Catch Lung Cancer Early. Get Screened Now. by L. Kenneth Barnett Commissioner South Broward Hospital District d.b.a. Memorial Healthcare System
N
ovember is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month, and it’s worth noting that 2014 has brought some encouraging news. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that nearly twice as many homes in the United States are smoke-free — 83 percent, compared with 43 percent of households 20 years ago. Although the CDC celebrated the results, there was a note of caution: Too many people still face the dangers of second-hand smoke. In fact, exposure to second-hand smoke still kills more than 40,000 Americans every year. That’s why it’s so important to remain vigilant about urging our loved ones and friends to kick the habit — and be assertive about identifying, diagnosing and treating lung cancer early, before it has a chance to progress.
With such an outstanding resource right here in our own backyard, there’s no reason not to take advantage of Memorial Cancer Institute for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. And to make getting screened for lung cancer even easier, Memorial has taken two important steps: First, lung CT scans are a covered benefit for Memorial employees and their dependents through Memorial Health Network. Second, for the community, Memorial is offering lung CT scans for just $99.* You are eligible for this special screening offer if you are between the ages of 55 and 74, currently smoke or quit smoking in the last 15 years, and have no severe co-morbidities that would inhibit treatment. All you need to do is get a written prescription from your physician and have the CT scan performed at a Memorial facility. If you or someone you know is at risk, Memorial Cancer Institute makes it easy to join the thousands of others who are now getting screened across the country. Despite much progress, lung cancer is still the nation’s secondmost commonly diagnosed cancer in both men and women. But with Memorial Cancer Institute — Broward County’s leading cancer program — working every day to prevent, detect and treat lung cancer, we can all breathe a little easier.
As a member of the Board of Commissioners of the South Broward Hospital District, I’m proud that Memorial Healthcare System and Memorial Cancer Institute are taking the lead in this effort. Memorial Cancer Institute offers lung cancer patients and their families the full range of treatments — including leadingedge surgery, chemotherapy and radiation oncology, in addition to medication management therapy, psychological and social services, and an Image Recovery Center that works to help patients look and feel their best. Throughout their care, patients at Memorial Cancer Institute enjoy the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of professionals who are dedicated solely to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. Memorial’s experts work side-by-side with patients and families to do whatever it takes to beat a cancer diagnosis. This team includes Lung Cancer Navigators, who help patients find their way through the healthcare system — scheduling appointments quickly and efficiently, assisting with insurance or payment issues, and answering questions at every step. Earlier this year, Memorial Cancer Institute partnered with the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation to improve individualized standards of care for lung cancer patients in the community hospital setting. The Foundation recognized Memorial Cancer Institute as one of its 360 Community Hospital Centers of Excellence and for its outstanding clinical care and research, quality outcomes and survivorship rates.

Hollywood’s red light camera program faces new scrutiny The Fourth CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com District Court of Appeal (DCA) ruled that under Florida law, a private contractor could not issue a traffic citation to a motorist. Hollywood has a contract with American Traffic Solutions to run its red light camera program. The case involving Hollywood was filed by Eric Arem who was issued a traffic citation after a camera showed that he had run a red light in Hollywood. The Hollywood City Commission is now in the process of determining what its next step will be. This ruling doesn’t just impact Hollywood, it impacts all of the cities in Florida that contract with American Traffic Solutions for red light traffic cameras. The Ruling was just recently issued, so the Commission will be meeting to determine if it will ask the 4th DCA to re-hear the case again or if the City will petition the Florida Supreme Court to consider the BY DAVID VOLZ
issue, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. The red light camera program has been a beneficial traffic safety program in the City of Hollywood helping to reduce serious injury accidents and it has been a cost effective program. If this ruling stands, the City will have to look at what it would cost to run this program with more police officers reviewing infractions and whether it’s a program Hollywood can continue to afford, according to Hussey. The Commission will discuss its next steps and make a decision about whether to continue issuing citations.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Hollywood hopes to get a Tri-Rail Coastal Link Station Downtown near Hollywood Blvd. The City of Hollywood is hoping CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com that the Tri-Rail Coastal Link will place one its stations in the City. “We would like to be one of the first train stations for the Coastal Link and we believe Hollywood would be a good place to locate a train station,” said Raelin Storey, spokesperson for Hollywood. This commuter train service would connect up the downtowns of coastal South Florida and Hollywood is one of the cities that is being considered for a train station to be located in Downtown Hollywood on 21st Avenue and Taylor Street. “Hollywood is an ideal location for a stop because the rail corridor is immediately adjacent to our historic downtown. The land use is already in place for a regional activity center. This creates a very walkable, transit and pedestrian friendly stop. There is existing residential with 600 more units planned along with existing retail and office development all within a one fourth mile of this proposed stop,’ said Susan Goldberg, deputy director of the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).
BY DAVID VOLZ
Also there is discussion underway for the expansion of the existing higher education facility, Barry University, which will further the area’s appeal for creating a true transitoriented development. The unique character and historic identity of Downtown Hollywood will draw people to get off the train at the Hollywood Boulevard Station and patronize local shops, galleries and restaurants. The City hopes the convenience of nearby transit will spur additional office and retail redevelopment. In the section along Dixie Highway, a mixed use corridor is envisioned with retail, office and residential within the same building. Increased daytime traffic would help support successful redevelopment in the area. Mayor Peter Bober believes a train station is important to Hollywood. “This will reduce car trips, encourage the redevelopment of Downtown Hollywood and will be great for the City,” he said. The effort to bring a commuter train service to the FEC corridor is being led by the Florida Department of Transportation in conjunction with the South Florida Regional Transit Authority and partnering agencies: Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach
Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), the Southeast Florida Transportation Council (SEFTC), and the South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils. This commuter train service would connect up the downtowns of coastal South Florida, according to Goldberg. The City of Hollywood and Hollywood CRA hired Kimley Horn and Associates to develop “Complete Streets” designs for several key corridors in Hollywood including the FEC corridor from Sheridan Street to Pembroke Road. This design allowed the CRA to apply for the county to designate this a “Context Sensitive Corridor,” which is a designation that recognizes that this is a roadway that should be shared by all forms of transportation: mass transit, pedestrian, vehicular, bicycle. It also recognizes that this roadway is currently designed for a higher capacity of traffic than it actually has. This creates flexibility when it comes to recreating this roadway, according to Goldberg. The Tri-Rail Coastal Link project is ready to move into the project development stage. This is expected to happen as soon as November or December of 2014. Project development is expected to take two years,
this will be when all of the initial station locations are finalized, environmental assessments are done and options for cost sharing are developed. The work done in the project development allows the FDOT, SFRTA to purse federal “new start” funding to help pay for the construction of train stations, parking areas, etc. This transit project would be competing with transit projects around the country for these federal dollars. Typically the funding breaks down, 50% federal, 25% state, 25% local; county and city. Initial market analysis of the benefit of a stop to the City of Hollywood shows that a train station in Downtown Hollywood would generate between $1.3 and $1.5 million dollars in added property tax value alone. “It’s important to keep in mind that this is long term vision for this corridor, planning and implementation (if Hollywood is selected for an initial stop) is several years away. Still, cities have to be a part of the planning now, if they want to receive funding and be part of the project later,” said Goldberg.

Beachgoers traveling by wheelchair or stroller will soon have greater access to Hollywood Beach with the installation in November of four additional Mobi-Mats, semi-permanent blue plastic ADA-compliant pathways that lead toward the Atlantic Ocean. The first of these new mats will be installed at 2 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 6 at Keating Park at Magnolia Terrace. Keating Park also offers ADA-compliant restrooms and is a stop for the City of Hollywood’s ADA-accessible Hollywood Trolley, making a beach excursion more convenient for all visitors, whether they visit on wheels or on foot. The addition of three more Mob-Mats – at Oregon Street, Harrison Street and Carolina Street near the Hollywood Beach Marriott – will bring the total number of beach pathways to eight. In addition to Magnolia Terrace, the Harrison Street and Carolina Street locations are also Hollywood Trolley stops. The City of Hollywood was a pioneer in the state of Florida in February 2009, installing four 6-foot-wide Mobi-Mats of varying lengths within the city’s Central Business District at Connecticut Street,
Johnson Street, New York Street and Tyler Street. The mats have been extremely popular with wheelchair users, parents pushing strollers and barefoot beachgoers seeking relief from the hot sand. The City of Hollywood was among the first in Florida to obtain authorization from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to install its first four beach accessways. The lightweight Mobi-Mat material was selected for its easy installation, fast removal prior to a storm event, reliable traction and costeffectiveness. The mats, which are funded by the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and supplied by Coastal System, require a Coastal Construction Control Line permit and must be determined to pose no threat to sea turtles during the turtle-nesting season.
“I think the Mobi-Mats are a practical and minimally intrusive way to accommodate beach access for all users with a measure that does not impact marine turtle nesting,” said Jorge Camejo, Executive Director of the CRA. Kimberly Stefanski, Planning and Economic Development Coordinator for the CRA, added, “It’s very exciting that we will soon be doubling the number of Mobi-Mats on Hollywood Beach and expanding the coverage area to accommodate residents and visitors in multiple areas of the city.”
The Hollywood Trolley offers convenient, affordable transportation for $1 per person per ride and is free for children ages 5 and younger. The trolley departs approximately every 30 minutes from more than a dozen beach and downtown locations, and operates from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Landmark 70-Year-Old Downtown Hollywood Business Gets Hip Makeover BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
Melina’s Lingerie Shoppe, a landmark 70-year-old business in Downtown Hollywood known for the intimately attired and interestingly styled mannequins in its window displays, is sporting a cool new look as part of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP). Miami artist Diana Contreras, aka Didi Rok, started lending her creative touch to the storefront window background in October, including a live painting event at Melina’s Lingerie Shoppe during the monthly ArtWalk
event on Oct. 18. The two murals, which are approximately 20 feet long and 8 feet high each and are visible from the sidewalk, depict two bikini-clad bathing beauties lounging on the beach. Contreras, who has created several murals throughout South Florida, has a unique style that mixes classical portraiture with illustration and street art. The medium is latex and acrylic paints, with all art supplies for the project provided by Liquitex, a company dedicated to art education and community outreach programs. The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project was launched in August 2012 and currently includes 11 other murals on building facades throughout the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment

district. “I’m very honored to be part of this because all of the artists who have created murals in Downtown Hollywood are world-renowned and people I admire,” Contreras said. Melina’s Lingerie proprietor Elsie Johns, who has owned the family business at 2010 Hollywood Blvd. for the past half century, gave her input for the mural design, requesting a “bare beach scene” and her preferred hair color for the two bathing beauties. “We’re a blonde family,” Johns said, citing her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter. She said she’s very happy for her shop to be part of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project. “It’s beautiful. It brightens up the whole town,” Johns
said. Contreras said Downtown Hollywood is quickly establishing itself as a true street art community. “The City is doing a very good job of getting quality artists involved,” she said. “I think that the mural program is making Downtown Hollywood more attractive to new businesses and young people.” For more information on Hollywood’s Downtown and Beach districts, including the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, ArtWalk or other events, call the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-924-2980 or visit www. hollywoodcra.org.
Hollywood pensions take more of city budget Pensions continue to take a CORRESPONDENT larger portion of the dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com City of Hollywood’s budget. The City’s pension contributions as a percentage of the General Fund have increased from 7.3 percent in 2003 to 19.6 percent in 2013. The City’s pension contributions as a percentage of property taxes have grown from 19.6 percent in 2003 to 50.3 percent in 2013. The growth in the City’s required pension contributions is squeezing out spending in other areas. This was discussed during the final budget hearing. Under normal economic conditions, all adjustments to the pension must be collectively bargained with the three unions representing the majority of City employees. These include the PBA, IAFF and AFSCME. Now, the City is in negotiations with both the police (PBA) and fire (IAFF) unions. The City is not proposing any reductions to pension benefits in those negotiations, according to Joann Hussey, spokesperson for the City of Hollywood. pension costs for the year. The City budgets for this cost as part of the budget process each year. The funding for the Fire and Police pension plans comes entirely from property tax revenue within the City’s General Fund. The funding for the General Employees’ pension plan is split based on the composition of the active members, with approximately 60 percent coming from property tax revenue in the General Fund and approximately 40 percent come from Enterprise fund revenues. Some of the City’s employees, such as utility workers and parking staff are paid for from Enterprise funds. Enterprise funds are user fees that cover the cost of the services rather than tax dollars. The City is not considering changing from a defined benefit plan to a defined contribution plan. Retirement benefits are just one part of the City’s overall benefit package. The City is seeking well-qualified employees and is constantly evaluating its pay and benefit offerings in an effort to ensure they are affordable and competitive. “The goal of the City Manager has been to create a great environment to work in with pay and benefits that put Hollywood in the solid middle when you look at comparable cities,” said Hussey.

City of Hollywood agrees to purchase Cosac homeless shelter BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT
dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com
The Hollywood Commission unanimously agreed to purchase the Cosac properties and properties owned by Sean Cononie on October 15. The City of Hollywood will spend about $4.8 million on the entire deal. The main property involves at homeless shelter 1203 North Federal Highway that has generated controversy and complaints from local business owners. From January 1 2013 to July 23, 2014 there were 234 police calls and 411 fire calls at the homeless shelter and 374 police calls in the general area. For years, people have complained about the large number of homeless people around the shelter. Many people feel uncomfortable coming to the area and this has meant a loss of customers for businesses. The City of Hollywood will spend $2,521,800 to buy the land and buildings from Cononie and another $2,521,800 in a post closing agreement between Cononie and the City that he will not operate a homeless shelter operation for 30 years in Hollywood. Cononie cannot even be indirectly involved with a homeless shelter or program in Hollywood. If there is a county emergency or cold day, he can pick up homeless people and take them to a shelter outside Hollywood. Cononie plans to build a new facility to shelter the homeless on three acres of land in unincorporated Broward County northwest of Interstate 595 and State Road Seven. The City will obtain the money for the purchase from the rent collected from Margaritaville which is expected to open in July 2015. Margaritaville will pay $1 million in rent to the City annually and money from that rent will go toward the purchase of the properties. Also Commission agreed to amend to Fiscal Year 2015 budget to accommodate the purchase. The City of Hollywood is planning to work with developers to improve North Federal Highway and make a desirable place
to visit. The goal is to apply the Complete Streets program and make it friendly to pedestrians and bicycle riders. While plans have not been finalized, it is expected that the homeless shelter will be demolished and the land redeveloped. Cosac will relocate all clients and the properties will be delivered vacant to developers. “We want to develop this area. We are not turning our backs on the homeless but this is not a good place for a homeless shelter,” said City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark. She emphasized that negotiations between Cononie and the City had been respectful. “I think it will be a good move for the City of Hollywood. This was a win-win for Hollywood. They want to redevelop Federal Highway. We are a chronic homeless shelter. We are not a prison. People don’t like to see the homeless on our property in wheelchairs. It scares people away and discourages business,” said Cononie. The City of Hollywood has hired Laurie Ann Walton to serve as the coordinator for the City’s efforts to help the homeless. During the meeting, a number of residents expressed concerns about the large amount of money being spent to buy Cononie’s and Cosac’s properties. One resident said the City was paying too much for the land. Other residents expressed concern that more homeless shelters would open up and that one was already in operation on Sherman Street. Because there is a soup kitchen and other amenities for the homeless in Hollywood, some residents believe the homeless will continue to live in the area. There was concern that the homeless problem was not being handled properly. Commissioner Peter Hernandez said the deal was not addressing the homeless problem in Hollywood. Mayor Peter Bober said the deal would allow the City to open a new chapter on Federal Highway. He said that Cononie would be able to build a homeless facility in an area more suitable of his mission and that Hollywood could make significant improvements to that section of Federal Highway. The date of the closing is six months

McArthur High School joins annual Harvest Drive to collect for families in need BY DAVID VOLZ
Sabrina Nelson believes it dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com is important to help people in need. She is president of the McArthur High School Student Government Association (SGA) and Co-Chairperson of the Harvest Drive. This is an initiative being promoted by Broward County Public Schools to collect nonperishable food items to be distributed to needy families. “I believe in the Harvest Drive. It is a powerful feeling to help other people. It makes me thankful and appreciative for what I have. I want to share with others,” said Nelson. “I feel people should care about others. We are all human beings. I encourage students to give food out of the goodness of their hearts.” McArthur High School students are leading the Harvest Drive collection effort. They are encouraging students from nearby middle schools and elementary schools to bring in non-perishable food items from their homes. These food items are being collected at McArthur High School. Nelson has spoken to elementary and middle school students about the importance of sharing their food with people in need. Briana Ginjauma, co-chairperson of the McArthur Harvest Drive and a member of the SGA said believes in the importance of helping others. She knows her mother struggled as a young person but now her family is financially stable. She wants lower income families to be able to afford a Thanksgiving dinner. “I care about other people and I want to be able help others,” said Ginjauma. She is an officer in the McArthur JROTC program. Mary Geus, the advisor to the SGA is
proud of the effort students in the SGA have made in making the Harvest Drive a success. “The students have done community outreach to the elementary and high schools that feed into our campus,” she said. “We have done fundraisers at football games.” McArthur students have worked with a Publix in Cooper City. They will ask shoppers at the Publix to buy products in the Publix Buy One Get One program and give the Harvest Drive the extra product. Sometimes customers will give both food items to the Harvest Drive. People can make financial donations to the Harvest Drive.
There are nine schools including McArthur’s area. The goal is to collect enough food items and financial support to provide 10 bags of groceries and a $35 Publix gift card to between 10 and 12 families in each of the ten schools including McArthur that are in McArthur’s Innovation Zone. The families are identified by social workers and their identities are kept confidential. It is expected that 125 families will receive bags of groceries. “The idea of giving back to their own community has caught on with the students here,” said Geus. Please make this the year you elect to support and participate in this worthwhile, countywide charitable effort so that ‘no child goes hungry’. Hollywood resident celebrates 105th birthday with friends at local senior center BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
For 36 years, the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center in Hollywood has been a “home away from home” for area seniors. Every weekday the Meyerhoff Center provides a broad range of programs, activities and social services to more than 100 Southeast Broward residents ages 60 and older who gather at the not-forprofit facility at 3081 Taft St. to socialize and stay healthy, active and involved. Among them is Hollywood resident Erika Engelfried, who turns 105 on Nov. 22. Engelfried, a native of Kiel, Germany, and a former concert pianist who performed at Carnegie Hall, has been attending the center’s adult day care program for the past four years. One day a week, Engelfried enjoys playing classical music on the center’s piano and participating in music therapy, word games and pet therapy dog visits. Her involvement in center activities helps keep Engelfried active after a full life that also included working as a hairdresser after the Depression, a naturalist for a local park in New York and, after moving to Florida in 1987, running the Rose Garden at Flamingo Gardens, a notfor-profit wildlife sanctuary, aviary, and botanical garden in Davie, for several years. Engelfried also served as a docent at the Bonnet House, a historic home in Fort Lauderdale, giving all of the international tours in several languages. Engelfried’s milestone 105th birthday will be celebrated with friends and staff members at the Meyerhoff Center. “We will have a party with a special birthday cake and

hope that Erika herself will entertain with a piano concert,” said Justine Hoo, the center’s new executive director since the end of September. Hoo is hoping to increase awareness of the Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center/Southeast Focal Point and the ways in which it addresses the growing needs of the area’s older adults. “There is a lack of knowledge of the center’s existence and the services offered,” she said. “We need community awareness.” The struggling center has lost well over $100,000 in federal funding in the past two years. “We are planning a gala early next year, along with quarterly events to bring the community into the center and raise much-needed funds to keep our social services available to our community,” Hoo said. These services include a variety of weekly programs, health and wellness events, trips to local attractions, and support groups and events conducted by skilled counselors who help adults through the aging process and assist family members with caregiving issues and bereavement. The Joseph Meyerhoff Senior Center/Southeast Focal Point is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that administers its programs with Federal Older American Act Funds and State General Revenue Funds through the State of Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Aging and Disability Resource Center/Area Agency on Aging of Broward County. Center hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 954-966-9805 or visit www. meyerhoffcenter.org.

They serve the homeless men, women, and children of South Broward County and teach life skills by providing education and counseling to those in need. They also accept donations and volunteers and can be contacted at 9549267414. Jaycees Junior Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will be delivering baskets filled with food for a full Thanksgiving dinner to approximately 100 families in need in the Greater Hollywood area. They are accepting donations of food, money and gift cards to complete this project. They can be contacted at 9549814378 and donations can be made on their website, hollywoodfljacyees.com. The Community Enhancement Collaboration, or CEC is located at 564 Wiley Street in Hollywood and does many amazing things for our community. They are going to have a turkey giveaway on November 22nd, right in time for Thanksgiving. They accept donations, which can be made on their website cecwashpark. org. The CEC also has many volunteer opportunities. They can be contacted at 954-9870625. All of the above places offer volunteer opportunities during the holiday season and also throughout the year. If you aren’t able to help one of these organizations, you could simply help an elderly neighbor or a member of your family who could use your assistance. Just an hour of your time can make a huge impact on someone’s life. It is great for teens to become involved in their community, and there is no better way to do that than by helping others. What organizations will you be volunteering for this Thanksgiving season or this year? Tell us on the Hollywood Gazette Facebook page or on Instagram with the hashtag #hgvolunteer.

HEALTH NEWS
Senstive teeth? Here’s what you can do.
Q: My teeth are very sensitive. They hurt whenever I drink something cold. Is there anything that can be done about it?
A: There are many reasons why teeth could become sensitive. This condition is fairly common, affecting some 15% of the population. Dentin hypersensitivity may affect a person’s quality of life since they may not be able to enjoy certain foods and suffer pain or discomfort. Some “Dental Hypersensitivity” could be due to recent dental treatment. Tooth fillings and other work performed on vital teeth may irritate the nerve inside the tooth and cause some inflammation. This type of pain is sharp, short in duration and usually appears right after having something cold or biting on something. This condition should resolve by itself in a short period of time, up to a week or two after the procedure was performed. The most common cause of tooth sensitivity is gingival recession (receding gums). When the gums recede they leave the root surface of the tooth exposed. There are many thousands of small tubules that connect the pulp (nerve) with the exposed root surface. These tubules are filled with fluid and disruptions in the flow of this fluid will trigger receptors causing pain. Some disruptions in the flow are caused by temperature changes,
especially cold and by mechanical irritation like the one produced when brushing the teeth or rubbing the root surface. There are several forms of treatment for dentinal hypersensitivity. There are many products in the market designed to treat this condition. Most treatments have as their goal the covering of the exposed tubules and to seal the root surface. There are numerous toothpastes and mouthwashes, creams and varnishes that can be topically applied. The different chemical ingredients that you may find in these products include, potassium nitrate (the most common), zinc chloride, strontium chloride and various fluoride formulations including sodium fluoride and stannous fluoride or potassium fluoride. There are also ways to cover the root surfaces of the exposed teeth by performing fillings or gum grafting.
If you have sensitive teeth, they may become more sensitive with whitening products, even with the socalled whitening products for sensitive teeth. Since there are a lot of different reasons as to why a tooth may be overly sensitive and many reasons why the gums recede, we recommend having a thorough evaluation by your Dentist. The Dentist can rule out more serious conditions like tooth decay, tooth fractures, failing or leaking restorations, occlusal trauma (uneven bite) and periodontal disease. We also see a lot of patients that suffer from dental acid erosion. The acid removes the outer layer of the teeth (enamel) and predisposes the teeth to sensitivity. The largest source of acid in the mouth comes from the acids present in the stomach and a lot of patients with dentinal hypersensitivity also present gastroesophageal reflux disease. The Dentist can point you in the right direction since this condition could be potentially serious and must be diagnosed and treated by a Medical Doctor. - Hans Sperling, DMD Dental Care Center of Hollywood We Care for People, not just teeth.

HEALTH NEWS
Lung cancer study underway at Memorial Cancer Institute BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
Zayde Toquica, a health-conscious dentist who had never smoked, was beyond surprised when a persistent cough and sudden sharp pain in her chest were diagnosed in August 2013 as stage 3B lung cancer. She was just 35 years old at the time. “I wasn’t expecting that,” said Toquica, 36, of Sunrise. “I was in shock.” But a groundbreaking new lung cancer study that Toquica is participating in at the Memorial Cancer Institute could unlock the mystery of why young nonsmokers like Toquica are being diagnosed with this deadliest form of cancer and reveal distinct therapies for effectively treating it. The Genomics of Young Lung Cancer study (GoYLC) is being conducted by an international team of medical investigators studying genes and their functions. The investigators are hoping to discover targetable genetic subtypes of lung cancer that young patients who never smoked possess, in addition to other risk factors such as environment and heredity, that require distinct treatment strategies. The study was launched July 23 by the Addario Lung Cancer Medical Institute (ALCMI), a patient-centric research
Zayde consortium founded in 2008 and a partner organization of the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation (ALCF). One of the largest philanthropies devoted exclusively to eradicating lung cancer, the ALCF has raised more than $15 million for research since it was established in March 2006. Both non-profit organizations were founded by stage 3B lung cancer survivor Bonnie J. Addario. “It’s heartbreaking when you meet young adults with lung cancer, who should have their full lives ahead of them but instead are
fighting for their lives because of the lack of lung cancer treatments,” Addario said. “This groundbreaking study will investigate why young adults under the age of 40 are getting lung cancer and whether they have a unique cancer subtype, or genotype, that can be treated differently.” Toquica’s story, though surprising, is not all that unique. Over 20 percent of all new lung cancer patients in the U.S. are nonsmokers, and nearly 4,500 people under age 45 will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2014, according to estimates from the American Cancer Society. Toquica is one of 60 patients being evaluated in the initial study by Dr. Raez medical investigators at the University of Southern California’s Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, the DanaFarber Cancer Institute in Boston, Ohio State University and the University of Torino in Italy. Toquica joined the clinical study in August through her oncologist, Dr. Luis Raez, the medical director of Memorial Cancer Institute. “We are going to study their genes to find out what mutation, what anomaly, what chromosome failed and led to the development of lung cancer,” Raez said. “At the same time we are going to figure out and better classify
the type of lung cancer that they have because today for young people there are sometimes more options for treatment than there are for older patients.” “Chemotherapy wasn’t working for me. I think I’m on the third type of chemotherapy now.” said Toquica, whose cancer spread to her liver during treatment. “Dr. Raez ran genetic tests, and they already found two genes that are causing me problems.” “This study will revolutionize methods in how we diagnose and treat young lung cancer before it is too late,” Raez said. Toquica said her participation in the clinical study gives her hope that she will become a lung cancer survivor. In the meantime, she continues to stay busy, working in her new solo dental practice, while going to weekly appointments at Memorial Cancer Institute. “The most important thing is to keep your mind occupied on something different and think about the future,” Toquica said. To learn more about the Genomics of Young Lung Cancer study, visit www. openmednet.org/site/alcmi-goyl. Patients may enroll in the study regardless of where they live and do not need to travel to any of the research institutions. For additional information on the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation, visit www. lungcancerfoundation.org.

The culturally diverse organization of 100 members is dedicated to community service and the support of local and international charitable organizations. Their Clubhouse functions as a center for community, social, educational and fund raising events and has completed restorations of its foundation and other critical issues. Funds raised will support the Clubs community service programs and the continuing restoration.

Trash 2 Art started out as an idea to raise some operating capital and awareness for the fledgling Fort Lauderdale-based organization and quickly grew into what is now considered South Florida’s premier repurposed art show. For the fourth year, Trash 2 Art will be a juried exhibition with cash prizes awarded to the winners in the Professional Adult ($200 prize), Amateur Adult ($100 prize) and Children’s categories ($50 prize in K-5th grade, 6-8 grade and 9-12 grade). All mediums are welcome. The only requirement is that artwork be created from 75 percent recycled or repurposed materials such as those typically found at the Trash 2 Treasure Creative Reuse Center. T2T offers a cornucopia of “clean scrap” at no cost with an annual membership – $60 for an individual and $150 for five members of a school or other organization. T2T

has a few hundred members that include teachers, crafters and Girl Scouts. Among the vast inventory are art and office supplies, scrapbooking materials, greeting cards, fabrics, toys and wine bottle corks. “We solicit businesses to donate what they normally would throw away,” said Lisa Max, T2T’s chairman of the board and a Hollywood resident. “There’s so much random stuff there, it’s impossible to describe.” In addition to community events and the T2T Creative Reuse Center, the organization has a community garden and hosts workshops on such craft projects as how to create a ukulele from a cigar box. “An important part of our mission is creative play,” Max said. Trash 2 Treasure recently relocated its operations and reopened on October 1 at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale, where Max hopes to significantly increase membership and awareness of the organization through greater linkage to other organizations and agencies, more workshops, and additional meeting, gallery and gift shop space. Trash 2 Treasure also is enjoying its new community partnership with the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). “The CRA office operation is green-conscious and has recently rolled out an aggressive anti-litter program on the beach,” Max said. “Our whole mission is putting things to higher and
better use. Reduce, reuse, recycle.” A reception will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sat., Nov. 15 at the Visual Arts Pavilion in conjunction with the monthly Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk. The reception is open to the public at no charge and will feature a meet-and-greet with artists and light refreshments. Community partners also are being sought to help sponsor the event, as are volunteers and donations of clean scrap for the Trash 2 Treasure Creative Reuse Center. Hospital Will Match Food Donations Pound for Pound up to the first 1500 lbs Hollywood Animal Hospital (HAH) is teaming up with Broward Meals on Wheels (BMOW) for Companion Animals to collect food for pets of homebound seniors throughout Broward County. The success of last year’s food drive far resulted in a total donation of 4000 pounds of pet food. With the support this year of many of our local purveyors, we are once again able to match donations received. Donations of canned and dry food for cats and dogs made from November 15thDecember 20, 2014 will be matched by the HAH (up to the first 1,500 pounds). “Our partnership with Broward Meals on Wheels for Pets has become a great source of pride for all of us at the HAH. We love being a part of such a supportive community. We could not be happier to give back with them,” said Linda Ream, Communications Coordinator for HAH. BMOW delivers pet food once a month to homebound seniors who need assistance taking care of their in-home pets. Pet food is provided through the generosity of community donations. The need for donations of cat food is in particular demand among BMOW clients. “The quantity of food used monthly by Broward Meals on Wheels for Pets is around 800 lbs alone for the southern portion of Broward County. These food collections go a long way to help feed the furry family members of the seniors in need here in Broward.” explains Bobbi Arnold, Co- Chair of Broward Meals on Wheels for pets. For additional information on BMOW, please visit http://www.bmow.org/ourservices/.
