ENVIRORNMENT

Hollywood commission unanimously passes anti-fracking resolution BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

When the City of Hollywood joined a growing number of Florida municipalities and counties in passing an anti-fracking resolution, it represented both a personal and a professional victory for Jennifer Ehrenfried, a Hollywood resident who works for the nonprofit public interest organization Food & Water Watch. Fracking, a controversial hydraulic fracturing technique for recovering natural gas and oil from shale rock with chemicals injected underground, has become an even hotter topic in South Florida since a Miami-based oil company has proposed drilling in the Everglades, just five miles west of Miramar. Environmentalist groups say the proposed oil well would damage the Everglades’ ecological system and endanger critical water resources that millions of South Florida residents rely on. “Through my work with Food & Water Watch and the statewide coalition Floridians Against Fracking, I have become aware of the many dangers these extreme forms of fuel extraction pose to south Florida, especially coastal cities like Hollywood,” said Ehrenfried, Florida intern with Food & Water Watch. “Besides exacerbating climate change and sea-level rise, fracking operations threaten our water supply, bring air, noise and light pollution with their round-theclock operations and heavy truck traffic, as well as all of the dangers associated with transporting the fuel and toxic chemicals used in the process.” Kantor Real Estate LLC, which submitted an application to the state over the summer, owns about 20,000 acres of Everglades land. The exploratory project would necessitate drilling as deep as two miles on a 5-acre oil pad, around the clock for up to 80 days, to assess the feasibility of extracting oil.

While drilling in the Everglades is not uncommon, critics of the Kantor project say it’s much too close for comfort, as many of the region’s municipalities draw all, or at least most, of their drinking water from the Biscayne Aquifer that runs through the company’s Everglades property. The anti-fracking resolution

unanimously passed by the Hollywood City Commission July 8 supports a statewide ban on “extreme hydraulic fracturing and other similar methodologies for energy resource extraction in Florida.” “As a longtime resident of the area, I was so proud to see the Hollywood City Commission unanimously pass a resolution supporting a statewide ban on various forms of fracking,” Ehrenfried said. “It is a rare pleasure to see local governments standing up to protect their communities and the environment the way Hollywood has. The commission has shown great leadership, foresight and good stewardship by taking this step.” Consumer advocate groups say the extraction of oil and gas has led to serious health and environmental issues in states across the country, resulting in a growing number of communities banning fracking within their borders. To date, resolutions have been passed by municipalities and counties in 24 states and Washington, DC. More than 30 anti-fracking resolutions have been passed in Florida. In addition to its efforts to ban fracking, Food & Water Watch is working around the state to protect the food supply through mandatory GMO food labeling. Visit www.foodandwaterwatch.org for more information on the organization’s efforts to protect the environment and ensure the safety, accessibility and sustainability of food, water and fish consumed by the public.

MUNICIPAL NEWS

Hollywood passes 2016 budget on second hearing

Hollywood City Commissioners CORRESPONDENT approved a final dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com budget after the second budget hearing on September 28. The fiscal year 2016 budget takes effect on October 1, 2015. The proposed millage rate of 7.4479 mills is unchanged from current rate, with a slight decrease in the voter approved debt service. This means the owner of a homesteaded property with a taxable value of $140,000 would pay approximately $1,043 in property taxes. The proposed Fire Assessment fee is also unchanged from its current rate of $209. Overall, the taxable value of property in the City of Hollywood increased by 7.99% in FY 2015. This will generate an additional $6.4 million in taxes citywide, with $3.5 million of

that available to help cover costs to the City’s general fund. The budget for all funds totals $490,087,321 (net of transfers) which represents a decrease of 1.5% or $7.7 million over the FY 2015 net adopted All Funds budget. A significant change in the FY 2016 proposed budget can be found in the Utilities Fund which decreased by $19.7 million due mostly to a reduction in expected capital expenditures of $17.0 million. Hollywood Police to receive pay increase Hollywood police officers CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com will see a pay raise thanks to the latest contract approved by the City Commission. This is a major improvement for the officers who along with other city employees saw a decrease in their pay four years ago after the city declared a state of financial urgency because of a large budget gap. The total additional cost of the 3-year contract is approximately $7.9 million. These are the raises set forth in the CBA for each fiscal year: The across -the-board increases include: Year 1 (FY 2015): 3.5% wage increase – retroactive to the first full pay period on or after October 1, 2014; Year 2 (FY 2016): 2.5% wage increase – effective first full pay period on or after October 1, 2015; Year 3 (FY 2017): 2.5% wage increase - effective first full pay period on or after October 1, 2016. An additional pay increase in the amount of one-half (0.5%) percent will be added to the base step pay plans, retroactive to the first full pay period on or after October 1, 2016, provided that the Funded Ratio of the City of Hollywood Police Officers Pension Plan (Pension Plan), as reported in the Pension Plan's GASB 67 Financial Statements for the plan year ending 9/30/2016 is at least two percentage points more than the Funded Ratio reported in the Pension Plan’s GASB 67 Financial Statements for the plan year

BEACH AND DOWNTOWN

Hollywood Trolley expands service to seven days a week BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is making public transportation more convenient than ever with expanded hours for the Hollywood Trolley, which operates seven days a week beginning October 1. The new operating hours for the trolley are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday. An additional trolley hub also has been added at the new Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort at 1111 N. Ocean Drive, and free transfer to the TriRail train-to-trolley shuttle will be offered beginning October 12. The Hollywood Trolley allows visitors and residents alike to explore everything Hollywood has to offer, from cultural activities and much more in the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district, to nature offerings on North Beach, to dining, shopping and recreation options on the central and south beaches. Public transportation is even more convenient for smartphone users riding

the Hollywood Trolley when they download a free mobile app, TSO Mobile Hollywood Trolley. Compatible with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, this cutting-edge mobile app allows users to take advantage of an entirely new redesigned mobile online tracker that takes trolley riders by the hand and guides them to their next destination. In addition, a free automated system in English, French and Spanish also lets those callers who are not smartphone-friendly know when the next trolley will arrive at a specific stop. Features of the new mobile app include route schedules and trolley times, a realtime Trolley Tracker, an Automated Voice Interactive System (A.V.I.S.), detailed stop information, and user-friendly route maps that are constantly updating. Smartphone users can filter their search by selecting a specific stop number or route, find out the nearest stops to their current location and learn what their best possible route is for any location by entering a complete address. Step-by-step directions include an easy-to-follow blue line. The Hollywood Trolley is designed

to improve mobility, enhance the visitor experience, and ease parking demand and traffic congestion. The trolley departs approximately every 30 minutes from more than a dozen downtown and beach stops. The fare is $1 per person per ride (exact change required) and is free for children ages 5 and younger. Trolley Coupon Ticket Books are available for $25 for 25 rides. To download the free app, search “Hollywood Trolley” or view the mobile version at hollywood.tsomobile.com. To access the Hollywood Trolley Automated System, call 954-399-7990. For more information on the Hollywood Trolley, visit www.visithollywoodfl.org/trolley.

The Hollywood Trolley is funded through a Public Transport Service Development Grant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) with matching funds from the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and its funding partners: the City of Hollywood, Broward County, Children’s Services Council and South Broward Hospital District. For information on businesses or events in Downtown Hollywood or on Hollywood Beach, call the Hollywood CRA at 954-924-2980 or visit www. hollywoodcra.org.

Walk to end Alzheimer’s set for Oct. 24 at North Beach Park Participants to Raise Critically Needed Funds for Alzheimer’s Care, Support and Research The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Hollywood residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. Walk to End Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Hollywood North Beach Park in Hollywood. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk. It is an experience for the more than 2,000 participants in Broward who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities and clinical studies enrollment to support programs and services. Walk participants also honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony. 12

OCTOBER 2015

“Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is a fun opportunity for the community to help us get closer to our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s,” said CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter, Ann May. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 150,000 residents of South Florida living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing criticallyneeded research.”

In addition to the 2-mile walk, there will be a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. We would like to thank our presenting sponsor The LENOX on the Lake for their support for this local walk. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate,

increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050. To start or join a team today, visit the Alzheimer’s Association alz.org/walk. To learn more about disease and available resources, call the toll-free Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at 800-2723900.

Community invited to participate in public school strategic plan survey through Oct. 12 Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is developing its new 2016-2019 Strategic Plan, and invites parents, students, staff and community members to participate in the planning process by completing a web-based survey. The survey provides valuable feedback, which will be used to further the District’s current goals and priorities. Three years ago, the School Board identified three core areas of focus: High Quality Instruction, Continuous Improvement and Effective Communication, and outlined goals and priorities as part of the 2012-2015 Strategic Plan. In an effort to align the Strategic Plan with the state’s Florida Standards

Assessments requirements and gather stakeholder input, the District will use the 2015/16 school year as a planning year for developing the 2016-2019 Strategic Plan. This brief survey is just one way the District will receive valuable input and feedback from the community. The online survey is available on the District website through October 12, 2015. The survey is anonymous, and parents, students, staff and community members are encouraged to participate. To access the survey, visit browardschools.com from any computer or mobile device and click on the Strategic Plan survey icon.

DIVERSITY – DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, SHARED EXPERIENCES: From the families down at the Monday Night food trucks to the people attending the Full Moon drum circle; from having diverse watering holes like Ginger Bay, Whiskey Tango and Mickey Byrnes; we have such a diverse group of folks in our community and we all seem to learn from each other and grow as individuals through our shared experiences that enrich our lives.

Simply put: Its people. But just because a community has people doesn’t necessarily make it strong. Strength comes through its people being connected, inclusive, diverse and free. CONNECTIVITY AND INCLUSION – KNOWING YOUR NEIGHBORS AND BEING INVOLVED: In our community we enjoy seeing familiar faces at places we frequent as a family. Typically that’s hard to say in South Florida. Running into the same people at the Y on Taft, seeing the same familiar faces at Publix or getting to know other parents during drop offs at Hollywood schools makes us feel connected and have a sense community. It’s great to see all the families at Rotary park with their kids practicing ball on the fields and folks chatting while their dogs play at Hollywoof. From great scavenger hunts and Parties with a Purpose organized by the Hollywood Gazette, to events at Young Circle like the 9/11 memorial ceremony and ArtWalk, that feeling of being connected encourages a strong inclusive community.

FREEDOM – SECURITY AND ECONOMIC STRENGTH Our amazing corps of first responders and police officers are the epitome of professionalism and bravery. They keep our families safe and comfortable to move freely throughout our community. Local government support of small businesses; having less regulations allowing small family-owned businesses to flourish, grow, hire and expand, will help keep our citizens employed and contributing to the growth and development of our community.

Dispelling the 5 biggest CrossFit lies BY SHONDELLE SOLOMONMILES, CROSSFIT 954 OWNER & HEAD COACH CROSSFIT IS FOR HARDCORE PEOPLE- If your introduction to CrossFit was watching the CrossFit Games on ESPN or an isolated CrossFit class, then I totally GET why you may think that CrossFit is only for the super fit! I used to think that as well. However, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, I would guess that more than 90% of CrossFitters are NOT fit when they start, which is WHY they start (go figure). What you see on TV is the end result, NOT the beginning. Any respectable CrossFit ‘box’ will meet you where YOU are, and not hold you to the standards of the elite CrossFit athletes that you see on TV, who ironically, represent less than 1% of the CrossFit population. CROSSFIT WILL INJURE YOU - If I had a dollar for every time I heard this myth I’d undoubtedly be a millionaire. Is it possible to get injured doing CrossFit? Of course, just as it is possible to get injured running, bowling, playing tennis or moving furniture. Any time you are moving your body, especially with vigor, injury is possible. Does that mean it’s a for sure thing? Absolutely NOT. The keys are knowing your body and its limitations and perhaps more importantly, hiring a qualified, attentive coach who pre-screens and appropriately programs workouts to minimize your risk of injury. CrossFit, like any form of exercise, is not without risk, but the benefits, far outweigh them.

your muscle, therefore more muscle equals more fat-burning potential. This is why CrossFit includes strength training and ‘fatburning’ cardio. So YES, not only can you lose lots of weight and fat doing CrossFit, but you will also likely get in the BEST shape of your life! CROSSFIT IS EXPENSIVE- As compared to what? A $40 L.A. Fitness membership that you use once a month? Yes. Or, perhaps as compared to your YMCA membership that you use a few times a week, to stroll on a treadmill, meander aimlessly in a weight room, or stand in the back of a group class where the instructor doesn’t know your name? YES. By investing in a CrossFit membership, you are not only paying for a place to work out, you are paying for expert coaching, a supportive environment that thrives on community, and most importantly… RESULTS! CrossFit is not the cheapest fitness option available, but it is perhaps the option that will give you the biggest bang for your buck…literally!

The South Florida

Festival

CROSSFIT IS A CULT- If you consider a community of people who work out together, encourage each other to overcome their perceived limitations, share daily triumphs and defeats, uplift one another because it’s the ‘natural’ thing to do, and inspire each other both in and outside of the box, then YES, CrossFit is a cult. However, last I checked there was no positive connotation assigned to the word ‘cult’. Perhaps a more appropriate definition of CrossFit would be COMMUNITY, and I think we can all benefit from more of that.

CROSSFIT IS A FRANCHISE- CrossFit is A Gino’s Italian and we are ALL NOTMarket a franchise. Therefore,

CrossFit boxes are different regarding business model, coaching experience, programming philosophy, pricing, class size, training niche, demographic and the list goes on. The BEST way to know if you are choosing the CrossFit box that is right for you is by doing your research, visiting and participating in a trial class. We invite you to giveth CrossFit 954 a complimentary try. Shondelle Solomon-Miles is the Head Fitness coach and owner of Synergize Home of CrossFit 954. Pfft… If that was theArtsPark case I would have at Young Circle been out of business years ago because most people who comeDowntown into my CrossFit Hollywood ‘box’ are seeking weight/fat loss. CrossFit is movement. Intense, full body movement, both of which significantly transform the body. The majority of your fat is burned in

ART & ENTERTAINMENT

Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar serves up unique new concept in Downtown Hollywood BY CARON CONWAY

FEATURE CORRESPONDENT

caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Don’t let the name mislead you: Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar in Downtown Hollywood is not your typical neighborhood coffee shop. Open since June 6 in a historic building at 1916 Harrison St., Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar also serves food, craft beers and wine. The laid-back art-centric ambiance boasts live art, gallery space and free WiFi. Proprietor Rich Duncan branded his business to appeal to a wide demographic. Coffeebean Bar manager Donna Prieto said the new concept offers something for everyone and has attracted a mix of customers, including college students who go there to study and families with children who enjoy the board game tournaments that are offered. “A lot of people are looking for a place like this, a relaxing environment where you can sit and have a cup of coffee or a beer, play some pool, play some darts,” Prieto said. “People say they can stay here all day – come in the morning and have some coffee, stay for lunch and then enjoy Happy Hour.” True to its name, Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar is serious about its coffee, offering an international selection of java beans – from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Guatemala, Hawaii, Jamaica, Kenya, Sumatra and Tanzania – that are ground fresh, brewed in a French press and served in large mugs. Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar is also one of the few establishments in the area to offer blueberry- and mint-flavored Kombucha on tap. The 2,000-year-old beverage was called the “Immortal Health Elixir” by the ancient Chinese because of its degenerative disease-fighting benefits. Other beverages include blended-health mixed-fruit or veggie drinks with optional protein powder or wheat grass. The Coffeebean Bar also offers a variety of craft beers on tap (including Arcus India Pale Ale, Pop’s Porter, Stiltsville, Shark Bite, Key Billy, Funky Buddha Last Snow Porter and Funky Buddha Floridian Hefeweizen), as well as Due South Brewery and Cigar City Brewery craft beers in cans. The only national brand the Coffeebean Bar serves is O’Doul’s non-alcoholic beer. “All of our beers are from Florida breweries,” Prieto said. “There are so many amazing beers in Florida. It’s like this

untapped resource.” No pun intended. The Coffeebean Bar menu features a $5 lunch special (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays); pastries ($4); tapas ($5 for herring, salmon, fish dip, pate, sausage, meats or cheeses); and an all-day bagel breakfast for $2 including cream cheese, with a variety of toppings starting at $1 each. As a live-art venue, Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar offers Art & Wine Wednesday events hosted by Duncan’s wife, artist Mary Duncan, who often sits in the front window of the establishment and paints. Art & Wine Wednesday, from 6 to 10 p.m., includes a painting class with cheese and a champagne tasting for the artists followed by wine tasting during class. After 10 p.m., the doors open to the public for Ladies Night with drink specials. The cost of Art & Wine Wednesday is $35 and includes paint, a canvas, an easel and an apron. Prieto said the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district is a good fit for the Coffeebean Bar, which is committed to spotlighting area artists. “We’re always interested in local artists that want to come in and showcase their work,” she said. Harrison’s Coffeebean Bar is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Happy Hour is 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call 954922-0074 or visit www.coffeebeanbar.com.

OCTOBER 2015

Motorists advised to use caution in East Hollywood during high tides Extremely high seasonal tides, also known as King Tides, are resulting in street flooding in parts of east Hollywood including Hollywood Beach and the Hollywood Lakes neighborhood. Motorists are urged to use caution and avoid traveling on flooded streets. The Hollywood Police Department and Department of Public Works will place barricades in areas where streets are flooded. If motorists are traveling in areas impacted by tidal flooding, caution should be used and alternate routes should be sought when motorists encounter flooded streets. King tides generally occur in the fall when the alignment of the sun, moon and earth generate higher than normal tides. Local weather conditions causing onshore

winds, rising sea levels and inclement weather including extreme precipitation can combine to exacerbate flooding risks, especially in low-lying coastal areas. The City is working on both short and longterm solutions to minimize the impacts of tidal flooding and just completed the first round of installation of flap gates in the stormwater system. Additionally, the City has undertaken a comprehensive inflow and infiltration reduction program to strengthen the stormwater system. Based on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s tide predictions, above average high tides are expected to continue through October 2 and occur again October 24-31 and November 24-27.
