American Design Ed: One step into the past – Two Steps into the future ~ Joe Carolino

Introduction

When you think about your design education and yourself as a creative, what is it that really lands you a killer opportunity or career? Your portfolio, experience, and interview/ communication/people skills are some of the crucial ones. So why not work on perfecting our craft earlier and in a more effective way? Why not have a guild for the next generation of creative craftsmen? Why not dedicate time and effort like traditional guild members did hundreds of years ago? This is needed now more than ever given the over saturation of creatives with degrees. With this idea I want to bridge the gap between being educated and being a design professional. Post high school design education in America, in its current state, should change and evolve because it is producing students. A guild like style paired with a high-end apprentice model will offer hands on experience earlier in a students learning process. This will ultimately benefit the young designer because they will learn more about how design itself works in the professional field. As form follows function the student will start to develop their own design ethics and morals earlier on. This will equip design students with the tools and sharpened minds to take on the design world with more purpose and high quality craft. What is design, graphic design, commerical art or what ever you wanna call it, what is it? The Oxford American Dictionary defines graphic design as the art or skill of combining text and pictures in advertisements, magazines, or books. Art and Design has been around since the begining of time and is always changing and evolving since the begining of time but that is another paper in itself. The term “graphic design” as a profession was first coined by William Addison Dwiggins in 1922. William Addison Dwiggins was U.S. type designer, calligrapher, book designer and illustrator. Ever since the term was coined the amounts and demands of a designer have been constantly growing and changing. With that said an organized form of education is needed. Design school/education is a fairly complex subject in itself and my research has shown there are many different methods and variations all over the globe. Even looking back in history and today’s educational systems they have their similarities and differences. Most of the top design schools globally have some form of foundations and we can thank the Bauhaus for that. Most foundation courses include multidiciplinary methods, and you get a choice of what you want to take which I love. Diciplines like printmaking, photography, drawing, painting, mixed media and basically any type of art you can think of. You can take a little bit of them all or go crazy with one. The Bauhaus was a school in Germany that combined crafts, design and fine arts, and was famous for the approach to design that it publicized and taught. The Bauhaus operated from 1919 to 1933 and has changed art and design education ever since.

There would also be a summer apprenticeship option that could be started within the first year, which is highly recommended. EXP 04–CAMPA AIGN Pitstop. So as I continue my research and writing I have found out my paper up until this point has been going in a route that has strayed away from my original idea. What I want to do is have a design educational system that focuses on craft and being good at what you do. A more focused program rather than cookie cutter commercialized one. I took a step back and looked at what I have made and decided to put it at a hault and came up with another solution. Thats the great thing about a thesis and especially with the subject of education. I feel that this idea will always stick with me and will be in my mind forever. Always in a constant beta, such a great concept is’nt it?

Let’s take a look at what old guilds/artistan and apprenticeships used to be. According to wikipedia artisans were the dominant producers of consumer products prior to the Industrial Revolution. According to classical economics theory, the division of labour occurs with internal market development. In pre-industrial cities, craftsmen tended to form associations based on their trades, confraternities of textile workers, masons, carpenters, carvers, glass workers, each of whom controlled secrets of traditionally imparted technology, the “arts” or “mysteries” of their crafts. Usually the founders were free independent master craftsmen. With that said in theory the universities are doing the same thing, but I feel the focus on the students and craft is lost. Gadi Amit says “I’m eager to hire the next great class of designers, but to my dismay--and the dismay of many young hopefuls who’ve often spent many years and thousands of dollars preparing to enter the industry--I’m finding that the impressive academic credentials of most students don’t add up to the basic skills I require in a junior designer. The schools’ results are often a muddled mess, the end result of programs pulling in every direction, with no sense of focused common ground, no basic core curriculum in design.”

Gadi Amit is the president of NewDealDesign LLC, a strategic design studio in San Francisco.
