PNP chief Ronald Dela Rosa, however, noted that 26 persons have been arrested for carrying firearms during the celebrations last weekend. According to Dela Rosa, 20 civilians were arrested for illegal possession of firearms while the other six were from the police and the military. Meanwhile, 74 persons were arrested for illegal possession of firecrackers while the police confiscated a total of P390,229 worth of illegal firecrackers. The PNP chief attributed the decrease in casualties this year to President Rodrigo Duterte’s issuance of Executive Order 28 which limits the use of firecrackers, as well as the support of local government units. zero, 2

MANILA, Philippines —The Department of Transportation on Tuesday said more than 500 electric jeepneys, eyed as replacement for old jeepneys, are set to operate this month. DOTr Undersecretary for Roads Thomas Orbos said the e-jeepneys would be on the road not just in Metro Manila but also nationwide. “What we’re looking at is that they come out this year, they come out this month. You will still have the old jeepneys [but] let the people decide,” Orbos said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source. Earlier, Orbos said the transportation department will remove jeepneys that are at least 15 years old from streets in the first week of January. The move is part of the government’s transport modernization program and the start of the threeyear transition period. DOTr said they cannot keep all old jeepneys off the roads immediately, hence the transition period. The old jeepneys will be replaced by solar and electric-powered jeepneys, which are also environment-friendly. Some of the replacement jeeps might also powered by engines that run on fossil fuel but will
be compliant with Euro 4 emissions standards. Orbos added that e-jeepneys would operate for the convenience and safety of the riding public. Among the features of convenience mentioned by Orbos are free wi-fi, CCTV cameras, automated fare collection, airconditioning for some units, speed limiters, and its solar or electric powered engine. “Basically it’s more comfortable, PWD-ready,” Orbosa added. The transport official said fares on the e-jeepneys have yet to be detemined but he added that based on the agency’s studies, the newer jeepneys will be able to carry more passengers, which would mean savings for drivers. Orbos said they are also eyeing on “more rationalized” routes for e-jeepney to avoid traffic congestion. Major transport groups staged several strikes last year to oppose the phase out of old jeepney units, saying the program benefits transportation firms and cooperatives and not operators and drivers who may not be able to afford to replace their jeepneys. DOH to shoulder treatment of firecracker victims The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday said it will shoulder the treatment of firecracker victims. DOH spokesperson and assistant secretary Lyndon Lee Suy said the agency will cover firecracker victims’ hospital expenses through the government’s medical assistance program. “Ang sabi, nagpaputok na nga, bakit iko-cover pa ba ng DOH ‘yung kanilang mga gastusin? Oo naman po dahil aksidente pa rin ito, kahit sabihin natin naging pasaway kung kaya’t nagkaro’n ng sugat. Meron tayong mga medical assistance program na pwedeng gamitin ng Department of Health sa pagtulong sa mga kababayan na naputukan,” Lee Suy said in an interview on Unang Balita. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III earlier said that even non-members of the Philippine Health Insurance
Corporation (PhilHealth) will also be assisted. “Para doon naman sa hindi miyembro ng PhilHealth ay sasagutin din ng DOH ang gastusin nila sa pamamaraan ng medical assistance program. So wala po silang dapat alalahanin. Wala dapat silang problema patungkol sa kanilang gastusin. Ang importante po gumaling sila sa lalong madaling panahon,” he said in a press briefing at East Avenue Medical Center in Quezon City. As of January 1, a total of 191 firecracker-related injuries and one stray bullet case were recorded by the DOH and Philippine National Police. This was 68 percent lower compared to the same period in the previous year and also 77 percent lower than the five-year, 2012 to 2016 average. There were no reported deaths and fireworks in-

Lee Suy, meanwhile, said that this year’s firecracker-related injuries were “relatively milder” compared to the previous year. “Relatively, mas mild ‘yung mga kaso ngayon although may mga naputulan pa rin po ng mga daliri pero hindi kasing lala ng nakaraang taon na kamay talaga or may nabulag or may, well, namatay pa po nu’ng mga nakaraang taon,” he said. Majority of the cases were hand injuries which were recorded at 115 while most victims were males with 160 cases. A total of 3,945 community fireworks display zones were set up nationwide in accordance with the president’s order. Dela Rosa also commended the public’s vigilance against indiscriminate firing and the PNP’s intensified campaign against the illegal manufacture and sale of firecrackers. “I would like to congratulate our police personnel for the effective operations and campaign on if which resulted to an all time low incidence and casualties,” Dela Rosa said. The Department of Health recorded an all-time low of 191 firecracker-related injuries, which is 68 percent lower compared to the previous year. The DOH had also credited Duterte’s EO 28, which was implemented for the first time last weekend, for the lower number of firecracker injuries this year. “We would like to thank first and foremost President Rodrigo Duterte for passing or signing Executive Order 28, which truly reinforced the efforts of the DOH and complimented by the efforts of other concerned agencies,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque said in a press briefing on Monday.-Philstar

Philippines among the happiest, most optimistic countries in the world — report MANILA, Philippines — Despite the issues that hounded and the tragedies that struck the nation in 2017, the Philippines is still one of the happiest and most optimistic countries in the world, the recent survey by a US-based polling firm showed. According to Gallup International’s 41st Annual Global End of the Year Survey, the Philippines is the third happiest country in the world with a net score of +84. Eighty-six percent of Filipinos answered they were happy, two percent answered they were unhappy, and 10 percent answered they were neither happy nor unhappy to the question: “In general, do you personally feel very happy, happy, neither happy nor unhappy, unhappy or very unhappy about your life?” Last 2016, the country shared the second place with China with a net score of +79. The Philippines earlier ranked 72nd out of
the 155 countries in the World Happiness Report for 2017, according to the data released by the Sustainable Development Solution Network for the United Nations last March. Fiji remained the happiest place in the world according to the Gallup poll (+92) out of the 55 countries surveyed followed by Colombia (+87). Iran, on the other hand, replaced Iraq as the unhappiest country in the world last year after posting a net score of +5. Gallup’s study showed that 59 percent of the surveyed claimed they were happy—10 points lower than last year. “2017 was a tough year with terrorist attacks over almost each week and it may have influenced personal lives all around the world. Nevertheless, a majority in all polled countries are happy,” the polling firm observed. -Philstar
Palace denies compromise deal reached with Marcoses Malacañang denied Monday that it has entered into a compromise agreement with the Marcoses for the return of a portion of their allegedly ill-gotten wealth, as proposed by a lawyer known to be loyal to the family. Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo confirmed Monday that lawyer Oliver Lozano, a Marcos loyalist, recently submitted to the Palace a draft proposal for the return of a part of the Marcoses’ ill-gotten wealth to the government. But no agreement has been reached on this, Panelo said. “The document was sent to the office by Atty. Oliver Lozano. Our office as a matter of courtesy and policy acknowledges receipt of any letter coming from any citizen. No action has been taken on Atty. Lozano’s proposal,” Panelo said in a text message. Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. also denied that a compromise deal has been reached already between the government and Marcoses. Civic leader Gang Badoy on Monday posted on her Facebook page a supposed copy of the compromise agreement between the government and the Marcoses.
A supposed response of Panelo to Lozano dated July 31, 2017 reads: “We shall further study your suggestions.” Panelo, however, stressed that the response was merely to acknowledge the receipt of Lozano’s proposal. “He wrote our office and attached that draft proposal. He has been submitting a lot of proposals and suggestions. Our office just acknowledges receipt of the same and thank him for his suggestions,” Panelo said. President Rodrigo Duterte, a friend of the Marcoses, had himself raised the possibility of striking a deal with the family for the return of a portion of their ill-gotten wealth.-ABS-CBN News
New Zealanders drink on tiny island to avoid local alcohol ban Jan. 1 (UPI) -- A group of drinkers in a small New Zealand town created their own island to get around a local ban on alcohol during the New Year holiday period. The local government of Tairua, located in northern New Zealand, bans consumption of alcohol in public places each year from Dec. 23 to Jan. 6. But this New Year, a group of about seven people created an island in the middle of the Tairua estuary so they can drink outside. According to the New Zealand Herald, the group used the low tide waters to shovel together enough mud to create a mound big enough for a bench and several people. As the waters surrounded the newly-formed island, the revelers imbibed in public, successfully flouting the local laws and doing so to the delight of local law enforcement. “That’s creative thinking,” Waikato eastern area commander Inspector John Kelly told Stuff. “If I had known that I probably would have joined them.” The local alcohol ban during the Christmas and New Year holiday was put in place to cut down on illegal behavior that resulted in several arrests. “[Th police] were getting frustrated with the result and said it has to change,” local resident Noddy Watts said. No arrests were made in the drinking island incident.
Printing error leads to ‘faceless’ banknotes in Philippines Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The central bank of the Philippines is recalling banknotes that were issued without the face of President Manuel Roxas due to a printing error. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said an investigation into reports of “faceless” banknotes determined an error in its printing machines was to blame for the lack of Roxas’ presence on the cash and the affected bills were distributed by ATMs owned by the Bank of the Philippine Islands. “The BSP encourages the individuals affected to turn over the misprinted notes,” the BSP said in a statement on its website. “Those individuals may, during office hours, either at its head office in Manila or its Security Plant Complex in Quezon City visit the BSP.” The misprinted money went viral after a woman named Earla Anne Yehey posted photos of the faceless banknotes she received on Christmas Day from a BPI ATM. Scattered social media posts from other ATM customers followed. BSP officials said only 33 of the 100 peso banknotes were printed without Roxas’ face. “The incident is isolated. There should be no cause for alarm,” CNN Philippines quoted Carlyn Pangilinan, the BSP’s managing director for currency management, as telling reporters Thursday. Yehey said she has received multiple offers to purchase her misprinted bills, but she plans to hang onto them as souvenirs after turning only one of the banknotes over to BSP to aid in their investigation.

Bato to local police chiefs: Arrest gun-bearing barangay tanods Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa on Tuesday ordered chiefs of police to arrest all village watchmen who are illegally possessing firearms. “Hulihin lahat ng tanod na armado. Magalit na ang magagalit, wala akong pakialam. They are not authorized to bring firearms. I’m giving instructions to all chiefs of police,” Dela Rosa said in a press conference. The PNP chief issued the order following the shooting incident in Mandaluyong City wherein village watchmen opened fire at a mistaken vehicle, which was rushing a shooting victim to the hospital. Responding Mandaluyong City policemen were informed by the watchmen that they were going after a shooter’s vehicle, prompting the lawmen to join the chase. The policemen also fired at the vehicle. Two persons, in-
cluding shooting victim Jonalyn Ambaon, were killed. Dela Rosa reiterated that village watchmen are only authorized to bring a nightstick or truncheon. “Ang puwede sa kanila ay batuta lang. The PNP is happy na may tanod na nakakatulong pero kung ang tanod ang source ng problema eh ibang usapan na,” he said. He said village watchmen who have permits to carry firearms outside of residence must not bring their guns in public places. “Hindi puwedeng dalhin iyon sa mataong lugar, sa place of convergence dahil pang self defense lang talaga,” he said. Even before he assumed his post, Dela Rosa had been against proposals to arm village watchmen with guns. He said watchmen owning firearms may be used as a private army of local officials. —ALG, GMA News

Nuclear war with North Korea is closer than ever, says former US military chief The United States is closer than ever before to war with North Korea, according to Mike Mullen, a retired admiral who served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Barack Obama. In an interview broadcast by ABC’s This Week programme he said he did not see any diplomatic resolution to the stand-off with Pyongyang as it goes about developing its nuclear missile capability and Donald Trump’s continues with his provocative rhetoric. “We’re actually closer, in my view, to a nuclear war with North Korea and in that region than we have ever been,” he said on Sunday. “I don’t see the opportunities to solve this diplomatically at this particular point.” Mr Trump has threatened to “totally destroy” North Korea if the US was forced to defend itself and repeatedly warned that all options are open
to him. Meanwhile, South Korean authorities revealed they had seized a Panama-flagged vessel suspected of delivering oil products to North Korea in violation of international sanctions. The seizure was the second to be announced by South Korea within a few days, as the United Nations steps up efforts to squeeze essential oil supplies to the reclusive North following its nuclear or ballistic missile tests. Mr Mullen, who also headed the Joint Chiefs under President George W Bush, said the crisis on the Korean peninsula was an example of the “dangerous climate” created by a president intent on upending Washington’s traditional approach to foreign policy. “I’m just more inclined to see over time that the rhetoric seems to be where the President is,” he said.-The Telegraph

PLDT Inc. and its mobile unit Smart Communications Inc. have entered into a $28.5million partnership deal with China’s information and communications technology firm Huawei. The deal call for Huawei is to help the PLDT Group transform its wireless service delivery platforms, the group said on Tuesday. The partnership with Huawei is part of the group’s massive capital expenditure program to overhaul its fixed and wireless networks infrastructure and its information technology systems, which is expected to exceed P50 billion in 2018, PLDT said in a regulatory filing signed by Ma. Lourdes Rausa-Chan, senior vice president and corporate secretary at PLDT. Huawei is a global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider. “This partnership will enable PLDT Group’s wireless services under the brands PLDT, Smart, Sun and TNT to become much more agile, efficient and resilient in developing and delivering a growing array of digital services,” PLDT chairman and CEO Manuel Pangilinan said. Under the 15-month agreement, Huawei will improve Smart’s online charging platforms and electronic loading for prepaid subscribers. It’s basically having more efficient network operations and maintenance, PLDT-Smart Public Affairs Group head Ramon Isberto told GMA News Online. “Currently we have three different platforms for Smart, TNT, and Sun. This will make it more efficient because everything will be managed under one
platform, making it simple,” he said. This involves consolidating similar applications for different brands under one system and streamlining business processes through a unified platform and simplified processes, PLDT Group chief corporate services officer Ray Espinosa said. Once the ICT solutions are in place, PLDT, Smart, Sun and TNT wireless services will also be able to offer bundled services more quickly and efficiently—significantly improving customer experience. “By leveraging deep understanding of PLDT and our worldwide experience, Huawei proposed our industry leading OCS (online charging system) and eLoad Solutions to accelerate PLDT’s evolution in the digital market through this transformation program,” Wilson Zang, president of Huawei Revenue Management product line, said. Huawei Revenue Management Software Solutions, including OCS and eLoad, enable more than 1.7 billion subscribers of over 190 communications service providers in 107 countries. — Ted Cordero/ VDS, GMA News

What
Alden is up to A Capricorn according to the western horoscope, Alden Richards is turning 26 on Tuesday, Jan. 2, Year of the Dog, which marks him as a Metal Sheep. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, Metal Sheep are kind and ambitious, having an iron fist in a velvet glove, and full of responsibility. When doing everything, they like to do it in a systematic way and have the ability to establish their own business or career. Advantages for them also include sticking to principles and acting in good faith. However, they sometimes are stubborn and inflexible. Therefore, they are fit to specialize in a specific technique and could obtain outstanding achievements. The description perfectly fits Alden who looks back at 2017, the Year of the Rooster, with approval. Asked how he would rate his career on a scale of 1 to 10, Alden broke into a wide smile, dimples digging deep into both his cheeks. “I give myself a Perfect 10,” he said. “I’m very happy with how things turned out last year.” Gigi Lara-Santiago, who handles the GMA Artist Center of which Alden is one of the 200 talents, volunteered the information that Alden would renew his contract with dozens of endorsements, among other prospects for 2018. It was Gigi who arranged this exclusive Conversation with Alden (yes, inside Alden’s car!) minutes before Alden entered Concha’s Garden Café (off Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City, right across from Il Terrazo, which he co-owns) to greet movie writers he had invited to a thanksgiving lunch Thursday (Dec. 28) last week, barely 24 hours he flew back from a much-deserved nine-day vacation in Japan with eight members of his family (including his dad, grandparents, siblings and other relatives). “Travel refreshes the mind and the body,” noted Gigi. And Alden agreed. “You come back fully recharged,” he said. The vacation (Dec. 19 to 27) gave Alden a chance to bond with family. “It’s my first time to spend time out of the country with my family,” related Alden. “Nakaka-relax. Ibang feeling na kasama mo ang pamilya mo. Sometimes when I go abroad for a show or for promo, I would stay a few days behind to unwind. Pero iba kapag pamilya ang kasama mo.” They stayed three days in Fukuoka and soaked up in the onsen in Furukawa town. Onsens are resorts developed around hot springs and there are so many of them in Furukawa than in any place in Japan. “So invigorating,” said Alden. “So energizing.” Then, they proceeded to Tokyo, explored the city (Akihabara, the electronics capital of Japan; shopped at the Sky Tree [Cheese Garden]; mixed with the
holiday tourists in Shinjuku; but, sadly, missed the famous Shibuya Crossing where hundreds crisscross at a junction), and went out of town to bask in the snow around Mt. Fuji, strolled around Nikko (old Japan) where they wandered at the shrines and temples. “At one of the shrines,” revealed Alden, “I wrote three wishes on a piece of wood — stability, peace and continuous blessings. I also wished for balance in showbiz, kasi ang daming imbalances sa showbiz, di ba?” Happily, Alden refrains from contributing to those “imbalances” by not being so active on social media, shrugging off bashers (unlike most showbiz denizens who are patola…as in pumapatol sa mga trolls) and not allowing negative forces to cramp his style. Besides Concha’s, Alden plans to invest more in business (“Off the record muna,” reminded Gigi) in 2018 which promises to be as busy as, if not far busier than 2017 when, aside from his regular shows (Eat, Bulaga! and Sunday Pinasaya), he did two docu-dramas (about Martial Law and Marawi) and the soap Destined To Be Yours with Maine Mendoza with whom he might do another movie (after their 2016 starrer Imagine You & Me) also to be produced by Tony Tuviera (“Tuloy ‘yon,” he told movie writers during a Christmas lunch). Not many people know that Alden has been supporting several charity projects which he keeps under wraps. “That’s why he makes it a point not to attend during those projects’ activities,” shared Gigi. “Secret projects,” said Alden. “If I go, siempre they will photograph me and the projects wouldn’t be secret anymore.” “It’s enough that he is helping those in need,” added Gigi. No regrets, or anything that he missed doing in 2017? “None,” assured Alden. “I did my best and I promise to do better. If you continuously
look for something that is not there, the unhappiness will always be there. I’m contented with what I have. Whatever I will have is more than a blessing.” And how would he rate his lovelife on a scale of 1 to 10? As usual, Alden is mum on the matter. The Metal Sheep are usually gooey over their love. They like to deal with the love relations sloppily. When meeting crisis for their love, they are difficult to make a decision. If they cherish their precious feelings, they try their best to maintain them. Otherwise, they end the relationship as early as possible. So what was the best lesson that he learned in 2017? “No matter how hard life deals with you, just keep going. As long as you’re doing good, nothing bad will happen to you.” Yes, it’s called Good Karma.-Ricky Lo

ack in December, I met with Philippine Ambassador Petronila Garcia and it felt a little strange this time because in the past, whenever I visited the Phil Embassy, I was usually with Senator Enverga. But with the Senator’s sudden passing last November, I no longer have a co-chair in the Canada Philippine Parliamentary Friendship Group.

For the New Year’s Eve revelry, more police officials are in denial about cases of celebratory gunfire in their jurisdictions, despite reports of about a dozen injuries from stray bullets. The Philippine National Police is already suffering from a deficit of public trust, and this can only be aggravated by denials that are inevitably seen as efforts by PNP officials to save their necks. Undoubtedly, several of the shooting incidents during the holidays were deliberate and not related to Christmas and New Year revelry. But the PNP must classify such incidents properly, instead of lumping them together with cases involving indiscriminate gunfire just to meet the objective of their higher-ups to reduce to zero the incidence of injuries from stray bullets. People generally understand that completely stopping indiscriminate gunfire during the holidays is complicated in this country teeming with loose firearms. Denying the incidence of stray bullet injuries from celebratory gunfire could lead to the arrest of fall guys with fake stories that will not stand in court. This means failure to apprehend the real culprits. And we all know what happens when people get away with breaking the law: it breeds impunity. If those who fired their guns to celebrate the holidays get away with it, they are likely to do it again next year.-Philstar

ative chocolate drink” was the Tagbilaran waiter’s rejoinder to my order of “sikwate” for breakfast. I could not fault him as the menu indicated the exact words he used. It was more of a personal preference that I chose “sik-wate,” prolonging each syllable, as if I were already holding a cup in hand, blowing at the steam rising from the opaque blackish brown surface, sipping the viscous lava, seeking the sweet in the bitter, and, after adding a little hot water to swirl the sludge silting the bottom of the cup, trying to sip the drink to the very last greedy drop. With genuine “sikwate,” you cannot. Cheat, get enough of, sate.
According to lore, thick and rich “tsokolate-eh” (“espresso”) is served to guests. However, for uninvited visitors, decorum still requires a serving of diluted “tsokolate-ah” (“aguado”), meaning less “tableya” and more water. The dregs that settle down like a clotted conscience prove not only that several “tableya” coins, unsweetened and unrepentantly bitter, were used to make the “sikwate,” but also that the “tableya” is pure and made entirely of cacao seeds picked by hand, dried, roasted, pounded, kneaded, and shaped into the dark coins that turn breakfast into memories and family lore. The waiter’s choice of an English phrase disappointed. His hotel’s choice of “tableya” supplier did not.
The cup he set down still bubbled, as if the “sikwate” had just been whipped to a foam inside a metal “batirol (pot)” with a wooden “boloneo (whisk).” The only difference between this cup and one I would be sipping at home is that I had to add milk and brown sugar to taste. Those cups of “sikwate” in Tagbilaran reminded me of other cups of native chocolate encountered, with varying degrees of disillusion, in places far from home. In Tagaytay and Baguio, powdered chocolate drink, sipped as the house

MATAMATA specialty, only made me more homesick and alienated. If the locals accept this as “native chocolate,” was I to also settle for this “tsokolate-ah”? According to lore, thick and rich “tsokolate-eh” (“espresso”) is served to guests. However, for uninvited visitors, decorum still requires a serving of diluted “tsokolate-ah” (“aguado”), meaning less “tableya” and more water. My friend, Lilia, a diabetic and a sweet tooth, prefers “tso-
kolate-ah” as healthier. “Tsokolate-eh” is more sinful and thus, like love, must be taken with moderation. In our family’s traditional yearend sojourn to the south of Cebu, we wended our way to a roadside store in the interiors of barangay Canbanua in the town of Argao. We smelled the “tableya” even before we saw a young man carry out white-rimmed-withblue metal “sarten” bowls with telltale smudges of brown. At the source, where Miguela “Guilang” Lanutan, 92, and her family still makes them, the “tableya” coins are wrapped in old newspaper. Stark and pure, love in no other form demands abandon and no reservations.Sun.Star Cebu
Year of the Lapdog mars lunar calendar

E’RE excited to see the pictures of our pet senators and congressmen on the new stamps that the post office has begun issuing to welcome the Year of the Dog in the Chinese lunar calendar that starts on February 16.
Federico D. Pascual Jr.
POSTSCRIPT
The canine loyalty to President Rodrigo Duterte of members of the supposedly independent Congress deserves special recognition on the new stamp series. We’re sure people will know which side of the stamp to spit on, if they are issued by the Philippine Postal Corp.
The counter-flow of government officials and propagandists inserting themselves into op-ed vantage positions in private media is another problem. We won’t be surprised if some of these officials masquerading as columnists use ghost-writers paid with public funds.
We dread to see also on the stamps pictures of another canine breed – those members of the press who profess splitloyalty to the government. They give a bad example to younger journalists who have been taught that they are watchdogs and not lapdogs of those in power.
In issuing special stamps featuring dogs, PhilPost noted that they are “the symbol of loyalty, honesty and possesses the best traits of humans.” Indeed, many dogs are more than symbols – many times they are more honest and loyal than their human counterparts.
If only for transparency, we think journalists who moonlight in the administration, or accept juicy positions in governmentcontrolled corporations, should sever their media connection altogether. Having one’s feet planted on two often shifting and conflicting grounds is quite tricky. Although it was said in another context, we are reminded of the advice of US Sen. Paul Laxalt to a tottering Ferdinand Marcos in a phone call at the height of the 1986 EDSA Revolt: Cut clean.

Also available are 6,000 copies of the limited-edition souvenir sheets being sold at P200 each. Whenever we pass the old Post Office building at the Liwasang Bonifacio (formerly Plaza Lawton), we wonder how the Internet and the plethora of electronic communication services, some of them free, is slowly killing it.

But neither of them has indicated any willingness to concede ground. Duterte insists, rather roughly, that there are no extrajudicial killings under his administration. But with some validated reports in her possession, Callamard says there are such abuses, as alleged, that should be investigated and acted upon by the world body. To resolve the issue, will either of them have to go? Since Duterte is a duly elected leader of a sovereign state – and with other UN members having their apparent share of EJKs and human rights violations – having Callamard replaced may be easier to do than having Duterte called to account before a UN body.
and other nations similarly situated on human rights issues. Manila’s more visible move is sending presidential spokesman Harry Roque to argue the Philippine side. But in a statement fired after Roque criticized her two fellow UN experts, Callamard vowed that they “will not be silenced by lies nor intimidated by anyone’s bully pulpit.” On Friday, Roque targeted UN special rapporteurs Victoria Tauli-Corpuz and Cecilia Jimenez-Damary, who happen to be Filipinos, accusing them of using their position to “embarrass” the Duterte administration before the international community. Callamard took up the cudgels for her colleagues, saying in so many words that when public officials “choose fiction over fact,” one can be sure they have a lot to hide. Duterte has been caught lying in public a number of times.
We have no information if the Philippines is moving for her replacement with the aid of sympathetic UN members
Roque’s blast came after Corpuz and Damary issued a statement that the ongoing militarization in Mindanao has “massive and potentially irreversible” impact on the human rights of some Lumads or indigenous folk.
The rapporteurs said: “Thousands of Lumads have already been forcibly displaced by the conflict and have seen their houses and livelihoods destroyed. We fear the situation could deteriorate further if the extension of martial law until the end of 2018 results in even greater militarization.” Roque said that Corpuz and Damary should “be more circumspect,” noting that their remarks “appeared to be very partisan.” The two rapporteurs, he added, were elected to their post during the Aquino administration, without him showing the relevance of that point. Callamard corrected Roque, saying that Corpuz and Damary were not elected but appointed by the UN Human Rights Council as independent experts on the basis of their “proven expertise and experience.” They have been performing their mandates “independently, impartially, accurately and courageously,” she added. She pointed out: “We are not United Nations staff. We are volunteers who serve in our personal capacity and receive no remuneration. We do not take on our roles at the behest of any government. “We take on our roles with a pledge to uphold independence, efficiency, competence and integrity and to act with probity, impartiality, honesty and in good faith.”Philstar Wala na ang dati niyang pagkatao, sa halip, ito’y napalitan na ng bago.” Kaya kung nais mong magbagaong buhay at magkaroon ng kasiguruhan ng buhay na walang hanggan, lumapit ka kay Jesus at manatili sa kaniyang pagkadiyos, paghahari at pagkanginoon. Joross Gamboa
says no bitterness between him and co-star Edgar Allan Guzman:
‘Bakit ako masasaktan?’ Joross Gamboa shares his thoughts on his ‘Deadma Walking’ co-star winning MMFF Best Supporting Actor. After the first week run of their Metro Manila Film Fest entry Deadma Walking, Joross Gamboa said he is happy with all the positive and encouraging reviews they have been getting for his first dramedy project. “Siyempre sobrang happy kami at maganda yung feedback na natatanggap namin sa mga tao. Hindi biro yung mga feedback sa amin ah kasi merong nagpropose dahil sa pelikula raw. Ganun pala katindi talaga ito, mapapa-propose ka sa iyong minamahal. Sa amin kasi na-appreciate namin lahat ng sinasabi sa amin, positive man or negative. Opinion yun ng tao so tatanggapin lahat yun. At siyempre proud ako kay EA (Edgar Allan Guzman) at siya yung nanalo,” he shared during the Deadma Walking final presscon held last December 29, 2017 in Quezon City. Even though he lost to All of Me star Derek Ramsay in the MMFF Best Actor category, Joross said he did not feel bad about him losing and EA winning.
Feeling ko kahit sa Best Actress mananalo si EA eh,” he said. The Deadma Walking star also dispelled any thoughts that he was bothered by the billing in the movie and said he is open to doing all kinds of roles, even when it is not a major one. “Siyempre support, bida, kahit cameo lang ako. Walang problema sa akin sa billing. Kumbaga dati nga hindi kami nagreklamo, sa Dilim si Natalie Hart nauna sa amin (sa billing). Sa akin wala namang problema yun. Basta hindi ako nagagalit. Hindi naman ako billing conscious, kami pa. Basta masaya kami dito sa Deadma Walking at dito masaya lahat, good vibes,” he said.-BY RHEA MANILA SANTOS

Rachelle Ann Go’s fiancé prepares a romantic proposal for her Rachelle Ann Go surprised her online followers earlier this month when she announced that she is engaged with her boyfriend Martin Spies. A video of their engagement was then released over the weekend, showing how Martin prepared for his proposal in Boracay. In the clip, he recalled meeting through a common friend. He also said that he already found the Filipina Broadway singer beautiful. “I never really kind of googled her or kind of looked for her online or anything like that. I just thought she was great in what she
does,” he said. He then expressed his gratitude to Rachelle’s parents who gave their blessings. Martin also asked her friends to give him an idea about the engagement ring and a place where he could propose in the island. “I feel like I’m floating. When he told me to dress up and curl my hair, I was like, why? He said that we were going somewhere sweet and special,” the singer said. TIP SHEET
These 3 habits are ruining your car’s automatic transmission Today’s automatic transmissions are so good, shift so effortlessly, and do their job so invisibly that you can’t blame someone for thinking they won’t break. However, these are still man-made machine parts and they do wear out and break down if we don’t take care of them. To prolonging their function, here are some bad habits to avoid with your automatic transmission. 1) Shifting into the opposite direction while the car is still moving (reverse into drive or vice versa). Sometimes we’re in such a hurry that we tend to shift
into drive or reverse while the car is still moving in the opposite direction. Although there are systems in place that will tolerate acts of this nature, it still contributes to premature wear of the transmission’s clutch packs and bands. The best practice is to come to a full stop before you select reverse or drive. 2) Revving the motor in neutral and then slamming the shifter into drive. This is called a “neutral drop.” Don’t do it! Sure, you might be able to do burnouts this way, but be prepared to have your transmission repaired. By doing this, you’re putting
a lot of stress on different parts of the transmission—pressure that the clutch packs and bands were not designed to withstand. Chances are you’ll break your transmission by doing this. The best thing to do is to not rev your engine before you engage Drive. 3) Shifting into park while the car is still moving. You can do this a few times and it won’t harm your transmission. You’ll probably only hear a few clicks and then your car will stop. There’s a part in your automatic gearbox called a parking pawl which is a pin that engages a notched ring
attached to the transmission’s output shaft. The pin is spring loaded, such that it will skip engagement if you’re still moving. However, if you do this enough you could damage that pin. The proper thing to do is to come to a complete halt before you put your transmission into Park. These days, most automatic transmissions are quite robust and can take a lot of punishment. You don’t really need to do much in terms of learning how to use them. Just avoid the three foregoing bad habits and your transmission will have a long and healthy life.-By Joey Bernardez

Maine Mendoza back on TV in time for Alden Richards’ birthday MANILA, Philippines — After a month of taking a break from show business, actress and TV host Maine Mendoza is back on noontime show “Eat Bulaga!” on January 1, in time for the birthday of her love team partner, Alden Richards, on January 2. Since returning from a month-long vacation with her siblings in Florida, USA, Maine has appeared on “Eat Bulaga’s Juan for All, All for Juan” segment. She was then jokingly asked by one of the show’s host, Sen. Tito Sotto, if she still knows how to speak Filipino after the trip. On Twitter, the hashtags “WelcomeBack MAINE” and “AldenRichardsAt26” became among the top-trending on January 1 and 2, signaling that fans of Alden and Maine’s AlDub love team have been eagerly waiting for the couple’s 2018 reunion. In a recent interview with the press, Alden confirmed that he and Maine are doing a new movie, dispelling rumors that he and Maine are not in good terms and that AlDub will be abolished. In his Twitter account, Alden told fans that he will entertain them in a theme park as his 26th anniversary treat. He, however, has not revealed how he and Maine would celebrate his birthday, though he has told the press in an interview last December that he will have a birthday special on “Eat Bulaga!” It can be recalled that Maine took a showbiz hiatus shortly after she posted an open letter to her fans on Twitter. In a previous interview with Pilipino Star Ngayon, AlDub’s “Eat Bulaga!” co-host Vic Sotto clarified that Maine was on vacation to spend Christmas and New Year in the United States and she was not suspended from the show because of the open letter. While some fans called Maine “selfish” for the letter, she has been praised by other celebri-
ties for the move. Stars like Ai Ai delas Alas, Christine BersolaBabao, Gabbi Garcia and even Vice Ganda of “It’s Showtime!” called Maine “brave” for posting the lengthy letter. Since the letter, among Maine’s New Year’s resolutions is to become even braver this 2018. In her latest Instagram post, she narrated how she enjoyed skydiving in Miami and among the things in her 2018 bucket list is to skydive alone. “Funny thing, I almost cried while sitting inside the aircraft– incredibly nervous and happy– because DAMN I cannot believe I am actually doing this!” she exclaimed. Will this New Year spark a new start for AlDub or will they finally part ways?-Philstar
Nico teases Solenn for ‘forgetting’ second anniversary Nico Bolzico teased his wife, Solenn Heussaff, for “forgetting” to greet him on their second anniversary, as he shared his sweet message for her on Instagram. “Two years ago we came out of this building after signing the most important contract of our lives!” he wrote to go with the throwback photo of them from when they had their civil wedding. Recalling the bliss he felt that day, he added: “Until today I can not believe you chose me as your partner in life and I promise to work everyday for you not to change your mind!” He did jokingly point out that he was alone in remembering the date, which he said is “some-
thing extremely relevant for any couple.” Tagging his wife, he said: “I know you forgot about it, but it is okay, I understand, just add one dot next to the ‘wifezilla owes Nico’ list, I will see what I can exchange it for!” Heussaff replied with her own heartwarming post, which also included her defense. “Mi amore! Two years ago today it rained on the scariest and most memorable day of our lives,” she said. “You are the best partner in life I could ever ask for! Hurry and come back home so we can celebrate. Also, I don’t need to add a dot on the ‘wifezilla owes Nico’ list because of the time difference. Lol! Te amo tanto!” ABS-CBN News

Online film unites Christians, Muslims to sing message of peace MANILA, Philippines — For billions around the world, Christmas is a time of love and good will. It is a time when families come together, reflecting on the year that’s passed, while preparing for the one yet to come. In the Philippines with 7,641 islands and a multitude of viewpoints and beliefs, the scenario is not as simple. For this year’s holiday season, the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen and Professionals, Kapatiran National Women’s Peace Table, and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas teamed with the nation’s premier advertising agency, TBWA\Santiago Mangada Puno, to deliver a unique message of hope. It comes in an online film featuring Maranao performers of different backgrounds and religious beliefs. Together they perform a rendition of
“Oh Holy Night” in their native tongue. As they sing, a number of the performers are shown narrowly escaping execution in the hands of extremist rebels thanks to the extraordinary actions of Datu Norodin Alonto Lucman. Through the heroic actions of Lucman and others like him, 64 Christian survivors were able to survive the traumatic events of May 2017 when militants attempted to lay siege to Marawi City. Many of those survivors have joined with their Muslim brothers and sisters to share their thanks and hopes for unity through a timeless song of peace. As our nation prepares for 2018, may Filipinos of all beliefs and walks of life be united in the dream of a day we need not live in fear, and when such messages will no longer be necessary.
Paolo Contis dedicates sweet message for LJ Reyes on her birthday Apart from Christmas, “Bubble Gang” star Paolo Contis has another reason to celebrate December 25: It’s his girlfriend Kapuso actress LJ Reyes’ birthday! In the occassion of LJ’s 30th birthday, Paolo Contis dedicated a sweet message for LJ on Instagram. Sharing a photo of LJ with the Washington Monument in the background, Paolo writes in the caption a heartfelt message for LJ, emphasizing that in a world full of uncertainties, she is the only thing he’s sure of.
The couple are having a vacation in the US for the holiday season together with LJ’s son Aki. — LA, GMA News

Movie review: ‘Siargao,’ a beautiful reminder about second chances Laura Molina was a vivacious YouTube vlogger traveling alone to Siargao. She just had a public breakup with her boyfriend Mikey on own his YouTube channel. Diego (aka Jigs) Punzalan was the charismatic vocalist of a popular rock band flying back to his hometown of Siargao. He just had a scandalous public falling out with his band mates in The Diego Project. After a rough start on the plane, Laura and Diego hit it off as friends as they talk about their
lives and loves while hopping into various resorts and parties around the island. Jericho Rosales felt right at home as island boy Jigs. He has got the charm down pat. He is cool and carefree, looking very good either surfing the waves or riding his motorbike on or singing while playing his guitar. When it comes to expressing the inner emotional struggle of his character, we know Rosales can deliver on these dramatic scenes and he certainly does not fail us
in this regard. Erich Gonzales is perky and lively as Laura. She had that bit of a nerdy vibe which was delightful, but she certainly donned those two-piece bikinis with fierce confidence. Her role may initially seem to be a lightweight one from whom the audience can virtually experience Siargao. However, when the pain behind her smiles came to fore, Gonzales also raised her acting bar to match her co-star. The most mysterious character in
the story is Abi, played by the equally enigmatic Jasmine Curtis-Smith. With her mestiza features, you would not immediately think of her as an island girl, but with her surfboard and sunkissed tan, Curtis-Smith never felt miscast at all. She never spoke too much, but her face and tears effectively reflected her deep yearning for something she understood may be impossible for her to obtain. The award she won for Best Supporting Actress is well-deserved.Fred Hawson

Ryoichi Taguchi
Milan Melindo
BOXING: Milan Melindo loses world title in bloody bout Milan Melindo lost his world lightflyweight belt to Ryoichi Taguchi of Japan in a title-unification bout in Tokyo, Japan Sunday night. Taguchi won on all scorecards, with two judges tallying 117-111 and a third scoring the bout 116-112. With the win, Taguchi kept his World Boxing Association title and took away Melindo’s International Boxing Federation crown in the process. While Melindo took the fight to Taguchi as any visiting fighter should, the constantly moving Taguchi took advantage of his length to connect on his jab and on several occasions proved to be
deceptively durable amid the visitor’s persistent attacks. The 5-foot-2 Melindo, shorter by 3 inches than his opponent, almost solely focused on Taguchi’s body, but the Japanese champion gamely absorbed the blows. In the ninth, Taguchi sustained a glaring cut on his head. It was caused by what the referee ruled as an accidental head butt. The action turned up a few notches from that point. After working the jab, Taguchi started throwing more meaningful combinations that slowed down Me-
lindo, the hits to the visitor’s face resounding. Melindo, although winded, didn’t buckle. In the 11th, Melindo winced as he took a head to his already swollen left-eye area. He battled back and engaged Taguchi some more, but with an impaired eyesight Melindo couldn’t do much to hurt Taguchi. At this point, Taguchi was in control. In the 12th, blood started to gush out of the cut Melindo sustained on his right eye. The round ended with the two exhausted fighters trading blows but still standing on their feet. The nature and outcome of the bout
were a drastic departure from Melindo’s last visit in Japan, but similar to his most recent bout. In May, it took only 1 round for Melindo to stop Akira Yaegashi in Tokyo, to capture the IBF title. In his first title defense in September, he went through the wringer, a bout against Hekkie Budler of South Africa that went the full 12 rounds. Melindo suffered bloody cuts on top of both his eyes before securing the split-decision win. Melindo’s loss to Taguchi was his 3rd professional career loss in 40 bouts.-ABSCBN News-
NBA: Houston’s Harden out at least 2 weeks with hamstring injury HOUSTON — Rockets star James Harden will miss at least two weeks with a left hamstring strain. The team announced Monday (Tuesday Manila time) that the NBA’s leading scorer has a grade 2 strain and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Harden was injured on a missed layup late in the fourth quarter of Houston’s 148-142 double-overtime win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night. He said after the game that he didn’t think the injury was se-
rious, but the guard was walking with a pronounced limp. The Rockets have the secondbest record in the Western Conference behind Golden State at 26-9, and Harden leads the NBA with his scoring average of 32.3 points per game. He also is averaging 9.1 assists, ranking third in the league. Harden, who has played every game this season, has been extremely durable during his career, missing just two games since the start of the 2014-15 season.-Reuters

Lea Salonga is new BTS fan MANILA, Philippines — Multiawarded international actress and singer Lea Salonga is the latest to join the fans of popular Korean boy group BTS. Salonga seems to be enamored with the group’s performance shown at “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2018!” as she asked her 5.23 million twitter followers to point her to the seven-piece group BTS or Bangtan Sonyeondan or Behind the Scene group. BTS’ RM (a.k.a. Rap Monster), Jin, Suga, Jungkook, V, J-Hope and Jimin performed two of their latest singles “Mic Drop” and “DNA” to a crowd of adoring, screaming fans. Singer Darren Espanto also replied to Salonga to introduce the K-pop group to her. “They killed it again,” Espanto quipped. The performance was recorded dur-
with Stockinger, shared that she never let him go as Stockinger has been a part of her life for a while now. “I actually realised this for a while now. Marlon is first and foremost my best friend before he is my boyfriend. He knows me so well already,” she said. Wurtzbach said that it was an emotional time for her when she had to pass on her Miss Universe crown to successor Iris Mittanaere last year, move back to the Philippines and return to showbiz. “He went through all of that. Of course, he had his challenges, I had mine. He was there and then he just never gave up on me. He never left,” she said. Wurtzbach stated that she never
considered breaking up with Stockinger, even after the paternity issue made the news. “I was strategic with our relationship. We would lay low and not post anything [on social media]. But it didn’t mean we were on a break. People thought we broke up, but we were just taking a break from all the eyes and ears,” she said.-The Hive Asia

confirmed until next month. The trip’s itinerary will be full of activities, specifically meetings with politicians and both Canadian and Philippine public servants. It will include tours of facilities and exploring ways to strengthen bridges between two great countries. As we get closer to the trip, I will share more details because I hope to stay a few days longer to focus on traditional activities that I do when I travel to the Philippines. One of the new topics I raised with Ambassador Garcia was the idea of a Parliamentary Internship program that would be modeled after the Ukrainian program in part and she seemed receptive to the idea. This program will have 10 to 15 students come from the Philippines and work in Ottawa for up to two months. I hope to share
more details on this idea in the coming months. Finally, last year some members of our group developed a special Canada-Philippine Friendship Group certificate program where MPs and Senators would be able to present them to individuals and/or groups. As you can tell, 2018 will be an important year for our Parliamentary group. If you have any questions, want more information or would like to share your thoughts, please let me know. Every Saturday I am at the local McDonalds on Keewatin Street from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Or send me an email at kevin@mpkevin.ca. May I take this opportunity to wish all the readers of Peryodiko and all my constituents a wonderful, fulfilling and peaceful year ahead!
Kris Aquino’s son on
homosexuality allegation:
Don’t judge!
Kris Aquino’s son, Bimby, wants you to know that nobody should judge or be judged for their identity. As reported on GMA, in a clip from one of Aquino’s online show “Christmas Home Tour”, the ten-year-old can be seen discussing with his mother about the fact that people think that he is gay. “Like people think [that] I’m a homosexual,” he said in the clip. “Yeah, don’t be homophobic, right?,” Aquino responded. “Yeah,” said Bimby, before Aquino continued, “That’s the whole message. Whatever your choice is in life, that’s your choice.” “Why would you judge a child?” asked Bimby to the camera.
Both the mother and son simultaneously said that one should never judge a child, and while Aquino stressed that people should never make the decision for the child, Bimby said that a child like him is still learning about themselves. “Puberty hasn’t struck for me yet,” he added, to which Aquino responded with a nod and smile.-The Hive Asia
Ellen Adarna, John Lloyd Cruz share sweet New Year, Christmas photos
MANILA, Philippines — In her latest Instagram posts, actress Ellen Adarna has been showing more and more photos of her and rumored boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz together, especially during the holidays. On Christmas Day, Ellen posted a photo of her and John Lloyd sitting on a stairwell. The photo shows her resting her head on her rumored fiance’s shoulder. The picture is simply captioned: “Merry Xmas!!!” In her latest post published days before New Year, Ellen showed a picture of her being kissed by John Lloyd in Zermatt, Switzerland. For his part, John Lloyd posted pictures of what seemed like Ellen looking at artworks in an art gallery. Videos of Ellen and John Lloyd also sprouted on social media. One video shows Ellen unwrapping what is said to be John Lloyd’s Christmas gift. ABS-CBN also reported
of another video, which has been deleted on Instagram, showing John Lloyd serenading his supposed lady love with Ronan Keating’s “When You Say Nothing At All.” ABS-CBN also said in the report that Ellen was allegedly spotted in the airport with a baby bump. John Lloyd is still on an indefinite leave after videos of him in a drunken state trended on social media. John Lloyd and Ellen are co-stars in ABSCBN’s sitcom, “Home Sweetie Home.” The actor’s good friend, Piolo Pascual, has taken John Lloyd’s place as Toni Gonzaga’s co-star in the show while John Lloyd is still on leave.
