ART AND ENTERTAINMENT

A&E in your city Kent Wallace's 'B-Scene'

BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT Hunkered down at Casa Pellegrino working against a deadline, story of my life (this place is a gem folks—Hollywood Beach)… Let’s start this ditty with a comment regarding the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood’s 3rd Saturday Art Walk. When I first arrived in Noyo Harbor, CA (between Mendocino and Fort Bragg) in 1993 (from NYC). I recall getting hired by both the North Coast News and OutLook magazine, writing for each, a column much as the one I’m penning now. At the time there was a moth-balled event called First Friday (an artwalk in blue-collar Fort Bragg). I kick started it. I did so by integrating artists and businesses (especially the galleries and antique shops). The City did nothing more than place beat-cops on the corners to direct folks—they were polite and accommodating. First Friday surged!!! Here in Hollywood, it seems, even with the concerted effort of the CRA (street musicians, an artisan market, fliers, press galore et al), nothing is good enough for some “What have you done for me lately” types… Let me tell you something kids—get up, get off it and work it. Expect nothing, do everything you can to self-promote—Capisce! I can’t say enough about the Art and Culture Center—they feed the flow of our creative river as a dedicated, diligent distributary. Starting in November (11/3 thru 12/13) they launch ARTastic Collaborations, a visual arts event for ages 6-10. “This fun, creative afternoon program builds concentration, increases confidence for speaking in front of others and much more…” Come on parents, guardians and angels alike—let’s get these kids motivated!

A shout-out to Jill Weisberg: My new favorite mural is the latest edition on Hollywood Boulevard and 21st Avenue. The artist is Fabio Onrack—this triptych presents three of the coolest cats ever: Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat… Gallery 2014 submits the works of Cuban artist Carlos Antonio Racano for your consideration. “This Subtle Chaos” opens on November 3rd. Gallery 2014 is ceaseless in their commitment to bringing and exhibiting fantastic, relevant and quality art to the Hip Hamlet of Hollywood. My heart is crushed due to the fact that Atelier 3 has closed. What a cornerstone of the “New” Hollywood and what a tragedy that some landlords sit on branches, like predatory birds, waiting for vulnerability.

I can tell you. The day will come when Hollywood becomes as majestic as Joseph Young envisioned. We have the people, the class, the talent and location, location, location… Just a heads up—Hurricane Irma did mighty damage to the roof of American Legion Post 92. And while “officially” Post 92 is a member’s only club (for veterans—and I’ve met the gamut from WWII to Afghanistan and every skirmish in-between), they are very much accommodating to anyone passing through their doors. And by the way, the weekly Wednesday night BBQ (Steak, Ribs or Chicken) is the best bargain in town—hands down! Please support the 92. In closing I quote Uncle Tony Cigars, “Break apples without malice…” Blessings one and all…

Krakatoa—Indonesian: “A Circus in your Mouth!”

BY KENT WALLACE ART & ENTERTAINMENT CORRESPONDENT

Krakatoa co-owner John Anthony moved from Virginia to South Florida some twenty-two years ago (settling in Miami). Four-years ago John ventured to Indonesia and that’s where he met his eventual business partner Abe Muis. “I had arranged my accommodations in advance and Abe was to be one of my hosts. We hit it off. It was like two old friends reconnecting after years apart—kismet. “Abe was situated in Bali where street food was everywhere. What was so amazing was that each cart had a specialty item— something so scrumptious that people would come just for that particular item. That phenomenon stayed with me…” And while Abe wasn’t a chef per se, he was a foodie, working at the Almond Villa as a personal concierge. His cooking devotion

came from the kitchen of his mother and grandmother. Abe eventually moved to the States to further his educational aspirations, enrolling in the Kaplan International English College in Miami. Needless to say, John became Abe’s host this time around. Three and a half years ago the duo opened their signature Krakatoa eatery at Hollywood’s Yellow-Green Farmer’s Market. “I did plenty of research before we took the plunge,” John says matter-of- factly. “My goal was to find something akin to the Southeast Asian local markets, somewhere inclusive of every aspect of food while combining that much needed social climate. “I suspect I canvassed no less than 30 markets between South Miami and Palm Beach. When I found the Yellow-Green Farmer’s Market the search ended!” There is no doubt Yellow-Green is a cornucopia of aesthetics—from food, to crafts and art—the whole shebang.

“That’s the vibe we’ve created in our new brick-and- mortar space in Hollywood (1910 Hollywood Blvd.) We’ve created an eclectic, authentic Indonesian space for our friends—both old and new alike.” The menu at Krakatoa is varied, something for everyone, whether vegetarian or carnivore, a palette of color, taste and flavor. As John so poignantly states, “We create a circus in your mouth!” The Hip Hamlet of Hollywood just got a lava over-flow of goodness-gracious, lip smacking, tongue tangy love…

Two more building façades in Downtown Hollywood have been transformed into eye-catching works of art with the creation of stunning murals by three South Florida artists. A mural installation recently completed at 115 N. 21st Ave. and a second one started Oct. 17 at 2050 Hollywood Blvd. are the latest in a series of outdoor works by established local contemporary artists that currently adorn 24 downtown properties between 21st Avenue and U.S. 1. Launched in August 2012 by the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the mission of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP) is to beautify and add culture to the downtown area one wall at a time. The first of the two new murals was created by South Beach-based Yuhmi Collective, husband-and-wife art duo Victor and Michelle Vasquez, who were captivated by Hollywood founder Joseph Young’s “Dream City” vision and the founding story of how “Hollywood by the Sea” was created and transformed through the years. The colorful pastel-hued mural depicts a whimsical undersea scene featuring a mermaid and other sea creatures and reflects the couple’s East Asian influence. The latest mural, the vision of Miami muralist and fine-art painter Fabio Onrack, features realistic black-and-white portraits of renowned artists Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Onrack’s work reflects his artistic passion for painting people and places and his exploratory style of painting three-dimensional elements with expressive movement and emotion. “I am really excited to have two new

Honor Flights

One Last Mission Honoring Those Who Have Served ing. A conversation ensued, and he was asked if he’d like to get involved. “Suddenly, I heard my name,” he recounted, and saw a former client and old friend who had been a WWII bomber pilot. He was from Waco, TX and there with an Honor Flight group. The friend appealed to him to take on opening a branch in the south Florida region. “For a month, I got calls every few days,” he recalled. “So finally I got some people together and we decided to do it. “That old friend died a month later,” he said. “I honor him with every flight.”

BY ROBIN KERR DRULARD MANAGING EDITOR robin@hollywoodgazette.com

Shortly after I moved to Hollywood to be closer to my aging father, he experienced what he said was “one of the greatest days my life”, when he traveled to Washington D.C. on an “Honor Flight”, where he was lauded and celebrated all day for being a WWII veteran. “That’s exactly the response we love to hear,” said Rick Asper, chairman of Honor Flight South Florida, formed four years ago to focus on finding and honoring vets from the tri-county area from Broward to Monroe. “It’s truly a labor of love for us, and especially for the WWII vets, who are quickly diminishing, it’s something we’re really focusing on these days.” On their day as the guest of the Honor Flight Network, the vets are flown on a charter flight, each with their own escort (their “guardian”, more on that later), taken to the military monuments throughout D.C. and at every point, greeted, cheered for, lauded with compliments, thanks and applause, and completely treated like the heroes they are, each for whatever piece they provided to keep America the land of the free and home of the brave. What an Idea! The Honor Flight program was conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and Retired Air Force Captain, who worked for the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. After years of working with WWII vets, it became clear to him that, 16

November 2017

while most of them yearned to visit Washington and see the WWII Memorial, it simply wasn’t financially or physically feasible for most these men and women, many now elderly, to make the journey. Earl was also a private pilot, so he began inviting some of his veteran patients to fly to D.C. with him. It was so rewarding, for both the vets and for him, that he began enrolling other pilots in his aero club to join him. In January of 2005, Honor Flight was born. The first flight took to the air in May of 2005. Six small planes flew 12 veterans to visit the WW II Memorial. Soon, commercial aircraft became necessary to accommodate more veterans. Needless to say, the results were awe-inspiring for both the vets and the pilots. By the end of the first year, Honor Flight had transported 137 WWII veterans to their memorial.

Word Spreads The mission and ideals of the program began to spread to other cities and states and the program expanded. By 2006, commercial flights were exclusively used due to the increasing number of interested veterans as well as other things like need for wheelchairs, and adverse weather conditions which prohibited small aircraft from participating on a regular schedule. Rick Asper joined the Honor Flight Network in 2013 and with his group of co-founders, Honor Flight South Florida was formed. Previously, the flights for this region had been handled out of another hub in Stuart. A Vietnam era Army veteran himself, Rick was in D.C. on business several times a year, and when there, he often visited the war memorials. One day, at Arlington national cemetery, he saw a line up of buses before the changing of the guard and walked over to see what was happen-

Honor Flights South Florida Takes Off Honor Flight South Florida was officially started in 2013 and has run 13 flights since then, approximately three to four per year with about 75 honorees per flight. In preparation for their flights, each vet is assigned a “Guardian”, who meets them prior to the flight to get to know them, and escorts them on a one-to-one basis throughout the entire day. The vets are picked up by their guardian, and driven to the airport where they board a charter flight filled with other vets, as often as possible from the same war. On most fights, any able-bodied volunteer can be a guardian. Often, they are active duty military, reservists or family. However, on one flight a year, the Guardians are “Elite Guardians” -- Vietnam vets and honorees as well -- which give HFSF a chance to double the amount of honorees on the flight. Honor Flights started with WWII Vets, and have now added Korean War

this year, they were “delighted to be the official charity” of the Fort Lauderdale Small Boat Club, and the recipient of funds from several generous restaurant events in the three counties. Finally, HFSF continues on its quest to bring every living veteran to Washington to see their memorial and experience their day of honor. “It is our goal to have as many of them as possible saying that it was one of the best days of their lives,” stated Rick.

as well as vets from other conflicts who may be older or in poor health. They are picked up and escorted by the same person all day, and brought home at night. “We’re losing our WWII vets at an alarming rate, and it’s incredibly sad for us,” said Rick, “especially when they’re on our waiting list. We do our best to get them on the flights in age order, and it’ll still be a while before we run out of WWII and Korean War vets.” There is a waiting list and we always try to get our vets onto the first possible flight.” The Honor Flight Network has already flown over 200,000 men and women from WWII. And since its inception four years ago, Honor Flight South Florida has flown nearly 1000 men and women. But the fact is, Honor Flight South Florida has only enough money left to do three or four more flights if everything remains as it is. HFSF Moves Into the Future Most charities are on a constant search for money. But Honor Flight South Florida is now on an aggressive campaign for not only funds, but also for volunteers and for more participants. “Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organization,” said Rick. “It takes a lot of work to honor and respect our nation’s heroes.” For volunteers, “We are blessed with hundreds of people who give us a lot of time and effort to make these missions happen,” Rick said proudly. “There are so many opportunities to make a difference.” There are meeting every few weeks, including the board of directors and the various committees. Meetings of course multiply as flight dates approach. Fundraising efforts include “everything we can think of” he said, explaining that costs for each flight add up to about $100,000. Flights take place in the spring and the fall, in consideration of the comfort

of the vets, with the goal of four flights, and 300 vets, per year from South Florida, one of the largest geographical territories in the organization. The time between flights is used for fundraising. HFSF works with the Broward school district schools service clubs

as well as other clubs such as Kiwanis, Lions, American Legion, VFW, Vietnam Vets, and other generous service organizations, which hold events and galas, sometimes with military themes, to raise funds for them. Thinking out of the box, he noted that, for example,

The Homecoming Hollywood Gazette Publisher Jennifer Love and I had the “honor” ourselves to attend the homecoming of the most recent South Florida Honor Flight. Over 1000 people turned out at FLL to welcome the flight home on a Saturday night. Many of them told me that they come to every homecoming. From newborn babies swaddled in red, white and blue to seniors and vets in their own “honor chairs”, uniformed bands and military presence, Boy and Girl Scouts, teens there of their own volition, people holding signs and banners and handwritten notes and flowers, we all cheered and gave thanks for the service these men and women provided. Lots of smiles, lots of tears, lots of hugs and handshakes, and if you’re getting chills and a little teary….well, so am I, just recalling it. The best, for me, was a little girl, maybe four or five, who insisted on hugging every person that came by. Priceless. For everyone. It was an incredible experience. My Daddy would be proud. If you’d like to get involved with Honor Flight South Florida, as a volunteer, an honoree, a guardian, a fundraiser or a supporter, please go to their website at www.HonorFlightSouthFlorida.org or give them a call on 855 FLY 1 VET (855-359-1838) I promise you an experience that will make a difference, for others, and for you.

Raul Despian opens new State Farm office in West Hollywood ‘to help life go right’

N

BY DAVID VOLZ | CORRESPONDENT

o one understands the real life consequences of being uninsured, better than Raul Despian. When Despian was in his late teens, his mother died unexpecedly. In addition to the grief he experienced losing her, he was suddenly faced with the reality of being on his own at age 18. Family members went their separate ways and life was complicated in countless ways that could have been avoided with a life insurance policy. The struggles Despian endured as a young man drove home the importance of establishing a good insurance plan. “One thing I love about what I do is helping people feel better protected,” says Despian. As time went on, he has achieved success, become a State Farm agent, and recently celebrated the opening of his own State Farm office at 8560 Stirling Road in Hollywood. “My goal is to serve the community by providing for its insurance needs,” said Despian. “I still remember seeing my family break apart and being on my own at 18 because we did not have insurance protection.” Despian is focusing on providing auto, life and homeowners insurance. “I can help you protect your family’s financial future in minutes,” he states with confidence. He believes it's important people have insurance for protection against unexpected life problems such as disability, the premature death of a family provider, or an automobile accident that results in severe injuries. Despian has five team members at this office with many years of experi-

ence. The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce helped him celebrate the recent opening with a ribbon cutting event.

“We have established great relationships with our community and our customers. Fulfilling our customer’s insurance and financial needs is our number one goal. We strive for the top quality service a customer can ever experience at an insurance agency.” Originally from Spain, Despian moved to South Florida from North Carolina in 1991 and has been happy to call South Florida home ever since. After studying Education at Miami-Dade College, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from FIU in 2005 and proceeded to work with State Farm in claims and agency. Passionate about helping people, the move to agent was a natural fit. With encouragement from friends and neigh-

bors, Despian started the Raul Despian State Farm Agency in July, 2017. "This is a lifelong dream come true for me. And I love the location," he added. Grateful for an amazing group of neighborhood friends, Despian makes sure that new customers are welcomed in a way that has become customary in South Florida. He's fostered friendships with longtime customers in the community as well. “I have known Raul Despian for over 20 years! He is a true gentleman with a great heart and always does the right thing,” says Mike DiGiacomo. “He is a hard worker and always does his best to find solutions for your insurance needs.” “My vision as an agent is to be an insurance professional whose actions are driven by keeping customers’ best interest as my primary goal," said Despian. "My staff will treat all my customers in a caring, friendly, and professional manner." Despian has a LUTCF Life designation from the American College and the National Association of Insurance & Financial Services. He has also served on Miami’s NAIFA Board of Directors. He’s a member of the Greater Hollywood and the Davie Cooper City Chambers of Commerce. In his free time, Raul loves to go to the gym with his wife Gail. The Raul Despian State Farm Agency is located at 8560 Stirling Road, Suite 102 in Hollywood, Florida 33024. They provide all lines of insurance and financial services, such as auto, home, business, renters, life, health, bank, retirement planning and much more. Union Institute & University Florida Academic Center honors veterans at Veterans Remembrance Breakfast Veterans are at the heart of the Union Institute & University Veterans in Union program founded in 2015. The program is designed to recognize and honor the sacrifices made through our veterans’ service to our country, and commit to their success through supplemental grant funding in the form of education and customized veterans’ services. The Veterans in Union program offers a three-term $7,500 living allowance stipend ($2,500 per term) for honorably discharged veterans. The stipend is a subsidy to match the VA MHA received by distance education students. This funding makes the use of VA benefits at Union comparable to use at a residential college. The stipend assistance is available for three fulltime semesters during the first year of the academic program.

“There is no more noble cause than to take time to remember those who have sacrificed in behalf of this nation over many, many years. Women and men who serve this nation both at home and around the world deserve our deepest respect and fondest regards for their sacrifices.”

On Friday, November 10 from 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m, Union Institute & University Florida Academic Center will remember our veterans with a recognition breakfast to showcase our appreciation for everything veterans have done, and continue to do for our country. Find your inner Picasso at Creation Station, now open in Hollywood If you love art and painting or just want to relax while expressing yourself creatively, Creation Station is for you. Located at 5804 Stirling Road in the Poinciana Plaza in Hollywood, this hip, unique art studio is sure to bring out your inner Picasso. “I have always loved art and creating things,” shares owner and founder Karen Gani. “And I felt there was a lack of ways for kids to get creative in the west Hollywood area.” Guided by her passion for art, Gani was inspired to open Creation Station offering classes in canvas painting, wine glass painting as well as techniques in ceramic painting for kids and adults. And even though they’ve only been open a few months, locals are already responsing favorably. “ It’s good place to paint ceramics, and my three kids loved it. It’s got a homey feel. Not just for kids. They have stuff for grown ups,” said Benny, a recent customer from Hollywood. HOW IT WORKS

With ceramics, people come in and pick a piece and choose their glazes. “We assist them in this process, explains Gani. “They paint three layers of each color for the full effect and then

company events and more. There are no limitations. “We have a private party room with 6 TV screens and a projector for added fun and music, of course, to get the party started.” The party room is a few doors away in the same center and a party assistant is included for each party. Booking should be done at least 3 weeks to one month in All materials from paints to are included in your advance. visit as well as firing and glazing at no extra charge as well.

we glaze the pieces and put them in our special kiln to be baked.” Once the work is done, the customer is called to pick up their finished masterpiece. For canvas art, they can walk in and pick a piece they would like to work on. “We help guide them on each step,” explains Gani. “They can also come paint the piece in a class with group guided instruction and take it home right away.” Gani recalls her experiences painting when she was younger. “It was always a memorable experience for me. I was upset that we had to travel far just to paint and have fun. There is also no place to just sit

back and unwind from a long day. This is the perfect outlet to do that.” There are never any ‘sitting fees’ commonly found in most studios. And mini kid classes are offered for parents to drop off their children to have fun and get creative. PARTY TIME

Creation Station is the place to party for aspiring artists of all ages. Gani notes, “Every child gets a T-shirt with our studio logo on it and their friends signatures written on them at the party as a gift.” Creation Station also caters to ladies nights, bridal showers, baby showers, fundraisers,

WHAT MAKES CREATION STATION UNIQUE

“Most places charge a fee to paint and don’t allow you to pour your own paint,” says Gani. “Plus, we have more Judaica items than any other ceramic studio in town. We also offer snacks and drinks to purchase, including cappuccino, hot chocolate and more. We make you feel at home.” Class info and registration is online. Group classes are recommended for the ultimate experience and you can walk in anytime. No appointments are necessary. First time customers can even get 10% off when they mention Hollywood Gazette. HEALTHCARE

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital celebrates 25 years of world-class healthcare and community impact The deal that led to an American icon sharing his name with what has become one of the nation’s premier pediatric healthcare facilities was sealed the old-fashioned way, with a promise and handshake. The promise, made by then Memorial Healthcare System President & CEO Frank V. Sacco to Joe DiMaggio, was that no child would ever be denied care because his or her family was unable to pay. That was all the very private “Yankee Clipper” needed to hear to endorse a very public use of his name and image. The baseball Hall of Famer then took things a step further after that, cutting the ribbon on the newlychristened Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital (JDCH). In the 25 years since, JDCH has grown from a few units on a single floor at Hollywood’s Memorial Regional Hospital to the largest pediatric hospital serving Broward, Palm Beach, and northern Miami-Dade counties. A freestanding facility specially designed to meet the needs of children and fami-

lies opened in 2011 and today features 650 physicians, 226 licensed beds, seven operating rooms, and an entire floor dedicated to oncology. Rehabilitation, dialysis, emergency care, and a cardiac surgery program that has performed 36 heart transplants in less than seven years are just a few of the other areas of specialization. “We’re a quaternary care facility, meaning we treat some of the most complex and critical clinical conditions,” said Chantal Leconte, FACHE, administrator and chief executive officer at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. “We’ve

grown in the last 25 years into a pediatric healthcare destination that’s known for clinical expertise, advanced technology, and a patient and family-centered approach to care.” Moving forward, a pediatric kidney transplant program will soon launch and a Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital specialty practice will open in Wellington in 2018. It will be the hospital’s third physician practice in Palm Beach County. Additionally, there are plans to double the size of the current Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, eventually making it an eight-story building. Memorial Healthcare System administrators believe the move will further increase patient access to high-level, pediatric healthcare in South Florida, which has been a guiding principle for the past 25 years. And, all the kids Joe DiMaggio was so concerned about being cared for? Promise kept.

Confederate streets in Hollywood likely to be renamed Hope, Liberty and Freedom

BY DAVID VOLZ

During a dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com recent workshop, members of the Hollywood Commission made a tentative decision to rename Lee Street to Liberty Street; Forrest Street to Freedom Street and Hood Street to Hope Street. This follows a long period of controversy over street signs named after Confederate leaders. The next step for the commission is to have a resolution proposing these names for the streets. Hollywood city staff is working through the details of this resolution and it will be placed on an upcoming agenda. Not everyone was satisfied with the decision. According to Wendy King, Take Down Slavery Symbols of Hollywood and the Black Lives Matter Alliance Broward are disappointed in CORRESPONDENT

the results of the meeting, known as the Street Renaming Workshop took place. They wanted the streets named after people who have campaigned for African-American equality. Some of the names members of the organization wanted included Eula Street to honor Eula Johnson, who helped de-segregate Broward County beaches and Bethune Street after Mary McLeod Bethune, a pioneer in education. Other names suggested included Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. The name changes represent years of effort by Hollywood resident Benjamin Israel. He has worked tirelessly for the change often alone. Eventually he gained support from others in the community and finally gained the support of Broward County political leaders.

She was a beloved mother and grandmother. BY DAVID VOLZ

Folks from all walks of life came together at Nova dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com Southeastern University to participate in this year’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sat. Oct. 21. Many who participated in the 3.1 mile walk have lost family members to Alzheimer’s or are caring for someone with the disease. “My father died of Alzheimer’s,” Ken Hetlage, executive vice president of Memorial Healthcare System said. “I’m here to encourage people to stay active, eat healthy and keep the mind active.” Karen Harrington, a commissioner for the South Broward Hospital District said, “I want to bring awareness about this disease. It is a difficult journey for family members who must care for those with Alzheimer’s,” she said. “I want to prevent Alzheimer’s. I encourage people to stay active and keep their brains active,” Hilary Glazer, M.D., a brain health and memory neurologist at the Memorial Neuroscience Institute said. “I work with people who have Alzheimer’s and we can help them CORRESPONDENT

better if we diagnose it early. If they have mild Alzheimer’s we help them deal with it as a chronic condition.” Glazer is helping the mother of Miriam Soto, who participated in the Walk. She visited with Glazer before going on the walk. “I love being part of this walk and I want to support the effort to end Alzheimer’s,” she said. Elizabeth Burchers is executive director of the Life Care Center at Inverrary which cares for people with Alzheimer’s. She was proud to participate. Rosemary Monaco walked in support of her father who has Alzheimer’s and is age 91. “He is a World War II veteran and is fighting Alzheimer’s,” she added. And while the fight against Alzheimer’s is serious issue, those who came could have some fun. Nova Southeastern University and Florida Panthers cheerleaders performed and teams set up tents and picnics after the Walk. People could enjoy hot dogs and bagels with live entertainment. It was an opportunity for family and friends to have some quality time together.
