You’re only as strong as you’re beliefs.” This is a one of the many motivational quotes Ms. Slater shares with the public daily. The NRA Ain’t Gonna Punk Me! by Russell Simmons Global Grind.com

T

he NRA stands for National Rifle Association. It was founded in 1871 with the mission of creating rifle clubs comprised of mostly Civil War veterans to improve their marksmanship. Today it has a membership of over four million people with an annual budget of over $300 million dollars, $20 million of which is spent on political lobbying. It no longer just focuses on rifles. They say that the NRA is the most powerful lobbying organization in our country. They say that after President Clinton put a ban on assault weapons in 1994, the NRA was the reason why many of the Democrats who voted in favor of the ban lost their jobs. They say because of what happened in 1994, every

politician is now afraid of the NRA. President Bush reversed the ban on assault weapons and President Obama has not touched the subject. We have been left with laws that allow people to own weapons that are more powerful than any regular police officer has access to and on par with weapons of war. And not only does it allow people to own these weapons, the NRA has been successful at blocking attempts to pass reasonable legislation that would require background checks at gun-shows (currently there are none), as well as blocking people on the terror watch list and those who are mentally unstable from obtaining guns and putting an end to the sale of accessories like 100 round drums. They are also the group behind the “Stand Your Ground” law that George Zimmerman claims protects him from being convicted of killing Trayvon Martin. Our nation has been held hostage by 4 million people and $300

million dollars. The safety of our schools, our streets, our homes, our movie theaters, is being controlled by those who cling to their guns, their assault weapons and their weapons of war. They don’t intimidate me, so I will speak my piece, as I am a man of peace. Let me break down two highprofile shootings. The gunman in the Gabrielle Giffords shooting in Arizona used a 9 mm handgun, killing six and injuring fourteen. The shooter had a thirty bullet magazine with one in the chamber and was able to get off 31 shots. It was during a moment when he had to re-load his weapon that 61-year-old Patricia Maisch wrestled him to the ground and stopped the massacre. Contrary, the shooter in the Aurora Theater shooting had a AR-15 semi-automatic assault weapon with a 100 round drum, along with two hand-guns and a rifle. He had bought 6000 rounds of ammo and loaded up on body armor, all of which he bought legally

on the internet. The AR-15 has the capability of shooting 50-60 bullets per minute that would pierce through a steel door. The shooter killed 12 people and injured 58 before his gun jammed. The two police officers who first arrived on the scene would have been out-powered by the shooter, as all they had were handguns and shotguns. Their lives were potentially saved by a jammed weapon. Both incidents were horrific. Both incidents should never have happened. But in the case of Aurora, the shooter was able to injure or kill 50 more people than the shooter in Arizona (and he was shooting in the dark compared to broad daylight). So, it is difficult for me to swallow the argument that if we ban assault weapons, people will just find a way to continue killing at the alarming numbers they do now. We might have saved multiple lives and stopped the injury of dozens of others if the shooter in Colorado didn’t use the weapon of his choice. When anyone dies from senseless violence in this country, I will raise my voice of support for tougher gun laws. In one year, guns murdered 35 in Australia, 39 in England, 60 in Spain, 194 in Germany, 200 in Canada & 9,484 in USA. It is unfathomable to me that the only time this country or the media wants to broach the subject is when there are mass shootings, and most of the victims are white. Well, I hate to break the news to you, but there are mass shootings in Chicago every weekend. There are mass shootings in New York City every weekend. There are mass shootings in Los An-

geles every weekend. EVERY 39 MINUTES, A BLACK CHILD OR TEENAGER IS SHOT IN AMERICA, AND THE MEDIA DOESN’T MENTION IT AND EVERYONE ELSE KEEPS IT MOVING. And we only want to mention the word “gun reform” when white people are killed? My heart is heavy for the victims in Colorado, but I can’t be silent because every politician in Washington and around this country is afraid of the NRA. No other country in the civilized world allows this to happen. Only in the land of the free, where politicians can be legally bribed and our democracy is for sale, do citizens have access to weapons of war. Well, I’m not a politician, so the NRA can’t silence me and they certainly ain’t gonna punk me! The time has come for our nation to face the National Rifle Association and its bullying-tactics. There is no way that our forefathers envisioned twelve innocent people lying dead on the floor of a movie theater when they wrote the Second Amendment. They didn’t even know what an assault weapon was or what urban communities would become. A man walks into a movie theater dressed as “The Joker” from Batman and shoots seventy people, and how do we respond? We ban people from wearing costumes!?!?! How about we address the real problem by banning weapons of war, so we never deny the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for another innocent American again. -Russell Simmons If you want join in fighting the NRA’s control of our country, please visit MayorsAgainstIlle-

he Grey Area: Dating and Race – Is it Racism or a Preference. Recently I was engaged in a strong debate with a good friend of mine. He stated that he only prefers to date within his race – Black (using the term “Black” in the general sense). Interestingly enough, I just had another discussion with someone else who stated that he, although Black, don’t like to date Black people and only date White individuals. They both said the same thing: “It’s just my preference.” But is it really? I tend to disagree. In this hypersensitive culture, I find that all too often racism lurks and is the foundation for a lot of belief systems. Simply put, by stating that you would or would not date someone, solely because of that person’s race, to me is not a preference, but racist. We all discriminate – true (I like blue/green over yellow, I rather read than watch a movie, prefer

bright colors to dark ones…). But I can honestly say that when it comes to dating, I have not categorically ruled out an entire ethnic group. A preference to me is to say, “if I had to choose, my racial preference would be dating someone –Black, Asian, White, Hispanic, Native American….. and so on, in that order.” Here, there is a real preference because you have a “greater liking for one alternative over

another or others” (the definition of “preference”). The key to a “preference” is the existence of “alternatives.” When you categorically state that you would never date outside your race or would only date a specific race, you have completely eliminated the other alternatives. By its very definition and by your actions, it is no longer a “preference” but racial discrimination. Don’t believe me, ask the person why they will or

won’t date a person of a specific ethnic category and you will hear the following (or a variation thereof): “blacks are too aggressive, loud, conceited, ghetto, uneducated or not attractive;” “asians are dirty, messy, rude, loud, conservative, not progressive enough, stick to their own-kind, or ignorant;” “whites are messy, smell like their dogs, have bad breathe, self-entitled;” or “hispanics are nasty, will sleep with anyone, rude, uneducated, uncircumcised..” and so on and so on. I won’t even mention Arabs (i.e. terrorists).. All of these so-called justifications are nothing more than racist ideologically wrapped in a more politically correct package. But it is racist nonetheless.

hen Sarai Juelz first heard and memorized Diana Ross' 1980's hit Upside Down at the age of 3, everyone knew she was destined to be a star. When she was able to put words together on paper it was pretty evident that song writing would follow. Born and raised in the Red Clay part of the world, Sarai Juelz (suh-rye ju-wellz) born Kimberly Howard comes with a heart built with fire and desire and promises to not make her renaming herself in loving memory of her children Sarai Imani and Zion Juelz in vain. An innocence compared to Aaliyah, a raw edge like Beyonce, the mental temple of Erykah Badu, and a relatable soul like the one we find in Mary J. Blige, she welcomes you to her world. Her debut album ANTHEM is due October of this year but her mix tape ep ANTHEM is already bringing in positive reviews. With songs like You Did That, Look At You Now, and Breathe Ms. Juelz is bound to be a forced to be reckoned with. When asked why she wrote ANTHEM she says, "I wrote this album because I was tired of crying about my heartbreak, so I decided to celebrate it. I was not only tired of hearing sad love songs about a man/ woman who cheated, lied, etc, but I was tired of writing those songs. I was like I wanna feel

happy that I'm out of this mess, so that's when I decided to be happy that he was gone." Sarai is no stranger to hardship. She grew up in a small part of Georgia called Soperton to a mother who battled drug and alcohol addiction. When asked about her inspiration she says, "It's my life that inspires me more than anything. Being raised by a single parent of five children who was fighting addiction was hard in itself, but I saw other things as a child and young woman and experienced things I should not have like rape and domestic violence. But I beat those odds and I came out not being

a victim of those circumstances anymore. So with that alone, everything is a celebration to me. My whole life is an anthem!" With refreshing comments like this, who will be able to wait for her album?

IAMU:who were some of your musical influences coming up? My musical influences growing up were Diana Ross, Betty Wright, Millie Jackson, Expose’, Lisa Lisa, Cheryl Pepsii Riley, Starship, Miami Bass music and that whole movement, Teddy Riley, and Tevin Campbell. I grew up on soul music because of my mother, but I also listened to The Clark Sisters, Mary J. Blige and anything 90’s. IAMU: when can we expect your album to come out? Sarai Juelz:My album ANTHEM is scheduled for October, but the ANTHEM ep mixtape is available now. IAMU: what would the perfect song sound like to you? Sarai Juelz : The perfect song would be a ballad written by The Dream, produced by Kanye West, sang by Beyonce, with Brandy arranging and singing on all the backgrounds. IAMU: when did you decide you wanted to become a singer Sarai Juelz : I never decided I wanted to be a singer, it was already decided for me by God. Have I lived a life that delayed it? Yes, but that duty was already given to me. I truly feel I’ve lived the life I have lived so I can write about it and sing about it in a song to help someone else. I mean, I graduated from college to become a teacher, ended up working at Wal-Mart, and now I answer calls in a call center. Clearly, I’ve been running from something. As soon

as I picked back up a pen and mic, I felt free! The only time I ever truly feel free is when I have headphones on and I’m releasing my pain through a mic and speakers. I’ve never felt that in a classroom, at a register or on an aisle, and I’m most definitely not getting this feeling from answering calls. That’s why I say it was decided already. IAMU: any shout outs? Sarai Juelz : I want to shout out my God for always showing me mercy even when I don’t deserve it. I want to thank my mother Justine, my pops Theartis, my sisters and brothers Erica, Kristy, Latrice, Jermaine, Ness Lee, Treci, Adrian, Curtis, and Shalamar. I want to thank my nieces and nephews Tycora, Karen, Imari, Rashidi, Bryceton, Christian, Charity, Derek, Jamarion,DJ, JR, and soon to be Loren Sarai who are my number one fans. My family is much too big to name everyone, but I love you Jordan and Thomas family and all my newfound friends as well as loyal friends who have become my family. Ya’ll have always supported me and believed in me. I also want to thank all my friends and fans on Facebook, Twitter, and most of all ReverbNation for giving me a platform. I want to send a special shout out to Tim Newhouse for giving me more courage to do what I do and for always being honest with me during our studio sessions. Your ear and mind is beautiful! Last, but definitely not least, I want to thank every man that broke my heart, every friend that lost my trust, and every person that said I could not do it.

I

was born in Portland OR and was raised with 3 sisters and a Mother. I was raised in life to work hard to get where I want to be like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, They both came from a similar background but through those struggles and hard times in life they still didn’t let it bring them down because they already knew what they wanted to do so they started practicing at a young age to get where they wanted to be. Like many others there were still people and obstacles that tried getting in their way but they wouldn’t give up and now look at where it got them in life? They are known as one of the top elite players in the NBA, The only difference between the two is that Michael Jordan’s name will still be known for many years to come as the greatest basketball player that ever lived. I am not saying I am on that same level as them but I got the same motivation that they have, Such as I am going to do all that I can and work my hardest in order to get to the top. I have always had a strong passion for music ever since I was born so I practiced hard and studied every day to get to know the real fundamentals behind music and by the age of 15, I started recording and developing my own unique style that no one has ever touched so far. What I am looking forward to in life is to become a positive influence for the youth to look up to as a great role model someday.

evin D. Streeter was born on April 7, 1988 in Miami, Florida. Devin was raised by his mother Saundra Streeter and stepfather Daryl Hobbs Sr.; due to his father Kenneth Ingram being incarcerated his whole life and not really knowing him. Being the oldest of 7 siblings on his mother’s side, Devin had to take on adult responsibilities at an early age. The pressure of taking on responsibilities as a man and family problems while still a child came with a great deal of pressure, disappointment and grief. Life was not easy for young Devin and he used writing as an outlet to vent his hurt and sorrow and as a result, Skeet Da Young Poet was created. Devin began writing gospel songs in the 6th grade. During his junior year of High School, his worst subject was English; but he always had a gift to write. When he wrote a poem titled “Am I A Black African American” that was when he began to cultivate his gift to write. After graduating from Miramar High in 2006, Devin joined the Marine Corps and his desire to express his feelings on paper became stronger.
