th person to receive a heart transplant at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.
transplant,” Jones said. “It’s amazing to have a second chance at life, and I couldn’t ask for anything else.” Jones’ aunt, Marcia Wise, also expressed her gratitude to the team and donor family, calling Timothy’s second chance at life a miracle.
“Our family believes in prayer, and to look at Timothy today compared to where he was a few months ago, we call it a miracle,” Wise said. “To the donor family, thank you. We know it’s hard to make the decision to give part of your loved one to save someone else, and we hope we meet you all in the near future.” “It takes a village to help people that are as sick as our patients with end-stage heart failure. If it weren’t for this [pediatric heart transplant] program, many children in Broward County and South Florida would not be here,” said Frank Scholl, MD, Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation and Chief of the Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Halfway through his junior year, Timothy Jones started feeling sluggish and fatigued. He had to sleep sitting up, and it was at this point his parents brought him to the emergency room at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.
An evaluation by the cardiac team revealed grim news. He needed a new heart. Timothy was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, primary disease of the heart muscle that prevents the heart from pumping blood effectively. He waited for a new heart in the hospital for two months, under the care of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital heart transplant and critical care teams. Jones went home on December 8 and was able to spend the holidays with his family. “Our 50th heart transplant represents a significant milestone for this program. It means there are 50 kids in South Florida who got a chance to live longer and have a better quality of life,” said Dr. Scholl. “We will continue to provide transplant and advanced heart failure services to the needy infants, children, and teens of South Florida for many years to come.”

O
T.Y. Park: Hollywood’s Gathering Place for Half a Century
ver a BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD half-cen-COMMUNITY CORRESPONDENT tury robin@hollywoodgazette.com ago, on the north side of Sheridan Street just west of the I-95 highway — which wasn’t the super highway we know today — there was a dairy farm, a paper mill, and a cabinet millwork company. On the land, there was a lake, which had been made larger during the building of the highway, as rocks and land were needed for the construction. And there were kids climbing on the rocks and swimming in the lake, because South Broward, that area south of State Road 84, was painfully lacking in real parks and recreation areas where the children of the area could play. So a group of community leaders approached the state legislature, which created the South Broward Park District (SBPD), according to Bob Giacin, who was one of the city-appointed Hollywood representatives on, and later Chairman of, the new District’s Board. Other local business people instrumental in the SBPD included Fred Hunter of the eponymous funeral homes, and “Pizza-Pete” Peter Maceri, who served for several years as Administrator. The Board quickly identified the Ben Butler Dairy Farm, on Sheridan Street just east of I-95, as a prime spot for a new park. The land contained about 85 acres and included the lake. “The person probably most responsible for getting the park on that land was B. L. David,” Giacin believes. “He was part of the David family, which was quite influential in Hollywood. Mr. David was friendly with Mr. Butler, and he encouraged him to sell it to the city. “Hollywood didn’t have the money to buy it, and that’s when the South Broward Park District came in. David got the city of Hollywood to negotiate a short-term loan, and the South Broward Park District (SBPD) had taxing ability, and the state may have helped. The most important thing was that we wanted to secure the land before somebody else stepped in.” Ultimately the Park District bought the land from Mr. Butler. They hired local architect John (Jack) Kelso, and nationally-renowned, Miami-based landscape architect Edward Durell Stone to design the new recreational area. Topeekeegee Yugnee Park, nicknamed T.Y. Park, opened officially on December 9, 1971. The name means “gathering place” in Seminole and

Admission was 25 cents for local residents, double for others.
The park immediately became so popular that it produced an early cry for carpooling. and so well located that on a good day, it would attract up to 12,000. “There would be cars lined up from the entrance on Park Road,” Giacin recalled, “up to Sheridan, and then all the way east to 95. We had to make more room.” A 25 cent entry charge per person and per car — more for non-residents — filled the coffers but did little to lessen the crowds of people lined up to enjoy the park. So the SBPD used its power to obtain the aforementioned two parcels on the east side of the park and added space to bring the beautiful recreational area to the impressive 138.6 acres that it Water sports were always popular at T.Y Park. is today. was chosen by the SBPD, along with local Even then, Giacin said, there Seminole leaders, with respect to the origiwas not enough room, so the Board went nal inhabitants of the land. on to develop CB Smith Park in Pembroke The park was designed to hold 8,000 Pines into “more of a real park” he said, people but it was, said Giacin, so well done to take the pressure off T.Y., and to better
serve the residents of southwest Broward. Today, the beautiful, heavily treed oasis that is T.Y. Park is home to Castaway Island, a water park oasis which offers two interactive water playgrounds: one for smaller children and one for bigger kids. The aquatics complex includes a marina with boat rentals, a concession stand, and 14 Funbrellas available for rent. (Visit Castaway Island Web page for hours and fees.) The park also features a full-hookup RV campground with Wi-Fi, 13 rentable picnic shelters, an abundance of open picnic areas, and a large, open field suitable for a variety of family activities. There is a two-mile loop of paved pathways for walking, jogging, skating, and biking. Other popular areas include the large shaded playground, basketball and tennis courts, the fishing pier, and the scenic lake water fountain. Plus, on any given weekend, you may see various cultural and performance groups practicing! Earlier this year, the park opened “The Little Free Library” outside the park office, in honor of the late Margie Grimes, who had been the Senior Park Manager. The Little Free Library box is located outside the park office. Also, a little-known secret is that if you log your walking or running miles at the office, once you hit 100 miles, you’ll earn a commemorative t-shirt! The Friends of T.Y. Park, Inc. ( a 501 (c ) 3 non profit), was established in 2017. Their mission is to ensure that T.Y. Park continues to thrive as a health and fitness resource, social gathering place, and a sustainable natural environment. Barry Faske, Vice President of Operations and Director (and co-founder) of The Friends of T.Y. Park, said that the group is, in its first year, proud of what they have achieved so far, and looks forward to expanding its efforts towards an even greater Topeekeegee Yugnee Park, and a better South Florida for the future. Bob Giacin said that he still gets a warm and fuzzy feeling every time he drives past T.Y. Park, knowing that he was a small part of the public-private partnership that it took to get the job done and bring this magnificent piece of urban recreational tranquility into existence. Betsy Alvarez wins 2018 Scavenger Hunt During the first week of December, Hollywood Scavenger Hunt participants embarked upon their annual "hunt for the good," throughout Hollywood completing nearly 1,000 missions for fun, friendship and five hundred bucks. Dania Beach resident Betsy Alvarez was declared the winner after a six team tie-breaker was held at T.Y Park on Dec. 7. Alvarez has competed in previous year's hunts and has always been friendly and helpful to new participants.
During the course of the 3-day event, participants got to write a song and perform it live, meet Captain the Sea Turtle, play in the snow, form a conga line on the Broadwalk-- all while searching the city for the people places and things that make Hollywood a special place. The next hunt is already being planned and will be only one day in December of 2019. Follow the Hollywood Scavenger Hunt facebook.com/hollywoodscavengerhunt/ for next year's hunt date to be announced or visit hollywoodscavengerhunt.com for details.

Hair extension industry leader Indique opens boutique in Downtown Hollywood
S
BY CARON CONWAY
tyle-conscious South Floridians seeking the same lustrous locks sported by Lady Gaga, Rihanna and other A-list celebrities need look no farther than Downtown Hollywood, where premium hair extension company Indique recently opened a new boutique offering its line of exclusive products and unique consultation experience. Established in 2007, Indique is an internationally known luxury brand providing the highest- quality virgin human hair extensions. A variety of versatile, natural and durable hair products ranging from $85 to $330 is available through retail stores, an online shop and distributors throughout the U.S., Central America, Europe, Asia and Africa. Indique Boutique Hollywood, which opened Nov. 16 at 1848 Polk St., is the fast-growing company’s 16th location and the only one in Florida. There currently are boutiques in 10 other states and one in Johannesburg, South Africa. A boutique in Ghana, West Africa, will open next, with four more locations planned for 2019. Indique was founded by Ericka Dotson, a stylist who wanted to fill the void in the hair extension industry with a premier, knowledgeable and customer-orientated business, and India native Krishan Jhalani, who ran an Indian human hair export company. With an impressive client base that includes Gabrielle Union, Brandy, Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, Kelly Rowland, La La Vazquez and Zendaya, outstanding customer service remains a top priority. Boutique clients are encouraged by friendly Indique hair extension experts to see, touch and evaluate as many pieces as they wish – unlike the often
restrictive experience in the typical beauty supply store. The opening of the Hollywood location puts the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district in the company of Indique Boutique cities in major metropolitan areas throughout the U.S., including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and New York City. “We look forward to being a fixture within Hollywood’s Downtown District community,” said Dotson, who serves as Indique’s creative director. “Hollywood’s proximity between Miami and Fort Lauderdale provides the perfect solution for clients in the area who want premium hair that is easily accessible,” she added. “The pedestrian- friendly environment mixed with thriving boutiques and restaurants will help drive new business and enhance our customer experience.” Indique Boutique - Hollywood hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The store is closed for lunch from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday - Friday and noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday. For more information, call 786-347-1900 or visit www.indiquehair.com/hollywood

hen it comes to unique and exciting entertainment options, Extreme Axe Throwing in Downtown Hollywood hits the bull’s-eye. Formerly known mainly for its association with lumberjack competitions, axe throwing is a growing trend across the country at bars and other indoor venues, where hurling a hatchet at a target puts an exhilarating new spin on the old familiar game of darts. And what makes the Extreme Axe experience stand out from the competition is the digital technology that’s been implemented in some of the ranges at its two South Florida locations. Extreme Axe Throwing Hollywood opened Dec. 12 at 2046 Hollywood Blvd., next door to sister business Boxroom Escape Games, a collection of live escape rooms that opened a little over a year ago. Business is booming at the first Extreme Axe location, which opened just a couple of months ago in Downtown Miami. “The response is overwhelming,” said co-owner Alexander Maslinkovsky. “After airing on local and national TV and being in the local papers, requests for bookings and team-building events came in like crazy.” When it comes to axe throwing, skill has nothing to do with a player’s size, age or gender, stressed Jennifer Nesselhaus, operations manager for Extreme Axe Hollywood and Boxroom Escape Games. “Anyone can throw an axe, but getting it to stick on the target is a different story. The technique is key, which definitely comes with practice and knowing what works for you,” she said. “Our
‘axeperts’ will teach you the basics of throwing and work with you on tweaking your technique. We will have you landing the axe on the target by the end of your session.” Participants can opt for tournamentstyle action using official WATL (World Axe Throwing League) targets or take a stab at the player-interactive games, which have been likened to playing the popular Candy Crush video game – only using an axe. One of the oldest sports in existence, axe throwing has been increasing in popularity in recent years as both a fun indoor activity and the new league sport. Extreme Axe Throwing Hollywood is a member of the World Axe Throwing League. Players can also join the league and compete at axethrowing venues around the world. Extreme Axe adds a unique offering to the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district, home to an eclectic array of restaurants and businesses, art galleries and cultural facilities, and special and recurring events. Maslinkovsky said Extreme Axe Throwing Hollywood is the ideal complement to Boxroom Escape Games. “With the success of our escape rooms, we knew it would be a perfect fit,” he said. The 1,700-square-foot Extreme Axe space can accommodate corporate as well as private events such as birthday parties and other special occasions. An hour and a half of axe-throwing action with a brief training session is $35. For more information on availability and booking special events, call 754-7770246 or visit www.extremeaxe.com.
Arrested at 19 and facing the rest of my life behind bars made me re-evaluate myself and what my life meant to me. I realized that my misguidance was due to my lack of education. With this revelation, I decided to take control of my life, I began taking classes to earn my High School Diploma which I can proudly say I’ve done. I then completed a Vocational Course. (CADD). Unfortunately, due to my sentence, educational opportunities are limited. However, I continue to self-educate. I’m looking for someone I can build a strong, lasting friendship with. Over these years I’ve lost contact with family and friends and as the saying goes, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind.” My loneliness led me to believe that sustaining a friendship beyond these walls was virtually impossible. However, that was until I began to understand myself and understand
