African American musicians in minstrel line, c. 1860s, albumen print. Courtesy of Jim Bollman. Throughout history, Blacks have remain loyal to their dreams and fought for their recognition.

While doing my daily surfing through my Facebook timeline, a close friend of mine updated his status with an all too familiar post “There’s no honor or loyalty these days….” Although personally I come across a post like this or quite similar everyday it made me really think about my ups and downs throughout my entertainment career. I think it is safe to say that

many people in this entertainment have encountered disloyal people. I guess what don’t kill us makes us stronger but it also makes this game so cutthroat that the weak cannot and will not survive. On a personal level, disloyalty has made me the savvy witty individual I am today. When networking, I can sense the disloyalty a mile away. I can sense if a person do not have any intentions on honoring their word. This learned skill has helped me maneuver through the snakes in this industry. Just showing the slightest loyalty to next individual will set you apart from the masses. As a black man, I can honestly say, even apart from the music game, we as a people have forgotten the importance of loyalty. We have forgotten the importance of coming together as One to achieve a goal. Too many go about their day in a random fashion, not committed to anything; not there music, not there art, not even there family and friends. In honor of Black History Month, I challenge all to not simply just recite a “little known Black History Fact, but for us all to get back to our roots in having faith or a devotion to what we love, to our cause or dreams. To lift one another and to be loyal, to be willing to sacrifice because this is what truly makes us stronger. It is time to create a music culture that values real people relationships. IAMU magazine was once an idea, but through faith and action that idea turn into something amazing Mills Johnson IAMU Editor-N-Chief

ha PHounDation is an extremely talented Hip Hop Crew. Each member brings different aspects to the group that makes them successful. A’one aka Relli is a producer/rapper that brings a lot of instrumentals with him. He is the president of a production company called Block Bleedaz Music. Block Bleedaz provides the majority of the beats featured in Tha Phoundation’s upcoming album as well as their extremely successful mixtape “Phrom Tha Ground Up”. A’one considers himself Commander and Chief of Tha PHounDation, and his concepts are often the heart of the songs. EP tha Trigga Man, with his Southern Swagg, always adds the perfect flavor to the mix. His range is incredible from song to song. One song he raps quickly and clearly; then he comes back with a slow one for the ladies. and out of the booth quicker than anyone around. King D is considered the clown of the group always making people laugh with his quick and entertaining jokes; he can also impersonate anyone perfectly. His humor comes out a lot in his verses, but he also knows how to come in flawlessly once a theme is established for the song. Play any instrumental and he freestyles to it. Murk Dawg is the quietest guy in the room, but he is the loudest one on the track. His verses are often the group’s favorite. He has a very talented mind and when he comes up with a concept for a song or verse, the song is immediately elevated. He is currently going to school learning how to mix and master songs. With each member’s different voice and style and concepts, Tha PHounDation is on their way to being a worldwide success. Already gaining fans in the Southern United States their sights are seton the entire country before they conquer the world. eto Vangundy born and raised in the rough streets of Chicago. Known for its massive crime rate, Veto hails from southwest housing project LeClaire Courts which is not known for anything special. Many people call him "The diamond in the rough" and "a breath of fresh air" comparing him to the mean polluted streets of Chicago. Growing up listening to Jay-Z, Jadakiss, Beanie Sigel, and other artist were the reason Vangundy started to rap. The death of his older brother in 2004 was the reason he took rapping serious. Growing up in a hip hop city surrounded by talented artist who put Chicago on the map

such as Common, Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, and Twista, Veto puts his "Southwest" feel into the mix. Veto's storytelling and play on words brings Chicago back to what it was known for.

I

am DJ KBK, Northern Arizona's number one hip hop DJ. Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1990, my family moved to Sierra Vista, Arizona in 1995. Sierra Vista is a small city that is full of problems. Facing much adversity and uphill battles, I made my way to Flagstaff, Arizona in 2008 to attend Northern Arizona University. After really investing myself in my craft, I soon became the main DJ for the University playing at all parties and events that required music. Soon, through much hard work, I became a household name among the nightlife crowd in Flagstaff, Arizona. I soon found myself talking to a variety of people looking to sponsor me and was finally picked up by the biggest clothing company in Arizona, Not Cal Clothing. I started DJing at bars and concert venues becoming the number one hip hop DJ in all of Northern AZ. I was selected to participate in the Redbull threestyle

contest and won out of 18 other DJs. This led to many dealings with the Redbull company and many sponsorship opportunities. I then got sponsored by a Flagstaff local clothing company called Nerd Inc Clothing and then a statewide known restaurant/ bar called Louie's Chicken Shack. Winning the Redbull DJ competition grabbed the attention of a nationally-known label

called DRE ent. I am not signed to any contract with them but we do a lot of business and promotional work together. They work closely with Hip Hop Weekly magazine and many other media outlets. I have been interviewed and

featured in more Arizona newspapers and hip hop sites/magazines than I can count. I also have my own DJ reality series on YouTube called: Keepin it KBK, which is a self filmed "day in the life" look at the life of DJ KBK. We just got finished with the first season and have started the 2nd season. As you can see, I am very well known and have grown all this success in the hip hop world through Dedication, Determination, Hard work, and Prayer which not only is my life motto but four keys that I live by. All these blessings have been opened to me in a little less than 2.5 years. I have DJ'd for artists' performances and in arenas with over 400 people. Feel free to email me back or call my personal phone anytime.

the gangsta rap sub-genre,[4] sometimes credited as the most important group in the history of hip hop.[5] Active from 1986 to 1991, the rap group endured controversy due to the explicit nature of their lyrics, and was subsequently banned from many mainstream American radio stations. In spite of this, the group has sold over 10 million CD units in the United States alone.

Back in the 80’s as a kid in Hartford CT I would Here a song blasting on the radio referncing Eazy-E. “There once was a hustler from around the way Eazy”! long before the internet became a popular vice for information YO MTV raps and BET’s Rap City was the only place you can go with ear shot with out having to pay money for info on your favorite Artist. Eazy was the kids favorite because he looked like a kid himself even though he was much older. Kids on my street all thought he was a teenager ; who was just super cool as the other side of the pillow. Eazy Died died when I was in the 8th grade at this time the East-Coast West Coast non-sense was just starting to brew and i mind was totally indulged in the East Coast.. But His sudden death did shock me because he was the first rap artist i have

known to die of AIDS. AIDS was a Rabbid epidemic of it’s time. Not alot of people understood at the time. But The African American Communities were being Slaughtered by it at an alarming rate. Magic Johnson was diagnosed with having HIV and has never looked sick a day in his life Since he announced he was diagnosed with the virus. Magic was 31 when he found out he had the Virus. Eazy-E was also 31 But he Died from Aids not HIV.. His Legacy will also live on through the music he created and his gracious message to his fans... Easy -E was one of Hip-Hops first Monguls we salute You Eazy-E.. Colin ST.John

N.W.A (an initialism for Niggaz Wit Attitudes)[1] [2][3] is an American hip hop group from Compton, California, widely considered one of the seminal acts of

The original lineup consisted of Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and MC Ren; Arabian Prince embarked on a solo career in 1989 and Ice Cube left in December of that year over royalty disputes. Several members would later become platinum-selling solo artists in the 1990s. Their debut album Straight Outta Compton marked the beginning of the new gangsta rap era as the production and social commentary in their lyrics were revolutionary within the genre.[3] Rolling Stone ranked N.W.A number 83 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.”[6] In October 2012, N.W.A were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[7] The group was assembled by Compton-based Eazy-E, who co-founded Ruthless Records with Jerry Heller. Initially, N.W.A consisted of Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, who in turn brought DJ Yella on board.[8] Dre and Yella were both formerly members of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, as DJs and producers. Ice Cube was added to the roster after he had started out as a rapper for the group “C.I.A.”[9] Ruthless released the single “Panic Zone” in 1987 with Macola

Records, which was later included on the compilation album N.W.A. and the Posse. N.W.A was still in its developing stages, and is only credited on three of the eleven tracks, notably the uncharacteristic record “Panic Zone,” “8-Ball,” “Dopeman,” which marked the first collaboration of Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and south london based MC, Paul Trueman. Mexican rapper Krazy-Dee co-wrote “Panic Zone,” which was originally called “Hispanic Zone,” but the title was later changed when Dr. Dre advised Krazy-Dee that the word “hispanic” would hinder sales.[10] Also included was Eazy-E’s solo track “Boyz-n-the-Hood.”[11] In 1988, rapper MC Ren joined the group. Eric Lynn Wright[1][2] (September 7, 1963 – March 26, 1995), better known by his stage name Eazy-E who is affectionately called “The Godfather Of Gangsta Rap” was an American rapper who performed solo and in the hip hop group N.W.A. Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright in Compton, California. His uncle is the singer and band member Charles Wright, who formed the Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. After dropping out of high school in the tenth grade, he supported himself primarily by selling drugs before investing in Ruthless Records and becoming a rapper. When Ruthless artists Dr. Dre and Ice Cube wrote “Boyz-n-the-Hood”, Dre, Cube, and Eazy formed

[3]

N.W.A. After DJ Yella, MC Ren, and Arabian Prince joined the group, N.W.A released N.W.A. and the Posse. In 1988, they released their most controversial album, Straight Outta Compton. The group released two more albums and then disbanded after Eazy released Dr. Dre from his contract. Formation of Ruthless records Eric Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright on September 7, 1963, in Compton, California, a Los Angeles suburb notorious for gang activity and crime.[5][6] His father was a postal worker and his mother was a grade school administrator.[7] Wright dropped out of high school in the tenth grade,[8] but later received a high-school general equivalency diploma (GED).[9] Wright supported himself primarily by selling drugs.[8] Wright’s friend Jerry Heller admits that he witnessed Wright selling marijuana, but says that he never saw him sell cocaine. As Heller noted in his book Ruthless: A Memoir, Wright’s “dope dealer” label was part of his “self-forged armor”.[10] Wright was also labeled as a “thug”. Heller explains: “The hood where he grew up was a dangerous place. He was a small guy. ‘Thug’ was a role that was widely understood on the street; it gave you a certain level of protection in the sense that people hesitated to fuck with you. Likewise,

‘dope dealer’ was a role that accorded you certain privileges and respect.”[10] In 1986, at the age of 23, Wright had allegedly earned as much as USD $250,000 from dealing drugs. However, he decided that he could make a better living in the Los Angeles hip-hop scene, which was growing rapidly in popularity.[11] He started recording songs during the mid1980s in his parent’s garage.[9] The original idea for Ruthless Records came when Wright asked Heller to go into business with him. Wright suggested a half-ownership company, but it was later decided that Wright would get eighty percent of the company’s income, and Heller would only get twenty percent. Heller said to Wright, “Every dollar comes into Ruthless, I take twenty cents. That’s industry standard for a manager of my caliber. I take twenty, you take eighty percent. I am

responsible for my expenses, and you’re responsible for yours. You own the company. I work for you.”[10] Along with Heller, Wright invested much of his money into Ruthless Records.[12] Heller claims that he invested the first $250,000, and would eventually put up to $1,000,000 into the company. After Dr. Dre left Ruthless Records, executives Mike Klein and Jerry Heller sought assistance from the Jewish Defense League (JDL). Klein, a former Ruthless Records director of business affairs, said this provided Ruthless Records with leverage to enter into negotiations with Death Row Records over Dr. Dre’s departure.[28] While Knight had sought an outright release from Ruthless Records for Dr. Dre, the JDL and Ruthless Records management negotiated a release in which the record label would continue to receive money and publishing rights from future Dr. Dre projects with Death Row Records, founded by Dr. Dre with Suge Knight. [29] The FBI launched a money-laundering investigation under the assumption that the JDL was extorting money from Ruthless Records to fight their causes. This led to JDL spokesperson Irv Rubin issuing a press release stating “There was nothing but a close, tight relationship” between Eazy-E and the organization On February 24, 1995, Eazy-E was admitted into Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with what he believed to be asthma. Instead he was diagnosed with AIDS. He announced his illness in a public statement on March

16. Eazy’s sexual activity began at the age of twelve and resulted in not only a fatal disease, but seven children with six different women. [11][30][31] He died due to “complications from AIDS” one month after his diagnosis, on March 26, 1995, at approximately 6:35 PM (Pacific time). He was 31 years old. During the week of March 20, having already made amends with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, Eazy-E drafted his last message to fans. One week after the release of that message, Eazy succumbed to the disease.[9] [32] Eazy was buried at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.[33][34] In November 1995, shortly after Eazy-E’s death, Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton was released.[4][35] B.G. Knocc Out later claimed in an interview that Eazy-E had been murdered by Jerry Heller or Suge Knight.[36] Musical influences and style Allmusic cites Eazy-E’s influences as Ice-T, Redd Foxx, King Tee, Bootsy Collins, Run-D.M.C., Richard Pryor, The Egyptian Lover, Schoolly D, Too $hort, Prince, The Sugarhill Gang, and George Clinton.[37] In the documentary The Life and Timez of Eric Wright, Eazy-E mentions collaborating with many of his influences.[38] When reviewing Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton, Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted “...Eazy-E sounds revitalized, but the music simply isn’t imaginative. Instead of pushing forward and creating a distinctive style, it treads over familiar gangsta territory, complete with bottomless bass, whining synthesizers, and meaningless boasts.”[39] When reviewing Eazy-Duz-It, Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic said, “In terms of production, Dr. Dre and Yella meld together P-Funk,

Def Jam-style hip-hop, and the leftover electro sounds of mid-’80s Los Angeles, creating a dense, funky, and thoroughly unique style of their own.” Birchmeier described Eazy’s style as “dense, unique, and funky,” and said that it sounded “absolutely revolutionary in 1988.”[37] Several members of N.W.A wrote lyrics for Eazy-Duz-It: Ice Cube, The D.O.C., and MC Ren.[40] The EP 5150: Home 4 tha Sick features a song written by Naughty By Nature. The track “Merry Muthaphuckkin’ Xmas” features Menajahtwa, Buckwheat, and Atban Klann as guest vocalists, and “Neighborhood Sniper” features Kokane as a guest vocalist.[41] It’s On () 187um Killa features several guest vocalists, including Gangsta Dresta, B.G. Knocc Out. Kokane, Cold 187um, Rhythum D, and Dirty Red.[42] Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton featured several guest vocalists, including B.G. Knocc Out, Gangsta Dresta, Sylk-E. Fyne, Dirty Red, Menajahtwa, Roger Troutman, and ex-N.W.A members MC Ren and DJ Yella
