Hollywood scavenger hunt runs Sept. 11-20 Winning participant to be awarded $500 by Jennifer Ann Love Publisher, Hollywood Gazette Do you think you know everything about Hollywood? Or maybe you'd like to learn all about the city's beautiful places, history and experience it for yourself but you've not found the time. The Great Hollywood Scavenger Hunt is set for Friday, Sept. 11 - Sunday Sept. 20 and it's a family-friendly, fun, free way to experience all the city has to offer! Most of the people who competed in the last two hunts said that they didn't do it for the cash prize -- they said it was just for the fun of it. Whatever your motivation for playing, we don't know anyone who couldn't use an extra $500 bucks next month. The scavenger hunt will take you on a journey, whether you experience it solo or with your family or friends -- from finding a group of strangers on the beach to form a conga line or taking a selfie with a Hollywood police officer, to finding art and nature throughout the city's parks, Downtown and Beach.
Finally, there will be a wrap up party the week after the hunt ends for the participants to meet each other, celebrate and build community. Participation is free and everyone with a smartphone can play. To get started, download the free app "Scavify" on your phone and search
for the Hollywood Hunt. Missions will appear in the app at 7 a.m. on Sept. 11 until Sept. 20. Visit www. hollywoodscavengerhunt.com for more information.

Hollywoof dog park now open in East Hollywood Shelby Gronvold loves the CORRESPONDENT dvolz@hollywoodgazette.com new Hollywoof Dog Park. She came to the grand opening event August 29th with her dog Sophie and enjoyed spending time with fellow dog lovers. “This park is absolutely amazing. It is a place where I can take my dog to run and play and meet other dogs. I love it,” said Gronvold. Theresa Sisto also likes Hollywoof and enjoyed the grand opening ceremonies. She brought her dog named Hollywood. “This park is very nice,” said Sisto. The Hollywoof Dog Park is located at Stan Goldman Memorial Park in Hollywood. It includes about 20,000 square feet. There is a larger space for big dogs to play and a smaller space for little dogs to play. It includes tunnels and hoops to the dogs to play on. It is a place for dogs and their owners to play in a comfortable environment. Bioswales are an innovative feature of the park. They are designed to collect and clean overflow rain water from the parking lot area. “The bioswales are a pilot project at this park,” said Walter Wernecke, project architect. The grand opening included a performance by the Junkanoo Band. Mayor Peter Bober and Commissioner Traci Callari spoke on the benefits of the new park for Hollywood residents. Chuck Ellis, director of parks, recreation and cultural arts praised people who worked to make the park a reality. Then city leaders participated in a ribbon cutting. Bober said he was glad to see the park open. “This will be great for Hollywood residents. I have wanted to see this park built for a long time. This will provide a space for people to bring their dogs,” said Bober. Commissioner Patricia Asseff said, “I love this park. It is a great asset and a beautiful park for Hollywood,” she said. Vice Mayor Kevin Biederman said, “I think this park demonstrates the commitment Hollywood has to provide services to residents.” After the ribbon cutting, residents and their dogs began to enjoy the park. The dogs romped and played and their owners enjoyed the opportunity to socialize. Leslie Atelus and her children Nate and Hannah brought their dog Sheba. “This is a wonderful place for dogs,” said Leslie. Katrina Mays brought her dog Bear to the event. “I love this park. I will bring my dog here,” she said. Matthew and Tatjana Sheppard brought their dog Gnarlee. “I am excited about this park and I am glad we have a dog part in the east area of Hollywood.

Rescuers Without Borders gets established in Hollywood BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
Rescuers Without Borders, an international medical humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving lives around the world, is operating out of its first U.S. location in Downtown Hollywood. Rescuers Without Borders opened March 30 at 2028 Harrison St., Suite 206, where it shares office space with one of its local sponsors, Smart Security Camera, a home and business security system installation company. The main mission of Rescuers Without Borders is to save lives when catastrophe strikes. Over the past decade, the organization has saved more than 35,000 lives in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. Following rapid-response efforts in times of natural disaster, RWB also gives support to refugees until the affected country can find long-term solutions, by providing shelter, water, food and clothing, as needed, for large numbers of people, as well as connecting between service providers and those who need help. Services provided by Rescuers Without Borders include comfort and reassurance to people who have undergone traumatic events. The organization also provides vaccination programs in areas where standard medical practice is not available, as well as basic hygiene education and preventive medical and sanitary measures in places that are susceptible to outbreaks of disease, malnutrition and other serious problems. “We really wanted to be part of Hollywood because we wanted to connect with the community leaders in the city,” said Samantha Young, local RWB event coordinator and treasurer of the board of directors. “We really like the community down here.” In a short period of time, the local RBW branch has attracted interest from businesses and individuals who want to get involved, either indirectly as financial supporters or hands-on as volunteers, in the organization’s objectives to save lives during natural disasters, provide health care and restore faith in life regardless of citizenship, religion or origins. Established in 2005 by founders Arie Levy and Guy Senbel, Rescuers Without Borders was created to
provide assistance to the local population in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Originating out of France and Israel, the organization now boasts more than a dozen international hubs with hundreds of rescuers, emergency medical technicians, nurses, psychologists, ophthalmologists and doctors who are available any day of the year to aid lives. Notable RWB supporters include Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, actor Richard Gere and the Dali Lama. Rescuers Without Borders held a launching cocktail event June 11 in Downtown Hollywood to celebrate its official recognition as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the U.S. The successful fundraiser hosted by FACE Restaurant and Bar featured a live auction. The community showed its support with attendance by Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober, sponsors, funders and local businesses. An event held in March to celebrate Rescuers Without Borders’ kick-off in Hollywood also was a huge success. Young said the primary function of the Downtown Hollywood location is to raise funds for the international organization, along with awareness. “All the money that we raise is all going to the same place,” she said. In addition to holding fundraising events, Rescuers Without Borders eventually will be recruiting volunteers, particularly medical professionals to participate in rescue and aid missions or to provide training in CPR and first aid to new volunteers. “People have already expressed interest in volunteering,” Young said. “Right now we’re trying to get the word out about our organization and fundraising.” Rescuers Without Borders is particularly concerned about the wellbeing of children who are orphans, deprived or living in war zones. The organization provides ophthalmic exams and glasses to indigent children and supports several orphanages by providing water, electricity, furniture and regular medical exams for the orphans. For more information on Rescuers Without Borders, visit www.rescuerswithout-borders.org, call Samantha Young at 954-319-6200 or email her at samantha.y@rescuers-without-borders. org.

Downtown mural celebrates the art of community BY CARON CONWAY
FEATURE CORRESPONDENT
caron@hollywoodgazette.com
A striking photo mural featuring the faces of some 250 creative individuals who live or work in Hollywood has been catching the eye of passers-by since it was installed on the exterior of a downtown building on June 13. The Inside Out Downtown Hollywood mural also has garnered international attention with its selection on the global Inside Out website as one of the best projects. The Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Inside Out Downtown Hollywood project, a largescale black-and-white mural adorning a two-story building at 1740 S. Young Circle, is part of a global photography art project and one of the ways in which community groups and organizations are commemorating Broward County’s centennial through Broward 100 – Celebrating the Art of Community. Those who have been directly involved with the local project say it also brings attention to Downtown Hollywood’s position as a vibrant arts, music and entertainment district. Tina Buccellato, owner/executive director of downtown-based Muzart Creative Arts Studio, said Hollywood is now “on the map” in a global sense through its involvement in the world’s largest participatory art project. Long after weather conditions have razed the temporary mural, it will continue to live on, with each Inside Out installation documented, archived and exhibited online to capture the collective messages of community groups through headshots of their individual members. Those featured on the local mural – including Buccellato, her 14-year-old daughter Savannah, and Buccellato’s entire staff and their children – join over 200,000 people from more than 180 countries who have taken part in Inside Out since it was initiated in 2007. The project is inspired by renowned Parisian street artist JR, who uses his camera to show the world its true face by pasting photos of the human face across massive canvases. The local photo portraits, each measuring 36 inches by 53 inches, are pasted on the building that’s owned and managed by Downtown Hollywood-based developer MG3 Hollywood LLC and sits across the street from the ArtsPark at Young Circle and steps away from the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, where the professional photo shoots took place. Participants range in age from 6-month-old babies to octogenarians.
“All types of creatives participated, from artists, crafters, writers, dancers, to creative business people, activists, photographers, and local actors and musicians,” said Jill Weisberg, art specialist/project manager of the Hollywood CRA’s Downtown Hollywood Mural Project. Weisberg said the response to Inside Out Downtown Hollywood, which was
organized by Broward 100, the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and the Art and Culture Center, was “fantastic.” “People were really excited when they saw their face up on the building, and we had plenty of passers-by tell us how awesome it looked and what a great project it was while we were installing,” Weisberg said. Inside Out installations have appeared on walls, sidewalks, streets, skyscrapers and historic buildings in over 100 countries. Broward 100 is one of the largest participating organizations in the global art project. Inside Out Broward showcases the human spirit of Broward’s residents and hardworking community groups and tells their stories to the community and the world. Buccellato called the Downtown Hollywood mural a source of pride. “I think it’s beautiful. I love the simplicity of it,” she said. “It speaks to
everyone, and it just brings our entire community together.” To learn more about the Broward 100 Inside Out project, visit www.broward. org/Broward100/InsideOut or email Broward100@broward.org.

Mayor Bober will not seek re-election in 2016
Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2016. He wants to pursue other interest an activities. “I have accomplished a number of positive things as the mayor Hollywood and I want to do other things,” said Bober. He is proud that during his time in office a number of financial reforms and pension reforms took place. He is pleased that a number of new parks have been built in Hollywood and that there is more decorum at commission meetings. Bober is an attorney and plans to spend more time with his family. Sen. Eleanor Sobel (D) issued a statement on September 1 regarding the news that the post for Mayor of Hollywood will be open in 2016.
"I have been receiving a number of inquiries about this seat. Given my love for Hollywood, my years of service to this community and the fact that I am termlimited from the State Senate, I certainly understand the inquiries. However, given my work as a Chair of a vital Senate committee and the critical nature of the upcoming special session, I am forestalling any decision until after the legislative session is completed in March," said Sobel.

Broward County offers new program to deter student recidicism For too many young people in Broward County, school can be a pipeline to prison. And this has many Broward County school leaders concerned. The Broward County public school district has developed a program known as Preventing Recidivism through Opportunity Mentoring Intervention Support and Education (PROMISE). The goal is to prevent young people from being caught up the law enforcement system. The Broward County School District had a high number of arrests of students. Many of the young people involved had committed relatively minor offenses that in the past might not have involved law enforcement. Students were being arrested for offenses such as fighting, showing disrespect to teachers, small theft and other minor incidents. But this would often mean an arrest and involvement with the juvenile criminal system and a criminal record. “At the county level we needed to address the fact that we were arresting children for behaviors of young people at a certain stage of development,” said Michaelle Pope, executive director of student support initiatives “In 2011 we found that Broward County had the highest number of school related arrests for any county in Florida.” Through the PROMISE program, if a young person commits an offense that might have involved law enforcement, the student is

Overall, 383 artists submitted 1,084 entries to be judged. Winners of the cash prizes will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, September 18 from 6 to 9 pm. All artists residing in the state of Florida were invited to submit entries of contemporary artwork for consideration in this Biennial.
