Police Athletic League to host sixth annual Heroes in Action boxing event By Brett Daly | associate editor The Hollywood Police Athletic League will host its sixth annual Heroes in Action event, a night in which tri-county police officers, firefighters and military personnel box one another for a good cause. Proceeds of the event – to be held on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena at 7 p.m. – benefit the Police Athletic League, a nonprofit organization committed to preventing juvenile crime and drug use by providing activities and positive role models for youth. Hollywood Police Department officers run the youth-activities program and provide structure and guidance for more than 1,000 at-risk children, according to the organization’s website. “P.A.L. gives kids something to do, so they’re not out getting in trouble,” said Charles Howell, who is on the P.A.L. board of directors and helps coordinate the Heroes in Action events. “It’s a positive influence on them and helps build positive relationships between the police and the community.” Started in 1990, the organization offers programs such as football and soccer leagues, cheerleading, boxing and even tutoring and operates out of Boggs Field and an 8,500-square-foot building built with feiture funds, or cash and merchandise seized from criminals. “It’s a great venue for children,” said Janet Fortgang, vice president of P.A.L. “It’s a safe haven for the kids that offers great activities and builds self-esteem while developing close relationships.”

The Heroes in Action event is one of two fundraisers the Police Athletic League sponsors each year, and Howell said it’s a great opportunity for the agencies involved to have a friendly “grudge match..” “This is a great fundraiser and a great night of fun,” he said. “Every year the event has gone up another notch in providing true entertainment. These men and women put their lives on the line every day, and this is their

Change the way you think about your money

Voting is open until Sept. 13 Vote for the 2010 Best of Hollywood Contest Finalists on our Facebook page!

www.facebook.com/hollywoodgazette

BY charles e. howell | charles@cehow.com

Every day I educate people how to responsibly protect and preserve their money, and during this process I have discovered that people are afraid to take control of their money. Many stay in their same comfort zone and have justified every excuse for failure. You need to change the way you think about your money, and you must accept responsibility for protecting and preserving your money. What excuses are there to permit someone not to treat your money with the respect, love and care you deserve? When did it become acceptable for you to lose 40 or 50 percent of your money? Here are some common excuses that indicate you are not protecting and preserving your money: 1. Everyone lost money, but I lost less than others did. 2. I’ve been with them for years. 3. I’ll hold it until it goes back up and then sell it. 4. I don’t even open my mail. I can’t bear to see how much it has gone down. Did you think I was bashing your advisor for your IRA’s and Brokerage accounts? If so, you really need to change the way you think about your money.

Many people are losing 40 percent of their money to pay for health and longterm care. Others are losing 40 percent of their money to the government or that frivolous law suit. Protecting and preserving your money is an all encompassing process that requires a head coach to execute the plays. Has your coach taken action to protect and preserve your money with a game plan that addresses the following? 1. health insurance 2. long-term care insurance 3. liability insurance 4. principal protected investments 5. maximizing your lifetime social security benefits 6. reducing the tax monkey off your back. I urge you to join the ranks of the prepared. When you change the way you think about your money, you will have taken care of the most important thing: YOU! The simple truth is the less you plan, the more you pay. Charles has master’s degrees in Taxation, Accounting & Education. Charles can be reached at 954-559-8556 or at charles@cehow.com,.

Martial arts classes teach self-defense, important life skills to Hollywood kids BY BRETT DALY | brett@hollywoodgazette.com ASSOCIATE EDITOR

In an attempt to not only teach children important life-saving selfdefense skills but also to teach children important life skills, the Milic Sport Club offers martial arts classes in Hollywood. Founded in 2008, Milic Sport Club aims to provide individuals with extensive knowledge of the martial arts in an environment that promotes personal well-being, growth and development, according to its website. Sensei Andrej Milic, the instructor who has 16 years of martial arts experience, said the martial arts classes teach children how to deal with bullying (the problem he thinks ranks No. 1 among children), how to escape if attacked by strangers and values like confidence and leadership. “I think it’s important to get kids empowered,” Milic said. “We teach them how to take control of situations and teach them positive habits. One thing every kid will leave these classes with is discipline.” In addition to empowerment and discipline, Milic said martial arts offer

children great exercise. He said kids have a lot of built-up energy and these classes are a positive way for them to burn that energy off. The classes are limited to 15 children in order to provide more personalized training and are offered all year. And since Milic Sport Club understands that some parents are dealing with economic strain, Milic said they offer low-cost classes and allow first-time participants to try a class for free. The classes and services Milic Sport Club offer have even gained national attention. Milic said the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations have awarded

the club both martial arts and fitness achievements. “This is a good foundation for kids to start achieving personal success,” Milic said. “The skills they get from these classes are definitely going to impact their lives.” Classes are offered at Anytime Fitness, 1715 E. Young Circle, on Tuesdays at 3:15 p.m. and Wednesdays at 5:15 p.m. For more information, visit www. milicsportclub.com or call 786-2183804.

City to install new emergency telephone and surveillance system BY BRETT DALY ASSOCIATE EDITOR brett@hollywoodgazette.com

To increase safety in the Federal Highway area, the City Commission approved the installation of an emergency telephone system that connects directly to the Hollywood Police Department communications center with the push of a button. Major Joseph Healey, of the professional standards division of the Hollywood Police Department, said since the Federal Highway area contains many hotels, motels and foot traffic, a task force

determined the area as a prime location for the new emergency system. “The police department really pours a lot of resources into that small geographic area,” Healey said, adding that Police Chief Chad Wagner has assigned officers to only downtown patrol and recently added two additional squads to deal with street-level crimes. “The emergency phones will add more police presence in the area.” The City enlisted Talk-aPhone Co., a manufacturer of high-technology communication products, to install the phones in the area between Sheridan Street

Hollywood resident Rochelle Williams recently received a $5,000 college scholarship as part of Major League Baseball’s – and the audit, tax and advisory firm KPMG LLP’s – RBI program. The RBI, or Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities, program is designed to provide young people opportunities to play baseball and softball while encouraging academic success and teaching the value of teamwork. Scholarships are awarded on the merits of financial need, academic achievement, leadership skills and community service. “Major League Baseball is proud to acknowledge and honor the young men and women who

have been awarded ‘RBI for RBI’ scholarships,” said Tom Brasuell, vice president, community affairs, Major League Baseball. “Through the RBI program, these student athletes have been brought one step closer to the opportunity of a college-level education. We thank KPMG for joining Major League Baseball in supporting the on and off-field accomplishments and aspirations of these RBI participants.” In addition to financial assistance, KPMG will assign a mentor to Williams. and Pembroke Road and Federal Highway and 21st Avenue. And while the phones are widely used at college and corporate campuses, parking facilities, hospitals and mass-transit locations, Hollywood will be one of the first to use it in a city environment, Healey said. In addition, a video network will accompany the emergency phone system that will allow the Police Department to not only have video surveillance of the area at their station but also in their squad cars. “The video network will give us additional eyes,” Healey said. At the July 7 City Commission meeting, commissioners approved

Modcomp Systems and Solutions to install the wireless network, and the company has already begun installation. Healey said they would like to have the emergency system running by December. And while there has been talk of installing the system at other Hollywood locations, Healey said they want to test the pilot project first. “The important thing to remember is that it’s for emergency uses only,” Healey stressed. “Anyone who feels threatened just has to push the button, and they will be connected with the police.”

Hollywood resident fights for art and music classes in Broward schools Photo by Courtney Ortiz BY CARON CONWAY LEAD CORRESPONDENT caron@hollywoodgazette.com

Federal bill recently approved restores Hollywood Central art programs Hollywood resident Alan Reitman is passionate about the arts, not only as a licensed mental health counselor who holds a double doctorate in group psychology and music therapy but also as the father of a young son who loves art. Reitman, who founded the Cadenza Center for Psychotherapy and the Arts in Hollywood 10 years ago with his wife, Michelle, was stunned to learn last year that his son Sammy’s school, Hollywood Central Elementary, had eliminated its art classes and reduced its formal music program to just 14 hours a year per student. “Most people who heard about this were absolutely appalled and shocked,” said Reitman, whose office services include both music therapy and art therapy. He contacted Broward School District leaders about the “woeful lack of arts education” and put together a presentation on the benefits of arts in education for Hollywood Central’s School Advisory Council meeting last December. Reitman also enrolled his son in private art classes and transferred him this year to a Montessori school for second grade. The watering down – and, in some cases, elimination – of so-called “specials” or elective classes in Broward public schools has become increasingly common in recent years as the district grapples with budget shortfalls. In addition to art, music and drama offerings, physical education classes and media programs have suffered, along with students, Reitman stressed. One program in particular dealing with budget restraints is the Hollywood Hills High School Marching Band, which has struggled with funding deficits for several years, therefore forcing the band to step up its fundraising efforts. Linda Bennett, president of the Band Parent Association at Hollywood Hills, said they have had to get creative with their fundraising in order to secure the money necessary to participate in state competitions. She said in addition to traditional car washes and bake sales, the band is also making Spartan Pride

afghans and flip-flops to sell to students, parents, alumni, etc. But the situation is improving at many Broward schools – including Hollywood Central Elementary, which has restored its art and music programs – thanks to a federal education bill approved last month. Broward will receive about $54 million to rehire teachers and other school employees as part of a new federal stimulus package that includes $10 billion earmarked for education jobs, and the School Board mandated the restoration of arts and other school programs that were cut because of funding deficits. Just days before classes started, the Broward County School Board authorized Superintendent Jim Notter to start recalling nearly 100 laid-off teachers, including many arts and PE instructors. During the summer, 555 teachers in Broward and more than 700 other school system employees lost their jobs as the district struggled with a threeyear revenue loss of nearly $140 million. Reitman would like to see full-time

formal art and music programs at all Broward schools. He points to studies that show that participation in schoolbased arts programs improves attention and reading, math, memorization and problem-solving skills; and provides an opportunity for children to participate in aesthetic experiences, learn to work cooperatively, develop fine and gross motor skills, and prepare for what may be a viable career in the arts. Moreover, formal arts offerings in public schools raise test scores, lower the dropout rate and reduce youth violence, gang activity and anxiety, Reitman said. “I work with kids who are violent, who have drug histories and who have nothing better to do after school than go rob houses for drugs,” he said. High school students are required to take an arts class to graduate, but Reitman said an arts education needs to start much earlier. “Music and art help children express their emotions,” he said, adding that signs of abuse are usually first recognized in a child’s artwork. Reitman’s investigation into arts

education in Broward schools “took me a long time and a tremendous amount of runaround,” he said. “It’s a scam. The wool is being pulled over people’s eyes in the state with regard to the arts.” Reitman criticized what he calls a “stick-figure art education” that often utilizes general education teachers, lacks any formal assessments to measure students’ initial ability and progress and is not being taught according to the Sunshine State Standards. “There is no model for using music or art as a core course in the curriculum,” Reitman said. “So why are there Sunshine State Standards when there’s nobody teaching to those standards?” Reitman said enhanced arts programs would benefit both students and the community in general and should be a top priority in Broward schools. He hopes to encourage other parents to look into their school’s arts offerings, utilize resources from arts organizations such as the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA), lobby state leaders, elect officials who support arts in education, organize school fundraisers to enhance arts programs and band together to form a countywide nonprofit political action committee. A recently formed Facebook group, Broward Children need Music, Art, and PE!, is already nearly 3,000 members strong. Reitman’s wish for all Broward students is to be able to “experience the power of the arts,” as he puts it. “Every culture in the world has that. Where’s our culture taking us? These are not fluff issues but extraordinary issues that speak to the core of our being human.” Post your comments online at www.hollywoodgazette.com or join the discussion on our Facebook Page.

The Greater Hollywood chamber Opposes Amendment 4 Every small business, working family, teacher, health care provider, community leader, elected official, and mainstream environmentalist - every Florida voter - needs to know that our unique quality-of-life is at stake with Amendment 4. But what is Amendment4? The proposed “Vote on Everything” amendment would force Florida voters – not the representatives they elect - to decide hundreds of technical comprehensive plan changes each year. For the following reasons, the Great Hollywood Chamber

of Commerce has taken a position opposing Amendment 4: • THE DISRUPTION of local communities and the daily lives of Floridians will be extraordinary. Cities and counties will be required to hold elections for each proposed comprehensive plan change - not just major projects, but even minor technical details. In the last four years alone, this amendment would have required an average of over 10,599 additional local votes per year in Florida. In fact, had Amendment 4 been in place in 2006, the voters of Carrabelle - a small Franklin County town - would have seen 617 separate questions in a single ballot! • THE DISORDER will further disenfranchise Florida’s already-fatigued electorate. Voters will be deluged with highly technical background materials prepared by the local government planning staff. The legalese of proposed comprehensive plan changes, often puzzling for expert engineers and attorneys, will further dampen voter turnout. Lines at voting booths will grow as Floridians attempt the virtual impossibility of voting on hundreds of separate and often confusing ballot questions. • THE COST will be astronomical. Every city and county in Florida will be burdened with the time and cost of holding additional elections to vote on proposed changes to comprehensive land use plans. Each of these elections will be costly. And with smarter growth stalled, Florida’s robust economy will taper off to a recession while property taxes skyrocket to pay the bills. • THE RESULT will be a system that is far worse, not better. That’s why respected environmental leaders refuse to support the amendment. They know this amendment will not put a stop to all development, but will make well-planned, smarter growth impossible - thereby encouraging sprawl that reduces green space and makes effective growth management unachievable.

Ask Dr. Hedrick... Q: “I have a weight problem. Can you tell me about your weight loss program?” A. Unfortunately, Dr. sCott heDriCK lots of Americans have a large problem with their weight. We are an overweight country getting more overweight. Statistically, 33% of Americans are clinically obese. Our children weigh more on average than ever before. This is the first generation that may have a shorter life expectancy due to the chronic diseases caused by obesity, such as stroke, heart attack, diabetes and cancer. My weight loss program is simple common sense.

Eat healthy and sensibly and exercise consistently and appropriately for your age. Weight falls off slowly and permanently. I detoxify the body, clean up the diet and clinically design a whole food supplement and exercise program. No fad diets, no counting anything, no hunger, no eating crazy foods. Eat a reasonable amount of a variety of good foods as you simply educate yourself into a healthier lifestyle of eating and activity and you will no longer have a weight problem. For Art Sake studio and gallery adds to blossoming Downtown Arts scene

Alan and Debbi Becker recently opened For Art Sake in Downtown Hollywood to fulfill their passion for the arts that corporate America could not satisfy. After Debbie rekindled her passion by taking painting classes and opening her first studio with the help of Alan and fellow artist Joanne Berger, Debbie

still wanted more. She wanted to expand her studio concept and collaborate with other artists who wanted to learn, paint and show their work. So Alan and Debbi searched and found a location in the heart of Hollywood’s Historical District to do exactly that. For Art Sake, located at 2000 Harrison St. #2, is a 1,400-sqaure-foot

studio with 16-foot-high ceilings. The separation of the entities at For Art Sake is unique, and when you enter the premises, the flow is as follows: Gallery: The Gallery is minimalistic, the style is inspired with the feel of a museum and it uses the newest method of hanging systems. Alan and Debbie choose all the art work

hung in the gallery, and presently, the artwork (paintings and photographs) are from local artists. The gallery is open to anyone wishing to submit their work for review. Classroom Environment (Creation Stations): The initial class offerings are Painting (oil, acrylic, watercolor, etc.), Photography, Drawing and Mixed Media. Additional class offerings will include Digital Art and Music. Studio Space: If a two-hour class just doesn’t give you the time you need, For Art Sake offers open studio space by the day, week or month. All you need is some personal supplies, and For Art Sake takes care of the rest. Local Hollywood photographer Tom Olsen will offer a Photography 101 class at For Art Sake, and registration is currently open. The class is designed for anyone with a simple camera who Local photographer Tom Olsen wants to know more about how to produce better imaging. The eighthour course divided into four, twohour classes is about learning to see, choosing the right light conditions and composition. Half of the class time will be theory and the other half will be field work. The cost is $45 for each class session and $40 for students who register in advance for all four classes. Anyone wanting to participate – or learn more – can register on For Art Sake’s website. For Art Sake’s concept is simple: create an environment that takes art full circle. Class, studio, gallery – learn it, work it, show it. But above all, For Art Sake offers a place to collaborate. For more information, visit www.ForArtSake.com or call 954-9212533.

Hollywood resident Susana M. Nocquet-Lopez opened Ansu Gallery in Downtown Hollywood six years ago to share a love for the arts that she has cultivated since her childhood in Argentina, and the artist and gallery owner has not only found an outlet for her creative visions but also has provided other local artists with an opportunity to do the same. Nocquet-Lopez specializes in hand-painted porcelain creations, which include murals on tiles and backsplashes and even “kissing time bells” for wedding receptions that signal for the bride and groom to kiss. And while she originally learned how to paint on canvases, Nocquet-Lopez

said she grew curious about painting on porcelain after coming across artists in New Jersey using that art form. After they shared their techniques with her and after she traveled to Limoges, France to further perfect her craft, Nocquet-Lopez found her niche. “I thoroughly enjoy painting on porcelain,” she said. “The surface is more seductive. It’s softer and more appealing.” Nocquet-Lopez displays her original artwork at Ansu Gallery and also creates art from the ideas of others. Anyone who wants a particular picture painted simply has to bring his or her idea to Nocquet-Lopez and she will create it. In addition to Nocquet-Lopez’s work, Ansu Gallery also features the

work of other local artists, including painters, photographers and papier mache artists. More than a dozen are currently featured. “I try to work with emerging artists – artists who aren’t well-known but want to be well-known,” she said. “It’s great because the artists all have their own style.” And while she has resident artists always on display, Nocquet-Lopez also dedicates an area of the gallery to an artist that will show his or her work for one month. She kicks off the Solo Show the third Saturday of the month – which coincides with the Downtown

Hollywood ArtWalk event – with a vernissage, or preview. She said the event is a great way for artists to gain exposure and a great way for residents to view beautiful art by local artists. She encourages artists to contact her if they are interested in showcasing their work. “Ansu Gallery is a different kind of art gallery and a different kind of business that attracts people to Hollywood,” she said. “We’re getting a nice group of artists featured at the gallery.” For more information about Ansu Gallery, located at 2028 Harrison St., visit www.ansugallery.com or call 954454-5632 or 954-912-4914.

After ten years of serving residents decadent chocolates at her business in Downtown Hollywood, Darlene Eddy will relocate Amazing Chocolates to a new location. But she won’t go far. Her chocolate fountains, handmade sweets and chocolate-dipped fruits will move to Stirling Road just off I-95 in Hollywood. “I feel that we’re going to grow over here,” Eddy said about her decision to move her business’s location. “We have customers who come from surrounding cities, so this location will be more convenient for them.” And to celebrate the move and ten years in business, Amazing Chocolates will expand their goody selection with treats like frozen hot chocolate. In addition, Eddy said Amazing Chocolates will now serve kosher chocolates. DINING ADVENTURES with... marty and company Argentinean dining with a touch of casual Italian defines Kussifay Restaurant. In 2007, a beautiful young woman named Yanina had a vision for an eatery Marty Foyer and called her family restaurant in Argentina to help / food critic her with her dream. The family arrived in Hollywood, started from scratch and now we have an authentic Argentinean restaurant with flavors that say olé. Yanina and her sister Claudia could be college students, but don’t let their pretty looks fool you. These young women work very hard and sample new dishes as though they were preparing dishes for a wedding (how nice is that?). Kussifay is a small restaurant with a large authentic Argentinean menu. The main plates are full of surprises and flavors, and the restaurant is a typical hang-out for Argentineans. When a restaurant has a following where families from Argentina go, that tells me a lot. For starters: EmpanadasEmpanadas-Empanadas. I was told that they are the best in town: They are full of flavor with a choice of ground beef, chicken, spinach or ham and cheese. At a $1.50 each, four of them could fill you up. Take home a dozen or more and it’s $13.80 a dozen or $1.15 each (wow… worth every penny). So we tried them all and my favorite was the chicken with flavors that burst in my mouth. The rolled Spiral Thin Sausage was grilled to perfection and served with Chimichurri Sauce that offered a perfect balance of spices. Ask for more

to dip your bread in. And speaking of bread, all the bread rolls and pizza dough are made in the two big ovens in the kitchen…smells like a bakery (yum). The Main Event: Steak, Chicken and Fish are the staples for any Argentinean restaurant, but with Kussifay’s seasonings and Chimichurri sauce, you’re happy. We passed on the

blood sausages and our eyes went to the table next to us. There was this

fabulous sandwich and a pasta dish that looked very interesting. So I ordered a Chi Vita Al Sandwich consisting of steak, ham and cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and topped with a fried egg all in their homemade, oversized roll. My, oh my, let’s divide it four ways. Next, approaching the table was a Four Cheese & Spinach Ravioli with mushrooms and ham cubes floating in a sauce called Caruso (fabulous). Take a piece of bread and dunk it in. There was more than enough food, bread and dipping sauce…we ate really well, and so will you. Calzones-PizzaPasta and more. Kussifay really has it all. Plus, the wine selection is on every wall and easily visible. We passed on desserts except for the Crêpes filled with caramel and covered with sugar. The perfect dessert for the perfect evening. ART & CULTURE

Landscape photographer opens gallery in Downtown Hollywood BY BRETT DALY

The autumn leaves of Maine, the blue waters of the Caribbean and the rugged terrain of Colorado are now visible in Hollywood thanks to landscape photographer Tim Kiusalaas, who recently held the grand-opening of his gallery in Downtown Hollywood. The Tim Kiusalaas Gallery showcases his latest work entitled “The American Landscape Collection” and features his photographs from all corners of the country. Kiusalaas, a Pennsylvania native, first developed a passion for photography as a child. He grew up with a camera in his hand and a dark room in his basement, snapping and developing black and white pictures of his dogs on walks and geese at the lake where he worked as a lifeguard. And after honing his skills at Penn State, where he majored in Fine Arts, he became an advertising photographer. While traveling on assignment, Kiusalaas

found landscape photography and it soon dominated his work. “I love the process of taking landscape pictures,” he said. “I love the solitude; I love watching the sun rise and the sun set and seeing it change the entire landscape with its bright-orange color. That’s how you get the dramatic landscape pictures.” Kiusalaas said he travels for hours in search of the prime locations to capture his photographs and said he wants to do more than take a picture. He wants to capture a feeling, making people feel like they were there when they look at his images. And to help capture the vivid colors of his photographs and make people feel like they were there, Kiusalaas develops his photographs on archival silver halide paper – which give the photo incredible depth and dimension, he said. In addition, Kiusalaas said he tries to have something for everyone at his gallery. People can purchase small photographs or larger limited-

edition pieces, which he will not print more than 450 copies – perfect, he said, for collectors looking for an investment that will increase over time. And as for the reason Kiusalaas decided to open his gallery in Downtown Hollywood, he said it was because he thinks Hollywood is up and coming. “Hollywood is kind of a hidden

secret to me,” he said. “A lot of people either don’t know about Downtown Hollywood or love it. Once they go, they love it because there are so many things to do.” The gallery, located at 2029 Harrison St., is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 9:30 p.m. For more information about the Tim Kiusalaas Gallery, visit www. americaslandscapes.com.

REAL ESTATE

“Ask the Pink Realtor”

Hollywood Real Estate Q & A BY ROCHELLE LE CAVALIER | rochellelecavalier@gmail.com

Dear Pink Realtor, We just received a “TRIM Notice” from Broward County about our property taxes. It says it is not a bill, but it does show our proposed property taxes. There is a ton of information, most of which makes no sense to me. What is “TRIM” and how can a normal person understand it? Sincerely, Over-Taxed with Details Dear Detail, The “Truth In Millage” (TRIM) Notice is designed to inform you of your rights as a taxpayer. TRIM Notices are sent to property owners every August for taxes payable in November and are due no later than April. To protect your rights as a taxpayer, the TRIM Notice tells you: 1. The proposed market value and assessed value of your property this year compared to last year; 2. Tax-saving exemptions, if any, on your property this year and last year; and 3. The tax amounts and special fees proposed by each of your various taxing authorities (School Board, County Commission, City Commission, etc.); a comparison of the proposed new taxes versus last year’s taxes; and the locations and dates of the public hearings where you can voice your views on the proposed rates, according to the Broward County Property Appraiser website. There is indeed a lot of detail included in the TRIM Notice. A booklet is included to walk homeowners through each section and contains detailed explanations. Should you have more questions, the Broward Country Property Appraiser website has an excellent Frequently Asked Questions section and a friendly staff available via phone or e-mail. Dear Pink Realtor, My TRIM Notice shows my proposed taxes are going up this year. The value of my house has definitely gone down, but the taxes are higher! How is this possible? Obviously Broward needs the money for schools etc., but why am I paying more taxes when my home is worth less?

Sincerely, Paying the Price Dear Price, One possible explanation is the homestead “recapture” rule. If you have a Homestead Exemption and your “Save Our Homes” (SOH) value is less than the market value as of Jan. 1, Florida Administrative Code Rule 12D-8.0062(5) orders the Property Appraiser to increase your overall assessed value each year (up to the 3 percent annual cap level) until it eventually reaches the same amount as the market value. The Department of Revenue set this year’s SOH rate at 2.7 percent. Roughly 177,000 Broward homeowners will unfortunately experience the recapture effects of this law in 2010, even though their overall market values fell. Those impacted by recapture are mostly owners who either purchased and homesteaded their properties before 2001 or newer purchasers who recently moved portability savings to a new property. Talk to your State Senator and Representative if you believe this recapture provision should be amended or repealed. If you believe the assessed value of your property is higher than the fair market value, contact the Broward Country Property Appraiser. Call 954-357-6830 and ask to speak with a deputy appraiser. If they are not able to quickly resolve the matter, file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board by the Sept. 20, 2010 deadline. IMPORTANT: If you wait until you receive your tax bill in November, it will be too late to make any changes to your assessed value and the tax rates. Dear Pink Realtor, My husband and I read your column religiously and love how you make Real Estate so simple and easy to understand. We have an investment property (a house we rent out) in Hollywood and want to meet other Real Estate Investors in the area to continue to learn more about the business and network. Where can we connect with other investors? Sincerely, Looking for Real Estate Connections

Dear Looking, Thank you for the nice compliment! Your best bet is Real Estate Investor Associations, commonly called REIAs. Most REIAs are run by actual local real estate investors and hold meetings once a month. Meetings include time to mingle and network, educational presentations, Q-and-A sessions and opportunities to make deals with other investors in your area. Attending meetings in other areas can also be beneficial. Dues to join are reasonable and many REIAs will allow nonmember guests to attend meetings for a small fee. (BREIA, for example, charges $20.) The real value is in the networking opportunity and the educational presentations. REIAs feature speakers with decades of realworld experience willing to share it all. Broward Real Estate Investors Association (BREIA) is the largest REIA in Broward County and meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Fishing Hall of Fame near Griffin Road and I-95 (www.breia. com). Dade Real Estate Investors Association (DREIA) meets the third Wednesday of each month at Miami Shores Country Club (www.dreia. org). Search for REIAs nationally at www.nationalreia.com. Shameless plug: Rochelle LeCavalier will be presenting “Sure it is Cheap, But is it a Deal? Real Estate Analysis for Today’s Market” followed by live Q-and-A session at Dade Real Estate Investors Association Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at Miami Shores Country Club.

LeCavalier has an extensive background in land development, construction, mortgage banking, and real estate sales, marketing and management with more than 15 years experience in the industry. She is known as the “Pink Realtor” around South Florida where she and her team cheerfully serve the real estate needs of many clients. In addition, LeCavalier serves as Fund Manager for SISCO Limited Partners, a private equity fund that rehabilitates foreclosed properties and rents them via affordable housing programs in Broward County, and she is a licensed Real Estate Agent and an Accredited Residential Manager (IREM, ARM).

Mortgage Troubles? There Are Dignified Solutions to Foreclosure You may have done everything right, but in today’s housing market, it’s becoming more common for responsible homeowners to find themselves with an unaffordable mortgage. If you or someone you know is facing foreclosure and doesn’t know what to do, know that there are better options and very strong reasons to pursue them. Through the new Home Affordable Foreclosure Alternatives Program, or HAFA, you may be eligible for a $3,000 incentive to avoid foreclosure by pursuing a SHORT SALE or deed-in-lieu, two dignified foreclosure alternatives. I’ve written a report that details how you can benefit from these foreclosure alternatives. You can download the report here:

SMALL BUSINESS MARKETING

Seven easy ways to make your website more effective BY Wendy Crocquet Lieber | wendy@athena-marketing.com

People are always asking me what they can do to make their website more effective. Unfortunately by the time they get to me, they have usually spent thousands of dollars with other firms and ended up with nothing more than a slightly better version of what they already had, leaving them frustrated with very little budget left. Here are seven easy things you can do to make your website MORE of a revenue generator and LESS of an expense: 1. Install Google Analytics on your site. You can’t manage what you can’t measure. If you can’t answer basic questions like “what is your bounce rate?” or “what is your highest exit page?” then you are missing out on important data. You should look at your analytics weekly just like you look at other key sales and financial data. It’s free. 2. Make sure you have the information and the ability to access your site. Your hosting information, your FTP information, your content management access, etc. I meet so many companies that have no way to update their website because they never got the information and their webmaster is long gone. This can be costly yet easily avoidable. 3. Have a well-crafted offer designed specifically for your audience in exchange for an e-mail or other key information. (Example: a monthly newsletter with great content, weekly promotions/discounts, etc.) Test different offers to see what generates the best response. This is an effective way to build an online database to communicate with frequently. 4. Make it easy for people to contact you. Have a way for people to contact you on every page. A simple

form that generates an e-mail and/or phone number is best. 5. Have a clear goal of what action you want people to take on every page. Whether you want to collect e-mail addresses, register online or make a call, each page of your website should have a “Call To Action” front and center. Review your analytics to determine if your visitors are taking the desired actions. If they aren’t, then you will know it isn’t clear or it isn’t compelling, so you can change it. (Refer to No. 3 to make sure you have a compelling offer.) 6. Cut your text in half. Don’t fill every part of the screen with text on the main pages of your site. It won’t get read. If people want to read more, give them a way to click through to access more in-depth copy. And make sure your copy is written from your audience’s perspective and not your own. (Bonus: Use images and video throughout your site.) 7. Be the champion of your website in your organization. If there isn’t at least one champion, then your website will never be a useful part of your marketing and sales strategy. Take it on and start learning by reading articles, blogs and books on website strategy. Be the champion and start to generate exciting results. Your website is an important reflection of your company, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming or expensive. There is no greater cost effective, measureable marketing and sales tool that gives immediate gratification than the Internet. So start using it! For more information, e-mail me at wendy@athena-marketing.com or leave a comment on my blog http:// wendylieber.wordpress.com/.
