FOR GOODNESS SAKE

Free fishing trips offered to military veterans

Erich Speckin’s personal ties to dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com military veterans inspired the Hollywood resident to found CSI Warrior Fishing South Florida, a 501(c)(3) organization based at the north end of the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk that takes vets on free fishing trips. Speckin hired a full-time experienced sea captain for his 35-foot Donzi fishing boat and offers five trips a week for groups of up to six anglers to cast their line for yellowtail snapper, wahoo, sailfish, grouper, mahi mahi, tuna, king mackerel and shark. The mission of CSI Warrior Fishing South Florida is to provide recreational and rehabilitation services to veterans, wounded soldiers and active duty military personnel to help them readapt to civilian life. “I do this because I came from a military family and my two best friends from high school were in the military. My grandfather is a World War II veteran,” Speckin said. “I want to support the military.” He has found that some veterans still struggle with memories of difficult war situations, while others face the challenges of joining the civilian workforce. “Studies conducted at universities have found that outdoor recreation helps PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder),” said Speckin. CSI Warrior Fishing South Florida offers fishing trips for both veterans and supporters. Veterans and a guest can enjoy a day of fishing, free of charge, with proof of service such as a DD214. Supporters, or nonmilitary anglers, pay $125 an hour for a four- or eighthour excursion, which includes up to four guests. Proceeds from supporters’ bookings help vets fish for free. “This gives veterans a chance to experience a fishing trip,” Speckin said. CSI Warrior Fishing supplies the boat, fishing tackle, bait, fishing licenses and ice. Anglers are permitted to bring coolers. Free parking is available at the dock at 3300 N. Ocean Drive, located south of Sheridan Street in Hollywood. Several restaurants,

hotels and parks are within walking distance. CSI Warrior Fishing gratefully accepts donations to help fund its charitable mission. A $25 donation provides lunch for up to three veterans during their fishing excursion. A $100 donation covers engine fuel for a day. CSI Warrior Fishing South Florida is a part of Speckin Charities. Along with funding CSI Warrior Fishing, Speckin oversees the

funding and operation of Outdoor Warrior Adventure excursions and Santa’s Wish List. Outdoor Warrior Adventure provides outdoor wilderness recreation for veterans, such as hunting and fishing excursions, in a variety of locations that include Alaska, Florida, Iowa and Michigan. Santa’s Wish List (www. santaswishlist.org) is a registered 501(c)(3) charity founded by Speckin several years

ago that fulfills the Christmas gift wishes of the children of needy families in Florida and Michigan who are identified through churches, schools and community members. Before coming to Hollywood, Newaldass served as the Director of Acquisitions and Development for the Menkiti Group, a District of Columbia-based developer, with a focus on community revitalization. In this position, Newaldass had a multi-faceted role from securing and managing development projects, to overseeing the company’s diverse portfolio of income-producing residential and commercial assets. Earlier, Newaldass worked for the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development with the District of Columbia government. He was in charge of nearly $2.5 billion of development projects, including the McMillan Sand Filtration site, and the Northwest One revitalization.

Melvin Standley is appointed Assistant Manager for Public Safety Melvin Standley was appointed as the Assistant City Manager for Public Safety with the City of Hollywood, effective June 1, by City Manager Dr. Wazir Ishmael. Standley most recently worked for the City of Miramar for 13 years. He served as the Chief of Police for ten years and introduced systematic and operational accountability through data base resource allocation, and award winning community policing programs. In 2010, he was promoted to Public Safety Director where he served for three years. Tomas Sanchez remains the Interim Police Chief for Hollywood.

Downtown Hollywood will soon have a new 17-story building During a recent meeting, the Hollywood Commission agreed to an ordinance amending a master development plan that will allow for the development of the Jed Tower. The properties will be located at 410 North Federal Highway and 1817 Taylor Street just

north of ArtsPark at Young Circle. The plans call for a mixed use building that will include 134 housing units and retail space. It will feature 333,613 square feet and will have a contemporary design. Also, the Commission agreed to an ordinance approving the 20 percent flexibility rule to change the land use designation from industrial to commercial. The property includes about 1.14 acres at 2800 North 28th Terrace. Plans call for the demolition of an older Denny’s that will then be rebuilt as a new Denny’s restaurant.

Jaxon’s Ice Cream receives the Key to the City Mayor Peter Bober presented Jaxon’s Ice Cream Parlor the Key to the City during a Hollywood commission meeting. He praised Jaxon’s for its work in the community and the high quality of ice cream it serves. Linda Zakhiem, the owner of Jaxon’s said, “I am honored and humbled to receive the Key to the City. We will continue to serve the best ice cream.” Zakheim said the Key to the City would honor the memory of her father, Monroe Udell, the founder of Jaxon’s more than 50 years ago. He died a year ago at age 86.

Meyerhoff Focal Point Senior Center to move to Miramar The Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center, Inc. / Southeast Focal Point, which has been in Hollywood for 38 years, will be moving to Miramar and will relocate at 6700 Miramar Parkway on July 1. The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Broward County, the Focal Point’s main funding agency put the funding for the program up for bid in March of 2015. The City of Hollywood did not bid for the Senior Center. “Our seniors wanted Hollywood to bid for us because most of the seniors who participate live in Hollywood,” said Carmen Porte, executive director for the Center She said that the people who participate in the senior center went to meetings with Hollywood leaders where the bid was discussed but the City declined to bid. “Miramar bid for us and so now Miramar will provide the program,” said Porte. Rachel Menton, recreation and volunteer coordinator is a staff member who will lose her position because of the move. The current Senior Center staff members will lose their jobs because there are no openings in the Miramar facility. Many of those staff members are older and have been with the Center for many years. Menton is disappointed that the Center is moving and believes poor management from the previous leadership of the Center is the reason for the loss of the program. She believes that the seniors who come to the Meyerhoff Center may have difficulty going to Miramar and adjusting to the program there. “The loss of the Meyerhoff Center is heartbreaking, disappointing and completely

BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

unnecessary. Had the financial issues been addressed earlier this would not have happened,” said Menton. “I am very attached to the men and women who come to the Center. We take care of them and they are our family. And we are going to lose our family.”

Aerospace Precision acquires Luchner Tool Engineering Aerospace Precision, an FAA/EASA repair facility with operations in Hollywood has completed an acquisition of Luchner Tool Engineering. With this acquisition, Aerospace Precision is moving Luchner’s aircraft maintenance tooling, engine tool and GSE manufacturing operations from San Diego, California to Hollywood. Aerospace Precision currently has 40 employees working in Hollywood and is expected to create 25 new jobs in Hollywood, according to a statement from the Office of Governor Rick Scott.

Hollywood Commission approves purchases The Hollywood Commission agreed to a number of major purchases during a recent meeting. A resolution was passed approving a purchase order between Hall-Mark Fire Apparatus and the City of Hollywood for the purchase of one 2016 Horton Model 623 Ambulance for an estimated amount of $287,252. A resolution was passed authorizing the application for and if awarded the acceptance of, COPS Community Policing Development 2015 Grant Funds from the United States Department of Justice to defray the costs of Community Policing Initiatives. This would include costs associated problem-oriented police training, the Neighborhood Watch program, this will include distribution of pamphlets and events such as National Night Out and problem oriented policing projects. It will include the Homeless Outreach program and other programs. It will include the purchase of equipment such as motion sensors, CCTV trailers and uniforms in an amount not more than $238,100. A resolution was passed approving a contract between GPE Engineering and General Contractors Corp. and the City of Hollywood for construction services for the Lift Station Conversion/Upgrade program for Lift Stations A-10, located at 6951 Fillmore Street and A-11 located at 7415 McKinley Street. It is approved Capital Improvement Project. The contract is for $1,097,606.

Hollywood Community Meetings gain attendance Hollywood residents came together at City Hall to participate in a Community Meeting on June 24. The event was well attended with standing room only in commission chambers. Residents were able to discuss any concerns or problems they were having involving the City of Hollywood.

Some of the concerns raised included Federal Highway redevelopment, dangerous dog laws, traffic congestion on Connecticut Street, strategic plans for code enforcement, what plans the City has for blighted apartments, ordinances involving pan handlers, party houses and over development on the beach. Many of the residents were concerned about the heavy traffic in the city. They were concerned that more housing developments would create even more traffic, especially in the beach area. Commissioner Peter Hernandez hosted the meeting. However, most of the commissioners were present and they sat on the dais. They participated in the meeting and responded to resident concerns. City administrators were also present.

Hollywood Commission holds budget workshop The Hollywood Commission held a workshop to discuss the fiscal year 2015/2016 budget. The Commission will set a not-to-exceed millage rate during a meeting on July 8. Last year’s total budget was $497,745,939. A number of concerns were raised during the meeting. There is a $12 million gap in the overall budget and a $9.5 million gap in the general fund, which is part of the overall budget. One concern involves the 13th check for pensioners. The police pension board and the fire pension board have approved and issued supplemental distributions also known as 13th checks to their pensioners for the years 2012 and 2013. The request for 13th checks for the general employees’ pensioners for 2012 and 2013 is still pending and no checks have been issued. The pension funds have done well recently, but still have actuarial losses to make up from previous years for poor investment fund performance. The City may sue the pension boards to prevent them from issuing 13th checks while the funds still show overall investment losses. This would be known as seeking compliance with state statutes for the 13th check. Through collective bargaining with the City’s unions, the 13th check was added as a benefit for fire department pensioners in 1998, police department pensioners in 2000 and general employees’ pensioners in 2002. When each of the city’s pension plans had funding ratios above 80 percent. Now plans are less than 55 percent funded, according to Raelin Storey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. Another issue the Commission was asked to consider to address the budget shortfall is some restructuring of the Beach District of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). This might include absorbing all of the Beach CRA functions into city operations and placing tax revenue generated in the district into the general fund. Other alternative might include changing the boundaries of the Beach District of the CRA or re-examining CRA payments in lieu of taxes to the city. And city staff will recommend to the commission that the red light camera program to be discontinued. Because of recent legal decisions involving the red light camera program that went against Hollywood and the cost of changes to make the progra m compliant with state requirements, city staff believes the red light camera program should be discontinued.

Miss Nadine for the People

Community leader / activist / humanitarian turns 60

“I was homeless twice ... I know what it feels like to be hungry without a family.”

BY HOWARD CARTER III FEATURE CORRESPONDENT h@hollywoodgazette.com

-Nadine McCrea

Mrs. Nadine McCrea, affectionately known as Miss Nadine, started in the early 80’s handing food out from her car to neighboring families that were hungry and in need. This act of kindness and generosity would grow into one of Hollywood’s most important non-profit organizations, Community Enhancement Collaboration. Serving food weekly to up to over 1,000 people and families in the Washington Park and surrounding area of Hollywood, CEC has become a safe haven for the community and a food bank to some families, including many with free withdrawals and nutritional dividends.

Hollywood Gazette sat down recently with Miss Nadine to learn more about a woman who has been a mother to an entire community for the past three decades. This month she is turning 60 and in true fashion she is celebrating her birthday by giving back. For $60 dollars you can come out and celebrate with her enjoying great food, music, and fun. $40.00 will go back to the Community Enhancement Collaboration which in turn helps thousands

of needy children and families in the community. Miss Nadine shares a timeless story of how it all started: anxiously sitting in her living room one afternoon with her blood boiling. Outside her house, just a few feet away, some neighbors were shooting cans with handguns. Before realizing, she picked up the phone and dialed the police. Her call was not only to passively dodge bullets in the “comfort” of her own home, but completely transformed the call into a crusade against guns and violence and the need for more education in her community. She confides that (CEC) couldn’t have been done without all of the help from her loyal and dedicated volunteers. One special volunteer, in particular, has been there every step of the way. Nadine's devoted husband, Eulices McCrea, would all too often come home from a hard days work expecting nothing but a simple dinner only to find the refrigerator had been emptied to feed neighbors who were less fortunate than they. “I was homeless twice and once just me and my husband. I know what it feels

Help Nadine Kick off the 60's with $60! 60 for 60 Help Nadine kick off the 60's

like to be hungry without a family.” McCrea went on to share the hard times early on in her life and how she uses those memories for a passion that fuel this pillar in our community. On the same day as my interview, I became aware of a mother of six who escaped being a victim of domestic violence and was able to feed her children because of Miss Nadine and CEC. Unfortunately, during the economic slump much of CEC’s funding was cut back or cut completely and just recently one of their major funding partners regrettably had to discontinue their support. However, the need continues to grow. On average CEC distributes 60 pounds of food twice a week and they cannot continue without your help. For Miss Nadine’s 60th Birthday Party several concerned people in the community are using her celebration as catalyst for a fundraiser.

I could paint “Ifa picture, there would be no more hunger or homelessness in America.” -Nadine McCrea All are invited to come and support the Community Enhancement Collaboration by attending Nadine’s 60 for $60 Birthday party/fundraiser on Saturday, July 18th, at Rudy’s Restaurant (located inside the Hollywood Beach Golf Resort) from 6-9 p.m. Donations can also be made by calling 954-987-0625 or email nmccrea@ cecwashpark.org. Thirty years ago Miss Nadine picked up the phone to make a faithful call to help her community. Little did she know that a call of a higher order was being answered by her on spirit. Miss Nadine called the police that day but she also called upon herself to be the change agent in her community. CEC needs your help. See you there!

ABOUT THE COVER

HOLLYWOOD FAMILY CELEBRATES A DECADE OF HEALTH SINCE HUSBAND'S KIDNEY DONATION TO WIFE Michelle Vegh Martin and her husband Ty grew up in Hollywood. "I arrived from New Jersey when I was five back in 1978. Originally from New Orleans, Ty came from California in 1987 due to his parents' love of Miami Vice." They attended South Broward High School and started dating in the 10th grade after having the same Spanish II class with Mrs. Ruiz. "He asked me out at Oceanwalk in front of the pizza place. Our first date was at Bennigans (now Azteca), then off to a movie at Sheridan 7, naturally!" Although Ty lived just a block off Coolidge and US1, he would drive all the way to 28th and Monroe each morning just to spare Michelle the school bus ride. A few years after graduation, they were married at the First Presbyterian Church on Hollwood Boulevard. Their first home was in Michelle's father's condo near West Lake Village. They attended BCC and received their AAs. As they began taking classes at FAU in Davie, Michelle became very sick and was diagnosed with Lupus. Her studies had to be put on hold and soon she became a regular at Memorial. Luckily, her parents lived directly across the street from the hospital. Unable to work or attend school, she decided to help plan her SBHS 10-year high school class reunion. "It helped to keep me busy and in touch with all my old classmates," said Michelle. "I went into remission and our reunion in 2001 at the Bahia Mar was a complete success." Shortly thereafter, the Lupus returned and she began dialysis at DaVita off 40th and Hollywood Blvd for two years. "My husband was so strong and had to make

decisions no one should ever have had to, especially at the young age of 30." Finally, after years of illness, it was decided that she would be able to have a kidney transplant. Following extensive testing, Michelle's husband was cleared to be her donor. On July 13, 2005 at UM/JMH, Ty gave Michelle his right kidney, leaving him with an 18" scar and removal of half a rib. Her health improved immediately, no longer requiring doctors visits, hospital stays and dialysis. Not long after the transplant, they were given the green light to start their long-awaited family, and exactly a year and a week after the transplant, they became pregnant with their first child. "I enjoyed eight months of a perfect pregnancy, when suddenly my water broke and off to Jackson we went. Our son Jake was born at 36 weeks in March 2007. Only weighing a little over 5 pounds. He looked so tiny, but was healthy and strong," recalls Michelle. Blessed with their little family, Michelle and Ty finally got to enjoy the nuances of being a Mommy and Daddy, rather than patient and caretaker. With Michelle's transplant team's blessing, they began planning for their second child. And in August 2011, they welcomed their daughter Isla. "Our family was finally complete," said Michelle. "Now my days are spent running after a toddler and waiting in the car line for my son, along with planning my class reunions." Ty has worked at Kindred Hospital of Hollywood for just over 20 years and is the Purchasing Director. They currently live in east Pembroke Pines, "but we are as 'Hollywood' as you get!" S. Florida Wildlife Center introduces fee-based service to help homeowners humanely remove unwanted animals BY DAVID VOLZ

South Florida is an area that offers a huge diversity of dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com wildlife. And sometimes the animals decide that human dwellings offer a better home than the wild. Many property owners aren’t sure how to remove the unwanted animals and may harm or even kill the animals. This is something that the South Florida Wildlife Center wants to avoid. The organization, which cares for 12,000 injured and orphaned animals annually recently introduced its fee-based service, Humane Wildlife Services. This is a program that helps homeowners and businesses that want to humanely resolve conflicts with animals. Humane Wildlife Services will go to a location in a van and remove the animal using devices such as boxes with one way doors. “We want to encourage wildlife to self-evict. We want mothers and their babies to be reunited. To survive in the wild, animals can’t be stupid. They will look for the best place to survive,” said Sherry Schlueter, executive director of the of the South Florida Wildlife Center. Raccoons, opossums and squirrels are just of the animals that may choose to live in a human dwelling. John Griffin, director of the Urban Wildlife Sector for the Humane Society of the United States participated in the unveiling of the program. “Many animals don’t make a distinction between buildings occupied by people and wildlife areas. They usually will have several habitats. CORRESPONDENT

Ken Nirenberg a field technician shows a device with a one way door that encourages animals to self evict from properties where they are not wanted.

Animal mothers are very protective of their young. We want to reunite animal mothers with their babies,” said Griffin. Humane Wildlife Services will offer effective and exclusion techniques for residences and businesses in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties. It is a humane alternative to ineffective methods based on trapping alone. The service gets to the root of the problem when wildlife takes up residence in buildings. The Center cares for many animals with the goal of rehabilitating them and returning them back to nature, according to Schlueter. This service is a humane alternative to ineffective methods based on trapping alone. The service gets to the root of the problem when wildlife takes up residence in homes and businesses. HWS is a fully insured, fee-based program of the South Florida Wildlife Center providing home and business owners, HOAs, and property managers with professional and effective solutions to resolve wildlife issues, humanely and permanently. HWS has already been successfully running in the Washington D.C. area. Hollywood Chamber names Stephen Rowe Business Person of the Year BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Long before Stephen Rowe II became the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s 2015 Small Business Person of the Year, he learned about leadership and dedication to service during his decade serving in the U.S. Army. Rowe, the co-owner of Mr. Restoration, a 24/7 water, mold, fire and smoke emergency service company in Hollywood, was honored May 26 at the Broward County Council of Chambers annual luncheon along with 13 other chambers’ Small Business Person of the Year recipients. Rowe was selected for the local honor based on his business leadership, business ethics, personal community service, and high level of service, commitment and energy directed toward business community efforts, in addition to being the owner of a profitable small business (less than 100 employees).

to help their customers with the insurance aspect of the claim. Recognizing an opportunity to be a much greater benefit to their clients, Rowe and Mailey founded Mr. Restoration, which addresses water, fire and mold damage in residential and commercial properties. Rowe, a self-proclaimed “country boy with city ways,” settled down in 2008 in South Florida, where he is extremely active

in the community as a dedicated member of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors, a graduate of Leadership Hollywood Class 37 and a member of the Hallandale Beach Education Advisory Board. When the Chamber had flooding last summer, Rowe took care of the disaster response, and his team was reliable, competent, professional and courteous.

Clients choose to work with Rowe for his ethics, experience and expertise, and his strong base of loyal customers has led to significant growth of Mr. Restoration, including a second location that will be opening in Tampa. For more information, visit www. mrrestorationflorida.com.

The Dayton, Ohio, native entered the military in 1994 and served in a variety of duties and assignments, including expert rifleman, Army paratrooper and squad leader responsible for the combat readiness of crew, vehicles and equipment in excess of $1.5 million. Notable deployments included the former Republic of Yugoslavia and Operation Iraqi Freedom. These challenges and accomplishments set the standard for Rowe’s “can do” attitude. It also was in the Army where Rowe met his future business partner, Matthew T. Mailey, when the two young men were only 19. After serving their time in the Army, the best friends pursued careers as independent insurance adjusters and worked thousands of property claims adjusting losses for fire, smoke, mold, water, hurricanes, tornados, floods and earthquakes. Through their dealings with various restoration companies, Rowe and Mailey realized that most of them were overcharging and not delivering what was promised, and these companies also had no real understanding of how Hollywood Gazette | 954-962-8180 | www.hollywoodgazette.com

The City of Hollywood dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Department of Public Works Environmental and Solid Waste Services recently conducted a survey asking residents if their co-mingled collection needs were being met. The survey took place in March 2015 online, in “New Horizons,” the city’s quarterly publication and was distributed in Hall and community centers. There were 422 surveys received by the city. Co-mingled waste removal takes place once a week and residents were asked if they wanted this service to be changed to every two weeks, monthly or on-demand. Most of the residents who responded to the survey want to keep the collection of co-mingled trash on a weekly basis. They are very happy with the service that is being provided by Waste Pro USA, Inc. Commissioner Patricia Asseff expressed concern that bulk trash items were being allowed to linger for collection because of the current collection arrangement. Public Works plans to offer another survey to customers in the coming months. The Commission agreed to an ordinance regarding vacation rental homes during the recent meeting. program for property owners who want to rent homes people on a short-term basis. This would involve homes that are rented for a one night party or a week’s vacation. As of January 1, 2016, property owners would get a vacation rental license that would be good for one year. This would involve an annual inspection to ensure the building meets fire and safety codes. They will be subject to inspections at any time. Garbage carts would have to be kept in screened areas and garbage would have to be properly disposed of. A property owner or rental agent would have to be available by telephone 24 hours a day, seven days a week and able to be present at the property within 30 minutes of notification. Information would have to be posted within the property containing information on off street parking, location of nearest hospital and local non-emergency police and fire phone numbers and a building evacuation map. Violators might be punished by citations of $250 for the first violation, $500 for the second violation and suspension of the vacation rental license after the third citation. After five violations the license can be revoked.

MEMORIAL REHABILITATION INSTITUTE PROGRAM USES SPORTS TO HEAL BODY AND MIND to help them adapt to a condition such as the loss of a limb, or as a bridge to a more active life after recovery.

by L. Kenneth Barnett Commissioner South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System

I

t used to be that an illness like a stroke, or a medical condition such as an amputation or spinal cord or brain injury, would keep patients from ever engaging in sports again. But now, people who are coping with disabilities or who are in rehabilitation can get back to the sports and recreational activities they love. Memorial Rehabilitation Institute is helping to lead the way, with its Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program. Because the rehabilitation process involves more than just physical therapy, the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program provides patients with a wide range of sports and recreational activities, all of which have been specially redesigned to accommodate their needs and get them “back to their max.” “Our theme is ‘Go Beyond,’ which means we encourage patients to exceed the limitations that they or others may place on them, and refuse to let their current situations dictate the quality of their lives,” says Ray Shipman, a former member of the NFL New Orleans Saints and Manager, Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program at Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, Memorial Regional Hospital South. Patients in the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program can benefit from a broad array of adaptive activities for both children and adults — including adaptive bowling, adaptive cycling and mountain biking, adaptive rowing, adaptive water aerobics, fishing, rugby, and wheelchair basketball and tennis. Rehab patients don’t have to be former athletes to participate. Many either want to use sports

Barnett- HG-Adapt Sports.indd 1

And in case you’re wondering, studies that have shown that adaptive sports work! They offer numerous long-term and therapeutic benefits, including the ability to develop new skills, become more independent, increase motivation and improve selfesteem. Along the way, rehab patients can reduce their stress levels, maintain healthy weights — and best of all, make new friends with other adaptive athletes in the program. This spring, the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program at Memorial Rehabilitation Institute hosted a free Adaptive Sports Expo at Memorial Regional Hospital South. More than 200 rehabilitation patients and their friends and families attended to hear speakers, participate in panel discussions, meet with vendors who cater to the physically challenged, and play a few games. “It’s an honor for me to work with adaptive sports patients at Memorial Rehabilitation Institute,” Mr. Shipman says. “They just refuse to let their disabilities — whether from an illness or an accident — hold them back. It’s inspiring.” As a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I’m pleased to join Ray Shipman in saluting the patients in Memorial’s Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program. Through their hard work and determination, they’re finding that it’s possible to exceed their expectations and achieve their dreams. They’re truly Going Beyond.

How you can do your part to help conserve water this summer Even though the rainy season has begun in South Florida, the area is slightly below normal rainfall levels for this point in the year. In fact, the South Florida Water Management District recently announced the month of May was below average rainfall. Additionally, Broward County

currently ranks very high on the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) indicating that conditions are favorable for occurrences of wildfire. Due to the lack of rainfall right now it is imperative property owners do their part to help conserve water. Broward County’s year-round water

restrictions help to ensure we have the water we need today and in the future. And, when you save water, you save money and the environment. As a reminder, even-numbered addresses, rights of way, or locations without addresses, and those who irrigate both even and odd addresses

within the same zones (which may include multi-family units and homeowners associations) may water Thursday and/or Sunday, before 10am or after 4 pm. Odd-numbered addresses may water Wednesday and/or Saturday, before 10am or after 4 pm. Broward County has a number of programs that address water conservation, both indoors and outdoors. To learn more about these programs, watering new lawns and landscapes and other water uses call 1-800-270-9794 or visit www. conservationpays.com. HEALTH NEWS

Memorial Hospital provides cutting-edge technology to help patients walk more naturally or regain hand function after neurological disorders Foot Drop is a condition where the muscles in the foot are too weak to properly lift the foot and toes while walking. The awardwinning Bioness L300® Foot Drop System helps to alleviate walking challenges that may result from stroke, traumatic brain injury, incomplete spinal cord injury, or multiple sclerosis. The Bioness L300Plus System is an advanced functional electrical stimulation (FES) system that stimulates the nerves in your lower leg, activating muscles to not only lift the foot, but also provides knee stability. These devices may enable you to walk more naturally, giving you the potential to improve your walking even when the devices are not on. These devices can take the place of a plastic brace that historically has been the only treatment option. The Bioness devices are designed to be used at home on a daily basis after you’re been appropriately evaluated. Reaching, grasping, opening and closing your hand are all possible with the Bioness H200 Wireless Hand Rehabilitation System. The H200 Wireless System may help you regain function in your hand and wrist and get back to your daily activities if your condition is due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, and certain neurological disorders. The Bioness H200 Wireless System also uses FES to activate the nerves that control the muscles in the hand and forearm. Programs customized for your specific needs and rehabilitation goals may help you perform daily activities and also reeducate your muscles over time. These devices are available locally within the Memorial Healthcare System.

BROWARD COUNTY

Broward Commission to consider reduced penalty for marijuana possession The Broward CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Commission agreed to consider a future ordinance that could reduce the punishment for misdemeanor marijuana possession. Under the initial proposal, law enforcement officers would have the option of issuing a misdemeanor civil citation punishable by a $100 fine or make an arrest if a person is caught with twenty grams of marijuana or less in Broward County. The proposal would not decriminalize or legalize marijuana possession in Broward County, but it would allow people who are carrying a small amount to pay a fine rather than face criminal charges and a criminal record. "I have represented a low to BY DAVID VOLZ

The devices provide a slight comfortable electrical impulse within a wearable low profile orthosis that stimulate the nerves in the arm or leg, resulting in muscle movement that may not have been possible without the devices. Yimara Hernandez, 41 is a young woman from Hialeah that suffered a traumatic brain injury and has been using the Bioness devices for about a year. Prior to use of the leg device she was unable to stand or walk by herself. She reports, “I found my balance at Memorial and can now walk around my home with a cane”. She was also able to use the most advanced dynamic gait and safety system on the market in therapy. The Bioness Vector system provides a harness for the user and allows them to perform dynamic walking activities without the fear of falling while walking under a motorized trolley on a track imbedded in the ceiling. Memorial Regional South is the only facility in the area with the system and was the first rehab hospital in the state of Florida to offer this technology as a therapy treatment option. Check out www.Bioness.com for more information, or call to be scheduled for a free evaluation of the Bioness devices in the Ft Lauderdale area: 855-BIONESS.

moderate income area for almost twelve years, and I have seen the damage it has done to families. People can't vote, can't get a job. There is a litany of problems that go with this," said Commissioner Beam Furr, a former Hollywood Commissioner. "Being able to do a drug intervention or a drug education program I think would actually be a good part to this too." Commissioners directed the County Attorney to draft an ordinance that would decrease the penalty for misdemeanor marijuana possession, but raised questions that included the number of times a person could receive a civil citation, how many grams would be permissible, how cities would be affected by any new laws, and what costs may be involved.
