City Considers Pushing General Obligation Bond Vote to March 2019 Special Election More time is needed on the Hollywood General Obligation Bond (GO). That is the message that was presented to the Commission during a recent meeting. Gus Zambrano, assistant city manager for sustainable development told the commission to allow for project refinement and voter education. He recommended that the GO bond be presented to voters during a March 2019 election rather than the November 2018 election. It would cost the city additional money to hold a special election, but this would give city staff and leaders more opportunity to educate city residents on the value of a bond. Zambrano said that the timing for a bond will be good in March because economic conditions are good and there is strong job growth. A major concern is voter fatigue. Zambrano and other city leaders are concerned that because the November ballot is so long and that Broward County and the public school district will likely be asking for money tax money, Hollywood voters might not be interested in approving even more taxes. Also, some residents are not sure what exactly the bond might pay for. About 93 percent of city voters want to know how the money will be spent. With more time, city leaders could work with residents and neighborhood leaders to address specific needs in various city communities. There would be an education campaign on the benefits of a bond. Projects would be more clearly defined. Also, more time could BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT dtv@gate.net

be given toward educating the public about the benefits of a bond. One major item the City wants is a new police headquarters building. Police officials consider the current building to be outdated, not up to code, unable to accommodate current technology and unable to withstand a major hurricane. A new building would address these problems. An option that was presented to the commission involved placing the new police building on the current site but shifting it a little bit east and placing a parking garage to the south of the structure. Another option would be to place the building at David Park where tennis courts are now located. The tennis courts would then be moved to Orangebrook. There was some discussion on the bond and Orangebrook Golf Course. A number of residents have said they want improvements to the 36 hole course. They believe it is important to preserve a large area of green space and that this area is important to hold flood water. They want a championship level course for serious golfers and maybe big tournaments and a Par 3 course for recreational golfers. Residents have said an improved course and additional hotel facilities will likely earn profits for the city. A study on the redevelopment of this course is taking place. If the bond is approved, a steering committee to oversee the bond would be formed. This committee would supervise the implementation of bond projects and ensure that the money is spent properly. The committee would be made up of Hollywood residents and individuals with professional backgrounds.

Commission Holds Workshop to Address Margaritaville Sale Controversy The Hollywood Commission held a workshop on the morning of May 30 to discuss concerns and provide some clarity about the sale of the Margaritaville Resort in April 2018 to KSL Capital Partners. “We have before us a very unique situation and a very complex deal that was negotiated over many years in a series of agreements with multiple administrations as well as a number of mayors and commission members that began a better part of a decade ago,” opened Hollywood City Manager Dr. Wazir Ishmael. “Hollywood Beach specifically and the city, in general, has done incredibly well since the opening of Margaritaville,” adding that he is not minimizing concerns the public has about the nature of the complex business deal. “As fiduciary agents of the city, we are required to make sure that the public has a clear understanding of BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT dtv@gate.net

the project from it’s inception to the completion.” Construction on the project, located on City-owned land leased by the development group, began in July 2013 and was completed in October 2015. The project received final approval from the City Commission (which also serves as the CRA Board) at a special joint meeting held on May 29, 2013. During this meeting, the Commission approved an Amended and Restated Ground Lease and an Amended and Restated CRA Compensated Funding Agreement that included the addition of the investment group, Starwood Capital into the project.
At the workshop, City officials mentioned when the deal between the developers and the city was being created, the Great Recession was taking place and it was difficult for Hollywood and developers to get financing and credit for major projects. The point was made that in retrospect, perhaps you could say the city could have gotten a better deal but under the circumstances at that particular time and place, it was probably the best deal possible. Mayor Josh Levy spoke favorably about the Margaritaville and believes it will generate billions for Hollywood. He believes it benefits the city in many ways including providing a first class resort for the city. “The acquisition of Margaritaville, and the strong sales price that it commanded reflects the continuing success of Hollywood Beach as one of the top-10 beach destinations in the country. The hotel’s initial investment group did very well with their investment, and as a city, we will continue to benefit from the millions of dollars per year that the hotel pays to us in annual rent and taxes,” said Levy. “The hotel is leasing the land from the City, and under the terms of the lease, the better the hotel does, the more participation rent the City earns, above and beyond the base rent. We (Hollywood’s taxpayers) are in a long-term public-private partnership with Margaritaville, and every one of us should want for the hotel to be as successful as it can be for many years to come.” Commissioner Peter Hernandez spoke bitterly against the resort in particular and the CRA in general. He believes the city is taken advantage of and lost money in the deal.
While she acknowledges that Margaritaville is a positive for the city, Commissioner Traci Callari was also disappointed and believes the Commission was not provided adequate information. At the meeting, she made requests for additional information about the 5% transaction rent issue that some feel the city is entitled to as well as additional financial details. She believes the commission was misled to believe the city was lending money to the developer to repay the city when it was actually a grant. “At the end of the day, the city is benefiting from having Margaritaville here. We are progressing as a city. We are moving forward. It’s how we got here that is the problem.” Kevin Beiderman wrapped up his comments by saying, “I think that residents that didn’t like the Margaritaville deal, residents that want to have a beach the way it was, are still not gonna like the Margaritaville deal. Regardless of if they paid $30 million a year in lease payments to the city and it reduced their taxes.” Commissioner Dick Blattner followed, “It’s really easy for me to be a cheerleader for this project because all the numbers look great,” he said concluding, “It is time to stop bashing the CRA. It is time to stop bashing the CRA director and staff and to compliment them on a great job that they’ve done to make Hollywood Beach the beach that everyone says is spectacular.” Shortly after the scrutiny of the sale began in April, Mayor Josh Levy strongly encouraged residents to support and enjoy the resort. “Jimmy Buffet is quoted as saying, “I don’t get tired of playing ‘Margaritaville’. It’s paid my bills for years.” Well, it’s now the same for us. We’re in,” said Levy. “Let’s enjoy the amenity, enjoy the revenue, enjoy the hundreds of jobs created, enjoy the improvements stimulated by the hotel upon its surrounding properties, and enjoy the live music that the hotel runs for us at the beach bandshell five nights a week. The hotel is a win, let’s be proud of our public investment and enjoy it.” Check hollywoodgazette.com for updates to this story.

farewell, hollywood Kent Wallace's 'B-Scene'
BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT I’m hitting the road folks… I’ll be leaving the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood in June and I wanted to take this opportunity to say farewell. The Philippines is my destination— don’t ask why. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my stay here in Hollywood. I’ll miss the Broadwalk. I’ll miss Saturday puffs with Mr. Kelly at the Octopus; I’ll miss my crew at the 92 (American Legion), and Nancy and the gals at G’s… Thank you Cindy Podgorski for companionship and adventure—you’ll be missed most of all (even Dorothy had a favorite)… Fred Salaff made it possible for me to be here in the first place, while my best bud Jeffrey Langer made it possible for me to stay. Mary Mathis and Don Bezahler, you padded my pillow and I cherish you both. Must mention the CRA (especially Lisa Liotta), the Hollywood Gazette, Cahoots (among other angels). I’ve hosted some stellar Pop-Up Art Extravaganza’s (with the help of myriad artists, venues and sponsors). I hope someone will pick up the gauntlet! I’m sure I ruffled some feathers, but

Broward voters will decide on penny sales tax to fund transportation-related projects The Broward Commission will REPORTER dtv@gate.net hold a public hearing on June 5 to finalize ballot language on the penny sales tax. Voters will have an opportunity to vote on penny sales tax increase in November. This will increase the sales tax from six cents to seven cents. The increase would not affect groceries and prescription medicine, but it would affect retail purchases and restaurant purchases. If voters approve the sales tax increase, it will pay for 586 transportationrelated projects. This would include a wide variety of road, traffic projects, signal technology, safety, greenways, overpass and intersection-related projects. Work will be done on bridges and the transit system. A major area of improvement will include more buses and more buses geared to serve neighborhoods. This will make it possible for people to use trains, and countywide buses and then get on community buses that will take them or pick them up closer to their homes. “We want to have enhanced local bus service, improved frequency, additional routes, longer service spans and improved coach conditions,” said Gretchen Cassini, assistant Broward County administrator. “We will expand BY DAVID VOLZ
rapid transit and express service and we're proposing to fully fund the community bus program.” Another important goal is to expand the paratransit bus service. County
leaders have seen a large increase in the number of people over age 60 in coming years and they will need buses that are equipped for people with disabilities. “People say they don’t take the bus now,
but as they get older, they will need buses. We want to be prepared to have buses for them,” said Cassini. “We have support from the public for more public transportation.”

Hollywood, Fl. native racks up big screen credits in Hollywood, Ca. including parts in GLOW and Black Panther BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
When she was growing up in Hollywood, Florida, Sydelle Noel never planned on being an actress. After graduation from a magnet program in Language (“in Latin!”) at Hallandale High School, she attended the University of Georgia in Atlanta, where her talents in track and field earned her a full scholarship and she majored in sports marketing, graduating in 2005. She moved to California with the intention of becoming a track and field star and eventually competing in the Olympics. But an injury waylaid those plans and Noel, best known for her recent roles in Marvel’s Black Panther, and in the hit Netflix series “GLOW,” had to switch gears. “I was in L.A.," she recalled, “and I needed a new career. So I went to work at a casting agency, and I started to learn the business.” This segued into a successful career as an athletic model. She was mostly doing commercials for clients like Sports Authority, Nike, Adidas, and New Balance, when a friend suggested that she audition for a part that required her particular expertise
in track and field. “So my first acting job, on the show Private Practice,” she recounted, “was a whole episode about me -- well, my character!” And the next part of Sydelle Noel’s career was, pardon the pun, off and running. Black Panther -- the highest-grossing superhero film to date -- gave Marvel its biggest opening week ever, exceeding both The Avengers and Titanic. And it gave Noel her biggest film role to date -- that of Xoliswa [zol-EES-wah] — one of Wakanda’s royal guard of elite female fighters called the Dora Milaje. She will be seen in upcoming movies The Clearing starring opposite Aundrea Smith, Liam McIntyre and Steven Swadling; and Daughter of the Wolf starring opposite Gina Carano, Richard Dreyfuss and Brendan Fehr. “In Daughter of the Wolf I actually play a villain, and I have some amazing fight scenes!” she said. On television, Noel recurs as Special Agent of the FBI Samanda Watson on almost every episode of CW’s “Arrow” for season six and the upcoming season seven. But her biggest break so far has been the role of Cherry Bang on the Netflix se-
ries “GLOW”, starring opposite Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin and Marc Maron, and executive produced by Jenji Kohan, the creator of Orange Is The New Black. The series follows a group of misfits and unlikely friends in LA in the 1980’s as they reinvent themselves as the “The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.” She plays Cherry Bang, a former stuntwoman who becomes one of the wrestlers. The first season garnered acclaim from both critics and fans and resulted in a SAG Award nomination for “Best Ensemble.” “GLOW” is premiering its second season this month. Prior to this role, she’d guest starred on various shows but this one is the first series where she’s one of the regulars, one of the stars. “I love acting because you get to change, really become another person while you’re doing it,’ she declared. “It’s like every day is Halloween...and I LOVE Halloween!” Sydelle loves L.A. but misses her
beloved family, and her beloved Hollywood Beach. “SO MUCH,” she said. “My first experience on the beach in California I noticed that no one was in the water -- then I found out why. It’s freezing! In Florida, you’re in the water all day. In California, you’re on the sand, and just looking at the water.” She was last here last October for the Caribbean Carnival in Miami with her family, "a 48-hour party," she said, dressing up and dancing with her aunt and her mother, who lives in Pembroke Pines. And the beach. All her best childhood memories of Florida, she said, include the beach. “My family is Grenadian,” she explained. “We’re beach people. Every big holiday, we’d be out there, making big meals, BBQ, sunup to sundown.” She sighs. I can hear the smile through the phone. So what’s in the future for Sydelle Noel? Noel looks forward to the next big challenge, no surprise for a once future Olympian. And like any actor, to hopefully having her own leading role. And of course, to her next trip home, to what she knows, and we know, is the real Hollywood.
Ask the funeral director... What should I wear to a funeral?
When choosing what to wear to a funeral, consider clothing that shows respect for the loved one you are remembering. With this in mind, you can dress in appropriate funeral attire no matter the style of service, from a formal church gathering to a casual, beachside celebration. Wearing something or holding something that a person may have given to you, will have a special place in your heart that day and many days to follow.
What do I say to someone when there is a death?
It can be hard to know what to say to someone who is grieving. It’s easy to feel like there are no words that will truly offer solace, but simply saying, “I’m here for you,” or “I’m so sorry,” can be enough. If you’re more comfortable letting actions speak for you, you can convey your condolences by attending the funeral, sending a gift or taking a meal to the family A hug can say it all.

At 97, Elsie Johns aka 'Miss J' is still the talk of the town BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com
hey call me Miss J,” said the beautiful birthday girl, as she prepared to blow out the candles on her cake. “Miss Elsie sounds so old-fashioned.” And with a little help from her friends, her family, members of the Downtown Hollywood CRA, the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the Hollywood Historical Society and the Hollywood Women’s Club, neighboring merchants of her store, Melina’s on Hollywood Boulevard, local journalists and other Hollywood dignitaries, she blew them all out. At 97, Miss J, owner/operator of Melina’s, the oldest continually-operated family business on Hollywood Boulevard, still goes into the store almost every day, attends Chamber events, sees friends, is the longest-running member of the Chamber, and is a true jokester.

“I would go out every night if I could find someone to go with -- I don’t want to be a bar hopper, although I think it’s so interesting to see how people operate at night,” she said with a smile. Does she have a boyfriend? “I’ve had boyfriends, of course,” she confided, “and now, any man my age, I’d have to take care of! But I like merchandising and I like working and I thank God that he gives me the strength and the courage to go to work every day. That’s what I have to be thankful for...that I feel good and I feel like working and I have four limbs to go. “I couldn’t stand staying home -even if I had to go to a restaurant and wash dishes,” she continued. “I have to do something, to keep busy. If I didn’t have the business I would do something.“ Miss J lives in Downtown Hollywood in the same house she grew up in -- “I haven’t had money enough to move up,” she quipped -- and works in the building her father built when he moved his family to Hollywood from Western Nebraska
in the late ‘40s. Although it’s duly noted that she often makes her own hours. “If you want to see me, you may have to come to the store at midnight, I guess,” she said. It was the last years of the war when Matt Tomich, a successful farmer who actually came to Florida to retire, set about building the now historic building that houses the store named after his second wife, Elsie’s step-mother, Melina Tomich. Supplies were scarce and he had to call on friends in other states to send in kegs of nails and lumber along with other staples. “Hollywood was a slow southern town where people knew each other and were kind to each other,” recalled Elsie, “full of nice people, mostly adults who came here to retire. It was small, and Cont. on page 29
CONT. FROM PAGE 27 close to Miami, if you wanted the big time." Melina’s started out carrying girls and some women’s clothing and underwear, and Elsie started working with Melina. “I didn’t plan to -- it just fell on me, there wasn’t anything else,” said Miss J of the job choice that ended up being her life’s career. But how did it go from children’s clothes to the somewhat racy ladies undergarments often on display in Melina’s windows? “First it was children’s underwear, shirts, and shorts. We always carried some lingerie, and over the years, we just ordered what people wanted and it naturally materialized. “Things were slow, winter was slow and summer was slower,” she laughed, as though that explained it all. Her daughter, Hollywood resident Penny Johns, concurred. “It actually was sort of a natural progression,” Penny agreed. “They always had lingerie, and they said, ‘Hey, let’s try some of these!’ And it worked, so they continued. There were no big department stores nearby then, so people began coming to them for that type of merchandise.” “I don’t think it’s any sexier than others,” said Elsie. “Though I hope it’s sexier than Walmart!” Entering Melina’s feels like crossing into a slower, simpler time. From the inside looking out, you can see only Anniversary Park and lots of trees, imagining the days before traffic clogged the streets. And the store itself hasn’t had many changes inside save one paint job about 15 years ago. Each of the family members took a color and worked in tandem to refresh the walls with the bold jewel tones that remain today, along with the original shelves, carpets and many of the vintage displays. Miss J says business is slow in summer, like in most Florida businesses, but that she continues to get a lot of new and different customers. She said that she misses the old days of Hollywood, but enjoys the new families and businesses and especially all the nice new private restaurants that have come to town. “Of course, I think all food is good, and when you’re hungry, you’re hungry!” she quipped. She says there’s "no comparison" between Hollywood old and new. “Well,” she mused, “l think change is inevitable, in every place that grows. So we have to accept it, stay with it and try to improve. Today, everything is all in a
rush. Everybody’s always for 'me,' never mind helping fellow man. We have to help people and teach them to be kind and good and it comes back to everyone two-fold. That’s what works for me. It’s what you feel warm with.” She has always done and continues to do, a lot of volunteer work, with clubs such as the Navy League, two art museums, and the Salvation Army, where she has been a member of the Executive Board for many decades. She’s the oldest active member of the Hollywood Chamber, where her mother preceded her, and she boasts that “after 50 years, I don’t pay membership anymore!” Clearly keeping active is key in keeping Miss J so vital. “You have to keep busy,” she believes. “I think it stems from
your youth. Take vitamins, eat good food, not too much liquor or beer drinking. And a lot of it is placement of your mind, if you have good parents that teach you good things. But mostly, what keeps her going is surrounding herself with family, friends and meeting new people every day. “Don’t be afraid to talk to people. We’re all just human, you know.” And that’s her advice to young people, those just starting out and really, anyone younger than herself. “Get out and meet people as much as you can. Boys, girls and old people too. Have conversations. And travel. I’ve been around the world twice. There are not many places I haven’t been, just a few I’ve missed. I’ve been to South Africa. To way
up north to kiss the reindeer above Sweden and Norway, and down to the snow in Antarctica. There’s no place I’ve been that I haven’t liked." “Do it. Charge that old charge card, pay it when you get old, but you can’t travel when you’re old and crippled and no longer interested. Travel now and pay later. There’s plenty to see and do. Get it together and go. It’s important in so many ways.” The doorbell rings and the birthday cake gets wheeled in. It’s time to take some pictures before the party starts. Miss J rises and asks coquettishly, “Do you want me with my hat?" Absolutely. And let the festivities begin.

Hollywood Native Brings "LA Vibe" to Downtown District with LA Media Group BY CARON CONWAY CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
LA Media Group, a full-service digital media agency that combines video, social and digital marketing into a single package, recently relocated from Los Angeles to Downtown Hollywood, bringing with it an "LA vibe." LA Media Group strives to make social media and digital marketing affordable for all business owners, including owners of small businesses. They offer six- and 12-month subscription packages that provide clients with social media management, digital content production and brand management. Services include company and product videos, social media video ad campaigns, monthly social media reports, photography, logo animation and graphic design. The full-service
state-of-the-art film studio offers ongoing, on-demand video content at no additional cost. "We are the only agency that offers a monthly subscription package for high-quality video content, social media management and digital brand management," said LA Media CEO and president Leeron Cohen, who founded the business in Los Angeles a year ago before returning to Hollywood, where he grew up. "We're like a one-stop shop for everything our clients need." Cohen opened LA Media Group April 16 at 2115 Hollywood Blvd. with Arthur Polsky, a friend since childhood who serves as the company's COO and in-house legal counsel. LA Media Group has introduced an "LA vibe" to Downtown Hollywood with its welcoming and fun workplace and young, smart, friendly entrepreneurs. "You can even stop by to have a coffee and hang by the pool table and
decompress," Cohen said. "Our new home will always be open to our clients for whatever they need." In addition to building brands, building relationships with clients – and among them – is a top priority. "We plan to hold monthly mixers for our clients," Cohen said. "We're in the business of helping business." He came up with his business concept while working in LA for a worldwide viral video company. "I spent my nights wondering how I could create something that could impact the future of social media," Cohen recalled. He realized the best way to help brands find their voice was through video. "There isn't a day that goes by that you and everyone you know isn't scrolling through their social media accounts, just waiting to see your targeted content," Cohen said. "There are people literally waiting for your video to show
up." He scouted locations in MiamiDade and Broward counties before deciding on his hometown, which he calls "the epicenter of all avenues" because of its convenient central position. "The beauty of Downtown Hollywood is that we saw the potential of it growing," Cohen added. "You're starting to see a new evolution of businesses by young, smart entrepreneurs open." The historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district is already undergoing a transformation with the recent opening of modern, hip new businesses. "We're hoping to be the trendsetters in the city," Cohen said. LA Media Group is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Downtown Hollywood Aesthetic Clinic Turns Back Time Without Surgery BY CARON CONWAY
Downtown Hollywood business owner Livia Manner combines her education and experience as a skilled medical professional, artistic ability and eye for beauty into her new aesthetic clinic, Aesthetic Excellence Inc. by Livia Manner, ARNP. Aesthetic Excellence Inc., at 1940 Harrison St., Suite 308, serves clients who want to turn back time without going under the knife. Manner, an advanced registered nurse practitioner who holds a master's degree in nursing, has a decade of experience as a medical aesthetic nurse practitioner. She opened her own clinic in mid-March with a reputation as one of South Florida's most respected aesthetic practitioners. What sets Manner apart from others who perform non-surgical aesthetic procedures are "my background, my years of experience and my talent," she said. "Each case is different, and many don't have an eye for beauty. I believe
in the natural look." And unlike providers who spend only a fraction of their time on nonsurgical procedures, "I am 100 percent dedicated to the aesthetic," said Manner, who counts celebrities, models and TV personalities among her international clientele and is an Esthetic Skin Institute (ESI) instructor. Procedures offered at Aesthetic Excellence Inc. include Botox and other injectable nerve-blocking products; dermal fillers; PDO thread lifting; platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy; liquid facelifts; microdermal needling; medical-grade chemical peels; carboxytherapy; facial vein treatment; sclerotherapy, or vein removal; mesotherapy; injectable medical-grade HCG diet; and natural hormone replacement. As an intensive critical care nurse for five years, Manner also has experience with uncommon complications – unlike many providers who are certified in CPR and other emergency procedures but have never actually
performed them. "My background in critical care makes my work safer," said Manner. She decided to open her clinic in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district because of the reasonable rent, her building's private garage and the central location that makes appointments convenient for her clients who live in Miami and Boca Raton. "And there are many good restaurants in Downtown Hollywood, so they can sit down and eat, take a walk, enjoy the day before heading back home," Manner said. Aesthetic Excellence Inc. by Livia Manner, ARNP is open by appointment from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There is no charge for a consultation. Manner also plans to start hosting educational events for her clients in the coming months. For more information, call 954-399-3229 or visit www. liviamannerarnp.com.

which the commission holds a regular meeting, a requirement to disclose when a commission member had knowledge of another commission member’s voting conflict of interest, to prohibit the city commission from making requests of city employees except for designees of the city manager or city attorney. There is also a proposed amendment to clarify that the sale or other disposition of a city-owned golf course must be approved by the city’s electors, subject to approval by the electorate at a referendum to be held on Nov. 6. Other items to be considered involve changes to the conduct of elections and referendums and matters involving the city manager and city attorney. Hollywood Commission votes to uphold the denial of vacation rental license The Hollywood Commission considered an appeal of the denial of a vacation rental license for a property located at 929 N. Southlake Drive during the May 16 meeting. A number of people who live near the home that was being used as a party house complained about the very loud parties that had taken place before the license was terminated. They brought pictures and told stories of huge crowds, loud events, lots of drugs and alcohol and other problems. A lawyer representing the owner asked that the commission grant the owner another chance. And managers representing the owner also spoke asking for another chance. The Commission spent little time considering the matter and voted to uphold the denial.
Hollywood Commission approves purchases The Hollywood Commission approved a number of major financial transactions during a recent meeting:
• To allow city leaders to accept an Areawide Council on Aging of Broward County grant in the amount of $228,000 to provide enhanced senior citizen recreation programs. • A contract with BLDM USA for construction services related to Lift Station A-5 upgrades located at 333 Briarwood Circle. The contract is for $780,000. To renew a purchase order with Craig Smith and Associates for locating and marking underground facilities for an estimated annual amount of $300,000. • An agreement with Reynolds Construction for the permanent emergency repairs to the 60-inch ocean outfall pipeline inside West Lake Village Community along West Lake Drive at Scarlet Oak Street, at Satinleaf Street and possibly at River Birch Street to be compensated on a time and material basis. • To allow city leaders to approve blanket purchase orders with Calvin, Giordano & Associates and C.A.P. Government for inspection and plan review services in an estimated cumulative amount of $800,000. • To approve the purchase of a John Deere 9009a Terraincut Mower in the amount of $63,511.
Commission approves property sales
The Hollywood Commission approved a number of cityowned property sales during a meeting last month. • The sale of a property located at 7508 Grant Court to Sunrise Lake Homes in the amount of $269,900. • The sale of a property located at 901 N. 70th Terrace to Haydar Life Corporation in the amount of $178,000. • The sale of a property located at 1936 Garfield St. to Wales Village in the amount of $165,000. • The sale of a property
at 2131 Cleveland St. to Reef Properties in the amount of $144,900. • The Commission also approved an agreement with Hispanic Unity of Florida to provide housing counseling services in an amount not to exceed $20,563.
New work planned for the airport
There are big construction plans in the works at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Recently, a workshop was held to show and allow for discussion about upcoming construction plans. There will be major work done on the terminals. There will be $376 million spent on Terminal 1, $177 million spent on Terminal 2, $257 million spent on Terminal 3 and $649 million spent on Terminal 4. In the end, more gates will be built for airplanes. Another goal is to create a center so travelers could make easier connections to trains and the cruise ships at Port Everglades. Much of this will make the longer stays cruise passenger face before boarding flights for home more comfortable. They will have easier access to concourses with large selections of restaurants and other amenities, according to Greg Meyer, spokesperson for the airport. Blessings & Blossoms
By Kent Wallace
Many of you have heard me refer to the church I attend on most weekday mornings—Little Flower. I don’t wish to be a non secular rah-rah, nor do I wish to offend or pick favorites but I’m going to risk it all by introducing you to my personal place of worship. Little Flower has been part of the Hollywood landscape for a long time and its history is steeped in by-the-seat-of-yourpants devotion. Frankly, one of the things that attracted me instantly to the Hip Hamlet (beside the plethora of affordable, neighborhood bars) was the proximity of Little Flower to Casa di Taylor (my home). The walk to mass typically takes no more than seven-min-
utes—no car, no Uber nor Lyft required. When I lived in Mendocino, CA I could walk to St. Anthony’s (with Patterson’s Pub just down the road) and in New York, Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral Church (Little Italy) was but a stroll away from Milano’s Bar. Las Vegas didn’t provide such luxuries and my attendance fell off (church not bars). So coming to Hollywood provided me a reattachment to my preferred form of grounding. Without further ado, and taken from the pages of the Miami Archdiocese website, I give you the History of Little Flower Church. “When South Florida’s first “boom” had begun to reach its peak in 1924, Father Michael Mullaly arrived in Hollywood to start a new mission, Saint Anthony, for the growing Catholic population. He brought only a suitcase packed with his vestments, two candles, a wooden chalice, and a small silver statue of the then newly canonized saint, Therese of the Child Jesus, popularly called the Little Flower. Sundays, on an altar that consisted of a converted packing case, he placed the St. Therese statue and celebrated Mass for parishioners who sat on plank benches. The pioneering mission became known as Little Flower. Minnesota native Father Louis Buechler, who served the fledgling mission for more than three years, became its first pastor. Its Masses in 1925 were celebrated at the Ritz and Diane theaters until construction of a small church in 1927. Parishioners replaced the small church with the present Pierce Street structure in 1941 and opened a school in 1942.” As you can see, Little Flower has been abloom in the Hip Hamlet for some time now and she has inspired my pilgrimage…

HOUSEKEEPING WITH INTEGRITY
Researchers estimate that there are over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean, and that number continues to rise daily. In response to the proliferation of plastic pollution, Surfrider Broward Chapter has launched a program locally, and they already have three Hollywood restaurants on board. Billy’s Stone Crab Hollywood is the latest restaurant to join Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants Program. The Ocean Friendly Restaurant Program works with local businesses to combat plastic pollution at the sourcehelping restaurants reduce single-use plastics, conserve resources, and raise public awareness. “Clean oceans and sustainability helps make such a big difference in our city and sets the right tone for environmentally responsible daily practices,” said Elena Hershey, owner of Billy’s Stone Crab Hollywood. “Every little step in this direction is a huge contribution. We hope that more people and local businesses will see the need to jump on board with Ocean Friendly practices!”
They must also choose to abide by at least three of the following criteria:
Restaurants participating in the OFR Program must abide by the following four criteria: 1. Discontinue offering expanded polystyrene (aka Styrofoam.) 2. Follow proper recycling practices. 3. An eighty-seat bar dominates the space, surrounded by a state of the art sound system and over twenty large format, high-definition, mounted televisions. Their culinary approach, an “Elevated American comfort with a global twist,” celebrates vintage classics which are enhanced by Executive Chef Ryan Lithgow’s own flair and expertise. Their specialty cocktail menu? Skillfully created by Master Mixologist Jared Boller, evokes an authentic era of drive-ins, backyard barbeques, soda jerks and dairy bars. They warmly welcome you to experience the one and only Lucky Street Tavern and Grill, where anyone can celebrate the good times, or even get lucky!
