City Manager updates commission on budget BY BRETT DALY | brett@hollywoodgazette.com ASSOCIATE EDITOR

City Manager Cameron Benson recently submitted a Fiscal Year 2012 Budget Outlook to Mayor Peter Bober and City Commissioners, in which he stated that “business-as-usual is not conducive to reversing structural budget issues faced by the City’s General Fund” and estimated the initial budget gap for the FY2012 General Fund at $25 million. In the letter, City Manager Benson said the Benson local economy mirrors the national trend of depressed tax collections and high unemployment rates and said residual effects of the recession compounded by the 2007 adoption of the Florida Property Tax Reform Bills (Amendment 1) has led to massive budget gaps, a growth in expenses that outpaces revenues. “Fiscal stress has become the single motivating factor to veer from the perception of government as a

In addition, he highlighted ways Hollywood has already taken efforts to reduce spending.

Heart Gallery, local photographers find foster children ‘forever families’ BY BRETT DALY | brett@hollywoodgazette.com ASSOCIATE EDITOR

As Hollywood photographer Courtney Ortiz watched an 11-year-old foster child legally become the daughter of parents she desperately craved last summer, she felt an onslaught of emotions. She felt elated that Kassandra found a loving home, felt moved as she watched Tim and Heather Scott finally become the parents they always wanted to be, and felt humbled that a photograph she had taken of the girl led her to her “forever family.” Ortiz, along with 50 other local photographers, volunteers for the Heart Gallery, a traveling photography exhibit of foster children who are waiting for permanent adoption. The 501(c) (3) organization tells the story of these children, whose birth parents had their parental rights terminated by the courts, by sharing their photographs, as well as bio cards that describes each child’s interests and personality, with the public. The Heart Gallery travels to a different location every month, ranging from malls and chapels to city halls and hospitals, and in January, the Heart Gallery found a temporary home at Memorial Regional Hospital. “The Heart Gallery creates

photograph of a child who finds a permanent home to the adoption ceremony, which is how Ortiz witnessed one of her most “amazing experiences ever.” “As a parent, I know the happiness that parenthood brings and watching Tim and Heather get a family of their own made me feel a strong connection with them,” said Ortiz, a mother of two who began Courtney Ortiz (second from left) with Tim and Heather volunteering with the Heart Gallery in Scott on the day of Kassandra’s adoption ceremony. January 2008. “It was my photograph that awareness,” said Barbara Schechter, the brought Kassandra to them.” executive director of the Heart Gallery of Ortiz recalled how Kassandra had Broward County. “We are not only trying to wondered when she would find her forever find these children homes, but we are also family during her photo shoot, and Heather trying to raise awareness (about the foster Scott said the vibrancy of Ortiz’s photo of care system).” Kassandra really captured her personality Volunteer photographers take turns and attracted the couple to the child. It is an honor to be able to participate in this with a lot of other well-known and well-respected local photographers, and it’s really something that I look forward to.” Started in 2006 in Santa Fe, the Heart Gallery has grown to include more than 120 locations across the country. The Heart Gallery of Broward County works with local agencies like ChildNet – a nonprofit organization created to manage the child welfare system in Broward County – to match them with prospective adoptive parents. Since its inception four years ago, Schechter said the agency has finalized 60 adoptions and 25 foster children are currently matched, meaning the organization is no longer recruiting a family for them and is waiting for the finalization of the adoption process. She said around 75 children still need a home. “Everyone can do something to help a foster child,” Schechter said, adding that she is grateful for the many people who have already contributed their talents and services, especially the photographers. “Photographers are the backbone of the Heart Gallery. They are wonderful.” For more information, visit www. heartgalleryofbroward.org.

Centenarian photo exhibit on display until March 18 at Montecristo Lounge Montecristo Lounge recently kicked off the first in a series of monthly Art & Cigars exhibits featuring “ONE HUNDRED: Life at One Hundred and Beyond - a portrait of America’s centenarians.” The ONE HUNDRED collection features a black and white documentation of people 100 years old or older. Each person was photographed at his or her home, place of business, favorite golf course or doing whatever he or she enjoys. An array of practical and humorous anecdotes and quotes were collected from each person during individual interviews. This collection took about five years to complete. “I created this exhibit out of love for family and traditions,” said artist John Gillan. “My hope is for people to walk away with one thought: to call their grandparents and take them out to dinner.” The Lounge is located at 1928 Harrison St., Suite A. For more information contact Ana Cuenca at 866417-9454.

The exhibit will be on display at Monetecristo Lounge on Harrison Street until March 18 and can be viewed by appointment.

The event attracted new patrons to Downtown Hollywood who enhanced their evening by checking out the local restaurants. hollywood gazette | 954-962-8180 | www.hollywoodgazette.com

Hollywood streamlines city vehicle use BY BRETT DALY | brett@hollywoodgazette.com ASSOCIATE EDITOR

After a six-month study of Hollywood’s city vehicle use, assistant public works director Wade Sanders identified 116 vehicles not receiving adequate use by public employees. Instead of using the $2.4 million allotted for new vehicles from the City’s budget, Sanders initiated a carpool system using current fleet vehicles, saving the City money and helping the environment at the same time. A pilot carpool program launched in May 2010, after Sanders received approval from the City for the system last March, and it officially launched last July. Sanders said the new program works similarly to a car-rental system. City officials in need of a vehicle go online, reserve a car – entering the days and times needed – and also make sure they return it with the same amount of gas they took it out with. More than 250 City employees took a class to learn how to use the carpool program, he said. “The program is great, and it’s working,” Sanders said. “We’re getting the maximum use out of the vehicles. That’s the goal: to get the biggest bang for our buck. The best thing is that we control the fleet. It will give us the capacity to phase out old vehicles with new vehicles, and a lot of the vehicles used will get more mileage because we can do the proper maintenance on them since the size of the fleet has reduced.”

The City is selling vehicles not used in the carpool program (Sanders deemed vehicles not using more than 120 gallons of gas during the study as cars receiving inadequate use), and with the first 14 sold, the City made $13,000. Sanders said they kept newer vehicles for the program and will sell older, high-mileage vehicles. They have 46 left to sell. In addition to making the City money from the selling of old vehicles, the program will also save the City money on gas, Sanders said. Prior to the program, the vehicles in use consumed 85,000 gallons of gas in a month, but with the new system in place, the vehicles consumed 69,000 gallons in a month, a reduction Sanders said demonstrates the program’s immediate cost-saving effects. “This program allows the City, especially in these economic times, to really show that we can be creative with our budget and to show we are making restraints and tightening our belts,” Sanders said. Students experience a day of wheelchair-bound life campus, whose Occupational Therapy Assistant program takes a hands-on approach to educating students about the everyday challenges facing disabled individuals. Students take field trips to Sawgrass Mills Mall in Sunrise, where they spend a few hours in wheelchairs attempting to navigate the mega-mall’s food court, restrooms and stores, where they must also try on clothes. But CEC volunteer Jessica Williams and her fellow Keiser students in the program’s Neurological Disorders and Treatment Strategies class encountered a major obstacle even before getting into their wheelchairs. With 24 students in the class and only a handful of available chairs, the “disabled for a day” experience has been limited. The school program currently operates with three donated wheelchairs and relies on the mall’s rental fleet to make up the difference. On their last visit in February, students were able to rent only three of the mall’s wheelchairs, which it prefers to hold in reserve for actual disabled persons. “Every time we go, they give us a harder time about renting the wheelchairs,” said Williams, 20. Last month she approached McCrea, who managed to secure the third wheelchair for the program and is putting the word out in the community about the need for more.

BY CARON CONWAY LEAD CORRESPONDENT caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Hollywood activist Nadine McCrea has performed good deeds in her community since she and her family moved into their Washington Park neighborhood in 1982. And so, when she heard about a need for wheelchairs for a Florida college’s occupational therapy program, McCrea did what she always does: She added the project to her everMcCrea growing to-do list. As the founder of the not-for-profit Community Enhancement Collaboration, Inc. (CEC) in 2004, McCrea is well-aware of the needs of her community, and she’s adept at finding solutions. Bolstered by a 200-member volunteer force of mostly Hollywood residents, the CEC’s programs and events involve youths, seniors, community partners and faith-based leaders, and the organization’s outreach includes not only Washington Park and Greater Hollywood, but surrounding areas as well. The CEC’s newest community partner is Keiser University’s Pembroke Pines

“It’s a great learning experience to see what it really feels like to be wheelchair-bound forever,” said Williams, who wants to work with disabled children after receiving her Associate in Science degree in December and her occupational therapy certification. “I wish more people could go through it.” During her time in a wheelchair, Williams encountered sinks that were too high in handicap-designated restrooms, too-narrow doorways and inadequate fitting rooms. “I learned to appreciate the fact that I can walk a whole lot more,” she said. The hardest part of the experiment, however, was “dealing with the way people treat you,” Williams said. “People are so very, very inconsiderate.” The CEC will accept any functioning non-motorized wheelchair that includes both armrests and footrests. All donations to the CEC, a 501(c)(3) organization, are tax-deductible. This latest partnership with Keiser University illustrates the CEC’s commitment to listen and respond to area needs and “get whatever resources are needed,” McCrea said. The CEC provides a wide range of services to all ages—including community programs, events, social services, personal care and volunteer services, all tailored to meet clients’ needs—and assists nearly 7,500 children and their families each year

through outreach programs. When McCrea and her husband, Ulyses, first moved into Washington Park nearly 30 years ago, she had no idea their initial good deeds—taking three neighborhood girls under their wings who “needed some assistance, some guidance”—would evolve into a wide-reaching community agency. “It wasn’t just talk. We walked the walk,” said McCrea, whose contributions were recognized in 2007 with the City Citizen of the Year award from the Florida League of Cities and the Florida Recreation and Park Association’s Voluntary Service Award. While the boundaries of the CEC’s involvement have expanded over time, Washington Park remains its primary service area. With Community Development Block Grant funding from the City of Hollywood for local activities, the CEC last month moved into a 2,600-square-foot office space on State Road 7, and the City plans to build the first Washington Park Neighborhood Help Center on Wiley Street. Business Leaders In Action (BLIA) host breakfast to help homeless people in transition On Feb. 17, the Business Leaders in Action (BLIA) along with the City of Hollywood, the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) and Junior Chamber of Commerce (also known as Jaycees) hosted a breakfast to educate businesses on tax and financial incentives available to businesses that hire homeless people in transition. The breakfast emceed by Anne Hotte, Executive Director of the GHCC, featured Curt Nichols, VP of Human Resources for City Furniture, as a keynote speaker who shared his experience in hiring homeless people in transition. Nichols made the point that the retention percentage was even

better in his recruitment of homeless in transition and that the motivation to do well was a huge added benefit. His testimonial was seconded by Brian Bowdish, General Manager for Delaware North Companies, who claimed the same success rate in his hiring practice. Attendees then heard from a graduate of the Broward Outreach Center program who was hired by Delaware North and heard a presentation by Bonni Smith of Workforce One on some of the incentives programs available to businesses who are considering hiring homeless workers. Connecting the Business Community The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is bringing together the Hollywood business community. Each month, the chamber facilitates a meeting with representatives from the City, the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency), the Hollywood Beach Business Association (HBBA), the Downtown Hollywood Business Association (DHBA) and the Chamber to share pertinent information relating to business development, recruitment, local events and upcoming projects and initiatives. The sharing of information is part of a Chamber initiative to ensure consistency in the information available to businesses in Hollywood. To further this commitment,

the chamber now has designated ex-officio seats for the president of the HBBA (Debra Case) on its Board and Arline Hampton, with the Hollywood Business Development Department, and offers these representatives the opportunity to present to the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Informed members of the Board can in turn become better advocates and ambassadors to the City. Together we will ensure that businesses in Hollywood have a voice and are successful. Florida identified as second worst state for CO2 pollution New report shows biggest one-year increase in C02 pollution from U.S. power plants in 2010 Even as a fierce debate rages in Congress about whether to handcuff the ability of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to deal with coal-fired power plant pollution, a new report from the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) shows that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from power plants in the U.S. rose 5.56 percent in 2010 over the year before, the biggest annual increase since the EPA began tracking emissions in 1995. The report is based on data from the EPA’s “Clean Air Markets” website, which tallies emission reports from electric generators. Texas power plants led the

pack in 2010, with nearly 257 million ton of CO2 emissions, as much as the next two states combined (Florida and Ohio), and more than seven times the total CO2 emissions from power plants in California. EIP Director Eric Schaeffer commented, “The industry’s allies on Capitol Hill are working hard to turn back the clock by repealing environmental standards for coal plants that are already many years overdue. Congress may weaken or even eliminate EPA’s ability to stop coal plant pollution, and block further study of climate change. But even the most powerful legislature in the world is subject to the laws of science, and global warming will not disappear because our politicians choose to pretend that it does not exist.” Average global temperatures last year reached the 2005 level, the warmest year on record. CO2 is

E-Tech Caucus Formed to Focus on Jobs/Global Competitiveness Members of Congress, leaders from the computer and video game industry launched the “Congressional Caucus for Competitiveness in Entertainment Technology (E-Tech Caucus)” on Capitol Hill last month. “The E-Tech Caucus is about jobs and our competitiveness around the world,” said U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (TX-8), who also chairs the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Trade and is the Vice Chair-designate of the Joint Economic Committee. “This growing industry has generated more than 120,000 jobs in (more than) 34 states and is a major international player as well. It's time Congress took notice.” “The U.S. entertainment software industry is at the forefront of innovation and education, Wasserman turning what we have thought about video Schultz games on its head,” said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20), who is co-chairing the caucus with Congressman Brady. “We owe it to our children to explore how these technologies can help America continue to lead the world in innovation.” This growing sector of our economy contributes an estimated $24 billion in sales annually and employs computer programmers, graphic artists, writers, actors, business managers and audio engineers. With these high tech jobs generating an average salary of $89,000, American colleges and universities are offering degrees to meet the demand of this growing intellectual property sector. The caucus will also focus on the theft of intellectual property worldwide and how that affects U.S. jobs and competitiveness American companies in a global marketplace.

the most prevalent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming; the combustion of fossil fuels for electricity generation in the U.S. accounts for more than one third of our nation’s total U.S. releases of CO2, and about 5 percent of CO2 emissions worldwide. Coal-fired boilers provided 45 percent of U.S. electricity in 2010 but were responsible for 81 percent of total CO2 emissions from electricity generation last year. MUNICIPAL NEWS

City-wide Wi-Fi doesn’t happen for Hollywood BY BRETT DALY ASSOCIATE EDITOR brett@hollywoodgazette.com

Although Hollywood will not have city-wide Wi-Fi coverage like originally anticipated when entering into a contract with Johnson Controls, Inc. to outfit Hollywood with a wireless communications platform, the public will have access to three hotspots, and Hollywood will still see savings through other measures. The Hollywood City Commission approved a $13.9 million performance contract with Johnson Controls in January 2008 to install three

operational and energy efficiencies: automated water meter readers, multispace parking meters and citywide wireless access for police officers. The City entered into the performance contract with Johnson Controls – a company that strives to create more sustainable environments through its products and services for more than 200 million vehicles, 12 million homes and one million commercial buildings – to build on its initiative of using technology to enhance the efficiency and quality of municipal services. Measures like these have earned Hollywood the distinction of being named a top

10 digital city multiple times by the Center for Digital Government. The technology project measures are expected to save Hollywood $23 million over a 15-year period. “This project was a first for Johnson Controls,” said John Barletta, director of the Information Technology Department. “They were hoping this would be a pilot program they could use throughout the country.” But, Johnson Controls failed to deliver 100 percent Wi-Fi coverage that would have offered both the 2.4 frequency for users to enjoy outdoor internet access at speeds similar to that of DSL and the licensed 4.9 frequency for police officers in squad cars to

download information crucial to public safety quickly over a secure network. Barletta said the company had problems because large areas of the City did not have light poles with 24x7 power and areas did not have any light poles at all, so now, Hollywood will only have wireless hotspots at the ArtsPark, Downtown Hollywood and the Beach. “This was a disappointment because we all had great expectations,” he said. “The company gave the City a $927,000 reconciliation check for the shortfall.” Johnson Controls, under the terms of the performance contract, guaranteed the performance of the technology improvements. They paid the shortfall check to the City in January. Despite these problems, Johnson Controls successfully installed 79 multispace parking meters in the Downtown and Beach areas that use the wireless technology to validate credit card payments in real-time. Barletta said the City will no longer lose money when residents or visitors pay for parking with invalid credit cards, and the meters also have the technology to inform the City when the machines have reached coin and cash capacity, improving efficiency. This wireless technology will also enable Hollywood’s water meter reading process to become fully automated, eliminating the need for City subcontractors to evaluate each household’s water meter and ensuring all utility customers obtain accurate and timely water billings based on actual usage. The automated system will also give the City flexible billing options and greater leak detection capabilities, Barletta said. The City has around 40,000 water meters and more than 39,800 have been installed. Barletta said Johnson Controls is now working on registering the water meters to be read electronically. All the information recorded by the meters will be sent to a computer at City Hall. “The parking meters are working really well,” he said, “and the water meters will allow us to use our resources better. We’re very close to coming up with a completion date.” For more information, visit www.hollywoodfl.org.

Music Club of Hollywood keeps music education alive for more than 61 years BY BRETT DALY | brett@hollywoodgazette.com ASSOCIATE EDITOR

For more than 61 years, the Music Club of Hollywood has enriched the art and entertainment culture of Hollywood by providing music education classes, offering musical performances and awarding scholarships to students pursuing a degree in music. Robert Coopman, president of the Music Club of Hollywood, said the nonprofit organization offers a variety of programs – which are open to the public – for anyone of any age and of any musical talent to participate in. Every Monday, for example, the Club hosts “Music Study Mondays,” an adult music appreciate class in which music enthusiasts meet to discuss composers and compositions, such as those by Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. They play these classic pieces and engage in lively discussions about them. In addition to the music education classes, the Music Club of Hollywood also offers regular member meetings on the first Saturday of each month. At these meetings, which are open to the public, Broward and Dade County residents have the opportunity to either perform their music, whether vocal or instrumental, in front of an audience,

or have the opportunity to simply watch performances by talented local residents. “Music is very important,” Coopman said. “The Music Club of Hollywood supports music programs, and it enriches everyone who participates in them. The members of the Club are very enthusiastic about music.” Coopman said the meetings attract performers of all ages, from 6-year-old pianists to professionals in the industry, and they even have sing-along songs at each meeting. In March, the Club will sing along to Irish ballads. And in an attempt to promote music among younger generations, the Club offers various scholarships to students seeking a way to make their musical aspirations a reality. The Club awards college-level students scholarships to attend universities (they receive $2,000 per semester for four years) and also awards younger students $500 scholarships to attend music camps during the summer. Recipients audition for these scholarships, and Coopman said there’s never a lack of talent. “The music departments in schools have a tough time making it,” Coopman said. “These scholarships help support children interested in the arts, and we would love to award more of them.” The 2010-2011 scholarship students

include Renee Henley, a violinist who attends Northwestern University School of Music in Chicago, Illinois; Catherine Spitzer, a vocalist who attends Roosevelt University College of the Performing Arts in Chicago, Illinois; Laine Schubert, a vocalist who attends Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey; Kimberly Zipoli, a flutist who attends the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida; and Adam Friedman, a guitarist who attends Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. The Club will hold auditions for scholarships on April 9 at President of the Music Club Robert Coopman with the Piano Music Center, 1950 scholarship winner Kimberly Zipoli, a flutist who attends SW 30th Ave., and Coopman the University of Central Florida in Orlando. encourages anyone with an inclination for music to audition. A taster’s choice of Jambalaya and the Gumbo were passed around the table, as well as the Red Beans and Rice. (All of these dishes brought back memories of Louisiana.) As we ordered appetizers, the server said we are overdoing it…it seems like this Meatball (4.95) was enough for the six of us to pass around, and because we ordered the Pork Pot Stickers (6.95), Coconut Shrimp (9.95) and the Stuffed Banana Peppers (6.95), one meatball was more than enough. It’s a big meatball… real big…15 ounces (HUGE). Try the meatball Italian style with cheese and homemade Italian sauce (just 6.50). Onto the Goat Cheese Salad, which

was more than enough for two to share (10.95). It was served with apple slices and deep-fried, phyllo-wrapped Goat Cheese Purses. We just had to have the Macadamia Crusted Chicken (14.95) topped with mango sauce and served with mashed potatoes and seasonal sautéed veggies – out of sight out and of mind. The Grilled Pork Chops (12.95) were so tender and flavorful we just didn’t have room for another main dish. The Café Du Monde Beignets (2.95) hot from the fryer with powdered sugar were heavenly, as was the Dark Rum Pecan Pie (4.95). My… my. The Crème Brule’ (3.95) is as good as it gets. I just can’t wait to go back for the fried Cheese Cake and the Chocolate Madness. I want to thank Chris Eberle and Jimmy Sklavenitis for bringing The Big

Easy to Hollywood for it was worth the wait. Don’t forget to save March 8 (Fat Tuesday), and join in on the Mardi Gras fun with a Blues Band – it’s all happening at The Big Easy… I just can’t wait. The Big Easy has a very happy Happy Hour from 11 a. m. till 8 p.m. (2-4-1 full liquor bar). Restaurant hours are from 11 a.m. till 2 a.m., seven days a week, serving great soups, salads, sandwiches and so much more. A great time was had by all. arch 1960, Elmont, New York - The Lieberman family is ready for their first motor trip to sunny Florida. Destination: a new hotel called the Eden Roc, in a place called My-Mommy-ami. Dad is armed with his prehistoric GPS (the AAA triptik). After driving for a few days, our ’56 Buick station wagon takes us past a little airport and a row of antique shops. An 8-year-old Bobby says, “I gotta go to the bathroom!” “We’re almost there,” says Dad. “I gotta go NOW!!” We hear a crunching of land crabs as we drive east on Sheridan. Turning south on A1A, Dad finds a little park. After using the bathroom, I see the aquamarine ocean for the first time and

say, “Wow, why can’t we live HERE?” “Someday you will,” says Mom. “Is this Miami, mommy?” “No, it’s Hollywood, Bobby.” That was Charnow Park. I now live 100 feet from there. I cherish every sunrise. During my professional career, I visited 103 countries. Many times, my secret first stop was Ft. Lauderdale, with a side trip to Hollywood Beach. After leaving industry, a wonderful Hollywood girl entered my life, and we purchased a little condo on the Broadwalk. When we open our windows, we are serenaded by the sound of the waves, the songs of the seagulls, and the thwack of the paddle balls in play. The uniqueness of Hollywood

Beach is our beautiful 2.5-mile car-free, oceanfront promenade. Where else can you walk, run, or ride your bike 24 hours a day, and feel safe? Two, three, and four-wheeled rental bikes are readily available. Swim, snorkel or body surf in our crystal clear ocean, and collect seashells on the seashore. Where else can you wave to the waves, with sand on one side and delicious restaurants on the other? I spend a lot of my free time being an unofficial tour guide of Hollywood Beach. Since you’re here, allow me to take you to a few of my favorite destinations. As we ride down the Broadwalk, our senses are awakened. Peoplewatching is pleasantly addictive. You see it all: from locals in flip-flops and cut-offs to visitors in cruisewear; from bikinis and Speedos to couture pencil skirts and heels. A myriad of languages takes you afar. Pizza, souvlaki, sushi, hot dogs, French fries, and fajitas are eager to tease the taste buds. Go for a nightly stroll amid the charming hotels, and Photo by Bob Lieberman

enjoy the live music at Johnson Street. Screaming for ice cream? You can get a cone for only a buck and a half. Now follow us as we begin our bike tour to West Lake Park. Leaving the Broadwalk, we proceed to A1A. Traveling north, we turn left onto Sheridan Street and cross over the Intracoastal bridge. Wow, look at those huge yachts below. The Ann Kolb Nature Center, a 1,500-acre mangrove estuary and habitat for birds, is just ahead. Beautiful tropical flowers, sea grapes and various palm trees surround us. A unique butterfly garden, museum and aquarium greet us. We climb the 65-foot observation tower (there is also an elevator ). The panoramic view is breathtaking: Looking north is downtown Ft. Lauderdale, east the Intracoastal and beyond the ocean. Below us we see the magnificent nature trails, each meandering through the mangroves to West Lake. Continuing our trek, we witness an army of land crabs scampering across the bank. West Lake Park is an ecofriendly paradise rich in nature and outdoor fun, from scenic bicycle trails and nature walks to full-moon kayaking. Nighttime guided sea turtle excursions and bird watching in a preserved wild life sanctuary makes this a must-see. The park offers pavilions for family barbecues and picnics, tennis, basketball and paddle ball courts, plus a refreshing water feature for the young ones. We continue west to Federal Highway, then head south to Young Circle, a 10-acre lush green space honoring Joseph W. Young, who envisioned and founded our City back in 1925. The ArtsPark contains broad, paved promenades for strolling or jogging, children’s play areas with an interactive fountain, plus a Great Lawn to simply lay out and relax. This place is a destination unto itself. Our return to the Beach follows Hollywood’s grandest boulevard. Stately homes and royal palms line Hollywood Boulevard. We pass Joseph Young’s original iconic mansion. Over the historic Hollywood Bridge, with the Intracoastal below us, we’re back on A1A.

In honor of President’s Day last month, Annette Sanchez’s fifth-grade class at Nativity Catholic School in Hollywood participated in a “Famous Americans” project, in which girls had to dress up as famous American women and boys as American presidents.

The students then performed speeches about the person they dressed up as. Parents had the opportunity to see each child in costume and to ask students questions, and Sanchez said each of her students did an amazing job.

Broward Comm. Jacobs appointed to national committee to protect oceans Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs has been appointed to the Obama Administration's National Ocean Council's Governance Coordinating Committee. The administration said the group is the nation's first “comprehensive, integrated” group to work on stewardship policies involving oceans, coasts and the Great Lakes. America's oceans and

coastal regions support tens of millions of jobs and contribute trillions of dollars a year to the national economy. For more information on Broward County Commissioner Kristin Jacobs, visit www. broward.org/jacobs.

National Ground Water Awareness Week, March 6-12 aims to protect groundwater Groundwater is important to every person, and there is something every person can do to be a good groundwater steward: That’s the core message of the 2011 National Ground Water Awareness Week March 6-12. “We all have a stake in groundwater, so every person should consider what he or she can do to preserve and

protect groundwater,” said Cliff Treyens, public awareness director for the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), which began the annual recognition week more than a decade ago. “Many people taking just a step or two to protect groundwater can make a big difference,” Treyens said. Treyens explained that consumers’ daily

habits can affect groundwater quality. “How you store, use and dispose of hazardous household substances can affect groundwater quality,” he said. “In the same manner, whether you regularly maintain your water well or septic system can impact the groundwater that serves as someone’s water supply.”

REAL ESTATE

“Ask the Pink Realtor”

Hollywood Real Estate Q&A

BY ROCHELLE LE CAVALIER | RochelleLeCavalier@gmail.com Have a question about the real estate market? Ask the Pink Realtor: E-mail RochelleLeCavalier@gmail.com

Dear Pink Realtor, When it comes to the market, all everyone seems to be talking about is getting into real estate investing. A friend tells me that I can do a selfdirected retirement account and buy rental property myself. Is it true? I don’t know anyone who has done this. I have an IRA and some money in stocks that are doing nothing! Sincerely, Can I get some Honey for my Money? Dear Money Honey (great signoff, by the way!), Real estate has historically been a sought-after investment vehicle primarily because of long-term stability (real estate has appreciated at a rate of 5.32 percent over the past 40 years including our recent bubble and subsequent bubble burst) paired with the ability of an investor to employ a higher degree of leverage than other segments. Add to that the fact that we are at historical lows in terms of price, and voila, we have what I am calling the new “sexy factor” of private portfolio real estate. The opportunity to buy an investment at all-time historical lows AND Real Estate investments available via Funds, ETFs, REITs, etc., can be more readily measured against an index and are one way to go. I am not a securities broker, but there is plenty of

information online or available from your financial adviser, stockbroker, etc. The one thing about that style of investing is you have no control over any of the investing activities, while with a self-directed portfolio you can educate yourself and make decisions based on what is best for you. There are several companies out there that can facilitate this style of investing and properly set you up with a self-directed retirement account. I like Equity Trust (www.trustetc.com). In addition, you will want to speak with your tax adviser and a licensed real estate agent who has worked with this style of investing before. I recommend finding a Realtor with at least five years experience with investment grade transactions who carries the designation of Certified Investor Agent Specialist (CIAS). Find one at www.cias.com. LeCavalier has an extensive background in land development, construction, mortgage banking, and real estate sales, marketing and management with more than 15 years experience in the industry. She is known as the “Pink Realtor” around South Florida where she and her team cheerfully serve the real estate needs of many clients. In addition, LeCavalier serves as Fund Manager for SISCO Limited Partners, a private equity fund that rehabilitates foreclosed properties and rents them via affordable housing programs in Broward County, and she is a licensed Real Estate Agent and an Accredited Residential Manager (IREM, ARM). Winning the Battle against Chronic Illness By Janet Gerner, LCSW Growing older can be a challenge when you are in the best of health. Throw in a chronic health condition like diabetes, lung disease, hypertension or arthritis and the challenges of aging can be overwhelming, depressing and daunting. Approximately 80 percent of seniors in the United States live with at least one chronic condition, while 50 percent have two or more chronic health conditions. If you happen to be one of the 133 million or if you happen to be caring for someone with a chronic illness, there is help and hope. The help is free and it is available throughout the country. The Stanford University Chronic Disease SelfManagement Program (CDSMP), also known as the Living Healthy Program, helps people break the symptom cycle of chronic illness. Those symptoms, which are common to all with a chronic illness, include frustration, fear, fatigue, pain, depression, anxiety and stress. In six short weeks, participants learn how to take control of their health rather than be controlled by their illness. During each two and a half hour weekly session,

which is highly participative, group members learn new coping strategies. Through mutual support and sharing of experiences, they gain self-confidence in their ability to control the symptoms and effects of their condition. Weekly action plans, brainstorms and problem solving techniques empower participants to take control, which leads to better decision making and symptom management. If you are interested in a program that will help you make better choices for better health, Google CDSMP along with your location. You will be surprised at the number of organizations offering seniors and caregivers a chance to improve their lives. The group is also offered online through the National Council on Aging. If you live in Broward County, you can call 954-759-6740 or 954-759-6734 and speak to Kim or Janet for information on the next available Living Healthy Group in Ft. Lauderdale. Our chances of developing a chronic illness increases as we age. If you happen to get that dreaded diagnosis, help is available, and it is free. You can win the battle.

SMALL BUSINESS MARKETING

Five steps to make 2011 a triumphant year

BY Wendy Crocquet Lieber | wendy@athena-marketing.com

By the time you read this, we will have already entered the third month of 2011. That means there only 10 months left in the year. I bring this up because I’ve noticed increased activity in the business community lately. When I ask someone how things are going, I’m consistently hearing “Busy,” “Crazy,” “Awesome,” and “Overwhelmed.” Peter Drucker, a management consultant and writer, said, “You cannot manage what you don’t measure.” It seems obvious, yet when business get’s busy, we often put measuring and analysis on the back burner until there is time. Given that 2011 appears to be starting out nicely for most, I want to make sure we don’t lose ourselves in trying to make up for lost time and repeating some bad habits from the past. So, I’ve put together five steps to ensure you end up where you want at the end of 2011. 1) Identify your company’s Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) Quantifiable measurements that reflect the critical success factors of your organization. I like having no more than five, but depending on your business, you may need more. Examples of some KPI’s include: number of new customers acquired in the last 30 days, percent increase in website conversions, increase in average project size, etc. The list is endless so choose wisely. If you try to measure too much, you’ll end up measuring nothing. 2) Identify who will be responsible for each KPI – Make sure one person has ultimate accountability for measuring and reporting the KPI. Determine the frequency it will be discussed. Monthly is a good place to start – if not weekly.

3) Make sure there is a simple process for measurement – Don’t just assign someone the responsibility of measuring a KPI without making sure there is a simple process. If it’s too time consuming, either figure out how to simplify it or pick something else. 4) What does it mean? – Don’t just report it. Data means nothing if you don’t learn something from it. Discuss it, use it to grow from, create action steps as a result. Even if your KPI reveals something negative, it’s always a positive because now you know and can do something about it. 5) Do It Consistently - Develop the discipline to review, discuss and learn from your KPI’s however frequently you determine is right for your business. Things will come up that make it easy to skip a week or month, so don’t let that happen. If you do steps one through four correctly, this one will be the easiest to do because you will very quickly determine the value it creates in your business. It’s easy and common to get caught up in “being busy” versus “being impactful,” especially when so many companies have had too much quiet time on their hands the past few years. Don’t let the excitement of growth get in the way of making sure you take a real measurable advantage of what is shaping up to be a great year.

The agent you list your home with cannot set the sales price of your home, any more than your stock broker dictates the price of your stock. Selling price is a dictated by the current real estate market. NEVER SELECT AN AGENT BASED ON THE PRICE THEY ARE WILLING TO LIST. The vast majority of homes expiring unsold today are a result of unrealistic pricing due to poor advice from agents. The problem with this often extends to the next agent, who must overcome the obvious “shopworn” result of the home being on the market for an extended period. Most often this results in the home selling for less than it would have, had the home been properly listed at the start. “Cindy Abraham and the A team work with you to get your home SOLD!”

Quality, low-cost programs offered to seniors Programs offered at the Meyerhoff Senior Center

BY BRETT DALY ASSOCIATE EDITOR brett@hollywoodgazette.com

Emilio Biamonte, a 91-year-old Hollywood resident, can’t think of a better place to spend his days than at the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center. He simply thinks it’s terrific. He loves participating in music therapy classes, dancing at the monthly birthday parties, playing dominoes, going to the Finding Joy in Your Life group and socializing with the other members during lunch at the Center. The Center, which began offering programs in 1978 and has existed at its current location in Hollywood since 1987, aims to meet the needs of older adults and their families, with care and dignity, by providing the community a variety of programs and services, according to its website. The 501(c) (3) charitable agency offers many free programs and services, such as education classes like current events and computer literacy, tai-chi, yoga, and referrals for Medicare and Medicaid, to Broward residents 60 or older and to residents caring for these individuals. “Many seniors could be isolated in their homes, and this is a place where they can gather together,” said Beth A. Allen, executive director of the Center. “The Center is a support system. They make friends here. It keeps them connected to each other and, more importantly, to the community.” The Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center strives to keep seniors active and engaged, Allen said. And with the wide variety of programs offered, she said there’s something for everyone. An adult day care program also offers the elderly who are physically or cognitively challenged structured activities like music, movement and pet therapy, brain games, exercise, creative art activities, discussion groups and outings in the community for those who can. “It saves us from going crazy at home alone,” said Esther Graber, a Davie resident. “You feel satisfied that you have done something constructive at the end of the day.” In addition to physical fitness and education classes, the Center also provides day trips for seniors that include trips to the grocery store, local attractions and cultural events, as well as overnight trips and cruises. On Sunday, April 3, for example, the Center will provide buses to take seniors to the David Posnack Jewish Community Center to watch Jackie Jacob, an international star who’s headlined

shows all around the world, perform in “L’Chaim to Life 2011,” a musical journey celebrating Jewish culture. Allen said support from the community and local organizations have allowed the Center to keep its doors open to the seniors who have come to rely on the nonprofit for both basic human necessities and entertainment. “The Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center is an independent nonprofit agency that lost a major funding source this year while costs to provide services, programs and transportation continue to go up,” Allen said. “We are pleased that the Jim Moran Foundation is supporting us with a $50,000 grant to support our senior center programs and our buses. We continue to look for other sources of funding to help us keep our doors open. We want all of the older adults and their families in our community to know we are here for them.” For more information about the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center located at 3081 Taft St., visit www. meyerhoffcenter.org or call 954-9669805.

Fight cancer at Hollywood’s Relay For Life on March 25 and 26 The City of Hollywood will join hundreds of communities across the country in the American Cancer Society’s 2011 Relay For Life. The local Relay For Life will take place March 25 to 26 in Historic Downtown Hollywood. The Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event that brings together communities in the fight against cancer. People of all ages come together to raise funds to support the research, education, advocacy and patient services provided

by the American Cancer Society. The annual event brings together more than 3.5 million people across the country to celebrate those battling cancer, to remember loved ones lost to this disease, and to fight back. Communities participate by organizing teams of 10 to 15 people who camp out at a public location and take turns walking or running laps. Relays are an overnight event, up to 18 hours in length. More than 260 people on 24 teams participated Hollywood’s 2009 Relay

For Life, raising more than $47,000 toward the fight against cancer. This year’s fundraising goal has been set at $60,000. The 2011 event will begin at 6 p.m. at the Arts Park at Young Circle, located at Hollywood Boulevard and U.S. 1. For additional information about how to form a team or become involved in Relay for Life, contact Lauren Welch at the American Cancer Society at 954200-7532 or visit www.relayforlife.org.

IN THE LOOP: seen around town in hollywood

Locals keep busy visiting Hollywood hotspots, participating in Hollywood events By David Udoff | dmu088@aol.com CORRESPONDENT

Commissioner Patricia Asseff, whose district includes Hollywood Beach, lent her support to Bob Lieberman, founder of Bikes 4 Kids, in an annual Beach Bike Day on the Broadwalk. Lieberman searches for discarded bicycles in acceptable condition. He fixes the bikes up and gives them to needy youngsters. Ben & Jerry’s dished out their sugar-packed ice cream free to those who participated on that picture-perfect day.

Aline Mecke and Jackie Kinernan also lent their support to Lieberman and the Bikes 4 Kids event.

For those who have a “green thumb,” Home Depot Nursery in Oakwood Plaza bustles during the weekends with gardeners stocking up on perennials, annuals, citrus trees and ornamental shrubs. A key to a verdant garden is to select native plants seen at local parks or neighborhood yards that are thriving – imitation is the best kind of flattery – just ask first-time home buyers Gil Gutierrez and Sara Cohen who shopped to strengthen their home’s curb appeal.

Searching for something to do this weekend? Visit the Yellow Green Farmers Market on Taft Street in Hollywood where individuals gather around fresh fruits and vegetables and much more. Sip on a cool mango smoothie and have a falafel or taco. Shoppers saunter along and have a friendly chats with merchants, and general manager Mark Menagh is always looking for new entrepreneurs to join the list of merchants.
