ASSOCIATION

From the General Manager Here we are in December. This year has gone by so fast. When I think of this last year, and reflect on everything that has happened in my life and those around me, I can’t help but smile. You realize how truly blessed you are to have family and friends who support you no matter what. Family

Now that the holidays are upon us, there are some guidelines that need to be followed regarding holiday lights and decorations. On Page 18, #8.3 of the ARC guidelines, it states the following:

New Visitors Management System: Approved. This project is in the works and we hope to have it started mid-December.

Fall decorations may be displayed from October 1 to November 30.

New front and back community gates: This project was presented to the board in November.

Winter decorations may be displayed from November 15 to January 31.

All holiday decorations may be displayed no more than 15 days prior to the holiday and removed within 15 days after the holiday.

The 2022 budget has been approved and mailed to all owners as of November 4th.

Leann Blue, General Manager

and friends are hidden treasures. There are friends, there is family, and there are friends who become family. Take time this holiday season to reflect on your life and remember those who have come into our lives. Cherish every moment because, like I said in the first line, “time goes by so fast”.

Have a wonderful December. Happy Holidays and remember to stay safe, stay healthy, and please be kind to one another.

Board Talk As 2021 draws to a close, I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our residents, volunteers, and our Management Company staff for their contributions in making the overall living and lifestyle experience here in Corte Bella the best it can be. We continue to thrive because of a teamwork

Michael McVeigh, CBCCA HOA Board Vice President

spirit. I’m extremely grateful for your tremendous efforts and wish you all a joyous holiday season. This is our 16th holiday season here in Corte Bella and we look forward to celebrating many more milestones with our community in the future. Last month I attended several community events and I continue to meet new residents that are experiencing many of our events for the first time. One resident told me after moving here from a nearby active adult community, they continue to be amazed at the number and quality of events that are available. Big thanks to our lifestyle manager, Pam Lawrence, for listening to our residents and for trying new things.

events are sold-out (or close to it) for the entire season. The CB Vets have a new President this year with Donna Norton. I’ve been proud to be part of this group since its beginning in 2014 and also to know that over $280,000 has been donated to Veterans’ needs since that time. December is filled with many entertainment options for our residents, and the Annual Corte Bella “Walk-About-Night” will be held on Friday, December 3rd at dusk on Christmas Street. We have many new residents that have never seen this event. It’s one display you will never forget. Thanks to the residents that make this happen each year for our benefit. Other holiday events are detailed in this edition with the New Year’s Eve Gala Celebration closing out the year. Our Anacapa staff will be busier than ever this time of the year, so please let them know you appreciate their efforts. The upcoming events such as the Holiday Christmas Tree Lighting and Dinner Buffet; Holiday Golf Cart Parade & Buffet; Christmas Eve Holiday Buffet; Hanukkah, the Lighting of the Menorah, and other private events will provide all residents with many options to celebrate the good life we enjoy living here in Corte Bella. As always, your Board remains dedicated to our mission of serving all residents of Corte Bella in the best possible way. It is our pleasure to serve. The entire Board of Directors wishes you all the best for the holiday season and a joyous New Year.

SOuL’s annual charity fund-raising Salsa Fest was an outstanding sold-out event. Congratulations to the winners, all of the participants, and the attendees that made this event a success. It’s great to see Pasta Night in the Anacapa return. I attended and was pleased to see the large turnout. Another popular event venue returns this year with The Friends of Italy. Each of their

The next Board workshop will be held Friday, December 17th and the next Board meeting, Wednesday, December 22 at 10:00 am. The December meetings are being held earlier than usual due to the holiday season. Your thoughts, opinions and concerns are very important to me as your Board Vice President. Contact me at any time, at mmcveigh3@cox.net.

“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!” I recently had to indicate for a website’s security question what is my favorite holiday. I didn’t have to think very long as Christmas is definitely my choice. I love the decorations, the gift-giving, the music, and even the tradition of sending Christmas cards. As our community celebrates this magical time of the year, my hope

or pick up a Salvation Army Christmas Angel at the Fitness Center (and make the dreams of an underprivileged child come true this year). You can also do the same for a military veteran in need – take a tag from the CB Vets patriotic tree located near the Anacapa. You could make an impact on someone who is really in need of a gift. Corte Bella has always been so generous during the holidays. With your help, our community will continue to shine brightly in the Northwest Valley. Make sure to come to SOuL’s fund-raising Holiday Bake Sale and Boutique on December 18th!

From the Editor’s Desk

Linda Wright, Editor CB Times for you is that your celebrations are filled with good memories with friends and family. Make plans to gather at the Anacapa, attend one of the HOA events planned for this month, enter your golf cart in our annual Christmas Golf Cart parade

From all of us who contribute to and work on CB Times each year (since 2007), may you smile every day of this magic month. May your new year be one of promise, good health, and many possibilities.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and Happy New Year!

CULINARY

Our Own Anacapa… Delightfully New! Chelle Mestemacher, West Valley Photo Club What’s new?

Each week, Jill Machay, our Food & Beverage Manager, will be featuring a “Specialty Drink”. This Saturday afternoon though our lovely Stephanie Martin mixed up a favorite, the tasty traditional “Cosmo”. She makes it look easy. No surprise there. Stephanie’s been tending the bar for over eight years; she knows her stuff. She’s stayed around all these years because she loves the residents.

In mid-October, the Sunday Anacapa Breakfast Buffet started back up. Popular among residents and visitors, this marvelous spread has a mouthwatering assortment of rolls, pastries, fruit, eggs made the way you like ‘em, and waffles. And, there’s pancakes, biscuits and gravy, other breakfast meats, and a breakfast special. Whew! Ty and Clara enjoy taking good care of the buffet and the customers, and always have smiles on their faces. All this for $20! And … $5 Mimosas and Bloody Marys! Got to be the best deal in the Valley.

On Sunday, October 17th, Rayden demonstrated his omeletprep expertise, preparing a Denver Omelet right before my very eyes. Ten years on the kitchen staff, he’s an expert! You choose the ingredients and he’ll custom cook it just for you. Having him make your omelet, your way, makes the buffet that much more enjoyable. All in all, our Anacapa staff are excited about “cooking up”, and pouring a wonderful new season for us all. You’ll discover the new selections on the Lunch Menu from the Specialties, Salads and Sandwiches. And new Dinner Menu choices, like “Grilled Chicken Pesto Pasta”. I was privileged to watch Earnest Barrs, the Anacapa’s new interim Executive Chef, preparing this dish from start to finish, using in-house freshly prepared pesto. I’ll attest to its “delish-iosity”, as Earnest graciously sent it home with me in a to-go box … yummy!

[Author’s Note: The West Valley Photo Club meets in the Corte Bella Social Hall as guests of Corte Bella. We thank you each year by “Paying It Back” to this welcoming community.]

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained and IRScertified each year to ensure they know about and understand the latest changes and additions to the U.S. Tax Code.

by COVID-19. We will continue to follow a drop-off method for preparing returns this year, which lessens the amount of faceto-face contact with clients. We hope this year to prepare more tax returns but will need your help! AARP Foundation TaxAide is looking for compassionate, friendly people to join our team of volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Below is a brief description of the positions we have available: •

Administrator: Helps to keep the operation running smoothly, helps with scheduling volunteers and contacting clients to pick up returns that are completed.

Greeter: Greets clients as they arrive. Ensures they are filling out required forms.

Pre-Counselor: Interviews clients and puts paperwork in order (like documents together).

Counselor: Reviews paperwork and inputs data into tax program, TaxSlayer.

Quality Review: Reviews information with client; ensures accuracy and e-files the return.

If you are interested, you can email us at scwtaxes@gmail.com or go to the AARP Foundation web site to register at https://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/aarp_ taxaide/. Training will begin in January 2022, and at this time, we do not know if it will be in-person, virtual, or a mix of both.

At our Sun City West location in the Sun City West Foundation building on the corner of RH Johnson and Stardust, we prepared just under 1,100 returns in 2021, which is down due to restrictions imposed

Residential Design Guidelines:

Section 15.3

Section 3

No exterior alteration, addition, renovation, or modification of any Dwelling Unit, Common Area, porches, patios, courtyards, landscaping, walls, or fences will be allowed on any Lot without application to and written approval by the ARC. Each Owner is responsible for removing or otherwise curing, at their own expense, non-complying and/or unapproved improvements.

Section 15.2 •

This section explains the procedure for you to follow when submitting for changes and additions. Please review the guidelines and submit a complete package to the HOA office. Your ARC will either review within a couple of days via email if it is not a complicated plan, or during their next monthly meeting. Not having a complete package slows this process down for you.

This section explains the procedure for you to follow after your approved project is complete so ARC can complete the Post-Completion Inspection. Use the form provided with your approval and please complete it in its entirety.

Remember, your ARC members are all volunteers and any incomplete form and package requires additional work for them and/or the HOA office. In summary: Submit your plan to make changes to the exterior of your home. Once approval is received, you can complete your project. Then submit the form for a post-project completion inspection. Once it is confirmed you did what you said you were going to do and what was ARC approved, the package goes in to your file and all is well!

From Your Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee (NASC) Steve Dodder (Vice Chair) We would like to take the opportunity to introduce the new members of the Neighborhood Awareness and Safety Committee: Curtis Dreese (Chairperson); Steve Dodder (Vice Chair); Keith Pellien, Dean Folk, Carolyn Pakan, Jim Starkman, Tivoli Faaamu, and Catherine Kelly (Board Liaison).

Please be cognizant of the fact that criminals have no boundaries. Therefore, you should always be aware of your surroundings. In fact, most crime is a matter of opportunity. It is every resident’s responsibility to secure your home when your away and prior to retiring for the evening. The NSAC will be publishing a monthly article in the Corte Bella Times, so be on the lookout.

From the Government Affairs Committee (GAC) Your GAC continues to prepare for the as yet unscheduled Maricopa County Planning and Zoning Commission meeting to consider the rezoning application of Republic Services (which would allow for a waste transfer station at the West Wing Industrial Park near Corte Bella). Please refer to the recent eblast for instruction and guidance on how to register your opposition

to this proposal, both with the Maricopa zoning commission and the county board of supervisors. Your participation is vital. Letters can be dropped off at the HOA Office to be included with the GAC formal submission package. Thank you for your help to prevent heavy industrial development near our community.

Corte Bella Vets Happenings Karen Starkman The results of our October 23rd Gala Dinner Dance Fundraiser are in but first we would like to thank our Fundraising Director, Bev Brown, her team, and all those who made this event possible. A special thanks to all who attended, purchased raffle tickets, and donated to this event. A total of $7,744 was raised to help veterans in need of our assistance.

required car repair assistance so that his wife (primary care giver) could transport him to doctor appointments and to a daily memory care facility. The Corte Bella Vets helped in the amount of $1,600, which brought the veteran’s wife to tears! Stop by our Veteran’s Angel Tree, located in the Anacapa Breezeway until December 15th, and pick up a tag. Simply choose a tag, purchase the specified gift, and place your wrapped gift, with a Christmas card enclosed with the tag tapped on top, in the box provided. Please do your part and bring a smile to a veteran this Christmas. For many of our veterans, it’s often the only gift they will receive during the holiday season.

Through your generosity, we were able to assist two veterans this past month. One veteran, vetted by AmeriCorps, required assistance with gas money to travel to and from work and $200 in gas cards were provided. Another veteran, suffering from Alzheimer’s (vetted by the VA Clinic located on Grand Ave.),

Mark your calendars for our 8th Annual Corte Bella Vets Golf Tournament. The tournament with be held at the Corte Bella Golf Club on March 19, 2022. We are currently putting our teams together but if you don’t play golf you can volunteer, become a sponsor, or purchase a T-Box sign. For further information and to register for the tournament visit our website www.cortebellavets.org

Let’s Get Our Shine On! Ask Agnes

It won’t be long before the holidays are here! Put some shine in the rooms your guests are likely to see. Yes, that would be the bathroom. Bathrooms take a hard beating with water, soaps, lotions, and potions all over the place. How to treat that? Gel Gloss! I usually have to look at a few places to find this product. Wal-mart, Home Depot, Lowes are a few places where I’ve found it. It’s easily applied with a soft dry cloth, much like waxing a car. Let it dry to a haze. Go straighten a drawer for few minutes. Then using a (clean and dry) soft cloth, wipe off the haze. Voila! A nice shine appears! The shine will protect the counter by repelling stains and water spots. When the shine fades after a few months (depending on use), simply reapply.

I happen to love that it repels water spots. This makes tidying the bathroom very easy. A quick wipe with a damp microfiber cloth makes it all look great. I use Gel Gloss on my shower walls, tubs, sinks and glass shower doors, and faucets too. The “reflection” of a shiny bathroom will help make you shine as a host/hostess.

The Many Facets of Bonnie L. Gentry Corte Bella resident, Bonnie L. Gentry (her middle initial is important so she isn’t identified with a certain Country Western Singer and events that may or may not have transpired on the Tallahatchie Bridge), was born in Montana but raised in Phoenix. She moved to the Phoenix area in 1960 with her parents and one sister. Her father was a mailman and her mother worked as a medical transcriber. A graduate of Paradise Valley High School in 1971, Bonnie is in charge of her high school class’50th reunion this coming January, which will be held in the Corte Bella social hall. Following her high school graduation, Bonnie attended the University of Arizona where she earned a degree in French. Her plan to become an international flight attendant with Pam American Airlines was thwarted by the company’s vision requirements. As Plan B, she was in retail management followed by a stint as a real estate broker before settling in as a financial planner with Merrill Lynch, working in both Scottsdale and Sun City. Bonnie retired in 2013 as a Vice President and Certified Financial Planner. Bonnie married Rich Zell in 1988. She has two stepchildren and four grandchildren, living in Kansas City and Denver. Bonnie and Rich are Corte Bella original owners, buying their property in 2003 when Corte Bella was just an architectural concept on paper. They were one of the first forty buyers in the new development. They continued to live in Scottsdale for eight years, coming to Corte Bella on weekends before moving here full-time. Bonnie states that the people of Corte Bella, the amenities, the gated community security, and the feeling that Corte Bella is a “slice of paradise” is what keeps them here. Bonnie is a woman of many interests and talents. She is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (serves as a state committee chair) and is involved in genealogy projects with that organization as well as independent research. She is an avid exotic traveler, a cruise enthusiast, and an accomplished “re-stringer” of Madame Alexander collectible dolls. Bonnie’s mother had 150 of those dolls and upon her death willed them to Bonnie’s niece. The niece preferred to sell the dolls but many required repair. Bonnie learned how to repair these dolls and, since 2021, has fixed 500 of them. She buys collections, does the repairs using an innovative technique involving elastic cord, and then resells them to collectors. Bonnie is an active member of SOuL, an avid Mah Jongg player, and also enjoys playing Hand & Foot Canasta. She is also a member of the Corte Bella Finance Committee, serving on the Investment sub-committee.

Bonnie’s big interest started in 2003 when she realized that she had a talent and vision for creating crossword puzzles. She stressed that she is not a “solver” but a developer/creator. After finding a program that laid out a grid, she loved developing a theme and carrying out what she focuses on for the puzzle. Bonnie finds the challenge of making something symmetrical, fresh, and encompassing new ideas really give her an opportunity to learn with every puzzle. She stresses that research is a huge part of the puzzle development process. She reads constantly and is a good speller. Bonnie creates daily puzzles, Sunday puzzles and Colossal (Jumbo) puzzles. A daily-size puzzle will take about three to four hours to create while the Sunday-sized variety is just an expanded daily puzzle. However, the Colossal piece takes the better part of a year to develop. Bonnie estimates she has had over 500 puzzles published “on spec” over the past 18 years. She has co-edited three crossword puzzle books, contributed to digital puzzle books and has puzzles in internet apps like Puzzaz, Daily Pop and Redstone. She is a contributor to Gannett Publishing Services, a company with more than 104 media markets. In 2007, Bonnie taught a cruise class on crossword puzzle design for Celebrity Cruises. Her pseudonym for the completed puzzle was Mae Donna Cruz (read that out loud). Bonnie has some goals in mind for next year involving her crossword puzzles – she wants to find the time to reconnect with her “roots” in daily national newspapers like The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and the LA Times. She is excited about expanding her presence with giant puzzles that help to drive readership to print media. Every once in a while we are lucky to find something that we like to do and that we can do well. People like Bonnie appear to be able to do many things well. Corte Bella is full of talented people and Bonnie L. Gentry certainly belongs right at the top of that list. Maybe she will do a puzzle for the Corte Bella Times in the future? Let’s all ask for that.

Germany and Its Wines in December Deborah Damery Lazear, CSW Germany for the holidays? Gingerbread Anyone? Germany’s vineyards lie as far north as Newfoundland (pop quiz: Where is Newfoundland?) with the best situated on south-facing slopes to catch the light and warmth from the sun’s reflection off the rivers. Low in alcohol, these wines reverberate with precision and finesse. There is a fine line between acidity and fruit. Red wine, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) accounts for 25% of production of the sixty or more grapes grown. Riesling is the most prestigious and is not blended. Other important white grapes are MüllerThurgau, Scheurebe (SHOY-Ray-Beh) , Gewürztramiminer, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), and Rulander (Pinot Gris). Reading German wine labels: •

• • • •

Look for QbA (Good Regional Wine) or QmP (Higher Level of Quality Wine) on the label for a measure of quality. Kabinett indicates dry wine. Spatlëse is made from fully ripe grapes with a touch of sweetness and high acidity. Auslëse is very ripe grapes with higher level of sweetness, harvested only in best years. Beerenauslëse are individual berries picked by hand and affected by Botrytis (beneficial mold), offering a honey richness. Trockenbeerenauslëse (TbA) berries are allowed to dry on the vine (not frozen), Botrytis affected, and are hand-picked to produce rich, dessert wines. Eiswein are frozen grapes picked by hand by workers wearing gloves so not to warm the grapes.

Why does Riesling get the sweet wine bad reputation? During World War II, sugar was rationed which created a craving for sweetness with the American GIs stationed there. They brought that taste back with them, which carried on with Blue Nun for example. Today, German Riesling has returned to its glory with over 2/3 of production having little or no residual sugar. Riesling is recognized as one of the “go-to” wines for food pairing due to its acidity and crisp profile.

Other terms that are useful to know: Trocken = very dry wine Halbtrocken = half dry or slightly sweet Sekt = sparkling wine made in the Champagne method

Wine Areas: Mosel-Saar-Ruwer: Soil is slate. Rocks that slide down the hillside are carried back up by hand in buckets as a precious commodity. Riesling has slate, minerals, and wet-stone flavors distinctive of this area only. Wine is lean, racy, and refreshing.

The Rheingau: Riesling is rich, round, earthy, firm, acidic and a pure expression of fruit. Kabinett (dry) wines have elegance, transparency, balance, and profound fruit. Hock is the British name for Rhine wines and there are special Hock glasses. The Pfalz: Grapes are Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Weisburgunder, Rulander, Scheurebe, and Spatburguder. With a sunny and dry climate, ripeness is rarely a problem. Wines are fruity, rich, and expansive with vanilla, tangerine, and crème brulée on the tongue. These wines pair with every holiday food on the buffet. Don’t overlook the cheese trayKabinett and Spatlëse perfection! Holiday desserts adore a Riesling Beerenauslëse, following the rule that the wine should be sweeter than the dessert.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

What Happened in Corte Bella For Pam Lawrence (compiled by Linda Wright)

Wine and Dine Dinner with Oppolo Wines October 18

The Anacapa dining room was the scene of this most excellent evening of fine dining paired with the delicious wine from Oppolo Vineyards of Paso Robles, California. From beginning amuse bouche to the final dessert dish, this was an evening to remember.

CB Vets Club Gala October 23

The CB Vets Club hosted a very successful fund raising event and provided an excellent opportunity for Corte Bella residents to contribute to the good work of this Corte Bella organization.

Corte Bella Annual Fall Marketplace October 31

This annual event had two food trucks, fresh vegetables, and every other kind of small business vendor imaginable in attendance. Corte Bella responded to this in a big way, and the event was highly successful for both shoppers and vendors.

Cooking with Chef Dan October 29

The sold-out cooking class enjoyed Executive Chef Dan Haywood at his best, entertaining us at a cooking demonstration. Class participants couldn’t know at this time that our long-serving chef would be moving on from Corte Bella to another opportunity. Each dish our chef prepared for this class was delicious. Thank you, Chef Dan, for all the memories.

Day Trip to Los Algodones November 4

Corte Bellans boarded a bus and headed to the Mexican border on this excursion to shop and dine in Los Algodones, Mexico. A good time was had by all both on the bus and on the ground in Mexico!

Anacapa Haunted Happy Hour October 29

The specially crafted cocktails and the wonderful costumes worn by so many clever Corte Bella residents made this Happy Hour a wonderful event. The great Fall weather had the Anacapa patio overflowing with all kinds of characters from Batman to the Evil Queen from Snow White.

Corte Bella’s Annual Veterans Day Dinner Dance November 11

To honor all those who have served in our country’s military, Corte Bella turned out to participate in a salute to all branches of service. An impressive ceremony by members of the CB Vets ensured that our community acknowledged the service and sacrifice of many of our residents. Dinner and dancing were part of the event. Corte Bella knows this is an important holiday.

Your Corte Bella Garden In December Deborah “Ladybug” Lazear • •

Not too late to plant pansies. Hose aphids off roses.

Special Notes for Mexican Fan Palms

These will produce 5-6 new fronds per year and will grow 1-2 feet per year. (Information source: www.Paradisepalms.com (101 and Cave Creek); www.amwua.org/plants; aridzonetrees. com; davesgarden.com.)

• Use soil probe to check in-between watering. Go 12” deep before hard soil hit.

• New trees: Wait one month after planting for first “feeding.”

• Fertilize: 6 times a year avoiding extreme heat months (June, July, August, September) or extreme cold months (December, January). Use 2 cups of 10-5-10 granuals per each 1” trunk diameter, except for new trees (1/2 cup per tree for first two years). Other web sites say Valentine’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day • Citrus and palm watering needs are similar.

• Palm roots don’t go deep; they have small weak roots. • Palms tolerate watering extremes.

• Water deeply (1 hour) every 7-10 days for established palms. Clay soil needs less watering (10-14 days). For a 45 gallon box = 45 gallons water each time. • Extra watering needed when windy.

• •

Plant kohlrabi, lettuce, onion seedlings.

Sow seeds chives, collard greens, fennel, green onions, beets, parsnips.

• January, February, and March: Fertilize palms (1st OF 6) with ½ cup 10-5-10 (Summer Winds) or 16-8-4 (Moon Valley) Water. • April: 4 emitters @ 4 gallons (use adjustable type; each “bump” is ½ gal. per hour) = 16 gallons per watering. Skip 3. Move emitters to drip line, Fertilize with 1/2 cup (2nd of 6 total). • May: Prune fronds at 9:00 & 3:00. Trim brown tips with scissors. Fertilize 1/2 cup (3rd OF 6).

• June: Change to summer watering. 4 emitters @ 6 gallons per hour = 24 gallons. Do Not Fertilize! • July: Do Not Fertilize!

• August: Do Not Fertilize!

• September: Fertilize palms 1/2 cup (4th OF 6). Change to fall watering 12 – 16 gallons (Moon Valley). • October: Fertilize with ½ cup (5th OF 6).

• November: Last fertilizing until March with ½ cup (6th OF 6). • December: Enjoy

the Holiday Season! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!

• Place emitters in an “X” pattern around the trunk. Move them to drip line at 3 feet from trunk.

What Happened in Corte Bella continued Jason Love Comedy Show

Verde Canyon Train Ride

It was a packed house with more than 200 Corte Bella residents to view three very funny (and clean) comedians at our favorite comedy show. Everyone laughed and had a wonderful time. What a great way to spend a Friday night in our slice of paradise.

A bus load of 51 Corte Bella residents traveled to historic Clarksdale to ride the Verde Canyon Train. For many, this was their first time on this annual Corte Bella day trip. The picture-perfect weather had almost everyone out on the open-air car enjoying the views of the river, the fall colors and the amazing red rock formations along the valley, known as the other Grand Canyon.
