Ambassador Assumes Pastoral Role in Hollywood

Guy Hewitt, former ambassador to the United Kingdom for Barbados, ended his public service early to assume duties as the parish priest for St. James Episcopal Church in Hollywood, Florida.

Known for his dynamic preaching style, the London-born, Barbadosraised minister was welcomed by the Rt. Rev. Peter Eaton, Bishop of Southeast Florida, at an installation service on June 23, 2019. Bishop Peter, who shares British-Barbadian links, consider Hewitt to be a “valued addition to the Diocese and Caribbean diaspora in Florida.”

born Ambassador, Hewitt’s public sector career included assignments with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Commonwealth of Nations, and the University of the West Indies.

Ambassador Hewitt trained for priesthood in London and, 15 years ago, was ordained in Barbados but never before held a full-time parish assignment. Fr. Guy considers his appointment to St James to be the ‘fulfillment’ of a “lifelong calling to serve God and His people.” He lists his priorities as “youth ministry, community mobilization, and social justice outreach to the needy and marginalized."

Anthony Collins Named South Broward High School’s New Football Coach

Last year the Bulldogs ended the season with a 2-8. This year they’ll compete in a tough district that includes powerhouse programs such as Miramar, McArthur, and American.

Top players for South Broward team include Jaydin Brown, Khaleeb Wiggins, Tiwan McCloud, Karim Moise and Jameel Doster.

They were actually the first Hollywood Civic Association I came to know, during the debates over the proposed uses of the Sunset Golf Course, and now under new leadership, they promise to keep their voices and their opinions heard.

We met with the Morningstar family, of the eponymous jeweler downtown, and heard a great family history, which we share with you here.

We spoke with the Hollywood branch of the Lions Club International to see what this newest local chapter is up to. Lots of good stuff.

Lions Unleashed in Hollywood!

By Benjamin Paley What are lions doing in the City of Hollywood? They're not eating all of our livestock that is for sure.

These lions are unleashed, and they do roar, but they represent a different kind of power.

The Lions Club of Hollywood is a group of businessmen and women from throughout Hollywood who come together once or twice a month for community service and regular meetings.

They ask members to give one of three things: time, expertise, or money.

The Hollywood Gazette met with Richard Aube, former president of the Hollywood Lion’s Club, and Asaf “Ace” Mengelgrein. Both men own local businesses, but they also understand the value of community service.

Mengelgrein works as a real estate developer and manager. Aube is a real estate broker at For Life Realty. He also owns the Coral House Hotel.

The Lion’s Club is an international organization founded in 1917

by Melvin Jones. It is a charitable organization.

Why are they called The Lions Club: because lions are the “king of the jungle.”

There are Lion’s Club chapters all over the world - numbering more than 200 - with a total world wide membership around 1.5 million. In fact, some of the international groups have membership fees as high as $10,000 per year.

Here in Hollywood, the membership fees are not so high. Members pay an annual membership fee of $120.

managing director of the company led the research and effort and determined that the tower should go in at West Lake Park. Monetti made a presentation at a recent Commission meeting. He said that it would cost less and be more practical to place the tower in West Lake rather than putting antenna equipment on the CIRC. He believed it would be easier to maintain the equipment at West Lake Park. The research found that the radio signal would work with at both the CIRC and the West Lake location.

Under agreement, both parties would accept the findings of the consultant.

People who live near West Lake Park have said they believe a tower should not be located there because it would damage the overall appearance of the area. They have attended both Hollywood Commission and Broward Commission meeting to state their feelings.

The Broward Commission has maintained that work on the tower should have begun by now and that the West Lake site is better. But they were willing agree to hire a consultant to study the matter.

Commissioner Caryl Shuham said she was disappointed with the report and believed that the consultant did not do independent research on the cost of building and maintaining the tower. She believed the ILA agreement should be terminated. Mayor Josh Levy also said he was disappointed with the report.

Monetti said he stood by his research and that if it were done again, the results would be the same.

City of Hollywood Purchases New Fire Trucks The City of Hollywood will utilize funds from the General Obligation Bond to pay for some major purchases. During a recent meeting, the Commission agreed to a purchase order for two Pierce Fire Trucks and two rescue transport vehicles from Ten-8 Fire Equipment and Rev Technical Center. The total purchase amount is $1,799,912

Morningstar’s Jewelers: Five Generations of Making Hollywood Customers Shine

O

n 20th Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard is a giant mosaic diamond engagement ring. Is it because Downtown Hollywood, with its canopy of trees and dappled sunlight is so romantic? Maybe.

But look a little further, into the windows of the corner store, and you’ll see real diamond engagement rings -- and bracelets and bling and kinds of jewelry just begging for your attention, too.

Those are the wares of Morningstar's Jewelers, which has made that iconic corner sparkle since 1981, when company president Louis Morningstar moved his Jewelry Store and Pawn Shop from across the street on Tyler and 19th, where it had already been a Hollywood fixture for over 20 years.

And that’s just a fraction of the time the Morningstars have been buying and selling precious and semiprecious stones, jewels, metals and gems. The Morningstar -- nee Morgenstern -- family has actually been in the jewelry business since Louis’s great grandfather Henry arrived in Mobile, Alabama in 1881.

Today, 138 years later, Henry would surely be proud to know that not only his great grandson but also his great great grandson, Eric, who is now vice president, are carrying on the family business. Along with Louis’s wife Carole, the Morningstars have built the small bauble-trading and money-lending business into one of the most successful and thriving -- and longest-running -- companies in the city of Hollywood.

At the same time, the Morningstar family has become one of the most wellknown and generous benefactors of the Marti Huizenga Club Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County (formerly the Hollywood Boys & Girls Clubs) and other local charities. In fact, the Morningstars are winners of many awards and accolades for their neighbourly spirit and generosity.

We sat down with Louis and Eric to find out more about the business, but what we learned was the fascinating story of a true American Dream Come

Hollywood Gazette: So, Louis, Mobile, Alabama? Do tell!

Louis Morningstar: Well, it didn't really start out there. My great grandfather Henry Morgenstern arrived at Ellis Island in 1851, where they changed his name to Morningstar. He was a lumberman in Germany, but there were no trees in New York except in Central Park and he couldn’t cut them down, so he migrated to the south, doing different jobs and learning different trades.

He learned the jewelry business and he ended up in Mobile. He opened the first Morningstar’s Jewelers and Pawnbroking establishment.

He married and had two sons; one was Louie -- I’m named after him -- and one was Eddie. It was 1870, six years after the Civil War and they were a Jewish family in the heart of the Ku Klux Klan country.

That’s Henry, my great grandfather, in a rocking chair, and that’s Louie, my Great, great uncle, I think.

See the three spheres -- that’s still the sign for a pawn shop. And look at the wooden sidewalks, with troughs for the horses to drink.

Anyway, my grandfather married my grandmother and they had six children, four boys and two girls, my father was the oldest. They were close to New Orleans so when they got older, my dad and his brother Eddie, who also worked in the store, would go to New Orleans to gamble and carouse around -- and they lost the business.

My grandfather died when he was about 38 years old, and my father had to make a living to support his mother and five brothers and sisters.

He knew from working in the stores how to buy gold, so he went door to door, house to house and store to store, buying old gold and selling to refining companies, and trading pocket watches.

It was probably the world’s worst way to make a living but he took care of them.

He put his brother through MIT and he put his sister through the Boston Conservatory of Music, and since they were both up there in school, the whole family migrated to Boston to be together.

HG: That’s where you’re from, right?

LM: Yup. In Boston, my father met my mother, they had three children and he had two pawn shops. It was during the second world war and all the factories were involved in the war effort, making arms and uniforms and ammunition.

But when the soldiers and sailors returned, well, Boston was a big port, and they wanted to bring gifts home with them. So my father was buying black market costume jewelry from the factories in Attleboro and selling them to the men when they got off the ships.

My dad had parlayed all the cash into costume jewelry, but after the war came to a close in 1945, it was worth nothing. Now the people wanted real gold again.

And again, he lost everything. All that jewelry ended up in the garage in our house and it sat there for many years. Until 1954, actually, when we moved to Hollywood.

From 1954 to 1958, while I was in South Broward High School, my dad, in the old fashioned way to make a living, worked out of the trunk of his car, calling on mom and pop stores all over Florida, wheeling and dealing and selling that costume jewelry. Then he’d cut over to Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana,

Lots of hard times.

But always, always, the Morningstars got back on their feet.

Alabama, and cover every little cowtown from here to the panhandle. And every summer for three months I would go with him, carrying the bags from the store to the car from the car to the store and we would stay in $2.50 hotels and motels.

HG: Nobody can say you didn’t earn your success!

LM: Oh, I know both sides of the coin. We didn’t have two nickels to rub together.

So, in 1958, I graduated high school and he was on a trip and I wasn’t with him. He called me from Mobile, Alabama and said “I think I’m having a heart attack, please come and get me.”

I said “I’ll see how quickly I can get there.”

Well, in those days you had to go to Miami to get a plane to Atlanta and then another to Birmingham and another to Mobile and I didn’t know if he'd be in the hospital or dead or in the airport. But he was at the airport and I said do you want me to take you to the hospital and he said no, let’s go home.

So after traveling all day we got in the car and headed straight home and went directly to Memorial where they kept him for a week. Turned out that he did have a heart attack, and the doctors told him that he couldn’t travel any more.

So that was the end of that. And what did he know besides that?

So we opened up little shop across the street there, on 20th Avenue and Tyler Street.

HG: The little building that backs up to Anniversary Park, with the mural?

LM: That’s the one. It was owned by a man named Harry Harter. He was from Elkhart, Indiana. He was about six foot six and he wore a suit and tie every day. He was in his 70s back then.

He rented us this little store about 12 feet wide by 20 feet deep. We paid $60 a month rent and sometimes we fell four, five, six months in arrears. When we got some money we’d go to the office to pay, and he'd say “thank you, tell your father thank you, I appreciate it, and keep up the good work.”

for $5,000 and I ask ‘what’s this?’ And he says: it's deposits for everyone in the building.

Now, we moved across the street here in ‘81, and I made a big change in the business. We stopped taking everything, and moved to almost all jewelry.

So that's the history of the business and from ‘81 ‘til now we’ve had a nice run. I was fortunate.

But it was my dad that had the foresight. He said, someday it’ll happen.

Someday you will take in more money than what goes out, and you won’t have to borrow.

HG: Was he alive to see how successful the business has become?

HG: Sounds like a nice man.

LM: Yes, he was. I’ll never forget him.

Now, the First National Bank of Hollywood was across the street, in that beautiful building where Suntrust was.

It was a family-owned bank, and my dad and I would talk to them. When we started the business we asked if we could borrow some money, and they asked for collateral.

We had nothing. We need your money to stay in business, we told them.

We opened up a pawn shop and we don't have the money to loan out.

The first loan they gave us was $1000, on my dad's signature. And from there the story just gets better. At one point, I ended up owing them several million dollars.

But it was a family bank and it was a different time. It was very interesting and you could do things then you couldn’t even dream of now.

Eric Morningstar: Those were the days.

LM: Anyway, we’re in business for a few years there, and Mr. Harter passes away. He was a multi-millionaire, which is like being a billionaire today. And he had no wife and no family, and he left everything to his secretary. She didn’t want his properties. So the bank came to us and asked if we would like to buy the building, and we said sure, how much is it? And they said $43,000 and we said yes, will you lend us the money to buy it? And they said yes.

They loaned us the 42 thousand and we were able to pay the mortgage because we were collecting rents from everyone on the block and we were able to close on the building because we got a check from all the deposits of the renters and that was the beginning of our real estate ventures. We closed on the building with no money down.

As the other businesses would close we’d shift people around and we would take it over, and we would break through the walls and make our own store bigger. Eventually we took over the whole building. It was a very unique store because we took everything, we sold fine jewelry and we also sold bowling balls and sewing machine, guns, fishing equipment, musical instruments -- you name it, we did it. Remember, we had the whole block, so we had different 14

sections for everything.

HG: Was that typical for a pawn shop at the time?

LM: Yes, it was. We had price cards like we have now in the windows. We had it all and we grew.

But I always liked this location on the corner. There was another jeweler here, Wesson Jewelers, and they had been here for many years; they were also a father and son and I was friendly with them. They wanted to do a million dollars a year, and they want to expand to a mall to do it. I offered to buy the store, and they said they would never leave that location.

I said okay, but let me know if you change your mind.

One day in 1981, I looked outside, and they had put up a Going Out Of Business sign. They never called me.

I called my father and I said: Dad, you’re not going to believe this. And he said, go over there and get that store whatever you have to do.

Well, whatever they asked, if they wanted a million, I would have done it, because I was afraid that anyone else who might have come in would have been a better competitor than they were.

You see, they were the best competitor for us, a one-price store, and we were negotiable. Everybody liked to come in and buy for a better price with us.

So I came over here and I made a deal.

And I wanted to buy the building.

A few years earlier, they had redone the facade and the windows, it was beautiful.

So I figured they owned the building.

But they didn’t. I couldn’t believe they were paying rent!

They sold us all the showcases, wall

displays and the rest for only $25,000 -if I had to have had it fitted out, it would have been two, three, $400 thousand dollars! I said sure, I’ll take it. But they were paying rent to the First National Bank of St. Petersburg, the Trust Department, who were running it for the family that owned it.

I told the bank that I wanted to buy the building, but they said no. So I agreed to rent it but I asked for a lease of no less than 20 years. They gave me such a great lease that my lawyers said it was better than owning!

I made the deal, but my dad said, keep hounding them, so I did, and two years go by and I get a call from the bank and they said, ok, you win. You can have the building. I think they found out that they could never sell the building with me in it with that lease!

I asked how much they wanted for the building and she said $250,000.

Well, I would have given her $550k if I had to, but I said no no no that’s way too much! Well, that’s the pawnbroker in me! I said, I’ll go $150k, and I don’t have the money, I have to go borrow it.

Will you loan to me? She laughed and said no, I can’t loan it to you. We negotiated, we went back and forth and well, I ended up getting the building for $180 thousand.

So I went to my bank and said, I made a great deal but I don’t have the money, you can look, I’m overdrawn. I owe you several millions of dollars. But I need this building and they said, no we have regulations now, you have to come up with 20% and I said but I haven't got 36 thousand dollars. I had to get on my knees practically but they gave it to me, and I bought the building for nothing down, and my lawyer comes to the closing with me and he gives me a check

LM: Yes. He lived to be 85, he died in ‘91. We moved to this location on the corner in 1981, so he saw us here for ten years.

We’ve had five generations in the business, so far. My great grandfather, my grandfather, my father, me, and now Eric.

EM: And I have three sons. Maybe one of them, one day, will want to be in it too.

HG: What if none of them do?

LM: Eric will have to decide then -hopefully after they go to college. But they have to make their own decision.

Eric’s sister was also a part owner of the company, but she gave her share to her brother. When she went off to college I never thought she’d never come back, but she practiced in law NYC and they burnt her out. Then she got married, had three children, and chose not to work in the business.

Eric got his undergrad degree in business management in Arizona, then went on to study at the Gemological Institute of America in NYC, the heart of the jewelry business. He holds a certification in Gemology. He grew up in the business and has been working with me for 22 years.

So that’s the story of the Morningstars in Hollywood.

HG: And it’s a great story.

Five Generations. Many locations.

Lots of hard times. But always, always, the Morningstars got back on their feet.

There’s a playground with their name on it at Temple Sinai in the center of the city. And they charge only five percent or less on their loans, when the law allows them to charge up to 25. Why? “It’s how we can help people,” said Eric Morningstar. “For many years, people looked down on pawn shops, but we help people that can’t go to a bank, don’t have homes for collateral, who are living paycheck to paycheck. And we work with our clients to help them get their stuff back.”

Going forward, “Papa Lou” is ready let his son take the business into the future.

“Eric is taking the business to the next level,” he noted, adding that he’s been instrumental in building online revenue as well as the collectible watch and diamond markets.

For Lou and Carole, just back from six weeks of boating in the Bahamas, it looks like smooth sailing ahead.

Not bad for the boy who used to schlep the suitcases from the car to the store and back.

The South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA) is launching SoFIA Fellows, a new program that will harness the power of an older workforce to help nonprofit organizations achieve their missions while also providing older adults with an expanded social network, an increased sense of purpose, and updated workforce skills.

“For some older adults, retirement isn’t the answer while others may not be in a position to retire or even be able to find a job due to age discrimination,” said Peter Kaldes, President and CEO of the South Florida Institute on Aging.

Sponsored by a generous grant from The Frederick A. Deluca Foundation Inc., the innovative program offers a 10-week training session followed by placement in an unpaid internship with area non-profits. SOFIA Fellows will enjoy ongoing networking opportunities and inclusion in an

alumni job bank.

“We know that loneliness is as dangerous to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day,” said Elisabeth DeLuca, President of The Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation. “Being more isolated and going through your days without mental stimulation and a sense of purpose impacts well-being.

Many adults also find they need to remain in the workforce due to the fact that we are living longer and the rising cost of living will continue to rise.”

Instructors and community leaders will provide training on the fundamentals of nonprofits such as fundraising, board development and human resources as well as contemporary approaches to leadership, management and intergenerational workplaces.

During their internships, SoFIA Fellows will become part of a nonprofit's team advancing the

mission of organizations that help children, the environment, people with special needs, the homeless seniors and more.

“I know firsthand what it’s like trying to hide my age on my resume to get a job,” said Rhonda Banker, SoFIA Fellows Program Manager. “I'm excited to be leading a practical program where we don’t have to hide our ages, inspires us to thrive in the workplace and encourages generational diversity.”

The inaugural semester begins Oct. 8 and is limited to 15 participants. There is an application fee of $50 and a one-time enrollment fee of $250. Classes will be held at the SoFIA Tech Lab and Connection (TLC) Center at 2038 N. Dixie Hwy, Suite 102 in Wilton Manors. South Broward High School’s marching band is off to a fresh start.

The band’s new director, Victor Villaorduna, has his eyes set on leading the band to success.

“I want the kids to be happy and I want the band to sound good. I want to bring back a tradition of excellence in the band program,” he said. “The band gives students a sense of family. It is a fun environment for the kids.”

South Broward’s band traditionally preforms at home football games, community events, and assessments.

I love to perform. I want to pursue a career in music,” stated Emma Watana, the drum major and a flute player. Watana intends to study music in college.

Hector Pagan, the band captain and a trumpet player, stated, “We are a big family. I love performing at football games and I love playing music.”

Cooking directions: 1. Place ribs on large sheet of heavy-duty foil sprayed with cooking spray. Mix sugar and bourbon until blended; spread onto ribs. Wrap in foil. Refrigerate 1 hour.

3. Unwrap ribs; place, meat sides down, on grate over lit area of grill. Brush with 1/4 cup barbecue sauce. Grill 10 min., turning after 5 min. and brushing with remaining barbecue sauce.

NOW RECRUITING CLASS 44 OUR PROGRAM Each year, the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce coordinates Leadership Hollywood, an interactive program where participants can view our community up close, work together and acquire a unique knowledge of resources and services available in Hollywood, Broward County and the State of Florida. Leadership Hollywood is in fact, one of the state’s longest-running leadership programs. Fall 2019 will launch our 44th consecutive class!

WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT All activities include maximum class member involvement, participation and role playing. A class member will experience the process that guides him/her to better comprehend the challenges facing our community. Leadership Hollywood is an organized curriculum for our community.

Leadership Hollywood consists of nine unique program days, each providing an interactive forum through interface and communication with the current leaders and policy makers in our community. All activities include maximum class member involvement and participation. Class members experience the process that guides them to better comprehend the challenges facing our community.

In addition, the class will be divided in sub-groups and assigned a community service project to be completed before graduation. The North Central Hollywood Civic Association Welcomes New Leadership and a New Voice notes regarding sidewalk construction around the city, which Commissioner Hernandez said were partially being funded by money from FDOT. And then there was what the group called the “scary 3P Projects,” or the Public/ Private Partnerships being considered for the Armory and Dowdy Field, the possibility of a train station at the Lippman Center location, and the Orangebrook Golf course.

Change is afoot at the North Central Hollywood Civic Association.

Longtime president Cliff Germano, recently left Hollywood for greener pastures (North Florida).

In addition to his post at North Central, Germano served as president of the Hollywood Council of Civic Associations. He served on the city’s Planning and Development Board, the Community Development board, the Marine board, and many other organizations. He was an active voice in the community and contributed wholeheartedly to the city and its people. His contributions will be greatly missed.

North Central’s July meeting was also the debut of new association president, Patricia Antircan. No newbie to the association or leadership, Antircan is the acting treasurer, vice president, and interim president of the

Though Germano is a tough act to follow, Antrican had this to say: “I’m not going to try to follow him,” exclaimed Antrican, grinning. “I’m gonna do it my way. It’s, you know, girl power!”

And with that statement, she took her place at the podium and called the July meeting to order.

The North Central Hollywood Civic Association spans the area from Hollywood Boulevard to Sheridan Street and from I-95 to Dixie Highway/21st Avenue. The vast area means the association has not one, but two city Commissioners, Peter Hernandez and Traci Collari. While Hernandez was in attendance at the meeting, Collari was out of town. Special guests also included Commissioner Kevin Beiderman and President of the Park East Civic Association, Tom Lander.

“Everyone is welcome,” said Antrican.

“We are one city.”

So, what was on the agenda at the North Central Hollywood Civic Association meeting this month?

First up was Hollywood Police Department NTL for the area, Officer Joe Archer.

Burglaries are up a little, he noted, with eight this month, most of them due to unlocked vehicles. Some attendees stated that they think it’s better than having their windshield broken, but the officer suggested that perhaps not leaving valuables in the car would be even better.

Officer Archer then discussed a new scam in the area. He explained that thieves are wearing reflective construction vests, knocking on doors while pretending to be at work, and then breaking into homes when no one answers. He reported that the

HPD responded with additional patrol and surveillance vehicles and reminded people to be extra vigilant and call when they see anything suspicious. He also made himself available for questions and discussion during the meeting.

Next was Code Compliance Officer “and neighbor,” he emphasized, Irish Gardner.

Gardner explained that the bulk of violations given out were for overgrown grass and weeds, repairs being done without permits, and unmet “property standards” (when community members do not keep their homes well painted and well attended). “July is a great time to paint,” he noted, adding that he too, would be happy to take any questions.

Antrican then went through the written meeting agenda. Highlights included: Working with other groups in the Neighborhood Capital Improvement Program Technical Assistance Workshops to fill out government applications for grants that support Low to Middle Income areas. Grants can amount up to $13,000 per association, and she urged members to attend and apply.

A review of all projects currently entering the TAC and PACO, the Technical Advisory Committee, and Pre-application Conceptual Overview stages of city review.

While over these projects, the discussion, as in the other associations, centered around parking. Commissioner Hernandez noted that the reduction from 1.5 to 1 spot-perunit minimum was still up for debate.

“We are still fighting and the city is listening,” added Antrican. “We must stay in touch and work together. We are not antidevelopment. We want to have a vibrant, moving city, but we have to be careful.”

A long discussion on the new electric shuttle followed before a short chat on the neighborhood Butterfly Garden, a small patch on 26th Avenue between Arthur and Cleveland and a must-see when visiting the area, ensued.

President Antrican said she was hopeful that everyone could work together to make the city even better.

Guest Don Weimer gave a comprehensive presentation about the newly-revamped Downtown Hollywood Business Association and Commissioner Hernandez wrapped up the evening with his presentation that mostly focused on, you guessed it, parking.

Hernandez and many of the attendees discussed ideas to deal with the problem, and he urged the residents to be proactive.

“We have been working for a few years towards bringing solutions to these problems, but the city moves slowly,” he admitted.

He told the residents of the area that they needed to show up at commission meetings, be vocal, and be persistent.

“This is why we have these associations, why we have these meetings and why we invite the NTLs, the Code Officers, and the Commissioners,” said Antrican. “So we have the neighbors talking to the people that matter. As a collective voice, the Civic Associations are very strong now in the city of Hollywood, and the Commission and the staff realize how vital it is to work as partners.”

“We are all here because we all want to be here,” she added.

Under the previous presidency, this particular Civic Association was known to be vocal.

“We were a very vocal group,” Antrican admitted. “We used to be a little rowdy, but we’ve pulled back; we need the civility. Out there in the world these days it’s a little too rowdy, here we need to be friends and neighbors and all work together.”

Life After Dorian: Clean Up & Recovery Efforts As residents begin to clean up after the storm, the City of Hollywood has put together a list of FAQs regarding fallen trees, garbage and debris pickup, the City-wide boil water advisory, power restoration and other topics related to recovery efforts.

FLORIDA POWER & LIGHT (FPL) QUESTION: FPL Power Outages: I do not have power and want to know when the power will be back on? ANSWER: You can check out the FPL Power Tracker online and see when and where they are making the repairs. Visit fplmaps.com/FPL or FPL Power Tracker: FPL.com/powertracker QUESTION: There is a power line/ pole down in my yard/alleyway. Do I need to report it? ANSWER: FPL is aware of power outages affecting entire neighborhoods. However if your home is an isolated power outage, call 1.800.4.OUTAGE (1.800.468.8243).

REGULAR GARBAGE / RECYCLING COLLECTION QUESTION: When will the debris be picked up in our neighborhood? ANSWER: The City of Hollywood will work diligently to collect the debris as quickly and efficiently as possible. We are unable to offer a specific schedule for debris to be collected for neighborhoods.

QUESTION: How is the City determining where debris gets collected first? Will it be fairly distributed? ANSWER: The City has been sectored into 8 sections for deploying and tracking debris collection resources. This is to ensure debris removal crews are working in all areas of the City.

QUESTION: Why has my alley not been cleared? ANSWER: The debris contractors will be clearing alleys, utilizing specialized equipment. We ask for patience while we work through this difficult clean-up effort.

QUESTION: Trees are down in my gated or private community. Why has the City not been here to clear the trees? ANSWER: The City is working to gain authorization to remove debris in gated communities. Once this approval is obtained, debris from approved gated communities will be collected as debris management contractors collect

the debris throughout the City. If you are in a gated community and have questions about the status of this effort, please contact the City of Hollywood’s Emergency Management Coordinator Jaime Hernandez, jahernandez@hollywoodfl.org or 954.921.3053.

QUESTION: When is the City going to clear the alleys/roads? ANSWER: Trees blocking rights-of-way will be taken care of by the City’s debris management contractors.

Efforts are focused on first clearing primary corridors, then secondary roadways, followed by neighborhood streets and alleyways.

QUESTION: Trees in swale (area between the street and sidewalk) fell in resident’s yard (swale to private property).

How will the City assist? ANSWER: The removal of downed trees located in the swale that have fallen onto private property will be addressed after roadways are cleared which could take an extended period of time.

QUESTION: My neighbor’s tree fell in my yard and caused damages to my property.

How can the City assist? ANSWER: This is a civil matter between yourself and your neighbor. During this emergency we will allow ample time for residents to clean up before taking any Code Compliance action.

QUESTION: My tree fell into the alleyway, will I be cited by Code Compliance?

Do I need to remove the tree? ANSWER: You will not be cited by Code Compliance during the storm cleanup period, which will be an extended period of time. Debris contractors for the City will clear debris from public rights-of-way including alleys, but you will need to take care of any portions of the tree on your property.

QUESTION: I don’t have the resources to remove the tree that fell on my house and damaged my property, is there any assistance? ANSWER: Resources are available through the City’s Community Development Division to assist incomeeligible, low to moderate income (LMI) residents with removing fallen trees and debris only to the extent necessary to make their dwelling habitable. Meaning, that if a fallen tree blocks the entry or exit to your home or has damaged the structure and made it uninhabitable, then the tree can be removed to resolve the situation or to facilitate repair

of the affected area in conjunction with the Emergency Housing Repair Program.

The key is that assistance from Community Development is available only to LMI residents and the tree debris must affect the dwelling’s habitability. If the caller believes they meet the LMI criteria, they should contact the Community Development Division 954.921.3271.

QUESTION: Will Waste Pro be collecting Garbage/Recycle/Commingled on normal pickup days? ANSWER: This does not include Recycling and Commingled collections which are suspended at this time. All garbage customers are asked to bring their gray garbage carts to the front of their property until further notice for curbside collection, even if they have an alleyway. All garbage and all storm debris will be picked up at the curb. The City has debris management contractors to collect storm debris. All storm related debris should also be placed curbside at the front of your property. To speed recovery efforts, the City is asking residents to separate downed tree limbs, palm fronds and other brush from bulky items damaged in the storm. These materials will be picked up by the City’s debris contractors as they make their way across the City over the next several weeks. Garbage and all storm debris will be picked up at the curb.

QUESTION: The debris contractors collected my debris, but left the garbage bags I had placed out for collection behind. Will this be collected? ANSWER: The debris contractors will not collect debris that is placed into plastic bags due to regulations at the disposal site. A separate truck will be around to collect these items or they can be disposed of in your grey garbage cart.

QUESTION: Do I need to separate brush and tree debris from other storm debris like fencing and household items? ANSWER: Yes, the brush and other vegetative debris is hauled and disposed of separately from other types of debris. Piles that are a mix of brush and other type of non-vegetative storm debris will not be collected as quickly as piles that are separated.

QUESTION: Is there a pile size limit for bulk pick up? ANSWER: The regularly scheduled commingled collection service will be suspended. Following a storm, the City will retain debris management contractors to collect the storm debris. Storm debris

material should be replaced curbside for collection and not in the alley. There is no pile size limit for this storm debris collection.

We urge residents not to block the roadway and debris should be cut into 4 foot sections.

Tree branches and vegetative debris should be separated from other debris.

QUESTION: Will the City pick up debris placed for collection from businesses/commercial properties? ANSWER: Debris from businesses/commercial properties will not be collected by the City’s debris management contractors and should not be placed out for collection.

QUESTION: Will I get a refund on my garbage bill due to commingled/garbage/recycling services being suspended? ANSWER: While these services are being provided on a different timeline than regularly scheduled service due to the volume of the debris, the City will not be issuing refunds.

QUESTION: How can I get more information about debris issues, recycling/garbage cart placement? ANSWER: The City of Hollywood will send out notifications via the City’s e-mail notification service, NotifyMe, as well as several CodeRed emergency notifications via landline phone, cell phone, email and text message. Please sign up for the City’s notifyme e-mail notification service and Code Red, the City’s emergency notifications service. You can do so on the City’s website www. hollywoodfl.org /notifyme.

QUESTION: Will the City repair a broken sidewalk caused by a fallen tree?

ANSWER: The City of Hollywood annually funds a 50/50 shared cost sidewalk replacement program in partnership with our residents to assist residential property owners with necessary sidewalk repairs for the sidewalk abutting their property. Typical construction costs are approximately $150.00 for a 5’ by 5’ sidewalk section of which the homeowner share would be reduced by 50% to $75.00 per section. Upon request, the City will inspect the sidewalk and provide a firm construction cost estimate for your consideration. Please indicate your interest in the 50/50 sidewalk program and we will follow up to provide you a detailed cost estimate.

ANSWER: Individual Disaster Assistance: FEMA has declared Broward County eligible for individual assistance to help support your recovery. To find out what type of assistance is available, go to disasterassistance. gov.

Disaster Assistance For Low To Moderate Income Households: The City’s Community Development Division can provide grants for rental assistance, security deposits, utility deposits, to make interim repairs to stabilize homes, to mitigate water damage and to assist with paying insurance deductibles.

Community Development has implemented a Disaster Housing Repair Strategy funded by State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds in order to provide assistance to low- to moderate-income households impacted by Hurricane Dorian.

Eligibility is primarily income-based, and total household income cannot exceed $60,950.00 (based on a household size of four).

The City’s Community Development Division can provide grants for rental assistance, security deposit, and utility deposit to income-eligible households that have been temporarily displaced from their home due to Hurricane Dorian. Grants to incomeeligible homeowners whose home has been damaged by the hurricane are also available to make interim repairs to stabilize homes and make it habitable. This includes

mitigating water damage and drying-in damaged roof. Grants are also available to assist with paying insurance deductible for income-eligible households damaged by Dorian.

Assistance provided through the Community Development Division cannot be used to duplicate assistance provided by other federal/state agencies or private insurance companies.

Applications are available online. You may also call the Community Development Division at 954.921.3271 Monday through Thursday from 7A-6P for additional information. Please bring completed applications to the Community Development Office at City Hall, 2600 Hollywood Boulevard, 2nd floor Room 203.

QUESTION: Will FEMA be in Hollywood? ANSWER: FEMA Disaster Survivor Assistance Teams (DSAT) will begin visiting Broward County households who have preregistered online. DSATs provide support to disaster survivors at their homes or in their communities, offering options for how to access programs that can help them move forward in their recovery. DSATS work by grid and are visiting the areas with most storm impact first. DSAT members will be wearing dark blue FEMA vests and must produce a Federal ID. We have not been informed by the county that DSATs have begun working in Hollywood. The county has advised that they will let us know when they begin working in our area. If someone knocks on your door and says they are with FEMA and they do not provide proper identification, please call the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866.720.5721.
