P25,000 per rebel President Rodrigo Duterte has turned up his verbal attacks against communist rebels, saying he is willing to pay P25,000 for every New People’s Army member killed. The offer was higher than the previous P20,000 bounty he dangled to members of indigenous communities in response to Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison’s threat that the NPA could kill one soldier a day to force the resumption of peace talks. “Now, I’m placing a pre-
mium. Sige, P25,000. If you work really hard to crawl across the forest, you’ll surely be able to shoot even just one. If you can shoot a bird above you, then how much more about an [NPA] whose head is so big?” Duterte said during a private meeting in Cebu City on Tuesday, a transcript of which was provided by Malacañang to the media late Wednesday night. Duterte added it would be cheaper to go for this method in the government’s counterinsurgency campaign. “Kwenta-kwenta ko kasi
Kuwait condemns Duterte statements on OFWs
MANILA, Philippines — Kuwait has condemned President Duterte’s statement calling for the evacuation of Filipinos from the oil-rich country, saying this could affect the relations between the two nations. “We actually condemn the statements of the President of the Philippines. And you know we are communicating with the President of the Philippines and with the minister of foreign affairs of the Philippines to try and explain the conditions of work of all Philippines workers,” Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah said at a press conference yesterday with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. The US official is in Kuwait for the meeting of the global coalition against the Islamic State. Duterte’s call was in response to reports of massive abuses suffered by Filipino workers – mostly domestic helpers – at the hands of their employers. Triggering his call was the discovery of the remains of murdered Filikung mag-abot itong four years. P***, mahal masyado. Gyera eh. President Duterte met with Kuwaiti Ambassador Saleh Ahmad Althwaik last week to discuss the matter, after which he ordered initially the suspension of deployment of Filipino workers to Kuwait. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III on Monday said he had issued an administrative order on the ban, on President Duterte’s order. “Of course, there are individual accidents that happen; however, we collaborate in the investigations with the Filipino authorities. So we are in direct communication,” the Kuwaiti foreign minister said. He added the 130,000 Filipinos in his country comprise the “community that makes less problems.” “However, this escalation will not serve the interests of either Kuwait or the Philippines,” Sheikh Sabah said. he said. The President’s offer did not sit well with an international human rights watchdog. “Duterte’s offer of a bounty
for killing communist rebels, however, encourages war crimes such as shooting enemy fighters who have surrendered or are wounded, or who are civilians protected from attack,” said Human Rights Watch (HRW) Asia division researcher Carlos Conde. “Such rhetoric is especially dangerous because the Philippines has a history of Lumad community members being on both sides of the country’s many internal conflicts, as both fighters and victims. This includes joining paramilitaries and militias during the nearly half-century long Maoist insurgency and equally protracted Islamic separatist movements and local conflicts in the south,” he added. Conde said respecting rights “rather than offering bounties” was “the best way to help the Lumad.”—By VIRGIL LOPEZ, GMA News

The pastor arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 at 6:35 p.m. on board Philippine Airlines flight PR113 from Los Angeles. Quiboloy was earlier reported to have been detained at Honolulu airport for a day after federal agents found $350,000 in cash hidden in socks in a private plane where he was on board. Gun parts were also reportedly found on the plane. A certain Felina Salinas, who
was also on board the aircraft, claimed that the cash was hers and was later arrested and charged with attempted bulk cash smuggling. Only Quiboloy’s staff were seen at the arrival area of the airport, who said the pastor will head home straight to Davao City.
The pastor’s staff, however, remained mum on his reported detention in Honolulu. ABS-CBN News reached out to the Kingdom of Jesus Christ office in Davao City for comment but the church said it was not aware of the issue.-- reports from Michael Delizo and Mike Navallo, ABS-CBN News
Kuwait calms Philippines after dead worker found in freezer KUWAIT CITY (AP) — Kuwait’s foreign minister tried to calm anger in the Philippines on Tuesday after a Filipina worker was found dead in a freezer, hoping to defuse an ordered “total ban” on workers coming to the small, oil-rich nation. It’s the latest case to draw the anger of populist Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who in January complained that cases of abuse reported by Filipina domestic workers “always” seem to be coming from Kuwait. There have been prominent cases of abuse in the past, including an incident in December 2014 where a Kuwaiti’s pet lions fatally mauled a Filipina maid. But what pushed the Philippines over the edge appears to the killing of a domestic worker whose body was left in a freezer in a Kuwait City apartment reportedly abandoned since November 2016. On Monday, the Philippines’ Department of Labor and Employment issued an order calling for “a total ban on deployment of all overseas Filipino workers to Kuwait.” It’s unclear how widely the order is being enforced as many Filipinos are still working across industries in Kuwait. Speaking to journalists Tuesday, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sabah Khalid Al Sabah said “this escalation will not benefit the relationship be-
tween Kuwait and the Philippines.” He also said Kuwait warmly welcomed Filipino workers. “We have 170,000 Filipino nationals living a decent life here,” the minister said. “They have one of the least number of problems out of all expatriate communities. Isolated incidents unfortunately happen. We share all of our findings and investigations with the Philippine authorities.” His comments also came as the U.S.-led coalition fighting the Islamic State group announced the Philippines had joined it. The Philippines’ ambassador to Kuwait, Renato Villa, told The Associated Press on Tuesday he welcomed the Kuwaiti foreign minister’s comments. Kuwait has declared an amnesty for Filipino workers who overstayed their visas and are working to help some 500 workers stuck in the country after a company refused to pay their salaries, Villa said. Kuwaiti police also are offering details on Filipino killings to his diplomats. Villa offered a much higher number of Filipino workers in Kuwait — 250,000 — and said 65 percent were domestic workers. “They are the most vulnerable, the domestic workers,” he said.-JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press

Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A Florida man had to call 911 after the gas pedal of his car got stuck while going nearly 100 miles per hour down a busy Florida highway. “I think my gas pedal is stuck on my car and I’m on I-95,” Joseph Cooper, 28, said in a frantic call to 911 as his car bolted down the highway in Indian River County on Florida’s east coast. When the 911 employee asked Cooper if he tried the emergency brake, he nixed that suggestion. “Ma’am, I’m not going to do that at 100 mph, I’m sorry,” Cooper said, according to a recording of the call obtained by Vero News. Attempts to put the car in neutral and decelerate didn’t work. “Get out the way!” Cooper says on the recording as he shouted at other drivers. As Cooper’s black 2003 BMW X5 sped down the I-95 highway, Florida Highway Patrol troopers and Fellsmere Police Department officers were able to clear traffic in front of him and then put spikes on the road to deflate his tires. Once the car’s tired were blown out and its speed decreased, troopers were able to bring it to a halt with a PIT maneuver. Cooper drove approximately 50 miles with his gas pedal stuck before his car was finally stopped. It’s not clear what caused the pedal mishap. No serious injuries were reported. But after the incident was over, Cooper complained of chest pains and was taken to a nearby hospital.-By Ray Downs
Arizona woman suffers headache, wakes up with British accent Feb. 12 (UPI) -An Arizona woman who has woken up with different accents three times in the past seven years said doctors traced the unusual condition to a rare disease. Michelle Myers, a former beauty queen and mother of seven from Buckeye, said she has never even left the United States, but she woke from a headache-induced nap about seven years ago to find she was speaking with an Irish accent. Myers said the accent lasted about a week, but about three years later the same thing happened again and she woke with an Australian accent, which also lasted about a week. Myers said she suffered a headache so severe in 2015 that her right eye went temporarily blind and she couldn’t move the left side of her body. She was taken to the emergency room, where she woke up with a British accent that has been with her ever since. “Everybody only sees or hears Mary Poppins,” Myers told KNXV-TV. “They send in the psychiatrist at the hospital and make sure you’re not a loon.” Doctors said Myers isn’t “a loon” and she isn’t faking it, she has a condition called Foreign Accent Syndrome, which usually follows a stroke or other condition that causes neurological damage. Myers suffers from a condition known as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which includes rupturing blood vessels, easy bruising and painful joints. “When I was a little girl I used to always go to my mom and say, ‘my bones hurt,” Myers said. The former Miss Black Austin Texas said the condition has changed the way she pronounces her children’s names. “I’m sad,” she said of recalling how she used to speak. “I feel like a different person. The person I am now has been through so much compared to this person.” Myers said she wants peopled to take her condition seriously. “Some people think it’s physiological; others think it’s psychological. People like me -- we don’t care which one it is. We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that’s going to hurt me, help me.”-By Ben Hooper

Money only buys happiness for sci-tech a certain amount
There is an optimal point to how much money it takes to make an individual happy, and that amount varies worldwide, according to research from Purdue University. “That might be surprising as what we see on TV and what advertisers tell us we need would indicate that there is no ceiling when it comes to how much money is needed for happiness, but we now see there are some thresholds,” said Andrew T. Jebb, the lead author and doctoral student in the Department of Psychological Sciences. “It’s been debated at what point does money no longer change your level of well-being. We found that the ideal income point is $95,000 for life evaluation and $60,000 to $75,000 for emotional well-being. Again, this amount is for individuals and would likely be higher for families.” Emotional well-being, or feelings, is about one’s day-to-day emotions, such as feeling happy, excited, or sad and angry. Life evaluation, really life satisfaction, is an overall assessment of how one is doing and is likely more influenced by higher goals and comparisons to others. “And, there was substantial variation across world regions, with satiation occurring later in wealthier regions for life satisfaction,” Jebb said. “This could
be because evaluations tend to be more influenced by the standards by which individuals compare themselves to other people.” Jebb’s area of expertise is in industrial-organizational psychology. The senior author on the paper is Louis Tay, an assistant professor of psychological sciences. The research is published in Nature Human Behaviour. The research is based on data from the Gallup World Poll, which is a representative survey sample of more than 1.7 million individuals from 164 countries, and the estimates were averaged based on purchasing power and questions relating to life satisfaction and well-being. For reporting this study, the amounts are reported in U.S. dollars, and the data is per individual, not family. The study also found once the threshold was reached, further increases in income tended to be associated with reduced life satisfaction and a lower level of well-being. This may be because money is important for meeting basic needs, purchasing conveniences, and maybe even loan repayments, but to a point. After the optimal point of needs is met, people may be driven by desires such as pursuing more material gains and engaging in social comparisons, which could, ironically, lower well-being. “At this point they are asking themselves, ‘Overall, how am I doing?’ and ‘How do I compare

China Telecom’s options: Third force or partner with Globe, PLDT MANILA - China Telecom can partner with either Globe Telecom or PLDT Inc, or help establish a third player, should it decide to push through with its investment in the Philippines, a regulator said Thursday. Should the Beijing-based carrier forge joint ventures with the two dominant players in the Philippines, it would have to surrender frequencies meant for the third telecommunications firm, said Eliseo Rio, officer in charge of the Department of Information and Communications Technology. “China Telecom will have to choose, third player or Globe or PLDT,” Rio said at a Senate hearing on proposals to revise foreign ownership restrictions in public utilities. PLDT, Globe challengers seek more time to firm up businesses Foreign companies are lim-
ited to 40 percent ownership of public utilities, including telecommunications firms. Analysts said such restrictions were partly to blame for poor service. Easing the restriction will allow the Ayala-owned telco to seek more foreign capital, Globe director for policy Ariel Tubayan told the same hearing. The DICT is overseeing the selection process for a third carrier, which President Rodrigo Duterte wants up and running early this year. A representative from the United Nations special agency for Communications Technology will be in Manila next week to help the Philippine government in the selection process. These findings speak to a broader issue of money and happiness across cultures. Cimatu orders 300 business establishments in Boracay closed ter Act and failed to connect ... waste water to the sewage system,” Cimatu told GMA News Online. The closure order is not yet final. Cimatu gave the business establishments in Boracay two months to comply with environmental provisions of the law. Environment Undersecretary Jonas Leones said business establishments may appeal the order and they will be given time to address their own shortcomings. “If they failed to address their violations, the Pollution and Adjudication Board will issue a cease and desist order,” Leones said.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) needs to fast-track the process of deciding and investigating the erring business in the island to meet the deadline set by Duterte. During the Manila Times’ Business Forum in Davao City on Friday, Duterte threatened to shut down Boracay if the environmental issues are not addressed in six months. He said it was a “cesspool.” During the Cabinet meeting on February 5, Duterte approved “in principle” the creation of a DENR-led task force to address the problems of Boracay within the prescribed period. Peso weakest in over 11 years MANILA, Philippines — The peso continued its downtrend yesterday, touching the 52 to $1 level during intraday trading amid the impending increase in US interet rates. The local currency shed 21 centavos to plunge to its weakest level in more than 11 years as it closed at 51.98 to $1 from Monday’s 51.77 to $1. This was its lowest level since closing at 52.165 to $1 on July 21, 2006. The peso opened weaker at 51.93 and even touched an intraday low of 52 before rallying to an intraday high of 51.84. Traders said the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) was active in the market to smoothen the volatility as the volume went up 9.9 percent to $1.02 billion yesterday from $930.6 million last Monday. Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co. said in its daily view from the Metro the break of the 51.7 to $1 would open up the topside range targeting the 52 to $1 level. Another trader said investors are awaiting the release of the January inflation in the US that would signal the tightening moves of the US central bank. The US Fed has penned three rate increases this year, matching the number of rate hikes last year. Analysts believe the US Fed would deliver its first rate hike for this year next month while the BSP’s Monetary Board would also be prompted to hike rates also in March. The BSP kept interest rates untouched last week, but raised its inflation forecasts to 4.3 instead of 3.4 percent for this year and to 3.5 instead of 3.2 percent for next year. The central bank has set an inflation target range of two to four percent between 2018 and 2020. Philstar

Entertainment Lim on spending Beauty Xian Valentine’s Day with overload: Kim Chiu: ‘I’ve always loved surprising her” Liza, Julia have movie night out
What’s the BUZZ?
MANILA - Liza Soberano and Julia Barretto, considered among the most beautiful faces and in-demand stars in local showbiz, are also good friends in real life. The two leading ladies were spotted having a movie date on Monday night at a mall in Ortigas. They watched the premiere screening of “My Fairy Tail Love Story,” which stars another close friend of theirs, Janella Salvador. “Janella asked us personally to come here and support her,” Soberano told ABS-CBN News’ Mario Dumaual on the sidelines of the premiere night. “She’s a very good friend of ours, so of course we would go all the way out for her.” Barretto added: “This is our way of showing our support for her, and we’re very excited for her. Maraming pangarap si Janella. We’re happy natupad ‘to.” Soberano, Barretto, and Salvador were all part of the same batch of Star Magic artists launched in 2013, along with the likes of Jane Oineza, Khalil Ramos, and Michelle Vito. Xian Lim shares a bolder, sexier image in Star Cinema’s Valentine’s day offering ‘Sin Island’. With Valentine’s Day happening this week, Xian Lim admitted he still has to come up with plans for his date this year with Kim Chiu. “Wala pa akong plano eh. Un nga ang mahirap wala pa akong plano. Mahilig talaga ako sa grand gestures. I think growing up watching romantic comedy films and doing romantic films parang nasa loob ko talaga siya eh. Kasi ang dami din naming screenings and stuff but defintiely hindi mawawala yun,” he shared during the Sin Island presscon held last February 12 inside the ABS-CBN compound. Two years ago, the Sin Island star took Kim on a whole day outdoor date which included a hot air balloon ride and go-kart racing. Xian said it will be a challenge to top that date but he does not want to repeat the same activities. The two have been each other’s Valentine date ever since they first got paired together in My Binondo Girl. “I have thing na hindi ko inuulit (yung date) I think dapat never inuulit dapat gumagawa ka palagi ng bago di ba? Kasi yung mga may grand gestures na date I think around six years na? Since Binondo Girl nagkatrabaho kami I’ve always loved surprising her and seeing her reaction ” he admitted. Even though he will be busy promoting his movie’s opening day on February 14, Xian said he does not want to entertain the thought of not celebrating with Kim this year and said he already invited her to watch Sin Island with him. “Wala namang ganun. Siyempre we love spending time with each other. Wala kaming ganung negativity na iniisip. Ininvite ko na siya manuod. But sabi naman niya oo naman papanuorin niya pag libre yung schedule niya nag-shu-shooting din siya this time,” he shared. Even though they are working on separate projects at the moment, Xian said that he and Kim will always be supportive of each other’s career. “Because sa amin talaga, we just really support each other. We do talk about it, nagkukuwentuhan kami but that’s all we can do talaga eh. And sa mundo namin the best gift you can possibly give is your time and your support for each other, yun lang talaga eh,” he added.-BY RHEA MANILA SANTOS

THE OFFICE ASSISTANT’S GUIDE TO MULTI-TASKING:
3 KEYS TO JUGGLING TASKS LIKE A PRO
W
hen most people think about the challenges of running an office, the very first thing that comes to mind is multitasking.
Offices are hubs of activity. They are the nerve centre of every company, small business, government agency, and community organization. Offices are, by definition, busy environments where employees coordinate projects, hold meetings, pitch ideas, and carry out routine operations. It’s normal for tasks, schedules, and priorities to collide as each individual works toward their own goals for the day. Who is responsible for sorting it all out, and ensuring the office runs as smoothly as possible? The administrative team. Administrative assistants, receptionists, and office managers need exceptional multi-tasking skills. But what does effective multi-tasking actually look like? What core skills and characteristics does an office assistant need to juggle tasks effectively? Let’s break down the 3 keys to managing requests, assignments, and last-minute demands that land on your desk - all at the same time. FIRST OF ALL, MULTI-TASKING ISN’T WHAT YOU THINK... Before we begin, we should take a moment to clarify exactly what “multi-tasking” means. It’s not about doing tasks at the same time. This is actually a terrible idea, and almost always leads to disaster (think: talking on the phone while writing an email, or proof-reading an important document while scheduling appointments for your boss - no good can come of this!) Multi-tasking in an office environment is about carefully shifting your attention from one task to another, not splitting your focus between many things at the same time. If you’re bouncing randomly between jobs, something is bound to go awry. That’s not multi-tasking—that’s panicking! Here are some practical strategies for shifting between tasks without missing a beat (or losing your mind). GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT: RANK COMPETING TASKS BY ORDER OF IMPORTANCE This is the number one rule of task-juggling for office assistants. For example, let’s say you’re sitting at recep-
tion, and four things happen at the same time: a client arrives for a meeting and approaches your desk the phone rings you receive an email request to print some documents for the meeting that’s about to happen the mail arrives, ready for you to sort and distribute. Which of these events demands your immediate attention, and which can wait until later? Knowing how to rank incoming requests by order of importance is one of the central pillars of good multi-tasking. Before leaping into action, take a second to get your priorities straight, and decide which move you’ll make first. GROUP SIMILAR TASKS TOGETHER TO MAINTAIN CONTINUITY Let’s say you have a large pile of work on your desk. Or, a jumble of email requests sitting in your inbox. Simply figuring out where to begin can be a major challenge. In addition to considering priority, it’s a smart idea to group related tasks together. This is an efficient way to quickly sort your work, and maintain a sense of continuity while working on each “group” of tasks. For example, you might put tasks related to a particular client in one group. Or pull together requests related to an upcoming meeting or corporate event you’ll have to organize. The advantage to this system? While you work on each task group, you’ll have an easier time remembering all of the facts and details relevant to that group— rather than bouncing back and forth between unrelated tasks, and having to “recalibrate” your brain every time. USE A TO-DO LIST AND KEEP IT VISIBLE Never underestimate the importance of a to-do list when you work in office admin! You might believe you can remember important dates, requests, and tasks—but without a list, something will always fall through
the cracks. Your list can be digital or on paper, but it should always be in a highly visible place (a pad of paper on your desk, or an open Word document on your computer). You’ll want to sort your to-do list by priority, with a dedicated section for daily, routine tasks, and a separate area for upcoming deadlines and special assignments. Some kind of colour-coding system is also a good idea, so you highlight items by priority. Remember: you can’t be everywhere at once. But, you can prioritize, sort, and keep track of pending tasks to avoid panic, and divide your time wisely. As you settle into your first position after office assistant training, you can use these techniques to create your own multi-tasking management system—and keep improving it as you gain experience. You’ll be juggling tasks like a pro in no time. Interested in learning more about office assistant training? Looking for a top-rated office administrator college in Winnipeg? Is Sharon Cuneta’s trending tell-all just a publicity stunt? MANILA, Philippines — Singer-actress Sharon Cuneta was in the mood to answer questions from netizens on how her love life went these past few decades, hoping she could end speculations and set the record straight. In a trending Facebook post by a netizen, the netizen wrote a theory wherein she said that Sharon “wanted the wedding (with Gabby) for respectability purposes because she was pregnant.” Sharon, commenting as April Mondragon, surprised netizens and joined the discussion: “I was not NOT pregnant when Gabby asked me to marry him. It was at the backstage of Araneta Coliseum in July 1984 at the dress rehearsals for my two-night concert… He already had the rings and I almost fell down the stage and sinalubong niya ako pababa ako.” The Megastar continued to reveal what happened that night. According to her, she and Gabby Concepcion first had a secret wedding a few days after the engagement. “My only fear about being found out was that my Daddy might have a heart attack. He didn’t but he did go on a hunger strike when I anonymously mailed him a copy of our civil wedding contract.” Sharon also recounted the
other men in her life, beginning with Albert Martinez, who she described as “her puppy love,” followed by her first real love, Gabby. “Then Rowell. Back to Gabby. After the marriage ended, someone nonshowbiz, J na lang I will call him. Then Richard. Robin. Richard. Nonshowbiz C., then Richard again. Kiko. And Robin in between all the Richard time frames and everyone else’s somewhere too. Let’s just say that great love begins with R.” Another netizen barged into the conversation, alleging that Kiko Pangilinan cheated on Sharon. “Nakaka WTF NANAMALIN KA BA bg very very strong. Wag kayong maniwala sa chismis na lapitin ng babae si Kiko,” Sharon said on the thread as a defense. The Megastar stressed that her husband has never cheated on her, adding that she is smart and she trusts her ever-reliable intuition. “No one has ever come forward with solid proof even after my offer of 10 million pesos to anyone who could give me proof… Oh please. I’m too special for my husband to look elsewhere.” Again, the netizen attacked Kiko, saying he is the reason why Sharon freaked out on Twitter in 2012.
Sharon then replied: “Hindi po kasalanan ni Kiko. Kasalanan ng nagbreak ng heart ni KC.” “Di pa kasi ako sanay sa bashers noon na matapang lang nga naman kasi di mo sila kilala. In private to tell you the truth, I would beat up any basher na walang balak
sa buhay kundi manira ng kapwa at puro pagsisinungaling lang.” Some netizens question the timing of this Facebook thread, making some speculate that it is just an extended attempt to hype up Sharon and Gabby’s TV commercial for a fast food chain.
Others, meanwhile, think that it is a way for supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte to use the issue to attack the Liberal Party, to which Sharon’s husband belongs to, and since the netizen who started the thread and others who commented there are die-hard Duterte supporters. Philstar

God wants us to be satisfied, but He wants us to be satisfied in that which is satisfactory. HE is the satisfactory One. As John Piper tells us, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” How can we find satisfaction? Listen to the prophet Isaiah chapter 55 verse 1: “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”
The first step to satisfaction is dissatisfaction. To be satisfied, we first have to be unsatisfied. To be filled, we first have to be empty. To have our thirst quenched, we first have to be thirsty. ARLIER this month there was a story about how the Philippines was going to be purchasing a number of brand new Bell helicopters from Canada. Like many others, I kind of felt good about the story. S long as murders are being not only investigated but also solved with the arrest, conviction and imprisonment of the perpetrators, there is no reason for intervention by any international body to stop the killings and give justice to the victims. Without the solution of crimes and punishment of murderers, impunity will reign, and give the impression that the state is unwilling or unable to stop the systematic violation of human rights, particularly extrajudicial killings.
Drug personalities, however, aren’t the only ones who have been targeted. Environmental advocates are also being killed, making the Philippines the second deadliest country for such activists in 2017. This is according to London-based non-government organization Global Witness, which campaigns against environmental abuse and its links to corruption, conflict and poverty.

Take a STAND
With 41 killings related to land and environment activism last year, the Philippines worsened from third place in 2016 to become the second deadliest country for environmental activists in 2017. NGOs in the Philippines pointed to the killings of lumads or minorities opposing mostly mining and agribusiness interests as the reason for the deterioration in the country’s ranking. The Philippines has also consistently ranked among the five most dangerous countries for journalists, according to the annual Impunity Index drawn up by the US-based Committee to Protect Journalists. The impunity inevitably raises suspicions that state forces and politicians with control over various aspects of the criminal justice system are behind many of the killings. This gives the impression that the system is broken and incapable of bringing justice to the people. Only the arrest and successful prosecution and punishment of murderers will prove the critics wrong.Philstar

ov e r n m e n t m u s t proceed with care in “crushing” the communist fronts of the “terrorist” New People’s Army. It no longer is a crime to be a communist. The repeal of the Anti-Subversion Law, R.A. 1700, saw to that. It was one of the first acts of the Ramos administration in 1992. As a result, communist sympathizers joined the “parliamentary struggle” by running for congressional seats. To a large extent, they forsook armed revolution. Before that the Cold Warinspired law had been used to hound duly elected Communists from Congress and the academe. It took the enlightened tenure of a former military general to figure out that one cannot legislate thinking. Today the government can ill afford to crack down on Leftthinking groups on mere suspicion of communist leanings. Such suppression would only multiply their numbers, just as stifling of Christians by the Romans only further spread the religion outside the borders. What the government can go
As for Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison, the government can take action. His latest call from selfexile in The Netherlands for the NPA to slay one soldier or policeman per day can be classified as terroristic. after are NPA rebels who actually participate in criminal acts: murder, arms procurement, kidnapping, serious illegal detention, extortion – even robbery in band of houses meant for soldiers and policemen. Those who merely advocate “to each according to his ability, to each according to his need” should be tolerated as a matter of free speech and expression. At worse they can only be called dreamers, as in John Lennon’s “Imagine.” As for Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison, the government can take action. His latest call from self-exile in The Netherlands for the NPA to slay one soldier or policeman per day can be classified as terroristic. More so since the usual targets are off-duty servicemen on the way home, or in civvies unarmed to buy food at the wet
market. The foreign office can ask the Dutch government to censure and perhaps expel Sison for breaking European laws and the terms of his asylum. On the other hand, bothering with Sison might accord the ageing revolutionist undue importance. Besides, European leaders also picture President Rodrigo Duterte as a terrorist too, because of the thousands of suspected drug pushers and users killed in his drug war. ***

doubt if the water anywhere around Boracay has deteriorated to such an extent.
Boracay residents prefer to see benign green algae that comes out during summer, fed by sunlight and higher nutrient levels. We can’t be sure if Duterte is exaggerating the pollution problem or if the residents are in denial. But a number of neutral observers have also expressed concern in recent years about the pollution in Boracay. Perhaps the truth is somewhere in between. Aquatic experts say green algae is largely beneficial, serving as food for various organisms. The experts say that Taal Lake’s bed of black volcanic soil, which traps sunlight, produces a rare algae that serves as food for fish and plankton. The lake ecosystem, said to be unique in the world, turns talakitok or freshwater trevally into succulent maliputo and makes all fish species in the lake taste exceptionally delectable. The literature on blue-green algae, on the other hand, can be scary enough to make you cry cholera. Its common name, pond scum, says a lot about this organism. Blue-green algae or cyanobacteria are, as the name implies, colored bluish-green, but they can also be blue, or brown, or reddish purple, or green, which can make people confuse the organism with green algae.
For sure the President realizes the negative impact of his words on Boracay, which makes about P56 billion annually from tourism.
SKETCHES Cyanobacteria are blamed for red tide and release toxins that can cause diarrhea if ingested plus all the other afflictions associated with pond scum. But certain types of cyanobacteria have reportedly been found to be effective against viral afflictions including HIV and herpes. The anti-oxidant health supplement spirulina is a cyanobacterium. Both green and blue-green algae thrive on sunlight and tropical heat, so Boracay residents are telling the truth when they point out that whatever algae is spotted on the island’s shores appears only during summer. There is no green algae during the rainy season, they say, and in fact algae growth is seen as a sure sign that summer has arrived. So, they ask, how can it be caused by sewage? *** My idea of cyanobacteria is the greenish-black scum that we see in Metro Manila’s heavily polluted creeks, stinky and vile-looking, and made even more horrible by an occasional floating corpse or aborted fetus. Those are natural cesspools. I
According to previous reports and file photos, the green algae is usually most visible at the Boracay station where the majority of commercial establishments are located. Administration officials say of about 150 commercial establishments on the island, only 25 are connected to the sewerage system. The rest, along with many residential homes, reportedly spew their sewage directly into the sea – the reason for Duterte’s complaint that the island smells like “s***.” Aquatic experts both local and foreign have been warning for some time that the island needs to upgrade its sewage treatment system as Boracay tourism booms and its population, currently at 50,000, continues to surge. Combined with its visitor arrivals of two million last year, the island has been overwhelmed since 2010. Regular Boracay visitors have been complaining for some time now that the island has become overdeveloped. The sewage and other pollution problems, they grouse, are just among the consequences of unplanned and poorly regulated development. Business establishments have also been built too close to roads and the sea.
*** For sure the President realizes the negative impact of his words on Boracay, which makes about P56 billion annually from tourism. But he’s also correct in saying that the cleanup will be good for the long-term viability of the island and the health of its residents and guests. Since he’s started it, Duterte might as well set his sights on other top tourist destinations. Baguio City, where I lived for three years as a kid, is a lamentable example of unplanned development. Its pine trees are depleted and its once scenic slopes look like the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. A powerful earthquake can cause horrific deaths in Baguio. Session Road looks like the commercial alleys of Quiapo. The city isn’t a cesspool, but it smells like EDSA on payday Friday. Bontoc, once postcard-pretty, is rapidly going the same way. And in Banaue, the panoramic view along the ridge leading to the town center is now blocked by nondescript houses and other structures. Tagaytay is also in danger of overdevelopment. It’s the same sad story all over the country. Once an area becomes a popular travel destination, the big developers come in, snapping up the most strategic spots and ruining the view. Zoning is unheard of in this country. We don’t have to look
far. Bonifacio Global City was supposed to be a model for sustainable urban development, but now it’s turning into just another crowded commercial enclave in Metro Manila, prosperous, but one of the most unsustainable megacities in the world. Every inch of space, vertical and horizontal, has to be maximized for profit. Some of the early settlers in BGC still provide breathing space in the area with their low-rise structures on spacious grounds. At least one has told me, however, that their property is relentlessly pursued by developers, with the latest purchase offer being made only recently. *** Duterte has given Boracay government officials and private stakeholders six months to clean up or the island will be closed to tourism. Upgrading the island’s sewerage system and requiring all commercial establishments and homes to be connected to it are reasonable demands. What’s uncertain is whether this can be accomplished in six months. To speed things up, perhaps the national government and private stakeholders can provide more support to the Boracay government in infrastructure construction. Aid and multilateral organizations can be tapped to advise local officials on sustainable development. Many other quarters have sounded the alarm: unless Boracay cleans up, it will become Paradise Lost. It’s not too late to reverse the trend. Philstar

Angelica Panganiban
comments on ex-boyfriend:
‘Di naman to gwapo’
Ever blunt actress Angelica Panganiban has once again shocked many with her recent revelations about an ex-boyfriend of hers. In an interview with Philstar’s Supreme, the Ang Dalawang Mrs. Reyes star shared that she and her ex-boyfriend never really broke up. “Yung pinakamalala yung ‘di ka brineakan tapos ikaw parang, ha? Akala ko tayo? Tapos kung gusto mo mang kausapin, di mo mahagilap, di mo makausap,” she shared. That incident, according to her, has pushed her to move on saying that “Break up na siguro yun?” When joked that the guy probably has no mobile signal, the Hugot Queen laughed and said, “Mukhang may signal naman siya kasi may mga videos na lumabas na nasa island sila, sumasayaw sila, mga bangag sila. So sabi ko sila na siguro, ‘di lang ako na-inform.” Even though she didn’t name the ex-boyfriend that she was pertaining to, Angelica dropped obvious hints as to who he was.
“Yung iniisip mo na, ‘T*****a, hindi naman to gwapo ah.’ Yun ang tagal mong iniyakan, ang tagal mong pinagsilbihan, ang dami mong inadjust at kinalimutang mga tao o paniniwala sa buhay tapos talaga? Ikaw pa yung iiwan? Lapad ng noo mo, ‘day!” she exclaims with a laugh. Although she’s not necessarily averse to the idea of getting a closure, Angelica proudly shared that she has now moved forward from that trying moment in her life. “Wala na. Hinihintay ko na lang yung buong pagpapatawad. Hindi ko lang pwedeng madaliin, tsaka hindi mo pwedeng ibigay yung tawad sa taong hindi humihingi ng tawad,” she said. But on another end, Angelica is well aware that forgiving someone despite the absence of an apology is really important in moving forward. “Kasi doon ka gagaan, kapag ni-release mo sa sarili mo yung bigat. Hindi yun para sa ibang tao, para sa sarili ko lang yun. Para matapos na,” she said. The Banana Sundae star’s ultimate goal is to be able to get back her old
happy smile and to be able to embrace romance again—even as a concept as of the moment. “Gusto ko yung pag nakita ko yung billboard niya, hindi nako namamakyu. Gusto ko yung para na lang siyang dumaan,” she said. “Dahan-dahan na akong nagigising ulit na gusto kong naka-smile, iniisip kung anong lulutuin ko para sa taong mahal ko, padadalhan ko siya ng pagkain sa work, ganun. May mga ganun na ako ulit, kasi the past few months talagang p******a, never again. Di na ako bitter sa mga proposals, kaya ko na ulit manood ng romcom sa Netflix.” -BY PUSH TEAM
It may be recalled that Angelica is last known to be in a relationship with John Lloyd Cruz who is now said to be in a relationship with Ellen Adarna. Reports even have it that Ellen is currently pregnant with John Lloyd’s child.-BY PUSH TEAM

KZ Tandingan represents the Philippines in China’s “Singer 2018”
Soul singer, composer, and recording artist KZ Tandingan marks her debut on the global stage as she goes up against international music stars in the hit Chinese singing competition, “Singer 2018”, on Friday (February 9). KZ, who rose to fame in the Philippines after winning the local version of “The X Factor”, joins “Singer 2018” in its current season’s fifth episode, following three consecutive weeks that saw British singer Jessie J as the audience favorite. “Singer 2018” is China’s most popular reality TV singing competition and pits professional singers from around the world against each other, as they vie to win audience votes. The votes decide each week’s winner and eliminated contestant. Following the eliminations, the show introduces a new challenger. KZ is up against Taiwanese pop singers Angela Chang and Sam Lee this season, while former contestants of the competition include Chinese-American pop star Coco
Mark Bautista’s
Lee and Hong Kong singer Sandy Lam. The Filipina singer is currently a mainstay alongside some of the most popular artists in the country on the Philippines’ top-rating variety show “ASAP”, which airs on ABS-CBN TFC online worldwide. She has also released two albums under ABS-CBN’s record label Star Music. After her win on “The X Factor Philippines”, KZ went on to achieve success as both a singer and composer and became known as the “Soul Supreme” with chart-topping hits such as “Mahal Ko o Mahal Ako (I Love or I’m Loved)” and “Huwag Ka Nang Umiyak (Don’t Cry Anymore)”. She has conquered TV and stages all around the world, with stints as a contestant in the Philippine edition of “Your Face Sounds Familiar” and a

In a separate interview with reporters on Tuesday, Cimatu said he will do his best to resolve the problem within six months. “Kakayanin ko talaga kagaya rin ng estudyante kung binigyan sila ng oras na magawa,‘finished or unfinished pass your paper’. Parang ganun lang naman sa ‘kin ang gagawin. I have to do my best to complete it in six months,” he said. In a separate statement, Cimatu noted 50 to 60 percent of all business establishments in Boracay are compliant with Republic Act No. 9275 or the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004. Under RA 9275, businesses and households are mandated to dispose their septic wastes via a treatment facility. In January to October 2017, Boracay island was visited by 1.669 million tourists and generated P46.526 billion in tourism receipts, data from the Aklan Provincial Tourism Office showed. Foreigners and Filipinos who live abroad accounted for P31.769 billion of the tourismrelated revenue, while domestic tourists spent P14.757 billion. —VDS/JST, GMA News
‘bromance’:
Was it with Piolo Pascual? MANILA, Philippines — On February 7, netizens went gaga when excerpts leaked from the upcoming tell-all book by singer-actor Mark Bautista. The book is not just an ordinary tale of the 34-year-old performer’s life. Some juicy details about his private life are hinted to be dished out in his book titled “Beyond the Mark” which the actor swears he personally wrote. One of the chapters in his
book will be tackling about his certain “bromance” with a male friend some years ago. Many see this detail revealing of long-swirling rumors on the singer’s preferences for romance. In the book, Mark admits that he became intimate with a “male friend,” but he left out his name. Speculations that it was actor Piolo Pascual were fueled by another detail Mark dis-
closed: that his “intimacy” with his male friend ended when his girlfriend found out about the close friendship between the two boys. Years ago, Piolo was rumored to have broken up with then-girlfriend KC Concepcion. Sources knowledgeable about the people involved, however, confirmed to Philstar.com that it was not Piolo Pascual that Mark is referring to in his book. While the sourc-
es were mum on the mystery man’s identity, they hinted that he might also be a celebrity. Will Mark personally come out in the open to shed light
on his revelations? As seen on social media, LGBT groups are already welcoming him with open arms.-Apryl Galang/Philstar

TIP SHEET
How to tackle steep slopes when driving a MT car
www.angperyodiko.ca n
Mountain retreats like Baguio City and Tagaytay have steep hills. Away from the main highway, you will encounter residential driveways and commercial establishments that have steep and daunting access roads. When driving into or out of these places, not all of these locations have room for your car to build up speed and momentum, so getting stuck and stranded is a real possibility. But fret not, we are here to make sure that doesn’t happen to you. The following tip is ideally meant for those who still drive a manual-transmission vehicle. Surely there are still a few of you guys left! It is also especially helpful if your car doesn’t pack all that much horsepower and torque. Engines with smaller displacements need to be wrung out more, you see. Here’s a little history that explains why this topic is close to my heart: My house in Baguio has a very steep driveway, and without fail, visitors from the lowlands have had a difficult time getting out of it. Dad would always teach the guests who failed at their first attempt how to do it properly—using the tips enumerated below—and would praise those who actually listened to his instructions. But then there were also stubborn drivers who insisted on doing things their way. Eventually, after countless failed attempts and the acrid smell of a burnt clutch filling the air, dad would command in his booming voice: “Give the keys to Paulo. He will get your car out.” These drivers couldn’t believe that my dad was ordering them to trust a scrawny bespectacled teenager, but they handed the keys over to me anyway. Our driveway already defeated them and flattened their egos. What kind of humiliation could possibly come next? I would get these cars to the top of the driveway effortlessly, of course. My services were required so often, I eventually learned how to tell if a car wasn’t in good running condition, and adjusted my driving accordingly. Looking back, those were always proud moments for me especially as I wasn’t even anywhere near legal driving age yet. My dad trusted me to always get any car over that steep hill. I miss him terribly.
September 1-15, 2015
Here’s how it is done: 1. Make sure the car is ready for the climb. Baguio and Tagaytay are cold places. If the car has been sitting for a few hours, warming up the engine to operating temperature is a must. A cold engine can’t generate the power required. This also explains why my habit of warming up my car before driving off will never die. 2. Utilize every bit of space. We have a garage that cars can back into to gain precious momentum. Think of it as a small runway. Cars with smaller engines require more space to build up the necessary speed, so I would use every inch of that tiny garage. 3. Adjust to the conditions. Sometimes the garage that I use to make buwelo has a car parked in it. To compensate for this, I’d have to take the revs much higher upon takeoff. 4. Raise the revs. Some people aren’t comfortable with hearing engines at the upper reaches of the tachometer. As long as you don’t pin the motor at the redline, the engine will be okay. Depending on how steep the slope is, I suggest launching the car between 4,000rpm-4,500rpm. Anywhere below 3,000rpm just won’t cut it. 5. Release the clutch smoothly. Do not ride it (clutch drive) on the way up. Also, avoid burning rubber upon takeoff. It looks spectacular, but it actually slows you down. Once moving, only depress the clutch if you are sure that the engine will stall and you won’t make it up the hill. Playing with the clutch to raise the revs again will help, but this requires experience to master. Playing with the clutch pedal to get you to the top while the engine is struggling can burn the clutch out. You’ve been warned. 6. If you don’t make it up the hill and the engine stalls…Don’t panic. Be ready to step on the brakes—hard. You don’t want to roll backward and lose control. Raise the handbrake and then start the engine right away. Why?Because the hydrovac of the brake master cylinder doesn’t function when the engine is off, thus, getting the same amount of braking power will require an extreme amount of pedal force. Once the engine is running again, it is also a good idea to shift into reverse and utilize the engine-braking effect as you return to your starting position. Back up very, very slowly.
This is the view looking down. There are much steeper roads out there, but my dad always told our guests: “If you can make it out of my driveway, you can drive anywhere in Baguio.” Our family friends from the lowlands still remember their first visit to the Subido residence, and the sense of pride that came with being able to power out of it.
7. Analyze what just happened before attempting to tackle the hill again. Is the engine cold? Did you maximize the space? Did you give the engine enough revs? Were you riding the clutch on your way up? Is the ground wet and slippery? Is your car in bad shape? All of these factors can come into play. Experienced drivers don’t need these tips, but if you are a new owner who is proudly driving a manual transmission car, I hope my advice is helpful. -By Paulo Rafael Subido

EXCLUSIVE: Enrique Gil reveals exact
moment he fell in love with Liza Soberano
With the television premiere of his much-awaited series Bagani coming up soon, Enrique Gil admitted he might not get the chance to take Liza Soberano out on a date on Valentine’s Day. “Malalaman ko pa mamaya kung vibrant o hindi kasi kung may taping ako para sa Bagani eh di magtratrabaho ako so M-WF-Saturday kami so if ever wala, mas magiging makulay ang buhay ko (laughs). Simple lang gusto ko, simple dinner lang, flowers, yun lang,” he shared during his Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro presscon held last February 13 in Taguig City. After two years of being close to his leading lady Liza Soberano, Quen said that they are more than just friends at this point. “The real score sinasabi ko parang kami na. Pero you know siyempre I respect her lolo. May promise kasi siya sa lolo niya ever since before na kapag at a certain age 23 or 24 puwede na siya mag-boyfriend so I respect that. Yun ang nagpalaki sa kanya. But as I say, where we are right now, okay na ako,” he explained. The 25-year-old Bagani star also shared why Liza stands out for him out of all the women he has met. “Yung pagaalaga niya sa akin. Yan ang hindi ko maipagpapalit kahit ano, how she takes care of me. Maalaga lang siya. Sinasabi ko sa kanya, ‘Alam mo para kang nanay ko.’ Pero I meant it in a good way na compliment siya. Very maalaga,” he said. Quen admitted he was already aware of the fact that Liza had a crush on him even before they started shooting Forevermore. But it was much later during the series when he realized he was falling for her already. “It was when she had a problem in Baguio and when she had that problem I kind of felt bad. I really felt bad and parang I don’t want anybody else to make her feel that way again. Dun ko narealize na ‘Ano ba ‘to? Ano yun?’ I think maybe that’s it,” he told PUSH.-BY RHEA MANILA SANTOS
ABS-CBN AVP & Head of Global Anti-Piracy Elisha Lawrence further warns pirates at ANC Alerts stint Following ABS-CBN’s landmark victory in a legal battle at the tail end of December 2017 against 32 websites that illegally reproduced and distributed its content, ABS-CBN AVP and Head of Global Anti-Piracy Elisha Lawrence (left) bolsters the company’s warning to pirates in a recent interview with Lexi Schulze (RIGHT) on “ANC Alerts”. Lawrence - whose team’s most recent anti-piracy win included a US federal court awarding advertising revenue and ownership of the domain names of the pirate sites to ABS-CBN, a milestone that was featured in TorrentFreak, a leading blog dedicated to copyright, privacy, and filesharing news - said that ABS-CBN is relentlessly advancing its efforts daily. In the interview, Lawrence reveals that ABS-CBN’s anti-piracy efforts have extended the long arm of the law. ABS-CBN has become the first media and entertainment network in the world to put content pirates into jail in China. Lawrence reminded viewers about the anti-piracy
campaign message, “Don’t pay a high price for free”, because according to her, getting the content for free by clicking on these pirate sites also means getting malware where pirates are able to have full access to your personal data (banking information, passwords, private emails, etc.) from your computer, phone, ipad and other devices. In addition, the pirate’s violation of intellectual property rights affects the bottom line of the company, because distributing the movies on to the internet while they are still in the theaters substantially affects theatrical revenue which in turn puts at risk the livelihoods of all the ABS-CBN employees who are involved in all aspects of producing these movies and daily TV shows. As a result, she is passionate about protecting the public against being victimized by malware as well as protecting the livelihoods of ABS-CBN employees and their families. “I am going after everyone. Let all pirates be warned”, Lawrence cautioned.

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, Angel Locsin
and Neil Arce become a couple
They’ve been very open about their feelings for one another, with Angel Locsin saying that he was the “best part” of her 2017. And now, the “Pilipinas Got Talent” judge has finally confirmed that she and movie producer Neil Arce have taken their relationship up another notch. “Yes, we’re together,” she told PEP. She shared that she and Arce became a couple just this month. She also described their relationship as similar to that of close friends, and that they’re in no rush to get married. “Right now we are taking our time,” she said. “Siguro sobrang take our time, ganun, pero sobrang ini-enjoy pa lang namin. I’m just happy na nandiyan siya sa tabi ko.” Locsin has been friends with Arce for 7 years. But it was only last October when she first opened up about their possible romance. She explained that she’s hesitant to enter a romantic relationship with Arce because she doesn’t want to ruin their friendship. In her New Year’s message to Arce, she said: “Falling in love with you was the best part of my 2017. Excited to share my 2018 with you.”ABS-CBN News
‘Don’t ever leave again,’ KC tells dad Gabby MANILA - KC Concepcion, the only daughter of screen veterans Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion, made public a message for her father following the onscreen reunion of her parents. The 32-year-old actress left the comment on her father’s Instagram selfie with Cuneta, taken during the shoot of the now-viral McDonald’s commercial ad featuring the former couple. “Don’t ever leave again,” Concepcion wrote. In another post of her father showing a video of him with Cuneta, Concepcion noted a similarity between her parents, saying, “Papa always videoing priceless moments, like Mama.” Her comments caught the attention of Gabby’s thousands of followers, with many expressing happiness for their family. Cuneta was also among those who saw her daughter’s comments, prompting her to reply. “That’s true,” Cuneta said, referring to her and Gabby frequently taking videos, “and you better thank us [because] you have so many photos of your
lifetime because of us two! And your work.” “But your Papi was so having fun selfie-ing his selfies! Cutie like you mija! I diezvente you so much, Qwisteena,” the veteran singer added, using a term that was formerly a code for “I love you” between her and Gabby. Considered as one of the most popular “love teams” in the ‘80s, Concepcion and Cuneta’s onscreen romance bled into real life, paving the way for their 1984 wedding. A year later, they welcomed their only child, The couple, however, eventually separated. Their marriage was annulled, and they have both re-married. 18 www.angperyodiko.ca February 16-28, 2018 RUNNING is one of many ways to train the heart. Not only it targets the heart muscle but it targets the whole cardiovascular system. Cardiovascular or circulatory system consists of the heart and major blood vessels. The heart pumps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood to and from the body morning, day and night. This is why it is important to have a healthy heart. If you are getting bored with your treadmill runs, there are various programs you can follow to keep your cardio workout exciting. In this article there are five different options on how you can mix-up your treadmill workout.
1. Do not use handrail
Mix-up your treadmill workout:
Running or walking on the treadmill without using the handrail is much more challenging. It will allow your upper body to get involved by swinging your arms and therefore increasing the intensity of your workout. It will also keep your posture upright while running or walking.
2. Side-to-side and jogging backwards If you haven’t tried it yet, change your directions once in a while to use other muscle groups. Step on each sides of the treadmill before repositioning. Slowly start with shuffling side-to-side until you’re comfortable then do the same with jogging backwards. Be sure to decrease your speed first if trying for the first time.
3. Intervals
It’s good for your heart
One of the favorite programs I like to do on the treadmill is interval training. After running on a steady pace for 20 minutes, you can increase the speed until you are sprinting and sprint hard for 2 minutes then decrease to a comfortable speed (walk or slow jog) for 1 minute. Perform the sprint and rest cycle 10 times. This interval is like sprinting towards the end of your run. Don’t forget to do a cool down at the end of the workout.
4. Bump up the incline and speed Depending on your fitness level, you can increase the incline as if you’re walking or running uphill. Also, you can increase your speed to run on a steady pace. Allow your body to adapt to the new parameters (speed/incline) before adjusting or increasing to new parameters.
5. Use one of the treadmill’s set programs There are a lot of programs in most of the treadmill models that are challenging. There are hill runs, duration runs, intervals and more that are easy to follow once you are ready to increase your intensity. Before trying any of these programs, be sure to warm-up to prepare the body for the endurance workout. Also, do not forget to perform a cool down after every workout to avoid blood pooling in the body. Allow your heart to return to a normal rate before stepping down from the treadmill. There are other cardiovascular workouts that you can perform other than running like, swimming, walking, rowing, cycling and almost all sports.Whether you’re running on the treadmill or swimming, you are working towards maintaining your healthy heart.

Isaiah Thomas reportedly has ‘absolutely no love at all’ for LeBron James
19 Ang Peryodiko
The Isaiah Thomas era in Cleveland was pretty short-lived, and that might be for the best. Thomas was a member of the Cavaliers since the beginning of the season, but after failing to play well throughout January upon his return from a hip injury, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in a trade deadline roster overhaul for the Cavs. The guard was critical of many things while with Cleveland, and it never appeared he and James were a great match on the court, but that may be for good reason. It sounds like that’s because Thomas felt LeBron often was talking down to him, according to FOX Sports 1’s Chris Broussard. “I was talking to somebody yesterday close to Isaiah, and they said he has absolutely no love at all for LeBron, like this is real,” Broussard said Tuesday on Undisputed. “He felt like LeBron kind of talked down to him when he was there and so on and so forth. And when Isaiah first got (to Cleveland) they actually were hanging out a little bit and it was cool, but it soured pretty quickly.” Interestingly, in Thomas’ final game with Cleveland, LeBron hit a buzzer-beater that led to quite a bit of on-court jubilation amongst the Cavs. As that was taking place, however, it appeared LeBron deliberately ignored Thomas. Whether or not that’s the case, Thomas now is in Los Angeles and far away from whatever tension existed between him and James.-by Logan Mullen
Same old problem hounds Gilas MANILA, Philippines – The countdown to Gilas’ first game in the second FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers window is down to single digits, but the same problem persists. Personnel issues continue to hound the national team a few days away from the its game against the highly touted Aussies. “You know, [the personnel problem] derailed that plan again,” head coach Chot Reyes told reporters during the second edition of Gilas’ training at the Meralco Gym in Pasig on Tuesday night. “We go on a day-to-day basis ... something always comes up. May bagong nai-injure, nagkakasakit, meron namang may ibang laro sa iba,” the veteran tactician said. “Si Kiefer (Ravena) may sakit .. We were really looking forward to having CJ Perez and Robert Bolick come in more full time with us. Unfortunately, meron naman silang PCCL tournament.” But if it’s any consolation, at least forward Troy Rosario is back. But even that comes with a catch.
“He’s cleared to practice,” Reyes said of the TNT cager. “But he’s really not cleared to play. He’s cleared to do some light workouts, shooting drills but not really full contact.”
“But not really [cleared for] full contact (trainings), so you know, we’re not keeping our hopes up high for him to be able to join the team,” he said. Rosario figured in a bad fall
in TNT’s game against Phoenix. His chin hit the floor first but was able to cushion it with his right wrist — which is his shooting hand. But
he was pulled out of that game via a stretcher. But if it’s any indication, the 25-yearold cager was participating in postpractice shootarounds.Philstar

Rachelle’s leisurely weekend in London
Every time I fly Philippine Airlines (“The Heart of the Filipino”), the first thing I do as soon as I fasten my seat belt is check the latest issue of Mabuhay, the airline’s monthly magazine. I don’t just browse through it but read it, according to The STAR’s blurb, “from cover to cover.” My favorite feature is how a celebrity spends her weekend. It is written in a leisurely style that fits how the subject enjoys (to the hilt!) her Saturdays and Sundays -— unhurried, uncluttered and unplanned. On a recent flight to the US, I was pleasantly surprised to find Rachelle Ann Go as the topic of the month. So you think that since she’s busy performing as the lead role in Hamilton (after her extended stint as Gigi in Miss Saigon, which won her accolades and awards, and as Eponine in Les Misérables which was staged in Manila two years ago), Rachelle hardly has time for herself, right? Wrong! In the story by Arwen Joyce, Rachelle gives us a tour around London which, Arwen quotes Rachelle, “may be one of the most bustling metropolises in the world, but it doesn’t feel as hectic and crowded as other
cities — there’s plenty of space to breathe.” That’s exactly what Rachelle shows us. On Saturdays, Rachelle wakes up at 9 a.m. and makes her breakfast from her weeklong stock of blackberry honey, apricot, almond loaf and buttery croissants, and a carton of free-range eggs purchased from the neighborhood market and bakery. Her schedule includes: meeting friends in Central London for brunch after which they check out the bargain shops (“for second-hand and pre-loved treasures”); dropping by Daunt Books, said to be one of the city’s most beloved independent bookstores, located on Marylebone High Street; killing time at the Wallace Collection, “one of Europe’s finest treasure troves of art and furniture;” meeting another friend at Clarette, “a chic wine bar in a mock Tudor-style townhouse;” and by 7 p.m. having dinner at The Hardcourt, “a modern Scandinavian restaurant in another Grade ll-listed Georgian townhouse.” Says Rachelle, “It’s the perfect, delicious end to a busy and fun-filled day.” Her Sundays usually start at 9 a.m. “in a comfy armchair at No. 11 Pimlico Road” located
near her home, “with a pot of loosed-leaf Earl Grey tea.” Like other Londoners, Rachelle takes the tube. She’s meeting a friend in Notting Hill which is immortalized in a romancedrama movie starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, apparently inspired by the Audrey Hepburn-Gregory Peck classic
film Roman Holiday, followed by brunch at 11 a.m. at Kyoto Garden in Holland Park. Then, they try to burn calories by strolling in the park before stopping at the Design Museum and, if time permits, at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Until I read it in Mabuhay magazine, I didn’t know that
there’s a Romulo Café in London (the Romulo Café in Quezon City is among the favorite venues for movie press conferences). Missing home, Rachelle minimizes her homesickness by gorging on comfort dishes like barbecued pork belly skewers, and beef and oxtail kare-kare. -Funfare by Ricky Lo
Titillating? Sure, but ‘Sin Island’
is not what you expect MANILA - The eight months it took to finally finish “Sin Island” were not all spent on pre-production or filming; there were breaks in between where the project’s fate even became uncertain, according to director Gino Santos. “I thought it was going to get shelved,” Santos told ABS-CBN News on the sidelines of a press conference ahead of the film’s Valentine’s Day release. The filmmaker explained: “It was a stop and go, also with our schedules and the story being developed. Some people would say it’s too risque, and some would say it’s the perfect opportunity.” Penned by Jancy Nicolas, “Sin Island” centers on David (Xian Lim) and Kanika (Coleen Garcia), a married couple whose separation leads the husband to a steamy island affair with Tasha (Nathalie Hart). Realizing she still wants to repair her marriage, Kanika puts up a fight with the headstrong Tasha. At least, that’s what the trailer lets on, teased Santos.
“At first, it was very tame, and then along the way I’d make it more edgy and more daring. My vision for the film was a little bit different from all the kabit films,” he said. As production progressed, so too did the story and look toward a different direction, which ultimately proved problematic. “That’s what stopped a bit the production. Buti na lang natuloy siya,” Santos said, without giving further details. It was veteran director Olivia Lamasan, newly appointed managing director of Star Cinema, who saw potential in the material and pushed for production to resume, according to Santos. “Actually, I’m so happy with the end product. Sometimes I would think to myself, gumagawa ba ako ng Star Cinema film? Kasi it’s so different,” Santos said, referring to the ABS-CBN film arm being known for its family dramas and romantic comedies. .-Miguel Dumaual, ABS-CBN News

sorts of things to fill it. The Gospel has record of the Samaritan woman. She was a woman who had been around and it showed, if not on her face, then in the deeper resources of her heart. It wasn’t the years; it was the mileage. When it came to picking men, she had plenty of experience and all of it was bad. One relationship after another had ended in disaster.
There are many groups that promote countries from around the world. In fact it was the Ukraine group that motivated me to re-establish the CanadaPhilippine Friendship Group. The Ukraine Friendship Group is a very active group of MPs and it has had a real impact on Government policy while educating MPs, Senators and many others about all things related to Ukraine. For me, the Bell helicopter story re-enforces why the late Senator Enverga and I decided last year to expand the activities of the Philippine Friendship group in 2018. Recognizing how the Ukraine Friendship group has influenced the thinking in Ottawa, the Canada-Philippine Friendship Group needs to do likewise. I would like to share two special projects that are currently being worked on. Every year since 2011 MPs and Senators have been celebrating Philippine Independence Day and we will be doing that again this year. This is one way where we can maximize the number of Parliamentarians to come out to a special event that will highlight the importance of Canada’s Filipino community and the Philippines itself. It is a wonderful event that will start off with both national anthems, a few speakers, some entertainment and snacks, with the possibility of a flag raising. The Independence Day celebration is not new but this year marks the first time where there will be an official trip to the Philippines. Earlier this month I met with Francisco Fernandez III (Philippine Embassy), who works with the Philippine Ambassador to Canada Petra Garcia, and he along with other embassy staff in Ottawa will assist to make sure the trip to the Philippines will be a productive one. The trip is scheduled for August 20-22 but I suspect some members including myself will want to stay for a week or so. The official trip will include meetings with members of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and local mayors. Discussions will also take place at the Canadian Embassy. We also plan to take some tours, including a visit to Rizal Park. On a side note, in addition to the official trip, I will host a couple of immigration information sessions. With Canada’s Filipino heritage community growing at the rate it is and given Canada’s dependency on the Philippines, I believe it is becoming absolutely critical that we need to better understand just how important the Canada-Philippine relationship is to both countries. If you have suggestions on what the visiting group of MPs should be looking at during our August trip, please let me know. Call my office and talk to Hazel or even stop by McDonald’s on a Saturday and let me hear your ideas.

Then one afternoon, she went down to the well to draw water and found a Galilean rabbi there. The last thing she wanted was to get into a religious discussion, but she was drawn in spite of herself when he began speaking to her about her need for living water- a lasting, spiritual, never-ending source of spiritual water that would refresh her tired soul. You know the story and you know that there came a point in the conversation where Jesus said to her, “Go get your husband and bring him here.” I can feel her pain at the mention of the topic. “Why did He have to go and mention that?” “I have no husband.” Why did Jesus go there? It was to show her need. It was to make her thirsty for that which only He could satisfy. He does the same thing to us today. There are things that the Lord brings into our life that are designed to increase our thirst. I’ve been in some hot situations where the temperature was so high that you walked out and could hardly wait for a taste of cool, refreshing water. Has the Lord been turning up the heat in your life lately? It might be that He is at work in your life to create a thirst for that which only He can satisfy. This invitation is extended to all who are thirsty. “Come, all of you who are thirsty…” Maybe you are reading this and you are at your rope’s end. You have nowhere else to turn. You are broke. You are in a dry well. Maybe despair and hopelessness are strangling you right now. Maybe you feel you are just crawling closer and closer through that shadow of the valley of death. If that’s you, I just want to remind you our God hears the cries of the broken. He’s not a distant God. He’s not an apathetic God. He is near. He has inclined his ear to the cries of your heart. He hears your pleas for mercy. Cry out to Him. If you are thirsty and you know you are thirsty, you know you have nowhere else to turn, nothing else to hold onto, cry out to God. “Come to the waters. Come buy without money and without cost”. God is your joy. God is your hope. DUTERTE TO ICC:
Why focus on me?

“I was the first head of state who was indicted. There are Rohingyas who are being slaughtered but they only chose to indict me,” Duterte said during a private meeting in Cebu City on Tuesday, a transcript of which was provided by Malacañang to media on late Wednesday night. More than 600,000 Rohingya have flooded into Bangladesh since late August, and now live in squalor in the world’s biggest refugee camp. The stream of desperate refugees who escape across the riverine border bring with them stories of rape, murder and the torching of villages by soldiers and Buddhist mobs. The Burmese governme nt insists military action in Rakhine is a proportionate response to violence by militants. Duterte even advised Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi during his trip to India last January to ignore criticisms from human rights organizations on her silence on the humanitarian situation in Rakhine. In his speech in Cebu, Duterte reiterated that
the United Nations was useless saying it has not prevented any war. The President also said he was ready to argue his case before the ICC. “Okay, you asked for it, let’s have a trial. I will cross-examine you. When the trouble reaches them, they won’t be able to stand the cross-examination,” Duterte said. The ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor said last week that it would begin its preliminary examination on the extrajudicial killings associated with the government’s intensified anti-illegal drugs campaign, whick kicked off on July 1, 2016. Malacañang clarified that a preliminary examination does not equate to a formal preliminary investigation, but is merely a procedure conducted by the ICC to determine whether the case falls under its jurisdiction. The Palace also said that the alleged deaths attributed to the administration’s campaign against illegal drugs were because of lawful police operations, thus these could not be regarded as attacks against civilians. —By VIRGIL LOPEZ, GMA News
China built 7 military outposts in South China Sea, says US admiral
MANILA, Philippines — Beijing continues to install military facilities and capabilities on seven outposts in the Spratly Islands despite insisting China does not intend to militarize the region, the commander of the US Pacific Command warned. Admiral Harry Harris Jr. said that only short-range defensive systems are deployed in China’s artificial islands in the South China Sea but their massive infrastructure can support advance military capabilities that can deploy to the bases on short notice. “The US should assume Beijing plans to use these facilities for their clearly intended purposes at some point in the future,” Harris told the US House Armed Services Committee. At the moment, there are no military aircraft, air defense missile launchers or anti-ship missile systems deployed to China’s outposts in the Spratly Islands, which are also being contested by Taiwan, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Harris noted that the Chinese have built runways, fighter aircraft hangars and protected air defense launcher sheds in its three largest outposts in the Spratly Islands — Fiery Cross Reef, Mischief Reef and Subi Reef. China’s “Big Three” islands also have protected anti-ship missile launcher sheds, water and fuel storage tanks farms, ammunition storage facilities, barracks, communications systems, deep water pier facilities and military radars. “These bases appear to be forward military outposts, built for the military, garrisoned by military forces, and designed to project Chinese military power and capability across the breadth of China’s disputed South China Sea claims,” Harris said. Harris said that China’s rhetoric of deploying military capabilities in response to increased US presence, through freedom of navigation operations, was “disingenuous.” Philstar

Will a health event affect your retirement plan? IF you plan to retire in your 60s, you’re in good company. According to the 2014 Sun LifeCanadian Unretirement Index: - 28 per cent of Canadians expect to retire at age 66. - Twice that many — 56 per cent — expect to work past the traditional retirement age, with 65 per cent citing ‘need’ (versus ‘want’) as the reason. - Although 66 is the average expected retirement age, for 55 to 65 year olds, the average is 67. But not everything always goes as planned. The 2014 Sun Life Canadian Health Index — an annual survey that explores people’s health-related views and experiences — confirmed that 69 per cent of retired Canadians didn’t stop working on the date they planned. Among those who didn’t retire as planned,41 per cent cited personal health as the primary reason for retiring earlier. Major health events — heart attacks, cancer, serious injuries — are an unfortunate (and frequently unpredictable)
part of life. And sois the financial fallout. This year’s health index found that 45 per cent of Canadians have endured a significant health event. Of that 45 per cent: - almost half had to retire for personal ormedical reasons (45 per cent); - 42 per cent experienced financial hardship; and - 25 per cent have reduced or depleted savings as a result. What’s more, even though 66 per cent of those surveyed cited ‘deteriorating health as they age’ as their top concern, only 22 percent have saved money or otherwise planned for extra health-care expenses in retirement. Add in the fact that Canadians are living longer and will need a long-lasting income, and the potential for financial difficulty in retirement becomes even greater. For some, it might even mean outliving their savings.
