nbelievably, 239 of our brothers and sisters in Israel were taken hostage on the morning of Oct. 7, 2023. Men, women, senior citizens and children were all brutally taken from their beds and into Gaza. As I write this article, 235 remain in Hamas’ custody (136 as of press time), four of whom we know have not survived their capture.

Growing our Jewish community with your help Jeffrey Feld Federation President/ CEO

halom! First, I want to thank and congratulate Rosalee Bogo for being our annual community campaign chair. I also want to thank Alicia Feldman, our development director. The two of them are a great team. In addition, I would like to thank everyone on the campaign cabinet for everything they have done and everything that they’re going to do, and I would like to thank all of the Federation staff for helping to make last month’s annual campaign kickoff possible.

Federation is stereotypically seen as the organization that calls you to ask for money. There is certainly some truth to that. But more importantly, Federation is the organization that uses those monies to help Jews in our community, our Jewish communal partners in this community, and to help Jews in need — the world over and especially in Israel.

Federation provides allocations and funding to ensure we have a vital and vibrant Jewish community.

Rather than going into specific allocations, let me just highlight what Federation helps make possible, by listing benefits you, your family or someone you know may have already received:

1) Your child/grandchild participates in BBYO B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, Jewish continuity.

2) Your child/grandchild participates in PJ Library.

3) You or your child/grandchild participated in Jewish life on a college campus, like a Hillel campus Chabad.

4) You participated in or attended the Jewish Film Festival from Beth Tikvah or the Sidney R Hoffman Memorial Jewish Film Festival from JCMI. 5) You or your child/grandchild has attended a Jewish day camp or Jewish sleep-away camp. Federation has been very helpful in providing financial needbased scholarships in a confidential way for families who might otherwise not be able to afford to send their children to this type of a program.

6) You or a family member have attended one or more sessions of a cultural series presented by various congregations.

7) You, a relative or someone you know is receiving benefits from the Holocaust Survivor program at the Baker Senior Center Naples or perhaps even assistance of some form for geriatric case management for frail elderly.

8) You or someone you know has participated in a Jewish Day of Learning from our JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council) or attended a Kristallnacht commemoration by the Catholic Jewish dialogue of our JCRC. Also, the antisemitism task force is helpful to our community, which comes from our JCRC.

9) You or someone you know has visited the Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center.

10) You or someone you know has participated in socialization and/or informal education programs the Federation helps to provide, such as Jewish Book Festival; WCA; MCA; Jewish Russian Cultural Alliance; Chanukah Menorah Lighting, which we were able to do for the entirety of Chanukah this year in our backyard; and, of course, the annual community menorah lighting in Mercato.

11) You or someone you know has participated in a Federation mission to Israel or a Jewish community in some other part of the world — Ukraine, Russia, Ethiopia, Cuba, etc. Or you might have had a relative that participated in Birthright Israel.

12) You or someone you know has participated in programs we have supported in Israel, such as Yad LaKashish, Neve Michael, Ethiopian National Project, Special in Uniform or the fortified playground and Sderot.

Folks, we partner with all the Jewish congregations in our community: Temple Shalom, Beth Tikvah, Chabad of Naples, Naples Jewish Congregation, Chabad of Bonita Springs and Jewish Congregation of Marco Island. We work together in the best interest of our Jewish community.

All that I have mentioned, and more, is what Federation helps to provide, thanks to your support of the annual community campaign.

I am proud and pleased to say that basically 100% of the people who attended

the annual campaign kickoff indicated that Federation is a part of their lives and what they do.

At the 2024 Annual Community Campaign Kickoff, I indicated that we have a goal of $1,750,000 this year and I thanked each and every one of you for being caring, committed and generous.

Because of you, we have built a vital and vibrant Jewish community. The annual community campaign supports the core of everything that we do. The needs continue to grow. In fact, the needs grow faster than the campaign.

We need your help to keep our community strong.

This is an appeal! Think about everything that we have — that we want to keep — in our community. Your gift to the annual community campaign is what will allow us to keep providing these kinds of opportunities.

ince Oct. 7, 2023, we have all been watching the tragic events in Israel unfold. I have heard over and over again from so many people, “I know I can send money to help with the plethora of needs now and ongoing in Israel, but what else can I do?”

Israel’s economy since before the founding of the state of Israel has been linked directly to tourism. My parents went there on their honeymoon in 1938! All that came to a screeching halt on Oct. 7, 2023. There is no way to know when the war will end but when it does, tourism will creep back slowly. What can you do to help Israel? Plan to go on our mission

in November. We have no way of knowing if it will actually happen, but if we plan for it and things are quiet, we will be doing a mitzvah by being there and showing our support.

We planned an itinerary before Oct. 7, so we may change it to include discussions and visitations to sites that were affected by the events of this war. But, whenever we plan a trip to Israel, we leave the schedule somewhat flexible so that we can see and react to conditions on the ground. And this trip, in particular, will give us a chance to thank our Abraham Accord friends for their support during this difficult period.

So, whether you have been to Israel often, like me, or have never been to Israel, this is an opportunity to show your support and love for Israel by showing up!

We will have two informational meetings — one on Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. and one on March 14 at 7 p.m. — both at the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center, to give information and answer questions. The trip is being chaired by me and Nat Ritter, with Jeffrey Feld as our staff person.

United against antisemitism

hristians and Jews United Against Antisemitism, a conference sponsored by CAMERA’s Partnership of Christians and Jews and Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, drew over 350 people to the Nina Iser Cultural Center on Nov. 30.

The conference, designed to bring local Evangelical Christian and Jewish communities together as a barrier to antisemitic activity in Naples and Collier County, featured Pastor Greg Ball of Destiny Church, Moishe Rothchild of the Israel Alliance and Rabbis Fishel Zaklos of Naples Chabad and Adam Miller of Temple Shalom. Mr. Mike Driquez, deputy consul general of the Israeli Consulate in Miami, offered an update and personal insights into the Oct. 7 atrocities and the war on Hamas.

According to program organizer Dr. Allen Menkin, “CAMERA provides a powerful response to antiJewish voices in the global media and academia. Its International Partnership of Christians and Jews also monitors events in the church world and stands in opposition to Christian antisemitism and anti-Zionism.”

This event was held to unite Christians and Jews in the fight against antisemitism and to provide information that equips us to be active in opposition to an evil that threatens the future of Western civilization.”

Preventative Pest Control Can Help Prevent Future Issues

Winter is here, and while we are blessed to live somewhere where the temperatures typically do not drop into snow territory, it does cool off enough to reset everything when it comes to insects and rodents.

Many rodents and pests are active in the winter. Mice, for example, seek shelter during the cooler months and are carriers of various kinds of diseases; they can easily enter through cracks in the concrete.

Once you’ve done your part, it is best to contact a pest control professional for an inspection. In fact, many pest control companies, like ours, offer a FREE inspection.

When temperatures invariably warm up near the end of winter and beginning of spring, the rising temperatures will also bring a renewed existence of pest and bug activity to your home. Being proactive and taking preventative measures during the cooler months will help to ensure your home is pest free in the spring.

Similarly, bugs that find a way into your home will wait out the cooler weather until the first extremely warm day and then come out of winter hibernation. After all, several types of spiders, roaches, wasps, and the dreaded bed bugs may slow down, but they won’t stop. In other words, just because you don’t see insects in your home, doesn’t mean that they’re not there. Chances are that webs, eggs, or nests are simply hiding safely inside; patiently waiting for spring to come so the new generations can infest your home.

It is important to determine and handle pest issues regularly along with taking preventative measures rather than waiting for a pest infestation to occur to act. By planning ahead, you can help enjoy a pest free summer and beyond. Keeping up with year-round pest control is one of the most important things a homeowner can do.

Even here in Naples and other areas of Southwest Florida, some bug and pest activity lie dormant in winter, but when the much warmer weather returns, so do they. Many people mistakenly feel that once spring and summer are over and the cooler months are upon us, that pest control can stop for the year. After all, pests are attracted to the warm weather and aren’t as active in the cooler months, right? Unfortunately, this is a misconception.

To protect your home, make sure that all entry points are tightly sealed off, including window and door screens. Make sure that leaves and branches are trimmed back from all home windows to keep pests from using plants as bridges into your home.

ights, camera, Matzah Ball! The 2nd Annual Jewish Federation of Greater Naples Matzah Ball, themed “A Night at the Jerusalem Light Festival,” was a vibrant evening enjoyed by all and a huge success!

The event took place on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023. It was a beautiful night. The moon was out, the stars were shining and the temperature was perfect. The event began at 7 p.m. with cocktails, appetizers and music. As you stepped into the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center, you left Naples and entered a world of lights.

The centerpieces were decorated with red anemone coronaria flowers (national flower of Israel), doves and bright lights.

The walls radiated with lights flashing from every direction. The drinks were poured into cups with lights that flashed as you drank.

Glow sticks, flashing sunglasses and bright lights galore were seen throughout the room. But the light display that

dropped jaws and stole the show was the radiant and glowing dance floor. As guests danced, lights danced below the floor, creating a beautiful and energetic effect that was contagious. When you combined the light displays with the Israeli-themed food provided by Sage Catering and music

by DJ Unek, it really felt like you were actually at the Jerusalem Light Festival.

As the cocktail hour ended, I gave a short speech, thanking everyone for coming and thanking event committee members for all the time, support and work they put into the event to make it such a success. I also acknowledged that while there is a war taking place and many Israelis and Jewish people are suffering, it is important now more than ever to come together as a community, be united and support Israel and our faith.

In fact, every dollar of net proceeds raised from the Matzah Ball went toward the Israel Emergency Relief Fund to support those in need.

Notice the Jewish Russians in neighborhoods near you

J

ewish Russian Cultural Alliance (JRCA) serves as “home base” for Jews from the former Soviet Union and countries that evolved after its collapse. We welcome Southwest Florida residents, snowbirds and visitors. In the bad olde days of the USSR, there were 15 republics. Most Americans did not learn their names, preferring, for simplicity reasons, to refer to first-generation Jews from the USSR as Russians.

Probably, because Russia was where most of their own ancestors hailed from.

I periodically convey that now it is the ex-Soviets turn to keep that “Russian” identifier that Americans had given us during our exodus from the USSR. “Russians” stuck and it’s not unsticking.

During the recent Kristallnacht commemorative services I attended, Bishop Frank Joseph Dewane of the Venice Diocese, who speaks sufficient conversational Russian, asked me: “Being originally from Kiev, do you identify as a Ukrainian or a Russian first?”

“Jewish” was my instant reply, “because they all think of me as a Jew first.” In the rising reality of domestic antisemitism in previously safe harbors, I think it is only one of the hundreds of important lessons we, the Russian Jews, have been wanting to share with our American neighbors ever since we first arrived, clueless and confused, having escaped the clutches of Soviet antisemitism and largely unaware of what being Jewish really means. Some communities, groups and individuals helped us understand that.

Decades later, many Russian Jews are relocating to Florida from various U.S. states, Canada and directly from countries that were the former republics of the USSR. Some relocate from Europe. This relocation is happening at warp speeds in certain communities in Estero and North Naples, specifically, as we all tend to pull our immigrant strings in search of a better place. Southwest Florida certainly attracts our compatriots with its usually great year-round weather, pleasant lifestyle, far better infrastructure

than that of the overcrowded cities we lived in before, ever-improving cultural life and very appealing fast-growing vibrant Jewish community.

Most Russian Jews are well educated, had excellent jobs/careers and raised wonderful families in immigration. The majority learned Judaism as adults and tend to prefer Chabad services. Many Russian Jews migrating into Florida lately were brought to the U.S. as children and are now fleeing economically and politically decaying states with their escalating anti-Jewish displays.

Russian Jews hold conservative values very near and dear. We already experienced the devastating long-lasting effects of socialism and its inevitable companions of racial discrimination, economic redistribution, social equity and similar social pursuits most American-born Jews have been endorsing.

Do not be afraid to get into a discussion of opposing values with your Jewish-Russian neighbors over an excellent homemade meal of borsch and blinis. In the traditional old-world style, truth is born during an argument, and it is an enlightening experience to all parties. Make your JewishRussian neighbors feel like they belong.

Russian Jews love Israel, worry about its fate, mourn its losses and celebrate its victories. 1.3 million Jewish Israelis speak Russian, nearly 20% of its population. The majority of us have mishpuha there. None of us forget that we left the USSR because Israel was there — that’s why the Soviet Jews were liberated.

Jewish unity through music with the Alta Rockers

he Alta Rockers is a group of vintage men who find fellowship playing music from their youth. With instruments comprised of nine guitars, a harmonica and a banjitar, they come together weekly to play, sing, improvise and laugh.

Over the past seven years, playing for Jewish and other nonprofits, the experience has become extremely meaningful to all involved. The Alta Rockers pride themselves on curating a growing song catalog that encompasses several musical genres.

Members include Don Belmont (Founder), Ken Anchor, Ken Brown, Harry Chertok, Buzz Cohn, Andy Ichel, Larry Israelite, Sam Miller, Rabbi Frank Muller, Randy Solomon and Alex Wertheim.

or several years, the Beading for Betterment project has provided custom-made special necklaces to be given to children at the Guadalupe Center in Immokalee. They are distributed to children there so that they have a Mother’s Day gift to give to their mother, grandmother or other special woman in their life. In addition to the children at the Guadalupe Center, necklaces have been distributed to children who participate in Jewish Federation of Greater Naples’ Shop with a Sheriff event for Christmas.

Whether you are an experienced “beader” or have never made a beaded necklace, please join the group for a fun beading session. All are welcome. There will be Beading for Betterment tables at the Temple Shalom Mitzvah Day on Jan. 21.

WCA welcome back luncheon, “Let Us Entertain You,” a huge success!

T

he Arthrex lobby was abuzz with excitement on Friday, Nov. 10, as 400 women arrived for WCA’s Annual Welcome Back Luncheon. Each year, this highly anticipated event provides the perfect opportunity for women to greet their WCA friends, many of whom they might not have seen since last spring. New WCA members were quickly drawn in and welcomed, something that WCA does so well. In fact, three tables of new members were seated with board members. Serving as the official kickoff to WCA’s upcoming season, this year’s luncheon marked the 16th year of WCA programming.

Darlene Muller and Debbie Lurie, the creative and super-organized luncheon chairs, and their talented and dedicated Luncheon Committee — Patti Boochever, Ann Cowen, Toby Kosloff and Robin Mintz — planned a beautiful afternoon. More than 50 volunteers worked with them, ensuring that everything was perfect.

Muller commented, “This event would not have been possible without the many volunteers who attended to every conceivable detail with efficiency, panache and flair. But the most important thanks and appreciation go to the 400 women who supported the luncheon.”

There were ooohs and ahhhs as women entered the festive hall, which was decorated with brightly colored balloon sculptures, each holding a microphone, hinting at the enjoyable entertainment that was to come. The tables looked spectacular, thanks to the Design and Décor Committee — Jamie Blatter, Charlene Kerner and Dorothy Schwebel. Robin Mintz did an outstanding job of incorporating the luncheon theme into the printed materials — from the invitation to the design of the printed program to the screens in the lobby featuring Jewish female comedians.

As Jeffrey Feld, CEO and president of Jewish Federation of Greater Naples (JFGN), stated, “Our being here today is a sign of our solidarity.”

JFGN Board Chair Dr. Nat Ritter took the opportunity to thank WCA for creating a feeling of community among women in Greater Naples. Following the Motzi, beautifully led by Lenore Greenstein and Cantor Donna Goldstein, we all enjoyed a delicious lunch. As women ate, they could view a slideshow of WCA events and activities from this past year on large screens at the front of the room.

After lunch, we were entertained by Chicago comedian Caryn Bark, who had us laughing aloud and nodding our heads in agreement as she spoke. Among her extremely humorous remarks, Bark pointed out the different “levels of driving” for senior citizens (only during the day but not at night, on the street but not on the highway and driving but not making left turns). She also described various “levels” of keeping kosher (at home but not in a restaurant, in only certain parts of the house and keeping kosher in the house but not in the garage).

Following Bark’s very entertaining performance, Sue Dean and Federation Program Director Reneé Bialek called the winning numbers for the 50/50 drawing. Boochever announced that this year the proceeds would go to the Israel Emergency Relief Fund. As a result of everyone’s generosity in purchasing tickets, WCA donated nearly $1,400 to the fund. Luncheon attendees also generously donated four carloads (more than 20 black trash bags!) of personal care items to Baker Senior Center Naples. The collection table

overflowed with donations that the Center will distribute to needy seniors in our community. Volunteers also delivered the colorful balloon sculptures to the Center for their enjoyment.

“We received many notes from women expressing how much they enjoyed the luncheon,” said Debbie Lurie. “No sooner did this year’s luncheon end than we started making plans for next year’s luncheon. It is truly an honor as well as a labor of love.”

Is it time to hand over the keys to your car?

W

e’ve all had the experience.

You are going somewhere with a family member or a friend and s/he volunteers to drive. You hesitate for a moment and then say: “You know what, let me do it. I’d rather drive.”

And then you hope your loved one or friend goes along with your suggestion without an argument. You feel a little guilty, but you know, without a doubt, that the less this person is behind the wheel, the better. Or, maybe, you are the one your friends and family are concerned about. It is unfortunate but ‘driving when old’ can be a serious problem, and most of us are completely unprepared to deal with it.

What are the facts? Good question.

The actual number of accidents involving older drivers decreases as age increases.

However, older drivers, especially after age 75, have a higher risk of being involved in a collision for every mile they drive.

The rate of risk is nearly equal to the risk of younger drivers ages 16 to 24. (And we all remember how we felt when our 16- or 17-year-old children went out with their friends.)

In 2020, about 7,500 older adults were killed in traffic crashes, and almost 200,000 were treated in emergency departments for crash injuries. This means that each day, 20 older adults are killed and almost 540 are injured in crashes. So,

although older persons with health issues can be satisfactory drivers, they have a higher risk of injury or death in an accident, regardless of fault.

But we are a driving society.

We learned to drive when we were young, and most of us are still driving today — 50, 60 and even 70 years later. Our cars give us mobility and freedom.

Most of us don't know how we would live without them. But, if we are honest with ourselves, we have to admit that we aren’t the same as we were when we took our driving tests all those years ago.

Our reflexes have slowed, our vision has dimmed, we don’t hear as well as we once did. And turning our heads to look for cars, pedestrians and cyclists? That’s another thing altogether.

So, what do we do?

How do we know when our friends or loved ones should no longer be behind the wheel? What are the signs? And once we figure it out, how do we ‘have the talk?’ What hope (and help) can we give them? And what if it’s us? What if someone tried to have ‘the talk’ with us?

What do we do then?

On Jan. 23, Katherine Freund, a renowned expert in the field of aging and

mobility, will provide information, suggestions and insights on how to help people we know and/ or love understand why they should no longer drive and how they can continue to live rich, fulfilling lives if they don't. She also will address what to do if we are the ones who should no longer be on the road.

Freund is the president and CEO of Independent Transportation Network of America, and she is an internationally recognized expert on the challenges faced by aging drivers. She was featured in the Wall Street Journal as one of the “12 People Who Are Changing Your Retirement” and on CNN’s “Breakthrough Women” series. She has received AARP’s Inspire Award, the Maxwell Pollack Award from the Gerontological Society of America, the Social Enterprise Alliance award for Leadership in Innovative Enterprise Ideas, among many others.

Freund has participated in more than 150 national and international panels and conference sessions on alternative transportation for older people.

s we enter this new year, our wish is that more people will stand up and speak out against the antisemitism and other forms of hatred continuing to spread throughout our country and the world.

As several Holocaust survivors recently stated, “... now is not the time to give up.

We will continue in the conviction that if the world truly takes history to heart, it will take a stand for humanity. And we implore you not to give up either. Step out from your corner. Extend your hand in empathy and peace.”

No matter where we live or are in life, we can have a positive impact on others.

Whether we take action in person, online or wherever we encounter hate, we can have an impact. The late Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor noted, “It is the individual who can and does make a difference even in this increasingly populous, complex world of ours. The individual can make things happen.”

We hope that our Holocaust education programs will inspire the next generation to be among those individuals who make a difference.

January will be a busy month at the Museum. We invite you to attend these special programs: Wednesday, Jan. 17

at 2 p.m. – “Rescue in the Philippines: Refuge from the Holocaust" sheds light on a little-known effort by a group of poker-playing Americans in Manila which helped 1,200 European Jews escape the Holocaust to safety in the Philippines.

Among the speakers will be some of their descendants. Reservations required — visit hmcec.org to RSVP. Saturday, Jan. 20 at 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. – Family Day Storytime with crafts and learning activities available for grades 5 and up. The story is “The Whispering Town,” an illustrated telling of the rescue of Danish Jews in 1943 by neighbors and fishermen who helped them cross to neutral Sweden. Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2-5 p.m. – Screening of the film “Defiance,” which tells the story of the Bielski brothers, World War II partisans who created forest camps which helped shelter and save Jewish refugees escaping the Holocaust in Eastern Europe. SWFL resident Ruth Bielski, daughter of the group's leader, Tuvia Bielski, will introduce the film.

Eisenhower, and four of the five Frieder brothers, cigar manufacturers from Cincinnati doing business in the Philippines.

Since its opening in April 2008, Ornstein has served as executive director Temple Shalom of the Jewish Community Centre of Krakow, Poland, an organization devoted to rebuilding Jewish life in Krakow and one of Poland’s most visible signs of Jewish revival. A native of New York City, Ornstein moved to Israel in 1994, lived on a kibbutz in the Negev desert for 7 years and served in a combat unit in the I.D.F. before moving to Poland in 2001 and lecturing in Modern Hebrew at Krakow’s Jagiellonian University Department of Jewish Studies for 6 years.

The assassination of JFK, Nov. 22, 1963. The US Capitol riot, Jan. 6, 2021. Now, for many Jews, especially those living in Israel, Oct. 7, 2023 will be an event etched in memory.

How many photos of this day have you seen? How many newscasts? How many emails relating to Oct. 7 have you read?

Amir Peleg, historian for the Claims Conference who lives in a moshav near Gaza, said “Every day we wake up on Oct. 7.” If you are a 2G, did you think “What if my parents were alive to have seen the massacre on Oct. 7?”

I was contacted by a number of 2Gs with that question and, of course, I have no answer. But on Nov. 20, I received the email report from Gideon Taylor, the president of the Claims Conference (claimscon.org). In that report, he told about Holocaust survivors in a nursing home in Ashkelon. These frail survivors and others then lived in a reinforced room that was funded from a grant from the Claims Conference. Taylor, who went to see these survivors, said he heard “stories of immeasurable pain.”

In the nursing home, Taylor met Holocaust survivor Yosef Winner, who told of the loss of two of his grandchildren. Later, Taylor saw the heartbreaking words Winner had written: “I survived the Nazi Animal fire in the concentration camps; my entire family perished in the terrible Holocaust. I detached myself from my deep roots and erected a monument in their memory, made of basalt stones. From the depths of despair, with determination and resilience, I clung to the earth and planted seeds in Zion...

But suddenly, on Oct. 7, 2023, from between the evil barbed wires, emerged the horrifying scenes of fire, dust, murder, and the terrible massacre of innocent lives, reaching me once again. My dearest grandson, Yahav, may his memory be blessed, was murdered while protecting his wife, Shaylee, and their one-month-old daughter, Shaya. And my dearest granddaughter, Hadar, may her memory be blessed, and her husband, Itay, may his memory be blessed, were slaughtered while defending their 10-month-old twins, Roee and Guy. Once again, I find myself exhausted, in despair, sinking. And I have no more land to hold onto."

Taylor continued to relate stories of other survivors who live in Ashkelon.

Ida Margolis and Shelley Lieb He said that he saw pain and anguish as well as their incredible strength. “There was sympathy from survivors for the suffering of people in Gaza during the critical campaign to defeat Hamas and bring the hostages home. The country is traumatized. How much more for Holocaust survivors living in a country once again grappling with uncountable loss, questioning how it happened and wondering what the future may hold.”

Other Claims Conference staff began visiting survivors, many who had been displaced. They and partner organizations delivered food and supplies.

Taylor heard stories of the Shoah intertwined with stories of the terrible attacks of Oct. 7. At a meeting, he

and others were joined by the heads of some of the major Holocaust education institutions such as Yad Vashem and Yad Mordechai.

“Many are engaged with helping displaced people from the north and south.

While grappling with the personal losses of friends, family, children in the army and hostages, they are also thinking about what this will mean for the future of Holocaust education. Just as so much has been done to document the Shoah, plans are under way to capture testimonies of what happened on that terrible Shabbat so that future generations will know,” said Taylor.

The Claims Conference and other organizations came to Israel to listen and learn and help. What can members of GenShoah do to help? Many of you have better answers than I do. All I can think of is write — write a check to the organizations that are really helping (do your research — don’t be misled by rhetoric), write letters to lawmakers, thanking when appropriate, asking when needed. And in the meantime, to quote what Robert Frost said he learned about life: “It goes on.”

he Jewish community of Southwest Florida will commemorate Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in Collier County on Sunday, May 5, 2024, 4 p.m. at the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center. It is a time for meditation, reflection and somber memorial.

We want to include the names to remember — the parents and grandparents of our local second (2G) and third (3G) generations of the Holocaust.

Our Open House/New Member Reception was designed and initiated last year to make new members feel welcome.

Everyone who joined between January 2023 and January 2024 will receive a personal call. All Gen-Shoah members are welcome to attend. The date coincides with the United Nations designated Holocaust Remembrance Day, Jan. 26.

The "Our Stories" GenShoah member get-together brings us together in a comfortable, inviting location to talk about our past and our present in the company of other 2Gs and 3Gs. Jewish Book Festival launches in a big way

We have heard from so many of you who enjoyed the Jewish Book Festival kickoff event on Dec. 3 with Mitch Albom, at which he discussed his recently released New York Times bestseller “The Little Liar.”

Here is just a sampling of some of the superlatives we have received from many of the 650 guests in attendance: “Mitch was mesmerizing, amazing, outstanding, deserving of the standing ovation, exceeded my expectations, privileged to be in attendance, fabulous, dynamic, heart-warming, passionate speaker.”

We are so excited that the kickoff was such a success. Our volunteers worked hard to make sure the evening went off without a hitch. And it did!

o say this biography is a departure from what we’re accustomed to in presentations at the Jewish Book Festival would be an understatement. The title gives it away: “Madam” is the true story of the impossible-toimagine life of Polly Adler, the legendary “Empress of Vice” for three decades in New York City. The tiny, uneducated teenager who left Belarus in 1914 and immigrated to “the Golden Land” as a nobody lifted herself to a legend as a — shall we say — bordello businesswoman.

The Roaring ’20s roared its loudest in her establishments, where politicians, attorneys, entertainers, journalists and cops came to drink champagne, play cards or backgammon, mingle with the important guests and sample the wares of alluring young women.

When one location got too hot, she moved her girls to another and the new address and phone number went out to clients, so she didn’t miss a night. The telephone came to symbolize her success and fortune. Although she handsomely bribed the cops, lawyers and judges, the occasional demand that Tammany Hall rid the city of all corruption and sin resulted in Polly’s arrest. But her payoffs and her own brilliance kept her from ever serving time.

The names dropped in this tell-all include politicians, journalists and famous stars of theater, nightclubs and movies as well as some of the most notorious gangsters in the Prohibition era. Author Applegate’s original research for more than a dozen years unearthed references to noteworthy clients as well as

starlets still waiting to be discovered. They had to earn money somehow, and many found their way to Polly’s posh brothels to engage in the oldest profession for a lot more than they could earn elsewhere.

With prostitution at the center of this biography, the book skillfully skirts what could easily have tripped into pornography. Instead, Applegate delivers a serious, incredibly researched and beautifully written book. I admire the numerous euphemisms Applegate uses for Adler and her industry.

Coben characters “Change,” Rock Hall of Fame, celeb roots, and more

ditor’s Note: Persons in bold are deemed by Nate Bloom to be Jewish for the purpose of this column.

Persons identified as Jewish have at least one Jewish parent and were not raised in, or identify with, a faith other than Judaism. Converts to Judaism, of course, are also identified as Jewish.

“Fool Me Once” is an 8-episode original series that premieres on Netflix on Dec. 31. It is based on a novel of the same name by bestselling author Harlen Coben, 60. His first novel, "Play Dead," (1990) was the first in a series of big selling mysteries and thrillers. Coben, who had a bar mitzvah ceremony, grew up in New Jersey.

Recently, Coben’s books have been made into successful mini-series. In 2021, his novel “Gone for Good” (2002) was turned into a Netflix mini-series and, in 2022, his novel “Shelter” turned into an Amazon Prime series.

“Funny thing:” Both novels were set in the USA, and both had clearly Jewish major characters. Both series had no mention that any character was Jewish and “Gone for Good” was “re-set” in France.

Many kvetch that Jewish character roles go too frequently to non-Jewish actors. More damaging, I think, is the constant practice of erasing the Jewish

background of a character when a novel, etc., is filmed. Sadly, I can’t get into “whys” here.

“Fool Me Once” is re-set in Britain.

The name of the novel’s lead character, Maya Stern, hasn’t been changed and, to be fair, Stern’s background is ambiguous in the novel. Here’s the capsule plot: Maya thinks her husband has been murdered until she spots him on a recent video.

Meanwhile her nephew and niece are looking into their mother’s murder and the question is: are the two cases related?

On January 1, ABC will broadcast (8 p.m.) a heavily edited video of the 2023 induction of persons into the Rock Hall of Fame. The ceremony happened on Nov. 3, 2023. Disney, which owns ABC, streamed the whole 2023 ceremony live (a first!). You can watch a video of that live event on Disney+ or you can watch the edited version on ABC. The influential and popular fourman band “Rage for the Machine” was inducted. Their drummer is Brad Wilk, now 55. “Rage” was formed in 1991 and, after 2000, they had several “break-ups” and reunions. They are currently together and playing concerts. Nice to note: When “Rage” played in Israel in 2000, Wilk recited a Shabbos blessing before his Israeli audience.

Al Kooper, 79, was inducted in a Hall category called “the award for musical excellence.” Basically, this means people who may or may not be musicians (but usually are) who have helped create great music for a long period of time.

Kooper, who plays guitar, began backing Bob Dylan in 1965. First in the studio, and later in some concerts.

He played in the studio with ’60s biggies like The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix.

He founded “Blood Sweat and Tears” but left before their big hits. (I think his one LP with “BS&T” is better than their “hit stuff.”) He has produced many hit albums.

On Jan. 2, the 10th season of the hit PBS series “Finding Your Roots” begins.

(Check local schedules). As I write this, I know which celebs will appear on the program, but the exact date they appear has not been released. Here are this season’s Jewish celebs: Michael Douglas, 79.

Of course, he is the son of the late Kirk Douglas. Michael’s mother wasn’t Jewish and Michael wasn’t religious most of his life. However, for reasons I can’t detail here, about 10 years ago, he began identifying as a Reform Jew. His son, Dylan, now 21, had a bar mitzvah (2015) in Jerusalem and, in 2015, Michael received the Genesis Prize for “Jewish

achievement.” Lena Dunham, 37, is best known for starring in and writing the hit HBO series “Girls.” Her father isn’t Jewish, and her mother is Jewish.

She identifies as Jewish. Iliza Shlesinger, 40, is a stand-up comedian and author.

She’s had several Netflix specials and she’s appeared in a few acting roles. She wed (2015) her husband, Noah Gaulten, 40, a prominent restaurant owner and food writer, in a “very lovely” Jewish ceremony.

“Self-Reliance,” a comedy thriller, will premiere on Hulu on Jan. 14. Here’s the plot: A sad man (Andy Samberg, 45) receives an invitation to win $1M by a reality TV game on the dark web. For 30 days, he must outwit hunters attempting to kill him. But there's a loophole: the hunters can only attack him when he's alone – so he tries to convince friends, family and strangers that they must stay with him 24/7.

The film was written and directed by Jake Johnson, 45. You’ve probably seen him in one of his many acting roles. His father was Jewish, but he was raised by his non-Jewish mother. Johnson is his mother’s maiden name.

For Jewish families, the sense of loss is compounded by tradition. Jews are profoundly connected to “l’dor v’dor” — “from generation to generation,” which emphasizes “Grandparents are much more than older relatives. Grandparents are links in the endless chain of generations, both stretching back in history and reaching forward to future generations.

They are conduits of wisdom, love and support. Experts confirm what history already proves: loving grandparents are among the major positive shapers of Jewish identity.” (Doorways.org) “Where do we go from here?” asks Sandy, Julie and so many other disappointed grandparents-in-waiting. Psychologists warn against pressuring adult children to explain their childless choice. Confrontations, judgmental comments, thinly veiled criticisms and even inappropriate jokes risk shattering family relationships and can lead to estrangement. Instead, experts advise a more positive approach.

If grandchildren are not in the picture, consider how you can create your own legacy by making a lasting contribution to society. If carrying on the family name is important, consider choosing one particular charity and regularly contribute in your own name.

If you long for a baby to cuddle, volunteer in a neonatal unit or become a foster grandparent. Use your nurturing

skills to visit isolated seniors or, with your friends who are grandparents, organize an outing so that you can share in the joy of engaging with lively and curious little ones. Finally, if passing on Jewish traditions is important to you, volunteer in a Jewish day school, at Sunday school events or spend time with the children in a synagogue’s after-school program.

For so many would-be grandparents not to have the joy of grandchildren has brought profound sadness, a sense of loss and confusion as to how to cope. For them, Ms. Langmuir advises acceptance when she emphasizes, “Ultimately, the decision about whether I will become a grandmother is 100% out of my control.

It is up to my children.”

How to cope? Rabbi Nachman of Breslau said it best when he declared, “It is a great mitzvah to be happy” and “It is forbidden to be sad.” Rabbi Nachman’s teaching acknowledges that struggle and sadness are inevitable but even negative emotions can motivate us to accept life on life’s terms and carry on.

The 2023 dish of the year that took Israel by storm

t the same time that many of us are at home struggling with the sadness and unpredictability that goes with war, some turn to the kitchen to alleviate their anxiety, and what could be more calming than the smell of fresh challah filling the house?

Since the flare-up of Operation Swords of Iron, more and more people are finding comfort in baking, but the trend that has taken Israel by storm goes a step further: bakers are posting photos and videos of challahs in various shapes, with the Star of David challah rising as an important symbol reflective of these times.

I made this Star of David challah for the first time on Hanukkah 2016 when invited to a Hanukkah dinner. I thought of making something that was appropriate and finally decided on challah bread, shaped as a 6-pointed Star of David. And I liked it so much that I made it a tradition.

When the Iron Swords War broke out, I felt that I wanted to show my pride in

my Jewish-Israeli heritage, and I express myself through food.

It all started with a photo. It was Friday, Oct. 13, and while I was doom-scrolling online, I stumbled across a photo of a Shabbat dinner table. It was set so beautifully. The Star of David challah was golden. The wine was corked. The tablecloth was crisp white. The calla lilies stood perfectly in their vases. The children’s plates and sippy cups looked just like ours. Everything on this perfectly crafted table sat untouched. And that’s when I realized that no one would be eating the Star of David challah at this table. It was set to honor the 200+ hostages taken by Hamas on Oct. 7. My eyes filled with tears, understanding that these hostages don’t get to eat challah bread with their families, but we do.

After seeing the photo of the empty table set for the hostages, I understood how much I needed to bake a Star of David challah right now. I understood

what a sense of joy it brings to our family, especially during this time of extreme sadness, anger and grief we’re feeling. And now, during one of the most depressing times I’ve ever had as an Israeli mother, I’m trying my hardest to give some sense of Jewish joy to my children.

I noticed that others felt the same; I was shocked to see how much people were turning to bake a Star of David challah for a sense of joy. I saw celebrities posting challah pics. I saw friends who I knew were Jewish, but never did Jewish things, posting their challah. Multiple invitations to throw challah bakes popped up in my inbox. The rituals and traditions of baking a Star of David challah were bringing people back to life, giving us a sense of comfort.

I found myself rushing to bake a Star of David challah for my family and friends that first Friday after Oct. 7 — and every Friday since. It seemed like everywhere I looked, I saw a beautiful Star of David challah, It warmed my heart and made me smile more than I had since learning about the tragedies and ongoing conflict.

This special recipe for a Star of Davidshaped challah has a rich history behind it. Grandmother-childhood-memoryevoking deliciousness! At my grandmother's house, challah was on the table every Friday night for Shabbat dinner. For years, her mother-in-law,

The beauty of this challah is that it is extremely simple to make — even if you have never braided challah before, it is nearly foolproof. It can be challenging but this challah rewards patience. It’s the best challah recipe you’ll ever taste!

Star of David Challah Ingredients 1 cup warm water 1 tablespoon active dry yeast 1/4 cup sugar (plus 1 tablespoon for egg wash) 4 tablespoons oil 1 tablespoon olive oil (for the egg wash) 1½ teaspoons salt 2 eggs (1 for the bread, 1 for the egg wash) 3½ cups flour (plus a little extra for kneading) Topping: sesame seeds Also needed: • Extra-large baking pan • Aluminum foil SERVING SOUTHWEST FLORIDA SINCE 1987

Directions 1.Pour the water into a mixing bowl and sprinkle the yeast over the water. Let the yeast set for 10 minutes until its nice and bubbly.

2.Add the sugar, oil, salt, 1 egg and 3 cups of the flour and mix well. Add the last 1/2 cup of flour as needed. Mix the dough until all ingredients are just holding together.

3.Set the dough in a warm spot and allow it to rise for about 2 hours.

4.Oil the baking pan lightly.

5.Take the raised dough and cut it into 2 equal parts. Roll out each piece of dough into equally shaped, long ropes.

Shape one rope into a triangle, directly onto your pan. Use the 2nd rope to make an inverted triangle over the first

6.Take aluminum foil and make into 6 small balls. Tuck one ball in each of the points of the star. These balls keep the bread from closing up the points when rising and baking.

7.Set the challah in a warm place and let it rise a second time for an hour.

8.Break the second egg into a small bowl and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of sugar to it and beat it well. Brush the egg wash all over the top of the challah. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

9.Preheat the oven to 375°. Bake the challah for 25 minutes. Allow it to cool before attempting to remove the foil.

I find it easiest to remove the foil by crushing it a bit then pulling it out from the back of the loaf.

Don’t repeat the lessons of history — heed them Marina Berkovich JHSSWF President

avid Ulee, Judah P. Benjamin, Abraham C. Myers, Ezekiel and Isaac Levy, Octavus S. Cohen, Julius Ochs … do you know who they were? Southerners! During the time when the United States were not so united. The inevitability of impending war pressed them and hundreds of other Jewish families of the South to choose between the Union, where many of them studied, made friends and made business and trade contacts, or the South, the land to which they were born or immigrated; established homes, professions and businesses; raised children; and envisioned generations of heirs multiplying their efforts of prosperity rooted in the principles of religion and honor.

But nothing goes as planned during wars — a truth we are witnessing over and over in our lifetimes. The Southern Jews are often blamed for owning slaves. They,

indeed, did during the era of worldwide open-markets slavery, as did all peoples who participated in it for thousands of years. There is nothing embarrassing about Southern Jewish slaveowners and patriots, who were frequently the same.

Yet, for frequently antisemitic reasons, their stories are hidden or extracted out of the context of their time as if to prove some politicized points.

The world always gangs up on Jews in times of difficulty. Nothing new. But history does not lie. It always teaches.

Revisionists lie and invert the truth.

Keren Berman, a Naples mother to three, knows it too well. She was in Israel on Oct. 7 and, after reuniting with her family in the U.S., she found herself amid the rise of anti-Israel demonstrations and such. Keren expressed the barrage of thoughts bombarding her wounded heart and mind in an impassioned statement.

Here is a small excerpt: “(We are being told to) (sic) Wait! They can’t see evil, the funders, professors, administrators and college students, on campus on U.S. soil… Wait! Wait! We said never again, is that not now? Wait! No soldier left behind enemy lines! Wait! Kidnap victims! 240 taken! Why?”

JEWISH WAR VETERANS

Did not the Jewish Confederate mothers cry out in 1861 like all Jewish mothers? Do not all mothers cry and weep for lost husbands, children, parents and peace?

The American Civil War was fought over slavery. Somehow, one false claim continues: Jews controlled slave trade.

Nearly 160 years after the last Civil War battle, slavery is still an issue to be debated, contested and misused by parties interested more in prolonging the impact of slavery for modern gains than in the equality of application of all citizens’ rights already existing under the U.S. Constitution.

Every year, Jewish groups in the U.S. march in support of the Black community in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parades.

Jews, a significantly smaller minority, always rise in defense of American Blacks.

Whether the entire United States of America rises to defend its Jewry remains to be seen. We will be here observing, recording, imparting the Jewish history as it happens. And bring it to you.

ore than 30 veterans and guests attending the November meeting of Jewish War Veterans Post 400 participated in a phone call with IDF Master Sergeant Matt “Motti” Charter in northern Israel.

The 46-year-old son of Fort Myers Post Commander Harvey Charter is part of a communication unit attached to a reserve commando division.

Motti told the group at Federation HQ that his unit has been training for deployment wherever they may be needed, adding that their primary concern is the northern border with Lebanon.

“Hezbollah is bigger and better equipped

than Hamas,” he said, adding that the IDF’s leadership is prepared to cope with whatever comes.

During the phone call, Matt thanked his father and members of the JWV for raising money so his unit could buy equipment like bulletproof ceramic plates for their vests, knee pads and gloves on the civilian market. Naples breakfast for Israel brings community together More than 200 people gathered to show solidarity and support for Israel

aples, Nov. 28, 2023 — On the morning of Nov. 28, this year's Giving Tuesday, more than 200 proud Naples community members gathered at the Daniels Pavilion at Artis—Naples to stand in solidarity with Israel and show their support for Jewish National Fund-USA. This year’s annual Breakfast for Israel was sold out in record time, with community members eager to stand with Israel in its time of crisis.

The highly anticipated annual event honored Jeanne and Neil Braverman for their unparalleled commitment to the land and people of Israel as members of Jewish National Fund-USA’s World Chairman’s Council, signifying $1 million lifetime giving.

Neil is a member of Jewish National Fund-USA’s Naples Board of Directors.

In addition, the Bravermans are recipients of the organization’s prestigious Tree of Life® Award.

Attendees were also moved to hear from Ezagui, a decorated squad commander in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), who shared his captivating story about being one of the only soldiers in the world who lost an arm in combat and returned to the battlefield. Now a reservist who rejoined his elite IDF unit in Gaza this past month, Ezagui delivers inspirational talks across the United States and internationally.

In the wake of Oct. 7, when Hamas committed atrocious crimes against humanity in towns and kibbutzes in Israel, the event focused largely on Jewish National Fund-USA’s decades of partnership with those communities and their work in meeting the emergency needs of Israelis during this time. More than 130,000 Israelis in the north and the south have been displaced due to the war, and Jewish National Fund-USA is meeting their needs from housing and meals to education and health care, and so much more, all thanks to the support of its engaged and broad community in Naples and beyond.

Describing the organization’s work, Jewish National Fund-USA Naples Board Co-President, Dr. Norman Isaacs said, “Within 24 hours, Jewish

ven before Oct. 7, an uneasiness was apparent between supporters of the Palestinians or Hamas and Israel. This is possibly my own prejudice, but the Palestinian side is seemingly unfazed by many historical truths in their relationship with Israel and other Middle Eastern countries. By the same token, Israel’s supporters may have not taken the time to truly understand the Palestinians' allegiance to their traditions.

Since Oct. 7, this division has deepened, particularly among the younger generations. As I have written in earlier articles, the three youngest generational groups are the first to be significantly more sympathetic to the Palestinians' situation rather than Israel’s existence.

One consequence of this change is revealed in anecdotal stories in the press

and online from Jewish students and teachers talking about being harassed or feeling threatened by antisemitic and/ or anti-Israel students and protesters.

For example, a Queens, NY high school teacher posted her support for Israel on Facebook. When this post became known to the students, many immediately began protesting in school. The teacher locked herself in her classroom, remaining there until NYPD officers arrived, escorted her out and quieted the protestors. Her name and address were then posted, effectively enabling this hate to spread — all because of her support for Israel. There were no reports of similar pro-Israel protesters rioting in the school then posting the names of the Palestinian supporters.

Hillel and ADL have posted interviews with university students, detailing how they have taken steps to downplay their Jewishness or held back on expressing a positive opinion of Israel for fear of retribution. This behavioral change is in response to the overt actions of protestors during marches or other mass actions identifying Israel as a colonizer and oppressor of Palestine.

Trends of the last 40 or 50 years have nurtured the growing acceptability of anti-Zionism/antisemitic agitation and the characterization of Israel as a usurper of land using excessive force for control.

There are many factors that brought this about: the surge in progressive ideology on campus; the growth and impact of groups such as Boycott, Divest and Sanction (BDS) (a foundational organization); Jewish Voices for Peace; Students for Justice in Palestine; et al. The goals of these groups were buttressed by the expansion over the last 17 years of Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) from one to currently 200 plus campuses. IAW bills itself as a tool for mobilizing global grassroots support for the Palestinian struggle.

In response, Jewish students organize some counter-programing, but IAW presentations have the advantage of long experience. A major Jewish advocate, CAMERA, which promotes accurate and balanced coverage of Israel, often works with Jewish campus groups to create a rebuttal presentation. However, in a number of instances, the IAW supporters have disrupted this

counterprogramming to limit its impact.

Likely of greater importance is IAW’s adoption of the BDS technique of actively teaching its participants how to “organize against Zionism and normalization (my emphasis) on campus and in our communities.” Anti-normalization forbids dialogue with “Zionists,” or anyone who supports the existence of the state of Israel. This approach to cancel out the pro-Israel groups clearly diminishes meaningful dialogue.

Nonetheless, dialogue and factual presentations are the best avenues to put forth a pro-Israel position — while still allowing for divergence of opinion on key issues, like settlements, citizenship and passage of supplies into Palestinian areas.

So, what is a practical response to this troubling situation? Becoming personally involved and financially supporting front-line groups that are directly involved with the younger generation groups.

Jewish camping, BBYO, Hillel, CAMERA, ADL and many other directaction organizations will benefit from your efforts.

We have brought back the Chicagobased a capella group Listen Up!, who will grace us with their unique brand of Jewish music. The quartet is made up of a bass/percussionist, a tenor/bass, a tenor and a mezzo-soprano. The group was founded in 1992 by Steve Singer, the “chief noisemaker.” Their mouths are their instruments.

Career development program for aspiring sports media professionals Maccabi Media Program (MMP) — London, summer 2024

M

accabi USA and Maccabi Media are proud to present a career-development program offering a unique international experience for aspiring sports media professionals who are Jewish. Following a comprehensive application process, a team of students will be selected to cover the European Maccabi Youth Games (EMYG) in London from July 28 to Aug. 6, 2024. The application process is now open and will close on Jan. 14, 2024.

Eligibility

• College undergraduates who are Jewish and 18+ years old on July 28, 2024 • College graduates who are Jewish and no older than 25 years old on July 28, 2024 • Applicants must be enrolled in, intend to enroll in or already graduated from a university-level communicationsrelated program, such as sports media, communications, TV/radio/film production, journalism, digital media, etc.

Duties/experience required

Participants will perform several of the following sports media roles while covering the European Maccabi Youth Games and must show previous experience in as many of these areas as possible: • Shooting and editing video for daily packages

• Sports reporting (interviewing & writing articles) • Social media content creation • Play-by-play, color analysis, sideline reporting and live event production/streaming will not be included in this program but are valuable skills participants are encouraged to demonstrate on their submission materials.

• Sports photography, graphic design (Canva, Photoshop) and website management skills are also highly valued.

Submission materials

All applicants must write a short essay plus submit a resume, demo reel, examples of written/social media work and media/school references. Specific submission requirements will be provided after you apply.

Training, costs and other considerations

Those selected for MMP will be notified no later than Feb. 1, 2024 and must commit to attend all virtual training and the Games. Monthly Zoom training will begin in February and include assigned written and video projects.

Selected team members (as well as all USA athletes) will have a financial responsibility of $6,650 plus a $36 application fee. This fee will cover expenses for registration, international airfare, accommodations, transportation, meals, equipment, medical insurance, Maccabi apparel and workshop events.

For candidates selected, all efforts will be made to provide financial assistance for those in need to help offset some of the program costs so that should not be a barrier to apply.

Maccabi Media team members must have a valid passport good through Feb. 7, 2025.

Maccabi USA will provide any documentation if students are able to receive college credit for this program.

Students selected for London will receive special consideration for our 2025 Maccabiah media team in Israel.

Updates from BBYO Naples and Fort Myers

n Saturday, Nov. 18, our teens held a meaningful Havdalah ceremony focusing on the IsraelHamas war. The six teens shared their thoughts on the current conflict in Israel with the support of their BBYO friends.

Two of our teens attended the AllFlorida Fall Convention, which was held Nov. 17-19 in Fort Lauderdale.

This weekend-long Shabbaton hosted members from the North Florida Region, Florida’s Gold Coast Region and the Miami-Dade Region. The teens had a nice time reuniting with their NFR friends and meeting new BBYO friends from the Gold Coast and Miami-Dade regions. They also participated in fun and educational programs, such as spiritual meditation through beatboxing, culinary presentation and social media, responding to antisemitism and creating make-up and body scrubs.

We held our first Naples BBYO fundraiser on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at California Pizza Kitchen’s Waterside Shops location.

We also participated in BBYO’s international fundraising campaign called GivingBBYO Day, on Nov. 28. Thank you to all the donors for their generosity by contributing to our fundraisers.

We were excited to celebrate BBYO’s Global Shabbat on Friday, Dec. 8 at Lowdermilk Beach in Naples.

What is BBYO?

BBYO is a diverse and inclusive Jewish youth group to encourage Jewish teens to become more immersed and interested in meaningful Jewish activities and programs. Our organization accepts Jewish teens attending 8th through 12th grades of all backgrounds, sexual orientations, gender, race, denominational affiliation or socioeconomic status. BBYO currently reaches over 70,000 teens worldwide, with participants in over 60 countries and hundreds of chapters across the United States.

It is crucial to engage teens post-B’nai

Mitzvah age in Jewish activities. Having teens get involved in BBYO and be eager to create and confidently continue their own Jewish community within their greater Jewish communities is critical to our future.

The BBYO chapter of Naples has entered its 11th year of partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, Temple Shalom, Chabad of Naples and Beth Tikvah. Each organization provides financial support, volunteers and community involvement opportunities for the BBYO teens. We thank each and every one of our BBYO alum, friends and other supporters for making this a safe and positive environment for the teens of BBYO Naples and Fort Myers.
