Legacy of the Plumed Serpent Ancient Mexican Art ✯
The Legacy of the Plumed Serpent in Ancient Mexico is the first large-scale exploration of the ancient kingdoms of southern Mexico and their patron deity, Quetzalcoatl, an incarnation of the spirit force of wind and rain that combined the attributes of a serpent with those of the quetzal bird, thus the name “Plumed Serpent.” On view from July 29 through November 25, 2012, this groundbreaking exhibition features 150 objects—including painted codices, turquoise mosaics, gold, and textiles—loaned from museums and private collections in Mexico, Europe, and the United States. These rare artworks trace the development of an extensive trade network that resulted in a period of international entrepreneurship and innovation that spread across ancient Mexico, the American Southwest, and Central America during the Postclassic (AD 900–1521) and early colonial periods. The Legacy of the Plumed Serpent in Ancient Mexico focuses on an era of cultural innovation in Mesoamerica. Trade networks, closely linked to the deity Quetzalcoatl, fostered the exchange of both goods and ideas across vast distances. These southern Mexican kingdoms, which recognized Quetzalcoatl as their founder and patron, became, and continue to be, the Children of the Plumed Serpent. The Codex Zouche-Nuttall is one of a small number of known Mexican codices (illustrated screenfold manuscript books) dating to pre-Hispanic times, it is made of deer skin and comprises forty-seven leaves. One side of the document relates the history of important centers in the Mixtec region, while the other, starting at the opposite end, records the genealogy, marriages, and political and military feats of the Mixtec ruler Eight Deer Jaguar-Claw. Noble Change
Tantric Art of the High Himalaya ✯
This exhibition of sculptures and textiles is the first presentation drawn from a collection of tantric art recently acquired by Trammell S. Crow. It inaugurates a series of presentations and programs that will unfold over the coming years, exploring the rich tradition of tantric art made in the Himalayan regions to serve the practices that developed there as Vajrayana Buddhism (in Sanskrit Vajra means “indestructible” and yana means “vehicle” or “path”). The time is ripe. We are two centuries removed from the early Western fascination with or total rejection of tantra as titillating erotica or stultifying ritual, and more than fifty years removed from the crescendo of the hippie exploitation of tantra to pursue sexual pleasure and free-wheeling states of consciousness, like those offered by mind-altering drugs. In our time, we have a highly visible example of Vajrayana Buddhism in action in Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who is accomplished in the most advanced and subtle practices of tantric Buddhism. Followers consider him to be warm, precise, unshakable, generous, courageous, and firmly grounded in reality—its suffering and its nobility. He offers an invitation to come down to earth. Tantric practices were first designated as distinct from those of other paths by extensive use of mantra. Vajrayana was sometimes labeled Mantrayana. Mantra (Sanskrit for “protection”) is the repeated vocalization of designated sounds in order to protect the mind from its ordinary ego-serving pathways and dedicate awareness to its original nature. Tantric practices, unlike other Buddhist vehicles, explicitly use the body as the path. Visualization makes use of the power of sight to bring the outside in and the inside out, to dissolve the boundary of our body. These practices are currently of great interest to neuroscientists. Sublime Landscapes
Photographs of Asia by Dr. Dilip Raval ✯
Dilip Raval belongs to the tradition of legendary American landscape photographers that includes Ansel Adams, Brett Weston, Elliot Porter, and John Sexton. His subject, however, is landscapes of Asia. The photographs in this exhibition were taken on repeated visits to Raval’s homeland of India and during travel to Nepal, Bhutan, Japan, Indonesia, and China. The elements are vibrant and present, and the images evoke awe, respect, and deep personal and human identity with the natural world. Many of Raval’s compositions are grand and symphonic. They are simultaneously far-reaching and precise, resolving form, light, color, shape, pattern, and prospect in a deeply satisfying and delicate harmony. Using the selective eye in the camera together with the manipulative potential of digital printmaking, the artist brings vast panoramas and close observations into the same frame. Movements of shape—layered mountains, deep valleys, terraced hillsides, leaves on a branch—and melodies of light and color draw the viewer through landscape toward a contemplative reverie that stops short of both nostalgia and cliché. At first glance, the images appeal to an instinctive love of beauty, but like the sublime tradition to which they more properly belong, they also bring into question the preservation of the individual and of the natural order on which he depends, a quietly insistent fear that nothing so beautiful can endure. Dr. Raval came to the United States from India to pursue graduate studies in chemistry, and he went on to manage scientific institutions. His works have appeared in exhibitions at many venues, notably the National Center for Performing Arts in Mumbai, India. Rusty Ayrton Chapman Video Installation ✯
Rusty Ayrton Chapman’s video, Erecting Monuments to the Gods, is a narrative about two warring aliens factions seeking power and raw materials. The artist is a recent recipient of the 2012 Clare Hart DeGolyer Memorial Fund Award presented by the Dallas Museum of Art. Her innovative stop-motion videos explore issues concerning the consumption of beauty and perfection. By removing objects from their original context, she creates works that question the status and functionality of the objects. Chapman received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of North Texas in 2011. The Kilgore native learned the art of stop motion filming from her father at a very early age. The art of stop motion filming is a time-consuming and very lengthy process, as the artist must shoot anywhere from five to ten hours to get 30-60 seconds of film. A portfolio of three of Chapman’s videos was also featured at the 2012 SCOPE Art Show in New York. Creative Myth 1, Bonefield and Slug Flower follow a loose storyline. They are all connected in a way, but each video can stand alone in terms of content. Currently, she works as an independent artist in Denton. Doctor Miracle The Dallas Opera ✯
Doctor Miracle is a hilarious oneact children’s opera about a young man’s quest to marry his true love, the mayor’s daughter. The story is set in the town of Padua, Italy, in the 19th century. In this clever scheme, the young man must disguise himself as a servant who makes a “poison” omelet, and then as a doctor who saves the family all for the sake of true love. Will the happy couple ever marry? This production is a partnership with the Dallas Opera, SMU Vocal Department, UNT Opera Program and Dallas Children’s Theater. All performances are with piano accompaniment. The French composer Georges Bizet wrote this charming and zany opera when he was only 18 years old for a competition organized by Jacques Offenbach. He shared first prize with Charles Lecocq. His reward was to have the piece performed 11 times at Offenbach’s Bouffes-Parisiens theatre. The premiere took place on April 9, 1857. Bizet is most famous for his opera Carmen, however his Doctor Miracle is the perfect introduction to opera. The fun part is finding out whether true love finds a way or if all the disguises backfire. The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered to await news of the family patriarch, their grandfather, who is living out his last hours in the local hospital. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, who quickly outgrew Hazlehurst, is back after a failed singing career on the West Coast; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach. Their troubles, grave and yet, somehow, hilarious, are highlighted by their priggish cousin, Chick, and by the awkward young lawyer who tries to keep Babe out of jail while helpless not to fall in love with her. In the end the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future. Written by Beth Henley, the play was the winner of the 1981 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. An astonishing first play, initially presented by the Actors Theatre of Louisville, then Off-Broadway, and then on Broadway, where it established the author as a major voice in theatre. The play also earned Henley a nomination for a Tony Award, and her screenplay for the film version of Crimes of the Heart was nominated for an Oscar as Best Adapted Screenplay. Henley was a graduate of SMU with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative, the Crimes of The Heart teems with measures of humanity and humor as it examines the plight of three young Mississippi sisters betrayed by their passions. THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN Andrew Garfield / Emma Stone ✯
One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in The Amazing SpiderMan. Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker, the new film stars Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as a young Peter/Spiderman and Emma Stone (Easy A, The Help) as the love interest, Gwen Stacy. The Supporting cast includes Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan with Martin Sheen and Sally Field playing the roles of Uncle Ben and Aunt May. The film is directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer) from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt (The Rundown, Zodiac), based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker, an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny. “This Peter Parker is a little different: he’s still an outsider, but he’s an outsider by choice,” says Webb. “He has a chip on his shoulder – he’s the kid who rejects people before they can reject him. The humor, the sarcasm, the rebellious streak emanates from that little kid who got left behind so long ago.” The Amazing Spiderman was shot entirely in 3D and will also be available in IMAX 3D Theaters. SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN Sixto Rodriguez ✯
In 1968, two producers went to a downtown Detroit bar to see an unknown recording artist – a charismatic Mexican-American singer/songwriter named Rodriguez, who had attracted a local following with his mysterious presence, soulful melodies and prophetic lyrics. They were immediately bewitched by the singer, and thought they had found a musical folk hero in the purest sense – an artist who reminded them of a Chicano Bob Dylan, perhaps even greater. They had worked with the likes of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, but they believed the album they subsequently produced with Rodriguez – Cold Fact – was the masterpiece of their producing careers. Despite good reviews, Cold Fact was a commercial disaster and marked the end of Rodriguez’s recording career before it had even started. Rodriguez sank back into obscurity. All that trailed him were stories of his escalating depression, and eventually he fell so far off the music industry’s radar that when it was rumored he had committed suicide, there was no conclusive report of exactly how and why. Of all the stories that circulated about his death, the most widely accepted – was that Rodriguez had set himself ablaze on stage having delivered these final lyrics: “But thanks for your time, then you can thank me for mine and after that’s said, forget it.” The album’s sales never revived, the label folded and Rodriguez’s music seemed destined for oblivion. Eventually a bootleg recording of Cold Fact somehow found its way to South Africa in the early 1970s and quickly developed a following through word-of-mouth among the youth. The reactionary government banned the record, ensuring no radio play, which only served to further fuel its cult status.
