HEALTH

Cancer teaches Hollywood woman about helping others at Memorial Regional, where DeSousa underwent her chemotherapy treatment.

BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

Elizabeth “Lisa” DeSousa was born October 2, 1969, at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood. She recalls spending every day at Hollywood Beach with her brothers, graduating from South Broward High School and meeting her husband at a friend’s home in Hollywood more than 26 years ago. She also recalls her recent battle with cancer. “It started June 1, 2015, when I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, stage 3.” DeSousa was working at Memorial Regional Hospital for a short time when she received the news. “I felt bad stomach pains while at work and kept ignoring it. My stomach was bloated and I couldn’t eat as I felt full all the time. The next morning I went to the hospital’s emergency room and was diagnosed,” she says.

THE DIAGNOSIS

THE OUTCOME

Elizabeth and her daughter Raechel lip balm, lotion, socks and candy to take the metal taste out of my mouth. I treasured that gift and used it every day.” Every time DeSousa looked at the bag, it reminded her that someone cared about her. “We always hear about the bad stuff on the news, I want people to know the good stuff. Someone took the time to help me feel a little better about what I was going through and then it hit

Testing confirmed she had not only ovarian cancer but abdominal cancer as well. “I couldn’t walk, could barely talk and the pain was horrible. I thought I was going to die,” says DeSousa. Devastated, she searched for inspiration.“Since the beginning of this journey, I’ve asked God to show me how I can turn my pain into helping others.” “I thought about everything I went through,” DeSousa says. “One of the biggest obstacles I faced, like many cancer patients, is as great as chemo kills the cancer, it also comes with many uncomfortable side Knitted hats by Elizabeth and her daughter effects.” Raechel DeSousa’s surgery and chemo treatments were all performed at me: I have something to give — a smile Memorial Regional but her weekly chemo to someone who needs it.” With that was stopped with five months left, as realization, Stronger Together was born. she developed extreme neuropathy in her To make it happen DeSousa needed hands and feet. Though it’s much better help, so she held a fundraiser. She says, now, one of her arms swells up with “My supportive family, friends and I lymphedema, making it hard to raise or raised enough money to make 50 care pick things up, but she is very grateful to bags filled with scarves, lotion, lip balm, be alive and cancer-free. a journal, pen, water bottle, puzzle book, blanket, socks, candy, popcorn and hats knitted by my daughter Raechel and I.” THE CARE BAGS DeSousa and Raechel didn’t know how to knit but decided that knitted “When I first started chemo hats would be a great way to help keep treatments, my wonderful sister-in-law the patient’s heads warm. “We taught gave me a care bag,” DeSousa says. “She ourselves how to knit,” says DeSousa. told me it was to help me during chemo “It was actually a great way to release and was filled with all kinds of goodies: 4

everyday stress as it kept me from concentrating on my pain. Instead, I focused on the hats keeping the kids’ heads warm.” Their first care bags went to Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital. “My daughter and I decided on a SuperBoy and SuperGirl theme for the kids. It was amazing to see the smiles on their faces and how caring and loving the nurses were.” DeSousa and Raechel held a second fundraiser and gave the 50 care bags to all the patients in the Cancer Center

While she is still being treated at Memorial Hospital and gets monthly blood work, it has only been 10 months since DeSousa’s journey began, but she has faith that she will be fine. “I have gone through a lot of challenges and some days are better than others, but I’m getting stronger every day and know that God is by my side,” she says. Committed to continue trying to raise funds in support of others fighting cancer and chemo, DeSousa says, “I know the depression that comes with it. I was lucky enough to have a great family that supported me and still does. Not everyone is that lucky, so if I can make a difference in someone’s life I will. I want them to know there is someone who cares and they are not alone in this battle.” DeSousa still lives in Hollywood, as does her mother. Two of her brothers live in West Park and one brother in Miramar. Raechel is in college to be a nurse and her son Eric is in the Air Force. Former Broward Teachers Union Pat Santeramo receives five year prison sentence Former BY DAVID VOLZ Broward CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Teachers Union president Patrick Santeramo was sentenced to five years in prison. He was charged with many fraud and campaign contributions from his eleven years of leading the union. He was sentenced by Broward Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Levenson. Santeramo’s five year prison sentence on a charge of first-degree Organized Fraud will be followed by five years of probation. He also received concurrent fiveyear sentences for one count of third-degree Organized Fraud, one count of Money Laundering and three counts of Campaign

Contribution Violations. As a special condition of probation, he must pay restitution of $163,500 to two insurance companies. The prosecutors asked for a ten year sentence. Between 2001 and January 2012, Santeramo was able to systematically divert about $165,500 in union funds to himself through an invoice-kickback scheme with a construction company. In one of those 43 instances of racketeering that investigators uncovered, Santeramo had a construction bill BTU $89,295 for repairing the BTU building elevators. The company gave $20,000 of the union’s payment back to Santeramo in cash.

MUNICIPAL NEWS

Hollywood commission supports penny sales surtax

Last month, the Hollywood CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Commission agreed to support an effort by the Broward County Commission to bring a one cent sales surtax to the ballot in November. The surtax is proposed to fund safety, infrastructure and transportation improvements. During the meeting Commissioner Dick Blattner stressed the importance of this sales tax and how it would be used to pay for important needs in Hollywood. The tax would be on purchases up to $5,000. The penny surtax applies only to what is currently taxed, AND applies only to the first $5,000 of an expense," explains Blattner. "So that $100,000 Tesla will only have the penny on the first $5,000, or an additional $50." "We need this penny sales tax,” said BY DAVID VOLZ

Blattner. “Without this money we can’t make needed improvements. The only other way we could fund the repairs would be to issue bonds and this means the debt goes on the tax bill.” Under current plans, 40 percent of the tax proceeds would go to Broward County. Much of the money would be used to pay for buses and possibly light rail. And 60 percent would be divided among the 31 Broward cities based on population. The cities could be used to pay for improvements to streets, sidewalks, alleys, public buildings landscaping and affordable housing. It is estimated that Hollywood would receive $250 million over 25 years from the one cent sales tax. "The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organizations (BMPO) and County are at impasse at the moment, but we continue to meet," explained Blatter, who serves as the Chair of the BMPO. "It can be stated

with some historical accuracy that the relationship and trust between the County and the cities is icy. Beam Furr, our County Commissioner, has been a light in the dark and is going a great job representing Hollywood progressively." City Manager Dr. Wazir Ishmael is in favor of the one cent sales tax. “Although transportation needs are great, additional funds could support projects such as road resurfacing, improved sidewalk conductivity, the implementation of new technologies like mobile ticketing, and support for multimodal transportation options. As city leaders, we are taking a proactive approach urging the County to distribute a portion of the revenue directly to each individual city,” said Ishmael.

50th anniversary celebration of Jaycee Hall set for May 21 The Greater Hollywood PUBLISHER jennifer@hollywoodgazette.com Jaycees and the Hollywood Jaycees Foundation will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Jaycee Hall, on Saturday, May 21, 2016. The celebration will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, cocktail reception, and remembrances of what kind of impact Jaycee Hall has had through the years, on the Jaycees’ efforts to serve the community.

BY JENNIFER LOVE

Who are the Jaycees? The Greater Hollywood Jaycees has been on the forefront of community service, as well as personal and professional growth since 1966. Over the years, the Chapter has played an instrumental role in starting the Broward County Fair, and developing Perry Airport and several local parks. Member efforts have benefited countless charitable organizations, underprivileged families, and children in the community. The Chapter is well-known for having developed prominent leaders from local to county-wide, and in the State Capital who have gotten their start with the Greater Hollywood Jaycees. One constant during the last 50 years, has been Jaycee Hall. Chapter members have never had to worry about a place to meet or plan the next project to help the community. Hall rentals have also provided much-needed seed money to help get those projects off the ground. The Anniversary Celebration will mark the kick-off of an ambitious $30,000 capital improvement campaign. The monies raised are needed for parking lot 12

re-paving and striping, fill and grading of the currently sinking property behind the hall (which may require upgrading the seawall), complete bathroom renovations, and kitchen upgrades. The underlying idea is to make Jaycee Hall into a facility the entire community can be proud of.

History of the Jaycee Hall Local CPA Robert Giacin, served as Chapter President the year Jaycee Hall was built. “As an organization, we needed to have a permanent location from which to build membership," said Giacin. "We were bouncing around from restaurant to restaurant, with no foundation from which we could improve the quality of our members.” He added that the move took some time however, to make an impact. “It was tough, very tough,” he noted. “While we had a home, we also had expenses and mortgage payments to make.” Giacin pledged his personal residence to get the $40,000 to build the building. "It was of great importance to me that the Jaycee Center (the building’s original name) was successful,” said Giacin.

Arthur Kail, the general contractor, was also instrumental in the Hall's construction. While there were still costs for materials and the sub-contractors Kail took no money for his services. Kail would follow Giacin as Chapter president (1966-67). Two years later, Kail met an untimely death while on a South American cruise. The building was renamed in his memory.

A Rocky Road Poor conditions in the early 1990s, sent Jaycee Hall and the Chapter in a downward spiral. Countless problems had arisen at that time, as a result of the roof caving in. "For the first time, since the Hall was built in 1966, the Chapter was in debt – having virtually no seed money from rentals and membership numbers had dwindled. But then the newly-elected 50th President Rodney Deveaux (1994-95) vowed to fight to keep the legacy and the Hall going," recalls Debra Gronvold, the Jaycee Hall's current Executive Director and Manager. "With the help of then H all Rental Manager Kevin Biederman and

Chapter Management VP John Gronvold, a plan was put into place to turn things around." Since Gronvold took over as Hall manager in 1999 an increase in hall rentals has brought in much-needed revenue to pay for the day-to-day expenses of operating. Today, the Jaycee hall is used as a venue for events from weddings and celebrations to baby showers and fashion shows. Their non-profit rentals include recurring meetings of Narcotics Anonymous, Girl Scouts, and the Broward County Fair. "Because of all of these events we need to keep up with the modernizing and upkeep of our building. After 50 years it deserves some TLC!,” said Gronvold. "And that’s why we are reaching out to our community by having our “Jaycee Hall Celebrates 50 years!” event." Proceeds from ad sales, ticket sales and sponsorship will help fund improvements to the community space, so they can not only assist the Jaycees but other groups in our community. The Celebration event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on May 21st, 2016 beginning with a Ribbon Cutting, Proclamation and Cocktail reception to follow. Tickets are $25, available thru EventBrite “Jaycee Hall Celebrates 50 years!” For event details, visit their Facebook event page or website www. hollywoodfljaycees.com. South Florida Wildlife Center to Hollywood: "Don't feed the ducks" car or harmed some other way, we receive entire orphaned litters.” Baby sea turtles and tortoises are also often struck by or crushed by automobiles while trying to cross roads along Hollywood Beach. The goal for any animal taken into care is to treat them, rehabilitate them and release them back to nature to live wild and free. Founded in 1969 by Beatrice Humphreys and a few volunteers as a home-based wild bird rehabilitation center in Fort Lauderdale, SFWC now has over 50 staff members, hundreds of active volunteers, and is one of the largest wildlife trauma hospital and rehabilitation facilities anywhere in the country.

Waddling across neighborhood streets with small broods of adorable toddlers following, Muscovy ducks form large flocks in lawns and landscaping, near lakes and ponds, leaving their droppings - up to 1/3 pound per day - everywhere. This makes them a bittersweet nuisance as duck lovers seem to be unintentionally creating the problem by feeding them. "If people do not feed the ducks, they will continue to move and forage,” states Schleuter, who advocates addling or shaking eggs, and adding contraceptives to the duck feed as opposed to shooting, killing or other inhumane means of ridding the ducks. Approximately 2,500 injured or orphaned ducks are admitted into SFWC annually. South Florida Wildlife Center (SFWC), receives between 12,000 and 14,000 patients annually, spanning over 250 species including squirrels, raccoons, baby alligators, snakes, swans, pelicans, iguanas, lizards, white ibis, ducks and more. These creatures are becoming sick, injured, or orphaned mostly due to interactions with humans. Vehicles, glass windows on buildings, poisons, free-roaming pets and intentional acts of human cruelty often pose a bigger threat than predators to local wildlife. “Most of the brown pelicans we admit are suffering from injuries caused by fishing hooks, mono-filament line, and other fishing debris," explains Sherry Schleuter, Executive Director for SFWC. "Birds fishing and swimming in our ocean are ingesting the hooks and line, or they step on or become entangled in such discarded items on piers and the like. Wading birds and shorebirds often suffer the same fate along the shorelines.”

Dania Beach Blvd. Bridge reopens

The Dania Beach Boulevard Bridge is now open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The bridge will be manually operated and open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily. The bridge will be closed each night to vehicle and pedestrian traffic with both spans placed in the upright position. The bridge is currently unable to operate under its own power. Until the machinery is fully functional the spans will be raised and lowered manually using two cranes. The cranes are placed in the center lanes, allowing one travel lane in each direction. The U.S. Coast Guard has authorized single leaf openings of the bridge to vessels every hour, on the hour, during the 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. window. Motorists should expect delays during the hourly openings as moving the spans manually takes approximately 15 minutes. The bridge has been closed to vehicles and pedestrians since January 12, 2016, as part of a $5.75 million mechanical, electrical and structural renovation. The project began in October 2015 and is expected to be completed in June. For more information about the project, please contact project Public Information Officer Casey Liening at 954-940-7585 or cliening@corradino.com.

Since joining Hollywood Hills High, student achievement has increased significantly in reading, math, science and Advanced Placement exams. The school has improved it state letter grade from a “D” to a “B.” Smith serves as lead administrator for the School Improvement Plan, Professional Learning Communities and the School Advisory Council. Her community involvement includes active support of the Broward Alliance of Caribbean Educators and the Urban League of Broward County.

DENTAL HEALTH UPDATE

The Top 7 Reasons People Avoid the Dentist

O

verall, about 65% of the people regularly go to the Dentist. That means that about 35% of the people are unaware of what’s going on in their mouths. This is more than unfortunate; it can be downright dangerous, because regular dental visits are a key component to overall health. So, why are people avoiding dental visits? The answer includes a wide range of reasons:

1. Cost. People cite high prices as a

major factor preventing them from getting regular checkups. 44% of the people say they are not visiting the dentist because they have no dental insurance. The truth is that routine dental checkups and hygiene visits are not that expensive. In our office there is an $89 dollar special offer for a full exam and a routine dental cleaning. If problems are caught early, the solutions are relatively easy, quick and inexpensive. While people wait until they get some sort of dental coverage, these conditions can turn into something a lot more expensive to fix, even with dental insurance coverage.

2. Dental anxiety. Many people

simply are afraid of the Dentist. This is perfectly understandable since the mouth is a very sensitive area. Fortunately, nowadays you can really

find Dentists that are caring and will listen to you. They will make a plan that is right for your individual needs and help you feel more comfortable. There is even a way to control anxiety by simply taking a pill and/or using the Laughing gas. Dental anesthetic, modern dental techniques and use of technology have come a long way in preventing pain and making the patients more comfortable. At the Dental Care Center of Hollywood we use extremely effective anesthetic techniques and we also use the electric drill, which reduces tremendously the uncomfortable noise of the traditional air drill.

3. Fear of needing dental work. Avoidance and denial are

strong human emotions. People simply don’t want to hear any bad news about their teeth or any dental problems they’ve acquired. If noticed early on, bad news will probably be minor things and easy to tackle. 4. Fear of instruments. The reason people fear bad news, is that treatment might be a painful or frightening procedure with scary dental instruments. Today, the use of technology has been a game changer in this regard. Dentistry is so advanced that there is little noise and discomfort.

5. Bad memories. Many people

fear dentistry because of past experiences with a “bad” Dentist. This can instill a very long lasting fear. Other people are just afraid simply because of stories they have heard. Take your time and find a skillful and knowledgeable Dentist that is caring and compassionate. Also make sure to find an office where the staff is nice and friendly. Most of the patient’s interaction actually happens to be with the Dental assistants and the Hygienists.

people, not just teeth. Today’s dentistry is completely different from the one I was practicing 20 years ago and I am sure it is a completely different and positive experience for the patients as well. If you have been putting off going to the Dentist, ask yourself “If not now, then when?”

6. Just too busy. Sometimes, people have a lot to do and too much going on in their lives. Once we skip a dental visit, it is out of our routine and we tend to forget about it. This is why progressive dental offices like the Dental Care Center of Hollywood, work so hard on reminding people of their appointments and setting up your visits. 7. Fear of getting lectured.

Nobody likes to be lectured about their dental health. And if you’ve been neglecting your brushing and flossing for some time, you might fear that a lecture is coming. At the Dental Care Center of Hollywood, we understand and care for people. We make people feel right at home by establishing successful relationships and allowing our patients to express their concerns. We care for

City faces $19 million budget deficit moving into fiscal year 2017 The City of Hollywood CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Commission and high level management came together for a Fiscal Retreat on the upcoming Fiscal Year 2017 budget. While the City has faced struggles in the past, the budgetary process is moving ahead. The City must have a balanced budget going into the new fiscal year. The City Finance Department has projected a $19 million budget deficit. The finance department is working with city staff and each department is looking for ways to reduce costs. Hollywood Commission votes against auditor item on Nov. ballot The Hollywood City CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Commission voted against placing a charter amendment on the November ballot to create an internal auditor position. The Commission voted in favor of the placing the position on the ballot during a previous meeting but reversed its decision. “This is not the right time and place. We can’t afford it,” said Commissioner Patricia Asseff. Members of the Commission considered the internal auditor position following problems with the hiring of temporary personnel. However, during a recent budget hearing, it was revealed the City is facing a $19 million budget shortfall, and the new position would mean more than $1 million in additional expenses for Hollywood. Asseff said that City staff led by City Manager Dr. Wazir Ishmael is looking for ways to cut expenses. Commissioner Kevin Biederman said he was concerned the charter amendment might confuse voters. He said the charter review board will evaluate and vet the charter and the possibility of an additional staff person. Commissioner Traci Callari said she believes the current city manager is running the City well and there is no need for an internal auditor.

There has been a loss of $2.6 million in chapter funds and the loss of the Seminole Compact of $900,000. The taxable value is forecast to increase five percent in Fiscal Year 2017 versus nine percent in Fiscal Year 2016 with an

increased contribution of $1.5 million Tax Revenue to the Beach CRA for a total of $16.6 million. Hollywood's Puppy Palace protesters speak out at commission meeting

Local animal activists PUBLISHER jennifer@hollywoodgazette.com let their voices be heard at a recent Hollywood Commission meeting to urge prohibition of the sale of so-called "puppy mill" dogs in retail pet stores in Hollywood, and switch to a humane business model. This is a first reading to move an ordinance forward, specifically targeting Hollywood's Puppy Palace, which has been regularly protested and involved in lawsuits for well over a decade. Judy Norford, the store's owner, believes the business has a right to sell the puppies. "We believe as an American you should have the choice of where you can adopt or buy a pet," Norford said. "We have worked with most of our breeders for decades. I have personally visited where our puppies come from. My requirements are even more stringent than the USDA. It’s important to me how our puppies are socialized from birth, they receive quality food and are given all necessary vaccines. " If an ordinance passes, Hollywood would be following a nationwide trend. To date, there are about 130 municipalities who have passed ordinances with 45 in Florida, in an effort to shut down puppy mills. Instead of selling dogs, 'puppyfriendly' pet stores have shifted their business model and offer adoptable shelter animals. Problems with Puppy Palace are not new. Protests outside the pet shop, dozens of lawsuits, scathing online reviews and Better Business Bureau filings have all accused the owner of selling sick puppies and buying them from puppy mills. Last year, a dog with a rare congenital condition, purchased from the Hollywood pet store, was reported by Local 10 News. But not all customers have had complaints. Shani Brenner has been a loyal customer since 1996. "I've gotten three puppies from Puppy Palace," said said. "Puppy Palace has been wonderful to my family over the years." Hallandale Beach City Commissioner Michele Lazarow purchased her dog from Puppy Palace in 2004. He was chronically ill for 10 years before he died in 2014. Lazarow is now part of a movement in the United States and Canada to ban the sale of commercially bred dogs and cats. The ban would not prohibit the sale of dogs and cats that have been rescued. Last month, she made a presentation at the request of Commissioner Dick Blattner at a Hollywood Commission meeting to

does not mean that the business is not a puppy mill, any more than a driver's license guarantees a good driver. In 2010, The Office of Inspector General released a report criticizing USDA's history of oversight of dog dealers under the Animal Welfare Act. Represented by lobbyist David Scott until January 2016, Kruse had not received one violation until the USDA inspector was replaced in January 2015. The new inspector found multiple violations on his first and second inspection. In July 2015, the new USDA inspector, accompanied by an Iowa state trooper, found no fewer than 13 dogs with visible veterinary issues at Stonehenge Kennels, including some with open, bleeding wounds. Two subsequent inspections uncovered even more veterinary issues at the facility, according to the Humane Society of the United States. On January 12, the USDA cracked down and suspended StoneHenge's B license, which allows it to sell its puppies and (also re-sell others' puppies) to pet stores and labs across the country, but only for 21 days. Despite violations uncovered during investigations by CAPS and dozens of complaints on RipOffReport.com, Norford defends their reputation. "Puppy Palace has worked with StoneHenge Kennels and Steve Kruse continuously for over a decade," she said in an email to Hollywood Gazette. "I find the organization and Mr. Kruse to be of the highest integrity. Although this facility was found to have minor violations stemming from a July 2015 review, the February 2016 follow-up review of the facility disposed of all findings. PHOTO: TARA NIEUWESTEEG

educate them on problems involving the industry. “In respect of the democratic process I want this on the agenda so all sides can weigh in. We welcome anyone who wants to discuss the issue,” Lazarow said. Having established locations in Hallandale, Hollywood and Boynton Beach, Judy Norford has been doing business in the State of Florida as Puppy Palace since 1994. The Hallandale and Boynton Beach locations are no longer operating.

'PUPPY MILL' CONNECTIONS Norford has stated that she only buys only from selected breeders that she inspects personally. "We don't take dogs from puppy mills,'' she declared in a SunSentinel interview. However, her ex-husband Steve Kruse, is a notorious large-scale breeder and the owner of StoneHenge Kennels in Iowa since 1986. Prior to StoneHenge, he operated one of the biggest hog farms in the southeastern part of the state. In a phone conversation in August of 2004, Kruse told a correspondent from the Companion Animal Protection Society (CAPS) that “a gal”, whom he later admitted is his wife, owns a pet store in Florida he sells to. He added that she drives up from Florida to pick up puppies in Illinois, Iowa, Arkansas and Missouri before going back to Florida. Often, pet store owners will assure prospective buyers all of their puppies come from "USDA-inspected facilities." But being USDA or government-inspected

A LONG HISTORY OF PROTESTS Puppy Palace owner's son, Mitchell Sunderland, describes his view from the "doggy dynasty" he grew up in. "Every few years, obese vegans living off welfare picket our flagship store in Hollywood,

Florida," he wrote. "Because they read articles online claiming we buy from puppy mills and execute the dogs that don’t sell—which is bizarre considering, as Mom likes to say, “Cute puppies are monaaay! Why would we kill something we could sell?”" Sunderland goes on to boast about the tactics espoused by the family to antagonize the activists. "Dad asked me to find friends willing to counter-protest PETA for cash and I was able to find about ten teens who would wave signs for drug money," he writes in a screed against the protesters who regularly picket Puppy Palace. "I really wish all of us who endured the protests outside of Puppy Palace show up Wednesday," urged Hollywood animal advocate Ana Campos. "If no one shows up, Puppy Palace wins. After the corruption behind interfering with the protests we all owe her a visit. You get two minutes to speak and speak your truth. People need to show up." Norford wants the community to know that "Puppy Palace has been a proud part of this community for more than 30 years." They have rescued animals from the streets, abandoned by their owners and "have even gone to Miami Dade/ Broward County Animal Services to save some." Recently they donated a puppy to a child with autism whose family was unable to afford it. "The child barely spoke to anyone before he received his puppy," said Norford. "The best outcome was that he was speaking full sentences within two days." The ordinance will come before the Commission for a second reading probably in May but a date has not been set. The Commission does not want pets being sold in Hollywood from large commercial breeders. Both sides continue urging supporters to come out and speak up. If you can't attend, you can e-mail your mayor and commissioners. "Although I feel that the hearts of the proponents are in the right place, moving this ordinance forward will not have the stated effects that they hope to achieve," said Norford. "However, I will go on to state that I hope that the proponents of this ordinance elect to meet with me, so that we can all work together on improving the treatment of animals throughout the world and if appropriate, a compromise ordinance providing further comfort that pets coming into our community for purchase, are well cared for."

Executive Corner, Anne Hotte, CEO / Executive Director The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce hosted its 21st Annual Expo Alfresco Hollywood’s Original Food & Wine Festival, in the ArtsPark on April 13th! Event goers were most impressed with the quality of restaurants and businesses in attendance! Of course the weather was a Chamber of Commerce day and everyone discovered incredible new places to eat, craft beers and new wines! The Leadership Hollywood class had set up the lawn with colorful blankets encouraging attendees to get comfortable while listening to music from the McArthur High School band, and savoring a beverage from the “Beer Garden” set up on the Amphitheater stage, decorated with historical panels depicting life in Hollywood in the 1920s in honor of Hollywood’s 90th birthday! A night to remember!

BOLD Justice works with Hollywood Police Department to issue civil citations to juveniles

Jennifer Ann Love | PUBLISHER jennifer@hollywoodgazette.com Tammy Soffer | DIRECTOR OF SALES tammy@hollywoodgazette.com Tina Stiles | ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER tina@hollywoodgazette.com BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com

"We support law enforcement and we respect the work that law enforcement officers are doing. But we want to help our young people."

Juveniles who get arrested for non-serious offenses can find themselves burdened with a criminal conviction that will prevent from joining the military, obtaining a job or qualifying for college scholarships. To help young people facing this potential problem, Broward Organized Leaders Doing Justice, known as BOLD Justice is encouraging law enforcement agencies to participate in a civil citation program. BOLD Justice has established a strong relationship with the Hollywood Police Department. The department is placing more juveniles who have been arrested into the civil citation program. “We have been working with the Hollywood Police Department to issue civil citations,” said Roland Abel, co-president of BOLD Justice. “Over the past 52 percent of eligible children have received civil citations. This is not where it could be or should be. We want it to be 100 percent.” Those juveniles who are placed

into the civil citation program are required to complete a program meant to discourage further misconduct. But they don’t have a criminal record that follows them for life. “We support law enforcement and we respect the work that law enforcement officers are doing. But we want to help our young people. If a child has been arrested for a non-serious offense, we don’t want them to have a criminal record that will impede their future,” said Rev. Michael Johnson, pastor of New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Hollywood. For more information, call 954463-2322.

McNicol Mddle School environmental students.

When Lara Ruddy’s environmental CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com students at McNicol Middle School found out the Wheelabrator symposium that they had been planning to attend was cancelled due to a reorganization, they were very disappointed. But they still wanted to have a symposium so they decided to organize one themselves. Members of the McNicol Middle School Growing Awareness In All (GAIA) the student environmental club will be hosting a symposium at the Florida Atlantic Campus in Davie on May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students from the environmental programs at Westglades Middle School and Crystal Lake Middle School will participate. The McNicol students will give a presentation on plastic pollution. They will focus on the significance of the damage caused by discarded plastic in the environment and what people can do about it. “We are concerned about the effects that plastic is having in the marine environment.

BY DAVID VOLZ

When plastic gets thrown in the ocean, it accumulates and goes up the food chain. It could potentially cause harm to people who eat fish,” said Ruddy. She is a science teacher at McNicol Middle School. She said what whales are starving to death because plastic they ingest blocks their digestive systems. Birds have been found feeding bits of discarded plastic to their young. “We want to make people aware of the problem of too much plastics and encourage people to reduce the amount of plastic they use and to reuse plastic if possible,” said Ruddy. Students have learned how to make hats and bags from plastic. The bags are strong and work well. They recently built and launched a boat made from plastic bottles. The students also made a presentation to the Kiwanis Club of Hollywood on their program. Cindy DeCastro, an eighth grade member of GAIA believes it is important to preserve the environment. “We are looking for creative ways to help the environment,” she said. “I enjoyed building a boat from plastic bottles.”

Hollywood Fire Lieutenant Humberto Fernandez helps Apollo Middle School History Fair winners advance

Anna’s

Housekeeping

BY ANTHONY J. VERA Hollywood Professional Firefighters came to the assistance of a group of Apollo Middle School kids, who had won Second Place in the Regional Broward County History Fair, which allowed them to move up and compete in the State History Fair competition in Tallahassee Florida. Unfortunately, the team didn’t have the funds needed for the trip to represent their school/ city, causing them to forfeit what they had worked so hard for. Enter Humberto Fernandez; a Lieutenant with Hollywood Fire Rescue, and a 15 year member of the Hollywood Professional Firefighters Association (HPFF), the Union that represents Hollywood’s Firefighters. When he heard that the students faced the possibility of forfeiting, he started raising the funds needed for these four

intrepid students to compete in the state’s capital. He went from Fire Station to Fire Station collecting money from the guys. He then approached the HPFF, which donated the rest of the money the students needed. It may not seem like a lot of money to raise, but it made the difference between these kids staying home, or going on to represent their school in the State Competition.

On Tuesday, April 27th, he presented the check to the school and the group of students who would go on to compete. “We wanted to show the students that despite whatever obstacles life may throw at you, that they can succeed when they work hard.” Said Mr. Fernandez as he addressed the student body, flanked by a delegation of the HPFF Executive Board members.

“We [Firefighters] do this because we love helping the community, whether it’s running emergency calls, or help those in matters such as this.” He concluded by encouraging the students to “pay it forward whenever they see someone in need."

RJ went from homeless to social services coordinator at Hollywood's Jubilee Center BY DARLENE PISTOCCHI

COMMUNITY INTEREST CORRESPONDENT darlene@hollywoodgazette.com

“When I first saw RJ about 4 years ago, he was standing in the soup line with his head down. He shuffled into the dining room and averted my eyes," says Joyce Curtis, former executive director of the Jubilee Center of South Broward, 2020 Scott Street in Hollywood. "I greeted him each day, learned his name and eventually found out he was homeless." “Homelessness is a very complicated matter,” says Curtis. "People find themselves on the streets for financial reasons, family crisis, health issues and even mental illness if left untreated. If the breadwinner loses his or her job the rent doesn't get paid, the electricity is turned off and pretty soon, if they are lucky enough to still have a car they live in it.” In an article from MarketWatch, dated January 31, most Americans are one paycheck away from the street and the National Coalition for the Homeless (demographics of Homelessness) reports 48 percent of individuals without families were found living without shelter. Through a series of life's events, RJ and his brother lost both their parents, their electricity and their home, leaving them only their car to sleep in."

LIVING IN THE CAR RJ was not open to talk about his situation and surely not open to talk about his 'sleeping spot.’ "Homeless people do not ever reveal where they are sleeping for many reasons but mostly for safety," says Curtis. "However, at Jubilee, it's easy to know when people, sometimes whole families, are living in their car. The inside looks like a moving apartment with stuff sticking out from everywhere.” Curtis eventually discovered RJ was selling his blood plasma because, "One day he desperately needed a ride to the blood bank," she said. Little by little he revealed how he was living, which places he

“He started spending time at Jubilee,” says Curtis. "After meal time ended, RJ helped shelve groceries and doing general cleanup work. He stopped drinking and showed up every morning at 7 a.m. It was about two years before I felt he trusted me and I soon recommended him for membership on the Jubilee board (Jubilee's by-laws require a homeless person a board representative). RJ became indispensable in managing our warehouse and is now an important member of our empowering staff.” Joyce and RJ have become great friends. “He is smart, wellread, a beautiful writer and like my second son. He is friends with my son who, at 58, is the same age and they share a love for the same music."
