Every Friday, Miami Free Art Fridays is a worldwide art movement that’s made its way to Miami, and the city’s local chapter, founded by local artist and promoter Registered Artist, is striving to unite artists, art collectors, and anyone who loves a good scavenger hunt. Every Friday, artists hide their work around the city, and whoever finds it gets to take it home for free. To participate, the rules are simple: Make a work of art you’re willing to give away. Then leave it somewhere in the city, along with your name (artistic nickname or otherwise) and the local chapter’s information (the site has a printable QR code, or artists can include the Facebook page URL). Next, post clues on the Facebook page to help Free Art Fridays (FAF) members find your work. Members also post pictures of their finds on the page and “share” them so artists can see who took their creations home. Painters, photographers, poets — all types of artists are encouraged to participate and drop pieces off around the city. COST: FREE INFO: FACEBOOK GROUP: MIAMI FREE ART FRIDAYS

JANUARY 2014

Street art is ‘closer to fine’ at Wyn 317 Interview with Danelle Pino | Wyn 317 When did Wyn 317 open and how did you start the gallery?   Wyn 317 had its grand opening last July and has since received a heartwarming and enthusiastic support from the art community. From the very beginning, local artists such as Atomik, deepened my desire to showcase the terrific artwork by South Florida artists. I was thrilled when he agreed to participate in the first show. I envisioned Wyn 317 as a hub where up- and-coming, mid-career and established artists would gather, sharing their work with each other and the surrounding communities. Part of my mission is to encourage art representing South Florida’s unique styles and settings. Each artist creates exclusive artwork for the gallery, allowing for art enthusiasts to discover unique and distinctive works of art. It’s humbling to be a part of a one-of-akind artistic movement. This movement expresses art that is sensitive, full of energy and invokes sentiment. It’s not only attractive, it is also art colored by South Florida’s unique social, cultural and historical influences. Most of the artists you represent have prominent murals in Wynwood. How did your gallery evolve to feature mostly street artists?   I have always had a passion for street art culture. My goal is to immerse myself in it and to see these artists evolve. Many of the muralists are eager to expand their reach and explore different venues of expression. That’s why featured artists create artwork exclusively with Wyn 317 in mind. This allows me to get into the scene, while providing the artists with exposure to a wider audience. People become fans when they recognize the immense talent and energy that emanates from their work. Recognition of these artists and their art is spreading throughout South Florida and to other parts of the world. Recently, an art collector visiting from Denmark bought a wonderful art piece by Ivan Roque. Wyn 317 and I are also evolving on this exciting art journey. Like the artists and their art, the gallery and I are dynamic. None of us are the same as we were five years ago. It's thrilling to be a part of this growth and to witness local artists succeeding and being recognized for their talent. What do you love about street art, how do you think it has changed the landscape of traditional art galleries and spaces?

There are several things that draw me to street art. Most significant to me is the break from the established "norm,” the unexpected. Murals and art pieces often question or comment on society. It's intriguing to interpret their bold messages. Context, another significant factor in street art, would dictate that traditional art galleries conforming to the art norm cannot adequately present this street artwork. Not long ago, traditional galleries existed only in upscale neighborhoods or in the business districts. A street artist would not have been asked to exhibit his or her art, nor would that work be produced on canvases and other surfaces. These artists, are now becoming considered Fine Artists, with some works of art selling for millions of dollars. With the increasing popularity of street art, a number of traditional galleries will have to redefine themselves to capture and exhibit the creativity of the street artist to meet the needs of serious art collectors. We heard that Britto bought a piece of art from your gallery? Can you tell us the story? I will never forget that day. I have always admired Romero Britto’s art and to see him walk inside Wyn 317 as I prepped for the grand opening was amazing. He dropped by to welcome Wyn 317 into the neighborhood and to wish me well. Britto was so sweet and encouraging. It was such a wonderful experience. It felt great to have a world renowned artist acknowledge the gallery and the artwork on exhibit. Britto especially loved a couple of art pieces by Registered Artist and decided to buy them for his own collection. After that, I knew Wyn 317 was going to do well. What are your upcoming shows? Following GG’s solo exhibit’s highly acclaimed success last September, Wyn 317 will once again feature his in February. GG’s first show graced the outside wall of the gallery with the exceptional “El Barrio” mural which is still there today. Although the upcoming exhibit will feature smaller works of art created especially for the gallery, GG will also have other notable artistic renditions. I’m also very excited about the gallery’s plans for March. Wyn 317 will be launching an all female exhibition for International Women’s

Month. The first two weeks will showcase local women street artists including Diana Contreras and Kazilla. The uniting theme will be the essence of female empowerment as interpreted artistically. Plans for April through the summer are still in the works. More information will be updated via our Social Networks. Tell us about your involvement with the free art Friday movement. I am such a believer in the free art Friday movement. It allows anyone to join the journey into the art world. Friday’s free art scavenger hunt is a fun way for fans of artistic expression to get involved in a journey with an artist. The bonus is that anyone can get art pieces for free. It gives an everyday person who is not an art collector the chance to start their own collection. The artist in turn creates an original piece of art to share with whoever finds it first. Thus, they are giving to the community while spreading their artwork among more people. Registered Artist who started the chapter here in South Florida is a personal friend. He had a solo exhibition in October at the gallery. I believe his dedication to the free art Friday movement added to the show’s success. Wyn 317 encourages featured artists to participate in the free art Friday movement, as the gallery has been honored to be pick-up and drop off point numerous times.

A recent New York Times article says

Is there anything else you would like us to know? I have an awesome landlord. David Lombardi was one of the first people to recognize how special this art community is, and has been supportive ever since. Were it not for his commitment and dedication to promoting urban art, there may not be a Wyn 317 today. His belief in urban artists and me provided the opportunity to make Wyn 317 happen. I’m constantly on the hunt for inspiration when curating Wyn 317, and am always willing to feature new local artists. I encourage and invite new talent to contact me and visit the gallery. Please feel free to check out our website or send an email. Artists may want to send their artwork samples in order to see if there is something we can do together. Wyn 317 is located at 167 NW 25 St.in the heart of Wynwood. For more information, call (305) 761-1116. Wynwood Canvas | 305-901-2516 | www.wynwoodcanvas.com
