COVER STORY

NOT YOUR AVERAGE CANCER STORY: Hollywood Hills resident shares her "Breast Choice" SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE toribertran@gmail.com

You know you’ve seen them before. Heck, they practically have their own genre: “cancer stories.” A mom, or perhaps a teenager, faces a devastating diagnosis and proceeds through the five stages of grief before finding peace and teaching us all timeless spiritual truths. It’s as old as Brian’s Song, The Bucket List, The Fault in our Stars, Love Story, The Doctor, and Sweet November. If we really put our mind to it, we can probably name a dozen more. But every cancer story is different, and in real life, the mix of tragedy and triumph is rarely as neatly packaged as the cancer story genre would have us believe. I bet you’ve never seen a cancer story like Aniela’s. For one thing, Aniela McGuinness isn’t a mom, or a student, or a teenager. She also (spoiler alert) doesn’t die at the end. The story doesn’t even begin with her cancer story. It begins with her mother’s. This is also not your average mother’s day tribute – Aniela’s mother died young, and Aniela will never be able to conceive, not that she ever wanted to. Like I said, not a typical mother’s day story. DNA is an amazing thing. Billions of little base pairs duplicating in your body, each cell loaded with the complete blueprint to make you. With any duplication, however, every so often a mistake happens, and something is copied incorrectly and in the wrong combination, this can lead to a cancerous tumor. Even then, we have a few weapons in our genetic arsenal, genes whose only purpose is to stop, or kill, tumors. You’ve probably heard of two of them, known as BRCA1 and BRCA2. Specifically, these genes help stave off breast and ovarian cancers, and almost all of us, male and female, rely on them to keep us from developing cancers of the breast, ovaries, colon, and pancreas. Cancer is, fundamentally, a disease of DNA errors. And we use BRCA1 and BRCA2 to fix those errors. Unfortunately, the BRCA genes are themselves encoded in DNA. And they too, can have errors. Aniela’s mother, Pam, had such a mutation. At 46, she developed, and survived breast cancer, through a lumpectomy and radiation. But BRCA errors persist beyond breasts, and still exist 4

MAY 2015

in every single cell in a person’s body. 10 years later, Pam developed ovarian cancer, and died seven years later. Aniela was 13 when her mother’s cancer story began. Almost twenty years later, it’s still going on. Like many people touched by cancer, Aniela chose to test for BRCA mutations when she was 26, and found that along with her fair skin and great smile, she had inherited a BRCA-1 mutation from her mother. From the time she was 26, she knew she had roughly an 80% chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime, and a 55% chance of developing ovarian cancer. In 2014, she, she opted for a prophylactic mastectomy. Four days before scheduling the surgery, she found out it wasn’t prophylactic after all. She actually had breast cancer. “I never thought I would actually get cancer. I thought I was special.” Even after a scrape (sorry!) with skin cancer a few years ago, she still thought she would make it through unscathed. A Hollywood native pretty much her whole life, Aniela attended South Broward High School, where she met her future husband, Jordan. They’ve been together since she was 15 years old. She lives on a quiet street in Hollywood Hills, and is close to her neighbors. “When I found out I had cancer I went straight to my neighbor's house. They knew before my husband did.” "My mother was very quiet about her cancer,” she says. "As a caregiver, it made it very hard on my dad and I. We burned out. I didn’t want to do that to Jordan." Instead, she went public. At first, she created a web series called “My Breast Choice”, about her decision to remove her breasts. Eventually, it turned into a story about chemotherapy. Looking to ease the burden on her husband, she also outsourced doctor’s visits and chemo treatments the friends, by posting on Facebook and “awarding” volunteers with the chance to accompany her and spend the day with her. “We had so much fun. Friends kept telling me that they had come expecting to

Aniela before her mastectomy and chemo treatments

BY TORI BERTRAN

cheer me up and by the end of the day it was them who had been cheered up.” As a writer, model, and actor, Aniela didn’t stop there. A few days after her surgery, she was challenged by a friend to create a one-woman show. "I was asked to do a show by David Christopher at Just the Funny". She reached out to a performer friend in Chicago for advice, and with a co-writer, spent the next two months working on her show. "It took us about two months to write, and we continued writing, and the last 15 minutes took about another 3 months," she says. “The story kept changing because I was literally writing during my chemo, and as my story changed the show evolved too.” One thing that didn’t change was the ending. From the first draft, she planned on showing the audience her surgery scars.

“We both really wanted the ending, and it ended up working really well. Besides, you know everyone in the audience was wondering what it looked like. And the googly eyes make it that much more fun". You kind of have to be there to see that. She premiered her show “I Don’t Have Cancer” during her chemo treatments. In fact, she also designed the website, the palm cards, the posters, sold tickets, and marketed the show during chemo. As the title of her show says, she doesn’t have cancer. But she did. And her cancer story is not over yet – Aniela will be undergoing a complete hysterectomy soon, with the attendant early menopause. And what about the most important part of the cancer story genre? The life lesson? "We put value in assets with diminishing returns. The hair, the nails, the eyelashes, the beauty, the perky breasts, the tight body all this things we put so much value in can be stripped away. If I still have value after these things are gone, then they probably weren’t that important to begin with." Aniela got far more from her mom than a mutation. In her own way, Pam is still providing strength to her daughter. “I think she would have been proud that I have been helping other women by being so open. And I know she would have been proud of me for following my dream as an actress and creating my own show. Even though this isn't the way she did her cancer, she would have understood that this is how I had to do mine.” For more information, visit Aniela's web site www.mybreastchoiceshow.com or check out her posts on social media: Instagram @AnielaMcG, Facebook.com/ MyBreastChoice, YouTube.com/ MyBreastChoice.

Local retired teacher with cerebral palsy mentors students at McArthur High School

Richard Downer loves to work with CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com teenagers. And as a mentor at McArthur High School, he gets plenty of opportunities to advise young people who need a person to talk with and to show them what it takes to pursue a successful life. And he offers powerful example of someone who has overcome some obstacles. Downer has cerebral palsy. He is 50 years old and has been confined t o a wheelchair his entire life. But that did not stop him from living a full and successful life. He retired from a 24 year career with Miami-Dade County Public Schools where he worked as a paraprofessional and then a teacher of adult

basic education. “I did not want to sit and do nothing and I like working with teenagers. So I became a mentor. I am here to talk with the students. I tell them about the importance of making good choices, overcoming obstacles and the importance of career planning,” said Downer. “I tell them about the value of hard work and

that there is nothing you can’t overcome if you have perseverance.” Downer wants to expand his mission. He has created an organization called Teaching Involves Mentoring and Education (TIME). He hopes this organization will allow him to reach more young people and wants business

owners in Hollywood to provide him with financial support. And he has a strong rapport with young people, many of whom are facing struggles of their own. Downers sits in an outdoor area in front of the school and talks with the young people about the challenges they are going through. He has a pleasant personality and is willing to listen to the students about tests both in school and in the real world they must face. He will bring clothing and school supplies to students who need these items. “Being a high school student today is not easy. The students have many challenges including the passing of state mandated tests. I want to establish relationships with them and I hope they will keep in touch after they graduate from McArthur,” said Downer. And young people gravitate to Downer. Kristopher Robledo, 18, a senior said, “He talks with me and guides me in the right direction. Now I am working at Publix. I want to be an Air Force pilot,” said Robledo. BOLD Justice members push for Seniors Task Force, call for reduction in youth arrests

Rev. Michael Anderson with Hollywood Police Department representatives who were present to follow-up on a previous commitment they made to reduce arrests by implementing a diversionary program, Civil Citation. On Monday, April 20, over 1200 members of Broward Organized Leaders Doing Justice (BOLD Justice) crowded into St. David Catholic Church to demand justice for youth offenders and senior citizens. Facing the crowd were Mayor Tim Ryan, Vice Mayor Marty Kiar, and Commissioner Dale Holness, along with other members of the county administration, Hollywood Police Department, and Broward Sheriff's Office. The interfaith group, made up of 17 diverse congregations, invited these officials to their annual Nehemiah Action Assembly where the organization asks public officials to answer for their concerns about the community. This year, the group brought forth concerns about seniors in long-term care facilities. Two brothers shared a testimony about their mother who was brutally attacked at an Assisted Living Facility in Hollywood and later died from her injuries. Broward County has the third highest population of seniors in Florida. Broward County as almost 300 Assisted Living Facilities with over 8,000 beds. In the last four years, these facilities have been cited for more than 5,000 violations. BOLD Justice leaders won commitments from Mayor Ryan, Vice Mayor Kiar and Commissioner Holness to support the creation of a county-led Task Force to investigate the troubling number of violations. Vice Mayor Kiar agreed to sponsor a resolution to create the Task Force. Additionally, BOLD Justice has been working with nine other groups across Florida to reduce the number of children arrested for minor offenses. Instead, this coalition wants to see more children access the state's civil

citation program. “BSO has made civil citation a priority for this area and the results are clear, civil citation works,” said Rev. Michael Anderson, Pastor of New Jerusalem Baptist Church and Co-President of BOLD Justice. Rev. Anderson went on to say, “The problem is civil citation is not being implemented consistently across the state. When a child is arrested, that arrest follows them for life.” In 2014, 13,000 children were arrested who were eligible for civil citation. The ten organizations across Florida have been working together to push the state legislature to pass Senate Bill 378 and House Bill 99. These bills will expand civil citation across Florida. At the Nehemiah Action, BOLD Justice leaders followed up with the Hollywood Police Department who committed at last year's Assembly to implement civil citation. The department announced it has been implemented for the past month and two civil citations have been issued. BOLD Justice is the largest faith-based community organizing group in the county. Member congregations represent thousands of Anglo, African American, Haitian and Caribbean families. In 2008, BOLD Justice held its first large action, resulting in the creation of 2,322 units of affordable housing in Broward. The organization was instrumental in passing the Workforce Investment Act in 2014, and passing state legislation that expanded access to drug courts to more than 2,000 people and saving the state of Florida more than $95 million. Broward Commission approves tougher inspections for vehicle for hire operators

The Broward County Commission dvolz@hollywoodgazette. recently approved more stringent mechanical inspections of transportation network companies (TNC) such as Uber and Lyft, and all other for-hire vehicles. Now, drivers for these companies will have to undergo more thorough background checks. Taxi cab companies have complained that TNCs don’t face the same regulations and fees they do and that these new vehicle for hire operators cut into their business, especially at the airport. Unlike taxi cabs, TNC's are not paying airport fees for picking up passengers at the airport. Taxi drivers do, and this money is used to pay for the maintenance of the airport. Under the proposed new terms, for hire vehicles will have to be inspected by a mechanic and meet requirements as proposed by the County. A checklist will be developed requiring mechanical inspections and aesthetic inspections. "You don't need two different inspections," said Commissioner Mark Bogen. "I propose they go to a mechanic and get it done." "What's important is that the mechanical inspection and physical inspection occur. Whatever is most expedient," said Commissioner Lois Wexler.

“I think Uber is an innovative platform. It is part of a wave of what people call the sharing economy which is manifesting itself in numerous ways,” said Commissioner Beam Furr. “For Uber drivers, it is a lifeline and helps them find jobs that were not available them. People are using technology to communicate quickly and bring services and people together.” Furr supports transportation network companies like Uber if they are willing to meet certain conditions. He believes these companies have something to offer consumers and that the competition they bring to the market will improve transportation in general. “I think the competition has forced taxis to raise their game. They have enjoyed a monopoly and become complacent. Now we are seeing taxis push customer service, using apps and improving their cars,” said Furr. "We use Uber and Lyft all the time. I love how you know exactly when they'll arrive and the cost. I have been ripped off and stood up by taxis too many times. I will do whatever I can to support these two great companies," said South Florida resident Diane Solberg. The challenge is that this new technology is outpacing the current regulatory environment. And Furr believes these companies need to be regulated. He believes that all transportation network companies should undergo a background check, carry insurance and have their

vehicles inspected for safety. “These are very low thresholds and I think drivers should be able to meet them,” said Furr. Background checks of all for hire drivers would be expanded to include statewide and national criminal background checks and require fingerprinting. The broader background check would be conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI and alert the County if a driver committed a crime nationwide. Currently, Broward County conducts statewide criminal background checks and a driving record check every two years. The additional cost of the background screenings will be paid for by the driver. "We don't want to over regulate this industry, be we do want to protect the public and do what is in the best interest of public safety," noted Mayor Tim Ryan. "My issue is safety and security. I want to insure that a level two background check would flag the county if any crime is committed by a driver out of state or this jurisdiction," said Commissioner Chip LaMarca. "Life in this country is vastly improved through the past 20 years because of the free market," commented Hollywood resident Omar E. Recuero. "These companies are showing how consumer demand trumps all." The County Attorney's office will draft an ordinance incorporating the changes for a public hearing and future Commission approval.

DOWNTOWN EVENTS

Creative individuals sought for photo portrait mural, part of a global art project BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Creative individuals of all ages who live or work in Hollywood are being sought to participate in Inside Out Downtown Hollywood, part of a unique global photography art project and one of the ways in which community groups and organizations can commemorate Broward County’s centennial. Inside Out Downtown Hollywood is being organized by Broward 100 – Celebrating the Art of Community, the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood (the Center). To illustrate the theme of “Creatives making a difference in Hollywood,” creative individuals of all ages will be featured on a large-scale mural consisting of black-and-white photo portraits pasted on a building at 1740 S. Young Circle in Downtown Hollywood. The portraits will be shot by a professional photographer at the Center on Saturday, May 9 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.; no appointments are needed. Broward 100 will review and select approximately 200 photos that will be included in the project. The images will be pasted on multiple walls of 1740 S. Young Circle, a two-story building located across the street from of the ArtsPark at Young Circle and steps away from the Center. The property is owned and managed by Downtown Hollywood based developer MG3 Hollywood LLC. The Inside Out Downtown Hollywood mural will be installed on June 13 in conjunction with the opening of the Center’s “Wayne White: Art is Supposed to Hypnotize You or Something” exhibit. Free on-street parking is available in three-hour increments between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Municipal garage parking is $1 per hour at 251 S. 20th Avenue and 251 N. 19th Avenue. For more information on the Broward 100 Inside Out project, visit http://www. broward.org/Broward100/InsideOut/ or email Broward100@broward.org. Those featured in Inside Out Downtown Hollywood will join over 200,000 people from more than 180 countries who have taken part in the world’s largest participatory art project. Inside Out is inspired by Parisian street artist JR, who uses his camera to show the world its true face by pasting photos of the human face across massive canvases. Since 2007, Inside Out installations have appeared on walls, sidewalks, streets, skyscrapers and historic buildings around the globe. Each installation is documented, archived and exhibited online to capture the collective messages of community groups

through headshots of their individual members. Installations have occurred in over 100 countries and major cities including Paris, London, Rome, New York City, New Orleans and now Broward County. Broward 100 will be one of the largest participating organizations in the global art project. Inside Out Broward will showcase the human spirit of the residents and hard-working community groups of Broward County, and tell their stories to the community and the world.

The Inside Out project is one of four innovative art and performance projects offered through Broward 100 – Celebrating the Art of Community, which commemorates Broward County’s 100th birthday. Jill Weisberg, project manager of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project for the Hollywood CRA, said the Inside Out project is the ideal way for Downtown Hollywood to participate in Broward 100 – Celebrating the Art of Community.

Weisberg said the Inside Out Downtown Hollywood installation will be consistent with JR’s artistic vision. “We’re going to play with the scale of the headshots,” she said about the temporary installation. “Inside Out Downtown Hollywood will be true to the aesthetic of JR’s work.” For information on Downtown Hollywood events or businesses, call the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-924-2980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.

Comprehensive assisted living facility reform passes Hollywood to offer a wide variety of camps this summer BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

Senator Sobel and Representative Ahern have spearheaded critically important legislative efforts to implement much needed reform in the assisted living facility (ALF) industry. “I’m happy to finally send this good reform to the Governor’s desk,” said Senator Sobel, who chairs the Senate Children, Families and Elder Affairs Committee. “The bar has been raised to protect our most vulnerable citizens. Attention has been focused

on helping the premier senior state in our nation, Florida, in attracting Baby Boomers and giving them reasons to retire here.” "This bill creates a balance between the safety of residents, the agency's ability to identify and solve problems, and the owners of the communities to create more comfortable and safe environments, allowing residents to age in place for a longer period of time," said Representative Ahern. “Between 2010 and 2030, 56.9 % of

Summer is almost here and that means children are going to be looking for something to do during the time they are not in school. The City of Hollywood offers an extensive summer camp program and registration is now going on. “We offer a variety of summer camps in Hollywood that appeal to every child’s interests and fit every parent’s pocketbook,” says David Vasquez, Hollywood’s Assistant Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Camps will be in demand this summer and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts is offering week long camps on themes ranging from video game design, computer graphics and animation to Minecraft and Lego Robotics. These camps are offered at various times and locations through the week of August 7. Maximize Out of School Time (M.O.S.T.) This camp is designed to provide a fun supervised environment designed to help improve the participant’s academic performance, encourage social skills development, provide daily physical fitness opportunities, and teach the children how to work together while conducting community service learning projects. This 9 week summer camp runs through August 7 and is being held at Kay Gaither, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington Park and McNicol Community Centers. South Broward High School students work on boat engines in the Marine Service program. A visit to the South Broward High School workshop revealed students working on various marine engines. They learn valuable skills in repairing engines and can get jobs in the marine industry that start at more than $30,000 a year. There are seven levels of training available in the program and students can earn certifications that will lead directly to good jobs. Students learn basic repair skills and how to work with tools. More advanced students can work on real-life repair projects.
