Chaired by Robin Bagwell and Jan Osborn, this much-anticipated event helps to raise awareness about the problem of eating disorders and provides funds to support the programs and services provided by The Elisa Project, which touched the lives of more than 30,000 people in 2011. The speaker for the luncheon is noted author and educator Brad Lamm, best known for helping people make life-enhancing changes on The Dr. OZ Show. In long-term recovery from crystal meth, drug and alcohol addiction, Brad has struggled with binge eating and bulimia as well. According to Brad, “My family foundation was a mom struggling with … bulimia for four decades. I fell fast and hard into my own eating disorder while in college. Finally breaking free from it led to healing and wholeness.” Brad believes that human beings are constantly changing and remarkably resilient – no matter how broken or discouraged they may feel. Brad is Founder and CEO of Change Institute & Intervention Specialists, a crisis intervention group. For those with serious addiction problems, including compulsive overeating and obesity, Brad has found that a circle of family and friends is uniquely poised to offer support, accountability and structure from a beginning point of love and honesty. Texas in the Twenties

Prints, Drawings, and Photographs ✯

To complement the exhibition Youth and Beauty: Art of the American Twenties, the DMA presents Texas in the Twenties, an exhibition featuring images of Texas during the 1920s made by Texas artists. Gathering drawings, etchings, prints, and photographs loaned by local collections, the exhibition highlights scenes of Texas as well as the transitional time in Dallas history when it was on the verge of becoming one of our nation’s largest and most vibrant cities. Showcasing approximately thirty works by L. O. Griffith, Mary Anita Bonner, and Eugene Omar Goldbeck, the exhibition will be on view through July 1, 2012. Indiana native Louis Oscar (L. O.) Griffith moved to Dallas with his family as a child and studied art in St. Louis and Chicago in the early 1890s. In 1926 he executed a suite of nine drawings with corresponding etchings, which are featured in this exhibition, recording Dallas in the years leading up to the Great Depression. The award-winning Texas artist Mary Anita Bonner (1887–1935) grew up in San Antonio, where she observed ranch hands and cowboys who inspired many of her works. In the early 1920s, she studied lithography and printmaking before she moved to Paris, France, in 1922 to train with French artist Édouard Henri Léon. While in Paris, she was praised for her Texasthemed prints depicting a cowboy’s working life, including Circular Cowboy and Les Cowboys, and was awarded the Ordre des Palmes Acadèmiques in 1924. Eugene Omar Goldbeck was born in San Antonio in 1892 and became a photographer at a very early age. His photography captures sweeping views of cities, events, and Texas landscapes. Goldbeck is known for his panoramic photography, and Texas in the Twenties presents four of his photos, including Third Annual Bathing Girl Revue, Galveston, Texas. Elliott Hundley The Bacchae ✯

The first touring exhibition of the distinctive “bulletin board” collages and sculptures of Elliott Hundley is the debut exhibition of the new year for The Nasher Sculpture Center. Over the past decade, Hundley has developed a multifaceted, intricate art using paint, photographs, and organic and found materials ranging from bamboo, goat hooves, and pine cones to pins, magnifying lenses, and gold leaf. The mythic world of ancient Greek tragedy becomes vividly contemporary as Hundley reimagines Euripides’s last play, The Bacchae, in twelve works presented in one of the Nasher’s street-level galleries. The Bacchae is a tale of familial betrayal and divine revenge set in the ancient city of Thebes. The god Dionysus (Bacchus to the Romans) has decided to punish its citizens when they refuse to accept his claim that he is the son of Zeus. After bringing the women of Thebes under his influence, Dionysus leads them out of the city and into the wilderness where they join his followers, the Bacchae, in worshipping him in ecstatic rituals. The god then convinces the king of Thebes, Pentheus, to spy on the women, who, upon discovering him, mistake him for a wild beast. Led by Pentheus’s own mother, the women rip the king limb from limb. When Dionysus’s influence on her finally loosens, she discovers that she has murdered her own son. Mining the sentimental qualities of his eclectic materials, Elliott Hundley collages create condensed dreamscapes, entwining the personal and symbolic into friable mythologies. Born in 1975, Hundley lives and works in Los Angeles. The exhibition runs through April 22. Word Spirit

Calligraphy, Paintings and Photographs ✯

In Japanese martial arts, belief in kotodama gives rise to the kiai, or “battle cry,” in aikido; language power is called upon to harmonize mind and body to the task at hand. This alignment of force and technique is also referred to as a “spirit meeting.” Chaco Terada learned calligraphy sitting next to her father, a distinguished Japanese calligrapher. He did not teach her with words but in silence. He instructed her to watch his gestures, to sense speed and hesitation, to feel pressure on the paper or the lift of the brush, and to follow the forms with her own tama, or “qi,” flowing into the brush. He taught her the art of calligraphy by movement of spirit, by issuing the sound of spirit in action. Terada’s own calligraphy, represented in the exhibition by Exercise I, is accomplished and spirited, and it remains her understanding of art, although her media have assumed new roles. Wanting to explore possibilities of ink, paper, and silk, she moved from calligraphy to couching ink-strokes between layers of silk and paper, revealing the gesture through translucent materials—like thoughts recalled from memory, feelings tinted in another place of awareness. In another group of works on view, she focuses on the character itself, feeling its interaction with space, its flight into being, its lifespan as gesture as limited and unique, a lifespan like our own. One group of photographs follows the trajectory of words written on tightly folded paper as the tension of the folds is released and the paper springs to life to permeate space in dizzying spirals and wacky conversations. William Powhida Seditions ✯

This exhibition of work by Brooklyn artist William Powhida features a combination of original and editioned pieces in the artist’s well-known trompe l’oeil style. Powhida uses a combination of graphite, gouache and colored pencil on panel or paper to create these illusionary images. For several years, Powhida worked as an art critic for The Brooklyn Rail, a non-profit art journal, while developing his own artistic practice. Powhida’s work, reflecting his critical background, concentrates on the politics of access and the powers that control the assignment of value in the contemporary art world. All roles are fair game from hot young artists and the market-setting collectors that buy them, to the branded dealers that sell the work and the critics paid to provide intellectual justification for price points. To soften what might appear a direct editorial voice, Powhida projects his commentary through the lens of an alter-ego, one with whom he shares a name (William Powhida). This alter-ego closely resembles any number of young art stars, though Powhida’s character happens to exhibit all of the worst traits imaginable in any coddled ‘genius’. The fictional Powhida expresses himself by documenting his manifold frustrations, frequently in lists, which Powhida the artist channels into his legendary drawings. William Powhida (born in 1976) who lives and works in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, earned his Bachelor of Fine Art in painting from Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York and his Master of Fine Art in painting from Hunter College in New York, New York. Powhida has exhibited solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally with galleries such as Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles, Platform Gallery in Seattle and Marlborough Chelsea in New York. Rusiloski, Menza, Drennan ✯

This is a trio exhibition of new paintings by Winter Rusiloski, Carmen Menza and Cathy Drennan. Winter Rusiloski’s early influences of the Pennsylvania landscape, and her current inspiration with the Texas horizon and big sky, have led her to a fusion of landscape painting and abstraction, creating a dynamic spatial relationship. Rusiloski actively shows her work in both solo and group exhibitions and has won awards including the Hunting Art Prize Exhibition finalist twice and the Texas Oklahoma Art Prize in 2010. With an emphasis on gestural abstraction, Carmen Menza’s original works of art capture life’s fleeting moments in bold, rich colors and texture. Carmen shows her work in group and solo exhibitions and her pieces are held in private collections throughout North America. Cathy Drennan, continuing her long interest in the world of cultural symbology, is focusing her new work on specific symbols and their broader meaning. She appropriates known symbols then deconstructs and simplifies the form to offer her own visual statement through color, pattern, texture and repetition. the Lighthouse The Dallas Opera ✯

There is a crisp, nononsense preamble to 1980’s chamber masterpiece The Lighthouse, from Peter Maxwell Davies. The preamble states this work “is based on the incident as described by Craig Mair in his book on the family of Stevenson, lighthouse engineers, of Edinburgh, concerning the disappearance of the three lighthouse keepers from the Flannan Isles Lighthouse, in unexplained circumstances, in 1900.” While appearing to tell us quite a lot, in fact, this tells us little about what we can expect, over the course of this powerful and thought-provoking work. An additional note from the composer explains that the musical structure of this piece is based on the Tower of Tarot. Number symbolism is present in the music throughout, and (as Davies put it), it “erupts” onto the surface, in the form of words sung by Arthur during the card game. The Lighthouse stars Andrew Bidlack in his Dallas Opera debut, Robert Orth and Daniel Sumegi. Set design is by Beowulf Boritt in his Dallas Opera debut. The plot of this chamber opera serves up both supernatural and psychological explanations, in equal measure, as Davies’ intense, atmospheric and haunting music carries the audience to another world! Conducted by Nicole Paiement and staged by Dallas Theater Center Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty in his opera debut, performances of The Lighthouse are sung in English and are approximately 72 minutes with no intermissions. Million Dollar Quartet Dallas Summer Musicals ✯

This is a new smash Broadway musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. The man who made it happen was Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” who discovered them all. The four legends-to-be united for the only time in their careers for an impromptu recording that has come to be known as one of the greatest rock jam sessions of all time. During the session Phillips spotted an opportunity for some publicity and called the local newspaper. The following day, an article written about the session was published in the Memphis Press-Scimitar under the title “Million Dollar Quartet”. This thrilling musical brings you inside the recording studio with four major talents who came together as a redhot rock ‘n’ roll band for one unforgettable night. footnote

Schlomo Bar-Abba / Lior Ashkenazi ✯

Footnote is the tale of a great rivalry between a father and son. Eliezer and Uriel Shkolnik are both eccentric professors, who have dedicated their lives to their work in Talmudic Studies. The father, Eliezer, is a stubborn purist who fears the establishment and has never been recognized for his work. Meanwhile his son, Uriel, is an up-and-coming star in the field, who appears to feed on accolades, endlessly seeking recognition. Then one day, the tables turn. When Eliezer learns that he is to be awarded the Israel Prize, the most valuable honor for scholarship in the country, his vanity and desperate need for validation are exposed. His son, Uriel, is thrilled to see his father’s achievements finally recognized but, in a darkly funny twist, is forced to choose between the advancement of his own career and his father’s. Will he sabotage his father’s glory? This is the story of insane academic competition, the dichotomy between admiration and envy for a role model, and the very complicated relationship between a father and son. Footnote was written and directed by Joseph Cedar (Time of Favor). When asked about his inspiration for Footnote, Cedar said, “It is difficult for me to answer that question without spoiling the film and giving away a key plot point, because the initial idea was exactly that – a plot point that I thought would be interesting to develop. It is remotely based on something that almost happened to me, and I enjoyed imagining how it would unfold if it did happen to me. The finished film, however, turned out to be much more complex than that initial idea. During the writing process the focus shifted from the plot to an examination of these two characters.” Director: Joseph Cedar Rated: PG Opens: March 9 ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

ST. patrick’s Day parade Largest in the Southwest ✯

What started in 1979 as a few disorganized vehicles making a trek through lower Greenville amidst traffic has now become the annual Greenville Avenue Saint Patrick’s Day parade and is lovingly referred to as “the Dallas Mardi Gras.” The parade actually began on lower Greenville Ave. and was a nice little community event for those first few years. Word got around about this little neighborhood spectacle and attendance began to grow. So much in fact that the residents in the adjacent neighborhoods felt that they were too close to the traditional St. Patrick’s Day revelry and they overwhelmingly spoke out to their area council person. In 1987 the Dallas City Council cancelled the event entirely. Later that year a group of like-minded business owners banded together to form the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association. The city council voiced concerns ranging from crowd control to littering. One stipulation from the city was that the parade was to be moved to the North, where the residential neighborhoods would not be disturbed and police would have better access the area’s businesses and residents during the parade. Negotiations continued for a couple of years and in1989 Greenville Ave. St. Patrick’s Parade was granted a permit from the City of Dallas. There were over 20,000 spectators that year, a green longhorn steer, three elephants with green toenails and the same councilperson who had so adamantly opposed the parade in previous years even served as a judge. In the years that followed, the parade has embedded itself deeply in Dallas folklore. Now, with more than a hundred floats and attendance close to one hundred thousand, this “little neighborhood” parade now rivals other top ten metropolitan areas. The parade typically begins between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. around Park Lane and Greenville Avenue. Friday activities continue with a new wine, food and music event, “Sips and Sounds” at the historic Kessler Theater in Dallas’ Bishop Arts District. A wine, beer, spirits, and food sampling featuring some hot chefs from Bishop Arts is followed by a concert from Texas music sensation Carrie Rodriguez. The dazzling “International Grand Tasting” takes place on Saturday March 31st, from 7 to 10 p.m., in the beautiful, new Irving Convention Center at Las Colinas. Featuring cuisine from over 60 of the area’s top chefs and more than 400 premium wines, spirits and imported beers. Connoisseurs will want to attend the limited attendance “Reserve Tasting”, preceding the International Grand Tasting, to sample the finest wines and spirits available. CSI Family Day Third Annual Event ✯

With crime scene investigation growing in popularity on television and in the video game world, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is expecting hundreds to attend CSI Family Day for the third straight year. On Sunday, March 18, from noon to 5 p.m. on the seventh floor, Museum visitors will have the chance to solve a hypothetical crime after examining a mock crime scene, receiving a police report about what happened and performing forensic analysis at evidence stations; such stations include analysis of blood, fingerprint, document, footwear, hair, fiber and eyewitness testimony. Members of the University of North Texas’ Forensic Science Club will be posted at each evidence station to help visitors draw conclusions about crime analysis and likely suspects. This year’s program will include a new “Ask the Expert” station, where a certified forensic document examiner from Denton-based Weldon & Associates will be available for questions about handwriting analysis and similar investigatory work. Participants can keep track of their collected data using an evidence collection guide provided for them. CSI Family Day offers a fun and engaging way to learn about modern investigative techniques and the reallife challenges to solving crime; it is suitable for children 8 years and older, their parents, and anyone interested in crime scene investigation and analysis. The first 500 children will have the chance to have their fingerprints taken free of charge for parent identification purposes. CSI Family Day is free with paid Museum admission: $13.50 for adults, $12.50 for youth (ages 6-18) and seniors (65+), free for five years and younger. Discounts are available for groups.
