Chaminade-Madonna Lions are ready to take on tough teams ChaminadeMadonna High CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com School has a strong football program, one of the Lions’ strongest in years. But this season, the team is facing one of the toughest schedules possible for a high school team. Most high school teams can expect to face one or two top-notch teams in a season, but the Lions face powerhouse, nationally ranked teams almost every week. Tyler Tate, an assistant football coach for Chaminade-Madonna, said the Lions are ready for this season. “We need to stay focused and we need to avoid injuries. We expect to have a winning season,” Tate said. The Lions will begin with a kickoff classic against Deerfield Beach. They open the season playing against Miami Central High School. They will then come up against Miramar, Blanche Ely, American Heritage School Plantation (which will be televised on ESPN), Booker T. Washington, Flanagan, Doral Academy, University School and other solid teams. The Lions are hoping for a return to the state playoffs. Last year, they lost the state championship to Trinity Christian Academy from Jacksonville. While Chaminade-Madonna has a strong football tradition, the main focus is on education. “We want all our players to go to college,” Tate said. “We want all our players to do well academically.” Some of the strongest players at Chaminade-Madonna include 15 already committed to Division I programs. Xavier Williams, a receiver, will play for Alabama, and Shaun Shivers, a running back, will play for Auburn. Wide receiver Marvin Williams will play for Kentucky, and Logan Giordano, a receiver, will play for Eastern Michigan. Sebastian Sainterling, an offensive lineman, will play for the University of South Florida, and wide receiver Akeem Hanes will play for Kentucky. Other players are also being recruited by highly regarded college football teams. Quarterback Daelen Menard is being recruited by Temple University. The team’s practices are well run and efficient, like big college programs. “We will take our players on visits to college programs and watch BY DAVID VOLZ

what those teams are doing in practice and we see that we do many of the same things,” Tate said. During a recent practice, the Lions were very enthusiastic and were executing their plays well. They are looking forward to the coming season. Winning is an important goal for the Lions, but so is taking care of the

players. “We have a family atmosphere on the team. The school is 100 percent behind us,” he said. This year, Chaminade-Madonna expects to have lights for its athletic field. They are not sure exactly when they will be installed but the goal is to have them for early games in the season.

Hollywood Brewing Co. hosts BrewMaster competition

Local craft brewery, Hollywood Brewing Co., is hosting a brew master competition in September. The brewery will select six brew master contestants, who will have an opportunity to brew their personal recipes at Hollywood’s BrewPub, a microbrewery

on Hollywood Beach, located at 290 N. Broadwalk.organic-brewery Hollywood Brewing Co. hosts BrewMaster competition Each contestant will brew their personal recipe, using Hollywood BrewPub’s fully-automated equipment, and have their beer sold at the BrewPub on the beach for two weeks. They’ll supply premium quality basic malt and hop varieties at no charge– the same ingredients they use in their personal brews. If you have particularly unique ingredients in your recipe, you are welcome to bring those as well. Fifty percent of sales of each contes-

tant’s brew goes back to the original brewer, and at least 10 percent of sales will go towards Save the Manatee Club. Memorial's oncology rehab program receives accreditation

Accreditation by CARF, an independent, nonprofit organization focused on advancing the quality of services provided consumers, involves an ongoing process of review, onsite examinations and adherence to rigorous organizational and program standards. It includes specialized training for staff, specific medical protocols and the implementation of policies that demonstrate value, risk management and service delivery with the highest emphasis on patient safety and quality indicators. “The recognition of our efforts by an organization of this stature is a testament to those who have helped build the oncology rehab program,” said Dr. James Salerno, a boardcertified physician who oversees the treatment of post-transplant, cancer and medically complex cases. Organizations earn accreditation for a three-year period and must submit yearly reports that detail improvements. Holly Neher is top female quarterback for Hollywood Hills BY DAVID VOLZ

Holly Neher is a highly regarded dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com quarterback for the Hollywood Hills High School football team. While other young women have played tackle football in Broward County, they played more limited roles on their teams. Even if Neher, a junior, does not become the starting quarterback she will likely play a significant role on the team this season. Holly Neher takes the field. She is second quarterback on Hollywood Hills team, but could become a starter. Hollywood Hills football coach Brandon Graham believes she has great potential and said it is possible she could become a starting quarterback. Graham was the coach of the flag football team. Right now Neher is in line behind Ramon Jones for quarterback. Neher just loves being a part of the team. “I played football quarterback for the flag football team and, after the season ended, I wanted to continue playing football,” she said. Neher approached Graham about CORRESPONDENT

playing tackle football. After some consideration, he decided to allow her to try the game. Neher did not ask for any special consideration, she wanted to compete as any other player. “I love football,” said Neher. “We are like a family. The players treat me like a sister and the coaches are like dads.” During practices, defensive players are not permitted to tackle the quarterback. Neher realizes that during a game situation, she may take some hard hits. “I am ready for it. When I get tackled. I will get up and get back in the game.” Neher wants to do her best and hopes to make a contribution to the team. She is 5’2 in height and weighs about 175. She has an enthusiastic attitude toward the game. During the winter, she plays goalie on the soccer team. Coach Graham said Ramon is the leading quarterback now but Neher is a strong contender. During a recent scrimmage she played well and demonstrated confidence and determination.

Humane Society introduces new reading program for youth A new program called “Book Pals,” will kick off in September at the Humane Society of Broward County. Run through the education department, it allows kids to sign up for three-month sessions of reading to the dogs at the shelter. Targeted at ages 6 to 15, kids in this unique program will get the chance to practice their reading skills while helping the shelter dogs. By providing gentle voices as they read and utilizing calming signals the HSBC staff will teach, it’s a win-win! The young readers must first attend a Book Pals orientation in order to learn the meaning of a dog’s body language. Before starting the program, the registered child and parent or guardian must attend a Book Pals orientation to learn about dogs’ body language – important information for one-on-one sessions. The cost of the three-month program is $10 per session. Children will bring their own book, their Book Pals badge, a blanket to sit on,and a love for reading! A special Book Pals blanket will be available for purchase as well. Registration can be found at www.

'Stage Kids' after-school program by Art and Culture Center starts September 14th Stage Kids puts students on center stage to perform musical selections ranging anywhere from the classics to today’s top hits! The recently opened Concourse A includes five gates and will service both domestic and international flights. So far, Southwest Airlines and Silver Airways operate out of the five gates, but eventually more airlines will be added. The project cost $200 million to build and includes 300,000 square feet. Courses B and C are getting renovated and terrazzo flooring is being installed. This project is expected to be completed in the fall. The expansion of Terminal 4 at Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport includes replacement of the original gates, construction connector from Terminal 3 and an updated baggage handling system. Terminal Four construction is close to completion. The western phase is ready and open and the eastern phase will be open by the end of the year. The work is administrated by the Broward County Aviation Department, which operates Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and is funded from revenues generated by the airport, not Broward County taxpayers.

As a child in a 98% Jewish neighborhood, my strongest memory of going to Temple is of the old men shushing us kids when we came to services on the holidays. When I first moved to Hollywood and was searching for a spiritual home, my first visit was to Temple Beth El, the beautiful structure on Northeast 14 th Avenue. And my first impression there was that I was welcome. Welcome is a basic tenet in the Temple, explained Lauren Kettler Gold, Marketing Coordinator, noting that lots of kids in their pre-school and many visitors to the temple are not even Jewish. It’s all over their website and it’s felt by any visitor walking in the door. Founded in Hollywood in 1957, Temple Beth El’s leadership describes the temple as a progressive congregation, blending Jewish values, study,

The coach of the Hollywood PAL Eagles, he is most proud about helping boys achieve personal success. “I want these players to become student athletes and I want them to learn the fundamentals of life,” Clowers said. “For me, it is always about the kids.” The Hollywood PAL Eagles offer a competitive football program. It is made up of eight teams, based on age and weight and is for players ages 5 to 14. The Eagles play home games, have practice at Boggs Field and compete against other city teams in the American Youth Football League. “We teach discipline, respect and the importance of academics,” Clowers said. Eagles Coach Felix Soto also believes in encouraging boys to become responsible men. He believes that participation in a demanding team sport like football can help in the process. The players are expected to train hard during practice and do well in other areas of life. “Our focus is on academics and we want all our players to do well in

school,” Soto said. “We want all our players to get a college education.” The Eagles season has begun and the team recently traveled to Coral Springs to play the Coral Springs Chargers. The coaches and players on all the Eagles teams are hoping for successful seasons.

Missouri transplant takes community challenge to invite neighbors to a potluck BY JENNIFER LOVE EDITOR & PUBLISHER

Over 30 neighbors show up to welcome the Walsh family to Hollywood Hills In the June 2017 issue, I wrote an editorial to challenge Hollywood Gazette readers to share a meal with a neighbor. Preferably someone they hadn’t gotten to know yet or wanted to know better. I grew a little disenchanted after a couple of weeks passed when I didn’t hear from anyone– until I received the best response I could hope for from Hollywood Hills resident Stephanie Walsh.

"Our block looks so different to me now. What once looked like a simple block of houses is now a thriving and welcoming community of friends.” She wrote, “This year my husband Matt, our 2 year old son Jack; I moved to Hollywood, Florida from Kansas City, Missouri where I was born and raised. After getting settled and meeting a few of our neighbors in passing with general greetings and introductions, we started missing the comforts of knowing everyone on our block, their families and the occasional borrowing of a ladder, sharing a cup of coffee or sugar in a pinch. After reading your article in the Hollywood Gazette, I was excited to accept the challenge! Jack and I put an 20

invitation together inviting everyone on our block over for a potluck BBQ. We went door to door which made me nervous! I figured at minimum a few people we’d met in passing would stop by and say hello. What I didn’t expect was for 30 people to show up side dishes in hand! I couldn’t believe it! Almost all of our neighbors came! People shared countless tips for fun in the sun with our little one, area favorites, and a few stories of their unique cultural backgrounds. It’s interesting that very few people that we’ve met were born and raised in Florida. Most, like me are transplants. Connecticut, Cuba, Dominica, Israel, Arizona, Arkansas, Haiti and of course Missouri were just a few of the diverse backgrounds that all came together in our kitchen! After doing this for over a decade and in the age where elected officials at the highest level refer to the media as the “enemy of the people,” it’s easy to feel underappreciated sometimes. But Stephanie’s letter absolutely moved me to tears. Not only did she take the challenge, she brought her entire block together! I am issuing the same challenge again. If you complete the challenge and send me your story, I will share it online and in the paper to inspire the community. Even if your story is just that you thought about it, but didn’t work up the courage, I’d still love to hear from you. I went to visit Stephanie and her family a few weeks ago and met some of her neighbors in the above photo. I was greeted with a warm hug and cold water.

"We got carried away in conversation, and some of the folks had to leave so we couldn’t get everyone in the picture, " said Stephanie Walsh.

Turns out many of the neighbors on this particular block have been pretty tight-knit for years. I met Don and Jo Kneuer who have been happily married almost 39 years! I learned that Don has in impressive miniature model train collection and that if Jack doesn’t have his nap by 2 or 3 p.m., he’s pretty unhappy about it! As I left, I was offered an avocado from one of their trees which I happily took home to enjoy. After travelling to the Middle East this past June, I assert that face-to-face communication is the most important way for folks to connect, create community and foster cooperation. And while sometimes it may seem we’re more divided than ever, I know in my heart

we have more in common than than those who seek to divide us would want us to believe. Connected communities come together and offer support in times of trouble; they strengthen the fabric of the city we love. “Having old friends is the politics of last resort,” notes author and historian Timothy Snyder in his latest book. “And making new ones is the first step toward change.” If you take the challenge, email me at jennifer@hollywoodgazette.com. Casa Pellegrino: A Haven in Hollywood

BY KENT WALLACE CORRESPONDENT Felice and Marilena Pellegrino moved to Hollywood (from Venezuela, via Italy) in 2013—a case of love at first sight… According to their son, Alessandro, the couple were charmed by the quaint feel of Hollywood and its cozy proximity—nestled between behemoths Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Felice and Marilena not only moved to Hollywood, but they gifted us with a significant slice of Italy and the Mediterranean by building their Casa Pellegrino boutique hotel right off the Hollywood Beach. And we’re the better for it. Casa Pellegrino is located at 2007 N. Ocean Drive (a block from the beach and Broadwalk). This charming villa styled inn drips of old-world charm (arches, columns, fountains, terrazzo) while providing new- world conveniences (Wi-Fi, flat screen television, AC, kitchenettes, microwave ovens and even toasters). Trip Advisor has named this award winning gem number 1 in Customer Service (Hollywood), 2 nd (in all of Florida) and 4 th in the entire United States! And it’s really no surprise. This mamma, papa and son celebration of famiglia is genuine. “We consider our guests members of our family,” Alessandro says with pride, “We try and

cater to every need and whim.” Built on the site of the Tropical Breeze Motel (circa 1947), Casa Pellegrino was erected from the ground up with hands on involvement by the family. Felice (a developer/engineer) designed and then worked in tandem with the General Contractor. Marilena (with her interior design background) worked her magic in fabulous flourishes—while Alessandro, with a degree in Hospitality Management (Cornell University) took on web-design and the daily nuances of running a world-class resort. “We are in the process of opening an on premise restaurant,” Alessandro advised this writer while pouring me a taste of the family’s home-made Limoncello (in this case a 100-year- old recipe from the old country). “We’ll serve all our family favorites—pasta, pizza, everything created with old school embellishments…” Each room at Casa Pellegrino represents a Mediterranean Island whether Italy, Greece or Spain. Such themes as Santorini, Ibiza and Sicily (to name but three of the dozen) reflect their namesakes in colors, appointments and flair. Casa Pellegrino is also ideally designed to host weddings, reunions, musical events et al. Local Chamber Leads the Way, Plans to Renovate Office Building by Hollywood Circle The Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will continue the economic development trend around the City of Hollywood by investing $60,000 on its office building. The renovations, scheduled to start late September, on the two-story building on the corner of US-1 and Taylor St., will expand the reach of the ongoing transformation around the Circle, in Downtown Hollywood and some of the adjacent residential neighborhoods. “The Chamber wants to be a partner in economic development and there is nothing like leading by example and modeling the way! This is part of business leadership and we hope that our transformation will encourage and inspire others to invest in the beautification of the US-1 corridor…One step, one corridor at a time,” said Anne Hotte, Hollywood Chamber’s CEO & Executive Director. “AIA is in good shape, US-1 is next, and in the meantime Dixie Highway and State Road 7 are creating the infrastructure necessary for healthy and sustainable development.” “As we see developers invest in our Downtown and how stunning Hollywood Circle (formerly Block 55) now looks…and the new residents, visitors and commerce it will bring to our Downtown… there is no limit to what Hollywood can become “ she adds. Thirty-six (36) board members, representing a multitude of industries and businesses from all over Hollywood, voted unanimously for the beatification initiative, allowing the Chamber to commit to the greater good of the community. The renovation plans include replacing windows with hurricane impact resistant glass, repainting the building with new colors, improving the surrounding landscape, removing the awnings and providing new signage and lights. Built in 1996 on city owned land, the 3,500-square-foot building also houses Costa Bella Realty Group and Idea 180. The Chamber hopes that other businesses will follow suit and be inspired by the transformation. 22

But Orangebrook, the largest of Hollywood's three municipal golf courses has seen better days. The greens need upgrades and the fairways have been losing money for years. But during a recent Park East Civic Association meeting, a new conceptual site plan for Orangebrook was unveiled. The plan is very preliminary in nature but an important goal is to preserve 263 acres as green space. And this space would contain no fewer than 36 holes of golf. The ad hoc Orangebrook Revitalization Committee, which was formed by the Park East Civic Association and claims the Orangebrook Golf Course within its geographic boundaries, is seeking to make improvements to the golf course. The site plan was prepared and donated to the Park East Civic Association by the Nicklaus Design Company. They are well known for designing golf courses. The plan is in response to proposals by developers to place hotels, sports complexes, stores, a major water theme park and other buildings on a substantial portion of the Orangebrook property. Currently the site has two 18 hole golf courses and a clubhouse building which includes a banquet room and a casual restaurant. Orangebrook offers a pleasant environment for a round of golf and is oriented toward people from the community who enjoy the sport. "The plan unveiled at the meeting was an illustration of one of many possible concepts and site plans for Orangebrook's possible future, if the City of Hollywood funds its restoration," said Claire Garrett, chairperson of the BY DAVID VOLZ CORRESPONDENT

Orangebrook Revitalization Committee. It includes two 18-hole golf courses. One would be a championship level course for serious golfers and tournaments as well as a par three golf course for a more casual experience. It would take less time to play a round on the par three course and would be routed in such a way that golfers could choose to play nine holes rather than the full 18 holes. Proposed plans include tennis courts and a swimming pool, a walking and exercise trail on the Park Road side of the property that could tie into future greenways linking it to other green spaces in Hollywood. A redeveloped clubhouse and an upscale restaurant were also proposed. Park East Civic Association's plan envision a golf academy for people who want to become more proficient at golf and the driving range would remain in place. The cost for the new development of the two new golf courses is estimated at $11 million. It could be financed by a revenue bond or a general obligation bond. This figure does not include other non-golf amenities such as the clubhouse, swimming pool or tennis courts. The Orangebrook plan addresses the need to store excessive amounts of storm runoff water, which will protect surrounding neighborhoods from flooding in their homes. The site plan includes more lakes and ponds, planned to be able to receive excessive storm water runoff. It would allow people to play on courses immediately after a heavy rain. A new type of turf grass requiring less pesticides, fungicides and fertilizer would be used. “The mission of our Committee is to make the Orangebrook Golf Course economically and environmentally sustainable,” Garrett said.

$1.3M waterfront lot sold in Hollywood for steep discount Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate sales associate Alyssa Morgan represented the buyers in a $1.3 million residential transaction, a nearly 50 percent discount from the original asking price of $2.46 million which included permits and architectural plans. The buyers plan to begin construction on the home by the end of the year. The property closing comes as home buyers increasingly look north of Miami for their home search. According to the Multiple Listing Service, in June 2017, luxury property sales in northern luxury markets such as Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood increased by up to 50 percent year over year, compared to Miami Beach which saw a 10 percent decline in property sales throughout

the same time frame.
