BUZZ HPISD Hits $1 Billion Milestone HPISD will be the third district to have given more than $1 billion to the state under the program since it went into effect in 1992. Recapture, (as it is officially termed), has long been considered unfair by Highland Park school officials and Park Cities residents. Over past two decades, the controversial plan has survived Texas Supreme Court rulings and civil lawsuits. A total of 234 Texas school districts contribute more than $1.1 billion total annually, to the program.
At some point this month, Highland Park ISD is expected to reach the $1 Billion mark in its contribution to other Texas school districts through the state-mandated Robin Hood plan. For twenty years, HPISD has given a large measure of its property taxes to less affluent districts.

THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND Winspear Opera House ✯
Charlie Daniels is partly Western and partly Southern. His signature “bull rider” hat and belt buckle, his lifestyle on Twin Pines Ranch, his love of horses, cowboy lore and the heroes of championship rodeo, Western movies, and Louis L’Amour novels identify him as a Westerner. The son of a lumberjack and a Southerner by birth, his music – rock, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel --- is quintessentially Southern. It hasn’t been so much a style of music, but more the values consistently reflected in several styles that have connected Charlie Daniels with millions of fans. For decades, he as steadfastly refused to label his music as anything other than “CDB music,” music that has been popularized on a variety of radio formats. Like so many great American success stories, the Charlie Daniels saga begins in rural obscurity. Born in 1936 in Wilmington, North Carolina, he was raised on a musical diet that included Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, and the rhythm & blues and country music emanating respectively from Nashville’s 50,000 watt mega broadcasters WLAC and WSM. In 2009, Charlie Daniels was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame along with Chet Atkins, Billy Cox, Dick Dale, Victor Feldman, Fred Foster, Paul Riser, and Toto. Dickey Betts, former guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band, hosted Daniels’ induction in Nashville. The CDB performed a tight performance that included “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” That same year, Music City awarded Daniels with a star on the Walk of Fame. Christian music superstar Michael W. Smith returns to the Meyerson to celebrate the holidays with the DSO. Inspiring and entertaining hits from his Christmas album “It’s a Wonderful Christmas” are sure to make holiday spirits soar. In 1982, Michael was asked to play keyboards in a band that was backing up young artist Amy Grant. He also continued to write songs for himself. The story goes that Amy’s managers, Mike Blanton and Dan Harrell could not find a Christian record label that would sign Michael or a young New Yorker named Kathy Troccoli. Believing so much in these two young talents, they started Reunion Records. Michael made his very first record in 1983 and it was called “Michael W. Smith Project.” Michael wrote all the music and wife Debbie wrote the lyrics. The now famous song “Friends” debuted on this album. Michael continued to tour with Amy, as her opening act. More than 20 albums later, Michael W. Smith has become one of the most popular stars in Christian Music. In an effort to bring his music into the mainstream, Smith released the album Go West Young Man in 1990. The crossover hit “Place in This World” climbed to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1992, he released Change Your World, which included the hit “I Will Be Here for You.” In 1996, Michael founded Rocketown Records with Reunion executive Don Donahue and launched their first artist, Chris Rice. Michael and Don shared a dream to be part of a label where great songs were the focus, where artists, not acts, were developed. But for all of Smith’s accolades, leadership in his local church body, the business of being an artist, an author and a record label executive, Michael sums up his life as this, “to be remembered as a God-fearing man who loved his wife and kids well. A look back
Works Of Martin Schreiber ✯
The exhibit, Martin Schreiber Retrospective: A Journey in Hard-Edge Geometric Art, features early explorations in concrete art and minimalism through development of his later color band style. Born in Berlin, Germany, in November 1924, Martin Schreiber was a student of the late Reuben Tam at the Brooklyn Museum Art School. Mr. Schreiber enjoyed a long and successful art career both as a commercial art director in New York City with Dell Publishing and as a visual artist working in hard-edge geometric abstraction. Perhaps stemming from his early apprenticeships in the diamond trade, his work is a commitment to the hard-edge experience. In addition to New York City, Mr. Schreiber exhibited in Florida, Canada, and Brazil. Known for his highly disciplined art form, Mr. Schreiber’s work was described by Newsday’s Malcolm Preston as “almost surgical precision of craftsmanship”. Through subtle changes of color and intensity, his hard-edge band style produces soft edge light vibration and illusions of spatial expansion. In his sculpture and wall constructions, the artist directs small progressions in shape and size towards the same spatial expansion witnessed in his paintings. Some 2,500 years ago, Confucious (Kong Qiu or Kongzi, 551-479 B.C.) provided a list of likenesses between particular sensual qualities of carved jades such as luster, surface angularity, and veining patterns and qualities of perfected human character such as benevolence, loyalty, and virtue. Confucius went on to elaborated on his meaning in a passage from the Book of Rites: Museum: The Crow Collection Of Asian Art Exhibition: Recently Opened Details: www.CrowCollection.com ✯ The Turtle Creek News - CITY - www.VeryBestCity.com

Diana Al-Hadid
Commissioned Installation ✯
The Nasher Sculpture Center has commissioned an installation by Syrian-born American artist Diana AlHadid. The work of Diana Al-Hadid is on view at the Nasher Sculpture Center’s Corner Gallery through January 15, 2012. Al-Hadid’s craft is, in many ways, about architecture. Her sculptures often recall built structures— cathedrals, pipe organs, towers, labyrinths, cities—yet are made of simple, often delicate or fragile materials, such as polymer gypsum, plaster, fiberglass, wood, polystyrene, cardboard, wax, and paint, commonly found in art and industrial supply shops. Notes Nasher Sculpture Center Director Jeremy Strick: “Diana Al-Hadid creates breathtaking sculptures that surprise us by their unusual forms, unconventional use of materials, and distinctive range of reference and allusion. Her innovative work opens up new ground for the form and meaning of sculpture.” The sculptures have the appearance of unfinished buildings or archeological remains, and it is often difficult to discern if they are in the process of construction or collapse. Ranging in scale from the human to the architectural, her work references a diverse set of interests, including Arab and Greek mythology, Gothic and Middle Eastern architecture, cosmology and physics. It is their physical presence and ephemeral materiality that make the sculptures powerful, universally understandable evocations of the human condition. Al-Hadid will create anew work for the spaces of the Nasher Sculpture Center. Originally conceived by its architect, Renzo Piano, as an elegant, modern archeological site, the Nasher provides an ideal foil for Al-Hadid’s sculptural musings on architectural ruins. Ten Works, Ten Years SMU Meadows Museum ✯
In March 2001, a new building for the Meadows Museum on SMU’s campus was dedicated. This new edifice, constructed to house the expanding permanent collection and provide more space for exhibitions and education initiatives, was funded in great part by a generous gift from The Meadows Foundation. The Meadows’s new building features an outdoor plaza and sculpture garden, comprising a permanent installation of both modern and contemporary sculptures complete with a vantage point to Santiago Calatrava’s kinetic Wave below. To celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the inauguration of the Meadows Museum’s new home, this fall we will host an installation featuring ten significant works of art acquired by the Meadows over the past ten years. This display will feature selections from our holding of portraits–a strength of the museum’s collection – such as Richard Worsam Meade by Vicente López y Portaña and King Charles II by Juan Carreño de Miranda. Nineteenth-century landscapes by artists such as Joaquín Sorolla and Aureliano de Beruete will also be included in the installation. In prior decades, the museum’s collection was built up greatly by bequests from museum patrons. Within the last ten years, many works of art have entered the Meadows collection from the generosity of private donors as well as from the Challenge Grant, which was developed by The Meadows Foundation. The Challenge Grant matches one-to-one all monetary donations contributed toward the purchase of museum acquisitions or for funding other museum initiatives, up to five million dollars. Paul Booker
Curved Amber Rectangles #2 ✯
Paul Booker is a Dallas born and based artist. He studied art at the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in drawing and painting and finished his graduate studies at the University of North Texas in Denton. He is both a sculptor and a painter, but his work blurs those divisions. His sculpture consists of small hand drawn shapes printed onto thin plastic, then cut out and pinned together using insect collecting pins on the wall, creating complex architectural structures involving hundreds of pins and drawn shapes. The paintings mask the lines between two- and three-dimensional spaces, layering hand drawn images of clear gloss polyurethane. The upper layers of the drawings “float” on top of the polyurethane surface, casting shadows down onto the lower layers. Booker chooses organic shapes from his interest in how everyday visual images, such as text boxes or arrows, can become contents or signifiers of information, yet when left empty or isolated might develop their own intelligence, much like a swarm of ants or a flock of birds. Paul Booker was an Artist in Residence at the University of North Texas PRINT Press. His upcoming show opens on September 24 at the Museum of Southeast Texas in an exhibition entitled Obsessive Worlds. Selected exhibitions include the Dallas Museum of Art, Austin Museum of Art, 69th Regiment Armory in New York and the Modern Art Museum in Fort Worth. Hadar Sobol ✯
Israeli-born, Dallas-based artist Hadar Sobol will exhibit her installation in the new works space of The MAC. Hadar’s Bachelor of Design from The Israeli University for Fashion and Textile Design has prepared her for working in the delicate craft of embroidery. Sobol’s immersive installation combines video art and embroidery on vintage linen and paper. The use of embroidery and linen deliberately references traditional female roles. Sobol strives to achieve a full range of expression by shifting the decorative, delicate and “proper” traditional technique of embroidery towards the expressive, spontaneous and even impulsive edge. The attempt to use this medium out of its traditional context symbolizes the conflicts defining a modern woman’s life. Using imagery of female figures and religious symbols, Sobol draws spiritual and visual inspiration from Torah Wimples used in the religious ceremony of bar/bat mitzvahs. Sobol uses her fascination with the Eastern European cloth wimple to comment on family, religion, nationality and femininity. Hadar Sobol earned her Bachelor of Design, Textile Design with excellence in 1997 from The Israeli University for Fashion and Textile Design, Tel Aviv. Sobol was the Associate Designer and Producer with Rakefet Levi, the most prominent Performance Art Designer in Israel. Sobol has recently attended life drawing and mix media classes at Collin County Community College and Southern Methodist University. She has received numerous awards from juried exhibitions in the Dallas area.
