cattle baron’s ball Giving Cancer The Boot ✯
The 39th Annual Cattle Baron’s Ball will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Southfork Ranch. Country superstar and judge on NBC’s new hit show “The Voice,” Blake Shelton, will be the headline entertainer at the Ball. Emerald City will start the evening’s festivities by performing on the Live Auction Stage and will then round out the evening with dance music at the Late Night Party. VIP guests will enjoy a private, pre-gala performance by Mark Chesnutt. In addition to the celebrity entertainment, events of the evening will include an elaborate cocktail buffet, silent and live auctions, a raffle and dancing. This ball is the world’s largest single-night fundraiser for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. In 39 years of events, they have raised nearly $48 million towards the ongoing pursuit of a cure for cancer. One hundred active volunteers are responsible for raising the funds that have already made a difference in preventing and treating cancer in the lives of friends, family and neighbors. The raffle is no ordinary raffle. It’s your chance to win extra fabulous prizes – like a brand new car! Buying raffle tickets is a great way to support their cause and the American Cancer Society if you aren’t attending the Ball – anyone can win! Country music’s most revered performers have entertained at the ball, including Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Big and Rich, Waylon Jennings and Sugarland. Given the time of the year and outdoor location, the guests often have dealt with inclement weather and muddy roads. Therefore there are always prayers going up for clear skies. -- Sally Blanton ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

The Last Days of Disco is the fun theme for this benefit for the vision and reading impaired. The attire is Disco threads and boogie shoes says Chair Julie Machal. The mission of Reading & Radio Resource is to enrich the lives of children and adults who because of physical, learning or vision limitations cannot read for themselves. Reading & Radio Resource operates with a staff of six full-time employees and the talents of more than 270 volunteers who collectively donate more than 17,000 hours each year to benefit their clients. There are more than a million people who are blind in the US, and more than 25 million Americans are reading impaired. In addition, more than 20 % of students in the US have a reading disability, with a large population of students in the US that are learning English as a second language. As baby boomers continue to age, adults with vision impairments are expected to double. Also, many military service men and women are returning from war zones with reading challenges due to vision and physical impairments. The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) held its 2012 national convention at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas from June 30 to July 5. North Texas Radio for the Blind and Austin Information Radio took recordings of all six of the General Sessions and distilled them down to the material that would matter most to radio listeners. Frozen Planet
Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center ✯
On August 31 and September 1, 2012 at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, celebrated film composer George Fenton returns to Dallas to conduct the newest of his documentary concerts, Frozen Planet in Concert, live with the DSO. Featuring stunning music and film imagery, the concert combines live orchestral music by the DSO with spectacular HD images of the frozen wilderness and extraordinary creatures of Earth’s polar regions as from the landmark BBC/Discovery Channel television series, Frozen Planet. “It was a dizzying immersion into a glorious twist-up of nature, cinematography and music,” writes Mary McNamara of The Los Angeles Times. “The audience was free to experience the film as pure visual and audio art, to hear how the airy arc of melody swooped with as much wild grandeur as the swirling ice of the Arctic.” Best known for his work in film and television, George Fenton is one of the UK’s most successful composers, writing scores for over 100 films and collaborating with some of the most influential filmmakers. In 1990 he composed the score for the BBC Natural History series, Trials of Life, his first collaboration with Alastair Fothergill and the start of a creative relationship that has spanned over 20 years culminating in the Earth Trilogy: The Blue Planet, Planet Earth and Frozen Planet. Alongside his work in natural history Fenton has continued to compose for theatre and film. Recent projects include the soundtrack for Ken Loach’s latest film The Angels’ Share which won the Jury Prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and the music for John Hodge’s acclaimed new play The Collaborators which premiered at the National Theatre, London last year. Gexa Energy Pavilion ✯
Toby Keith’s Live in Overdrive Tour stops at the Gexa Energy Pavilion, along with special guest Brantley Gilbert. Clancy’s Tavern, Toby Keith’s 16th studio album, was released in 2011 and the hit single “Made in America” rose to number one on the country music charts. Clancy’s Tavern draws its name from the title track, which Keith wrote about his grandmother’s bar in Fort Smith, Arkansas. The title track of Clancy’s Tavern is almost a prequel to Toby’s 2005 hit “Honkytonk U.” “It’s the same grandmother,” he explains. “’Honkytonk U’ talked about my mother putting me on a Greyhound and sending me to live with my grandmother for the summer, and how things took off from there. This one is more about the bar and what I saw there. The actual name of the place was Billy Garner’s Supper Club, but her husband teased her and nicknamed her Clancy because she ran a tavern. Every line in the song is true. This isn’t fiction.” Toby Keith is ranked among the top selling artists in all-genres at #3 on Billboard’s Top 200 Artists of the Decade. He was also named Billboard’s #1 Country Artist of the Decade and #1 Country Songwriter of the Decade, and was honored by Nashville Songwriters Assn. He is a three-time BMI Country Artist/ Songwriter of the Year with his catalog generating more than 65 million performances. In 2009, his 14th studio album, American Ride, debuted at the top of the Country Albums chart. The title track and the second single from the album, “Cryin’ For Me (Wayman’s Song),” landed Keith two more consecutive No. 1 singles, the 27th and 28th chart toppers of his career. In the past decade alone, his singles have spent more than a year at No. 1 on the charts. His tours continue to be among the top-drawing concerts in the world of entertainment. Adam Young’s electronica musical project, Owl City, returns to Dallas for one night only at the House of Blues. This Latest tour is in support of his most recent album The Midsummer Station. While making The Midsummer Station, Young’s third album as Owl City, the Minnesota native said, ”Over the past several years become fascinated with trying to capture magic in a jar through simple, concise pop songs,” he says. “I saw it as a great challenge to try to come up with catchy, unique, and memorable songs because it was a new method of songwriting never approached before. I believe artists should never look back or repeat themselves and this was a new frontier for me.” Young adds that the album retains his synthdriven melodic pop sensibility. Songs like “Shooting Star,” “Dreams and Disasters,” and “I’m Coming After You” are filled with dance beats that will appeal to fans of house, trance and dub-step. “I grew up listening to dance music and always wanted to make a dance record,” he says. On the album’s first single, “Good Time,” Young is joined in a duet by “Call Me Maybe” star Carly Rae Jepsen. Young being a fan, reached out to her about collaborating on a song upon learning that she was also a fan of his. This mutual admiration work together can be heard on “Good Time” - an undeniable summer anthem. “Good Time” was written by Matt Thiessen (Relient K), Brian Lee and Young. Young began his musical career by creating melodies and beats on his laptop as a way to combat insomnia and eventually an EP, 2007’s Of June and an album, 2008’s Maybe I’m Dreaming, both of which reached the Top 20 on the Electronic Albums chart. On The Silk Road
Ceramics, Culture and Commerce ✯
On the Silk Road and the High Seas: Chinese Ceramics, Culture and Commerce examines why Chinese ceramics were such prized commodities, both at home and abroad. Examples of various proto-porcelain appeared in China about 3,000 years ago and hard-paste porcelain began to be created around 1,800 years ago. This precious product was sometimes called “white gold,” especially in the West. Foreign trade and changing domestic markets played a role in stimulating Chinese potters to continually reinvent their repertoire of shapes and decorative techniques. These exchanges also illuminate important episodes in cultural history. Throughout history, the exchange of goods and ideas was never one-sided. Novel ideas from the West fascinated the emperors of the Qing dynasty (1644– 1911) inspiring the creation of imperial wares, such as the pattern known in the West as mille-fleur and in China as wanhuajin. Jesuits working in Chinese imperial workshops were a conduit for European imagery and thoughts, such as the unique mille-fleur design often depicted in easily transportable 18thcentury European engravings. Omer Fast
5,000 Feet is Best ✯
Omer Fast: 5000 Feet Is the Best, was originally shown at the 2011 Venice Biennale, and this is the first time the work has been on view at the DMA since entering the collection in 2011. 5000 Feet Is the Best, a thirty-minute video, takes its name from an excerpt of an interview between Fast and a Predator Drone aerial vehicle operator now working in Las Vegas as a casino security guard. Born in Jerusalem and based in Berlin, Fast is among the most compelling and sophisticated video artists of his generation. He works with film, video, and television footage to examine how individuals and histories interact with each other in narrative. Fast mixes sound and image into stories that include personal and media accounts of current events and history. 5000 Feet Is the Best is based on two meetings, which were recorded in a hotel in Las Vegas in September 2010, where the drone operator shared the technical aspects of his job with Fast as well as the psychological difficulties he has experienced as a result of incidents in which the unmanned plane fired at both militants and civilians. This fictional and factual retelling of this veteran’s story explores the shifting divisions between reality and representation, and truth and memory. Fast’s articulation of the intersection of video game culture, slick Hollywood narrative, government concealment, and the privatization of warfare provides an elliptical and haunting account of its cost, while refusing to moralize or judge. The video will also be on view during Dallas VideoFest 25, September 27–30, which will be held at the Dallas Museum of Art. The Kingdom of Loango ✯
The Kingdom of Loango was a pre-colonial African state from approximately the 15th to the 19th century in what is now the Republic of Congo. Elaborately carved ivory tusks were made as souvenirs of life on the continent’s Atlantic Coast. Ivories that were commissioned by the Portuguese during the 15th to 16th century were sold only in Europe. The patrons who commissioned Loango souvenir tusks came from many countries, including Brazil, India, and America. This will be Ridley’s first solo exhibition at PDNB, and will feature his large format photographs of Texas’ beloved Big Bend National Park. Ridley has been photographing Big Bend’s 800,000-acre breath-taking landscape for over twenty-five years. At least twice a year, Ridley ventures to Big Bend capturing stunning, expansive black and white images of the Rio Grande River, including the Chisos Mountain range, Dog Canyon, Emory Peak, Pine Canyon, Cattail Falls, and Punta de la Sierra. He prefers the “nuances of texture and tone” that black and white photography lends. Ridley states, “The absence of color demands that the qualities of illumination and tone produce the emotional response instead of a response to color alone.” Jack Ridley’s choice of the 8 x 10 camera follows the tradition of the 19th Century photographers who documented the American West, including Carlton Watkins, Timothy O’Sullivan, and Eadweard Muybridge. They carried large, cumbersome view cameras, glass plates and equipment on horsedrawn wagons, developing their work on location. Due to modern technology, Ridley’s expeditions of Big Bend are not quite as challenging. His choice of camera confirms his demand for the same quality of the 19th Century masters before him. Ridley’s photographs address Big Bend’s sublime grandeur. Other great vistas exist in National Parks throughout the west, but this is one of Texas’ most treasured attractions. Ridley was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1948, but spent his earliest years in California where he developed an appreciation of landscapes. He currently lives and works in Dallas. Jessica Drenk’s solo exhibition begins on September 8, with an opening reception from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Galleri Urbane Dallas. Drenk was raised in Montana, where she developed an appreciation for the natural world that remains an important inspiration to her artwork today. Tactile and textural, her sculptures highlight the chaos and beauty that can be found in simple materials. Drenk’s work is also influenced by systems of information and the impulse to develop an encyclopedic understanding of the world. In 2006, Drenk was awarded the International Sculpture Center’s Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. Her work has been pictured in Sculpture Magazine and seen in shows at the International Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey, the Albuquerque Museum, the Tucson Museum of Art, the International Book Fair of Contemporary Creative Books in Marseilles, France, as well as galleries across the United States. In 2009, Drenk received an Artist Project Grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, funding the installation of Archaeologica: A Museum of the Disposable at the Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona. Van Lamsweerde & Matadin Pretty Much Everything ✯
For more than two decades, the meticulous and audacious imagery created by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin has challenged and inspired the field of fashion photography. In celebrating more than 25 years in the industry, the Dutch couple has created an exhibition comprised of more than 300 works. They are regular contributors to Vogue Paris, Purple Magazine, W Magazine and V Magazine among many others and have created iconic advertising campaigns for leading fashion and fragrance brands including: Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Gucci, Chloe, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Chanel, Robeto Cavalli and Viktor & Rolf Parfum. van Lamsweerde and Matadin’s career in art is equally prolific. Their work has graced the walls and pages of some of the world’s finest galleries and fashion magazines, and if it is surprising that their photographs easily float between these worlds, it is by virtue of their ease in creating imagery that seeks homes in both culturally elite and mainstream outlets. For some of their photographs, van Lamsweerde and Matadin have worked in collaboration with art directors to look back at “pretty much everything” that the photographers have been working on for over two decades and has brought them to the forefront of art and fashion. Cabaret
A Repertory Company Theatre ✯
Cabaret is the award-winning musical based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. This legendary landmark musical turns Weimar Berlin of 1931 into a dark haven of self-indulgence where its extraordinary inhabitants are determined to keep up appearances as the real world-outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret- prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. The Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. A subplot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show. With its show-stopping choreography, dazzling costumes, and some of the most memorable songs in musical theatre history, including “Mein Herr,” “Maybe This Time,” and, of course, “Cabaret,” All of the play’s musical numbers are staged within the confines of the Kit Kat Klub, and each song comments on the plot and on Germany’s “progression” from hedonism to Hitlerism. Repertory Company Theatre was founded in 1986 by Debra Carter, Sharon Lipshie and Kitty Beletic to create a local theatre with a resident acting Company as well as a strong focus on Theatre Arts Education for youth. Each season the theatre presents Broadway musicals, classic plays and apecial presentations performed by their acclaimed REP Company (55 member troupe). war horse
Tourning Broadway Musical ✯
‘War Horse’, the Tony Award-winning and compelling drama whose film adaptation also earned an Academy Award nod, comes to Dallas for a two-week run at the Winspear Opera House of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. ‘War Horse’ is a powerful and moving play set in England at the time of World War I. With the help of lifesize, lifelike, strong and sturdy horse puppets that can carry a rider, all of which were crafted by the Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa, the production is able to tell the touching story between Albert and his beloved horse Joey, who were separated when Joey is sold to the cavalry as a pawn for war. Despite the restrictions of age and the real perils and threats that await him, young Albert goes on a dangerous mission amidst the devastating and depressing aftermath of war to find his horse and bring him home, who ends up in a deserted land after having seen the bloody action first-hand. “We are thrilled to be able present War Horse on its first national tour,” said Doug Curtis, interim CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. “This show has generated more excitement and discussion than any I can recall in a long time. War Horse represents the kind of artistic productions we are committed to bringing to our audiences both now and in the future.” The performance running time is 2 hours and 40 minutes with 1 intermission. An Evening At The Eisemann Center ✯
Two legendary Broadway stars. A once-in-a-lifetime event. An Evening with Mandy Patinkin and Patti LuPone reunites these Tony Award-winning virtuosos (and lifelong friends) for the first time since Evita. Much more than a concert, this is a unique musical love story told entirely through a masterful selection of the greatest songs ever written for the stage. Funny, passionate, intimate and utterly unforgettable, this is An Evening no fan of musical theater can afford to miss. On the genesis of An Evening, LuPone previously told Playbill.com, “There was a presenter in Richardson, Texas - they were opening a brandnew performing arts center - who called my agent at ICM Artists and said, ‘I got Mandy, how about Patti?’ and then called Mandy’s agent and said, ‘I have Patti, how about Mandy?’ And he put us together after 25 years. So I got a call from Mandy, who said, ‘I don’t want to just do, you sing a song and I sing a song, and then we do a duet.’ I was doing Noises Off at the time, and I said, ‘Mandy I can’t partake in the development of this.’ He said, ‘I’ll do it. I want to do it.’ I said, ‘Great, do it.’ And we did it, and then we didn’t do it for five years. And then all of a sudden it happened again. I guess the idea of Mandy and me being onstage together again is generating enough excitement that we’re getting booked all over the place.” An Evening with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin is accompanied on piano by Paul Ford. The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One – a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called “Judges” who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (played by Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge – a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of “Slo-Mo” experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed. During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (played by Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture – a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (played by Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan’s inner circle, MaMa overtakes the compound’s control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival. The endlessly inventive mind of screenwriter Alex Garland (28 Days Later, The Beach) and director Pete Travis (Vantage Point, Endgame) bring Dredd to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film. Filmed in 3D with stunning slow motion photography sequences, the film returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip. EVENTS
Dallas City Performance hall Grand Opening ✯
On September 13-16, the city will celebrate the grand opening of the longawaited Dallas City Performance Hall – a performing arts venue first conceived in the 1990s as part of the master planning for the eastern end of the Dallas Arts District. This event will kick off with four days of free and ticketed events, ranging from national to local, big and small productions, all designed to demonstrate the broad spectrum of performing arts the Hall is capable of showcasing. “Dallas City Performance Hall was designed to bring Dallas’ rich, shared culture to life,” said Maria Munoz-Blanco, director of City of Dallas’ Office of Cultural Affairs. “It provides a platform for the discovery of arts, not just by citizens, but for our city’s emerging to mid-sized arts groups as well.” Dallas City Performance Hall is a citymanaged performance theater opening Phase I in the Dallas Arts District this month. The $40.5 million project was funded by the 2006 city bond election. The Hall is designed to provide a performing arts home in the Dallas Arts District for the city’s emerging and midsize arts and culture organizations. Addison Oktoberfest Willkommen Y’all ✯
One of the largest and most authentic Oktoberfest celebrations is back at Addison Circle Park. Nearly 70,000 people will gather for the annual tribute to polka music, German food and Spaten and Franziskaner Bier in Addison Circle Park. For 25 years, Addison has celebrated alongside Munich with a festival featuring four days of music, folk dancing, sing-a-longs plus great German food and entertainment -- at one of the largest and most authentic Oktoberfest festivals in the world. “People often ask why our Oktoberfest is in September,” says Barbara Kovacevich, Director of Special Events for the Town of Addison. “We schedule Addison Oktoberfest to coincide with the opening of the world renowned Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, and we work to make it as authentic as possible.” This year the famed German polka band, the Munich Evergreens will headline along with Grammy-award winning legends Brave Combo and dozens of authentic German entertainers at the festival, which draws guests from across the Southwest. There will be fun contests such as dachshund races, bier barrel bowling, a German Idol yodeling contest, a German spelling bee and much more! If you are looking a more intimate experience, you can register to dine at the Brau Haus, with full service Bavarian dining and an exclusive menu. Seatings for the $45 package are available Thursday through Saturday. You can also enjoy the Teutonic tradition of kuchen and kaffee at the Oktoberfest’s new bakery! Many of Addison’s hotels are offering “Oktoberfest Packages” for those wanting to celebrate for the whole weekend. Packages include lodging, event tickets and an anniversary commemorative stein and Oktoberfest hat pin. Addison’s Oktoberfest has been named one of the country’s most authentic by USA Today and Forbes Magazine. State Fair of Texas Big & Bright ✯
The State Fair of Texas is back and this time it’s “Big and Bright.” Beginning Sept. 28 and running through Oct. 21, 2012 will mark the 126th exposition for the State Fair, and is set to amp up with high wattage attractions. Leading the way will be a Chinese Lantern Festival featuring illuminated and animated displays as large as 50 feet high and 300 feet long. Crowd favorites such as the Starlight Parade, Illumination Sensation and Midway Lights will also light up the evening sky surrounding Fair Park. Other popular exhibits include the 2013 State Fair of Texas Auto Show and a chance to see the latest in motor trends. The Chevrolet Main Stage will once again pull back the curtain to feature top entertainers every weekend plus live bands throughout the week; all concerts are free to fairgoers. Of course, Fair folks follow football and fans will have all eyes glued to the Cotton Bowl when Prairie View A&M meets Grambling State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game on Saturday, Oct. 6. Following – just a week later on Saturday, Oct. 13 – is the annual contest between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma. Food, food and food, fun, fabulous and fried, the latest Big Tex Choice Award winning entries will have to be tried. Since its inception in 2005, the Labor Day contest has captured the attention of Fair concessionaires eager to amaze visitors with the latest fried culinary classics. Past contest winners include Fried Bubblegum and Deep Fried Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack. Only time will tell if this year’s Grand Champion Steer is another record seller, topping last year’s sale price of $102,000 at the Youth Auction of Champions. The Addams Family will be this year’s State Fair Musical. Performances will be offered daily Oct. 2 through 21 in the Music Hall at Fair Park.
