“HOW DID IT GO?” Wisniewski asked as he
came into Nowak’s office in the early afternoon. “As you would expect. She painted a picture of a normal life. We promised her we’d have a look into the accident and go through the reports she’s made in the last six months one more time.” “Well,” said Wisniewski, “the reports won’t show much that we don’t know already, unless they can be connected in some way. I’ll be honest with you, we’re only doing this because she’s a friend of a friend…” “I see,” said Nowak shaking his head. “So do you know anything we should know?” “Nothing,” said Wisniewski. “Do what you said, Robert. If nothing jumps out at you, then we’ll just have to tell her that’s that.” Once Wisniewski had left, Nowak suggested a plan to Pawluk. “What do you think about dividing our duties on this? You have a look through the reports and I’ll go and have a word with the accident investigators.” “It means we’ll waste less time on it, I suppose.” Nowak left Pawluk rereading the contents of the file, and went to call the accident investigators. The man who had conducted the crash investigation suggested that Nowak pay him a visit and he could show him all the material connected with the crash. An hour later, Nowak was sitting in the investigator’s office, being shown a file of information containing reports, photographs, measurements and plans of the accident site. After Nowak had looked through it and the investigator had explained a few details, Nowak asked him what he thought. “Nothing out of the ordinary. It’s the sort of accident that happens on average once or twice a week. The driver gets distracted. Or maybe he falls asleep. It only takes a second. The car leaves the road and that’s that. If there’s trees at the side of the road, like in this case, the chances of a fatality increase.” “I suppose so,” said Nowak. “What about some kind of technical failure as an explanation?” “It’s possible. But the car was quite a wreck in this accident, so it’s hard to say.”

NOWAK HAD PAID the bill and was leaving
the hotel to go to the car, where Pawluk was waiting. From behind him he heard a familiar voice. When he turned round it was the old man from the hotel bar. “Have you enjoyed your stay then?” he asked. “I think we’ll bring the skis next time,” said Nowak smiling. “And your friend? Did you see him?” “We did…” replied Nowak, not wanting to elaborate, “…we did.” The detectives set off in an atmosphere of gloomy silence, but after they passed through Przemysl, they became more talkative. “His note was very elegiac,” said Nowak. “Well, he was a writer, wasn’t he. It’s regrettable he didn’t say a bit more though,” said Pawluk. “It would have been nice if he’d given us all the answers.” “It would,” said Nowak, “but on the other hand, we’ve got some interesting days ahead. It’s better than investigating burglaries in hotel rooms, isn’t it?” “Is it?” said Pawluk, sounding unconvinced. “We’re still left with three murders to sort out. We don’t even know who the victims are. And we know the person behind the crimes can no longer help us.” “You’ve got a point. I think we’d better make a trip to Silesia a priority. We need to find out a bit more about Belski’s background. We’ve only had his books to help us so far. And the small amount of information Pawel Jonas gave us.” “We’ll have to find out why he signed his note The Professor. It might be significant.” “First we’d better get back to Warsaw and update Wisniewski with what’s been going on,” said Nowak. They drove on in silence. “You know,” Nowak said after a while, “the formalities are going to be interesting with this.” “How do you mean?” asked Pawluk. “Well, there’s the paperwork to fill in. And we’ll have to go and speak to Mrs Jackowska and Henryk Pawlowicz. But first we’re going to have to work out what to tell them.” “The truth I suppose. Just that. sleep, the two detectives arrived at the police station mid-morning. Once they had spoken to Wisniewski, they began to look into Belski’s background. They sat in Nowak’s office making phone calls and searching through official records in government offices on the internet. Nowak soon found confirmation that Belski’s father’s death was officially recorded as an accident. “It looks so tame,” he said to Pawluk. “‘Cause of death: drowning’. There’s no suggestion of events before it or the tragedy that followed.” “That’s official records for you… I’ve found out about his mother.” “And?” asked Nowak. “She died in 1992. ‘Cause of death: heart failure’. It doesn’t say much either, does it? And Belski’s death will be recorded as suicide. That’s slightly more suggestive I suppose.” “So, now we know that his parents are both dead. Belski had no brothers or sisters, nor did his father. What about his mother?” “An only child.” “We already know his wife died of lung cancer two years after their divorce. So that doesn’t give us much to look into.” “No. But there is his ex-wife’s sister,” said Pawluk “She had a sister?” “Yes. Anna Baranska. I’ve got an address for her and a phone number. She’s sure to know something. She might know about things in his past… where he worked... That sort of thing. If we can find the taxi company or some of his old workmates then maybe they can tell us something as well.“
