FROM THE FRONT DESK

With World Dairy Expo just around the corner, it is an exciting time to look towards where the future lies on the global stage for Australian Jersey Genetic and Jersey Australia. World Dairy Expo provide a significant opportunity for domestic focussed AI companies to build on the growing interest and demand for Australian Jersey Genetics in Nth America and will be the starting point of what we hope to be a significant starting point for a global export market support program.

We have a strong focus on supporting global market opportunities as we see this a way to grow member and service provider opportunities through global jersey genetic sales whether that be semen, embryos, or live export. Growing these opportunities builds greater resilience into our domestic markets and provides additional revenue opportunities to members.

We are supporting these opportunities because you the breeder have developed the Australian Jersey to be the cow the world demands, and we congratulate you for that. Well Done.

Now let us continue to make the Australian Jersey better!

Dairy Beef Partnership

In the last Jersey Journal, we outlined some burgeoning opportunity in the dairy beef space for JA Members and we are excited to let you know that this opportunity has taken a significant step forward. Through our commercial trading arm Jersey Marketing Services, we have an opportunity opening to supply Jersey/Beef Infocus calves to a meat company building up to 300 calves per week. Trial programs are underway.

The partnership will be for members to supply the calves at 7-10 days of age, however in the implementation phase this opportunity could also be for weaned calves at the 110-120kg weight and grass-fed backgrounded calves at around 200-250kg. 60-70% of calves born each year are surplus to your dairy farm needs year on year so having a dedicated value-added opportunity to sell your surplus calves through JMS and your Jersey Australia membership is a significant member benefit opportunity that will add value to your business.

With spring joining decision being finalised now, it’s time to start thinking forward to how you manage your surplus calves in 2023 and beyond. To find out more, contact me on 0418 466 371 or register your interest by emailing DairyBeef@ jersey.com.au and contact your local ABS Australia representative to order your Beef InFocus semen for spring joining.

STUD PROFILE

BORONIA RIDGE JERSEYS

Rodney & Stephanie Goode

Boronia Ridge Jerseys was established in 2017 by Rodney and Stephanie Goode. With the purchase of 30 2yr old heifers from long time Jersey stud breeders Colin and Jenny Dowel (Inverell Jerseys).

An additional 22 heifers were purchased the following year also from Colin and Jenny. We were lucky to acquire some surplus jersey calves yearly from Steph’s parents Neville & Sandy Carfrae’s commercial Jersey/Friesian herd. Theses calves helped to increase the Jersey numbers with in the predominantly Holstein herd.

The Jerseys calves were all registered through the Genetic Recovery System as Dads herd records were kept from as far back as 1954 when the commercial herd was purchased and farmed by Steph’s Grandparents Lindsay and Evelyn Carfrae.

FARM SIZE – 265ha @ Poowong North South Gippsland

• Our Milking herd consists of 350 Registered Cows, 35% Jerseys and the remaining are Holsteins. Calving pattern is a split 50/50 Spring/Autumn system.

MOST INFLUENTIAL COW FAMILIES IN THE HERD:

• BUTTERWINKS, STELLA’S, CONSENT’S all originating from Inverell Jerseys.

• Our herd is an open herd allowing us to add new cow families like the Daisy’s and Estelle’s from the Cairnbrae Jerseys Dispersal sales.

We are big believers in using tools like Flushing, sexed semen and genomic testing to optimise our genetic gain. All heifers and milking cows are now joined to either sexed semen or Beef straws depending on their type and production, then beef mop up bulls are used for remainder of the joining season. We genomic test all our calves which gives us plenty of information so we can make informed decisions on who to send to export and which AI bulls to join to which heifers at joining time. We believe Flushing is very important to help advance our more Influential cow families within our herd.

Choosing our AI sires team:

• When choosing sires we look at Type, Mammary and production.

• This years sire selections include; ASKN, Matt, Chocochip, Bashful, Broadway and Torus.

• Heifers to calve are sired by: Casino, Jetfighter, Pilgrim, Pixstar-P and Bontino.

• Calves – yearlings sired by: Chrome, Jetfighter, Askn, Matt, and Bontino.

Classification

• We regularly classify our heifers and resubmit any cows we believe will likely go up from VG to EX, this is a very important tool as it gives us important information on how the herd is traveling re Type.

• We believe it is very important to register, Classify and Genomic Test all our cattle as then there is proof of important information on generations past and present which helps value add to the herd.

We are looking forward to a good spring season where we hope to get plenty of pit grass silage followed by the planting of our annual maize crop. The milking herd is fed a PMR on the concrete feed pad of Grass silage, Maize silage and Oaten or Vetch hay throughout the summer, autumn and winter months.

JUGIONG CELEBRATES 90 YEARS

THE Nicholson family has been digging into the archives as they prepare to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Jugiong Stud.

And they’ve uncovered some surprises!

Pat and Brendon had always assumed the stud was started by their great-grandfather Phillip but it was actually his wife Veronica who instigated it.

“She had always had an interest in cattle and horses and wanted to get a Jersey stud going,” Pat said.

“It was Veronica who pushed to buy the first couple of cows. It seems like it was her passion for the Jersey side of things rather than Phillip’s.”

“It was Veronica who pushed to buy the first couple of cows. It seems like it was her passion for the Jersey side of things rather than Phillip’s.”

Bill & Evelyn, Pat & Brendan and Phillip & Amy Nicholson Arthur Nicholson Veronica Nicholson
The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2022 // 10 FEATURE
WORDS & PICTURES // MEDIAMASTERS

The stud’s name came from the NSW town Jugiong where Veronica was born and raised.

They were living in Ararat at the time and initially they bought just a handful of cows.

For the first 20 years, the Jersey stud was just a sideline as they developed a sheep and cropping farm at Tatyoon.

Their son Arthur and his wife Iris continued the stud, farming at Moyston near The Grampians, and their two sons, Bill and Phillip and their wives Evelyn and Amy kept the farming tradition going.

Pat and his brother Brendon, the sons of Bill and Evelyn, together with their wives Carmen and Tenealle are the fourth generation to run the stud.

The biggest change in the 90-year history came in 1973 with the relocation from Moyston to Girgarre, west of Shepparton.

At that time, they had a small herd of cows on a mostly sheep and cropping farm at Moyston.

“Arthur said to Bill and Phillip that if they wanted to be serious dairy farmers, they needed to get into a dairying area,” Pat said.

They sold their milk contract at Moyston which gave them a deposit on the farm at Girgarre. From there, they became full-time dairy farmers, growing from 80 cows to a peak of 550 around 2016-17.

Pat and Brendon are now milking about 450 cows.

“In 2019 we sold the milking herd but we kept all the heifers and gradually re-built the herd.

“Northern Victoria had experienced many years of drought and high water prices and low milk prices; it was very difficult to continue to operate,” Pat said.

This year they will be back milking 450 in spring and plan to continue milking 400-450.

FAMILY SUCCESSES

Jugiong Stud has had many notable cow families over the years, dominated by Daydream and Leonie.

4th Jugiong Leonie 43 - Melbourne Show

The first Leonie cow was bought two years after the stud was established and has been part of the herd for 88 years.

The foundation cow for the Daydreams was purchased in 1943.

The Daydream cow family is synonymous with the stud and has a lot of success over the years, with wins at International Dairy Week and Supreme cow titles at Sydney and Melbourne.

One particular line of the Daydreams has produced a dozen very highprofile cows.

One thing that hasn’t changed over the 90 years is the focus on production.

“We like good type cows, but we want productive cows that are going to pay the bills,” Pat said.

“We like to show cows but we’ve never bred that way. We’ve bred high production cows and if you got a

6th Jugiong Daydream 193 - Melbourne Show
The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2022 // 11

show cow along the way, that was a bonus.”

Pat is confident today’s cow is far superior to her predecessors.

“Genetics, management and feeding have all improved,” he said.

Jugiong has been a platinum production herd with Jersey Australia over recent years.

For the season just finishing, the herd averaged 6800 litres, 320 kg/Ms fat and 250 kg/Ms protein.

“We’ve been over 6500 litres for a number of years but that’s probably the highest we’ve been.

“We’re using the best genetics and feeding cows better and we have a big emphasis on growing out our young stock well and having our two-year-olds well grown when they calve.”

One thing that hasn’t changed over 90 years is the focus on Jersey cows.

“We looked at Holsteins in the early 1990s because Jerseys at that stage weren’t giving enough milk,” Pat said.

“We had contemplated going to Holsteins and getting out of Jerseys, but once we got onto the North American genetics which had high

milk flow and productive cows it really turned the breeding around.

“We bought half a dozen Holsteins at that stage but never went any further.”

He remains convinced that Jerseys are the best cows. “For total solids produced for the size of the cow and for what they eat, you can’t beat a Jersey for their economy and efficiency,” Past said.

“There’s also the management side of it, they’re easier to handle. If the Jersey cow is on the ground, you can roll her over, but you can’t with the Holstein.

“They’re better on pastures because they don’t pug it as much when it gets wet and in a wet winter, you don’t get as many foot issues with Jerseys as with Holsteins because they’re not carrying the same weight.”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Although only 10 years from a century, Pat says it’s the right time to celebrate.

Pat, 49, and Brendon, 48, both have younger children showing interest but it’s not certain yet if they want to continue farming.

“Hopefully we will be here for the century but you never know what’s around the corner,” Pat said.

They will hold a celebration day on Saturday November 19 with an open herd inspection, afternoon tea and dinner and band plus an auction for the pick of the herd.

“We thought it would be good to celebrate and sell just one cow and let the buyer have the pick of the herd,” Pat said.

The history book will also be launched at the event. Pat and Brendon have been searching old family records, Livestock Bulletins and Jersey Journals and talking to his uncle Phillip to get personal insights.

“It’s bigger than we first anticipated,” he said. “It will be good to have the history of the stud, the family and some cow families and some of the achievements over the years in print and be able to hand it on to the next generation.”

YOUNG AUSTRALIAN GENOMIC BULLS DOMINATE IN THE LATEST ABVS

Young Australian genomic bulls have dominated in the August ABVs as global demand grows for Aussie Jerseys.

Jersey Australia general manager Glen Barrett said 15 of the top 20 young genomic bulls in the DataGene August update are Australian.

“That’s a strong indicator of the strength of Australian Bulls and supports feedback that importing AI companies are struggling to find bulls that are rating well in Australia,” Mr Barrett said.

“With growing global demand for Aussie bulls, we are seeing more companies looking at domestic Jersey bulls.”

The top five young genomic bulls are PICKLE with a BPI of 408, followed

by ROULETTE (396), CSCJAMIEO (380), BUTLER (375) and CSCWOODSIDE (372), all Australian bulls.

The top Australian Proven Bulls are also dominated by domestic bulls; DOUGGAN (BPI 395), DOBSON (358), INVINCIBLE (338) and ASKN (294), followed by import MATT (287).

The Australian dominance is timely with Jersey Australia leading a joint trade site at World Dairy Expo in Madison Wisconsin USA in October.

The site will include also Holstein Australia, Genetics Australia, AgriGene, Central Sires Co-op with support from National Herd Improvement Association of Australia (NHIA).

“The great positive is that Australian bulls are providing some of the

world’s leading genetics at the moment, so there has never been a better time to market our Jerseys to the world,” Mr Barrett said.

The top Jersey herd in the August ABVs was Con and Michelle Glennen’s White Star Jerseys from Noorat in south-west Victoria, with a BPI of 225, up 18 on the April score.

The top five was rounded out by Bryan and Jo Dickson’s Emu Banks Jerseys, the Bacon family’s Brookbora Jerseys, Rohan and Graham Sprunt’s Kaarmona Jerseys and Michaela Thompson’s Heartland Jerseys.

Mr Barrett welcomed the new Sustainability Index which he said would help to drive on-farm sustainability through genetics.

THE BENEFITS OF REGISTERED COWS

“EVERYBODY likes a registered cow with history” says Carrie Ralston (pictured right), and a giant undertaking at the Gippsland farm she shares with partner Warren is proving that to be true.

Carrie and Warren have undertaken a major genetic recovery project and introduced genomic testing over the past two years and they’re pleased with the results.

They milk about 250 cows, mostly registered Jerseys but also including about 10 per cent registered Ayrshires at their leased farm near Yarram.

Both breeds came from registered herds but not all boxes had been ticked, so the genetic recovery and subsequent genomic testing have been invaluable.

It was Carrie who pushed for the recovery project.

“It was going to be a massive cost and a lot of work but I was pushing for it and we bit the bullet,” she said.

“We still come across the off cow that hasn’t been registered, but because we have all the breeding and the records, we can track it down and sort it out.

“It was a lot of work but it’s definitely worth it. When you go to register the calves, you look back on the history and the breeding and we have some really strong female families in the herd that you want to keep breeding from.”

Carrie also influenced the addition of Ayrshires, though she also appreciates the role of Jerseys.

“When I was in New Zealand, I worked with Ayrshire breeders and they got me into it,” she said.

“I bought some foundation cows from registered studs and carried on with that, using bulls from Canada and USA to try to breed better.”

But she also sees advantages in the Jerseys, saying they don’t make as much mess in winter with their smaller feet.

Carrie and Warren work with Brad Aitken from Leading Edge Genetics to select bulls and to identify where they can improve the cows.

The Australian Jersey Journal – September-October 2022 // 20 PROFILE WORDS & PICTURES // MEDIAMASTERS

“We also select bulls we think we will be okay and then match them up to ensure there will be no in-breeding and try to level out any faults in the cows,” Carrie said.

Sires that have done well on the farm in the past 20 years include Valentino and Vanahlem.

“We’re always striving to create the perfect cow,” Carrie said. “I reckon we’re on the uphill trend.”

Some of the cows just go by registered numbers rather than names but one cow that has done really well is a four-year-old Macho from the Vine family.

“She seems to have some really nice daughters, cows we want to keep breeding to keep the family going,” Carrie said.

She won the Jersey Australia Gippsland on-farm challenge last year for her age group.

Carrie says the decision to introduce genomic testing is also paying off.

“Genomic testing is good because it proves our records are correct,” she said.

“Everybody likes a registered cow with history.”

“We’re trying breed stronger, more vigorous calves that end up being better animals in the long run.”

Warren, born and bred in Yarram, has leased the farm for the past 20 years and says the long-term agreement has worked well for both parties.

He remains committed to Jerseys.

“The Ayrshires are a lot bigger cow but they all seem to get along,” he said.

The herd is performing well. The average production is about 6000 litres per year and they’re doing about 550 milk solids.

Warren started his herd with cows from registered herds at Shepparton and Cobden “but the registrations were a little bit vague and I never kept up with them”.

“Carrie put a rocket under me to get the genetic recovery job done,” he said. “We spend a lot of money on breeding and it will be more profitable in the long run if we have a registered herd of cows.

“If we want to sell cows, they will be more desirable.”

Warren only enters the Jersey Australia on-farm challenges and Brad Aitken’s on-farm challenge at Warragul where they’ve won regular awards and took out the most successful exhibitor across all breeds three years ago.

“Brad does our mating program,” Warren said.

“We’ve been doing corrective mating for the past 12-15 years. We like to have a nice cow with type and

longevity. It doesn’t always work but we’ve been slowly achieving our goals. The mating program definitely helps and has certainly improved the herd from when we started.”

Last year they won three classes, two-and-four-year-olds and best mature cow, and were the most successful exhibitor in the Jersey Australia on-farm challenge.

“That was good because we’ll probably never show at Dairy Week,” Warren said, “though if we have a cow good enough one year, we might send her up with someone else.”

Jet-setting Jersey genetics

Global demand for Australian Jersey genetics has taken off, as dairy farmers from across the world want to secure semen from sires with positive daughter fertility.

This export boom also comes off the back of a rise in the number of homozygous, or double-P, true polled, locally bred sires coming through the ABS genomic ranks.

In the next 12 months, ABS has orders for up to 40,000 units of Australian Jersey semen for delivery to South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States of America.

ABS Australian Business Operations Manager Bruce Ronalds this global interest was a credit to the Australian industry.

“It shows that the progeny from Australia’s Jersey breeding program is well sought after,” he said.

“Positive daughter fertility has driven a lot of global breeder interest. Not that the Jersey breed has a fertility issue, it’s quite the opposite, and farmers want to make sure they keep it that way by choosing the Australian sires that rank well for this vital trait.”

But it’s not just one trait driving demand, according to Bruce.

“If you tick the box for daughter fertility and that same sire also helps improve milk components and adds chest and body to cows – that’s the sort of genetics a country like South Africa will jump on,” he said.

“When we identify a bull like that, we easily get an order for up to 6,000 to 7,000 units of that sire in one hit.”

The seasonality of Australian dairy farming means an increase in export demand won’t affect domestic stocks of Jersey semen, Bruce explained.

Genetics earmarked for the global market is collected outside of peak domestic periods.

Gelbeado Park WOODSIDE (CSCWOODSIDE) and Brookbora BUSHFIELD P (CSCBUSHFIELD) are two high-ranking Australian genomic sires in demand overseas.

At number five and 372 on the Australian Breeding Values (ABV) genomic Balanced Performance Index (BPI) index, CSCWOODSIDE has been ABS’ biggest selling Jersey.

Positive for components and milk, this sire adds width and strength to the chest and body of its progeny – something the Jersey industry wants.

CSCWOODSIDE is 111 for Type and 110 for Udders.

Northern-Victorian bred, polled sire CSCBUSHFIELD is also gaining global fans.

“In addition to his polled and A2 genes, he’s 103 for Daughter Fertility,” Bruce said.

“But it’s CSCBUSHFIELD’S dam, Brookbora Valentino Sweet Elfa EX-92, that’s impressed Canadian, US, South African and New Zealand breeders, because she’s been very successful at shows here in Australia.”

Back in Australia, dairy farmers are making the most of ABS’ next generation of genomic sires – including a breed-leading number of “double P” young bulls.

ABS now has four ‘double p’ Jerseys now, including three available in its sexed genetic product Sexcel®.

The true polled Sexcel sires include Pine-Tree VACUUM PP, TOG WYNDMERE PP and Ahlem BAKER PP.

Pine-Tree FARO PP, Australia’s second highest ranking ‘double P” sire, is available as conventional semen now, but as he gets older, he will move into the Sexcel program.

“Everyone is after polled, double P, so they can get 100 per cent polled progeny,” Bruce said.

“Commercial dairy farmers are chasing the animal welfare gains from polled, while stud breeders have the added incentive of striving to get a true polled bull into AI to improve the next generation.”

The future is looking bright for Australia’s Jersey industry, according to Bruce.

Australia’s first Murray Brook JAMIEO (CSCJAMIEO) calves are hitting this ground this spring, with breeders looking forward to the development of offspring from the number three Australian Breeding Value genomic (ABVg) Jersey.

Scored 108 for Type, 112 for Udders and backed by high semen fertility, Bruce said this sire, bred by the Lenehan family in Western Victoria is exciting.

ABS also has the highest ranked polled Jersey with Balnageith JANGO P (CSCJANGO).

A new release and bred in Gippsland by Alister Grant, CSCJANGO is one of the top Jersey bulls on the Sustainability Index (SI) at 834.

CSCJANGO also has high Survivability at 114, high protein, carries the polled gene and is A2.

Another exciting young Jersey bull Warrain TRASK (CSCTRASK) is number nine on the ABVg rankings at 354 BPI, 108 Type, 113 Udders and 104 for Mastitis Resistance.

TRASK is also one of the highest Jerseys on the SI at 828. “We are thrilled about the number of high-ranking genomic bulls in the Australian system, and we are looking forward to graduating them over the next few years to have extremely reliable bulls for our local industry,” Bruce said.

Jerseys going from strength to strength

Agri-gene’s line-up of Australian Jersey sires continues to go from strength to strength following the release of the 2022 August breeding values.

Casino son ROULETTE leads the way at +396 BPI, he is bred in the purple out of an EX94 IDW Grand Champion cow and will add Stature and Strength to his daughters with great udders.

He is also one of the top Production sires with over 500 litres Milk and over 60 CFP with positive components. ROULETTE has the ability to put Australian Jersey’s on the map with semen exported to both USA and UK where he also has received impressive genomic proofs and ranks amongst the highest Type sires in Australia, USA and UK.

Two new sires to Agri-Gene’s line-up for 2022 have been extremely popular, BROADWAY-P and IMPECCABLE.

BROADWAY-P is an A2 polled sire backed by generations of EX cows from the Broadlin Ilagay cow family.

BROADWAY’s semen has been selling as quickly as he can make it with demand outstripping supply, be sure to get your orders in for spring for this Type and Production allrounder.

IMPECCABLE is a Matt son from the Impish cow family at Kaarmona and is a sire you can use to add style and Strength without sacrificing production and Health traits.

A2A2, polled sire PIXSTAR has been the surprise package from the Agri-Gene Jersey line-up, originally brought into the line-up on the Strength of his USA genomic proof and cow family.

PIXSTAR is now adding Australian milking daughters, he is sire of Australias highest ranked BPI sure and continues to climb up the BPI rankings himself where he is one of the highest daughter fertility sire’s at +105.

An awesome team of Jersey bulls

The 2022 August ABVs have delivered some great results for Genetics Australia. We welcome the release with the new Sustainability Index [SI] release.

The continual improvement in the Australian Breeding Values is a real credit to the DataGene team and the quality of the Jersey bulls available in Australia today has never been better.

Our team is clearly the strongest line-up of Jersey sires, both genomic and daughter-proven, ever catalogued at Genetics Australia. It is not only in Australia where Australian Jerseys are making their mark. Growing international demand continues to grow year-on-year and a recent first shipment of semen to Pakistan will soon be followed by several elite Jersey heifers. Their performance will be closely watched in Pakistan and also neighbouring India where Jersey semen will be sent later in the year. With a combined population of more than 1.7 billion people the potential for demand in Australian Jerseys could be significant.

BROADWAY 3425 EX90.

August ABVs consolidated the strong performance of GA Jerseys in the April release. The 2022 Genetics Australia Jersey team is led by daughter-proven bulls from number 1 BPI Jersey herd White Star Jerseys DOUGGAN 395 BPI and DOBSON 358 BPI. DOBSON also leads the first Sustainability Index [SI] with an SI of 882 while DOBSON ranks third on 757 SI. At 33kgs Protein and +363 milk DOUGGAN is also a production and health traits specialist making him one of the most profitable bulls ever made

available in Australia. He can also be used to advantage in cross breeding programs as his lower stature and improvements to feet and legs, rumps and body traits make him ideal for use over Holsteins.

DOUGGAN and DOBSON are joined by INVINCIBLE 338 BPI and ASKN 294 BPI as the four leading Australian BPI Jersey daughterproven bulls standing in Australia. INVINCIBLE at 110 for Overall Type also tops the Good Bulls Guide [GBG] for Type list while ASKN now has more than 230 milking daughters and at 115 for Longevity ABV is the highest Jersey bull available. He has been in high demand internationally for the past year.

Wallacedale PICKLE retains his top standing as the highest genomic Jersey at 408 BPIg while GOLDBANDP at 344 BPIg and 110 for mammary is one of the highest demand genomic Jerseys in Australia today. -Both bulls have recently recommenced semen production after being upgraded to EU quarantine status

so they also meet future export orders.

Other popular genomic Jersey bulls BESTYET 330BPIg, IZUKU 306BPIg, BEDFORD 269BPIg and PICKETT 320BPIg all offer an exciting blend of production and type, and are all from leading Australian cow families.

We remain committed at Genetics Australia to continue to invest in genetics best suited to Australian farming systems for the betterment of our all our members and dairy producers. We look forward assisting you in bull selection. Our goal remains to provide improved returns and ongoing development to your business via genetic improvement.

Our Jersey sire catalogue is available to view on our website and will be landing on farm soon.

ST JERSEY AUSTRALIA MAJOR

JERSEY

Australia is excited to announce ST GENETICS AUSTRALIA (STG Australia) as our new sponsor and major sponsorship partner for our signature On-Farm Challenge competitios – The Great Southern Challenge, the Great Northern Challenge and The Great Australian Challenge.

Our new partnership with STG Australia is a long-term sponsorship commitment which enables the Association to continue the On Farm Challenge as members know and love and foster the On Farm Challenges continued growth and development.

General Manager of Jersey Australia Glen Barrett welcomed the partnership saying, “ST Genetics have a strong commitment of supporting events, shows and youth development.

“It is an exciting opportunity for Jersey Australia to bring together Australia’s leading on farm challenge competition and a global leader in genetics and breed promotion in ST Genetics.”

“STG Australia are excited with the opportunity to support the Jersey Australia On Farm Challenges” said Peter Semmens, General Manager of STG Australia.

“Such opportunities to sponsor such a respected and well-known feature of the Jersey Australia calendar rarely become available and when approached by Jersey Australia it was a pretty easy decision to take the role of sponsorship.

STG Australia commenced business in Australia in its current format approximately four years ago and in that time has incorporated the Gender Sorting laboratory together at Camperdown into its business.

They have commenced a strong commitment to the Australian dairy genetics industry by currently importing more than 250 male and some female embryo’s a year, combined of Jersey and Holstein.

The ratio of Jersey embryo’s is increasing as ST USA expands its own program, Peter commented, and the first resultant calves in

Australia have now been born and those once Genomic tested on BPI and TPI and other countries indexes will enter for collection and marketing of genetics.

Supporting this STG Australia is also expecting more Australian bred bulls to enter the collection facility. We see our linkage through Jersey Australia and events such as the STG Virtual Youth Show and incorporating the GSC as a fantastic steppingstone not only for STG Australia but also Jersey Australia.

STG Australia will be very keen to sit down with Jersey Australia once this year’s event is over to review and where, and if needed enhance the competition in line with STG Australia and Jersey Australia commitment to the Australian industry.

The change in major sponsor from Semex Australia was a mutually agreed but albeit difficult decision for both Semex and Jersey Australia to end the long-term partnership.

Jersey Australia acknowledges the important and valued contribution that Semex Australia provided to the On Farm Challenges and we thank all at Semex Australia for their contribution over many years.

The Great Southern Challenge began in 1999 and then grew to incorporate The Great Northern Challenge in 2008 and The Great Australian Challenge in 2013.

Clubs are reminded that club challenges are required to be completed by the end of October with all results submitted by this date to the office.

Judging for the Great Northern Challenge will commence on or around November 5th with the Great Southern Challenge judging commencing on or around November 10th.

ABVCORNER

Across the globe, 1st lactation heifer is the only data that supports breeding values and in 2021 JA Classifiers scored sone 3836 heifers across member, Ginfo and LTE class and provide data on 24 linear traits and 2 DataGene composites for Overall Type and Mammary and the Final Score to DataGene for each animal. That’s 103,752 data points!

When a proof is 1st released, the Bulls are usually too young to have any phenotypic data, so the ABV is generated from blending the genomic expected performance derived from the Bulls genotype and parentage contribution form the sire and dam pathways. As raw phenotypic data becomes available, this is when the bull capabilities are assessed with his daughter’s recorded data and

added to the evaluation. At this point the proofs can either go up, go down or stay relatively the same. As more and more data are included, the proofs can become “proven” which means there is sufficient data sourced from enough cows and in enough herds to give the user confidence the ABV is doing what we expected from it. As more data is added the proof reliability increases. ABV’s with a reliability of 99% should mean you can strongly rely on the bulls’ daughters to perform to the proof

In this edition of the ABV corner we will start with 2 Composite breeding values being Overall Type and Mammary.

Overall Type Mammary

✓ The Overall Type Composite Breeding value refers to the bull’s ability to sire daughters that will classify higher or lower than others when the Jersey Australia’s classifier visits. To improve Overall Type in your herd, select bulls with an ABV for Overall Type greater than 100.

✓ The Mammary Composite ABV takes into consideration all mammary traits to calculate the ABV. To improve the overall mammary of daughters in your herd, users should select bulls with a MAMMARY ABV of 100 or greater.

✓ When using any composite traits and indexes it’s important to forget about key objectives in your breeding strategy. If Breeders consider they need greater selection emphasis on key mammary traits i.e., LIGAMENT, set multiple filters in your bull selection criteria so that your selecting bulls with an overall good MAMMARY but with the additional selection pressure on LIGAMENT to ensure that you are not compromising on this trait.

Type ABV’s are some of the most used and valued breeding values and they all start with you the farmer in classifying 1st lactation heifers. Type ABVs

PRESERVING PREMIUM DATA THROUGH CORRECT RECORD TRANSFERS

son Leo, and Eddie’s brother Andrew, milking 400 cows on 400 hectares at Orford, 20kms north of Port Fairy in Victoria’s southwest.

A recent decision to downsize the dairy will see the McGraths reduce their numbers from 400 to 250 cows, while expanding their small mob of ewes and beef cows to diversify their business.

With a growing interest in registered cattle, Rachel and Leo have taken over the dairy breeding program. Since establishing Wootanga Park Jerseys, the siblings have made regular investments in elite Jerseys with a focus on deep cow families with high-ranking breeding values.

In 2020, they purchased the complete herd of renowned Northern Victorian breeders Bernie and Carol McManus.

LEO MCGRATH –WOOTANGA PARK JERSEYS WESTERN VICTORIA

FOR the McGrath family of Western Victoria, investing in high genetic merit bloodlines has been a way to fast-track their transition towards a fully registered herd of high-performance Jerseys.

The correct transfer of new cows at herd recording will preserve the valuable genomic, performance and pedigree records, provide data accuracy and reliability, and maintain the premium value of their investments.

Eddie and Anne McGrath, dairy with their daughters Rachel and Maureen,

With nearly 60 years of production and pedigree data, the Bercar Jersey herd has been among the topranking Jersey herds in Australia since the inception of Australian Breeding Values (ABVs), ranking No.2 on the Australian Balanced Performance Index (BPI) at the time of the sale.

For Leo, the Bercar cows were the perfect foundation of his Jersey stud. “It was an opportunity that was too good to pass up,” Leo said. “It was a magnificent herd – not really ‘show’ cows – but cows with great body, nice udders and lots of potential to milk.”

Sharing his passion for breeding and breeding history with the young dairyman, Bernie provided Leo with handwritten pedigrees for each cow, tracing back to the 1960s to their genetic recovery origins.

“Rachael and I are very excited to continue that history and building these great cow families,” Leo said.

With the support of Bernie and his local herd recording team, Leo successfully transferred the records of the Bercar cows along with them decades of valuable data, maintaining the crucial links between their performance, pedigree and genomic data.

This allowed individuals such as Bercar Peer 85 (at 2yo) to maintain her breeding values, claiming the No.62 position in the Jersey rankings in DataGene’s April 2022 ABV release with a BPI +365 (April 2022).

Leo now plans to use genomic testing and strategic bull selection to build on these established pedigrees.

“Rachel and I have a real interest in breeding better cows,” Leo said.

“We’re trying to select the best bulls and carefully choose the right bull for each cow.”

Leo’s long-term goal is to have his herd listed among the top BPI Jersey

herds in Australia – along with a few show cows.

“I’d love to be able to show and sell my stud cows, and to breed top BPI cows and bulls,” Leo says. “But to build their profiles, I need that history and data behind them.”

While the transfer of the Bercar records occurred seamlessly, it was not the same for all of Leo’s investments. Recently Leo discovered gaps in the records of several of his new cows, including the highly ranked Brookbora Love Lies 748 EX-91.

Bred by Robert and Sandra Bacon of Brookbora Jerseys in Northern Victoria, Love Lies 748 was bought as a milking 2-year-old at the Global Impact Supremacy Sale in 2020.

Boasting a BPI of +298 (April 2022), the former IDW Youth Show Champion ranks among the top 5% of the breed.

However, when Leo added her to his on-farm herd management software, without notifying his herd recoding centre, he unknowingly created a duplicate National ID, therefore disconnecting her performance data from the broader herd improvement network.

If this error was not rectified, any performance and progeny performance data achieved at the McGrath’s would not contribute to future ABV calculations, as well as limiting her ability for potential production or performance awards at Jersey Australia.

Fortunately for Leo, the error was identified, and the records are being rectified by his herd recording centre.

“As soon as I realised what had happened, I contacted my herd test rep for help,” Leo said.

“We have since identified her correct National ID and are working towards getting her data history merged with the new records.”

By correcting the transfer error, Leo hopes Love Lies 748 will return among the top ABV listings published in August, with the goal of developing his own branch of the high genetic merit family.

“We want to build a top-ranking herd with cows like Love Lies as the foundation,” he said.

“Continuing her breeding is important to us, so it’s important to have the data right too.”
