FRANKLIN MEJIAS CASTELLANO: OVERCOMING THE SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE BY COURTNEY BUTTERWORTH

TEEN CORRESPONDENT

courtney.butterworth@aquinas-sta.org

There are many everyday things that most people take for granted, like walking, running, and writing. But what would happen if we lost our hands and feet? Simple tasks like those would suddenly seem impossible. When I first saw Franklin Mejias Castellano, I was at the Hollywood Y, not too excited about having to work out after a long day. As I was on my way to a treadmill, I noticed that there was a boy playing ping-pong extremely well. It was only after Franklin stepped away from the ping-pong table that I noticed something else: he had no hands or feet. Franklin has taken the seemingly impossible and made it possible. Franklin and his family came to Florida from Venezuela when he was just twelve years old. The family planned to travel on from where they were staying to Orlando to go to Disney World when Franklin became very sick from a bacterial infection. His conditioned worsened until doctors had no choice but to amputate Franklin’s hands and feet. According to Franklin’s father, also named Franklin Mejia, doctors gave Franklin 48 hours to live, yet five

years later there is nothing he cannot do. Franklin spent over six months at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, and him and his father are extremely grateful for everything that the medical staff was able to do. “I love that hospital, my bad moments, my best moments, [they] were in that hospital.” said Mr. Mejias. 4

JUNE 2015

One night at Joe DiMaggio, was particularly bad for Mr. Mejias. “ [Franklin] was really sick, I was crying; the nurse said that I had to go because he was really sick. I turned around and all the medical staff was with him. I was sad and I said that I needed to talk with God. I went into a quiet room and was crying and screaming to God. I feel God with me and he said, “stand up, don’t cry anymore, sit down, your son is going to be alright”. I felt God with me. After one hour, I went back to the room and [Franklin] was great, and there was no more bad news.” Now flash forward to today. Although Franklin no longer is staying in the hospital 24/7, his daily life is anything but simple. Every fifty days he has to go to the doctor to get his blood tested. Even Franklin’s daily schedule had to change: he has to take antibiotics daily and be very careful of bacteria due to his immunodeficiency. However, none of this seems to stop Franklin. Instead of asking for help for himself, he instead wants to help others. Franklin’s foundation, Angeles Guerreros USA Foundation, works to help others going through difficult situations. He is now a freshman at South Broward High School and wants to be a civil engineer and a motivational speaker. Of the latter, he has already started his career by speaking at events. Franklin wants to start meetings for young people, kids and teenagers. “Some people worry about little things, I want to change that. I don’t have hands and feet and I am happy.” said Franklin. And he isn’t shy about telling others his story, when asked how he feels when people come up to him and ask about his story, he responded: “I feel proud, I feel proud of me and about my story.” In many ways, Franklin is a normal teenager. He likes to run and play soccer. His favorite sport is baseball and he enjoys cheering on the Miami Marlins. Franklin likes going to the Hollywood Y, where he can play ping-pong and basketball, among other things. Franklin enjoys going to Young Circle and to the beach, and just recently got to ride a jet ski. Franklin’s

incredible drive and attitude is what sets him apart from others. Not only has he been able to persevere through the seemingly impossible, but he has also been able to excel at things that people with hands and feet struggle to do. And Franklin does everything with a cheerful smile on his face, eager to help others whenever he can. He and his father urge those that need help to seek it through their charity. The Angeles Guerreros USA Foundation is currently providing aid to two people, one of whom is a girl from Venezuela who received a plane ticket to come to the United States courtesy of the charity. Franklin and Mr. Mejias also work with a corporation based in Orlando that provides free prosthetics to people who need them. Overall, they both want to help others in any way that they can. Many people trudge into a gym on a daily basis, not too excited about having to exercise; yet, Franklin, a young boy with no hands or feet, happily walks in. So, the next time you find yourself stressed or overwhelmed, think about Franklin and his outlook: he shows people everywhere how to overcome difficult times and smile through the struggle. He is truly a role model to anyone, anywhere; he shows

that by focusing on the positive, any person can accomplish anything, even the seemingly impossible. For more information on the Angeles Guerreros Foundation USA Foundation, you can go to their website: www. AGUSAF.org. You can also follow them on YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter, at @ agusafoundation. They are also on Facebook as Angeles Guerreros USA Foundation.

Young entrepreneur changing the landscape of Downtown Hollywood with urban gardens

Residential property owner and tenants creating organic vegetable gardens to instill pride BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Canadian entrepreneur Chaz Desousa will be changing the landscape of Downtown Hollywood – figuratively and literally – with the upcoming installation of organic vegetable gardens at his three rental properties designed to encourage tenant pride and longevity. Desousa, 30, and his fiancée Vanessa Tobin, 32, the driving forces behind the Roots Project, represent a new generation of creative and dynamic young transplanted Canadians who are making an investment in the local community. Desousa has already

made his mark as an entrepreneur in the couple’s native Montreal, where he owns a breakfast restaurant, food truck, day-care center and unique vintage-style laundromat that shares space with a café. About five years ago, Desousa started investing in residential rental property in Hollywood. He currently owns some 30 units – including apartments, efficiencies and cottages – on Coolidge, McKinley and Monroe streets in Downtown Hollywood, as well as the Beach House, a 2,000-squarefoot vacation rental house on Georgia Street on Hollywood Beach. Desousa said two of the downtown properties were eyesores that “weren’t doing very much for the community.” He kicked out unsavory inhabitants, cleaned up the property and attracted more desirable longterm tenants. Desousa observed a strong sense of community and a sharing of resources among his tenants. “They share what they cook and soon they also can share what they grow,” he said. Starting in June, Desousa and Tobin will be working hand in hand with tenants planting the square foot gardens,

a method that divides the growing area into small square sections that encourage experimentation with different plants and features raised beds. Tobin said the response from residents has been strong. The goal is to “create a happy environment for our tenants, to make people feel safe and make people feel proud of their property and where they live,” she said. “This is a wonderful example of creative and responsible multifamily property owners helping tenants to literally plant their roots in Downtown Hollywood,” said Lisa Liotta, Redevelopment and Operations Manager for the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The project also will provide health benefits to those who get exercise working in the gardens and enjoy their nutritious organic rewards, Desousa said. Initially, every interested tenant will have a raised bed to tend to, with additional beds and perhaps even a community garden among the future plans. “We’re going to see where it takes us,” Desousa said. He learned about horticulture from his grandfather, who worked at the Montreal Botanical Garden for 30 years, while Tobin has hands-on experience helping a friend open an urban garden company. Area resources include the Master Gardener Program offered through the University of Florida - Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) Extension Office in Broward County and facilitated by Dr. John Pipoly. Master Gardeners are trained volunteers who educate the public on solutions to their landscape, water, plant nutrition and pest problems. Consulting on the Roots Project is Ian Wolinsky, a Master Gardener and program director at the non-profit Urban Farming Institute, which helps and educates people on how to grow their own food. “Urban farming will be the solution to the world’s food crisis and soon will become mainstream with the rise in populations and the demise in farmland for production,” Wolinsky said. “Urban planners need to embrace farming as a viable ‘green’ option as we look to build our future cities and infrastructure, and in his development’s planning, Chaz is doing just this.” Desousa stressed the Roots Project’s “eco-friendly footprint,” with a recycle/ repurpose emphasis that includes mulch donated by the Asplundh Tree Expert Co. and wood pallets donated by a local lumber company for the raised garden beds, as well as a watering system that will utilize rain catchers installed on the residential buildings’ gutter systems.

Tobin said she and Desousa did a good bit of looking around before deciding to make a long-term investment in Hollywood, where the couple also plans to relocate from their current home in North Miami. “All roads lead to Hollywood. Every time we go anywhere else, we end up back here,” Tobin said. “Hollywood has a charm to it and it also has a lot of potential.”

Rudy’s Pub & Restaurant We are all V.I.P. members to an exclusive oasis found tucked away in the inter-coastal neighborhood of Hollywood Lakes that brings a community together over tasty cocktails, mouth-watering dishes, and scrumptious desserts. This well-kept secret is out, Rudy’s Pub & Restaurant at Hollywood Beach Golf Resort (HBGR) overlooks a majestic pond on the 17th hole of the greens. I sat down with restaurateurs Joel and Stacey Rudy where we got intimate about running one of the most successful and exclusive restaurants in the city limits. I invite you to discover what makes Rudy’s Pub & Restaurant top this month's list of “Aitch’s F-ing Good Eats.” A 3-dimensional dining review highlighting the Food, Fun, and the often overlooked higher calling of Fellowship of Hollywood's best restaurants.

At Rudy’s the ambiance is reminiscent of Old Florida; just imagine yourself sitting out on a veranda in the Keys but just here in Broward County. The chef offers a Florida fusion menu that doesn’t go overboard with items that read like a sloppy novel but has created a balance of selections at different price points to please both your palette and your pocket. “We offer everything from grilled cheese sandwiches to Prime Rib dinners. Rudy’s is sure to have something for everyone,” Stacey affirms. Jackpot! What I discovered is that if you order a $30 dollar plate or a $15 dollar dish or even an appetizer as a small meal for $5 dollars during happy hour, you are equally satisfied. the food is top-notch and the prices are reasonable.” I really like how the menu is clean and offers appetizers that can double as small meals. This summer, Rudy’s is offering a fresh assortment of salads and refreshing drinks like Watermelon Margaritas and Cucumber Gin Martinis (gin is 'in'-- vodka is so ‘05.) Amazing portion sizes-- it’s portions. killer, because you leave feeling you’ve gotten your money's worth. Then there is “Prime Rib - Friday” and “Baby Back Ribs - Saturday” all I will say is “call in your order ahead” when you're on the way because there is nothing worse than your “table neighbors” ordering the last one in the Finally, house.

In the attached Banquet Hall, Stacey and Joel inspire to orchestrate “an affair to remember.” Stacey explains, "I meet with each client and take the time to really listen to their needs. I then work with our Chef to come up with creations. No event is black or white. We have a beautiful banquet facility that seats up to 120 guests and offers a warm, yet sophisticated setting for any party or event that overlooks the lake and fountain near the 17th fairway. You just can’t beat the view.” Having a resturant situated on a golf course in a country club has also hurt them at times because many local residents think Rudy's is private and that they can only come in if they’re members. "We can’t stress to people enough that we’re open to the public for lunch and dinner and we’re a Hollywood Lakes hidden gem with plenty of free and convenient parking.”

Fellowship

You get to meet new interesting people and important pillars of the community, state, and nation. Stacey and Joel Rudy are grateful that the “community has been so supportive, from the golfers to the Hollywood residents to our local groups and organizations. Everyone has been wonderful and their support means so much to us. We live in the Lakes area and can’t imagine being anywhere but in this location." Of course, for Father’s Day Rudy's will be offering some burger and beer specials that compliment all of the golfing activities planned for the biggest VIP in your life Dad. I hope to see you there because Rudy’s offers great food and drinks in a comfortable atmosphere with a beautiful view….and by the way, it’s right in our own backyard!

Hi! I’m Howard Carter, III but my close friends and family call me Aitch (pronounced “H”), a self-proclaimed foodie after a serendipitous chain of events has allowed me to travel the world of over 40+ countries and eat the finest culinary offerings to the humblest of street markets in the far reaches of the globe. My passion for food initially began in my freshman year in college when I realised how I missed my mother's homemade fares and the overwhelming presence of pre-packaged foods. I learned a great deal from a fraternity brother who grew up in the kitchen of his Italian family’s restaurant that really taught me culinary ethos. From there I have traveled the world enjoying food and the artistic expression of the dining experience and the spirit of community that brings people together to partake in a primal need for survival that can be made into a celebration. Now, through Hollywood Gazette, I will uncover great eats for you inspired by the definition of an aperitif: A small dish or drink offered before a meal to open up your appetite. “Aitch’s F-ing Good Eats” aims to offer a 3-dimensional dining experience of enjoying Food, Fun, and the often overlooked higher calling of Fellowship. Please join me each month in the pages of Hollywood Gazette for “Aitch the Aperitif.” Who’s Next? For inquires to participate, please call me directly at 954-224-4613 or email h@hollywoodgazette.com

HOLLYWOOD RESIDENT JOSEPHINE VIOLA TURNS 100

Dancing has been a passion for CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Josephine Viola since she was 13. She only recently gave up dancing, at age 95 and will turn 100 on July 9. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Viola spent her working life in the garment industry. She worked for three different factories, mostly pressing dresses. “The work was hot because of the steam but I made good money. And I worked alongside men,” she said. She completed the eighth grade and attended one year of business school. Viola would joke that she went straight from the eighth grade to college. As a centennarian, Viola has seen a lot of life's ups and downs. “I remember the depression and many people had no food. My father had a business so we were alright. And he would help people who needed it,” she said. Viola married Anthony who worked for General Motors during World War II making airplane parts and later in life tended bar. He is deceased. They had three children, Marilyn, Darlene, and Frank. Josephine lives with her daughter Marilyn in Hollywood. She now has five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Frank lives in Pennsylvania. Much of life was fun for Viola because of her love of dance and good times. “I would go to the Roseland and Copa Cabana ballrooms in New York and dance. I loved ballroom dancing and so did my husband. People loved to watch him dance. We really knew how to dance,” said Viola. And she can remember adjusting to her children’s generation. Viola did not enjoy listening to Beatles music and greatly prefers ballroom dancing to the dancing that younger people enjoy. Her daughters remember growing up in a traditional household. “I remember her singing in the morning. On Sundays we would always have pasta and I remember her making the sauce,” said BY DAVID VOLZ

Darlene became a hairdresser and first worked in New York and then Las Vegas, before settling down in Hallandale. Viola has lived in Hollywood since 1979, and continued her passion for dancing. On many nights, Viola would go to dances at the Hollywood Bandshell and at local clubs that offering dancing and social events. She attended the Nativity Church and would enjoy card games with friends. Viola gave up driving in 1959 and become comfortable getting around on a bus and walking. “I would walk two or three miles to get somewhere,” she said. And at 100, Viola does not look and act like an elderly woman. She still loves to play cards and other games. While she has suffered some hearing loss, she is an engaging person to have a conversation with. Viola loves to read. Family and friends are planning a big party for Viola on July 11 at Tropical Acres. People will be coming in from all over the celebrate.

HOLLYWOOD PASSES NEW REGULATIONS FOR MASSAGE PARLORS Concerns about human CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com trafficking and other problems have led the City of Hollywood to scrutinize the various massage parlors operating in Hollywood. Andria Wingett, assistant director for the Hollywood Planning and Development services gave a presentation on the problem of massage parlors asserting they are really places of prostitution. Wingett told the Commission that massage parlors have been known as places for the “oldest profession.” She said that Florida is the third state for the most human trafficking behind Texas and California. The Commission and members of the public were shown a video describing the problems of human trafficking and how many individuals and families suffer because of it. There are more than 30 massage parlors in operation in Hollywood. BY DAVID VOLZ

Mayor Peter Bober said that there had been a problem of pain clinics and now there was a problem involving more massage parlors. Bober said this is a problem that needs to be addressed by the City. The Commission passed an ordinance on first reading that would place new rules on massage parlors. There will be a minimum distance of 2,500 feet between massage parlors. Under the new regulations, massage therapists will have to post their state and local licenses including their names and photos in an area that everyone can see in their place of business. Existing massage parlors will not have to follow the new distance regulations and licensed health care clinics and hotels with at least 75 rooms will be exempt from the new rules. There will be a final vote on this ordinance in June.

PHOTO BY COURTNEY STUDIOS Casey Colliflower and Kristin Ward met as freshman at the University of South Florida. They lived on the same floor, and began crushing each other with trips to the on-campus Chik-Fil-A and undergraduate pre-req classes. "Life and school were great for both of us! Through the ups and downs; the highs and the lows; we've grown together to create an unbreakable bond of love and friendship," said Casey. Hollywood has always been home for Casey, while Kristin is originally from Lake Mary, Florida. She's evolving into a world-class educator at Hollywood Academy of Arts and Sciences, while Casey's career grows at Fontainebleau Miami Beach. They are the proud parents of a French Bulldog named Louie, who loves nothing more than a stroll through downtown Hollywood and ArtsPark.
